The Steel Fabricators of New England (SFNE) held its fall dinner recently at the Plainridge Park Casino, Plainville, Mass. During the networking sessions, casino staff took groups of attendees on a quick tour and provided instruction on the operation of the new gambling machines. SFNE nominations, for a first two year term to its new board, included Scott Coulombe, Lori Chasse, and Rick Coughlin. To serve an additional two year term are James McBrady and John Roy. Nominated officers include President Rens Hayes, Vice President Bret Miller, Secretary Darin Gillies, and Treasurer Peter Fushini. Continuing service are Mike Feder and David Orlando. Department data released recently by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials cautioned, however, that sustaining such widespread

job gains will require support at all levels of government for construction training programs. “Construction job gains were more widespread than at any time since last February,” said Ken Simonson, chief economist for the association. “Several states that had recently experienced year-over-year job losses began adding workers, while net employment gains accelerated in numerous other states.” In the past 12 months, construction spending rose 14%, the fastest clip since 2006, Simonson noted. He said the spending data suggest contractors will continue to expand hiring if they can find qualified workers. But he cautioned that may be difficult in many states because the number of unemployed job seekers in October who last worked in construction was at the lowest October level since 2006.

PROCON Partners With Rand-Whitney

Dover, NH – PROCON of Manchester, Rand-Whitney of Portsmouth, neighbors, and local officials recently celebrated groundbreaking on a new 118,600sf RandWhitney container facility at Stonewall Industrial Park in Dover. Rand-Whitney is known for pioneering innovative and environmentally friendly corrugated packaging for nearly 80 years. of searching for a long-term facility have successfully concluded with the decision to construct a plant in Dover, where they began. Their new home base is conveniently located at Route 108 and the Spaulding Turnpike junction. The new building will be substantially larger than the current one on Corporate Drive in Portsmouth to allow for additional equipment and higher production volumes. The intended 35-foot-high structure is to be segmented into 118,600sf overall

with 112,500sf dedicated to the manufacturing/warehouse use and 6,100sf dedicated to offices. Rand-Whitney will also be neighbors to specialty food company, Stonewall Kitchen, which already has construction work under way on a 75,000sf facility with plans to conclude by summer 2016. The packaging firm’s move involves the relocation of its existing equipment to the completed facility as well as adding new equipment and machinery in the prospective space.

PROCON’s design team conducted an expert assessment of the company’s existing equipment to incorporate old and new equipment accurately into the drawings. The intended structure is standard industrial building over a steel frame clad in a 3-inch structured insulated panel (SIP). A 2-inch thermal break was installed between the interior and exterior slab to prevent the perimeter slab from exposure to excessive cold, which in turn will help minimize the operation’s energy consumption within the structure.

NEIT Breaks Ground on First Hall

Violette’s Crossing will allow residents to live independently in their own apartment while eliminating the chores often associated with home ownership. It will also give the residents an opportunity to become part of a supportive community. The Gardens Neighborhood for Memory Support will be updated and expanded to include 24 suites on the first floor as well as a private, residentaccessible, secure courtyard. By adding on the additional apartments in Violette’s Crossing and additional suites in the Gardens, Rockridge will be able to provide quality housing for seniors for years to come. East Greenwich, RI – New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) recently began construction of a new 416-bed residence hall on the East Greenwich campus. The facility will be the first residence hall built in the college’s 75-year history. The four-story residence hall is located to the south of the main building on the East Greenwich campus, forming the southern end of an academic and residential quad which will continue to develop over subsequent campus projects. The building will feature a façade of brick and metal paneling, with ample windows in student rooms and on the ground floor. NEIT President Richard Gouse stated, “Through a rigorous and competitive RFP, New England Tech selected the team of Cranshaw Construction and Elkus Manfredi Architects to plan and construct the college’s first residence hall.” Brailsford & Dunlavey, Inc (B&D),

is the program manager on the project. The $29.4 million residence hall will offer a mixture of unit types for its students, including traditional single- and double-occupancy rooms and semi-suites. The facility will feature student lounges, study rooms, and flexible spaces for multipurpose use. NEIT is working with National Grid to identify energy-saving measures that will optimize sustainable building operations. The first residence hall will open in the summer of 2017. Concurrent projects on campus include the construction of a new loop road, an additional parking lot, and an addition to the main building featuring an expanded student dining facility, fitness center, and innovative classroom spaces. These projects mark a point of transformation for NEIT, which will evolve from a commuter college to a fully active 24×7 campus.

Fitchburg , MA – WinnDevelopment, the development arm of WinnCompanies, recently celebrated the ceremonial groundbreaking for $24.2 million in construction to transform the 110-yearold Fitchburg Yarn Mill into 96 units of mixed-income housing. Located on 7.4 acres along the Nashua River, the three-story 190,000sf brick mill building will be transformed into 57 market-rate units and 39 affordable units, of which 29 will be reserved for

residents earning 60% or below of the area median income (AMI) and 10 units will be reserved for residents earning 30% or below. The Architectural Team, of Chelsea, serves as architect on the project, and Colantonio, Inc., of Holliston, is the general contractor. “The rebirth of Fitchburg Yarn will become an outstanding example of the public-private cooperation required to transform a once-proud historic property

like this into modern community asset,” said Larry Curtis, president and managing partner of WinnDevelopment. In conjunction with the groundbreaking ceremony, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker toured the mill property and announced that the city of Fitchburg will receive a $3 million MassWorks award to improve infrastructure in the area with a special focus on the reconstruction of Main and River streets. “We are always happy to work

in Gateway cities such as Fitchburg, and to work with the mayor and a highly experienced developer — WinnCompanies — to bring these historic mills back into service as mixedincome housing,” said Massachusetts undersecretary of housing and community development Chrystal Kornegay. Work will commence in December 2015 and is expected to be completed by May 2017. The effort is expected to create approximately 150 construction jobs.

Westbrook, ME – On November 12, key players in the Stroudwater Lodge development placed their shovels in the dirt to kick off construction of Stroudwater Lodge Residences. The project’s construction manager, PROCON of Manchester, N.H., teamed up with developer Northbridge Companies

Extensive under slab and floor box work was also included in the electrical contract, which ranged from deep and shallow areas throughout. Minneapolis-based Kraus-Anderson was the general contractor assigned to the project, working directly with architect Crabtree Rohrbaugh & Associates, of Mechanicsburg, Penn., and electrical engineer, Bala Consulting Engineers, of King of Prussia, Penn. “The construction of a retail establishment stimulates the economic growth of our region, as it keeps our trades employed, as well as creates additional jobs upon completion,” commented Wayne J. Griffin, president of Griffin Electric.

When it comes to sustainability, there is no mission more critical than the world’s most precious resource, water. Xylem, a company dedicated to developing drinking and wastewater systems to improve water quality and accessibility in more than 150 countries around the world, felt it imperative that its new corporate headquarters express its values through design. The result is a 70,000sf facility that has earned the USGBC’s LEED Gold certification. Located in Westchester County about 30 miles north of Manhattan, Amenta Emma architects worked with the client on many strategies to achieve this outcome. First and foremost was site. The team evaluated 17 different locations before

settling on a location in Rye Brook, allowing the company to adapt a 1986era building. The location, according to the project design architect Charles Cannizzaro, “had the right proximity to high density housing, public transportation and all the things that you need to achieve a higher level of LEED certification that you can’t necessarily design in or buy.” For the interior design, the design team searched high and low for locally sourced materials for the many unique details in the building, all of which portray the company mission and are sustainable. Almost 30% of building materials and products were extracted or manufactured within 500 miles

illustrates the hydrologic cycle with an unfolding display of graphic imagery and words that tell the company story along the wall panels. For example, the floor of the reception area has mirrored chips in it, so it shimmers like the surface of the water. The reception area features sheet

acrylic with tiny bubbles, suggesting water, while carpet designs and textures are abstract renderings of cascading waterfalls. Careful attention was paid to reducing water use and optimal energy performance, including a commitment to buy some power, 8 kwh/sf, from renewable energy sources. But Xylem wasn’t satisfied just with inspiring interiors. The company insisted on design solutions that would help sustain its employees, for example, sit-stand desks, and bike storage to encourage cycling. Company leadership also wanted the design to invite employees to leave their desks throughout the day to mingle with colleagues. There is an assortment of open spaces to encourage this interaction, including a popular pingpong zone, says Cannizzaro. Xylem, which is named for a tissue in plants that conducts water and nutrients upward from the root, has inspired a cultural shift that gets people up and moving, motivating them to solve some of the world’s most pressing resource issues. Boston – J.M. Electrical Company, Inc. recently completed an energy efficiency upgrade at Georgetowne Homes, a newly renovated affordable housing development located in Hyde Park. Davis Square Architects was the architect for the project. Suffolk Construction was the GC. J.M. Electrical replaced the electric heating system with central boiler plants, rewired and installed new thermostats, and completely revamped the community

center in order to reduce energy demand and consumption while guaranteeing reliable energy delivery for power and heat. Working under the management of mechanical contractor EM Duggan, J.M. Electrical electricians updated the building’s heating system for 928 of the housing units, installing central boiler plants and a variable refrigerant monitoring system for the building’s community center. “This important project will provide

Fairfield, CT – Shawmut Design and Construction recently announced the beginning of construction on Fairfield University’s Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Recreation Complex (RecPlex). Shawmut’s work on the three-story recreational facility is a long-awaited update for the university’s community, encompassing an additional 12,000sf space to make fitness more accessible for students and staff. Shawmut’s work on the 73,000sf space includes a two-story expansion with a new lounge and improved fitness and multipurpose spaces featuring a new upper-level mezzanine for cardio equipment. To unite all recreational services, the

team will create a main two-story entry hall connecting all three levels with an open staircase. Shawmut will also complete renovations on the field house by replacing the flooring, adding an elevated indoor track, creating additional multipurpose rooms, and updating the pool locker rooms. The team will also perform lighting and acoustical improvements throughout the building. Scheduled for completion in August 2016, the extensive renovation to the building will greatly expand fitness and athletic training space for the university’s community.

Kaplan Renovates Northeastern Lab Boston – Kaplan Construction, a WBE general contractor and construction management firm, has been selected by Northeastern University to renovate a laboratory for the College of Engineering. In its first project on Northeastern’s Boston campus, Kaplan will renovate an existing interior laboratory at the Egan Engineering/Science Research Center and install new mechanicals, lighting, fire alarm, finishes, and millwork to create a new experimental laboratory. The research facility includes a grouping of labs that currently serve

multiple professors and students. The new lab will contain a 1,300-gallon acrylic water tank for experiments and an adjacent space with workstations where graduate students can plan and review experiments. In order to minimize disruptions, the lab space has soundproofing features in the walls, ceiling, and doors. During construction, the neighboring labs will be operational so Kaplan and its subcontractors will coordinate work closely with Northeastern faculty and staff to reduce interruptions to ongoing experiments.

Boston – Margulies Perruzzi Architects (MPA) has been selected to revitalize and reposition two office building properties for The Davis Companies, an integrated real estate investment, development, and management firm. MPA was engaged to upgrade the main entrance, lobby, and common areas for One Cabot Road in Medford and One Burlington Business Center in Burlington. One Cabot Road is a five-story, +/400,000sf office building located adjacent to the Wellington Circle MBTA Station in Medford. MPA is designing a dramatic revitalization of the property. Constructed in 1989, One Cabot features a full-service cafeteria, fitness facility, abundant power and emergency systems, and a generous parking ratio including 170 executive spaces inside the building. MPA’s design includes renovations to the entrance, lobby, and common spaces. To enhance the modern and urban feel of the building, the redesigned exterior main entrance will include a new glass curtainwall, canopy, and paving. Inside, MPA is transforming the lobby with bold backlit glass draped behind a wood-andmetal-trim reception desk, creating a high-end hospitality reception desk for the building’s 24×7 manned concierge/

security services. Additional lounge and café-style seating within the lobby will create exciting spaces for working and socializing while enjoying an espresso or watching TV on the large flat screen monitor. MPA was selected to update and transform the four-story, One Burlington Center, a 176,000sf office building’s exterior, east and west lobbies and common areas, as well as improve the building’s signage and identity from nearby Route 128. Needham, MA – Acentech of Cambridge has completed architectural acoustics consulting for a global headquarters project designed by Baker Design Group. The new 282,000sf global headquarters of TripAdvisor in Needham, incorporating LEED best practices and featuring excellent acoustics throughout its spaces. Acentech collaborated with Baker to provide acoustical design for the office fitout, with a primary focus on the atrium, open and closed offices, and various conference and meeting rooms. In the heart of the building, the four-story atrium is designed for casual gatherings, dining, and amplified and recorded presentations. Seating accom-

modates 1,100, so the proposed mixed use of the space required extensive acoustical analysis and computer modeling. Acentech and the design team established suitable goals for sound isolation, background noise, and room acoustics. Acoustical computer models and 3DListening auralizations were created to allow the client and the design team to experience the acoustics in the atrium under different design conditions, with different finishes for reverberation control, window treatments for highway sound isolation, and background noise levels, before the space was built. 3DListening is a process used by Acentech to produce and present sound simulations, also known as auralizations.

This is How Much it Costs to Recruit New Talent!

Here’s an important statistic to know if you are charged with hiring talent for your construction firm. In this booming market, a happily employed construction candidate, not actively seeking a new job, being directly recruited to join a new firm, typically expects a 10% to 15% bump in base salary to move. It’s frustrating how difficult it is to reach anybody these days, either candidates or clients. Construction is booming, people are stressed, super busy, and constantly inundated with communications. Our jobs as recruiters are becoming tougher by the day. There are fewer viable candidates available to be recruited and an ever-increasing pool of clients seeking new hires for their teams. The national unemployment rate in construction is

6.2%, which means fewer people are proactively looking for work and salaries are skyrocketing. Candidates are being swamped by LinkedIn, text, Twitter, email, voicemail, Snapchat, Instagram, Skype, and Facetime just to name just a few. The pendulum has swung back to a seller’s market, with candidates exhibiting a cockiness not seen since before the recession. On a daily basis, we hear of compensation demands that

Thankfully, we have relationships with great candidates who are also bird dogs for Construction Recruiters and frequently provide us with a portal to their network. To reinvent our pool of potential candidates in this marketplace would be extremely difficult. Candidates are striking back after years of no raises and doing the work

of three people — these are the people who kept their jobs during the recession and were reminded they were the “lucky ones.” They did more for less and now they want payback. This is where we see the inflated salary requests come into play. If a candidate’s No. 1 reason for joining your company is money, it won’t be long before they leave you for even more money. No matter how desperate you are to make that

hire, don’t bend to crazy money demands. What we do know from talking to thousands of candidates is that the best ones change jobs for life-enhancing opportunities. If you don’t have the time or resources to build a competitive employment package, just look to other industries to see what perks they provide to attract top talent. Keep in mind that Millennials feed on perks that provide appreciation, meaning, and lifestyle enhancements. The goal of perks is to encourage a certain type of behavior, to show appreciation, and to make your employees’ lives easier. Making it Work: Avoiding Failures in Design

What is failure? We know that fan belts break, motors burn out, and power disruptions are an operational reality. But not all failures are equal. The first step in making it work is to define what failure looks like for your project. Failure is an unacceptable or unsustainable deviation from an operating condition. For example, losing a critical pressure relationship in a lab; having a breach of containment due to occupant error; or losing millions of dollars in research due to inadequate temperature control. In each of these scenarios, there are building system components and occupant actions that might lend themselves to the failures described. This is important. Once potential types of failures have been

defined, the next step is identifying all the known factors that might cause this failure. These are common-cause failures, and they’re the ones we expect. Typically these are easy to define: The component or standard operating procedures (SOP) breaks down, so it’s a failure. Since we’ve defined the component’s or SOP’s function as critical, we provide some form of redundancy to address this identified risk.

hard to predict. Think about it this way: As building systems become more complex, potential for failure increases. Additionally, due to system complexity, predicting the deviations gets harder. Mapping all potential failures can be a daunting task. To avoid analysis paralysis, we need to temper these scenarios by assessing the risks and what’s realistic. Risk, in this context, is the consequence

We also need to define special-cause failures: These are the ones we don’t expect. Some people call these “hurricane scenarios.” But that’s not always the case. Building systems are increasingly complex, and even though these systems might have standard components, they can still experience failures that are

of an event multiplied by the probability of that event. Up until now, all we’ve talked about is the consequence, not the likelihood. Going back to our common-cause failures (think: pumps, fans, actuators, human error, etc.), we can typically get away with a qualitative approach for assessing risk.

This looks something like this: By identifying the qualitative probability, we can determine the risk. Let’s say losing a pressure relationship between two spaces would be catastrophic, and we know that our exhaust fan is a critical component for avoiding that failure. Since fan failures are somewhere between remote and likely (depending on the type of fan, its drive configuration, etc.), it’s safe to say we have a nominal risk and we should apply some additional measures to mitigate this risk. In this case it could mean adding a redundant exhaust fan powered from a different electrical source. The qualitative approach can work well for these common-cause failures. Special-cause failures need a more nuanced approach. This involves a quantitative approach where the probability is a numerical value. Imagine that you’re considering a project located in an area prone to hurricanes. The consequences, in this case, might include damage to the facility, sustained loss of power, flooding, and even complete loss of research. All continued to page 41

Healthcare Momentum Continues for Maugel’s Expanding Healthcare Practice

Harvard, MA – It’s been a stellar year for Maugel Architects’ healthcare practice. The firm attributes its growth to the move from centralized services, based at large academic medical centers, to a distributed model where healthcare is being delivered at the neighborhood level. “Hospitals are expanding into the primary-care market by setting up urgent care facilities and/or primary care facilities that are feeders to hospital services,” said Jonathan Cocker, the head of Maugel’s health care practice. “With the Affordable Care Act, hospitals are starting to own, or are being closely affiliated with, primary-care practices and

Specialties. Maugel also designed the interior fit-up for Circle Home Inc., a home healthcare and hospice provider and an affiliate of Circle Health, for the agency’s new 17,774sf space in Lowell. At Acton Medical Associates, located in Acton, the use of electronic medical records eliminated the need for onsite paper file storage —freeing up valuable square footage for expanded services. Maugel renovated the practice’s patient services facilities, which included a redesign and upgrade to the existing processing laboratory, phlebotomy and ultrasound facilities, and a new reception and waiting room area. The migration of diagnostic and life sciences labs to the suburbs along Route 495 is also contributing to Maugel’s growth. With the relocation of GE Healthcare, Quest Diagnostics, Genzyme, and Bristol- Myers Squibb to the area, momentum is gaining. Earlier this summer, Maugel renovated 30,000sf of office and lab space for New England Cryogenic Center (NECC), one of the world’s largest full-service cryogenics labs. NECC had recently relocated from Newton to Southborough. Regional hospitals are also playing a

role in Maugel’s healthcare expansion. At Marlborough Hospital, renovations are under way to transform their ICU Nurse Station and adjacent family waiting area. Maynard, MA – Maynard-based construction manager, design-builder, and general contractor JM Coull has completed renovations at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. The scope of work called for the renovation of the Patient Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) consisting of nine open PACU bays, one isolation PACU, support areas, and construction of a new storage room. The renovation comprises new flooring, wall and ceiling finishes, a nurses’ station, casework, and new headwall/bumper units.

Construction on this fast-tracked project began in July. Work was performed adjacent to the operating room, with the newborn special care nursery above and cardiac catheterization lab below. This marks the second project for the firm at the hospital and fifth overall project for Hallmark Health System. JMC’s previous work at Melrose-Wakefield included renovations to the hospital’s cafeteria, which transformed the existing 1,900sf of space into a new serving and seating area.

CTA to Build Public Safety Complex CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE GROUP

Proposed new Scituate public safety facility

Scituate – CTA Construction Co. Inc. has been selected as the general contractor on the new Scituate Public Safety Complex. The $15.2 million project will provide a new headquarters for the Scituate police and fire departments. The project architect is Dore & Whittier Architects, Inc. The 19,770sf complex will include a joint dispatch center and an emergency operations center to coordinate response for large-scale events and natural disasters. The facility will include three bays for fire apparatus and a sally port for the police to safely transfer prisoners between police vehicles and the building. The building will be divided into

separate police and fire areas, with administrative offices, public records storage, prisoner processing and detention, lockers and a fitness room, and a training and community meeting room. In addition to constructing the facility, the project will include clearing the site, a six-acre parcel on the northeast corner of Mann Lott Road and Chief Justice Cushing Highway (Route 3A), as well as installing new site paving and plantings. The project is expected to improve response times in the northern and western parts of Scituate, and bring police, fire, and emergency managed facilities into compliance with standards.

Gloucester to Seek Proposals Gloucester, MA – The city of Gloucester is moving forward with plans to create new jobs and tax revenues through the redevelopment of the 10.6-acre former Fuller School site. The city issued a request for proposals (RFP) from potential bidders just two weeks after the Gloucester City Council approved the sale of the Fuller School property. That RFP opens the door for Gloucester to reap revenues from the sale of the unused site and to weigh different

options from developers for projects that could bring employment opportunities, new tax dollars, and community uses to the site. Potential developers will have 60 days to respond to the RFP. Bids will be made public so that the community and elected officials will have the opportunity to weigh in prior to any decision. The city has the right to reject bids if they do not meet requirements. The Fuller School stopped serving as a Gloucester school in 2008.

South Shore Millwork Wins Boston – MassEcon, the state’s private sector partner in promoting business growth in Massachusetts, announced its Twelfth Annual Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Award winners. South Shore Millwork of Norton received the Bronze award in the Southeast sector for investing $7 million

in a 47,000sf expansion in Norton while adding 17 jobs which included craftsmen, engineers, project managers, installers, and office staff. Seventeen companies were selected on the basis of job growth, facility expansion, investment, and community involvement since Jan. 1, 2014.

Formerly a warehouse, it is being converted into a retail and apartment residences mixed-use facility. The project represents the first phase in the $500-million East Market redevelopment, and owners wanted to set the proper aesthetic tone within their budget. The building’s current façade is being removed to expose the concrete structure, which will be reclad with architectural insulated precast concrete panels with a lightly sandblasted, deep “charcoal” exterior finish. The 11-inch-thick panels include an interior 4-inch layer of ISO-Glass insulation manufactured by Thermosmass® and feature 3-inch finned projections integral to formed casting. Designers at BLT Architects used the panels to take advantage of the building’s 14-foot-high ceilings in the repurposing. The design concept features large windows framed by precast concrete to create a contemporary look with a dramatic visual effect. The precast concrete components are being fabricated by Coreslab Structures (Conn) Inc.

As we consider solutions, it’s important to note that there are engineered solutions (building controls, widgets, interlocks, etc.) and there are SOP solutions. Engineered solutions are seen as repeatable, and thus reliable, but can come at signifi-

cant costs and complexity. SOP solutions carry the risk of noncompliance, but leave room for adaptive decision-making, which has its benefits. The type of solution and its specifics need to be carefully weighed against the risks that you’re trying to mitigate. Typically a combined strategy provides the necessary protection, along with a degree of flexibility that can be advantageous. It all starts with a design that suits the risk assessment. Shawmut, Make-A-Wish Grant Wish

Shrewsbury, MA – Shawmut Design and Construction partnered with Make-AWish Massachusetts and Rhode Island recently to grant 5-year-old Shrewsbury resident Maxwel Mitchell’s wish for a Swiss Family Robinson-themed treehouse. The Shawmut team designed and built the treehouse, which included a wraparound deck, porthole window, and lookout tower. The 20-person volunteer team constructed the treehouse in Shawmut’s workshop, reconstructed it in Maxwell’s backyard, and unveiled the final product in front of friends and family.

Restoration & Renovation Finegold Alexander Design Castle

Boston – Finegold Alexander Architects has been chosen to plan and design the renovation and refurbishment of the Boston University “Castle” at 225 Bay State Road. The 14,700sf historic building, when complete, will serve as a vibrant new Alumni Center for BU’s 300,000-plus graduates. The project is still in its planning phases but will likely include a small expansion to the lower level at the rear of the Castle to create a more accessible BU Pub. Renovations will include a full-service commercial kitchen for events and functions, connections to the Center of

Admissions on the upper floors to solve accessibility issues, updated building systems, and other improvements. The project hopes to begin construction in late 2016 to allow for funding and approvals to come into place. The Castle — this year celebrating its 100th birthday — was completed in 1915 as a home for the family of industrialist William Lindsey. The property was donated to Boston University in 1939 and was used as the residence of BU’s presidents. Since 1967 it has been used mainly for official functions, weddings, and a myriad of university events. Currently the BU Pub, a private club for the BU Community, occupies the rear lower level.

Milton, MA – South Coast Improvement Company (SCI) of Marion completed renovation projects at Milton Academy. The projects took place at the Athletic and Convocation Center (ACC) and at the Robert Saltonstall Gymnasium (RGG). The renovation at the ACC building entailed the conversion of a storage area into two changing areas for home and visiting hockey teams. Each changing room included all new electrical, plumbing fixtures, lockers and benches, and specialized flooring to absorb the impact of hockey skates. The RGG renovation featured the conversion of three classrooms into two

smaller classrooms and one fitness/yoga studio. The project included all new light fixtures, carpet finish flooring, new HVAC, and other amenities. South Coast Improvement Company began the two projects over the summer and completed work in October. The two renovation projects cost a total of approximately $500,000. “Process is the key to projects like these where you have to coordinate with the dayto-day activities of staff and residents,” said Tom Quinlan, president of South Coast Improvement. “A successful project is not only one that looks great but caused minimal interruption to operations.”

At its core, Omni Block is a patented insulated masonry wall system that has been designed to take advantage of thermal mass and thermal lag principles in order to create a high energy efficient block wall system. This results in an Omni Block wall system with an R-Value of over 29 for a 12” block (U Factor of .034) and an R-Value of over 19 (U Factor of .051) for an 8” block. Omni Block has four main components; block, foam, rebar and grout. The blocks are installed the same way as standard CMU’s.
