Pare receives ACEC Bronze Pare Corporation, a leading multidisciplinary engineering and planning firm, the University Hall on the Boston Campus of the University of Massachusetts, was

awarded a Bronze Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA). Pare Corporation completed the design and construction phase services related to site/civil, traffic, and environmental permitting for the new $130 million, 190,000sf University Hall.

AAS Expands with MassDev Bond

Worcester, MA – MassDevelopment has issued a $17.7 million tax-exempt bond on behalf of the American Antiquarian Society (AAS), a scholarly society and independent research library in Worcester.

The AAS is using bond proceeds to expand and upgrade its facilities by buying a property at 4 Regent Street in Worcester for office, meeting, and storage space; demolishing existing structures

and making improvements at 90 Park Avenue for parking; and reconfiguring its existing facility at 185 Salisbury Street by relocating its conservation laboratory, HVAC systems, and other service equipment while creating new seminar, meeting, and exhibition areas.

Bond proceeds also will be used by the AAS to refinance past debt. United Bank purchased the bond.

Salem, MA – Groom Construction’s newest project, a state-of-the-art office and retail space at 331 Lafayette Street, is well underway and is expected to be ready for occupancy late October 2017.

Ground was broken on the 24,000sf mixed-use building in December 2016.

The project was redesigned due to community requests following the initial meeting in August with Robert Burr, developer, and Peter Pitman, architect.

The updates to the development include a redesign to maintain the historical setting with brick and clapboard siding.

Plans are to alleviate traffic congestion by improving access on West Avenue with a right-hand turn lane.

Boston – Shawmut Design and Construction recently announced the topping off of Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s (WPI) new Foisie Innovation Studio and Messenger Residence Hall.

The 78,000sf, $49 million ground-up project is expected to open in fall 2018 and includes high-tech classrooms, a robotics and global impacts laboratory, a café, and a three-floor, 140-student residence hall.

Shawmut’s work on the five-story, mixed-use facility will create a hub for WPI’s project-based curriculum, giving students the ability to design and create prototypes using rapid prototyping

equipment. The team will create a variety of academic spaces ranging from makerspaces and high-tech classrooms to an innovation and entrepreneurship center.

Informal collaboration areas with display technology, mobile tables, and seating will be installed throughout the facility to encourage interaction among students.

Shawmut utilized its Virtual Studio to provide Oculus Rift and Microsoft HoloLens to display high-definition renderings. The Virtual Studio team hosted a VR demo and tour to WPI students and faculty to “walk” through the project in real time.

AFE Offers CPMM Review Class Boston – AFE Region 8 will hold a faceto-face certified professional maintenance manager (CPMM) review class in our area, offered in conjunction with the AFE Region 8 Trade Show and Workshops.

Connecticut Mohegan Sun Expo Center to Open Summer 2018 Uncasville, CT – Leaders of the Mohegan Tribe and Mohegan Sun gathered recently at the flagship property in Connecticut to announce the official plans for The Mohegan Sun Expo Center. Construction is underway, with a target opening date of summer 2018. The expansion will span over 240,000gsf and will be located by the Winter Parking garage and in close proximity to Mohegan Sun’s newest hotel, Earth Tower. The New York-based architect firm Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) and the construction team out of North Stonington, A/Z Corp, are partners on this project.

Key features of the new Expo Center will include a 21,412nsf ballroom, divisible into two sections and featuring over 3,000nsf of prefunction space.

The Exposition Center itself will be 131,000nsf; it will have free parking, six loading docks from an open parking field, and additional drive-in access from two grade-level drive-in doors.

It will have 18 meeting rooms in total, ranging from 360nsf to 675nsf, a 1,263nsf boardroom with 230nsf of prefunction space and its own outdoor terrace, 3,600nsf of outdoor space, which includes

cultural history, with custom carpeting and light fixtures that reflect Native American motifs, the nearby Thames River, and the color palettes of the Earth and Sky towers.

Additional below-grade entertainment tenant space will be composed of 20,000sf of the total expanse, further diversifying the center’s mixed-use program.

Once completed in the summer of 2018, ideally in time for next year’s Barret-Jackson Car Collector’s Auction, Mohegan Sun will be home to the largest meetings and convention spaces between Boston and New York City.

a large wraparound terrace for the full center, and a 5,361nsf kitchen. Additional features include a mobile box office, upto-the-minute technology, digital displays inside and outside the center, free Wi-Fi, and contiguous exhibit space.

On the design front, the new Expo Center will be a column-free structure with clerestory windows, offering flexible programming within a naturally lit space.

The main circulation spine that connects the exposition hall to the prefunction area

also provides access to the overall facility, including the ballroom and adjustable meeting rooms. Along this path, floor-toceiling windows and doors lead visitors onto an outdoor patio that adds gathering space in warm weather and buffers the building from Cove Road that loops around the entire site.

Greenery extends east to the recently completed Earth Tower, which shares the same grand entry as the Sky Tower.

Mixed Reality:

Leveraging Technology Accelerators in Design and Construction

by Shelly Peckham Emerging technologies like mixed reality (MR) are among the new tools available to support resolution of issues in a collaborative, real-time environment before they translate into lost time and money on an active construction site.

MR combines real and virtual worlds through the use of wearable devices to merge simulated images into real-world environments.

MR tools bridge the gap between the drawn images in architecture to the final product created by construction. When there is a highly technical and complex construction detail requiring the input of multiple team members, such as the engineer, architect, construction manager, and trade contractor, these technologies offer benefits never before experienced.

As an early adopter of mixed reality technologies, one of the first projects

where Gilbane tested MR technology is at the city of Boston’s Dearborn STEM Academy in Roxbury, Mass. The project team has not only demonstrated and recognized the advantages of the realistic features of the technology, it is also being offered as a live teaching tool for use with students in real-time education not typically offered in the classroom.

headset places high-definition holographic images in the user’s actual environment, enabling interaction with the hologram in a fully immersive experience. HoloLens is a head-mounted holographic computer with a transparent lens that allows the user to input 3D BIM images and become immersed in the 3D image, while still seeing the actual physical environment in the background. The result is a truly immersive experience for clients, allowing them to interact with their building before

The HoloLens, which can be utilized without a hard connection to a computer, is more conducive to onsite utilization, as the device enables the user to still be present in their actual physical environment. HoloLens works with building visualization software from companies like Autodesk and Trimble.

Gilbane was selected by Microsoft HoloLens to be one of the first to receive the development edition of this gamechanging technology and received the headset in May 2016.

Gilbane’s project teams have successfully utilized the Microsoft HoloLens in a variety of applications,

from enlarging a 3D hologram mock-up of steel structures, to viewing the BIM model of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, security, and technology systems above the ceilings during construction. On the Dearborn STEM Academy in Roxbury, through the use of the HoloLens, an issue with the structural frame was identified that would not have been represented on the two-dimensional plans. Due to the building geometry, the structure as designed would not fit within the building envelope.

Amherst, MA – Finegold Alexander Architects recently announced the completion and official reopening of the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Old Chapel, which was marked with a ribbon cutting on March 23 in the historic center of campus.

The most iconic and widely

recognized building on campus, the Old Chapel first opened in 1885 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The building closed in 1999 because it no longer met code and accessibility requirements. Today, the Old Chapel has emerged following a two-year, $21 million renovation as a vibrant community

space for student gatherings, exhibits, and events. The project is targeted for LEED Gold certification.

The first floor provides a flexible layout for social gatherings, study, and events and will serve as a general campus resource.

The top floor Great Hall provides a large open space for lectures, seminars, performances, and banquets. The building will be available for weddings and private events in the future.

The restoration preserved the best aspects of the historic building while adding an accessible arrival sequence

and a contemporary glass-entry addition.

Internally, an elevator, building systems, and technology were sensitively woven into the historic fabric. An underground mechanical vault houses the main mechanical, electrical, and plumbing service to the building and ties into the campus utility infrastructure. A 12-panel interactive display wall on the first floor can be used for presentations, exhibits, or general campus information.

First opened in 1886, the Old Chapel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. The project is on track to achieve LEED Gold certification.

JM Electrical Completes HCC Lynnfield, MA – JM Electrical Company, Inc. has completed an energy services project at Holyoke Community College (HCC). The company worked with the Department of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM) and Energy Management and Controls Services (EMC) on the upgrades.

JM Electrical participated in a complete energy upgrade of the campus, including installing air handling units (AHUs), hot water pumps, and variable air volume (VAV) boxes in all classrooms.

Whereas VAV boxes are typically replaced, JM performed a unique service of retrofitting the boxes. Additionally, JM’s staff assisted in reworking existing fire alarms to accommodate a ceiling replacement.

With the major energy upgrades completed in the majority of the classrooms, office suites, and HVAC systems, HCC will experience reduced energy consumption.

“We are proud of our work at Holyoke Community College because the energy upgrades will significantly improve the comfort level of students and professors throughout the campus,” said Adam Palmer, project manager at JM Electrical. “The changes will also preserve the school’s infrastructure for years to come.”

Boston – MassDevelopment has issued a $41.3 million tax-exempt bond on behalf of Wentworth Institute of Technology Inc. (WIT), a private, coeducational higher education institution in Boston.

Wentworth is using bond proceeds to build a 78,000sf multipurpose academic building on Parker Street.

The building will house Wentworth’s new biological engineering program; its biomedical, civil engineering, and

experiential learning programs; and its Accelerate, Wentworth Innovation + Entrepreneurship Center, which houses interdisciplinary extracurricular programs that aim to build innovative and entrepreneurial thinking; and science and manufacturing labs.

The building will also include a manufacturing lab with 3D printers, office space, and presentation and gathering areas for students, faculty, and staff.

Boston – Bentley University students, faculty, and administrators celebrated the reopening of Jennison Hall following a fast-track, $22.5 million laboratory and classroom renovation and expansion designed by Boston-based ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge, whose design provides a diverse mix of new learning, social, lab, and office spaces.

Built in 1966, Jennison Hall, with its 33 classrooms, is the largest teaching facility on the university’s Waltham campus.

The original plan was to design and build out the 85,000sf project in phases.

To save the university the time, cost, and disruption of an ongoing construction project spanning several years, the team developed a creative alternative strategy to complete the construction in less than seven months. This was accomplished by taking the entire building out of service last summer and fall, relocating classes throughout the campus, and using a fast-track approach. The renovation was completed in time for the January start of spring semester.

Consigli Construction Company is the construction manager, and CSL Consulting is the owner’s project manager.

The transformed interiors feature transparency and flexibility, with glass walls and daylit rooms that place science investigation and teaching on display.

To fulfill the goal of integrating science into a business curriculum, the new layout at Jennison Hall locates three new, multidisciplinary science instructional labs for chemistry, physics, biology, and Earth and environmental sciences, providing a more collaborative and flexible teaching environment.

Adjoining the science labs is a new “dry” laboratory, modeled after Bentley University’s popular MBA Studio and called a collaboratory. The collaboratory provides a team-based, flexible learning environment to supplement the more traditional “wet” instructional labs. A variety of teaching spaces, including both active learning classrooms and tiered case study classrooms, occupy the remaining three floors of the building. Teaming areas, social interaction niches, and quiet study spaces throughout the building offer a variety of student experiences. Additionally, the Office of Academic Services for both undergraduate and graduate students was relocated to Jennison Hall.

Lynnfield, MA – JM Electrical Company, Inc., a leader in advanced automated building system installations, has completed project operations at the Ashburnham Westminster Regional School District, located in North Worcester County, approximately 50 miles northwest of Boston. The system was done under a performance contract with New England Trane.

JM Electrical installed the power and controls for the HVAC equipment, provided by Trane, for two schools in the district — Oakmont High School and Overlook Middle School — in order to achieve energy savings for the buildings.

The company’s electricians worked to ensure the project was completed on time and on budget. JM began work on the

schools in June 2016, and they are now fully operational.

“We were pleased to work with the Ashburnham Westminster school system in upgrading their HVAC controls,” said John Guarracino, project manager at JM Electrical.

The team delivered over $4 million in needed facility upgrades including a new roof, HVAC equipment, a biomass boiler fueled by wood pellets, and a state-of-theart building automation system, according to Chris Marshall, general manager of energy services at New England Trane.

“Trane guarantees energy savings exceeding $5 million over the 20-year term enabled by M.G.L. CH25a, 11i, which will be used by the district to pay for the project,” he said.

The concept provides able-bodied seniors with a residence more suitable to staying independent longer. While residents have downsized from the traditional family home, they still live in a neighborhood that is private, with community connections and services meant to provide comfort, safety, and security. In other words, they have the sense of home ownership without having to shovel the snow off the roof.

Brookline Senior Center

Brookline, MA – GTC Construction Management, of Haverhill, recently completed major renovations at the Brookline Senior Center and expects to complete a major renovation at the Evelyn Kirrane Aquatics Center in May. The Brookline Senior Center project included the renovation of c​lassrooms, learning spaces as well as the ​basement and fitness area of the facility.

Jonathan Keevers, president of GTC, said: “We saw prebid how critical the senior center project was to the seniors of Brookline and how it was in the very heart of a place they call home every day. We strove to be the least invasive as possible and even did disruptive and intrusive work off hours. Our dedication paid off and the seniors are now occupying beautifully renovated teaching and work spaces that include a state-of-the-art fitness facility.”

Work at the Aquatics Center includes concrete pool deck repair at the underside of the pool deck, pool deck and tile repair, and repair adjustment of an existing light fixture lowering device. Work also includes modifications to the existing locker rooms, unisex toilet facilities, and staff offices including selective demolition, masonry, doors, storefront, finishes, specialty items, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical work.

About the Aquatics Center • It is said to have been the first municipally operated indoor bathhouse/pool in the United States.

• In 1897 a new bathhouse contained rain baths, tubs, a tank 80” x 26” lined with English white glazed brick, another tank 22” x 10”, about 50 dressing rooms, a gallery, and a small laundry for towels and suits.

• Noted Swiss-American architect, Franz Joseph Untersee designed renovations in 1899 in which three rooms were added, including a hair drying room for the women.

• The floor of the large pool had mosaic tiling and there were marble steps at each end which were removed in 1903 for safety reasons.

• The interior had lettering on the walls including the vote of Town Meeting establishing the bath house, quotations from poets, and the names of famous swimmers, including, Ulysses, Leander, Charlemagne, Nicolo of Cola, and Franklin.

• The newly founded swimming club increased its membership and gave several exhibitions of swimming exercises and polo at the bathhouse.

• By 1916, $15,600 was spent to renovate and improve the operation.

• Shower baths were added in 1922.

• In 1929, free instructions in swimming and life saving were given. In 1949, a water pageant was held with the setting a Cape Cod fishing wharf. A group of anglers started a bait casting club.

• The new swimming pool designed by Anderson, Beckwith and Haible was constructed in 1956.

DEAR HEIDI Q: How are fire ratings of Concrete Masonry assemblies calculated, and for fire code compliance, are listing services such as UL required?

-Fire Rating Expertise Desired

A: Dear FRED: Section 721 of the IBC recognizes several methods to calculate the fire resistance for CMU walls. The equivalent thickness method is the most commonly used, and the most cost effective. It takes into account extensive industry research, the results of ASTM E-119 testing and aggregate type. Equivalent thickness (ET) is determined in accordance with ASTM C140 and is the solid thickness of the concrete if it were to be recast without the cores. For example, if an 8x8x16 cored unit were to be compacted to fit the same height and length profile, it would have an ET (depth) of 4.04”. Based on the tables in the IBC, for normal weight density, the fire rating would be 1 3/4 hours. If enough light weight aggregate was added to the mix to make it medium weight density, the fire rating would be 2 hours. This is calculated using linear interpolation based on the percent of each aggregate type used in the manufacturing process, as outlined in the IBC. The ET of a 100% solid unit, a solidly grouted unit, or unit with its empty cores filled with a material such as Perlite (an aggregate produced from a volcanic rock), is equal to its actual thickness. For example, an 8” partially reinforced wall with the empty cells filled with Perlite has an ET of 7 5/8”. The fire rating for this assembly would be 4 hours. Listing services such as UL, although not explicitly recognized by the IBC, essentially use this same calculation method to determine their fire ratings. by Anthony Papantonis Higher expectations from potential residents, encroaching competition, and the ability for operators to efficiently adjust to a community’s greatest demand in the continuum of care are driving change in today’s senior living market.

These factors, combined with our steadily growing population of people living beyond age 85 (projected to triple from 7.3 million to 21 million by 2050), are keeping the senior living industry in motion.

Following a surge in senior housing construction as the Baby Boomers began entering retirement age a few years ago, there has been a leveling off in construction starts nationally, according to data from the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC). Some of the slowdown has been attributed to an equilibrium now being realized between supply and demand, as more than 5,900 senior housing units came online in the fourth quarter of 2016. Additional factors include a rise

in construction costs (including a labor shortage), as well as a pulling back on construction lending by traditional banks.

More recently, however, a survey published in December by investment banking and advisory services firm Lancaster Pollard indicated that 70% of the senior living facilities operators said that they were likely to “pursue a renovation project” in 2016, whereas, when asked this same question in 2017, an even higher percentage (75%) said a construction project was likely.

And for those operating or building in Massachusetts, the news is even more encouraging. Last year, the Boston Globe reported that due to the concentration of wealth in the state (especially in eastern Mass.), occupancy rates for the Bay State were four percentage points higher than the national average — at nearly 95% — which translates into continued strong demand for the region.

For one thing, competition among senior living facilities for clients, particularly on the high end of the market, is fierce. Where possible, operators are either building new facilities (Massachusetts ranked seventh in the nation in new construction starts with 1,459 units in 2015) or renovating dated ones to better compete in the marketplace.

As new senior living communities are being constructed or repositioned,

operators are enhancing their amenity packages to include features such as wellness centers (including activities like yoga, meditation, and tai chi), expanded dining options that one might find in an upscale hotel, as well as concierge-type fee-for-services. Also, as the Boomers are becoming more comfortable in the digital age, communities are incorporating a wide range of new technologies, from

ensuring dependable Wi-Fi access, to offering health-monitoring devices that help to manage medications, monitor vital signs, or activate an alert when fall-prone residents are at risk.

There is also a shift in the type of buildings being constructed. Senior Housing News predicts that 2017 will be a comeback for independent living. The growth in this segment is attributed to the steady economic growth the country has undergone following the recession, with the stock and real estate markets

(and retirement funds) reaching record highs. During the uncertainty of the recession, aging seniors and their families often postponed the decision to move to independent and assisted living.

Another trend that shows no sign of slowing down is the increase in memory care units being built. The Alzheimer’s Association recently reported that while 5.4 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s, that number is expected to soar to 16 million by 2050. As the need for additional memory care units increases, some operators are converting other units to meet this demand. In Weston, Mass., Maplewood Senior Living recently converted 13 assisted living units into 22 memory care units, indicative of the shift in thinking among senior care providers that allows residents flexibility to age in place (in lieu moving to a skilled nursing facility) in their retirement communities as they progress along the continuum of care.

There is no doubt that the senior living industry will continue to adapt to the changing demands of our aging population. However, to remain viable, owners, contractors, and architects alike will be charged with delivering creative solutions to meet this ever-growing and evolving industry.

Dracut, MA – Maugel Architects was recently chosen to design Circle Health’s new 30,000sf three-story medical office building located at the corner of Broadway and Loon Hill Road in Dracut. The new ground-up facility will provide the community with a Circle Health Urgent Care and Lowell General Hospital patient service center, physician practices in OB/

GYN and primary care, and diabetes and endocrinology specialty services.

Maugel previously designed Circle Health outpatient centers in Westford and Billerica earlier this year.

Other team members include Equity Alliance, LLC. The project is expected to be completed in late 2018.

Plainville, MA – Maugel Architects announced that construction has begun on Sturdy Memorial Hospital’s new 30,000sf medical office building that will provide the community with a Sturdy Memorial Urgent Care center, patient services, and physician services in OB/GYN and primary care.

The two-story medical office building, designed by Maugel, will replace the onestory structure that was razed to make way for the new facility.

Maugel worked closely with Sturdy Memorial to design a modern environment that maximizes clinical space and provides

clear wayfinding for patients and visitors.

Other team members include Equity Alliance, LLC, and Dellbrook | JKS Construction.

Particular attention was given to creating efficient workflows tailored to physician working patterns and to providing seamless care to patients.

“Providing access to high-quality healthcare at the local level is essential to the strength of the community,” said Colby Cavanagh, project manager at Maugel Architects.

The project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2017.

Often, it’s not until we help our aged parents navigate the system that we see how much details matter when designing ambulatory healthcare facilities.

Join me for a fictional visit to Mom’s primary care provider.

As someone with 20-plus years practicing healthcare design — over half it on the client side — I nonetheless continue to learn. Some of what I’ve learned lately is due to a 94-year-old ball of fire named Mary Jane, my mom.

Mom gave up driving upon entering assisted living. This means one of us “kids” drives her to her appointment.

Her provider is conveniently located near other frequent destinations, allowing us to accomplish other tasks that day.

Incorporate Hydrotherapy for Health, Wellness, and a Competitive Edge

by Deborah C. Cox Housing construction for the geriatric population is on the rise, with assisted living and memory care properties driving this robust trend. And while senior facilities typically include exercise rooms and areas for other recreational outlets, some forward-thinking facilities are installing hydrotherapy rooms both for its benefits and for a leg up on competition.

Buoyancy, warm water, and hydrostatic pressure are three characteristics of water that give therapists at senior living facilities the advantage to help residents progress faster through therapy. Exercises in water can be performed sooner than those same exercises on land. This is particularly important for seniors who, in addition to aches and pains of the natural aging process, may be recovering from a surgical procedure or degenerative issues, such as arthritis.

Water therapy helps people exercise as they heal. The buoyancy of water creates a non-weight-bearing environment. As a result, there is less stress on joints and muscles. This makes it easier for seniors to exercise and gain the confidence it takes to continue their therapy treatments.

In addition, hydrostatic pressure supports muscles during exercise, thereby minimizing pain. Aquatic exercise makes it possible for seniors to stand longer, walk

less pain, and helps physical therapists work effectively on core stabilization.

Aquatic therapy has proven results for those recovering from strokes. The natural buoyancy of water aids in balance protocols during rehabilitation. With oversight from physical or occupational therapists, a simple walk down the length of a pool can improve gait pattern. If the pool has a water current feature, therapists can use this to provide

From back surgeries to progressive diseases and arthritic issues, water’s antigravitational attribute makes a big impact on recovery. Moreover, being in the water helps stroke patients overcome their fear of falling and builds confidence for being more surefooted when on land.

Since not all senior living communities are created equal, those with a specialized hydrotherapy pool and supporting

staff can offer benefits that give them a competitive advantage in the senior housing market. Many hydrotherapy pools come equipped with a water current feature, resistance jets, deep wells, workstations, and treadmills. Having a hydrotherapy pool onsite eliminates the need to send residents off the premises, a benefit that helps improve the facility’s overall function and increase their return on investment.

Boston – MassDevelopment has issued a $13.4 million tax-exempt bond on behalf of Coppersmith Village Rental Limited Partnership, an affiliate of the Neighborhood of Affordable Housing Inc. (NOAH), an East Boston regional community development corporation.

The bond proceeds will be used to build Coppersmith Village, a 56-unit rental housing facility. Forty-one units will be for households earning no more than 60% of the area median income.

Coppersmith Village will transform a former ironworks company site at Border Street and will include 15 for-sale townhomes and about 3,000sf of groundfloor retail space.

Framingham, MA – A special town meeting of Framingham residents has approved tax-increment financing (TIF) agreements for two proposed transit-oriented developments and a new Urban Center Housing Tax Increment Financing (UCH-TIF) plan and zone for downtown Framingham. Previous zoning laws discouraged developers from creating the kind of new units that appeal to young professionals and others who may otherwise be attracted to Framingham. Town officials see the rezoning as critical to encouraging transit-oriented development.

Based on projections for three hypothetical parcels, the town estimates that new development could accrue up to $950,000 in additional commercial and residential property taxes for Framingham.

Construction Industry Balances Optimism with Lack of Skilled Workers

by Mike Dion When a new year rolls in, so do revived feelings of eagerness, motivation, and optimism. While the economy continues to improve, many in the construction industry look to an opportunistic year in 2017.

With a national unemployment rate at 4.8%, and 227,000 new jobs added in January 2017, this year is already seeming to project good fortunes overall. Among those 227,000 jobs, the construction field is happy to boast adding 36,000 to the workforce. Here in the New England area, Boston’s commercial and multifamily building construction is up 50% from 2015, with a total of $7.58 billion in starts for 2016. Some of the contributing factors to this substantial growth included

continued low interest rates and morelenient lending standards from banks to business.

While all signs point toward a bright future, there is still one glaring concern for employers in construction: Who is going to do the work?

The newest and biggest challenge facing construction is the lack of skilled laborers. This is not just a local concern

Other solutions include promoting the values of ABC, the programs we offer, encouraging Young Professionals Group involvement, training and education, as well as encouraging high school and college-aged students to explore the many career paths within the construction industry through promoted school recruiting events. By implementing these solutions, we can ensure success for our workforce and our industry, while we also enjoy what looks to be a prosperous 2017.
