Israel criticised over demolition of ‘unrecognised’ Bedouin villages by Harriet Sherwood (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 8/3/2010 1:01:46 AM

Human rights groups say latest round of bulldozing of illegal homes will lead to forced removals of nomadic Arabs The demolition of a Bedouin village in Israel’s Negev desert has led human rights groups to warn that a new wave of forced removals of nomadic Arabs could be under way. Forty-five homes in the village of alAraqib were bulldozed at dawn a week ago, after a court ruling that they were constructed illegally. Around 300 residents, all Israeli citizens and half of them children, were made homeless in temperatures of up to 40C. Many more “unrecognised” Bedouin villages in the Negev could face demolition after the approval last month of a plan to transfer large numbers of Bedouin Arabs to government-designated townships in the north of the area. The planning committee of Beersheba, the largest city in the area, allocated Bedouin villages to three categories: no recognition and full population transfer (12 villages); partial recognition and partial or full transfer (17 villages); and full recognition (13 villages). Families in the first two categories would be forcibly moved to seven special Bedouin-only townships created by the government. About half the Bedouin population of southern Israel already lives in the

townships, which have basic services such as water, electricity and sewage. But the remainder want to remain in their villages, where they can continue with small-scale agriculture and grazing their herds. “This could well be the opening to more demolitions of Bedouin villages,” said Nili Baruch of Bimkom, an Israeli planning rights group. “There is a clear plan and a clear goal.” The Bedouin families in al-Araqib and other villages in the Negev claim ownership of the land on the basis of residency stretching back more than 140 years and the payment of taxes during the Ottoman period and the British mandate. But Israel took over the land shortly after declaring its state in 1948, saying the inhabitants failed to produce deeds proving their ownership. It was then designated a military zone. “For the past 60 years, the government has been trying to minimise the amount of land for Bedouins,” said Yeela Raanan, of the Regional Council for the Unrecognised Villages. Successive plans had sought to concentrate Bedouins into small authorised villages and erase unauthorised communities. “Redeeming the land is part of the Zionist project. Any land held or claimed by Arabs is a problem.” The demolition of al-Araqib came within days of the Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, warning about the threat of losing a Jewish majority in the Negev. Speaking to government colleagues

about the Jewish nature of the state of Israel, he said: “We are under real attack on this issue. The meaning could be that different elements will demand national rights within Israel, for example, in the Negev, if we allow for a region without a Jewish majority. It has happened in the Balkans, and it is a palpable threat.” Human Rights Watch condemned Israeli policies in the region. “Israel employs systematically discriminatory policies in the Negev,” said Joe Stork, HRW’s deputy Middle East director. “It is tearing down historic Bedouin villages before the courts have even ruled on pending legal claims, and is handing out Bedouin land to allow Jewish farmers to set up ranches.” Israelsays the Bedouins cultivate land that belongs to the state and build unauthorised homes. The vast area, mostly uninhabited desert, was earmarked several years ago for an ambitious development programme, Blueprint Negev, to attract new Jewish immigrants and Israelis away from the overcrowded coastal cities. Only around 7% of Israel’s population lives in the Negev. The project also aimed to attract Jewish immigrants from abroad, deliberately marketing the challenges of desert living. “Blueprint Negev answers the need for Jews in the diaspora looking to make aliyah [immigration] the pioneering way,” according to the former JNF president Ronald Lauder. Villagers from al-Araqib and their supporters held Friday prayers last week under a makeshift awning close

to the twisted metal and rubble that had been their homes. Following a heavily-policed protest, villagers planned to begin rebuilding their community. • Israel • Middle East Harriet Sherwood guardian.co.uk© Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions| More Feeds Hija del Zion para Israel Support Israel • David Cameron’s plain talking has its place | Oliver Miles Plain talking is important in good diplomacy, but David Cameron should check with the Foreign Office what the impact will be firstA double-page spread in the Guardian last week on the prime minister's... • Israel president Shimon Peres accuses Britain of pro-Arab bias Veteran politician claims MPs pander to Muslim voters with anti-Jewish rhetoric and glorify Palestinians as underdogsIsrael's president, Shimon Peres, has accused some British MPs of pandering to anti... The largest and fastest growing proIsrael support group in the US What’s the largest and fastest growing proIsrael support group in the United States? AIPAC? No. The ZOA (Zionist Organization of America)? Not even close. The largest and fastest growing pro-Israel support group in the United States is one many Jews have never heard of, but I can tell you that several hundred of their members are among my nearly 1,000 followers on Twitter. The initials are CUFI: Christians United for Israel. In Washington, D.C.’s convention center they danced the horah, sang Hebrew songs, and waved American and Israeli flags. Charlie Daniels played Hatikvah on his fiddle. It wasn’t a bar mitzvah, or a gathering of the pro-Israel group AIPAC. It was the fifth annual summit of an even larger pro-Israel organization, the nation’s largest: Christians United for Israel, better known as CUFI. A few hours before addressing the convention, its founder, Pastor John Hagee, explained how CUFI came to exist. “I went to Israel in 1978 as a tourist with a group of people from my church and I came home a Zionist,” he said. “I felt the presence of God in the city of Jerusalem like no place on earth.” Praying at the Western Wall, he realized he had to “do everything in my power to bring Christians and Jews together in an atmosphere of mutual esteem and acceptance.” At first, he didn’t know how to begin. But in 1981, after an Israeli airstrike blew up the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak, “the American media went after Israel hammer and claw. I saw the door of opportunity open. I told my wife as we watched the television with the news anchor berating Israel and Menachem Begin, ‘We are going to have a night for Israel.’?” Hagee approached the local Jewish leaders to suggest a gala fundraiser. He deadpanned, “They looked at me like I had a serious and contagious

rash.” Hagee won them over, held a news conference with an orthodox rabbi announcing the event, and “within hours started receiving death threats at the church. We had the night for Israel, and it was terrific.” When a bomb threat came, he remembered declaring, “If these guntoting anti-Semites think they can shut us down by threatening us, we are going to do it every year until they get used to it!” Oh – and one other thing. In addition, antipathy toward CUFI may be attributable partly to aversion to the rest of the Christian right’s political agenda. As for Jews’ concern about Christian proselytizing, Ortiz says suspicion fades “when they see we are not trying to convert them.” Jews are approximately 1.7% of the population of the United States – and shrinking. While American Jews are disproportionate donors to political causes, the support that Israel enjoys in the US has little to do with the votes of American Jewry – most of which go to the Democrats regardless of who the candidates are. The support that Israel enjoys in the

United States is attributable to shared values and to the strong support of a huge Christian community in the US that is in our court. Let’s try not to fool ourselves. Germany: Criticism of First Turkish -German Minister Grows by Esther (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel)

Germany: Criticism of First TurkishGerman Minister Grows Via Spiegel: Aygül Özkan, 38, was meant to be the next great hope for a new generation of German politicians. In April, she became the first person of Turkish origin to be appointed as a government minister at the state level . Indeed, it was rare that a politician had been given as much advance praise or had been saddled with such great expectations. “She’s a major role model, with her competence and her character and she will get off to a good start and do a good job,” Christian Wulff, then the state governor of Lower Saxony and now Germany’s president, said at the time. He said she would also help to “prevent parallel societies” from forming, a reference to immigrant ghettos many politicians fear are developing in German cities. At the time of her appointment as social minister, Özkan was feted not just by her party, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), but across the political spectrum. But Özkan’s time in office so far has been marred by controversy. Only days before taking up her job, Özkan said in an interview that “Christian symbols” — specifically crucifixes, “do not belong in state-run schools.” She added that Muslim headscarves don’t, either — positions that had even been backed by Germany’s highest court. But

Submitted at 8/3/2010 1:39:00 AM

pressure from within her party was tremendous and Wulff reprimanded his protégé, who in turn apologized. Later, Özkan sparked controversy because of employee contracts she had signed as a manager at TNT, a postal services company. At the company, some workers received wages of only €7.50 ($9.80) per hour. Employment lawyers accused her of having created “working conditions that were at the legal limits.” The politician responded by describing the criticism as “absurd” and “unfounded.” And last week, she caused an outcry when she called on journalists to sign a so-called “media charter for Lower Saxony,” in which they were supposed to agree to common standards for reporting about integration efforts in the state. (…) Özkan then abandoned her plans. It was the second major gaffe in her short term in office. Indeed, the impression she has given so far has bordered on disastrous. Özkan is currently on vacation and has refused to grant interviews. So what has gone wrong with Germany’s first minister

UK: Majority have no opinion about Islam by Esther (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 8/2/2010 11:54:00 PM

UK: Majority have no opinion about Islam Not a catchy headline, but much closer to reality than the Guardian’s “ Three-quarters of non-Muslims believe Islam negative for Britain“ Apparently, the Guardian, and other news agencies reporting about this survey, did not bother to read the report. Just scanning the report ( PDF), and going past the headlines page (“75% believed Islam and Muslims had provided a negative contribution to society”), I couldn’t see the data proving this. The data from “Islamophobic” Britain is that 36% think that Muslims do not engage positively in society (23% think they do). 32% think that Muslim preach hatred (30% disagree) and 36% that Islam is outdated (14% disagree).

26% think Islam cannot positively contribute to modern society (27% disagree). 24% think that Muslims are terrorists (37% disagree). And if you’re looking for the one thing that a majority agree on: 59% think Islam oppresses women (6% disagree). It’s possible that neutral answers come from people who think Islam is bad, but don’t want to say it. But that’s a conclusion, not data. The Islamic Education and Research Academy (iERA), which conducted

the survey, seems to be a missionary organization. Most of their questions and conclusions focus on how nonMuslims experience dawah and how Muslims could do dawah better. The question is whether inviting people “to adopt the Islamic world view” is really the way to convince people that they’re wrong that Muslims are “forcing Islam on us” (as 13% think). Rotter Member’s Death Threat by Richard Silverstein (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 8/3/2010 2:04:53 AM

Rotter member's homicidal incitment After mounting an intense DoS attack against this blog and two others in Israel, my web host seems to have figured out a defense against the assault. But now, some members at the Rotter forum, among whose circle this assault may’ve originated, have resorted to homicidal ranting. One poster wrote the following(Hebrew): I’m in favor of erasing Silverstein from this world at the hands of a Mossad garotte. Another member posted a picture of me in the thread. The only thing missing was a bull’s eye. I’m waiting for a Facebook group like the one they prepared for MK Haneen Zoabi calling for hanging her because she joined the Gaza flotilla. I posted myself in the thread thanking them for their reception. The DoS attack brought my blog to the attention of thousands more Israelis, via stories in Ynet and Maariv, who’d never heard of it till

then. A reporter from one of Israel’s major alternative papers spent an hour with me on the phone last night preparing a major profile of me and my blog. As far as I’m concerned they only hurt their own cause through this foolishness. And asking the Mossad to kill me doesn’t do any favors for the reputation of Israel’s overseas spooks either. And can there be any doubt in any reasonable person’s mind that this incitement to murder is a symptom of the deep dysfunction within Israel nowadays in which peace activists and human rights NGOs are under physical, verbal and legal attack as never before? Germany: "People are afraid of this Islam … that’s why people also don’t want to see Turkey in the EU" by Esther (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 8/3/2010 1:27:00 AM

Germany: “People are afraid of this Islam … that’s why people also don’t want to see Turkey in the EU” Via Qantara: Chairman of the German Bundestag’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Ruprecht Polenz, argues in favour of Turkish accession to the EU, and grapples with negative western perceptions of the nation, as well as of Islam. He spoke to Eren Güvercin Opponents of a full membership deal argue among other things that Turkey would not fit in with Europe on a cultural level. What is your view of these misgivings?

Ruprecht Polenz: This argument is one of the main reasons for public hostility to the idea, whether it is more or less subliminal or openly expressed. Upon closer consideration, this sense that Turkey somehow doesn’t belong to Europe, that it is somehow different, ultimately conceals the question of differing religious affiliation, and a highly negative image of Islam. People are afraid of this Islam, they want to keep it at arm’s length, and that’s why people also don’t want to see Turkey in the EU. What is the source of these qualms? Ruprecht Polenz: They are deeply rooted in history. If you look at school textbooks and the perception of history, the Occident is always presented in a kind of perpetual strife with the Orient, although closer

analysis reveals that Islam was always an integral part of European history. The Ottoman Empire always had its part to play in the concerto of major powers. The modern fundamental European conviction that religion and the state should be separated actually makes it impossible to construct insurmountable political obstacles out of religious convictions. How a Tolerant Country Can Avoid Being a Doormat for Intolerant Countries

Fayyad: A unilateral declaration of statehood is a pipe dream‘Palestinian Prime Minister’ Salam Fayyad, who for the last year has been telling us that he’s going to unilaterally declare a state reichlet in August 2011, has finally realized that’s not going to happen. Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has ruled out any unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood. “There is not going to be a unilateral declaration of statehood,” Fayyad told The Media Line during a private meeting in his office. “What’s the point? We did that in 1988, and what did it get us?” The statement was a public rejection of increasing calls from minority Palestinian factions to recalibrate the Palestinian struggle away from a twostate solution to the Palestinian-Israeli

conflict and towards a shared, binational, secular and democratic state. “The Palestinians have used this as a sort of whip to say if we do not move ahead towards the two-state solution, then we will move ahead towards a one-state solution and everything will be lost for Israel by sheer force of democracy,” Dr. Shmuel Bar, Director of Studies at the Institute of Policy and Strategy at IDC Herzliya told The Media Line. “The narrative of ‘Palestine from the river to the sea’ has always been popular among Palestinians, so when you have a public opinion poll as to whether they would prefer a one-state solution or a two-state solution, you will see a lot prefer a one-state

solution. But it’s just part of the old vision of liberating all of Palestine and doesn’t have an effect on actual political decision-making.” This seems to be a rejection of the Kosovo option as well, and if so, that’s really good news.
