Calling Gaza a prison camp is an understatement | Laila El-Haddad by Laila El-Haddad (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 8/5/2010 6:35:52 AM
There may be some semblance of civil life and stability in Gaza, but it is our freedoms that are under siege It’s three years since I’ve been back to Gaza. Much has happened since my last visit. Fatah waged a failed coup and now rules only the West Bank, while Hamas is in charge of Gaza. Israel launched its deadly Cast Lead assault. Fuel shortages. Electricity crises. And so on. I needed to regain perspective. So I walked and I talked and I listened. I went to the beach where women – skinny jeans and all – were smoking water pipes, swimming and generally having a good time, irrespective of the purported Hamas ban on women smoking sheesha. During the eight hours of electricity we get each day, I logged on to the internet and browsed the Englishlanguage papers. It seemed like suddenly everyone was an expert on Gaza, claiming they knew what it’s really like. Naysayers and their ilk have been providing us with the same “ evidence” that Gaza is burgeoning: the markets are full of produce, fancy restaurants abound, there are pools and parks and malls … all is well in the most isolated place on earth – Gaza, the “ prison camp” that is not. If you take things at face value, and set aside for a moment the bizarre idea that the availability of such amenities precludes the existence of hardship, you’ll be inclined to believe what you read. So, is there a humanitarian crisis or not? That seems to be the question of the hour. But it is the wrong one to be asking. The message I’ve been hearing over and over again since I returned to Gaza is this: the siege is not a siege on foods; it is a siege on freedoms – freedom to move in and out of Gaza, freedom to fish more than three miles out at to sea, freedom to learn, to work, to farm, to build, to live, to prosper.
Gaza was never a place with a quantitative food shortage; it is a place where many people lack the means to buy food and other goods because of a closure policy whose tenets are “ no development, no prosperity, and no humanitarian crisis“, Gisha, the Legal Centre for the Freedom of Movement, explained in a press release. The move from a “white list” of allowable imports to a “black list” might sound in good in theory (ie everything is banned except xyz, to only the following things are banned) but in practice only 40% of Gaza’s supply needs are being met, according to Gisha. The Palestinian Federation of Industries estimates that only a few hundred of Gaza’s 3,900 factories and workshops will be able to start up again under present conditions Sure, there are a handful of fancy restaurants in Gaza. And yes, there is a new mall (infinitely smaller and less glamorous than it has been portrayed). As for food, it is in good supply, having found its way here either through Israeli crossings or the vast network of tunnels between Gaza and Egypt. Of course, this leaves aside the question of who in Gaza’s largely impoverished population (the overwhelming majority of whose income is less than $2 a day, 61% of whom are food insecure) can really afford mangoes at $4 a kilo or grapes at $8 a kilo. A recent trip to the grocery store revealed that meat has risen to $13 a kilo. Fish, once a cheap source of protein, goes for $15 to $35 a kilo. And so on. Prices are on par with those of a developed country, except we are not in a developed country. We are a dedeveloped occupied territory. All of the above adds up to the erasure of the market economy and its replacement with a system where everyone is turned into some kind of welfare recipient. But people don’t want handouts and uncertainty and despair; they want their dignity and their freedom, employment and prosperity and possibility.
Perhaps most significantly, they want to be able to move freely – something they still cannot do. Let’s take the case of Fadi. His father recently had heart surgery. He wanted to seek followup care abroad, at his own expense, but he doesn’t fall into the specified categories allowed out of Gaza for travel, whether through Egypt or Israel. “He’s not considered a level-one priority,” Fadi explained. “Can you please tell me why I can’t decide when I want to travel and what hospital I can take him to?” Even the cream of Gazan highschool students must lobby the Israeli authorities long and hard to be allowed out to complete their studies. They literally have to start a campaign in conjunction with human rights groups to raise enough awareness about their plight, and then look for local individuals to blog about their progress, explained Ibrahim, who was approached by one organisation to “sponsor a student”. I have no doubt that if Stephanie Gutmann and Melanie Phillips lived in Gaza their principle worry would not be about “what parts of their bodies they can display”, it would be the fact that they would not be allowed out again. It would be because everything from the kind of food they would have on their plate to when they can turn on the lights to what they can clothe those bodies with and whether or not they can obtain a degree is determined by an occupying power. Using the phrase “prison camp” to describe Gaza, as Britain’s prime minister did, is not vile rhetoric. It is an understatement and even a misnomer. Prisoners are guilty of a crime, yet they are guaranteed access to certain things – electricity and water, even education – where Gazans are not. What crime did Gazans commit, except, to quote my late grandmother, “being born Palestinian”? Ketchup and cookies may be flowing to Gaza in slightly greater quantities than before. But so bloody what? Goods for export are not flowing out. Nor, for that matter, are people. So
while there may be some semblance of civil life and stability in Gaza, there is absolutely no political horizon or true markers of freedom to speak of. And as long as freedom of movement is stifled, whether by Israel or Egypt, and export-quality goods, which account for a large portion of Gaza’s manufacturing output, are forbidden from leaving Gaza, all the malls and mangoes in the world won’t make a bit of difference. • Comments on this article are set to remain open for 24 hours from the time of publication but may be closed overnight • Gaza • Palestinian territories • Israel • Egypt • Civil liberties – international • Middle East Laila El-Haddad guardian.co.uk© Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions| More Feeds Hija del Zion para Israel Support Israel • Lessons from Camp David | Ben White Ten years after Bill Clinton guided failed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, the idea of a negotiation on equal terms is now defunctTen years ago this month, Israelis and Palestinians gathered at Camp ... • Off the hook: Israel’s own Widgery inquiry into Bloody Monday | Chris Doyle Israel cannot be trusted to investigate its military over the Gaza flotilla raid. Border Clash: A Case Study in Reuters Photography by Honest Reporting (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 8/5/2010 3:39:00 AM
The sheer number of photos involved makes this post both daunting and necessary. Daunting, because 25 is a lot of images (and captions) to look over and post. Necessary, because this is the only way to demonstrate how far over the top Reuters photographers went in covering Tuesday’s clash along the Israeli-Lebanese border. The images also raise some very troubling questions. The Issues 1. Five photographers, (in addition to an unknown number of stringers) from one news service covering what was supposed to be routine IDF border maintenance work is astounding. The Reuters photographers identified with photo credits are Ali Hashisho, Hamad Almakt, Kamel Jaber, Baz Ratner, and Karamallah Daher (not to be confused with AP photographer Ronith Daher who also covered the border skirmish). Ratner and Almakt worked on the Israeli side of the border. The rest of the images are from the Lebanese side. 2. Reuters’ coverage and access to so many positions along the border makes us wonder if some or all of these photographers expected to “only” cover IDF gardening or the start of the next Lebanon war. Reuters’ photos simply blew away the other news agencies. Had the skirmish escalated, the wire service would have been well-poised to produce lots of gory images of dead and injured Lebanese soldiers and civilians. 3. It’s reasonable to assume Reuters’ picture desk staff and editors knew what was going on. There’s no way the picture desk could have been flooded with these kinds of images without higher ups wondering how so many photographers were able to share the same scoop. 4. Some images of Israeli soldiers taken from the Lebanese side of the border are so close, it’s a miracle that more journalists weren’t killed or injured by IDF fire. In the heat of battle, it’s very easy to confuse large camera equipment, like a zoom lens, with a weapon. As it was, Assaf Abu Rahhal of the pro-Syrian paper, al-Akhbar was killed, while Ali Chouaib of Hezbollah’s Al-Manar was injured. 5. Seven of the 25 pictures (28 p e r c e n t ) h a v e a n unidentified ”stringer” photo credit; this is very suspicious and leaves a lot of unanswered questions as to who the photographers are. Common practice is for stringers — local free-lance photographers not
employed by the news service — to be credited by name, followed by the word “Stringer” or “STR” to indicate the photographer’s status. None of the seven stringer photo credits identified anyone by name. 6. One photographer deserving closer scrutiny is Ali Hashisho. Judging from his especially close access and captions, it’s worth asking if Hashisho also serves in the Lebanese Army, UNIFIL, or some other position that might be a conflict of interest with his work for Reuters. 7. We linked to the images on DayLife for further documentation. 8. HonestReporting obtained six unpublished graphic photos which we are including in this post. Despite their graphic nature, we are including those images because they further demonstrate the unrestricted access the Reuters photographers enjoyed. All are branded with Reuters watermarks. 9. It should be noted that Reuters wasn’t the only agency with photographers on scene. AP, for example, had its own photographic issues which we blogged Tuesday night. However, for the reasons listed above, we’re singling out Reuters for special attention. The Photographs Israeli soldiers hold weapons at a look out point in Kibbutz Misgav Am near the border with Lebanon August 3, 2010. REUTERS/ Karamallah Daher Troubling Questions The pattern we see in these 25 images raises serious questions about Reuters. 1. How were five photographers encouraged to cover routine IDF maintenance work — which is simply non-news? Who tipped them off, and why? 2. How did Reuters photographers get such wide, unrestricted access to the combat zone? 3. Who are the unidentified
stringers? Do they, or any of the five identified photographers, have any conflicts of interest requiring disclosure, in the interests of ethical journalism? Why did Reuters break with journalistic norms and not credit seven images with the photographer’s name? 4. Is it fair to say that the Lebanese source who tipped off journalists to be in the Adaisseh area of the border bears responibility for the death of Assaf Abu Rahhal? 5. Did any higher ups in the Reuters chain of command raise any questions? Once again, Arabs go crazy over Jews praying by Elder of Ziyon (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 8/5/2010 6:18:00 AM
Palestine Press Agency reports yet again: Last night, about 500 settlers stormed the area of Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus. Sources said the local settlers practiced biblical rituals at the grave in a provocative way, and they were under the protection of a large force of Israeli soldiers who helped them to break into the area. Joseph’s Tomb is supposed to be available for Jewish worship under existing agreements between Israel and the PA. These visits are always coordinated. There is no reason to assume that the worshippers are all “settlers.” Hamas was really ticked off: Minister of Waqf in the Gaza
government Taleb Abu Sha’ar called the visit of 300 settlers to Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus a “violation” and “provocative.” The visit, which saw military patrols enter a residential area south of Nablus at midnight and close off streets, culminated in the arrival of 20 military vehicles and six buses of religious Jews who remained under heavy guard at the tomb betwen 1 and 5a.m. Abu Sha’ar said the military measures and the forceful visit to the holy place, believed to be the burial area of patriarch Jospeh and his two sons, was a “violation of the holy place,” and took place on the “pretext that the area belongs only to them [Jewish worshipers].” In 1993 the mosque was partitioned, half was designated for Jewish use and the other half for Muslim use. I guess that all that talk about how Hamas has no problem with Jews is
not quite accurate. Elena Kagan: Pro-Sharia by Robert (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 8/5/2010 5:30:17 AM
Elena Kagan: Pro-Sharia Ignorance and naivete, mixed in with the fashionable Leftist contempt for America. “Critics allege Elena Kagan is sympathetic to Sharia law,” by Caroline May in The Daily Caller, August 5: [...] Kagan’s detractors point to her time as the dean of Harvard Law School as the primary demonstration of her approval of Sharia. Andrew McCarthy, a senior fellow at the National Review Institute, wrote in an article on The National Review’s website that as Harvard Law School dean, Kagan “became the champion of sharia.” Included in Kagan’s offensives as dean, according to McCarthy, was condoning the acceptance of $20 million from Saudi prince Alwaleed bin Talal — who blamed the attacks of 9/11 on American foreign policy — to fund programs on Islam. She also spearheaded the “Islamic Finance Project,” a program aimed at mainstreaming Sharia-compliant
finance in America. And, as some point out, she awarded the Harvard Medal of Freedom to the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Iftikhar Chaudhry, who critics say is a promoter of Sharia. Robert Spencer, the director of Jihad Watch, told The Daily Caller that Kagan would help advance Sharia law in America out of ignorance. “[Kagan] would knowingly and wittingly abet the advance of Sharia, but she wouldn’t do it understanding anything about Sharia. She would do it out of her ignorance.” Spencer attributes Kagan’s fondness for Sharia to naïveté and liberalism. “There is a general tendency on the part of political liberals in the United States today to take a benign view of Islam and Islamic law,” he said. “They are generally uninformed and share a hatred of the West and Western civilization.” According to Spencer, Kagan will be a willing accomplice in the ongoing stealth jihad — or the institution of Sharia into non-Muslim societies via non-violent means, such as the courts and mainstreaming Islamic customs — currently underway against the West. “The goal of the jihad is to
assert the primacy of Islamic law over non-Muslim society and over Muslim societies where it is not fully enforced, and that can take place either through violent or non-violent means and the goal is the same,” he said. [...] Spencer says that he doubts the question of Kagan’s support for Sharia will come up in this week’s Senate debate. “In general American lawmakers have been entirely remiss on this issue. They have been uninformed and content in their ignorance. In some ways they have been bamboozled by the successful efforts by Islamic supremacist groups like the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) to portray any opposition to Sharia as hatred and bigotry and intolerance,” he said. “Of course no politician wants to be portrayed as that. It is the kiss of death.” Posted by Robert on August 5, 2010 5:30 AM | No Comments Print this entry | FaceBook | Email this entry | Digg this | del.icio.us

Information related to Obama’s mom’s travel schedule out of the country have also disappeared. Just when you thought there couldn’t be any more players in the ongoing soap opera over the hunt for President Obama’s original birth certificate and his constitutional eligibility for office, there comes yet another name: Elena Kagan. Yes, the same Elena Kagan nominated by the commander in chief to be the next justice on the U.S. Supreme Court has actually been playing a role for some time in the dispute over whether Obama is legally qualified to be in the White House. Here’s the connection. Kagan served as solicitor general of the United States from March 2009 until May of this year. In that role, she legally represented the U.S. government in numerous cases coming before the Supreme Court. A simple search of the high court’s own website reveals Kagan’s name coming up at least nine times on dockets involving Obama eligibility issues. UK: The Talibanisation of British childhood by hardline parents Via Daily Mail h/t Veritas Universalis Last November, on the steps of Tate Britain, I witnessed a scene that troubles me still. A furious Asian father was shaking his young son and tearing up the picture his child had drawn. The boy kicked and cried. Recognising my face from TV appearances I had made as a commentator on current affairs, the father came across to say ‘hello’. So I asked him what his child had done that had made him so angry. He explained that according to his Islamic mentors, drawing pictures of people was forbidden. I was flabbergasted. After all, this was in the middle of Britain’s multicultural capital – a modern metropolis, not some dusty backstreet UK: page 6

Lebanese leaders continue to contradict themselves by Elder of Ziyon (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 8/5/2010 3:55:00 AM
The backtracking of the Lebanese to save face for what was a premediated, unprovoked attack continues. They have abandoned the lies of Israel crossing the Blue Line, of them only shooting “warning shots,” and others. The latest statement from Lebanese General Jean Kahwaji shows yet again how they cannot keep their story straight: Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) commander General Jean Kahwaji on Wednesday said that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops entered on Tuesday a disputed area along the Blue Line, despite objections from the Lebanese army and UNIFIL, the National News Agency (NNA) reported. Lebanese and Israeli soldiers exchanges fire Tuesday at the border village of Adaisseh in the fiercest clashes since the 2006 July War. The clash resulted in the killing of two Lebanese soldiers, a journalist and a senior Israeli officer. The clashes started after Israeli units attempted to cut down contested trees along the border, which the UN said
Wednesday were within Israeli territory. Kahwaji said the Israeli decision was a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, adding that “ the army agreed to cutting down the trees today after necessary conditions were met.” UNIFIL units supervised on Wednesday morning the removal of trees along the southern border in coordination with the Lebanese army. So the trees that were supposedly in Lebanese territory on Tuesday were allowed to be cut down by Israel on Wednesday? Plus he claims that UNIFIL was objecting to the tree cutting even though it had all been coordinated with them? The IDF did say that UNIFIL asked them to delay the cutting, twice, for unspecified reasons, and the IDF complied. The only part of the IDF story that I believe might be slightly inaccurate is the map they handed out: Looking at the famous picture of the cherry-picker, we see a curve in the road just north of the famous tree: At the point where the road curves, the Blue Line is somewhat closer to the road (Google Maps yellow line only approximates the Blue Line; you can see what is apparently the real
Blue Line right above it): There is still no doubt that the IDF was within its side of the Blue Line, but the Lebanese were much closer – which may account for the accuracy of the sniper gunshot that hit the IDF officer in the head. British woman arrested for walking through Dubai shopping mall in a bikini Pretty soon European women along the Mediterranean beachfronts will need to invest in burqinis — i.e., hazmat suits for beachcombing subjects of Sharia. Sharia Alert from modern, moderate Dubai: “British woman arrested for walking through Dubai shopping mall in a bikini,” by Laura Roberts in the Telegraph, August 5: A British woman has been arrested and charged with indecency after walking through a Dubai shopping mall wearing a bikini, according to reports. She was initially fully dressed in the Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping centre, when she was criticised by an Arabic woman for wearing revealing clothing. Following an argument between the pair the British woman responded by stripping down to her bikini, according to the Daily Mail. Security teams at the mall called the police and the woman was arrested. A source from the Dubai police told the Daily Mail that the woman was revealing much of her legs as well as wearing a low cut top but that she decided to take off the rest of her clothing after the Arabic woman stopped to criticise her. The Dubai Mall contains a number of signs asking women to wear “respectful clothing”…. in Kabul. What harm can there be in a picture? So I asked the man if he owned a camera. ‘Yes,’ he replied. ‘And a video camera.’ So why, I asked, was it acceptable for him to take pictures, but not for his child to draw a stick figure? ‘The madrasa teacher told me children are not allowed to,’ he said, referring to the places of religious instruction for Muslim children, which are the equivalent of Sunday schools for Christians. ‘I am not an educated man, so I must listen to them. (…) Tolerant Muslims who fear and loathe the propagators of Bin Laden’s Islam can see where this will lead. Young British Muslims – too many of whom are way behind in educational achievements and at the bottom of the job market – will be affected unless we can find a way of stopping the ideologues. The full burka has been banned in
France (where the hijab – a headscarf – is also not allowed in schools) and other European nations will follow. In Britain, where personal liberty is sacrosanct, such state actions would appear authoritarian. To me, that hands-off approach makes no sense. Why are we fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan and indulging Taliban values here? Even if it offends liberal principles, the powerful must find a way of stopping Islamicists from promulgating their distorted creed. If they don’t, the future is bleak for Muslims and the country. Many of us British Muslims care deeply about both. Reuters had 5 photographers plus stringers to cover a tree being cut by Elder of Ziyon (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 8/5/2010 3:23:00 AM
Backspin, the Honest Reporting blog, notices the amazing fact that Reuters had no fewer than five photographers and some unidentified stringers covering Tuesday’s events. After examining the 25 photos that Reuters had of the incident, including graphic images, they ask: 1. How were five photographers encouraged to cover routine IDF maintenance work — which is simply non-news? Who tipped them off, and why? 2. How did Reuters photographers get such wide, unrestricted access to the combat zone? 3. Who are the unidentified stringers? Do they, or any of the five identified photographers, have any conflicts of interest requiring
disclosure, in the interests of ethical journalism? Why did Reuters break with journalistic norms and not credit seven images with the photographer’s name? 4. Is it fair to say that the Lebanese source who tipped off journalists to be in the Adaisseh area of the border bears responibility for the death of Assaf Abu Rahhal? 5. Did any higher ups in the Reuters chain of command raise any questions? Remember, these are just the photographers – Backspin isn’t even counting any other Reuters journalists who might have been there. Suzanne and others had noticed the fact that so many journalists were at the scene ahead of time, but Reuters’ coverage is so over the top that it merits serious scrutiny as to whether its Lebanese journalists are also associated with the LAF – or Hezbollah.

Why Israel worries about Turkey by Carl in Jerusalem (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 8/5/2010 5:53:00 AM
Why Israel worries about Turkey Most of the stories I have seen that discuss Israel’s concerns over Turkey’s increasingly cozy relationship with Iran are very vague and general. They talk about military cooperation and Israel’s sale of its most advanced technologies to Turkey. Recently, I have seen stories that discuss Israel’s sale of unmanned aerial vehicles to Turkey, but those are the exception rather than the rule. This story, on the other hand, is much more specific. Some of those shipments for Hezbollah were sent by sea, and Israel and Western countries have been successful in intercepting at sea hundreds of tons of missiles and artillery shells. Other shipments arrive overland or in flights to Syria
via Turkey. Al Jazeera reports: In May 2007, Turkish authorities seized weapons hidden on a Syriabound train from Iran after Kurdish separatist fighters derailed it with a bomb. According to one account, the weapons on the train included a rocket launch pad and 300 rockets. One little-publicized case in 2006 involved an aircraft loaded with C803 anti-ship missiles (one such Chinese-Iranian missile hit an Israeli
navy ship, killing four sailors). Lebanese general arrested as Israeli spy by Elder of Ziyon (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 8/5/2010 5:15:00 AM
From Ya Libnan: Hezbollah’s Al-Manar television reported on Wednesday that Brigadier General Fayez Karam, who is a senior Free Patriotic Movement official, confessed that he has been spying for Israel since 2005 and that he has met several Israeli officials during his trips to the European Union. Karam was arrested earlier on Wednesday on suspicion of collaborating with Israel according to local reports Al-Manar also said that the Internal Security Forces (ISF) are still
investigating with the detainee to better understand the extent of the damages incurred by Karam. Police arrested several suspects over the past month in an expanding probe into an alleged network of Israeli spies employed in the country’s telecom sector. The alleged spies discovered over the past month have been mainly concentrated in Lebanon’s wireless and landline telecommunications networks; as far as I know this is by far the most senior person accused of spying for Israel. (Al Manar is a Hezbollah media outlet so I am not going to assume yet that the story that he admitted being a spy is true.) A joint Egyptian – Hamas project? Maan is reporting that the Hamas terrorists who shot Grad rockets at Eilat and Aqaba on Monday had some Egyptian help. An Egyptian security source told Ma’an that the faction launched seven Grad-grade rockets toward the Red Sea resort cities of Eilat and Aqaba. Government officials said Wednesday that the explosives were loaded onto two vehicles and launched from the Egyptian town of Taba. One of the rockets, the source added, landed on the Egyptian side of the border near a building block containing security offices in Taba. Following the launch, the vehicles returned to the Egyptian side of Rafah and disappeared, the source added. So where was the Egyptian army?
