Finding Jewish Family Records in Croatia by Blog Admin (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/26/2010 7:36:00 AM

In response to an earlier post on the blog (see here), we have received requests for information on Jewish records in Croatia. For your convenience, we are reproducing the article entitled “ Finding Jewish Family Records in Croatia” from our “ InfoFile” section on the JewishGen website. Finding Jewish Family Records in Croatia By Ed Zwieback Searching for records in Croatia has been limited by the lack of activity for this area. There are Croatian genealogy websites that can be found via feefhs.org and cgi.rootsweb.com. The Mormon Family History Library (FHL) began microfilming records in Zagreb in March 1985. They have acquired over 2,500 microfilms in Croatia, including Jewish records for 15 towns. These films are listed in a recent issue of Avotaynu(Summer 1999, Vol. XV, no. 2, page 5), as well as in the Family History Library Catalog(FHLC). A good article on “ Croatian Research at the Family History Library” by Thomas K. Edlund can be found on the Feefhs.org web site. An updated and expanded version of this article, entitled “A Beginner’s Guide to Croatian Research”, by Thomas K. Edlund, can be found in the FEEFHS Quarterly, VII:1-2

(Spring/Summer 1999), pp. 7-37. Croatia has a Central State Archive, located in the capital, Zagreb. The Hrvatski Državni Arhiv(National Archives of Croatia) is the main depository of old church records for many parts of the country. Any birth and death records older than 1860 (some up to the 1880’s) were turned over to the 12 Croatian Regional (historical) Archives (DRŽAVNI ARHIV …). The recordending dates may vary from one regional archive to the next. The Regional Archives are located at: Varaždin, Zagreb, Bjelovar, Pazin, Rijeka, Karlovac, Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik, Sisak, Slavonski Brod, and Osijek. In 1945, all birth, marriage, and death records held by churches in Croatia were turned over to the civil authorities and were deposited with the City Register Offices (‘opc’ina’; MATCNI URED …). These include Jewish records. There are 400 municipalities within 21 counties (županija) in Croatia. Since Zagreb is large, there would be many such offices located within the city. Addresses of the City Register Offices for post-1900 records are difficult to locate from the Internet. Croatian records have greater linguistic diversity than for most other geographic regions. Croatian, Slovene, Serbian, German, Hungarian, Latin or Italian are possible languages used. I obtained very good results when I sent an inquiry letter (in English) to

the Regional Archive of Varazdin, asking for vital records. The Varazdin archivist has provided copies of several marriage, death, and census records for my family (1879-1930s). The Varazdin archivist also searched the City Book of Inhabitants, 1930s, and a Record of Conscription of Jews sent to concentration camps, 1941. I have used the FHL film No. 1791974, “Zagreb Jewish Births and Deaths 1858-1904, and the film is very easy to read. The Jewish Community of Zagreb may be able to help with family records. They have furnished me some very useful information. Hate Mail — From the UNRWA by Honest Reporting (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/26/2010 6:58:56 AM

Hate mail from a UNRWA email address arrived in my in-box today. I’m omitting the first half of the email address so this person doesn’t get bombarded with emails. From: A/RAHIM, Saadi . . . @unrwa.org Date: Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 10:21 AM Subject: To: action@honestreporting.com Dishonest reporting, That’s your true identity, and your true character. If you really want to be fair and honest about it, which I doubt, go back and read history with a fair and nonbiased mind. How To Find A Rabbi For Your Interfaith Wedding | about rabbi by paraisrael (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/26/2010 9:20:13 AM

by Otto Yamamoto How To Find A Rabbi For Your Interfaith Wedding Finding a Rabbi– Study after study shows that at least 50% of American Jews are marrying non-Jews. Thankfully, this has caused the liberal wings of Judaism – the Reform and Reconstructionist movements, and to some extent the Conservative movement – to become much more inclusive towards interfaith couples and families. Some rabbis now routinely and openly emphasize the importance of welcoming interfaith families. In fact, anecdotal evidence shows that many Reform and Reconstructionist synagogues are actually dismantling programs geared specifically towards interfaith couples and families, because such families are so well integrated into congregations that they no longer want or ask for programs especially for them. Most telling perhaps is the fact that members of the lay synagogue leadership frequently are intermarried themselves. There does remain one major issue, even in the more liberal movements, regarding which most congregations and rabbis remain fairly traditional, and that is officiating at an interfaith wedding. Halacha, or Jewish Law, bans interfaith marriage, and does not recognize such marriages as valid. Therefore, all Orthodox and Conservative rabbis who recognize the binding authority of Halacha refrain from officiating at interfaith weddings. Even though their movements do not always recognize the binding authority of Halacha, most Reform and Reconstructionist rabbis tend to defer to it on this issue. Some Reform and Reconstructionist rabbis will officiate at interfaith weddings, but in agreeing to do so, they may attach various conditions to their willingness to officiate. For example, they may agree to marry an interfaith couple, but they will not officiate on the Sabbath. They may refuse to co-officiate with non-Jewish clergy, or require the couple to agree to raise their children within the Jewish faith. The rabbis may also ask the couple to join their congregation, participate in courses on Judaism and/or attend pre-marital counseling sessions. Almost all rabbis who will officiate at interfaith weddings will not officiate in a church, or allow any mention of Jesus in the ceremony. For some couples, these conditions present no problems, but other couples may be less ready to agree to them, and for the latter group, it can be very difficult to find a rabbi who will marry them.

Still, there are a small number of rabbis out there who will officiate for you. Some are bona fide rabbis. But there are also individuals in the market place who call themselves rabbis and who officiate at interfaith weddings, even though they have not undergone any type of serious training, and indeed have very little knowledge. They have obtained credentials from unaccredited institutions, and usually spend very little time studying much of anything. Just as you would not want your attorney, doctor, plumber or mechanic to be someone who has earned his or her credentials on the fly, it is probably not a good idea to have an officiating rabbi who did! It is not hard to distinguish between the bona fide rabbis and those who are not. If a person’s rabbinic ordination was obtained after a rigorous course of study lasting at least five years, his or her ordination is most likely acceptable. If a person’s “ordination” followed something less rigorous – there are actual cases of people becoming “ordained” after studying for just a few weeks, or taking some type of take home test – buyer beware. Finding the Rabbi– Once you find a rabbi, you want to make sure that that rabbi is the rabbi for you. You don’t just want a rabbi who is willing to officiate; you want the right rabbi, the one who will officiate a ceremony that will leave you and your families with pleasant and wonderful lasting memories. Compromising on quality is just not an option. So what should you look for to make sure you have found the right person? The most important thing is to make sure that you find a rabbi who is truly interested in you as a couple, and makes it clear in word and action that the wedding is about you and the celebration of your love for each other. He or she should take time to get to know you, as individuals and as a couple. After all, how can a wedding ceremony be personalized to who you are, if your rabbi does not take the time to get to know you as persons? He or she should be someone who is warm, friendly, truly passionate about people; someone with a good sense of humor who does not take him or herself too seriously. This will help him or her create, with you, a ceremony that has that soughtafter blend of seriousness and lightheartedness, something that sometimes eludes officiants. The ideal rabbi is the one who will build the ceremony around you, not try to fit or “shoehorn” you into a preconceived notion of a ceremony that he or she already has. The right rabbi is someone whom you won’t hesitate to tell what you want, and with whom you feel comfortable sharing what you don’t want. He or

she should be there for you throughout the process of preparation and obviously the wedding itself, and should be just an email or a phone call away. One rabbi personally commits to couples that he will return emails or phone calls within 24 hours (unless he is officiating outside the country), since he understands that planning a wedding can be sometimes stressful, and that prompt replies can help alleviate some of the stress. Creating the Ceremony of Your Dreams with Your Rabbi– The rabbi should have a plan for the preparation and creation of your ceremony, and should be able to lay it out clearly for you. You want to feel confident that the rabbi will stay on top of things. At the same time, he or she needs to be flexible enough to adjust that plan to your needs and your schedule, while keeping the ball rolling, all the same. Ideally, this plan should consist of three or four meetings, where you and your rabbi carefully develop your ceremony. The first meeting should focus, first and foremost, on getting to know each other. It should be at that time that the rabbi lays out that clear plan for the development of the ceremony. That first meeting should involve many open-ended questions, general and specific, about what you want to see in your ceremony. It is a good sign if you answer many of these questions with, “Wow, that is a good question; we need to think about that,” because that means that you will think about it! It is really helpful if the rabbi can supply you with a summary of the meeting that highlights those items you wanted to think about. The rabbi should also suggest a book or two that can help you learn more about interfaith ceremonies, to assist you in developing your ceremony together with your rabbi. During the meetings that follow, as you work together with the rabbi, with his or her guidance, things should gradually gel and fall into place. In the final meeting you should be able to together review the entire

ceremony, with a written copy, based on your discussions, in front of you. (One rabbi tries to email a draft to couples a few weeks before the final meeting, so they can actually begin this discussion by email in advance of the final meeting.) You should feel comfortable to make any changes, additions or deletions that you feel are needed. The rabbi should also discuss technical details and pointers, so there are no surprises, and your ceremony goes smoothly and seamlessly. If you choose to have a co-officiant, you will of course want to meet with him or her as well. The rabbi should also make sure that the co-officiant is part and parcel of the ceremony planning process. (Some co-officiants have never co-officiated with a rabbi before.) You may even want to have one meeting with both co-officiants together. The Day of Your Dreams, and How Your Rabbi Can Help Make It Magical– First of all, an important technical note – it should be obvious to your rabbi that he or she should arrive about 45-60 minutes before the ceremony. This enables him or her to make sure that everything is in order. Hopefully, there are no last minute surprises, but if there are, this will give the rabbi sufficient time to deal with these. It is difficult to describe exactly what the day of your dreams will look like, since, especially if your rabbi followed the above steps, your day will look different from every other bride and groom’s day. That said, there a number of general characteristics that ideally every ceremony will include. It is important that no one be “in the dark,” and so the rabbi should organically incorporate explanations of the rituals and customs into the ceremony. That way everyone will feel comfortable. Blessings in Hebrew, especially when chanted (and then translated into English), add a unique flavor and rhythm to the ceremony. There should be, as was mentioned above, just the right mix of seriousness and lightheartedness. There should be tears of joy, and also hearty laughter. Since your rabbi spent time with you and got to know you, he or she will be able to share some personal and meaningful remarks with you and your family and friends. Obviously, almost every ceremony will include the fundamental customs associated with a wedding ceremony – readings of your choice, vows, rings and the breaking of the glass. One rabbi has a number of specific components that he loves to include, though he always reminds couples that what matters is what they like, not what he likes, as it their wedding, HOW page 3

not his. He loves chanting the traditional Seven Wedding Blessings for the bride and the groom in Hebrew, interspersed with seven English blessings of the couple’s choice, that speak to who they are as a couple. The English blessings may be recited by him, his co-officiant, if he has one, or by a family friend or friends. One of the warmest moments in almost every ceremony he officiates is the Priestly Blessing, “May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord shine his countenance upon you and be gracious unto you; may the Lord look upon you with favor and grant you peace.” Sometimes, he will wrap the couple in my prayer shawl, and chant the ancient blessings in a soulful tune, just as he imagines his great ancestor, the mythical Aaron, the brother of Moses, did, as the legendary first High Priest. Of course many people’s favorite ritual is the breaking of the glass. Let me elaborate on how one rabbi does with that ritual. He almost always begin the last part of the ceremony by mentioning that when people hear that he does weddings, they usually say to him “You (or sometimes y’all) break a glass, right?” Many times it is the only thing they know about a Jewish wedding. You would think, therefore, that we would know the reason why we break a glass. As is typical of many of the rituals of the Jewish people, there are about fifteen or twenty reasons for this ritual, which really means that none are true. He then says that following “extensive Talmudic research,” he has found the real reason – the groom breaks the glass to symbolize that this is the last time the husband will be able to put his foot down! This always elicits a hearty laugh. He then

usually follows this comment with a serious explanation, one that speaks to the couple and their hopes and dreams. The most wonderful explanation for the breaking of the glass, and one that most couples end up choosing, is that at an interfaith wedding the shattering of the glass symbolizes the breaking down of barriers between peoples of different cultures and different faiths. We look to the bride and the groom, and hope that the day will come when everyone in the whole world will learn from them, and love each other, regardless of faith and culture. It is especially important to end this way, as couples hear from enough people that there is something wrong with what they are doing. Therefore, it is very fitting to end their ceremony with a reminder to them, and to everyone, that it is actually the opposite – we should all be learning from them and their example. h t t p : / / www.interfaithweddingrabbi.net– Rabbi David Gruber has officiated more than 50 weddings for interfaith couples in the last two years, in or from more than 7 countries and 20 states. Malmo synagogue attacked by Carl in Jerusalem (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/26/2010 7:19:00 AM

Malmo synagogue attacked An explosion of firecrackers outside the Jewish synagogue in Malmo, Sweden during the night between last Thursday and Friday broke several windows in the synagogue. While the Jewish community in Malmo – which has been harassed for some time – is treating the incident as an attack or attempted attack on the synagogue, while the Swedish police are taking it less seriously (Hat Tip: Jihad Watch). While the local police claim that there was no particular threat against the synagogue prior to the explosion, readers of this blog can easily argue that there is a general threat to the Malmö Jewish community. This is perhaps also why the local police decided to classify the explosion outside Malmö Synagogue as

“vandalism” while the chairman of the Jewish community in Malmö states that the Jewish community sees the explosion as a “attack or an attempted attack” on the synagogue. As reported by the local newspaper Skånskan, since the beginning of the year there has been an increased threat against Jewish families in Malmö. The feelings of insecurity and lack of personal safety are today so strong that some Jewish families have chosen to leave the city, or even to leave Sweden. Following the public outcry by the Jewish community in Malmö and the formation of a group to foster communication among various ethnic groups in the city, Chairman of the Jewish Community Fred Kahn had reported that hopes were that the situation now looked a little brighter. Until now… … The local police force feels that it is not necessary to enforce security

around the synagogue although it is evident that the Jewish Community remains in a state of constant threat. How long the small Jewish community can persist under threat in Malmö while being forced to bear the cost of intensive security protection, and without the freedom to openly identify as Jews, is anybody’s guess. Despite Mayor Reepalu’s belief that this is the Jews’ problem, evidence shows that violence is everybody’s problem in Malmö. /Sound of crickets in the background. posted by Carl in Jerusalem @ 5:19

Lebanese "flotilla" might sail this week by Elder of Ziyon (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/26/2010 8:15:00 AM

Israel’s Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center has a brief paper that analyzes the latest on the Lebanese women’s and reporters’ ships that were supposed to have sailed a month ago. They agree with my reporting that Hezbollah is behind the ships and that the purpose of these ships may be to provoke a deadly Israeli response: 1. Yasser Qashlaq, chairman of the Free Palestine Movement and organizer of the Lebanese flotilla to the Gaza Strip, said the ships would leave within a few days. Qashlaq asked Lebanese politicians not to make difficulties, but rather to cooperate so the flotilla might succeed (DayPress news website, July 20, 2010). His previous declarations about its sailing were not realized, but nevertheless it is possible that this time the ships will set sail, despite a large number of international objections. 2. The current situation of the flotilla is as follows: A. The ship called Maryam reached Tripoli and is currently participating in the routine processes required by law before a ship set sail. Rima Farah, ship spokesperson, said that contacts had been made with a number of countries to acquire authorization for the ship to be received at their harbors, because it cannot sail directly from Lebanon to

the port of Gaza. Samar al-Hajj, coordinator for the organizing committee, is the director of the ship’s logistic activities. Note: The ship will carry only women passengers (Al-Diyar website, July 21, 2010). B. The ship called Nagi alAli(formerly Julia) is ready to set sail, and according to the organizers all that remains to be done is to load the cargo. Most of the passengers will apparently be correspondents. C. The organizers may have another ship, but they are not divulging any information about it. 3. Yasser Qashlaq said he did not rule out the possibility that Israel would try to halt the flotilla because “there is no limit to the crimes of the entity of the occupation.” He also said that there would be peace activists aboard the ships and that the cargos would include humanitarian equipment, and that any attempt to stop them would be “a terrorist action” (DayPress news website, July 20, 2010). 4. In our assessment, the ships were purchased and the flotilla organized with the involvement and support of Syria and Hezbollah, although both do not want to expose their roles and use organizations like the Free Palestine Movement as fronts for their activities. 5. Qashlaq revealed his position in an interview with Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV on June 19, 2010. He said that “the day will come when the ships [which arrive at the Gaza Strip] will take the remainder of the European garbage

which came to my country[i.e., Israel] back to their homelands, Gilad Shalit will return to Paris and they [the leaders of Israel will return to Poland. Let the murderers go home. After they return we will pursue them everywhere all over the world and try them in court for the slaughters they have carried out from Dir Yassin to this day.” 6. Considering the stated positions of Qashlaq and some of those involved in the flotilla, and especially their close ties with Syria and Hezbollah, he apparently wants a violent confrontation between the passengers and the Israeli Air Force and Navy with a lot of media coverage. His intention is to defame Israel, even if his agenda is not necessarily that of the other passengers aboard the ships. 7. More proof that this flotilla, like that of the Mavi Marmara, is meant mainly to create a media circus and incite antiIsraeli propaganda, and not to bring humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip was made public by an AlJazeera TV investigative report. 8. The Al-Jazeera TV’s Gaza Strip correspondent, revealed that the Gazans responsible for the ministry of health of the de facto Hamas administration were resentful because 70% of the medicines which arrived in the Gaza Strip from the aid convoys from various countries, especially Arab countries, could not be used. They were either unfit for use or their expiry dates had passed by months and sometimes years.

They said that one of the convoys had brought dialysis machines which could not be used. The report was also quoted by a daily paper affiliated with the de facto Hamas administration (Al-Jazeera TV, July 20, 2010). Left: Useless dialysis machines. Right: Drugs whose expiry dates have passed (Al-Jazeera TV, July 20, 2010). Israel closes River Jordan site of Christ’s baptism over pollution fears by Harriet Sherwood (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/26/2010 6:59:59 AM

Water to be tested after samples reveal high levels of raw sewage, according to health ministry and environmental groups Christian pilgrims should be banned from entering the River Jordan at the site where Jesus is believed to have been baptised because of dangerous levels of pollutants, Israel’s ministry of health has said. The site was closed to the public today to allow the river’s water to be tested following preliminary results from samples taken recently which showed high levels of raw sewage and agricultural chemicals. But the demand to close or limit access to the site is controversial because of an uncompleted $2m (£1.3m) refurbishment project aimed at attracting more pilgrims to what is the third most important Christian site in the Holy Land, after the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem’s Old City and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Around 100,000 people visit the site at Qasar al-Yahud, near Jericho, each year to be baptised in what they regard as holy water or to take away samples for baptisms at home. Access to the site is only permitted with consent from the civil administration, the Israeli body set up by military decree to govern most of

the West Bank. The baptism site straddles the border with Jordan, which runs through the middle of the river, and the Israeli side is within a closed military zone. Signs posted at the gated entrance to the site warn of pollution as well as land mines. Visitors are accompanied with an armed escort along a road bordered by barbed wire through a desert landscape to the river. Red and white tape was today barring access to the water, although visitors on the Jordanian side, a few metres across the river, were free to immerse themselves. “We invested a lot of money in this site – it is going to be open, clean and convenient for all pilgrims,” said Rafi Ben-hur of the tourism ministry. “I don’t know with what authority the site was closed. I was very upset at this initiative. “We will do everything to keep the site open. We believe it’s safe to be baptised in this water.” The pollution of the river is largely a result of raw sewage coming from Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian sources, plus agricultural run-off – largely pesticides and fertilisers – and hormone-enriched effluent from fish farms, according to Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME). “It’s a very unholy mix,” said FoEME’s Israel director, Gidon Bromberg. “In the short term, the site should close to baptisms – the water is a risk to public health.” In the longer term, Bromberg said,

the river’s water needs to be rehabilitated. Currently 98% of the water is diverted by Israel, Syria and Jordan, mainly for agricultural use, which means the pollutants are highly concentrated. FoEME is concerned that Israel’s fear of losing tourists and pilgrims to the Jordanian side of the site could lead to pressure to keep the site open despite the risks. “If the ministry of health caves in, we will take them to court,” said Bromberg. A health ministry statement said: “This is a complicated issue which requires discussions at the highest levels. Until a final decision is made, there will be no change in the directives of the ministry.” At the near-deserted site today, Torhild Tollefsen, 36, from Stavanger in Norway, persuaded officials to allow entry to her and her fiancé to collect some of the green stagnant water to baptise their as yetunconceived children. “It’s much smaller than I imagined,” she said. “We came to see the place where Jesus was baptised. It’s a special place, but the colour of the river is a bit strange. “It’s sad. This is a sacred place for me and for Christians all over the world. It’s important that the river is healthy.” The refurbishment of the site includes landscaping the area down to the river with stone and decking, wheelchair access and shaded areas to provide shelter from the blistering

sun. Among the items on sale in the newly-opened gift shop are T-shirts saying: “I was baptised in the Jordan River.” • Israel • Religion • Pollution Harriet Sherwood guardian.co.uk© Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions| More Feeds Hija del Zion para Israel Support Israel • Israel should swap land for peace, say three-quarters of British Jews Survey finds UK's Jewish community supports Israel's right to defend itself but should now help create Palestinian stateThe majority of British Jews think Israel should give up some of its land in ret... • Eyewitness: Tomb protest Photographs from the Guardian Eyewitness series... • Why Binyamin Netanyahu tape is no real shocker | Seth Freedman Netanyahu's words highlight his hostility to the peace process, but in Israeli-Palestinian politics being twofaced is not unusualA recently released tape revealing Binyamin Netanyahu's contempt for b... A Literary Treasure Trove by Rachel (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/26/2010 8:18:25 AM

Try not to freak out, but we might have some previously unreleased Kafka on our hands very soon. If you’re not excited, I’m guessing that you’ve never read any Kafka. I forgive you, but just take my word for it: this is a big deal. Photo Credit: AP Photo After his death in 1924, Franz Kafka’s personal papers and documents were left to his friend and fellow writer, Max Brod. When Brod died in 1968, ten safety deposit boxes full of papers (some his, some Kafka’s) were left to his secretary and friend, Esther Hoffe. The disputed ownership of these documents is what’s kept them hidden from the public for so long. Hoffe’s daughters seem to have legal ownership, but if the papers are deemed to be “literary treasures” by the judge who is currently examining them, then they could be released into the public

domain. Even if the judge rules in favor of the Hoffe family, chances are good that the papers will soon be published in some form. Some speculate that the boxes contain unpublished manuscripts by Kafka, considered one of the greatest writers of the 20 th century, while others hope that personal documents will shed light on his mysterious life. You can read more in Haaretz, the Israeli newspaper that filed the lawsuit to make these documents public. The New York Times also has an article on the subject, where they suggest that an unpublished short story was found in the first box. Smart Jews: Israelis won’t go back to Turkey despite lifting of warning by Carl in Jerusalem (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/26/2010 6:05:00 AM

Smart Jews: Israelis won’t go back to Turkey despite lifting of warning Despite the cancellation of a warning against Israelis traveling to Turkey, Israel’s Jewish population continues to shun the country – as it did since Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan’s tantrum in Davos. Turkey is known for offering low prices and package deals which are seemingly perfect for Israelis who wish to go on vacation without a long air flight and save some money. But despite this fact, the report brought several possible reasons for the decline in the number of Israelis vacationing in Turkey. Among the reasons cited were a sense of hostility towards Israelis on part of the Turks, both by civilians as well as by the Turkish government. Another possible reason for Israelis to avoid Turkey is the proliferaton of damaging incidents such as the hacking of Israeli websites by Turkish hackers and the theft of

passwords and credit card numbers. The cancellation of the travel warning has already prompted tourist agents in Israeli to go to Turkey, but the report in Globes said that the 2-3 weekly flights to Antalya are only test flights. Israeli tourism agents, added the report, have admitted off the record that the destination will be “dead for the coming months”. The only factor that can cause this to change would be a change in Turkey’s attitude toward Israel. That major change in Turkey’s attitude still seems far away, as relations between the two sides are still tense. Turkey continues to insist on an Israeli apology over the lethal raid on the Gaza flotilla, as well as compensation for families of the

casualties, and an independent international probe of the raid. Israel puts the blame squarely on Turkey for encouraging the flotilla. Turkey has been upgrading relationships with Iran and Syria. by Liam Wilde Palestinian official hints at accepting direct talks A Palestinian official on Sunday hinted at accepting U.S. demands to start direct peace talks with Israel. “We don’t rule out any possibility or form of negotiations,” said Yasser Abed Rabbo, a member of the Executive Committee of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Leicestershire: Increase in report abuse against Muslims by Esther (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/26/2010 6:56:00 AM

Leicestershire: Increase in report abuse against Muslims Via BBC: Muslims in Leicestershire are facing increasing abuse, according to figures from the police. Between April 2008 and March 2009, officers recorded 25 offences against Muslims but in the following 12 months, the figure rose to 42. Most incidents involved verbal abuse but there was a small number of cases in which veils were pulled off. Police said they treated all types of hate crime as a priority and urged victims to report any problems. This article was prepared by the Islam in Europe blog – islamineurope.blogspot.com (…) Rehana Sidat, from Leicester, who wears the niqab, said: “I think there are two things going on. There is more Islamophobia, people are becoming more intolerant. “But also more people are reporting this sort of thing, having more confidence to bring it to the police.” ( more) Hija del Zion para Israel Support Israel • Cardiff: WDL demo, taxi driver strike Cardiff: WDL demo, taxi driver strikeTwo men and a woman have been arrested in rival demonstrations held in Cardiff. Palestine Today reports that a new plan will be put into place to collect overdue electric bills from the tens of thousands of PA employees in Gaza. The plan, announced today, involves garnishing up to 25% of Gaza employees monthly wages. As we have mentioned before, Gaza’s power plant suffers from a shortage of fuel – but not because of any Israeli policy that limits fuel distribution, but rather because they aren’t paying for it. This new policy will attempt to make a dent in the huge debt that the electric company is under – some 5.2 billion shekels ($1.3 billion.) Hija del Zion para Israel Support Israel

Why do you celebrate your birthday? In your mother’s womb, you were comfortable, warm and cared for. Then, you left. It was an ordeal, a trauma. The world you entered was cold and harsh. The mere act of living became a struggle. You cried. Yet, every year you celebrate that day. Because the day you were born was the day you became your own entity. No longer an extension of someone else. A proactive force in the world. So, celebrate your birthday. And take time to think: What have I given the world that was not given to me? Was I really born?
