Indonesian gov’t looks the other way from jihadist thugs: "Being popular is more important to them than punishing those who are clearly breaking the law" by Marisol (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/5/2010 12:05:06 AM
Indonesian gov’t looks the other way from jihadist thugs: “Being popular is more important to them than punishing those who are clearly breaking the law” Nothing to see here… In its own way, Indonesia increasingly appears to be involved in a double game not unlike that of Pakistan. More on this story. “Indonesian Islamists open front against Christians,” by Niniek Karimi for the Associated Press, July 4: BEKASI, Indonesia — Days after rumors spread across this industrial city that Christians were conducting a mass baptism, hard-line Islamic leaders called for local mosques to create a youth guard to act as moral police and put a quick stop to forced conversions. They started training early Saturday morning, around 100 young men turning out in a field in Bekasi wearing martial arts uniforms. Leaders stressed that there was no plan to arm them, but they do not shy away from saying they’ll act essentially as thugs. “We’re doing this because we want to strike fear in the hearts of Christians who behave in such a way,” said Murhali Barda, who heads the local chapter of the Islamic Defenders Front, which pushes for the implementation of Islamic-based laws in Bekasi and other parts of the archipelagic nation. “If they refuse to stop what they’re doing, we’re ready to fight.” [...] Though big, vice-filled cities, like Jakarta, traditionally have been easy targets, changing demographics have put areas like Bekasi, on the outskirts of the capital, in the hard-liners’ cross hairs. The shift reflects a greater problem in Indonesia, which is struggling to stamp out extremist movements without losing the support of moderates, who condemn violence but are sensitive to perceptions that the government is subservient to the West. Outsiders have steadily poured into the Jakarta suburb in search of work,
bringing with them their own religions, traditions and values. That has made conservative Islamic clerics nervous. Some have used sermons to warn their flock to be on the lookout for signs of proselytization. The front, known for smashing bars, attacking transvestites and going after minority sects with bamboo clubs and stones, is now leading a charge against Christians in the area. A spate of attacks has rocked Bekasi: Mobs have forced shut two churches this year. Last month, a statue of three women was torn down by authorities after hundreds of hardliners wearing skull caps and white robes took to the streets, claiming the monument symbolized the Holy Trinity.
Weeks earlier, black-clad youths attacked a Catholic-run school over an anonymous blogger’s “blasphemous” website. In this context, it wasn’t surprising that when 14 busloads of villagers arrived last week at the Bekasi home of Henry Sutanto, who heads the Christian-run Mahanaim Foundation, rumors quickly spread that he and one of his colleagues, Andreas Sanau, were planning a mass baptism. A spokeswoman for the group, Marya Irawan, insisted the crowds were invited as part of efforts to reach out to the poor. [...] Meanwhile, back at Thug-Central: A regional leader of the Indonesian Muslim Forum, Bernard Abdul Jabbar, said the young men were
given physical training and taught about Islam. “They will guard the Islamic faith and preach the right path to the people,” he said. But if Christians don’t want to listen, Barda warned, “we are ready to fight.” Christian groups said the youths will only create fear, nervousness and unrest in the nation. “The government must protect all citizens from anarchist action as mandated by the constitution,” said Priest Andreas Yewangoe, a chairman of the Communion of Indonesian Churches. But the government so far is keeping mum. Though all these events occurred less than nine miles (15 kilometers) from Indonesia’s bustling capital, making headlines in local papers and dominating chats on social networking sites such as Facebook, they’ve sparked little public debate in the halls of power. That Dangerous Idea of Liberty by Daniel Greenfield @ the Sultan Knish blog (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/4/2010 8:26:00 PM
This Fourth of July marks the 234th anniversary of one the most dangerous ideas ever unleashed on the world. That people do not belong to governments, but governments belong to people. This was not an altogether new idea. History was filled with all sorts of theorizing and debating over the grounds on which a king might be overthrown. But the process that began with the Declaration of Independence did not merely set out to replace one set of chains, with a nicer set, but to overturn the top down rule of government, and replace it with a system in which people choose and replace their governments at will. That sort of liberty is of course a dangerous idea. In most places revolutions mean that one gang is thrown out, and another gang marches in, and the mobs in the street are given a choice between going along or being on the wrong side of the guns. If the current Iranian revolution ever happens, that is exactly what it will end up looking like. It is what revolutions across the world and across time have looked like. The phenomenon best described by George Orwell in the conclusion to Animal Farm, as the pigs who led the revolution become indistinguishable from their former human masters. America being the work of human beings, rather than angels, it is impossible to say that this sort of thing did not occur at all. The treatment of many veterans of the Continental Army was a particularly shameful chapter in American history. But in the bigger picture, the Constitution did what no form of government had ever done, shift the balance of power toward the people. The Constitution equipped with the Bill of Rights was not just another chain for the people, instead it was meant to be a leash on government. Today we do not need to refer to other countries and other eras to understand how important that was, because we ourselves are living in a time in which government has begun to pile on the chains, and the leash doesn’t work too well anymore. The late 19th and 20th centuries embraced progressive government and rejected popular rule. Both Republicans and Democrats reintroduced the iron law of elitism, that stands behind all tyranny, the idea that the welfare of the people is best served by the unquestioning rule of a small better qualified class, and that the people can serve their own interests by cooperating in the reforms being implemented for their benefit. We still pay lip service to the Constitution. Just as every Supreme
Court Justice who steps all over the Constitution, makes sure to reference some random line to pin their judicial activism on, and every Congressman and President wraps himself in the Preamble of the Declaration in order to propose laws that utterly pervert its intent. The Constitution and the Declaration have become symbols, rather than realities. They have ceased to be walls, and become bridges that can lead a politician absolutely anywhere. Do you want to force every American to buy health insurance or pay a fine? Just mention that famous preamble, “All men are created equal”, in order to argue that the government should be able to compel all men to buy a service of its choosing, in order to make them properly equal in their inability to obtain decent medical services. That is what happens when laws become ideas of laws, and ideas become trimmed into aborted phrases that are nothing more than words of poetry. With time any principle can be turned into poetry, and then into a metaphor that turns out to mean the exact opposite of the original principle. That is all the more true of the dangerous principle of liberty, which is dangerous because it inhibits the rulers, while liberating the ruled. Governments wield the tools of power. Democracy turns access to those tools into a competition, but devalues the tools themselves. Which means that the political elites who compete for those tools will inevitably find a way to rewrite laws in a way that empowers the tools of government. That is what happened to us. The great fundamental issue now before the Republican party and before our people can be stated briefly. It is: Are the American people fit to govern themselves, to rule themselves, to control themselves? I believe they are. My opponents do not. I believe in the right of the people to rule. I believe the majority of the plain people of the United States will, day in and day out, make fewer mistakes in governing themselves than any smaller class or body of men, no matter what their training, will make
in trying to govern them. I believe, again, that the American people are, as a whole, capable of self control and of learning by their mistakes. Our opponents pay lip loyalty to this doctrine; but they show their real beliefs by the way in which they champion every device to make the nominal rule of the people a sham. Theodore Roosevelt So spoke the man who had been the 26th President of the United States, 98 years ago as he was trying to recapture an office against Taft, the candidate of his own party. Roosevelt would not succeed. What he proposed in his speech at Carnegie Hall was to reclaim popular rule through direct primaries, referendums, recalls and using popular will to outweigh the judiciary. But anyone tempted to cheer old TR might also want to think twice, because the debate was no longer over individual freedom, but over whether the government should protect the people against business interests, or protect business interests against the people. That ugly split in which government excels at playing different elements of the country against each other, for its own benefit was already here. The current ObamaCare framing that supposedly pitted the “people” against the “corporations” was the product of that same political perversity which promises protection to different sides, while feeding off all of them at once. The fundamental Progressive mistake was to believe that rule of the people meant empowering government, rather than disempowering government. TR championed populism as a check against monopolies and trusts hijacking government. But all that did was turn government into the center of power, with the ultimate monopoly on power. And given a monopoly on power, government can then rewrite the rules to benefit itself. Much like the case of the squabbling heirs who take their quarrel over the family fortune to court, only to have the court claim it all for itself– the battle to control government, allows politicians to rule through the ancient principle of divide and conquer. And that is where we are at now. We
have been thoroughly divided and conquered. We scramble back and forth searching for politicians who might save us from themselves. The problem in that sort of thinking is readily apparent. We invest power into politicians, so that they might stop oppressing us. Which is a lot like giving money to a bully, so that he’ll stop demanding money from us. It never works. There are the occasional principled politicians, but even they tend to view government as the solution– as Theodore Roosevelt did. Politicians naturally believe that the solution to problems lies within government, because that is their purview. Given power, they will try to make government do the right thing. Which just perpetuates the cycle. The Constitution was meant to break the cycle by shifting power from governments to the people. But like a mudball rolling down a hill, governments pick up power as they go along. And eventually the power shifts. That is why Jefferson suggested a revolution every 20 years, even an utterly misguided one, would be a healthy thing for maintaining liberty. Because it checks the tendencies of government to become safely established in its powers. Two-Hundred and Thirty Four years ago, the established rulers, the loyalists and the colonial governments, saw the Sons of Liberty and the other patriots, much as the Democrats see the Tea Party movement today, dangerous mobs of ignorant rabble who have to be brought into line. That is how governments always see people who begin insisting on their liberties. Because the ultimate privilege of government is power, and exercising that privilege requires the compliance of the people. A government that insists on exercising power and a people that insist on exercising their liberties will always be at odds with one another. The Declaration of Independence began a process not merely of the political independence of one geographical entity from another, the American Colonies from England, but of the political independence of the people from governments, both through their ability to change governments, and their rights that exist independent of the will of governments. In the 20th century, we have had government after government try to stuff the American Revolution back in its sack. And in the 21st century, that process has been drastically accelerated. Today we are living in the twilight of American democracy. The Democratic party has used immigration and racial politics as a tool to create its own constituencies. It maintains gerrymandered districts purely designed to elect candidates of THAT page 3

Home Front: Gas mask distribution a failure by Carl in Jerusalem (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/5/2010 1:34:00 AM
Home Front: Gas mask distribution a failure I’ve mentioned before that we were fortunate that Mrs. Carl happened to get gas masks for our family at the place where she has to go for work from time to time, but that my sense was that most people were not geting their gas masks. I also mentioned that the IDF wanted to start charging for the gas masks. The latest news is that the gas mask distribution has officially been declared a failure by the IDF Home Front Command. At most, they will distribute enough gas masks for 70% of the population, and they are telling everyone else to go fend for themselves. Golan encouraged citizens with gas masks to go out and by their own. “Sometimes it falls upon the citizen [to protect themselves] and not the state,” he said. In the meantime, the IDF Home Front Command has prioritized distribution of the masks to first responders and service providers who will have to provide assistance to others hurt during any future attack. The Jerusalem Post learned last month that the IDF Home Front Command was working on a plan to develop a special siren for nonconventional missiles that would sound in the event of a chemical or
biological attack. The possibility of using two different sirens during a future conflict – one for conventional missiles and the other for missiles carrying nonconventional warheads – came up during the nationwide civil defense exercise that was held in May called Turning Point 4. In theory, I don’t have a problem with paying. There are two issues: First, are there going to be enough gas masks available in a timely manner at any price (Golan implies that the problem is budgetary but is that the case?). Second, what happens to families like many of my neighbors who have eight, nine and ten kids (and more) and no money to pay? Maybe the government should be handing out gas masks for free on a needs basis, and require payment from those who can afford it. NIS 220 times ten or twelve is a lot of money for a family whose monthly income is less than NIS 10,000. Arutz Sheva adds: Golan said that the Home Front Command is working on another plan, which will rely on the local authorities to operate public emergency centers in protected spaces. These spaces would also serve as refuges for people whose homes were hit by missiles. However, Brigadier General Ze’ev Tzuk-Ram, Head of the National Emergency Authority, said that local authority chiefs do not have the means to take care of the safety of
their residents either. “There is some sort of disconnect. We have the central government in Jerusalem, there are the districts and the local authority and there is no clear continuity of responsibility from the government to the local authority.” Tzuk-Ram also blamed the general Israeli mentality for the lack of readiness. People tend to trust that things will work out, rather than actually prepare their families for emergency scenarios, he explained. Ashkelon Mayor Benny Vaknin said that some schools and kindergartens in Ashkelon still have no fortification against attack. “There have not been massive attacks or missile barrages on Ashkelon,” he said. “If we had to operate at several centers (…) simultaneously we would not be able to handle it. We do not have the means.” The fire brigade, too, he said, is in “catastrophic” shape. That’s really not good. Hezbullah
and hamas have tens of thousands of rockets, and the likelihood that we will see a massive bombardment, especially in the early stages of a war – God forbid – are quite high. Unfortunately, the way this country works, it is far more likely that we’re already seeing the groundwork for the next post-war Commission of Inquiry (into the Home Front Command’s activities) than it is that we are seeing a problem being raised that is going to be resolved. posted by Carl in Jerusalem @ 11:34 AM Hija del Zion para Israel Support Israel • 14K Two Tone Gold Mezuzah Shin Pendant Product DescriptionThis is a beautiful new 14 karat yellow and white gold Mezuzah with Shin charm. a single race. It is now moving to consolidate its grip on power by invalidating the entire idea of “One Man, One Vote” as a tool of racist privilege. The next step will be either an end to regional representation, saddling us with a system in which our only remaining ability is to vote for one party list or another, or voting by racial representation in which voting totals are figured into an overall census oriented breakdown by regional area, or nationwide, and in which votes count only in racial proportion, and not numerically. Either system will further devalue the voter, and enhance the power of governments to play Divide and Conquer games with their subjects. But that “Dangerous Idea of Liberty” is still around. It is not an idea that politicians would like us to think about very much. They want us to watch fireworks, enjoy our bbq’s and look at all the pretty colors. To drive out to the lake, go swimming, and cheer when the politician of the
moment speaks. To celebrate, but not to think about what exactly it is we are celebrating. For too long we have confused lifestyle with liberty, and that too serves the interests of a system which asks us to exchange liberty for lifestyle, which promises to feed, clothe and care for us– if we only give up on that dangerous idea of liberty. The best way to commemorate the Fourth of July is to do exactly what they don’t want us to do. To think. To reread the original Declaration and the Constitution. To familiarize ourselves with what has happened since then. And to recognize that liberty will never come from politicians, only from ourselves. Government cannot give the people freedom, as it is a tool whose use diminishes freedom. Liberty can only come from men and women who choose to be free. U.K.: Most jihadists are "British-born, under the age of 30, educated and likely to be employed" by Marisol (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/5/2010 1:02:42 AM
U.K.: Most jihadists are “Britishborn, under the age of 30, educated and likely to be employed” Another blow for the “poverty-causes-jihadistterrorism” theory. Quite to the contrary, this study demonstrates that, even with all the advantages of one of the most prosperous and highly developed nations on the planet, Muslims born in the U.K. still find a reason to wage jihad. So, there must be something else than poverty and lack of opportunity. Something else, something else… Come on, think. Ooh! Cloudy weather! Whew, that was close. “Most Islamist terrorists in UK are born here,” by Jerome Taylor for The Independent, July 5: The majority of Islamist terrorists in the UK are British-born, under the age of 30, educated and likely to be employed, according to a statistical analysis of all terror plots uncovered over the past ten years. The Centre for Social Cohesion has spent two years compiling a database of individuals convicted of Islamistinspired terrorism offences over the
past decade. The report, released today, comes as Britain prepares to mark the fifth anniversary of the July 7, 2005 bombings, the most deadly terrorist attack on UK soil. Despite the ongoing threat posed by terrorism, there is still no government database listing basic information on convictions in the UK. Researchers at the Centre for Social Cohesion had to dig up court and press reports to compile the database, which reveals that between 1999 and 2009, 119 individuals – British and foreign nationals – were convicted of “Islamism inspired terrorism offences”. The Government’s lack of data on such offences was heavily criticised last year by the Intelligence and Security Committee inquiry into the 7/7 London bombings. “This is basic information that should have been being analysed to assess how well aspects of the [anti-terror] strategy were working and what changes needed to be made – particularly in terms of legislation,” the committee said. The Centre for Social Cohesion, a Westminster-based think tank with just six staff members, began working on the list two years ago and went on to compile the most comprehensive
database of such convictions in the public domain. Houriya Ahmed, one of the report’s authors, said yesterday: “The information in this report has not been made publicly available by the Government, if it exists at all. We hope that the trends we discovered help focus the Government’s counter-terrorism efforts and this should be acted upon by the relevant authorities.” The Centre’s researchers discovered 127 individual convictions for terror offences, which includes three of the 119 who were convicted twice of an offence, the four July 7 suicide bombers and Kafeel Ahmed, who killed himself during the unsuccessful bombing of Glasgow airport. The average age of perpetrators was 27, with the youngest 16 and the oldest 48. Only five women have been convicted of terror-related offences – for assisting offenders or for possessing illegal documents. A third (32 per cent) of those convicted had direct links to a proscribed organisation, with the two most prevalent being the recently banned al -Muhajiroun (15 per cent) and al Qa’ida (14.5 per cent). Almost half (48 per cent) of those convicted lived in the London area. Birmingham and West Yorkshire have the second- and
third-highest numbers of convictions. More than two thirds (69 per cent) of those convicted were born in the UK and held British passports. The university’s President told the students to grow up claimed that the gowns did not come from Israel; only the plastic bags in which they came were made in Israel. Meanwhile, the President of the University Dr. Suleiman Arabiyat downplayed the issue by explaining to the students that the exporting company in El Hassan Industrial City in Irbid, which manufactured the graduation robes, “probably forgot to remove the label before exporting the products to Israel from its factories in the Industrial City.” Arabiyat told ‘Ammon News’ that ‘Tayaseer Clothing Co.’, a Jordanian company manufacturing Jordanian products, was contracted by the university to manufacture the robes on February 19th of this year and the products were delivered on March 25th. Arabiyat added that the university administration is checking the graduation gowns’ inventory to verify whether a ‘Made in Israel’ label is actually attached to the robes. The university president noted that he called El Hassan Industrial City to look into the issue.
On his part, Ismail Duweikat, Director General of Irbid Industrial Chamber, said that Tayaseer Clothing Co. is a Jordanian company and that the graduation caps and gowns “cannot be Israeli products considering the price,” explaining that the price of each gown costs JD 5.39, whereas they would cost an average of $50 if they were Israelimade. Duweikat added that a mistake could have occurred during packaging, and that the plastic bag covers may be Israeli-made, “but this does not indicate that the product is made in Israel. The Anti-Normalization Committee is following-up on the student claims. The results of the committee inquiry will be published on ‘Ammon News’ once concluded. B’Tselem: One-Fifth of West Bank Settlement Buildings on Privately-Owned Palestinian Land by Richard Silverstein (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/5/2010 12:29:18 AM
Aerial map of Ariel shows 35% is on Palestinian land (map credit: Peace Now) B’Tselem will be releasing a study on Tuesday (perhaps timing it to coincide with Bibi’s meeting with Obama the same day) revealing that fully one-fifth of the built landscape in the settlements sits on privately owned Palestinian land. The territory claimed by settlements occupies fully 42% of the entire West Bank. The group makes this finding based on Israeli government documents from the civilian and military administrations. Here is a translation of the press release accompanying the report: B’Tselem publishes today a report, By All Means Possible, which analyzes the methods by which Israel controls the land in the West Bank for the sake of the settlements. The report relies on official government documents, among them maps by the military and civil administration, and reports of the State Controller…
From this official documentation arises the fact that although the buildings in the settlements occupy only 1% of the West Bank, the claimed boundaries of the settlements incorporate 42% of the total land mass. The settlement enterprise is characterized fundamentally by a cynical and even criminal exploitation of the principles of international law, local tradition, military and civilian orders, all this in order to maximize control over the greatest amount of land to the greatest extent possible. Israel has insisted for years that it builds settlements solely on state lands and not on private Palestinian land. However, an overlay that compares these government maps with 2009 aerial photographs of the settlements shows that 21% of them are built on land which is recognized by the State as being in private Palestinian hands. What this report makes crystal clear is that it would be exceedingly easy for Israel to return much of the territory of the West Bank to Palestinian control. Only 1% of it actually contains homes and infrastructure that form the basis of
the settlements. The rest is unbuilt, but of course annexed to settlements for possible future expansion. So the next time you hear a settler supporter bellyache about the trauma and dissension that would wrack Israeli society if it withdrew from the settlements, just remember that statistic: 1%. When Pres. Obama jawbones Bibi to renew the settlement freeze beyond September perhaps he can use these figures to bolster his argument. Random thoughts from Victor Davis Hanson Victor Davis Hanson has some random thoughts that will make you go “ Hmmm.” Among them is the following. 7. The new neutrality: From what administration officials have said, we can assume now that if Argentina invades the Falklands again, we will be neutral; in the next Israel response to Lebanon or Gaza, we will be neutral; in any Israeli preemptive raid on the Iranian nuclear facility, we will be neutral; if Turkey readjusts things in the Aegean or on Cyprus, we will be neutral; if Russia moves on Georgia or any of the former republics, we will be neutral; if Venezuela goes into Colombia, we will be neutral; if Pakistan provokes India again, we will be neutral; if China moves on Taiwan, we will be neutral. If only. This administration is more likely to take the side of Argentina, Lebanon, Gaza, Turkey, Russia, Venezuela, Pakistan or China, as the case may be. Septet maintains power to extend freeze by Carl in Jerusalem (Hija del Zion para Israel - Daughter of Zion for Israel) Submitted at 7/5/2010 12:28:00 AM
Septet maintains power to extend freeze The Ministerial Legislation Committee handed Prime Minister Netanyahu a victory on Sunday when it voted 8-5 not to grant the full Knesset a veto over the possibility of extending the ’settlement freeze.’ The result means that the power to extend the freeze will remain in the hands of the ’septet’ – Netanyahu, Ehud Barak, Avigdor Lieberman, Benny Begin, Moshe (Boogie) Yaalon, Eli Yishai and Dan Meridor (pictured). Knesset veto power over future settlement building freeze in the West Bank on Sunday afternoon. Eight ministers from Likud and Labor opposed the proposal, including Ya’akov Neeman, Yitzhak Herzog, Benny Begin, Gideon Sa’ar, Dan Meridor, Michael Eitan, Shalom Simhon and Yossi Peled. Yuli Edelstein and Gilad Erdan from
Likud, Ya’akov Margi and Meshulam Nahari from Shas and Daniel Hershkowitz from Habayt Hayehudi voted in favor of the proposal. The bill would have drastically limited Netanyahu’s power over settlement growth, requiring Knesset approval for future settlement construction. I think the Post misinterpreted that last sentence. It’s not Netanyahu’s power over ’settlement’ growth that the bill’s proponents wanted to stop – they wanted to end Ehud Barak’s
power as Defense Minister to block ’settlement’ growth. posted by Carl in Jerusalem @ 10:28 AM Hija del Zion para Israel Support Israel • Prime Minister of Spain Visits Yad Vashem The Prime Minister of Spain,Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, visited Yad Vashem earlier today, touring the Holocaust History Musuem and taking part in a moving memorial ceremony in the Hall of Names.
