IS TRUMP IMPOSING FASCISM ON AMERICA? YES! Absolutely! Especially if the U.S. Congress does not begin to legislate in a bipartisan manner which ensures debate, negotiation, and compromise. Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR Will American Democracy end up practicing fascism under this Trump Administration? A review of history brings up the 'fascist leadership' of Italy's Il Duce, Benito Mussolini, then an ally of Nazi Germany's Hitler during WW II which ended during 1945. The Allied Forces led by CIC General Dwight Eisenhower defeated the Axis Nations (Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Imperial Japan). Today there are movies which relate epic events such as the successful Dunkirk evacuation of 400,000 British troops who had been overwhelmed by Nazi panzer blitzkrieg strategies. Fortunately, Allied forces subdued Germany, Italy and Japan... because if the outcome were different, today the entire world could have been under a totalitarian governance such as fascism. Fascism is a system of government marked by centralization under an authoritarian dictator (having) a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, (encouraging) violent suppression of the opposition, (which) typically (practices) a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism (Source: Wikipedia). Think about this group of traits. Then recall and categorize the actions what Donald J. Trump has done using executive orders and continues to do with the help of his cabinet and White House staff. Is it possible for this American Democracy to become a 'fascist democracy'?
Recall Trump's disparaging remarks about Mexicans being criminals, rapists, and violent drug addicts. “Mexico 'deports' to America its worst, not its best,” declared Trump. That is why Trump proposed building a wall “paid for by Mexico” along their mutual border. Recall Trump's locker room bragging why he gets away with 'nonconsensual' groping of women's private body parts? Think of his privileged life where he was a successful draft dodger who never experienced any military service. He now is the civilian Commander-in-Chief (CIC) of American military forces. As President, Mr. Trump is also this nation's Chief Executive Officer (CEO). During his presidential campaign, recall the times he disparaged, insulted, and abused individuals who disagree with him or question his false statements. As a candidate, Mr. Trump made up his 'alternative facts'. When challenged, he practices retribution, bullying tactics, many of which are diversions. Has Trump ever apologized? During rallies Trump used inflammatory language which was abusive; which projected his white supremacy beliefs. He tolerated no verbal questioning by members of the Press...which he undermined with his commentary. Recall 'all that false news?' Trump's behavior has been copied by other authoritarian leaders (e.g., Venezuela; The Philippines). Recall his first displays of 'power and authority' was to Reject America's leadership role in the
Paris Accord (voluntarily agreed to by 195 nations) whose objective was to deal with Climate Changes/ Global Warming trends which are acknowledged and accepted by climate scientists. Mr. Trump also rejected the Transpacific Trade Pact which the Obama Administration and 11 other Pacific Rim nations had crafted. “The NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) will be re-negotiated. I can get America a better deal,” declared Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump dealt with North Korea in a very belligerent manner using his Tweets which often required White House Staff attempts to patch things up. “His RED BUTTON was bigger than North Korea's button...and works too!” This 45th President, his cabinet, and the Republican majority control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress has been a wrecking ball which passed a new IRS tax code which gave 83% of the tax breaks to corporations and the 0.1% wealthy. This nation's corporations are doing so well that the S&P Stock index is now above 24,000 and employment is high (unemployment is below 4.5%). Capitalistic imperialism is evident; so is the practice of keeping foreign and domestic plans 'close to his chest'. When one reporter asked about the TPP pact, Mr. Trump's answer was “you figure it out”. HIs mannerisms are very much authoritarian and self- serving as evidenced by the nepotism being practiced. No personal wealth information has been made available to the American Public, so it is impossible to determine if Mr. Trump meets the emoluments criteria of the U.S. Constitution...but then, Mr. Trump is used to making his own rules, which often never have
been reviewed by White House staff. Our nation is experiencing an oligarchic authoritarian governance being applied and practiced. The ideological objectives of this Republican Trump Administration are to eliminate 4 regulations for each new one put 'in the books'. This is being done to eventually have a small federal government which is not able to perform, monitor, regulate, nor deliver services. Recall having all federal agencies except the Department of Defense (The Pentagon) were required to reduce operational budgets by at least 25%. A goal is to reduce entitlements in Social Security Administration; Health and Human Services (Medicare & Medicaid), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupation, Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), reduction of national monuments and parks to allow for mining and oil drilling (especially along coastal waters). Racism tendencies are indicated when Mr. Trump stated that he preferred immigrants from Norway rather than from Haiti or Africa. He had already insulted Mexicans along with all other people of color. It seems Mr. Trump often does not know what he wants nor how to go about 'getting it done' using existing administrative organization structures. He demands loyalty to him as The President rather than patriotic loyalty to America. Have you noticed that he never has anything good to say about any institution? His abrasive comments have been directed towards the Supreme Court; Department of Justice; FBI; U.S. Congress leaders; etc. So, these traits we have expe-
rienced are similar to those of Fascist leader (Benito Mussolini, Dictator of Italy), which include a belligerent style; authoritarian; abusive; controlling; secretive (especially about Russia), racism, and capitalism, and more. Trump may have initiated a TRADE WAR by placement of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports which may impact 150,000 jobs and impose $3 billion increase on vehicle purchases. All done without prior staff analysis nor input. It is all there! Is there any wonder why Democratic Party leaders want to regain control of both chambers of Congress during this 2018 Midterm election year? THE REJECTION OF FASCISM IS A NO-BRAINER. This will only happen when 'We, The People' plan to vote during the coming June 5th and November 6th Midterm Elections. 'We, The People' have the final say if and when enough of us VOTE. These 2018 Midterm elections need all your votes to thwart Mr. Trump's imposition of fascism on America's society and its economy. Recent CNN (reports), “This may be the most serious thing Donald Trump has said as President. What did he say? Oh, just a casual comment about turning the U.S. Presidency into a dictatorship! And NEWSWEEK: President Trump tells Republican donors “China's President for Life is a good idea that could happen in U.S. someday”. [Finally] Republican Joe Scarborough said, “When Republicans ignore the fact that this man is talking about being “President for Life”, if they think Donald Trump is joking, then they are fools.” (Source: Pledge to Resist; (via RedtoBlue.org) Email, dated 03.05.2018 6:16 PM).
Q&A: “LOVE NEVER DIES”
We hear from Yesy Garcia, who is part of the sequel to “The Phantom of the Opera” Production that’s what I wanted to do, musical theater. I would always take acting lessons and singing lessons on the side as well as going to school which is great because I was in New York City, the best place to be for that. Now I’m here, which is a dream. Is this your first Broadway show? This is my first big Broadway tour, yes. Right out of school I worked on a cruise ship, I did “Mamma Mia!”, and then I did “In The Heights” in Houston for a little bit. It landed me in “Love Never Dies”, which is incredible to be a part of. It’s the first time it’s touring America so it’s kind of a big deal and I’m very honored to be a part of it. Yesy Garcia is part of the cast of “Love Never Dies”. Photo Credit: Broadway San Jose
Arturo Hilario El Observador
Yesy Garcia is part of the cast of the upcoming US Broadway touring production of “Love Never Dies”, the sequel to the iconic “The Phantom of the Opera”. The tour will make a stop in San Jose from March 13-18 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Garcia got her start as a child dancer on a popular Latino variety show and continued to follow her love of dancing and the arts into adulthood. In “Love Never Dies”, she wears multiple hats (and costumes) as a part of the ensemble, as well as understudying the character of Fleck. In the following Q&A get to know Garcia and her thoughts on working on this compelling sequel to a story of a masked man in love with a chorus girl named Christine Daaé, and all that comes from the drama and emotion of it all. Hello Yesy. To start off, could you share a bit about how you ended up becoming a Broadway performer? My parents are from Cuba and I originally started performing in the show “Sabado Gigante”. I was in a kid’s segment with Don Francisco and I was like 4 years old. I grew up doing that and stopped for a little while in high school, but I always kept dancing and involved with the arts. Then I moved to New York to pursue musical theater. I went to school at Pace University where I studied dance actually, not musical theater. But I always knew that
the show, it’s great and very fun. Is there any aspect of the production that is your favorite, whether on or off stage? My favorite part of the show, it doesn’t really have to do with the show itself but at the end of the show, the ending, I definitely can’t give away the ending but it is so special that there’s always a pause from the audience after the show and it’s just this moment of silence and then all of a sudden everyone starts clapping and going crazy and it’s a beautiful thing that they are just still so immersed and involved with the show. When I’ve seen the show, I feel like I’m a part of it, and I think that’s what the audience feels as well. At the end of it they’re like, “Oh my god, it’s over?”, and that’s a beautiful moment for me, waiting in the wings to go and bow.
MARCH 9 - 15, 2018 Lastly, why should audiences come and check out “Love Never Dies” when it comes to San Jose? Like I said before, the show stands on its own, you can just show up and you’re definitely going to go for a ride. It’s a rollercoaster, you will laugh, you will cry, you will experience emotions like the characters. It’s a very special show and visually, the costumes and the set, is just stunning. Sometimes you’re just watching and wondering how is that even happening, how is it even possible [because] there’s so much going on. They will not leave disappointed. “Love Never Dies” will be at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts during March 13 - 18, 2018. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com and broadwaysanjose. com.
I was curious what you thought about Frank Lloyd Webber's comments on whether “Love Never Dies” is or isn’t a sequel. What are your thoughts on that? The show is continuing the story and it has the same characters as the “Phantom of the Opera”, there’s Meg, Madame Giry, Raoul, the Phantom and of course Christine. But I mean the show stands alone, you don’t need to watch the first one to know what’s going on in our show. It’s a huge spectacle. Some people say that is surpasses “Phantom of the Opera” aesthetically because of the set, costumes and lights. It’s an incredible experience to watch. What is happening in the story within “Love Never Dies”? It's continuing the love that Phantom has for Christine. It takes place ten years after “Phantom of the Opera” and it shifts to where the Phantom is at and how his eternal love for Christine is still there, and that will never go away. Meg has now left with Phantom to Coney Island where the show takes place to start this new show, Phantasma, Meg is the leading star in his show. Christine comes over and the whole drama starts, I don’t want to give too much away but that’s the gist of it, the undying love for Christine.

Could you describe your role(s) within this production? I’m part of the ensemble and I understudy one of the roles, Fleck, but as an ensemble member it means I get to do a lot of different characters in the show. I start off as an aerialist and then the next scene I’m a showgirl, then I’ll be a wealthy passenger or creatures in the Phantom’s lair. The first 20 minutes of the show are crazy backstage with all these quick changes. In under a minute, I have to change and be someone else in the next scene. It’s a lot of different characters that I get to play with throughout

HOW TO TEACH KIDS TO BE SAVVY CONSUMERS by providing them with an allowance. This will teach them about money management. Encourage them to save a certain amount every month and talk about the difference between needs and wants. When their savings allow them to buy a special treat at the end of the year, the lesson will be learned. Although it’s tempting to set limits around purchasing, setting too many limits will hinder a child’s understanding of money management. Learning through trial and error is key. Allowing kids to have purchasing power can teach them the value of money, and may help them take better care of their possessions.

Rebecca Harpster Golden Gate Better Business Bureau I learned a lot of useful information in school, but one thing that I missed out on was financial education. Very few children learn about budgeting, savings, and how to be a smart consumer in class, leaving the job to parents and other adults. How do you teach children what is and isn’t an advertisement, how to decide what to spend money on, and the importance of
putting away funds in a piggy bank? The mission of Better Business Bureau (BBB) is to be the leader in advancing marketplace trust, and part of that involves helping people be smart, educated consumers. Learning these skills when young is a great way to make sure they stick! The following tips from your BBB will help children become successful participants in the marketplace: • Give an allowance. The best way to become a smart consumer is through practice! One way to help children learn is
• Talk about ads. It can be very difficult for children to understand what is, and isn’t, an advertisement. These days, ads are embedded in to apps and games, and their favorite video bloggers are being paid to promote certain products (and aren’t disclosing it). Although the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) works to protect children from “unfair and deceptive marketing practices", bad actors slip through the cracks, and kids need help. When you’re with a child and see an advertisement, talk to them about the ad and help them think critically about it. What is it selling? How is it being sold? How does it make you feel? This will help them recognize ads and lessen their effect. It’s also smart to teach kids to look out for deceptive advertising techniques.
BBB AdTruth website, bbb.org/council/adtruth, has great resources to help people of all ages learn about advertising, report bad advertising, and think before responding impulsively to an advertised offer. • Model good behavior. Children learn by example, and they look up to the adults in their life. Exercise restraint when making “want” purchases, and save for your future. Show them that you don’t lose money to unethical businesses or scams. Do your research at bbb.org before engaging with a business to make sure you’re making a good decision, and stay up to date on recent scams by checking out BBB Scam Tracker (bbb.org/scamtracker) periodically. • Earning money. It’s a good idea to open up a savings account for a child to help them learn about interest and the “free” money that they can earn from saving. Paying a few dollars for extra chores around the house can teach kids about the value of hard work – money that is truly earned is extra special! Encourage a child’s entrepreneurial spirit, but also make sure to teach them about business ethics. Show them the BBB Standards for Trust (bbb.org/en/us/ standards-for-trust) and make sure they understand the importance of all eight Standards. You can reach your BBB at info@bbbemail. org or (510) 844-2000, or by visiting bbb. org.

comience
a
planificar
3. Comience a aliviarse a tiempo.

HOW TO HAVE THE SMARTEST HOME ON THE BLOCK activated and knowing your outside and inside lights will be on before you arrive home after dark. Convenience

With all the talk about smart technology and connected homes, you may be wondering why you should take notice. After all, it is not that difficult or inconvenient to turn your lights on and off. According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), smart technology is not just about convenience. It is not even just about lighting. It is also about energy efficiency and safety. Efficiency Smart technology allows you to connect your home's electronic devices to one device, such as a phone, tablet or computer. Having a connected home means you have the ability to adjust your thermostat, open and close window shades, and activate your security system remotely, or program those devices to operate automatically at pre-set times. Safety Efficiency is important, but safety is paramount. With the ability to connect to your home's devices from anywhere in the world comes the peace of mind of not wondering if your security system is
Home automation apps make it a snap to change your room into the perfect setting for different activities. For example, for movie night, a system can be pre-programmed to adjust all the lights in your family room to set the scene for a great moviewatching experience. If installing and operating smart technology equipment sounds complicated and expensive, it's not. According to the ALA, there are some simple and surprisingly inexpensive options available on today's market. A number of ALA-member manufacturers, including Legrand, Lutron Electronics, Philips and Acuity Brands Lighting offer reasonably priced, easy-to-install automation products designed to make your home more comfortable, convenient and safe. In many cases, it just takes simple retrofitting of an existing dimmer switch. For added ease, wireless systems can be integrated with Apple, Amazon or Google platforms for use inside your home. And when you are outside, an app or geofencing allows you to adjust your inside and/or outside lights, even before you arrive home. That will make your home welcoming to you and your guests. To learn more about making your home smarter, stop by your local ALA-member lighting showroom to see the latest technology for home environment automation. Go online to DesignVideos.Lighting to view a video from Lutron as well as lightingtrends videos from other ALA-member lighting manufacturers. BOARD OF SUPERVISORS APPROVES UNPRECEDENTED $1 MILLION INVESTMENT Will be Used for First Phase of Santa Clara County’s 2020 Census Effort canvassing and community engagement to identify households that are not in the Census’s current address list. Such households are often found in communities that are undercounted in the Census, including the county’s large populations of immigrants, people of color, young children, single parents, low-income families, large or overcrowded households, and those living in low-visibility housing such as cottages, basements, converted garages and recreational vehicles. By adding missing addresses to the Census Bureau’s address list, the County can ensure that more households have the opportunity to be counted when the Census Bureau carries out its process for counting residents in early 2020. The funding and census plan to address the Census 2020 challenges were initiated by a board referral co-authored by Supervisors Cindy Chavez and Ken Yeager.

ANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — On Tuesday S March 6th, the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors approved an unprecedented $1 million to launch the 2018 Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) effort, one of the most significant opportunities for the County of Santa Clara to ensure that every county household is on the Census Bureau’s address list to be officially counted. This is the first phase of the County’s multi-year campaign to “get out the count” for the 2020 Census.
“Getting accurate 2020 Census numbers is critical in a county this diverse and large. Everyone has a right to be counted, so we can be fairly represented in Congress and receive the federal funding we need for housing and transportation projects,” said Supervisor Cindy Chavez. The County has until June 30, 2018 to complete this first phase of work. The funding will support data gathering, research, local partnerships,
“We are concerned that the Trump Administration will try and punish California by not allocating enough resources for Census 2020 to ensure an accurate count in diverse areas such as Santa Clara County,” said Supervisor Ken Yeager. “The 2020s will be full of challenges, and we will need the strongest voices possible in Washington and Sacramento. That means having all of our residents counted.” The federal government has indicated that,
despite a significant change in methodology and other factors that make undercounts even more likely in 2020, it will not spend more than it spent on the 2010 Census. “Not only is the 2020 Census underfunded by the federal government,” said Supervisor Dave Cortese, “but the atmosphere of fear created by aggressive immigration tactics under the Trump Administration may have a chilling effect on our diverse communities responding to the Census. We need this investment in our Census efforts for our community to be counted accurately and allocated the federal funding to which it is entitled.” Each year, the federal government invests nearly $2,000 per Californian based on census data. Political representation also turns on the decennial census; congressional seats are allocated based on census data, and state and local governments use census data to draw political district boundaries. “The only way we can ensure that the County fairly benefits from federal funding is by making sure that everyone is counted in Census 2020,” said Supervisor Mike Wasserman. “We will have better chances of receiving funding to support essential services such as healthcare, law enforcement and transportation infrastructure that will benefit every individual and family in our community.”

LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST CALIFORNIA FOR ITS SANCTUARY POLICY IS AFFRONT TO RESIDENTS, SAYS IMMIGRANT LEGAL RESOURCE CENTER that they will prioritize their safety and uphold their rights. Presidents, attorneys general and federal agencies should not dictate the laws and policies of California, or any other state, over the will of voters who supported the passage of critical laws being assailed today because they protect immigrants. By declining to voluntarily spend their resources on a federal effort to round-up immigrants and separate them from their families, California is standing strong and not standing down.

The Justice Department is suing California, Governor Jerry Brown, and the state’s attorney general, Xavier Becerra, over three state laws passed in recent months to protect the rights of immigrants. Attorney General Sessions made a formal announcement regarding the lawsuit and California’s “extreme postion” during a visit to Sacramento at the 26th Annual Law Enforcement Legislative Day, hosted by the
California Peace Officers’ Association--a group that opposed Senate Bill 54, which rolled back California's involvement in unjust deportations. Said Grisel Ruiz, staff attorney at the Immigrant Legal Resource Center: “The Trump administration’s threat against California is an affront to state residents and the local elected officials who have passed crucial laws to assure their communities
“ICE is a rogue agency and Californians, through these three laws passed through our bipartisan legislature, have made clear that we want no part of ICE’s unlawful practices. While ICE routinely flouts the constitution, taking action and making requests of local law enforcement that can result in racial profiling and prolonged detention in local jails, California has pushed back hard with policies and practices that affirm our shared values. We have doubled down on our commitment to due process, a guaranteed right under the U.S., transparency, and keeping families together. “Immigrants are intrinsic to California’s past, present, and future. Even in the face of
abuses of power, never-ending intimidation, and retaliation from this White House, we will defend our residents against unjust and illegal detention and deportations. We urge all elected officials to denounce this despicable action from Trump’s Justice Department before the American public loses faith in the integrity of our democracy.” ILRC’s report “The Rise of Sanctuary: Getting Local Law Enforcement out of the Business of Deportation” documents the strengthening of sanctuary protections across 410 localities and five states in 2017, restricting the use of their agencies’ time, money, or other resources from being spent on federal immigration enforcement efforts. The ILRC helped draft language for SB 54, also known as the California Values Act, and supported its final passage to reduce the influence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the state and disentangle local law enforcement officers from ICE’s deportation efforts. The ILRC, in partnership with community-based groups, led a two-year campaign around immigration jail reform, supporting the passage of AB 103.
IMMIGRANTS CAN BE DETAINED INDEFINITELY UNDER SUPREME COURT RULING her group is disappointed with this decision. "Something that the dissent pointed out and recognized is that indefinite immigration detention is a severe and unconstitutional deprivation of one's liberty, and the court actually allowed that deprivation to continue in this decision," she says. "But the fight isn't over."
Eric Tegethoff Public News Service
SEATTLE — People waiting for their immigration case to be decided can be held indefinitely, even if they are legal permanent residents or asylum seekers. In a 5-to-3 decision issued Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling on Jennings v. Rodriguez that gave detainees the right to a bond hearing every six months. People are held an average of 13 months waiting on their cases. However, the Supreme Court also sent the case back to the Ninth Circuit for reconsideration based its constitutional merits. Enoka Herat, police practices and immigration counsel with the ACLU of Washington state, says
The court wrote that immigration officials have the right to detain people during proceedings to determine if they should legally be in the country. There's a backlog of more than 660,000 cases in immigration courts, including more than 10,000 in Washington state, according to a government data-tracking project by Syracuse University.

Tacoma is home to the Northwest Detention Center, the largest immigrant prison on the West Coast and the fourth largest in the country. Herat says detainees held nine hunger strikes at the center in 2017 over conditions in the prison, yet are forced to wait there under this Supreme Court decision. "That can take years and years and years," she laments. "It's a real waste of resources for our country and it really is something that tears families apart. It's a devastating decision in that sense." The lead plaintiff in the case, Alejandro Rodriguez, was a legal permanent resident convicted of joyriding in 1998 and a drug possession fives years later. He was detained for three years without the right to ask for bond. The deportation order against Rodriguez has since been canceled.

WHAT’S SO BAD ABOUT SIPPING YOUR DRINK THROUGH A STRAW ANYWAY? plastic straws won’t completely solve our ocean waste problem, but it will go a long way toward cutting back on plastic in the ocean as well as raising public awareness of the issue in general.
Doug Moss and Roddy Scheer EarthTalk
Americans use 500 million plastic straws—or 1.6 per person on average—every day. Based on this, a typical American will use more than 38,000 plastic straws over the course of a lifetime. While drinking through a single-use plastic straw seems innocent enough, don’t fool yourself: many of these straws find their way into our oceans, polluting underwater ecosystems and harming marine wildlife. Researchers warn that if we don’t clean up our act, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050. Plastics don’t biodegrade, but instead break into tiny pieces which are scooped up by marine organisms unable to digest them — or end up in huge mid-ocean gyres too clogged for ships to pass through. Cutting way back on or eliminating single-use

Last September the city of Seattle went strawless in solidarity with the Lonely Whale Foundation’s Strawless Ocean campaign (look for #StopSucking on Twitter), a global initiative to remove 500 million plastic straws from the U.S. waste stream in 2017. Some 2.3 million plastic straws were permanently removed from the city’s restaurants, cafes, bars and other businesses—and in July 2018 an official ban on plastic straws will go into effect there. Lonely Whale hopes that other cities will follow in Seattle’s forward-thinking footsteps. For those who still love using straws, there are a growing number of reusable alternatives to plastic now available. Bambu Home’s handmade reusable bamboo straws come with a cleaning brush and can be used hundreds of times. Eco at Heart sells reusable steel straws that are durable, easy to clean and portable, so you can bring them into the car, work or anywhere. Steelys reusable steel straws come in a wide variety of sizes, including versions with bent tips. Aardvark’s paper straws are flexible, customizable and durable—and biodegrade on their own within 90 days. Meanwhile, another eco-friendly option is glass, such as those made by Hummingbird Straws. And perhaps even greener are Harvest
Straws, which are grown, harvested and cut by hand in Southern California from heritage, non-GMO grain grown without irrigation, using no chemicals in any part of the process. And reusable water bottles with built-in straws—such as steel and silicone models from Klean Kanteen or glass and metal varieties from Simply Straws—are also a good alternative to plastic straws. You can shop for these and other alternatives to plastic via the strawslessocean.

org website. Using disposable paper straws or opting out from using a straw at a restaurant or drive through are much better options than the conventional plastic straws that will end up as pollution in our oceans or in marine animals’ bodies. It may require a bit of extra work but using reusable straws or alternatives can make a big difference for wildlife and for ourselves.

excellent for group shots and bucolic vistas. Super Slow Motion (slo-mo) The S9 camera offers 60 fps at 4K, 240 fps slo-mo at 1080p, and 960 fps slo-mo at 720p resolution. For non-tech people, this is “super slooooooow mooooootiooooon.” There’s a setting that lets the camera decide if something should be shot in super slo-mo automatically. It’s a feature I think I’ll like long term, but I also wonder if I’ll actually ever turn it on. Multi-Frame Interpolation Wondering what multi-frame interpolation is? When you take a picture, the S9 actually captures 12 shots (three groups of four). Samsung has added some extra memory and some computer magic to the S9 that allows its software to process (interpolate) the 12 photos into one super-awesome photo. Stereo Speakers

Let’s start at the end. If you’re looking for a new Android phone, go look at the Samsung Galaxy S9. It’s about as good as Android handsets get. If you’re an iPhone person thinking that Apple has let you down recently and you’re thinking of switching to an Android phone, go look at the S9. If you take lots of pictures in low light (in restaurants, bars, clubs, etc.), yep, you guessed it, go look at the S9. If you have been dreaming about a phone that delivers super-slow-motion video, again, go look at the S9. For everyone else, the new Samsung Galaxy S9 is a nice to have, not a need to have. Two Sizes Both the S9 with its 5.8″ screen and the S9+ with its larger 6.2″ screen feature Super AMOLED technology. The image quality is out of this world,
and measuring by technical specifications, they are the best screens ever put on a flagship smartphone. The Camera Samsung and Apple have different ways of thinking about picture quality. So there is no point in me waxing poetic about one over the other; you have to choose for yourself. What is important to understand about the S9 is that it is the most camera-centric smartphone Samsung has ever created, and it’s got some tricks – including (finally) a selfie focus mode. Mechanical Iris The main camera lens on the S9 features a mechanical iris with two settings: f/1.5 and f/2.4. This is awesome in many ways. The f/1.5 setting will let in more light than the fixed aperture on the S8 does, so the S9 is going to be a low-light photography superstar. The f/2.4 setting will be
The S9 features Dolby Atmos sound on stereo speakers tuned by AKG. It sounds great. That’s a purely subjective comment, but of all the features listed in this review, sonic quality and sonority were among the most impressive. Bixby Bixby is Samsung’s human/machine interface. It does speech recognition and image recognition, and it has some virtual assistant functionality. It is a work in progress. The S9 has Google Translate’s incredible visual translation tools under the Bixby button. Hold the camera up to a menu that is

written in Chinese, and you will see it in your native language. Hold it up to a road sign or anything else in a foreign language, and not only will it show you the translation, it will do its best to keep the color scheme and font of the original writing. It’s just amazing. AR Emoji The AR Emoji function is an interesting new feature. It lets you scan your face and build an Emoji that looks like you. When you get it right, and it will take more than a few tries, you get an Emoji that you can use like an Apple Animoji. But instead of a prepackaged Apple animal or Martian, you get an avatar of you. You can say stuff and make facial expressions and the AR Emoji will do its best to mimic you. You can make animated gifs out of your work, store a bunch of them locally, and use them to impress your friends. The Bottom Line Should you run out this minute and trade in a smartphone you’re perfectly happy with for a new S9? Probably not. But if you need a new Android phone, you won’t find a better one than the Samsung Galaxy S9. It’s beautifully built, the screen is stunning, the battery life is good, it’s water resistant, you can wirelessly charge it, it takes the best pictures Samsung has ever empowered you to take, and it’s competitively priced with other flagship smartphones.

DESERT SOUNDS AND JOSHUA TREES
We took the new Chevy Traverse on the road, and a bit off the road too
Though we didn’t listen to their f ifth studio album on the drive, (would that be too cliché?), we did use the Traverse’s onboard SiriusXM to listen to tunes, specif ically the “SiriusXM Chill” station. Navigating both the desert and the playlists was simple through the Chevrolet MyLink which sports an 8" diagonal Color Touch screen. Throughout the drive, the relaxing lo-f i and smooth electronic music accompanied fantastic views, f irst of the bustling, palm tree lined Los Angeles cityscape, later replaced by the sparse desert and its Joshua Trees. Red, Red, Drive The Redline edition of the Traverse is part of special edition Chevrolet vehicles that have a sporty, street look with red accents, (hence the “ line”) on the glossy black aluminum wheels, as well as a black grille, and various other details designated to this f leet of slightly more aggressive looking versions of the vehicles.

Arturo Hilario El Observador The Joshua tree is a compelling looking tree that exists in a few unique regions in Southern California around San Bernardino County, as well as parts of Arizona, Nevada and Utah. A two hours’ drive from the closest metropolis, Los Angeles, the desert provides a fascinating environment, more so if one is equipped with the proper tools for the journey out there. During a recent music road trip from L A to Joshua Tree a few members of the media had a chance to test out Chevrolet’s 2018 Traverse “Redline” Premiere Edition. The Traverse is a mid-size SU V which can seat up to 8, and with Wi-Fi 4G and a stereo system complete with SiriusXM radio, music was the method driving out from L A to Joshua Tree. Once we were out in that expanse of f lat, glistening desert and rock formations, we would be headed to Joshua Tree and Pioneertown to touch base with the music history of the area, as well as f ind out how the allure of such a place continues to attract people in music industry to this day. The Desert Dagger Yucca brevifolia is the species name
of the iconic Joshua Tree. In Spanish it is referred to as the “izote de desierto”, or “desert dagger”. It’s current English designation comes from Mormons who, when f irst seeing the trees, were reminded of a bible story where Joshua reached his arms out in the sky in prayer. Its iconic, twisting and bushy but sharp branches are both a testament to its survival technique in the desert, and its draw to the Southwest by artists and those curious to explore such a place. Located in the Lost Horse Valley and close to where Coachella takes place, the Joshua Tree region has the vast space and beautiful scenery to give anyone some sort of emotional response. Many musicians, writers and artists have come, surveyed, and used the imagery of the area for their music, books, and paintings.
The Traverse I drove was the color “Silver Ice Metallic”, and the Redline details popped out more than what I’ve seen from other color models, not to say that those aren’t as slick looking either. (Personally, the black shade of Redline editions are my favorite aesthetically). Pink Studio, Not A Mirage One of our stops as we journeyed from city to desert was the Pink Satellite Studios in Joshua Tree. A residential recording studio, it’s perched atop a small patch of raised land off a dirt road, (the roads are def initely on Google Maps though which was good for us). It is literally pink, with various murals painted on outer walls, and a house adjacent to it, also pink.
Bono of U2 once said of the American desert, “"I love being there, I love America, I love the feeling of the wide-open spaces, I love the deserts, I love the mountain ranges.”
Getting there was great, as we got to really try out some dirt roads at some points which the Traverse handled with ease. Our entourage of 6 Traverses pulled up into this mirage of a place, and besides a tour of the fully equipped sound studio, we were in for a neat surprise.
As we drove around the desert on a bright, 75-degree February day, there was def initely the feelings of awe that might’ve been felt by the members of U2. This place had had a profound effect on them, and they had their album photo sessions here for their critically acclaimed ode to the open space of America, “The Joshua Tree”.
There we met Queen Keyboardist Spike Edney, founder of the Pink Satellite Studios. As we ate some tacos with a jaw dropping view, one story he told still rings with me: One afternoon he was enjoying the outside views of the desert and the mountain ranges in the distance, with a margarita in hand, when he

f irst caught wind of the now very well-known musical artist Adam Lambert (of American Idol fame). Edney’s wife hurried him indoors to listen to Lambert perform a cover of the band Edney was part of, and he very quickly got in touch with the Queen manager and began the process which would lead to the project now known as Queen + Adam Lambert. After this very very great experience, our journey continued from Pink Satellite Studios to our f inal stop, Pioneertown. Pioneertown, USA As the sun set on our journey and on the Lost Horse Valley, we drove through the highway leading to Pioneertown. Shadows cast over the trees of Joshua, with their “arms” up into the sky, or sometimes to the side, giving this place on otherworldly majesty at the twilight hour. In Pioneertown we decided to take some f inal photo ops with the Traverse amongst the old wooden buildings that were made up to look like an old western town for Holly wood f ilms and T V shows starting in the 1940’s. There is a working post off ice amongst the buildings with a sign claiming, “The Pioneertown post off ice is said to be the most photographed post off ice in the entire United States.” As the sky turned hues of purple we drove our Traverse off the main street of the cowboy town back to home base for the night, the Pioneertown Motel. As the rest of the group of reviewers and crew for the trip regrouped after the day of driving through Sunset Boulevard to the dirt and sand “roads” leading to the Pink Satellite Studios, we settled in at Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace for dinner. What struck me the most after 13 or so hours of traveling around the area in the Traverse was how comforting the drive was, and how comfortable it was too. And now as we were here, seated and having our table chat, a band came on stage. Pappy & Harriet’s is known for their live music, along with being pretty much the only place in the area open at night. The band, called Neila Dar, had originated from Italy and moved to the region because of the allure of Joshua Tree. They said between songs, this place was “ home now”. And then the music carried on.
