¿QUÉ LES PREOCUPA A LOS VOTANTES LATINOS ?
WHAT ARE LATINO VOTERS WORRIED ABOUT?
José López
Zamorano La Red Hispana
Amenos

In Arizona, about a quarter of likely voters are of Latino origin, according to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO).
In Nevada, the situation is similar. Latinos make up nearly one in five registered voters and tend to be younger and unaffiliated with either major party than non-Latinos.

Lessthan seven months before the November 5 elections, we hear again that Latinos could be decisive in the outcome.
Of the six swing states that could define the presidential election in one way or another, Arizona and Nevada emerge as two key places where the Latino vote can, in fact, be the difference.
A compilation of polls conducted by The New York Times and Siena College suggests that Latino support for President Joe Biden is weakening compared to the 2020 presidential election.
An extensive study conducted this week by the organization UnidosUS, formerly the National Council of La Raza, shows that the main concerns of Hispanic voters are, at this time, related to the economy.
82% of Latinos interviewed cite an increase in the costs of food and basic living expenses. 76% mentioned costs to buy or rent a place to live. 67% list gas prices and 51% cite the cost of healthcare-related expenses, such as medications and doctor visits.
When asked about the main factors driving their concern about jobs and the economy, 58% said their job does not pay enough or that they have to look for a second job to make ends meet. 40% say their job does not offer paid leave or sick days. 37% are concerned about layoffs or reduced hours.
Among those who indicated that health care was a top priority issue, 66% of voters cited high costs such as monthly premiums, copays and deductibles and 53% cited high costs of prescription drugs.
“Concerns about personal financial circumstances and continued stressful economic experiences underscore the feelings of pessimism prevalent across all demographic groups,” UnidosUS said.
Their conclusion is that many Latinos feel pessimistic about the direction of the country and most do not see either party as effective advocates for their most pressing concerns.
The message to Democrats and Republicans is clear: If either party wants to win the Hispanic vote, it is important not only that they speak to them in Spanish, but that they respond to their most pressing needs and the aspirations of an electorate whose vote they are not guaranteed.

BANNING CELLPHONES AT SCHOOL BRINGS POSITIVE CHANGES FOR STUDENTS
LA PROHIBICIÓN DE LOS TELÉFONOS MÓVILES EN LA ESCUELA TRAE CAMBIOS POSITIVOS PARA LOS ESTUDIANTES.

eparating high school students from their cellphones might be seen as a daunting task but one California school said having students stash them during the school day has brought some surprising results.
Administrators at High Tech High in San Diego said fostering a phone-free school environment led to positive change. Starting this school year, High Tech High required students to relinquish their phones at the beginning of the day.
Colleen Glass, compliance officer for the school, said tracking student perceptions and observing the impact of cellphones on the learning culture provides a compelling case study.
"Where before, they were sitting in those spaces and kind of 'heads down' into their technology, they're now sitting in those spaces and having conversations," Glass explained. "There's a lot more engagement and conversation in class, because students are talking to each other and they're not listening to their AirPods."
Across the country, more than threequarters of K-12 public schools prohibit nonacademic cellphone use, according to a report from the 2021-2022 school year. But only 43% of public high schools have such a rule and it is often not enforced.
Doug Keller, partnerships lead for the nonprofit Youth Truth, said it has been tracking students' experiences over the past decade in such areas as engagement, relationships, culture, academic challenges and their overall sense of
belonging. He noted once the phones were gone from classes, the majority of students showed improvement in several areas.
"When they implemented the policy, we saw a sharp jump upward," Keller reported. "We saw growth, students feeling a stronger sense of belonging at their school because of this new policy, after seeing a decline that matched the decline that we have anecdotally seen elsewhere."
Keller added Youth Truth surveyed students to measure the "intersection of student voice, school improvement and key indicators of the student experience." It also includes areas like peer collaboration and relationships with their teachers. He emphasized they will continue the study in future years.

CONNECTING FARMWORKERS TO HEALTHCARE IN CALIFORNIA’S RURAL NORTH
Promotoras have emerged as an essential piece in California’s ambitious plan to deliver healthcare to all residents regardless of immigration status.
Peter Schurmann Ethnic Media Services
HAMILTON
CITY, Calif. – It’s late February and the road to Hamilton City, an agricultural community about 10 miles west of Chico, is lined with blooming almond trees, their pink blossoms blanketing the fields for miles around. A single clinic stands in the center of town.
Inside the clinic we meet Maria Soto, whose work as a promotora is an essential piece in California’s ambitious plan to deliver healthcare to all residents regardless of immigration status.
“I identify very much with the community,” says Soto, 57. “I worked in the fields, harvesting and sorting nuts here. So, I love it. It gives me a lot of satisfaction when someone says, ‘Thank you for helping me.’ This for me is invaluable.”
Soto is one of four promotoras (individuals who provide basic health education to the community) with the non-profit healthcare provider Ampla Health, which operates more than a dozen clinics across six counties – Glenn, Butte, Colusa, Sutter, Tehama and Yuba – in California’s rural north. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, Ampla Health is tasked with expanding access to Medi-Cal (California’s version of Medicaid) across the entirety of its jurisdiction.
That job took on added importance as of January 1, when undocumented immigrants ages 26-49 became eligible for the program. Earlier expansions targeted both older adults and children. This latest phase makes California one of the first states in the country to offer healthcare to all eligible residents.
With nearly 16 million enrolled – or one out of every three Californians – Medi-Cal is the nation’s largest Medicaid provider. With the current expansion the state expects to add an additional 500,000 to 700,000 to its list, at a cost of some $2.6 billion per year. Medi-Cal’s total annual operating budget tops $37 billion. Eligibility is based on income, with the upper limit for an individual set at $21,680 per year, with approximately another $7,100 for every additional member of the household. Medi-Cal covers medical, dental and vision services.
The challenge now is making sure those communities who stand to benefit are informed about the opportunities available, which in California’s far north is easier said than done.
Accessing healthcare ‘without fear’
We’re standing in an open field of almond trees, on a farm about 30 minutes outside Hamilton City. Around us a group of about a dozen farmworkers is gathered, all originally from the same community in the state of Puebla, Mexico.
“She came and interrupted our work once,” jokes Elfego Palestino Vidal gesturing towards Soto. “I never enrolled before,” he says, adding that in recent years he’s seen more of his coworkers fall ill because of the increasingly extreme weather. “Sometimes it gets very cold, it rains a lot, then it gets very hot.” Having access to Medi-Cal will “help a lot,” he says.
Famed for its sprawling forests, towering peaks and rugged coastline, the North State, as it’s known –stretching from the Oregon border in the north to just above Sacramento farther south – is beset by some of the state’s most glaring health disparities, from higher rates of poverty and premature death to substance abuse, and behavioral and mental health challenges.
Much of the region is also designated as a Health Provider Shortage Area (HPSA), meaning fewer healthcare resources per capita. For marginalized communities, including many of the farmworkers interviewed for this story, that creates additional barriers to accessing care.
Another farmworker, Leonardo Hernandez Mesa, a husband and father of two, describes how he put off visiting the doctor in the past when he fell ill. He points to his throat and ear as he recalls a recent bout of infections. “Emergency visits are too expensive,” he says, noting that his brother – also a farmworker – has Type 1 Diabetes.
“This is a great opportunity to get health insurance without fear,” says Hernandez, adding that it will allow people to detect health issues earlier rather than later. He says he’s often heard others talk about putting off hospital visits.
A study from UC Merced last year found that nearly half of all farmworkers in California lacked health insurance at some point over the previous 12 months. The study
also found that just 43% of farmworkers had visited a doctor’s office while only 35% had been to a dentist. Other studies have found a stark disparity in access to mental health and other behavioral services for farmworkers in particular.
Simon Vazquez, who has worked at the same farm in Hamilton City for over two decades and is the foreman here, hasn’t seen a doctor since 2018. He peppers Soto with questions about where and how to contact her, whether he needs to renew every year (you do), and what he needs to bring for a medical or dental visit (a photo ID and Medi-Cal card).
“We’re here to help you with whatever questions you have. You have my information, you have my phone number,” she says patiently.
Reaching the ‘hardly reached’
“A big part of my day is driving around looking for farmworkers,” explains Soto, who came to the US as an undocumented immigrant herself in 1991 and spent time working in the almond fields surrounding Hamilton City. In 2007, she began working with Ampla Health, then known as Del Norte Clinics, after a chance meeting with the organization’s promotora coordinator at a local Mexican eatery.

“She asked me what I knew about being a promotora. I told her I didn’t know anything.” Soto eventually applied, was given training, and has been committed to promotora work ever since. “I’ve fallen more in love with the work as the years have passed,” she says.
The promotora model was first developed in the northern Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez in the early 1970s as a way for the city government to deliver healthcare and related information to marginalized communities. The model soon spread across Latin America, later making its way into the US.
It’s unclear how many promotoras are currently working across California. Some, like Soto, are employed directly by healthcare providers or community organizations. Others work in more informal capacities. The advocacy group Visión y Compromiso, which launched the state’s first network of promotoras in 2001, claims some 4,000 members across 13 regions of California, almost all of them in the southern and central parts of the state where population numbers are larger and overall demand for services greater.
According to data from UC Davis’s Center for Reducing Health Disparities, there are an estimated 10,000 farmworkers across the six counties served by Ampla Health. If their family members are included, that number jumps to nearly 30,000 individuals. While it’s unclear how many are undocumented, data shows that nearly three quarters of the more than half a million farmworkers in California lack documentation.
Dr. Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola, who heads the Center for Reducing Health Disparities, calls these communities “hardly reached,” and says local and state agencies have to be proactive in terms of getting the word out. “I’m not sure if they will take advantage of this ,” he said during a recent Ethnic Media Services briefing. “It depends on how you communicate.”
A ‘tremendous need’
Aguilar-Gaxiola, who has spent decades researching health inequities impacting California’s farmworker population, points to a range of barriers – from language and culture to fear of deportation – that prevent many from coming forward to access available resources.
“This is a tremendous need,” says Aguilar-Gaxiola. “Meeting it requires more than goodwill and wanting to do the right thing. In order to reach these populations, building trust is front and center.”
During the Trump administration a law known as the Public Charge Rule, which threatened deportation for migrants accessing public benefits, cast a shadow of fear over the community. While essentials like healthcare and food are not considered part of a public charge determination, many immigrants continue to be fearful of enrolling in public programs like Medi-Cal. “People will be hesitant to enroll into Medi-Cal due to the fear of public charge,” agrees Cynthia Peshek, outreach program manager with Ampla Health. “We need to ensure that this is not the situation. They need to go ahead and tap into these resources. There will still be those who don’t want to take a chance, therefore public charge may still be a barrier for some.”
Ampla Health organizes local health fairs and other community events in addition to working with promotoras as part of a suite of strategies aimed at connecting people to healthcare. But Peshek is concerned that providers in other counties where resources are more limited may not have the necessary resources to deliver on this current expansion. “It’s going to be a big undertaking,” she says.
Peshek points out that Ampla Health recently added two new clinics to its existing network to meet growing demand. “There is just so much opportunity right now,” she notes. “We need to get the word out in all of the areas that we serve.”
Back at the farm, another in the group, Daniel, says he’s not currently covered. He’s young, in his mid-20s. He says he’s visited Ampla Health in the past and that he now wants to enroll to avoid the high costs of medical services and any medicines he may need. “It’s a big help.”
As we depart, he nods toward Soto. “Thank you for being here. Thank you for not forgetting about us.”

Peter Schurmann Ethnic Media Services
“A veces hace mucho frío, llueve
mucho y luego hace mucho calor”. Tener acceso a Medi-Cal “ayudará mucho”, dice.

FRESNO,
California — An increasing number of hate crimes are being reported in California, but convictions continue to remain low, said California Attorney General Rob Bonta.
Speaking to Ethnic Media Services here on the sidelines of the United Against Hate summit at Fresno City College, Bonta noted that hate crimes are notoriously difficult to prosecute. “They require a proof of intent. By design, a hate crime must originate with the hate element, which is often difficult to establish,” he said.
“Hate crimes are an augmentation of sentencing: it is seen as something additional. You’re already charging assault or battery,” said Bonta, noting that a successful hate crime conviction might add 2 to 5 years to a sentence. He urged victims of a hate crime to gather up as much evidence as possible and to get details.
Low Conviction Rates
Last June, Bonta’s office released the 2022 Hate Crime in California Report. The report noted that reported hate crime events in the state increased 20.2%, from 1,763 in 2021 to 2,120 in 2022. Hate crimes targeting Black people remained the most prevalent and increased 27.1% from 513 in 2021 to 652 in 2022, while anti-Asian hate crime events decreased by 43.3% from 247 in 2021 to 140 in 2022.
Hate crimes in California involving a sexual orientation bias increased, by 29%, from 303 in 2021 to 391 in 2022.
But of the over 2,100 hate crimes reported in the state, only 52 resulted in hate crime convictions.
The majority of hate crimes reported never made it to court: just 456 cases were filed by district attorneys and elected city attorneys, according to the report.
Divisive Political Rhetoric
In his formal remarks at the summit, Bonta said hate was not a new phenomenon. “It’s been with us since time immemorial. We need to take care of each other, look after one another, and be committed to the proposition that hate against any one of us is hate against all of us, and it’s unacceptable.” He said he feared for his mother, amid the rise of violent hate attacks targeting AAPI elderly people.
The Attorney General tacitly referred to the rise in hate crimes over the past 7 months targeting both Jewish Americans and Arab Americans, brought on by the Israel-Hamas war. “The awful, unacceptable deaths of children and civilians that we’re seeing in Palestine and in Israel are unacceptable. And they’re affecting us here.”
The Trump Factor
Bonta also indirectly addressed Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has used very divisive rhetoric on the campaign trail. The candidate has repeatedly claimed that “immigrants are poisoning the blood of America,” and has promised to reinstate his “Muslim ban.”
“We have leaders who use the most toxic, xenophobic language. They give license to others.”
Bonta was asked a question by organizer Darren Miller, about the predicted chaos expected
to ensue if Trump does not win. “One of the hallmarks of a democracy is the peaceful transfer of power. You cannot claim victory when you win, and malfeasance when you don’t,” said Bonta.
Distrust of Police
The United Against Hate summit April 6 was organized by the Community Alliance newspaper in collaboration with the Fresno Center. The daylong event brought together more than 20 non-profit organizations, who set up tables outside the venue to share their efforts towards ending hate. Mike Rhodes, executive director of the Community Alliance, told EMS that Fresno and neighboring cities were rife with hate activity, much of which is unreported.
“A lot of people here don’t trust the police,” said Rhodes, adding that when hate crimes and incidents are reported, they often go unnoticed. The Fresno Police Department did set up an information table at the event.
The morning featured four concurrent workshops, including tools for bystanders witnessing a hate crime; what to do if you’re a victim of a hate crime; and a “know your rights” discussion led by the Council on American Islamic Relations. Amir Brooks, who presided over the workshop, recalled a recent event in which he was stopped by police in the small town of Clovis, California.
Walking While Black
Brooks is Black and disabled. “I was hobbling to the store. Within a couple of minutes, police stopped me, shined a light in my face, and asked a bunch of questions,” he said.
“When I got to the store, I was stopped by two more cops, who again questioned me, and then checked out my answers against the ones I had given the other cops.”
“As I walked home, the cops followed me. They had obviously identified me as a suspect without any reason,” said Brooks.

FRESNO,

GROUPS PLEAD WITH CA LEGISLATORS TO SAVE MARKET MATCH PROGRAM
ENGLISH
California's program helping lowincome families buy fresh fruit and vegetables is on the chopping block and health care advocates are asking legislators to save the Market Match program.
Gov. Gavin Newsom has proposed cutting most of the program's $35 million budget to help close the state's budget shortfall.
Sophia Vaccaro, a participant in Market Match from Echo Park, said she depends on Market Match in more ways than one.
"It helps people being able to stretch their budget further," Vaccaro explained. "Then, I think it helps the community, in that it creates a sense of camaraderie at the farmers' market and makes people more invested in the community itself."
The program matches every dollar CalFresh customers spend on fresh fruits and vegetables at a farmer's market up to between $10 and $20 per day. It is active at 294 sites across the state and is partially paid for through federal matching funds.
Dr. John Maa, surgeon at Marin Health Medical Center and board member of the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the American Heart Association, said Market Match promotes healthy eating and boosts the local farm economy.
"An improved diet really will have long-term meaningful impacts on health, and also reduce health care costs," Maa explained. "It really helps to sustain the growers and the merchants. I guess it's a win-win-win."
Siu Han Cheung, outreach coordinator for the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation and board member of the Heart of the City Farmers' Market, argued the program is vital to residents across the state.
"If the Market Match will be cut, that is terrible," Cheung stressed. "That means they have less money to buy their food. So, Market Match is very important for the low-income families and the seniors."
Legislators and the governor are working toward the May budget revisions, and must pass a balanced budget by June 15.

ELECTION OFFICIAL TURNOVER TREND STRETCHES TWO DECADES
ENGLISH
Anew
report dives into election official turnover during more than two decades. It says rates have increased steadily nationwide since 2000, with the highest level in 2022.
Washington state has seen lower rates of turnover than many states, increasing from 23% in 2004 to 33% in 2022, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center.
Rachel Orey - senior associate director of the elections project with the center - said elections have increasingly complex jobs alongside the day-to-day logistics, likely driving turnover.
"Today, election officials must manage everything," said Orey, "from cybersecurity risks posed by foreign adversaries, to public communications of people who are doubting the outcome of elections, to information technology, legal disputes, political pressures, human resources. The list goes on."
While Washington has seen lower turnover rates than other states, the West is projected to have the highest turnover of any region in 2024 - with a rate of nearly 42%.
Orey said recent increases have occurred in larger jurisdictions, which have received the brunt of scrutiny in the wake of the 2020 election.
She said increasing workloads for election officials have coincided with widespread reports of threats and harassment that are making election administration untenable work.
"That's where state and federal legislators can really step in," said Orey, "to provide adequate resources, competitive compensation levels and safety protections for election officials." However, turnover doesn't necessarily mean the people taking over are inexperienced. Orey said new officials have an average of eight years of experience in top-level positions.
"So, when we see a turnover in a chief election official, it isn't always the case that someone new is coming in who doesn't know what they're doing," said Orey. "Rather, we see more often that it is folks with lots of experience in elections who are stepping into these chief roles."
Support for this reporting was provided by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
LA TENDENCIA DE ROTACIÓN DE FUNCIONARIOS ELECTORALES SE EXTIENDE POR DOS DÉCADAS
ESPAÑOL
UnEric Tegethoff Public News Service

COULD THINGS GET MORE EMOTIONAL? HOW HOCKEY, PUBERTY AND AN UNANSWERED QUESTION CAME TOGETHER TO BECOME INSIDE OUT 2
It started out with Kelsey Mann asking Inside Out Director and current Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter a question that had been on his mind since the ending of the 2015 film.
At one point in the film the large control board the emotions use suddenly has a new addition to the controls, a dormant red siren with the word “PUBERTY” written below it. “Hey, guys, what’s PUBER-TY?” asks Disgust (voiced by Mindy Kaling in the original). “I don’t know. It’s probably not important,” answers Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler).
As we arrive to the conclusion of the film, Riley has grown in her personality and is excited for the future, ending things on a triumphant hockey match with her team. Joy exclaims in a voiceover, “Things couldn’t be better. After all Riley’s twelve now. What could happen?”
Producer Mark Nielsen, who was the associate producer on the original, states that last line was simply a final joke for what they thought was a standalone project.
“I will say that that was not a lead in line for a sequel. We thought it'd be funny after Joy has been through all that she goes through in that movie to kind of have her forget everything that she just learned. Even though everything went upside down for her, she's like, “Reily's twelve now. It's going to be great!” She's a delusional optimist, and that's what we love about Joy. But yeah, there was no early thinking about a sequel. It wasn't until much later that Pete Docter asked to explore whether or not there's another story.”
On the other hand, that last bit about “what could happen” made Mann
think about what another adventure could look like for Riley as she grew into adolescence.
“I started by watching the first film with Pete, and we watched the whole thing. Then that line came at the end. I'm like, "Pete, It's right there. Look what you did. I want to know the answer to that question.””
As Mann was working on another Pixar film at the time, he came into the viewings with Docter as an audience member with notes and that main question that persisted.
“"Well, I want that question answered. Give that to me!" And so, I was in the opportunity where I could actually make that
happen.”
Docter, who won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year with Inside Out, asked Mann and his crew to find a reason, an answer to that question and see if it would work as a feature length film that could do justice to the memorable story of the original.
It turns out Pixar found the answer they were looking for.
Puberty & the Human Experience
Building upon that central question of “what could happen?” Inside Out 2 brings audiences back to the world of the Andersen family and most
importantly, to the world inside Riley Anderson’s thoughts as she begins puberty.
This new phase in her life turns the emotions in her head into chaos as new emotion-coworkers suddenly join them, and immediately butt heads on how to best help navigate teenage Riley’s new life experiences and feelings.
The returning voice cast for the emotions includes Amy Poehler, Lewis Black, Phyllis Smith, Tony Hale and Liza Lapira (replacing Mindy Kaling), as Joy, Anger, Sadness, Fear and Disgust, respectively, while also welcoming newcomers Maya Hawke, Ayo Edebiri, Adèle Ex-
archopoulos, and Paul Walter Hauser as the new emotions Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment.
Puberty is a universal experience as one grows out of childhood and into adolescence, and the creative team for Inside Out 2 wanted to find an honest way to tell the story with themes and situations that would resonate with a large amount of ages and experiences
For references for the film, both Mann and Nielson relied on their experiences not only as humans with emotions, but as fathers to multiple teenagers during the production.
“When I started, my daughter was 13 and my son was 14. So, I’m like this is the exact age I want her to be in the movie. And so they’re immediately right there. You’re always pulling from your lives in every movie I’ve done here. We’re always talking about what it’s like to be alive and be a person, a father, a husband, you know, whatever it may be. So, you’re always kind of putting that into the movie,” says Mann.
Nielson adds, “This really is a parental story, and even though it takes place in Riley's mind,

Director Kelsey Mann and Producer Mark Nielsen Give Insight on Why a Quest To Answer a Question From the Original Film Lead Them Towards a Sequel With Even More Emotions, What the Approach Was To Share a Universal Teenage Experience, and How They Made Hockey as Authentic as Possible ENGLISH

she is kind of the set piece and there's something incredibly universal about this story and these emotions that we all have. And you know, even Joy who's the protagonist of this story, has a very parental view of Riley and all the emotions do, right? They're there to serve her. They're there to do their very best to do whatever they need to protect their girl and to kind of steer her in the right way. And so even you know, the original film was based on Pete Docter's observations of his daughter as she was growing up and going through change and becoming a young teen. And so having the parental lens on this film has been incredibly helpful.”
Test screenings for both the original film and the new sequel proved to be effective at communicating complex emotions and experiences with both young and adult audiences.
“It was incredible to see just how much the kids got it and understood it, almost more than the adults did. And we asked them to just explain what happened in the story they just watched, and you gotta give kids a lot of credit,” says Nielson.
Mann adds, “What’s really cool about this world of Inside Out is it gives people a language in order to talk about really complex things. And the first film really did that, especially for children. They were able to talk about their emotions and it was very exciting for us on this film in order to expand that vocabulary so that we can talk to our kids about these complicated, more complicated emotions.”
Homegrown Hockey, Pixar Style
Hockey returns to Inside Out 2 in a big way, with Riley now fully embracing her sport of choice from the first film. This time around though, hockey becomes more difficult as she begins to experience internal conflict and difficulties that stem from trying to impress her future high school team at tryout camp without losing her best friends who have played alongside her for years.
The scenes we previewed at Pixar Studios looked incredible, from the movement to the editing – the hockey footage is a great time to watch play out, and a perfect catalyst for the various new emotions that Riley will face.
For the story aspect, Mann wanted to focus on the new challenges in Riley’s life by raising the stakes with hockey and her relationships within that world.
“I certainly felt this when I was a kid, and I can see it even in my own kids. You're playing the sport that you loved as a child, and then suddenly you get into high school and you have to try out for the team. You don't automatically make
it. You might get cut. And so suddenly you're going to a whole other level that you're like, "Am I good enough to even play this anymore?””
“We wanted Riley to have to deal with that and to go to a whole new social group of this new high school team that she wants to be friends with. But in order to be friends with them, she has to make the team. But there's a higher bar now. It's not like everybody makes the team anymore. So I'm like, "I really want to lean into the hockey on this movie," and man, did we ever.”
And since hockey is highlighted throughout the film, the creative team had to look into how to translate the sport in the most honest and realistic way into the world of Inside Out 2. For that they looked within their own employees at Pixar, as well as the Bay Area’s rich hockey culture.
As a San Jose based paper we are proud of our local professional team, the San Jose Sharks, and wondered if the proximity of Pixar to the Bay Area’s many hockey ties had any direct effect or inspiration for the filmmakers.
It turns out that in their research they did reach out to local youth hockey organizations, visited the Sharks’ public ice rinks, such as the one in Oakland and San Jose, but also received a lot of hockey education from within Pixar itself, as there were many staff members that had experience with the sport. One key staff member they relied on for support was Character Technical Director Tracey McHugh-Roberts.
“She's a coach of youth hockey. She grew up as a hockey player [and] we named Coach Roberts in the movie after her,” Nielsen says.
This approach to bridging the emotions of the story with the sport, along with a teased surprise voice cameo from a current Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) player with ties to the Sharks, should be exciting news for moviegoers who are also hockey fans.
Nielson adds, “We had a lot of people helping us keep the hockey very authentic. We wanted it to be diverse, too. There's diversity in hockey in the Bay Area, maybe beyond what you see in other places. And because this is set in San Francisco, we love the idea of having it be more of a diverse team.”
Inside Out 2 is out in theaters on June 14, 2024.
"No sé.

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office where the property is located or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

EARTHTALK Q&A: FUSION THE FUTURE?
EARTHTALK Q&A: ¿FUSIÓN EL FUTURO? ENGLISH
our climate goals.” It is easy to see why scientific minds want to invest in nuclear fusion.

While nuclear fission is commonly used in nuclear power plants across the globe, nuclear fusion is a lesser-known process. Whereas fission is the process of releasing energy by splitting atoms apart, fusion is the opposite. During nuclear fusion light nuclei collide with each other to form heavier nuclei, a process that releases large amounts of energy. To produce fusion, it requires a combination of the hydrogen gasses deuterium and tritium, which are heated to over 100 million degrees celsius. The end result is a helium nucleus and a neutron, formed from the collision of light nuclei.
Fusion power offers so many advantages that many have heralded it the “Holy Grail” of clean energy. The most enticing advantage is that nuclear fusion produces no carbon emissions. The only by-products of the reaction are small amounts of helium. There are also abundant resources to produce fusion. Deuterium can be extracted from water and tritium can be produced from lithium. Nuclear fusion offers a safer alternative to nuclear fission, as a large-scale nuclear accident is not possible in a fusion reactor. And unlike fission, there is no radioactive waste as a result. The energy efficiency of fusion is another major advantage. One kilogram of fusion fuels could theoretically provide the same amount of energy as 10 million kilograms of fossil fuel.
Many billionaires and tech moguls have recognized the potential of nuclear fusion and have invested in its future, Bill Gates being the most well-known. Founded by Gates in 2015, Breakthrough Energy Ventures is a fund set up to invest in clean energy transition innovations. Breakthrough Energy is supported and funded by other well-known billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson. In an interview with ABC News in 2023, Gates said, “Nuclear energy, if we do it right, will help us solve
So why isn’t nuclear fusion already implemented across the states? Nuclear fusion has proven difficult to implement and other energy sources often provide more reliable and consistent energy gains. It wasn’t until December 2022 that the National Ignition Facility announced a breakthrough in that it was the first time a nuclear fusion reaction created a net gain of energy. There is still much work to be done to make fusion a reliable source of energy. Other clean energy sources have considerable head starts on fusion. The first nuclear fusion reactor was started up in 1951, while the first windmills and solar panels were built in the 1880s. Other energy sources have had much more time to be perfected and improved upon. They also achieve much higher net energy gains than fusion.

Mientras
