Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR This 2018 Midterm Election Year provides ordinary citizens an opportunity to express their support for those elected officials who are perceived not to have become beholden to special interests and their DARK MONEY. It does take doing some homework; being observant about intangible personal traits of temperament including honesty, integrity, morality, and what I call “GOOD SAMARITAN STEWARDSHIP”. It is possible to determine who looks out for others; who is not self-serving; who is willing to seek a foundation of facts, understanding in order to make evidence-based decisions. The creative organization of activities is necessary which not only inform, but also generate an interest in permitting a larger portion of all America's communities to earn their 'share the wealth'. More often than not, the resources used have received value added efforts. For example, iron and aluminum exist naturally in abundant amounts throughout this earth. However it takes knowledgeable smelters to apply their acquired 'know-how' to convert iron ore, limestone, and coke (a derivative of coal) placed in a blast furnace into which air is blasted to enable the burning coke to generate heat exceeding 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit - creating the smelting environment which produces 'pig iron', slag, and exhaust gases (much of which is carbon dioxide). Each heat yields molten pig iron which may be allowed to create different kinds of specialty steels. Structural steel I-beams have certain characteristics; surgical steel reflects its ‘performance

Metallurgical science has been acquired over the years of collected human experience which has been shared up to a point. Different groups of steel workers have proprietary smelting experience and know how to pass that knowledge and experience from one generation to the next. Humanity has experienced the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, then the Industrial Age, which was the manufacturing of goods useful to many, from cooking utensils to vehicles. Many in Silicon Valley's Information Technology Age seem to lose sight of the reality that their achievements take advantage of the properties of electrons which travel through conductive metals at almost the speed of light... a speed so fast that it seems instantaneous (but is not). My family (father, 5 brothers, and a sister) were steelworkers. Brother Mike was a bricklayer who was internationally known (had a high school diploma) because he had acquired a knowledge of 'refractory materials' (usually highly pure alumina) used to line the furnaces in which the necessary very high temperatures could be reached and sustained. Refractory bricks are used to line blast furnaces, open hearths, and many sophisticated heating assemblies used to extract iron and other metals from their naturally occurring ores. It is this sort of 'intangible proprietary knowledge’ which many American firms are required to share when their corporations attempt to enter a foreign market's commerce. The current 'import tariffs' being proposed by the Trump Administration

evoked a retaliatory response by Chinese leaders. Note that these 'import/export tariffs' involve iron and aluminum...the basic metals to which are attached the many sophisticated circuit boards, switching devices; and other hi-tech read-out assemblies. Another very important collection of specialty know-how deals with 'insulating materials' which ensure that electronic signals travel only correct circuit routes per design plans. Now, in light of the above, understand that recent efforts of U.S. Congressman Rho Khanna (Democrat-CA District 17) invited groups of Silicon Valley notables to travel to America's RUST BELT where many capable and flexible individuals reside and are UNDEREMPLOYED BECAUSE OF AMERICAN TRADE POLICIES WHICH PERMITTED FOREIGN IRON PRODUCTS to enter the American market. Even Mr. Trump 'saved money' by using steel I-beams to build the supporting infrastructures of high rise buildings at a lower cost. Time will provide the service record purchased. American steel which supports skyscrapers has performed its 'support assignment' for decades. Investors are needed as well as those who formulate public policy (especially U.S. Congress members), who need to understand that very high quality basic products are not produced in the corporate conference rooms nor by those who legislate. By his actions, one may project that Congress member Rho Khanna, who was raised in the current Rust Belt, has operational insights which investors and legislators need to listen to and understand... if America is to do two things: A) establish conditions of commerce which enable American steelworker (and steel industry) to continue commercial operations; and

B) Find alternative training resulting in employment for displaced steel workers resulting from automation, robotics, and cybernetics which enabled construction of high volume blast furnaces able to produce more pig iron using fewer steel workers. Too many managers, investors (venture capital), and legislators view “LABOR” simply as 'those grunts who do the work'. Many tasks contintue to exist because no 'automation short cuts' have yet been devised BY THOSE WHO DO THE WORK; WHO INVARIABLY OBSERVE AND GAIN INSIGHTS WHICH IMPROVES PRODUCT QUALITY AND PRODUCTIVITY. Again, this never happens in the legislative chambers of any nation nor at the conferences tables of those who govern, manage or invest. What happens there are schemes to maximize profits; minimize cost of production, distribution and sales. Lack of pertinent information has consequences: The residents of Flint, Michigan were inadvertently injured to an unknown degree when a government official decided that drinking water bought from Detroit could be replaced at lower cost by water from a nearby river. The acidity (pH) of the river water was such that it eroded lead from piping installed by plumbers when molten lead was used to join ceramic, concrete and metal piping which conveyed the water from source to treatment facility to those who consumed it. Lead joints and piping released trace quantities when acidic pH levels existed. Human physiology is not capable of 'excreting lead ingested' with the result that brain functions are damaged resulting in 'lower cognition abilities' for which the only cure is to stop using water tainted with lead. But the damage

to human nervous potentials are irreversible especially when a child consumes lead tainted water during his/her developmental years (birth to teenage years). My hope is that academicians will soon compile all those incidents wherein decisions were made by executives who did not have sufficient pertinent knowledge, but who only used the bottom line profitoriented approach without asking themselves 'is there any opportunity for unintended collateral damage?' Other examples come to mind: Here in Silicon Valley, a firm stored 'chlorinated hydrocarbon fat solvents' (used to remove all fats from certain electronic circuit boards). Corrosion leaks allowed these chemicals to taint local aquifers; that tainted water when drunk by pregnant women resulted in children with birth defects... and needless to say, that firm was declared bankrupt and is out of business. Today local gas stations now are required to store gasoline in double walled underground tanks used and continuously monitored for similar public health concerns. Another item: Transformers have toxic para-chloro-hydrocarbons (PCB's) which are very toxic, but which act as long-term heat removal insulating functions. I highly recommend that EO's readers, especially those living in U.S. Congressional District 17 read the article entitled “Bay Area Congressman Wants to Share The Wealth” (San Jose Mercury News, Sunday, 04.15.2018 (Business Section). Take that information into account when you decide who you want to return to Congress. Representative Rho Khanna merits a second two-year term (He replaced former Congressman Mike Honda) and has already displayed his 'core values'. Would hope that more members of Congress do the same.

La argumentación del Departamento

que millones de indocumentados votaron ilegalmente en estados demócratas como California, durante las elecciones presidenciales del 2016. “Es una pregunta mal intencionada que impacta no solamente a las familias indocumentadas, sino también a los residentes que tienen su residencia legal y su ciudadanía, y que tienen miembros de su familia que son indocumentados y que tendrían miedo”, sostiene el representante por Nueva York, Adriano Espaillat, el primer dominicano americano electo al Congreso de los Estados Unidos.

New research: Many millennials, even those employed or in education, find themselves marginalized PRINCETON, N.J., April 17, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ -- Tens of millions of America's nearly 80 million millennials, the diverse generation of Americans between roughly 16 and 34, are not positioned to thrive in today's world in terms of their level of human capital. This is not an attack on millennials; we are failing many in this generation. As a result, there are significant economic and social consequences for those on the margins—and for all of us, according to the latest research from ETS. Based on analysis of data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), the authors of "Too Big to Fail: Millennials on the Margins" show that nearly half of America's millennials— around 36 million—are attempting the transition to adult roles with low literacy skills, and more than half—about 46 million—are doing so with low numeracy skills. In addition, according to the report authors, ETS researchers Anita Sands and Madeline Goodman, millennials with low skills are more likely to be unemployed, out of the labor force, working in low-skill occupations and earning low incomes, and are less likely to have health-care coverage than those with higher skills. Moreover, they are less likely than their higher-skilled peers to have trust in others, be civically engaged, and feel as though they can influence government. The America millennials inherited was one undergoing a seismic shift. During the 1980s the United States was moving away from being a manufacturing economy with a fairly successful record of supporting a broad middle-class toward one increasingly reliant on a global supply chain. This shift impacted many facets of American life, not least of which is the nature of work and the need for higher level literacy and numeracy skills. There

economic

opportunities available to those lacking higher-level skills. Work that is available to those with lower skills often carries risks: Many hourly jobs in the burgeoning services sector—where so many with low skills find employment—do not provide health insurance, retirement benefits, sustainable wages, or even reliable hours. Making matters worse, while educational attainment rates—for both high school and many forms of postsecondary education— have increased, many young adults who have either obtained or are pursuing degrees still lack the necessary skills to advance economically. Furthermore, many students pursuing additional education are burdened by mounting debt for the post-secondary education they have received. "These findings should shake us to our foundation," said Sands. Goodman agreed saying, "They speak to our past in that they are in large part rooted in inequitable opportunities to acquire and develop human and, increasingly, social capital. And these findings speak to our future if we do not change course. Given what is known about how advantages and disadvantages compound over generations, the fate of so many millennials jeopardizes not only this critical cohort, but future generations." Fans sometimes run in to trouble when buying tickets and gear.

Risk Index (bbb.org/riskindex), online purchase scams were the riskiest scam to consumers in 2017. Furthermore, clothing purchases were one of the most common online purchase scams. More than 4,600 online purchase scams were reported to BBB Scam Tracker in 2017, up from around 2,800 reports in 2016. The majority of online purchase scams occur when a payment is made online in exchange for a good or service, but nothing is delivered.

In 2017, consumers nationwide filed nearly 3,900 complaints with BBB against ticket brokers and event ticket sales companies (up from 3,000 in 2016). The leading cause for complaints was problems with refunds and exchanges. Common complaints involve being unable to obtain refunds, poor customer service, and hidden fees. Buying jerseys, hats, and other gear can also lead to issues. According to the BBB

NAPSI If you’re like most people, you’re familiar with LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and HDL (high-density lipoprotein), particles in the blood that carry what is often referred to as “bad” and “good” cholesterol. There is, however, another lipoprotein particle you should be aware of: lipoprotein(a), also known as Lp(a), which poses a high risk of early cardiovascular disease. The Danger High levels of Lp(a) travel through the bloodstream and enter into the arteries, leading to gradual narrowing of the artery that can limit blood supply to the heart or brain. This increases the risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke and aortic stenosis. Lp(a) is the most prevalent genetic risk factor for coronary heart disease and aortic stenosis. One in five people have inherited high Lp(a)-63 million in the U.S. Anyone with a parent with elevated Lp(a) has a high risk of inheriting it. People with high levels of Lp(a) can be at risk even if they’re physically fit and have “normal” LDL and HDL cholesterol levels. Unfortunately, for many, the first sign of the disease is a heart attack or stroke. A Simple Test May Be The Answer The good news is a simple blood test measures Lp(a) concentrations, though it’s not included in most standard lipid panel tests. Current cholesterol guidelines miss 8 percent

of people who have a cardiovascular event whose only risk factor is high Lp(a). Knowing Lp(a) levels could be the first step in preventing up to 120,000 cardiovascular events in the U.S. every year. Prevention: If you have high Lp(a), work with your physician to develop an aggressive prevention plan. 3. The Santa Clara County Citizenship Collaborative will host its 28th Citizenship Day event on Saturday, April 21, 2018, to offer permanent residents initial legal assessment and citizenship application assistance in 14 languages. Agencies and volunteers will provide information about payment assistance programs for citizenship applications, as well as partial and full fee waivers offered by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Various organizations will provide information on legal services, resources and benefits for immigrants, such as English as a Second Language (ESL), adult education, food assistance and health care. Last year, close to 1,500 people attended a total of 19 citizenship orientations where more than 180 volunteers helped them. San Jose, Calif. The City of San Jose announced Tuesday April 17 that it had filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking an injunction prohibiting the U.S. Census Bureau from including a citizenship question on the 2020 Census. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s March 26 decision to include a citizenship question on the next Census will result in undercounting in San Jose, and the lawsuit notes that four former Census Bureau directors share the view that inquiring about citizenship status on the census would likely exacerbate privacy concerns and lead to inaccurate responses from non-citizens worried about a government record of their immigration status. As a result, San Jose and its residents are at risk of both lost representation and foregone federal funding for important public services. The Commerce Department’s actions also directly impede the City’s efforts to ensure that all San Jose residents are counted. In particular, the City has partnered with several community organizations to leverage new mapping and text messaging tools, and mobilize volunteers, to help ensure an accurate count of residents living in unconventional housing situations.

“In San Jose, everyone counts,” said Mayor Sam Liccardo. “Our values – and values held dear by millions of Americans – appear threatened by the Trump Administration’s political motives. Adding a citizenship question to the 2020 Census will stoke fears and depress participation in diverse cities like San Jose, threatening hundreds of millions in funding for health, education, and other critical services upon which our entire community depends.”

If you like the occasional can of tomato soup or diced pears, chances are you’re walking around with trace amounts of bisphenol A (BPA) in your bloodstream. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 90 percent of us are walking around with trace

amounts of this toxic synthetic chemical— commonly used as a constituent component in the epoxy resins lining the inside of cans, boxes and other food storage containers to prevent corrosion and breakages—in our bloodstreams. One of a class of so-called “hormone disrupting” or “endocrine mimicking” chemicals, BPA fools the body into thinking it’s the naturally occurring hormone estrogen. The result can be negative

effects on brain development, metabolism and the reproductive system. BPA exposure has also been linked to cancer, heart disease and other serious health disorders.

“Evidence suggests the developing fetus and young child are most at risk, but adolescents also appear uniquely vulnerable,” reports the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a leading non-profit research and advocacy group. Of course, the harm isn’t limited to children and teens; adults can suffer the ill effects of a lifetime of bio-accumulated BPA coursing through their veins as well.

If you’re not sure whether your favorite foods are at risk of containing BPA, you can search EWG’s Food Scores database to find out, and also to look for safer alternatives that don’t contain hormone disruptors.

According to EWG, we can cut down on the amount of BPA we ingest by steering clear of canned and processed foods and replacing them with fresh, frozen and dried options. Get your tomato soup from the hot prepared foods section of your local natural foods market or, better yet, make it yourself from scratch from organic ingredients. And instead of buying diced pears in a can, buy a real pear and dice it up yourself. “For those who cannot avoid foods in BPA-lined cans, rinsing the food in water may help lower the level of BPA in the food,” reports EWG, adding that rinsing cuts back on other unhealthy additives—such as sodium on beans or sweet

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned BPA in baby bottles, sippy cups and infant formula packaging, but the vast majority of us are still at risk. Environmental and health advocates are calling on the agency to ban BPA outright from any packaging materials that come into contact with foods, drinks or water, but so far officials don’t seem inclined to take the now ubiquitous chemical off the market completely. In 2014 and again in 2016, Democrats in Congress floated legislation that would have banned BPA and other potentially dangerous food additives in all food storage containers, but neither bill ever made it out of committee. Without any help from the government, then, it’s up to us to wean ourselves off of BPA by making smart choices about what we buy and what we eat.

Historic Changes to SNAP Could Mean More Hunger in Ohio

Mary Kuhlman Public News Service COLUMBUS, Ohio - Historic changes to one of the nation's foremost antihunger programs will be debated today in the U.S. House Agriculture Committee. After its release just last week, the House of Representatives' version of the 2018 Farm Bill is expected to move swiftly through the House, which is troublesome to hungerfighting groups including the Ohio Association of Foodbanks. That organization's executive director, Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, said the proposal imposes a strict work mandate for those receiving help through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). "Let me be clear," she said. "The current bill as it stands will increase hunger and contribute to escalating health-care costs instead of maintaining our country's long-term commitment to providing hunger relief and working to prevent hunger and food insecurity." Currently, SNAP recipients aged 18 to 49 without dependents are subject to work requirements. The legislation would expand the age to 59, and include parents with children ages 6 and older. Those who fall short of the 20-hour-per-week work requirement could lose benefits after one month. Supporters of the bill have maintained

that the changes will incentivize work and lift people out of poverty, while continuing support for those in need. According to Hamler-Fugitt, the majority of SNAP recipients already are employed, but often in lowpaying, part-time positions with inflexible hours that make it difficult to meet work requirements. She noted that some 375,000 Ohioans lost SNAP assistance after the state rejected a work-requirement wavier four years ago. "Many of them were not able to get employment. They could no longer stand in grocery store checkout lines in order to purchase food," she said. "Instead they've been forced into food bank, food pantry, and soup kitchen lines in order to feed themselves." The Farm Bill is renewed every five years, and Hamler-Fugitt noted that it typically has bipartisan support. "Democrats and Republicans, urban and rural interests all work together acknowledging and understanding the interconnectedness of our country's food system," she said. "This partisan farm bill undermines nutrition assistance for vulnerable Ohioans who are already living on the margins." The nearly 1.5 million Ohioans who rely on SNAP assistance receive, on average, about $120 a month to help buy groceries. Details of the legislation are online at agri-pulse.com.

A LOOK AT THE INCREDIBLES 2 The Pixar Sequel About A Family of Superheroes is Back and Full of Surprises

with the two in the scenes shown to the media. Elastigirl takes center stage in what we’ve seen so far, and specifically in a really great action scene where she is first trying out her Elasticycle in her new job as DevTech’s hired superhero. The high-tech motorcycle can come apart and move with her as she expands and contorts, and it is put on full display in the scene we were shown. It involved Elastigirl on a city chase on the streets weaving through traffic and on rooftops as she tries to stop Metroville’s new passenger filled mag lev train from coming to a crash after it mysteriously goes haywire on its maiden voyage.

One of the most mysterious aspects of the film is the new villain, which any good superhero film needs. The first film had the boy who grew up to be a crazed #1 fan in the form of Syndrome. Of course, since the fate of that villain was to be sucked into his plane’s engine due to the unfortunate fashion choice of having a cape, there needed to be someone else to face off against the Parr family in the sequel. Although we didn’t get to see much of the new villain, a bit has been revealed about him/her. At the end of the final Incredibles 2 trailer as a masked and goggle-wearing foe named The Screen Slaver. It is apparent from the trailer that this villain will use hypnosis, but to do what? And what is his/her motivations? That will be seen come April 27th.

After 14 years The Incredibles 2, a sequel to one of Pixar’s most beloved films will debut in theaters worldwide, continuing the story of the Parr family and their curious case of their ongoing superhero adventures. What poised creator Brad Bird and Pixar to step back into this retro futuristic 1960’s world of sharp architecture and “Mad Men” style clothing? According to Bird, it was not the money. “Many sequels are cash grabs. Money on the table is not why I get up in the morning, having people enjoy my movies 100 years from now is what gets me up in the morning. It makes no financial sense to wait this long, we have a story to tell.” The first Incredibles film came out in 2004 to near-universal acclaim, where the story of a family of superheroes and their friends took center stage. Voiced by Samuel L. Jackson, Holly Hunter, John Ratzenberger, Sarah Vowell and as the leader of the family, Craig T. Nelson as Mr. Incredible, the film centered on the Parr family of Bob, Helen, Violet, Dash and baby Jack-Jack. In the sequel they are back, and with minor changes like a new voice actor for Dash, and newcomers like Bob Odenkirk and Sophia Bush, the crew and story stick closely to the original. It takes place mere minutes after the original left off, where the Parr family, now all costumed up after learning to accept that a family is stronger together, (literally in their case), is ready to face off against the threat of the mole like Underminer and his giant drill-based vehicle which tunnels out of the ground into the streets of Metroville. A Second Adventure The boilerplate synopsis for the sequel reads: “Elastigirl springs into action to save the day, while Mr. Incredible faces his greatest challenge yet -- taking care of the problems of his three children.” In this simple statement, we are

introduced to the idea that Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), is going solo for most of the journey of the sequel. Although the film’s narrative has been kept mum up until now, new details have emerged from the Pixar team on what the course of the film will deal with. The first 22 minutes of footage dealt with picking up the film after the first Incredibles and the fate of the Underminer battle that closed the 2004 story and setting up the “superhero redemption” plot of the sequel.

The animation is similar to the original film for the first few minutes and subtly changes to the higher resolution and animation dynamics that come with 14 years of tech advancements, and the experience of 13 additional films under Pixar’s belt since The Incredibles’ release.

Las flores corresponden a varios aspectos del amor. Las advocaciones de la Virgen María, representan la compasión y la esperanza. Una casa es el reflejo de nuestro cuerpo físico. Un anciano suele reflejar nuestra sabiduría interior. Esto explica por qué a través de símbolos universales, los mitos de culturas distantes suelen tener grandes semejanzas. "The energy commission is trying to release regulations for microgrids,” she said. “PREPA will give lip service to renewable energy, but it's capital investment priorities are always to build more natural gas." Kunkel said she sees more gasfired power plants as a wasteful investment for an island where the population has fallen sharply since the storm. She noted there has been some growth in solar development on Puerto Rico, but that is in spite of - not because of - government policy.

This is National Retirement Planning Week, an effort by consumer advocates, educators and financial-service organizations to promote comprehensive retirement planning. However, according to Cathy Weatherford, president and chief executive of the Insured Retirement Institute, 42 percent of Baby Boomers have no retirement savings at all. Still, there are things they can do to prepare for the future. "It's never too late to sit down with a financial professional, assess where you are and see what you can do to improve your financial well being," she said. Weatherford added that many people have assets they had not taken into consideration that can contribute to

Edward “Ted” Smith was the captain of the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank on 15 April 1912. The story is legendary, so I won’t recount it here. But I’ve often thought that if a rookie captain were at the helm that fateful evening, the ship would be afloat to this day. This is pure speculation, of course, but I know several metaphoric Ted Smiths and they are captains of industry. Before we begin, I want to take a moment to assure you that I mean no disrespect to those who died or lost loved ones 106 years ago today. I recognize that this is a solemn anniversary of a tragic event. That said, Ted Smith has at least one more lesson to teach us. Captain Smith Having joined the White Star Line in 1880, by 1912 Ted Smith was one of the most experienced sea captains in the world. Just prior to his final command, he was captain of the Olympic (the world’s largest ship pre-Titanic). He had some trouble during that command: a serious and costly collision while docking in New York Harbor, and a subsequent major collision with the HMS Hawke, a British warship. Notwithstanding these unfortunate accidents, he was chosen to command the Titanic. The Story J. Bruce Ismay was, for all intents and purposes, Ted Smith’s boss. Ismay ran the International Mercantile Marine Company, which owned White Star Line and its flagship, the Titanic. So, even though Ted was the captain of the voyage, senior management was literally on board.

This managerial action set a chain of events in motion that should haunt every manager to this day. Ismay, the chairman, ignored a warning about a well-understood threat. An experienced captain, who had an even better understanding of the threat, allowed a dangerous condition to evolve. The story also tells us that the staff in the radio shack were so busy dealing with telegraph messages for passengers, they didn’t think additional iceberg warnings from the Mesaba or the Californian were important enough to share with the bridge. Why? Either the staff in the radio shack had not been apprised of the threat level or their job functions were aligned to incorrect priorities, or maybe they had been at sea for years and figured the guys on the bridge already knew it was cold outside and they were sailing in the North Atlantic. Regardless of the reason, the lack of clarity and specific governance of the incoming data resulted in tragedy.

Titanic was steaming at full speed when the baneful iceberg was sighted. It takes a long time to turn a big ship – too long in this case.

the staff in the radio shack did not have orders to surface important data about changes in threat levels. What-If What if Captain Smith, knowing the risk was too great, ignored Ismay’s order, reduced speed, and altered course to a more southerly route? What if the captain were on the bridge when the iceberg was spotted? What if the radio shack had delivered the data about the threat in a timely manner? The Lesson From my perspective, experience was a root cause of the Titanic disaster. Captain Smith didn’t want to hurt anyone; he wanted to do his job. His experience told him that even though he was in dangerous waters, they’d probably be OK. A rookie captain would have been on the bridge for the entire time, traveling at half speed with his binoculars glued to his or her eyes. Ismay, the chairman of the White Star Line, was in financial trouble because of earlier incidents and needed this voyage to be awesome. I don’t think he wished any harm on anyone. He just needed a big financial win. Ismay’s experience told him that a record-breaking North Atlantic passage in an unsinkable ship would be that win. A rookie chairman would have calculated every possible outcome and would have insisted that it was not “business as usual” on a maiden voyage under his or her rookie command. The staff in the radio shack was experienced. The staff knew that getting telegraph messages

APRIL 20 - 26, 2018 made passengers happy. Happy passengers is job one! Great for business at the unit level – at the enterprise level, not so much. Rookie radio shack operators would have run up to the bridge with incoming data that said, “Iceberg warning.” No inexperienced radio operator would ever sit on a warning message the operator had not seen before. In Conclusion The extraordinary end to the Titanic haunts us to this day. The story teaches us about ourselves: “Which character are you that evening?” Are you the hero who helped others to the lifeboats and went down with the ship? Are you one of the Strauses, who retired to their stateroom, got into bed fully clothed, and died in each other’s arms? Are you the musicians who played on deck to the very end? Are you the able-bodied adult man who took the seat of a woman or a child in one of the lifeboats? What would you do when faced with the choices these doomed souls had to make? While there are many insights to be gained from studying the fate of the Titanic, at least one is worthy of more exploration and discussion. I close with a blasphemous, disrespectful, and inappropriate metaphor that holds a deeper meaning for me than its usual application: Experience can serve us only if we transform it into wisdom. Three Fateful Issues 1. The captain respected the chain of command above him. If he suggested that the ship slow down, the chairman of the company either convinced him that maintaining full speed would be OK or gave him an unlawful order to put the ship and the passengers into harm’s way. 2. The captain not only agreed to maintain course and speed but left the bridge with the standing order “Maintain course and speed.” Most writings about the Titanic state that the bridge crew members were aware that there were icebergs in their path and they were on the lookout for them – but the ship was still traveling at top speed. 3.
