SUPPORT ENACTMENT OF THE HEALTHY CALIFORNIA ACT, SB 562

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR California's Senators Ricardo Lara and Toni Atkins have co-authored SB 562, 'The Healthy California Act' so as to enable California's residents to have single payer universal health care insurance coverage as a state program. The 2017-18 CA State Assembly needs to pass this bill despite vigorous opposition by the heath insurance lobbyists & special interests. National Nurses United (Southern CA) are supporting its enactment.

I encourage readers to google “The Healthy California Act, Senate Bill 562” bill text to experience the comprehensive and complicated nature of the health care services system.

Its purpose is to continue to provide CA's residents with coverage if and when the current Trump Administration and the Republican controlled Congress carry out the total repeal of the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare).

Senators Richardo Lara (D-Los Angeles) and Toni Atkins (DSan Diego) are the co-authors who already have the support of four senate colleagues and five

members of the State Assembly.

SB 562 was first published on March 29, 2017. The 2017-18 State Assembly needs to send the final form of this SB 562 bill to Governor Brown during this 2017-18 Assembly session.

CA's health care industry probably accounts for some 20% of its economic effort. Plan now to become a trained and licensed professional workers employed.

The health care industry contains some 2,600 different careers which cannot be sent offshore. As a state California has the constitutional 'states right' to ensure its residents have access to essential health care services which are covered by this proposed Insurance program. The proposed use of a 'public utility model' (not the 'competitive market model') is totally appropriate. Also, an emphasis on health care services which are available and priced without a 'profit burden' is appropriate.

When signed by Governor Brown, SB 562 will be “An act to add Title 22.2 (commencing with Section 100600) to the (CA) Government Code, relating to health care coverage, and making an appropriation therefor.” I encourage readers to google the bill text of The Healthy California Act, SB 562, to read the entire 'LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST' which describes the necessary integration and coordination of several existing federal and CA

state programs. Youth should note the extensive opportunities to be employed in the future (it is estimated some 2,600 jobs/careers already exist).

As amended, SB 562 (Lara & Atkins) The Healthy California Act will integrate, manage, and coordinate all existing federal law, federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), enacted various health care coverage market reforms that took effect January 1, 2014. PPACA required in each state by January to establish an American Health Benefit Exchange to facilitate the purchase of qualified health benefit plans by qualified individuals and qualified small employers.

The following is crucial supplemental information about the SB 562 healthcare act.

“PPACA defines a “qualified health plan” as a plan that, among other requirements, provides an essential health benefits package. Existing state law creates the California Health Benefit Exchange (aka: Covered California) to facilitate the purchase of qualified health plans by qualified individuals and qualified small employers.”

“Existing law such as 1975's Knox-Keene Health Care Service Plan Act provides for the licensure and regulation of health care service plans by the Department of Managed Health Care. Also for the regulation of health insurers

by the Department of Insurance; for the administration of Medi-Cal programs by the State Department of Health Care Services, under which qualified low-income individuals receive health care services. The MediCal program is governed in part and funded by federal Medicaid program provisions.”

This (SB 562) bill would make findings and declarations with regard to the availability and affordability of health care coverage and would state the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation that would establish a comprehensive universal single-payer health care coverage program and a health care cost control system for the benefit of all residents of CA.” “This (SB 562) bill, the Healthy California Act, would create the Healthy California program to provide comprehensive universal single-payer health care coverage and a health care cost control system for the benefit of all residents of CA. The bill, among other things, would provide that the program cover a wide range of medical services.” “(SB 562) would prohibit health care service plans and health insurers from offering health benefits or covering any service for which coverage is offered to individuals under the program, except as provided.”

“The bill would authorize health care providers, as defined, to collectively negotiate rates of payment for health care services, rates of payment for prescription and nonprescription drugs, and payment methodologies using 3rd-party representatives, as provided.

Existing constitutional provisions require that a statute that limits the right of access to the meetings of public bodies or the writings of public officials and agencies be adopted with findings demonstrating the interest protected by the limitation and the need for protecting that interest.”

“This (SB 562) bill would make legislative findings to that effect. It would require a majority vote in both the CA State Senate and the Assembly to send this bill to Gov. Brown for his signature...Then SB 562 would become law within the State of California. An initiating appropriation is required; The Fiscal Committee would perform oversight of implementation management.”

MÁXIMA RESPONSABILIDAD Por José López Zamorano La Red Hispana Desde esta semana la Corte Suprema de Justicia cuenta con sus 9 miembros reglamentarios, luego de la juramentación de Neil Gorsuch como el magistrado número 113 en sustitución del juez conservador Antonin Scalia, al cabo de un proceso marcado por divisiones entre republicanos y demócratas que derivó en la activación de la temida “opción nuclear”.

A partir de ahora, los magistrados al máximo tribunal del país podrán ser elegidos por mayoría simple en el Senado, lo que según algunos puede facilitar la llegada a la Corte de magistrados más conservadores durante la era Trump y revertir décadas de jurisprudencia en temas como la migración, los derechos civiles, protecciones laborales y la libertad reproductiva de las mujeres.

Los ojos de la nación y del mundo están por ello volcados sobre la figura de Gorsuch. Su maratónico proceso de confirmación fue un ejercicio intelectual donde reafirmó su apego a una interpretación textual de la Constitución, luego que los demócratas buscaron que dejara en claro que no sería una marioneta judicial del presidente en turno.

Se trata de un debate pertinente porque la Suprema Corte de Justicia podría revisar un tema clave para el futuro de millones de inmigrantes indocumentados en Estados Unidos. En junio pasado, la corte se enfrascó en un empate en el litigio sobre la constitucionalidad de Programa de Acción Diferida para Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) y su variante para adultos (DAPA).

Para muchos, una de las grandes interrogantes de la gestión de Gorsuch será

despejada cuando la Corte Suprema retome el asunto. Es por eso que durante sus audiencias de conformación adquirió tanta relevancia el fallo de Gorsuch a favor del indocumentado Hugo Rosario Gutiérrez Brizuela en 2016.

Los jueces de la Corte de Apelaciones, incluido Gorsuch, determinaron que el inmigrante tenía derecho a ajustar su estatus migratorio y buscar la residencia legal, aunque otro estatuto establecía que el indocumentado debía esperar un periodo de 10 años antes de iniciar el trámite. Gorsuch y la corte fallaron a favor del indocumentado.

El caso del inmigrante Rodríguez Brizuela no puede ser visto como el único referente de la postura que podría adoptar Gorsuch en migración, pero al menos muestra que el nuevo magistrado ha sido escrupuloso en preservar la independencia de las tres ramas del Estado: la ejecutiva, legislativa y judicial. Y en la actual coyuntura política, esas son buenas noticias.

FREE AND LOW COST SCREENING PROGRAM ALLEVIATES CHILDHOOD VISION ISSUES preschools.

Carlota del Portillo, April Nakayoshi, and Irene Kaufman Prevent Blindness Northern California Pre-school (ages 3-5) is an important time to check your child's vision. A young child's brain grows very fast, fed by what they see, hear and experience. Many preschoolers have undetected vision difficulties, making it harder to for them to learn, read or participate in activities in school.

Latino children have a higher prevalence of astigmatism, about 17% in Latino preschoolers, much higher than in African Americans (12.7%) and Caucasians (6.3%).

(Ophthalmology. 2011 February; 118(2): 284–293). Children don’t know they have vision difficulties, never having seen clearly, and many parents do not know the importance vision screening at this young age. One difficulty is astigmatism (astigmatismo) that can make vision blurry and distorted. If not treated early, it becomes a permanent disability—when treated early, it often is easily corrected with glasses.

Prevent Blindness Northern California (PBNC), brings See Well to Learn (SWTL), a free/low cost vision screening program, to preschools in Alameda, San Francisco and San Mateo counties. We’ve screened over a million children in the last fifty years and we’ve caught vision issues that even well-child checkups have missed. In fact, in one study, over 30 percent of the children who failed our high-tech vision screening and ended up needing glasses had previously passed a routine screening at their pediatrician’s office. Our ambition is to have all preschoolers, regardless of background or income, have their eyes screened annually across the Bay Area. This year the goal is to serve 9,000 children, more than 44% of them Latinos, at 210

Sanaa, a three-year old, didn’t seem interested in books or coloring at home, and sat very close to the television. Her mother thought this normal behavior for such a young child. After all, Sanaa had had her well-child check-ups where no vision problem had been diagnosed. See Well to Learn finds that over 60% children prescribed glasses on our mobile optometry clinic, the Eye Bus, had previously passed the vision portion of their well-child checkups.

Last spring, the See Well to Learn vision team came to Sanaa’s preschool and performed vision screenings right there in the classroom. When her mother came that afternoon to pick her up from school, the teacher told her that Sanaa had a vision problem and would need a full eye exam and possibly glasses.

“I was really surprised that Sanaa might need glasses – and I wondered how much it might cost,” her mother said. “But I learned that See Well to Learn would be bringing their Eye Bus back to the school in a few weeks, and that they’d give Sanaa a full eye exam and it wouldn’t cost us a thing.” The optometrist on the Eye bus explained that Sanaa had moderate astigmatism in both eyes, making vision blurry and distorted and preventing her from seeing well.

Sanaa’s glasses were delivered to her school and fitted on her. And there was an immediate difference in her behavior. “She’s more focused – she’s more interested in books and pictures now, and her teachers tell me she’s more engaged in the classroom,” her mother says gratefully.

In addition to the Eye Bus that goes to preschools to check for vision difficulties early, SWTL staff also talk to parents and the teachers about vision and learning, and how to be sure children wear their glasses.

In addition, parent education, in workshops or over the phone, is offered in English and Spanish.

TV MAY ACTUALLY DIE SOON – STAY TUNED and all of this sounds like stuff you’ve heard before. But we’re only talking about timing.

Traditional (linear) TV audiences are declining at a significant rate, and they are practically aged out of key demographics.

Cable customers are also declining. So, the question is when this shift will make a difference, not if.

For consumers — more choice, more fun. Consumers don’t care about content transport mechanisms or broadcast business models, they just want their content.

Shelly Palmer FANG (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, Google/ YouTube) is about to take a huge bite out of traditional network TV (ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox), and the media business will never be the same.

To understand how profound the implications of the recently announced NFL on Amazon Prime or YouTube TV are, it may help to understand the economic engine that drives traditional commercial television.

The goal of the commercial television business is to package a specific, targeted audience and sell it to the highest bidder.

The more precise the targeting, the higher the fee, and of course, the bigger the targeted audience, the bigger the fee.

TV Is Data Poor Because the broadcast television industry is data poor (it only offers metrics about itself), this model has never been a complete solution for brand or lifestyle advertisers.

In practice, an advertiser needs to translate ratings and demographic information from Nielsen into knowledge and insights it can link to its KPIs (key performance indicators).

Because content is distributed across so many non-TV platforms, this process gets more difficult every day. How effective was your broadcast TV buy? Was there an increase in sales that could be attributed to it? Could we have spent this portion of our advertising budget differently?

FANG Is Data Rich There are four data sets that help define each of us: attention, consumption, passion, and intention. While traditional broadcast TV tries to measure or attribute some of these to TV viewership, FANG has actionable data that drives KPIs. Facebook knows what you are paying attention to. You post and share the things you care about, and your Facebook profile makes your attention actionable.

Amazon knows what you consume and what you’re thinking about consuming. If you’ve

bought it or are planning to buy it, Amazon knows it and can act on that data.

For advertisers — Brands have never wanted to buy CPMs (cost per thousand impressions) or GRPs (gross rating points); they want to sell stuff. The data-rich FANG and other tech giants are offering data that can be turned directly into sales.

For Networks — It’s just a matter of time before media without actionable data will be impossible to monetize. Can traditional TV catch up? Adapt or die!

TARTA DE CREMA DE FRESAS CON PISTACHOS

Es por eso nos gustaría ofrecerte la receta de Tarta de Crema de Fresas con Pistachos, la cual incluye Wonderful Pistachios y fresas.

La combinación de estos dos ingredientes es simple pero deliciosa, y además es la mejor manera de darse un gusto sin sentirse demasiado culpable.

Este postre viene cargado de sabor gracias a la excelente combinación que conforman los pistachos y las fresas. Está cargado de nutrientes, gracias a las proteínas, fibra y grasas saludables que contienen los pistachos, y vitamina C y antioxidantes que contienen las fresas. ¡Nada mejor que endulzar el paladar con un postre delicioso y bueno para ti!

Tiempo de preparación: 30 minutos | Tiempo para servir: 45 minutos | Porciones 8 Ingredientes: • ½ taza de Wonderful Pistachios No Salt, sin cáscara • taza de harina • ½ cucharadita de sal • 1/3 taza de manteca • 2-4 cucharadas de agua helada • 5 yemas de huevo, a temperatura ambiente • ¾ taza de azúcar • 3 cucharadas de maicena • 1½ tazas de leche tibia • ½ cucharadita de extracto de vainilla • 1 cucharada de mantequilla sin sal • 1 cucharada de crema de leche • ½ cucharadita de cáscara de naranja • ¼ cucharadita de cáscara de limón • 1/8 cucharadita de sal • 4 tazas de fresas picadas • Miel

Preparación: 1. En un tazón mediano, mezcla la harina y la sal. Utilizando un tenedor agrega la manteca y mezcla hasta que parezcan migajas gruesas.

2. Espolvorea la mezcla con agua helada (una cucharada a la vez), mientras mezclas suavemente con un tenedor. Continua agregando el agua hasta que la maza esté lo suficientemente húmeda para formar una bola.

3. Forma un rectángulo con la masa, la cual debe medir media pulgada de grosor. Extiende la masa con un rodillo previamente enharinado sobre una superficie también ligeramente enharinada. Pon la masa extendida sobre un molde para tartas y presiona suavemente en el fondo y a los lados del molde sin estirar.

Recorta los bordes de la masa si es necesario.

4. Pincha la parte inferior y lateral de la masa con un tenedor. Hornea a 450°F de 9 a 12 minutos o hasta que se dore. Déjalo enfriar sobre una rejilla.

5. Con una batidora eléctrica, bate las yemas de huevo y el azúcar a medio-alto durante 4 minutos o hasta que espese. Reduce la velocidad a bajo y añade la maicena. Con el mezclador en bajo, vierte lentamente la leche tibia en la mezcla.

6. Vierte la mezcla en una cacerola mediana y cocina a fuego lento, revolviendo constantemente hasta que la mezcla espese durante unos 5 a 7 minutos. Cuando la crema comience a hervir, bate enérgicamente durante 2 minutos y cambia a una batidor manual y mezcla vigorosamente. Agrega la vainilla, mantequilla, crema de leche, la ralladura de naranja y de limón, y la sal. Pon una envoltura de plástico directamente sobre la crema y refrigera hasta que se enfríe 7. Esparce la crema sobre cada caparazón de tarta y cubre con rodajas de fresas y pistachos.

COUNTY ASKS FEDERAL COURT TO BLOCK EXECUTIVE ORDER Order would ultimately strip Santa Clara County of all federal funds

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – At a hearing before a federal judge this morning, the County of Santa Clara urged the court to prevent enforcement of President Trump’s unconstitutional Executive Order that strips all federal funding from the County and other jurisdictions deemed “sanctuary jurisdictions”—the first such hearing in the country. The County filed a motion for emergency relief because of the immediate harms and coercion caused by the President’s January 25, 2017 Executive Order. In a related lawsuit, the City and County of San Francisco will also argue for injunctive relief before the federal court today.

The Executive Order does not define the term “sanctuary jurisdiction,” leaving jurisdictions across the State and country at imminent risk of losing their federal funds. The stakes for these states, cities, and counties could not

be higher, especially for jurisdictions like the County that serve as a safety net for those with the greatest needs.

The Executive Order would deprive the County of approximately 35% of its annual funds—or nearly $1.7 billion per year. This funding is dedicated to providing essential health, welfare, and safety services for the County’s 1.9 million residents. These services include life-saving medical care provided by the only safety-net hospital in the County (Santa Clara Valley Medical Center); basic food and nutrition benefits for infants, children, families, and seniors; housing and community development; highway planning and construction; and security, emergency response, and counter-terrorism efforts.

“Withdrawal of federal funding on this scale is unprecedented and the consequences would

be catastrophic—potentially life-threatening,” said Dave Cortese, President of the Board of Supervisors. “We urge the court to act fast to protect the County from the Executive Order’s clear overreach and harms our communities now face.”

The Office of the County Counsel, joined by pro bono counsel Keker, Van Nest & Peters LLP, filed the County’s motion challenging the Executive Order as an unconstitutional attempt to force state and local governments to assist the Trump Administration in executing its federal immigration priorities.

While immigration enforcement is the Executive Order’s current target, the County argues that the Trump administration could seek to withhold federal funding to coerce a range of policy outcomes, from women’s health to education. The motion also asserts that the Executive Order violates the separation of powers and the Fifth Amendment’s Due Process Clause.

“We are seeking court action to halt the President’s effort to coerce the County, and countless other jurisdictions, into being deputized as federal immigration enforcers,” said County Counsel James R. Williams.

“The U.S. Constitution’s Tenth Amendment protects state and local governments from

just that kind of compulsion and subversion of local policies.”

“Santa Clara County’s policies were created to ensure public safety,” said County Executive Jeffrey V. Smith, M.D., J.D. “When fear permeates our streets, our schools, and our hospitals, we all stand to lose.”

Fifteen amicus briefs representing more than 240 individuals and entities were filed in support of the County of Santa Clara’s motion.

Supporters included the State of California; cities, counties, sheriffs and police chiefs from around the United States; school districts representing over one million California students; civil and immigrant’s rights groups from across the nation; unions; communitybased organizations, law scholars, non-profit service providers, technology companies, and others. No briefs were filed in opposition to the County’s motion.

Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the lawsuit names President Trump and a number of Administration officials. A nationwide injunction would prohibit the Trump Administration from withholding federal funds from any of the states, cities, and counties targeted under the Executive Order.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HONOR COUNTY 9-1-1 DISPATCHERS, DISPATCHERS OF THE YEAR

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF.— As part of “Communications Dispatchers Week in Santa Clara County,” County 9-1-1 Dispatchers and two County Dispatchers of the Year were honored for their critical role in public safety on April 10th.

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors presented a proclamation to County 9-1-1 Communications Director Jason Bivens, and Dispatchers of the Year Pedro Yanez and Brie Silva at the Board Chambers in San Jose.

“This is an opportunity to honor the women and men who serve as our public safety dispatchers, and who are the voice at the other end of the 9-1-1 call assisting distraught callers,” said Board President Dave Cortese. “I am proud to honor our County Communications Department and the Dispatchers of the Year.”

The County Communications Department operates a consolidated (law, fire, and medical) emergency communications center that is staffed by 130 employees, including 99 dispatchers who answer approximately 42,180 calls per month, 59 calls per hour, 1,406 calls in a 24-hour period, and 506,164 calls per year.

“County 9-1-1 Dispatchers are an essential link between the community and first responders,” said County Communications Director Jason Bivens. “Those of us working with them every day understand just how difficult their job is and we greatly appreciate their competency and professionalism.”

Dispatchers are responsible for answering “9-1-1” and “Non-Emergency” calls for service in the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County, and the contract cities of Saratoga, Cupertino and Los Altos Hills. They provide advanced pre-arrival instructions to callers

in distress and process emergency medical service calls for several contract cities throughout the county.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff ’s Office, Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency rely on County Communications as their primary dispatch center. It is also the regional coordinator for mutual aid, and acts as a backup to all other 9-1-1 centers in the county. The department has been recognized by the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch as an Accredited Center of Excellence in Emergency Medical Dispatching since 2002 by providing callers reporting medical emergencies with appropriate physicianapproved medical instruction while help is on the way.

Emergency Dispatchers are often referred to as the “first-first” responders, as they have the first contact with callers and are the voice behind the radio when police, firefighters and medical personnel are responding to emergency situations.

“If you’ve ever been the victim of a crime, been in a collision, reported a fire or needed emergency medical help, you’ve probably called 9-1-1 and been helped by a dispatcher,” said Supervisor Mike Wasserman. “These courageous professionals are sometimes the forgotten component and unsung heroes of public safety.”

Telecommunicators Week began in California in 1981, and 10 years later in 1991, Congress introduced a resolution recognizing the official name of the week as "National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week." Every year, the second week of April marks a time to remember the critical role that 9-1-1 dispatchers play in helping to keep the community safe.

Her unfortunate experiences as a child shaped her into the artist she become by portraying her experiences through her art.

Her piece “Undocumented Flower”, a mural that portrays the U.S.- Mexico border with colorful big flowers on both sides represents the people on both sides of the border, as well as her experience without her dad and the role that nature had on her when growing up in the fields.

“Every winter we would go pick in the imperial valley, and I’d rolled up in the fields but you know what? It’s ok because I’m in the fields and this is earth, the true nature of our land and this land is so beautiful, it doesn’t judge… so I started talking to nobody but the land and the wind,” Jimenez Underwood said.

Jimenez Underwood knew she wanted to be the first one in the family to get her high school diploma and eventually attend college when she realized she was the only Mexican in her class that could read perfectly.

Consuelo plans to continue showcasing her artwork in different museums throughout the U.S. and she’s currently using her weaving loom to work on a “rebozo” that has a unique meaning and unique textiles, such as fabric, yarn and synthetic fibers that distinguishes from the rest.

Consuelo Jimenez Underwood is an artist that has broken barriers with her unique artwork.

For over 30 years she has been recognized for her fiber artwork which has been displayed in the most important museums of the country, such as, the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She is one of the few awardees of the prestigious NALAC Award, from the nonprofit National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures which awards Latino artists from all states.

However, she did not always want to be an artist. Before enrolling in the Art Undergraduate program at San Diego State University, she wanted to study Religion but she realized that what she wanted was the freedom to express herself without anyone telling her not to do so.

Therefore, she knew she could find that freedom through art.

She went from using a paintbrush and

pigments to using a needle and thread to express herself through art. At the same time “empowered by the voices of my indigenous maternal ancestors, I began to cross the intellectual borders that separated the hand and the mind(craft), from the spirit (fine art)” Jimenez Underwood said in her biography.

Jimenez Underwood was born in Sacramento to a fourth-generation Californian mother, her father was one of the first Braceros from Mexico to come to the United States. Her father would cross the border back and forth until she was 10 years-old. This childhood experience led her to create her work collection titled “Borderlines.”

“I think the reason why I’m very different is because I’m one of the few that has survived to this rebel society that actually illegally crossed my dad. [I] smuggled him when I was 3 years-old, putting my feet over his body with a tarp on top of him covering him in the back seat,” Jimenez Underwood said.

LOS ANGELES - Big crowds of protesters took to the streets in a dozen California cities this past Saturday April 15th, and in hundreds of sister marches across the nation. They demanded that President Donald Trump release his income-tax returns, as Americans prepare to file theirs by the deadline on Tuesday April 18th.

Before the election, then-candidate Trump promised to release the returns but then reneged, claiming voters don't care that much about what's in them.

Delia Brown, co-organizer of the Los Angeles march, disagrees. She says the public deserves transparency and accountability from the White House.

"We think that there are conflicts of interest that would be exposed," she said. "We know from his sons' assertions that he has a lot of business dealings with Russia, but we have no way of knowing what they are or how deep they go."

More than 22,000 people registered to attend the L.A. event, which included a rally

Brown says at the marches, speakers will call for tax fairness, measures to fight income inequality, and a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, that allows corporations to contribute vast sums to political campaigns without full disclosure.

"What the people desire doesn't stand a chance next to the big money that corporations have to push their agendas forward," she added. "The American people's voice is lost as soon as corporations are allowed to have great influence over who is elected, and what kinds of legislation is passed."

The marchers are also pressing for an investigation into whether President Trump continues to profit from income streams tied to foreign powers, which would be a violation of the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution.

energía cuando estoy en el escenario y veo la audiencia, la gente aplaudiendo, se siente, de verdad que si. ¿Que parte o partes tomas en la producción?

Yo soy parte del 'ensemble', soy bailarina, yo haga todo la parte (de) coreografía, y también por ejemplo hay una escena donde le hago de ‘waitress’, un tipo de escena en un club. Tengo apariciones en unas escenas pero mi rol más fuerte para mi es una de las bailarinas principales. ¿Los más divertido?

Tengo varias cosas, por ejemplo yo como que separo mi momento en el escenario con mi vida fuera del escenario. Cuando estoy en el escenario estoy viviendo literalmente mi sueño. Como una meditación de dos horas, que dura el show. Super enfocada, viviendo mi sueño, es como un enfoque único, una pasión que siento. Cuando estoy afuera del escenario lo que más me gusta a parte de eso es la experiencia que estoy viviendo conociendo diferentes ciudades. En el tour también con las personas del elenco todas son como una familia entonces cuando no tenemos show, o durante el día cuando estamos libres, vamos todos en familia y

Adelante hablamos con Alejandra sobre sus experiencias con la producción.

Hola Alejandra, gracias por la entrevista.

Puedes hablar un poco sobre como llegaste ha involucrarte con “The Bodyguard”?

Bueno yo empecé a bailar muy pequeña de alrededor de los siete, o ocho años, y estuve en programas de televisión de niños en mi país en Venezuela. Estuve en diferentes programas hasta que cumpli 22 años. Me mude a los estados unidos y estaba en Los Angeles entrenando, y en Los Angeles es mucho más comercial. Muchos video clips, 'backup dancers' y conciertos. Estuve aya en Los Angeles como casi diez años y yo quería algo mas, quería crecer como artista, como bailarina. Y decidí moverme a New York porque había momentos cuando viajaba a New York y veía estos shows en Broadway y me inspiraba. Y dije, ¿yo quiero hacer esto, que tengo que hacer pues? (Y) Moverme a New York y entrenar muy fuerte fue lo que hice. Entrene mucho y empecé a audicionar para musicales. Y cuando me moví a New York mi sorpresa fue que no solo hay que bailar, hay que cantar y actuar. Vas a entrenar con los tres, baile, canto, y actuación. Y bueno fui a diferentes

audiciones y la última que hice fue esta, la del guardaespalda, el 'Bodyguard'. Fueron tres semanas de audición, fue fuerte, fue un reto bien fuerte para mi personalmente. Y yo quería mucho este trabajo y di lo mejor de mi por cuatro semanas y pues, aquí estoy.

conocemos lugares, vamos a museos, vamos a las películas, al cine, a los restaurantes, conocemos mucha gente, y es como en general, realmente estoy disfrutando todo cada dia.

Por qué razón(es) sera un buen tiempo/ experiencia para la gente ver The Bodyguard?

El entretenimiento va ser de 100%, si tienen algun problemita, todo se le va a olvidar en ese momento. Desde que entren al teatro.

Van a estar tan metidos en la obra, desde que empieza, porque empieza, no te voy a decir el comienzo..pero empieza bien dramático, desde el primer segundo que empieza la obra ya la gente se agarra. Se mete tanto en la obra, es como si están dentro, si fueran parte. La gente también, de lo que yo escucho, ríe de carcajadas, se asusta.

No lo puedes controlar. Esas dos horas se van a olvidar cualquier de circunstancia. Y muchas personas van a salir muy inspiradas de allí, especialmente las personas que les guste el arte.

¿CÓMO SE ORIGINAN LAS PESADILLAS?

problemas, miedos y defectos. Por lo tanto no deben alarmarnos en demasía, por el contrario, debemos prestarles la atención necesaria para que el mensaje que nos revelen, nos ayude en el avance de nuestra propia evolución como seres humanos.

Tipos de Pesadillas Existen las pesadillas causales, las pesadillas persistentes y las premonitorias.

Las pesadillas causales son parte de la experiencia onírica de todo individuo y aunque no sean provocadas por una causa física, un serio problema o un temor anunciado u oculto, sí pueden ser fiel reflejo de la percepción al observar imágenes grotescas durante la vigilia. Una película de terror puede ser la causa primordial de una pesadilla causal, especialmente en los infantes.

Las pesadillas persistentes, suelen tener su origen en un miedo profundo, en una afección nerviosa o en un síndrome post traumático.

La mayoría de soldados que se enfrentan en una guerra experimentarán pesadillas sobre ésta a lo largo de su vida. Cuando la

Las pesadillas premonitorias son la respuesta del inconsciente ante una situación que no se ha develado en la vigilia y por ello el cerebro envía el mensaje al individuo para alertarle ante un suceso dramático que está por ocurrir.

Muchos le temen a la pesadilla y cuando ésta les infunde pavor creen que el augurio habrá de cumplirse. Realmente esto sucede en pocas ocasiones. Cuando una pesadilla le aflija al punto de afectarle física o anímicamente, lo que debe hacer es asistir a una misa o servicio religioso, de ese modo logrará el alivio necesario y anulará místicamente cualquier presagio de infortunio.

La pesadilla premonitoria suele presentarse dos o tres veces en un corto período de tiempo. Si al recordarla le palpita el corazón, entonces actúe, investigue el significado y cerciórese de no confundirla con una pesadilla causal. Rezar plegarias, salmos u oraciones antes de dormir suele ser un remedio efectivo para evitar tener pesadillas.

La angustia, el sufrimiento y la desesperación que sufrimos al experimentar una pesadilla suele ser tenebrosa, a tal grado que en muchas ocasiones despertamos exaltados, gritando o sollozando, y un gran sentimiento de zozobra nos embarga en ese momento.

La pregunta que solemos hacernos es ¿porqué ocurre? ¿cuál es la causa fundamental que hace al subconsciente reflejar en nuestros sueños esa descarga de imágenes tenebrosas?

Existen diversos factores que suelen ser responsables de la aparición de la pesadilla durante el sueño como por ejemplo: los sentimientos de culpa, los remordimientos, el temor a lo desconocido, los problemas sentimentales, la ausencia de la buena salud, los altibajos económicos o la pérdida de un ser querido. Todas estas circunstancias que ocurren durante la vigilia se transforman durante el reposo en imágenes diversas cargadas de un alto contenido de miedo que el subconsciente presenta al soñador como la causa y efecto de su propio pavor.

El comer a altas horas de la noche e irse a dormir casi de inmediato también se asocia a la producción de pesadillas, debido a que el cerebro hace un mayor esfuerzo para conducir la digestión y al mismo tiempo procurar el descanso nocturno.

Para aquellas personas que padecen de trastornos como la bulimia y la anorexia,

el problema suele profundizarse ya que el sentimiento de culpa suele causar un incremento de imágenes grotescas durante el sueño. Sin embargo, no siempre que se come en forma desproporcionada en horario inconveniente suele ser causante de pesadillas, tiene que existir un profundo sentimiento de preocupación para que se fusione con la doble actividad del cerebro para que ello suceda.

Quienes usan sustancias prohibidas o somníferos suelen alterar la actividad normal en el sueño profundo. Si se utilizan píldoras para dormir a largo plazo casi siempre se necesitará una dosis mayor para poder conciliar el sueño. Cuando el cerebro reciente la falta de dichas sustancias a la que ha sido sometido, suele presentarse la ausencia del sueño y cuando éste se consigue lo más probable es que se experimenten pesadillas.

Vale la pena mencionar que existen personas que afirman que el uso moderado de la marihuana les ayuda a conciliar un sueño prolongado y sin sobresaltos.

Cuando la pesadilla se torna persistente y comienza a afectar emocionalmente al individuo, es indicio que existe en su interior un pavor profundo que puede ser provocado por el miedo a perder algo o alguien que considere sumamente valioso en su vida. Por otra parte se necesitará una evaluación psiquiátrica para determinar si las constantes pesadillas forman parte de un trastorno nervioso.

LATINOS FROM THE FIELDS TO THE FILM INDUSTRY

Friday, March 31 marked the birthday and holiday of Cesar Chavez who began organizing the Mexican American community in the 1950s and in 1962 launched the National Farm Workers Association (later to become the United Farm Workers) which would be his legacy. While the rights and dignity of migrant farm laborers was his message for the next 30 years until his death in 1993 the Civil Rights leader believed his message transcended that one issue.

In a 1984 speech to the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco he described his movement as a people’s cause. He concluded his speech by saying, “You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride.

You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed.”

Moving beyond the agricultural fields of the Central Valley and across America, Latinos today have seized upon that social change by taking on roles once considered inaccessible in all facets of society. From the political arena to the corporate boardroom, from the Silicon Valley startups to science and technology Latinos are making great strides.

However, in one industry, film, Latinos still trail behind other minorities. In 2015 Latinos got only 5% of speaking roles in the top 100 films that year. In TV Latinos got only 2% of roles according to a UCLA study.

Yet, ironically, Latinos account for 1 out of every 4 movie tickets purchased, are the largest ethnic group in California and make up 1 out of 5 Americans. While Latinos are woefully underrepresented in Hollywood as a whole there are some, including Latina film directors, who are making strides to close that Latino gap in media.

LISSETTE FELICIANO One such trendsetter is Lissette Feliciano,

a native of San Francisco whose short film, “With Children”, recently premiered at the Cinequest Film & Virtual Reality Festival in San Jose. Lissette was born to a musician father and an entrepreneur mother. Her film, “With Children”, is based on the story of her pregnant mother and the hardship she encountered looking for housing while with a child on the way.

This film was very personal for you. What was your mom’s initial reaction when she learned you would be telling her story?

She was very supportive. Her entire thing in life is about inspiring people to set high goals and reach them. She came from a very impoverished background and had everything against her but with hard work and sacrifice she's been able to make something of herself. She always said, “Look mija, if I could do it with nothing, you who were born here, have the language, have the education, what can you not do?"

Hearing something like that just gives you a sense of accountability for your actions and the mark you want to leave in this world. And it's a message kids don't hear that often and she really instilled in me the passion to spread that message to as many kids as possible.

Especially Latino kids who don't always get told that they're important, that they can make a difference, and that they have an accountability to change the script around the world's perception of their potential.

As a Bay Area-raised Latina what has been the audience response to your film from nonLatino audiences?

I wrote the script color blind. There's really nothing in the script that signals "this is a Latino story". Even the names, there's a dad character that's named Matthew in the script but in the scene while we were acting it I told the actor the incredible Gabriel Sloyer, you know what I think I'm going to call you Teo which is what my mom would have called you. And he was like "yeah!"

The finished product obviously has a Latin

flavor in the music, motifs, etc. but nothing about her struggle is centered only about Latinos. This is the story of any woman struggling to be taken seriously which is what we're still fighting for in 2017, she just happens to have olive skin in this film. If it happens to look Latino and have a little bit of Spanish in that's because of me and my influences but the story is universal. Have you ever had a dream? Have you ever been kept from it for reasons that were barely reasons? Has the perception around you and what you can achieve kept you somehow from living up to your god given potential?

Those are universal struggles. So I've had a great response from non-Latino audiences because the film is for anyone who's had a dream and had to struggle for that dream.

That as a filmmaker is what my mission is: to blur the divides between race, gender, etc. and help the world connect again to a truth I think we know as kids but lose as adults: Our circumstances might be different but our souls are the same. That's a message we need now more than ever.

What is next for you after completing your short film?

I'm working to make “With Children” into a feature film. It's going to be an Erin Brockovich meets Rocky story. Where it's just obstacle after obstacle and the resilience of this woman that says, "come at me, I don't care what you do to me, I'm going to stay in the ring”. That's something my mom told me growing up: sacrifice, work hard, you don't have to win right away but you better believe you have to stay in the ring.

ROMINA SCHWEDLER Another Latina film director on the rise, this time from New York but originally Argentina, is Romina Schwedler. Her short film, “The Visit”, has already received awards for best short film by a woman at film festivals. In “The Visit” not all is as it first appears and tells the story of mental health issues played out through an encounter between a man and his aging mother. The man’s interactions with his mother while at a hospital are juxtaposed against a series of flashbacks he has experienced. Romina’s film also premiered at the Cinequest Film and Virtual Realtity Festival and is currently making the film festival circuit.

You directed two micro-short films already.

What are the challenges making this recent short film?

“The Visit” was definitely my most demanding production yet. In many ways I feel like this was my first film. With “The Visit” I was definitely challenged as a director, as a writer, and as a producer. Once I knew that June Squibb and Sean Maher (the actors in the film) were on board, I wanted to make sure that they would have a positive experience working on the film, especially since they were both working for scale!

As a director, I think my biggest challenge was the last day of shooting because that day I had my full cast, my full crew, accumulated sleep deprivation, a last minute head concussion, and the added obstacle of filming in a hospital that’s in operation.

Originally from Buenos Aires, have your films been shown there? How would you describe the film viewing audience in Argentina compared to the audiences in the USA? I’m grateful and lucky to say that I have very loyal fans back home, and I feel bad sometimes because everything I’ve directed so far has been in English.”The Visit” I have not taken to Argentina yet. Several people have asked me when the film will be playing there and I truly can’t wait for that to happen so now I’m getting ready to submit to festivals there.

How does being a woman filmmaker influence your style of telling stories?

I think everyone’s way of telling stories is different, whether you’re a man or a woman.

I do believe that as a woman I might have an easier time envisioning a woman as a protagonist for a role that might otherwise be thought of for a man. Also, shining a light on women in key roles throughout history and in today’s society has a certain appeal to me and most women directors.

You have had an interesting journey in the arts and seem to have “accidentally” gotten into the film making business. What do you find most appealing about making films and telling stories?

I enjoy filmmaking so much because it’s the one discipline where I get to use everything I’ve ever learned throughout my career, as a musician, as an artist, as an actress. This is where it all comes together. I love the magical process of turning an idea into a tangible piece of work that then gets shared with an audience who will have diverse experiences and reactions to it. I also love the powerful medium of film and how we as filmmakers are able to make a difference, to change someone’s life, to make someone think about something they wouldn’t have thought of had they not watched your film.

What is next for you after completing your short film?

My team and I are having an amazing time accompanying the film throughout its festival circuit but I might not be able to be present at all of our upcoming screenings because I’m about to begin pre-production for my first feature film. I’m very excited about this because this is an Argentinean film. It’s not my script. I was hired to direct it but this is a special project to say the least because not only do I love the script and the team I’ll be working with but I also get to work where I grew up and make my first film in Spanish so I can’t wait.

He founded the non-profit Water Defense in 2009, and later went on to join engineering professor Mark Jacobson, banker and solar executive Marco Krapels and filmmaker/activist Josh Fox to launch The Solutions Project, which aims to help move the U.S. to 100 percent renewable energy. He has also been active alongside the Standing Rock Sioux in fighting the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota.

Some other movie stars for the environment include Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Daryl Hannah, Pierce Brosnan, Charlize Theron, Matt Dillon, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Will Ferrell, Tom Hanks and George Clooney. At least you can feel better about going to the movies now that you know the stars on the screen are using some of the money they are making at your expense to help the planet.
