“BIG BROTHER” MAY BE A CORPORATION; NOT BIG GOVERNMENT”
Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR During the 1950's I read, with great interest, George Orwell's book entitled “1984” published during 1949, which projected the powerful influence of 'Big Government' upon individuals. The term 'Big Brother' is the personification of the control, influence and power of the future nation-state as conceptualized by George Orwell in 1984. Two versions of Big Brother were possible: A) The authoritarian leader (who could be a 'good guy' or a very abusive dictator) of a state or movement; and B) an oligarchy (small elite leadership group) in control of an all- powerful government or organization, which monitors and directs people's lives, careers, and actions. What is lost is the PRIVACY of an individual able to make personal 'free will decisions' and choices. Many today have some concern about the recent demonstration that 'very large data bases' can be scrutinized and analyzed using current computer's very high-speed capability. Google, Facebook, YouTube (and several other firms) are able to collect detailed data in massive quantities. Personal habits and traits can be used to collect similar personal profile categories used to facilitate targeting potential consumers. Very likely, the alleged Russian intrusion into the recent 2016 presidential election was based upon their capacities to determine communities whose voters might be influenced by presenting certain
perspectives at the right time using 'fake news' and/or 'alternative facts'. This surreal possibility cannot be ignored. Profit oriented firms have been looking for this sort of information technology (IT) which may be augmented by 'Artificial Information' (AI). This quickly lends itself to various forms of propaganda which was first used by Adolph Hitler's Nazi regime successfully.

A friend, who chooses to remain anonymous, provided the following 'Google-Pizza' conversation, which illustrates what is possible when computers are able to create 'personal profiles' using documented habits, traits and inclinations, we all possess and demonstrate daily. Do read it in its entirety because what is presented is funny; and, upon reflection, may be viewed as sinister when used by those whose goal is to be the oligarchists who 'control and manipulate' people. Profit oriented firms are undoubtedly using some level of this ability to place an individual into a 'defined cohort' based upon factual information which is documented every time an individual does something documented when using credit cards. Over a span of time, the following may become possible:
GOOGLE: May I suggest that this time you order a pizza with ricotta, arugula, sun-dried tomatoes and olives on a whole wheat gluten-free thin crust?
GOOGLE: According to our caller ID data sheet, the last 12 times you called you ordered an extralarge pizza with three cheeses, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms and meatballs on a thick crust. CALLER: OK! That’s what I want ...
CALLER: What? I detest (vegetarian pizzas)! GOOGLE: Your cholesterol (level) is not good, sir. CALLER: How the hell do you know! GOOGLE: Well, we cross-referenced your home phone number with your medical records. We have the result of your blood tests for the last 7 years.

I'm sick to death of Google, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and all the others (doing?) I'm going to an island without internet, cable TV, where there is no cell phone service and no one to watch me or spy on me. GOOGLE: I understand sir, but you need to renew your passport first. It expired 6 weeks ago... (Now, we will send you your usual order within 40 minutes, O.K.?”)

Reference is made to the San Jose Business Journal, April 20, 2018, page 6 where an article entitled “Lawyer; Facebook Ignored Data Concerns” presents the choice made by Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg in order to compete effectively; maximize cash flow (and profits) needed for dominant growth. The issues of digital privacy and cyber-security of personal information were considered in the beginning, but later received lower priority. (Ms.) Parry Aftab, esq., who was a former member of Facebook's 'International Safety Advisory Board', was an advocate for 'personal data privacy issues' for seven years until 2016. She called herself 'a squeaky wheel'.

According to our database, you only purchased a box of 30 cholesterol tablets once, at Drug RX Network, 4 months ago. CALLER: I bought more from another drugstore. GOOGLE: That doesn’t show on your credit card statements.
Well, this is the 'violation of personal privacy issue' about which 'State Assemblies' and the “U.S. Congress” need to learn and understand in order to craft effective legislation which is based upon 'universal standards of conscience and integrity...the result of decisions and actions which all of us make during our life's journey. Let's not use the current level of core values presently exhibited by the current actions of corporations such as certain banks, their executives, and a few elected officials. Let's base the needed 'Personal Privacy Standards legislation' upon those universally accepted ideals and core values already embedded in the American Constitution. At this juncture, “BIG BROTHER” MAY BE A CORPORATION like Facebook, YouTube, etc. with their collection of 'very large personal data bases; IT IS NOT BIG GOVERNMENT. EL DEBATE Y EL VOTO EN EL EXTRANJERO José López Zamorano La Red Hispana Millones de mexicanos que residen en los Estados Unidos tuvieron oportunidad de presenciar este domingo el primer debate de los aspirantes hacia las elecciones presidenciales del primero de julio, en medio de lo que parece ser un interés sin precedentes de los mexicanos en el extranjero en participar en las elecciones de su país, así sea a larga distancia. De acuerdo con cifras del Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) de México, más de 130,000 mexicanos que residen en el exterior, la mayoría de ellos en Estados Unidos, habían completado el proceso para votar por correo en los comicios presidenciales, una cifra que podría incrementarse cuando se tengan las estadísticas finales.
Si todos esos mexicanos completan el trámite y votan en las elecciones enviando su sufragio por mensajería, sería sin lugar a dudas la mayor cifra de participación electoral desde el extranjero en la historia política de México, aunque todavía una proporción muy menor del estimado de más de 12 millones de mexicanos que viven fuera de su país. Por comparación, apenas unos 40,000 mexicanos en el extranjero votaron en los comicios presidenciales del 2012, pero gracias desde entonces las autoridades electorales facilitaron el trámite para obtener las credenciales para votar. Eso explica en parte que más de 500,000 hayan solicitado el documento, aunque no todos se registraran antes del plazo del 31 de marzo.
Gracias a los cambios, los mexicanos podrán votar no sólo por presidente de la República, sino por senadores, gobernadores de los estados donde nacieron e incluso, los “chilangos” podrán votar por el próximo jefe de gobierno de la Ciudad de México Los mexicanos que hayan completado el trámite de su credencial de electores del INE en tiempo y forma empezarán a recibir su paquete electoral a partir del 29 de mayo. Para ser contabilizados deberán devolverlo por mensajería a fin de que llegue a México antes del 29 de junio. Quizás muchos mexicanos que siguieron el primer debate presidencial desde el extranjero, especialmente desde Estados Unidos, se quedaron con las ganas de escuchar propuestas sobre migrantes. La explicación es que está primera conversación
fue centrada en los temas de seguridad y lucha contra corrupción, aun cuando podría argumentarse que la inseguridad es uno de los factores que empujan a muchas familias a salir del país. Pero se espera que el tema migratorio sea uno de los temas en el segundo debate, el 20 de mayo en la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California. Ojalá sea un incentivo para que los mexicanos que residen en el extranjero se animen a cerrar el círculo y a votar el primero de julio. Los inmigrantes han sido calificados como los grandes héroes de México. Sus sacrificios y sus esfuerzos son motivo de reconocimiento. The nation's high school graduation rate continues to rise. With more than 84 percent of students graduating on time in 2016, it is at a record high, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education. In addition, the National Center for Education Statistics is expecting that 3.6 million students will graduate from high school in 2017-18. With the growth in graduates, graduation parties are increasing, and the bar is being raised on how to best honor and commemorate this special milestone. For graduating high schoolers, this is the year they will be moving on to life's next big adventure. It's a time to be excited, a time to be nervous, but above all, a time to celebrate. The season for grad parties is here, but for many parents, planning can be a bit tricky. Everyone wants a truly unique experience to recognize the accomplishments of their graduate, but at the same time, life can be hectic, and party planning can become stressful. The good news is that with a little know-how, it's possible to throw a meaningful graduation party without going over the edge. The program, which honors California’s most exemplary and inspiring public schools, returns after a three-year break, replacing the California Gold Ribbon Schools Program. Schools selected demonstrate significant gains in narrowing the achievement gap. Strong collaboration between parents and teachers combined with datadriven instruction has led to success at Alpha: Cornerstone, where 96 percent of students identify as Hispanic or Asian and 73 percent are eligible for free- or reduced-lunch. “At Alpha: Cornerstone, we have a collaborative environment in which everyone works together to ensure each student is supported and growing,” said Principal Emma Bean. “I’m proud of the work of our students, teachers and families who have worked together to create and foster our school.” Teachers and staff at Alpha: Cornerstone are intentional when it comes to building
a culture of trust and positivity. More recently, the school has also become more critical in using data to create the most effective programs and drive classroom instruction, ultimately meeting the needs of their students. “Alpha Public Schools was built on the idea that all students can succeed. This validates that belief and the progress we’re seeing at Alpha schools,” said John Glover, founder and CEO of Alpha Public Schools. “In this accomplishment, we celebrate the students, families, teachers, support staff, leaders and former and founding members of the community who have built such an amazing learning environment.” The California Distinguished Schools program returns after Each year, the criteria alternates between K-8 and high school grades. In May, the State Department of Education will honor: Alpha Cornerstone Academy along with other recognized schools at an awards ceremony. An answer to your dining needs. Create a message board. A novel way to share memories and create new ones is to set up a message board where guests can jot down stories and memories. Otherwise, girls frequently surrender their ‘surplus’ qualities before they even leave grade school, because they feel they won’t be accepted if they are ‘too much.’ They are not allowed too many gifts for fear of alienating boys and competing with other girls. This has to stop.” Engler says five ways parents can empower their daughters and help them grow into strong, successful women are: • Explain the social dynamic. “Help them understand the reasons why boys may be intimidated by powerful girls, and why girls may become jealous and pull down a girl who has too much,” Engler says.

While opportunities for women have advanced significantly in recent decades, studies reflect that the path to personal independence and growth isn’t always smooth - starting in early childhood up through high school. Gender stereotypes persist. According to a survey
of 1,900 girls and young women between 7 and 21, conducted by the charity Girlguiding, many feel that pressure from social media, TV, friends, teachers and parents affects how they think and act. Another study in the Journal of Adolescent Health reported that stereotypes of girls were reinforced by schools, parents and the media, thereby limiting their mobility and access to opportunities. One possible answer, says mentor and author
• Help them avoid social programming. Engler says that most forms of mass media “bombard girls with destructive messages.” With character development so important, Engler says parents need to offer more positive influences. “Discouraging Facebook is a good place to start,” Engler says, “due to its entrainment of a ‘me-oriented’ society.” • Provide social alternatives. Connecting with other parents and families who hold similar values is one option. Engler says, "Parents

need to find out what’s really going on with their daughters, both at home and at school. Perhaps consider online or home schooling if your child is being affected by negative conditioning from peers and/or misguided authority figures. Sadly, damaging messages come from every direction.” • Teach them to help others. Parents can rolemodel strengthening values. These values could be exemplified by going together to volunteer in soup kitchens, to foster homeless animals, or to visit lonely, old people in nursing homes. “Learning compassion for others supports strong self-esteem through character building,” Engler says. • Help them identify their unique desires and abilities. “Encourage pride in being who they are on an authentic level,” Engler says. “Help them experience life’s many aspects so they may explore their natural abilities and interests, while paying particular attention to what truly brings them joy - because that is usually where their authentic selves reside.” “We need to prevent damage early on,” Engler says, “instead of trying to fix it after it’s too late.” About Sheri Engler Sheri Engler is the author/illustrator of The Pearls of Wisdom: A Fairy Tale Guide to Life’s Magic Secrets for All Ages (www. Suzanne Potter California News Service SANTA MONICA, Calif. - This week is the first-ever "National Week of Conversation" - a series of events promoted by local groups that work to bridge the partisan divide - in California and across the nation. The idea is to get people talking about the issues, focusing on civil dialogue, where they listen respectfully and hopefully find common ground. Studies show that hyperpartisanship in the U.S. is as high these days as it was right after the Civil War. And Kamy Akhavan, CEO of a group called ProCon.org, said these ideological battle lines are corrosive to our democracy. "We need to be able to deliberate, discuss, debate issues without being disagreeable, and having things break down, to name calling, people retreating into their echo chambers and behind their filter bubbles," Akhavan said. "That's not how our system of government was designed to work. And yet increasingly that seems to be what's happening." To take part, visit N a t i o n a l We e k o f C o n v e r s a t i o n . o r g
and sign up to attend one of the public forums, join an online dialogue or be matched up with someone in your neighborhood whose perspective might broaden your own. Sandy Heierbacher, director of the National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation, said the groups are working hard to encourage people of all backgrounds to come to the table. "For race dialogues, oftentimes you have a white facilitator and a facilitator of color and that helps people that might be less drawn to dialogue or less trusting of it, helps them to feel like, 'OK, someone's going to be looking out for me in this space, so I might be more comfortable actually attending,'" Heierbacher said. Demographic studies show that Americans are increasingly "selfsorting" into like-minded communities, by moving to neighborhoods with very little diversity, and by choosing to follow partisan news and social media groups.

COUNTY OF SANTA CLARA CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING OF SOUTH COUNTY REENTRY RESOURCE CENTER Permanent site offers services to Gilroy, San Martin and Morgan Hill residents reentering their communities after incarceration turn their lives around is beneficial not only to them, but to their families and the community,” said Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee. “Every success helps us achieve that goal.” The South County Reentry Center was established in San Martin in April of 2015 as a pilot program, in response to concerns from city and public safety officials in jurisdictions such as Gilroy, San Martin and Morgan Hill. There were high arrest and conviction rates in these areas for low level offenders who had been recently released from custody or were serving the
remainder of their sentences under mandatory supervision by probation departments. Access to nearby substance use treatment services, employment opportunities and other resources can make a big difference in an individual’s success on their reentry journey. “Positive programs are an essential component of, and a good investment for, effective crime fighting. We must also continue to invest in community partnerships and proactive policing strategies,” said Morgan Hill Police Chief David Swing. “Investing in each of these areas results in better public safety outcomes.”

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF.— The County of Santa Clara Office of Reentry Services celebrated the grand opening of its new South County Reentry Resource Center this week. The Center has moved to its permanent location at 8425 Murray Avenue in Gilroy; it operated in a temporary location in San Martin since April of 2015. “Expanding these vital services creates greater access for residents who may not have transportation or time off from work to travel to San Jose,” said Supervisor Mike Wasserman, whose district includes South County. “By supporting individuals with services to stay healthy, gain education and employment, we strengthen the entire community.”

The Gilroy Center offers similar services as the Reentry Center in San Jose. Clients will have access to substance use screenings and assessments, behavioral health, primary healthcare and psychiatric services through the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center’s Mobile Medical Unit. They will also receive probation support and faith-based services, such as food, housing and community connections.
For many individuals coming back to their South County communities after incarceration, getting transportation to San Jose for reentry services was a significant hardship. The new Center is centrally located in a remodeled building at 8425 Murray Ave., near Highway 101 and Leavesley Road, in Gilroy, and is close to public transportation. This new center does not bring additional newly released individuals to South County communities. It provides services and evidencebased programs (which are key to building healthy lifestyles) directly to residents who already live there and who need them the most.

HHPZ SAN JOSE, CA - Happy Hollow Park & Zoo (HHPZ) is helping slow the decline of critically endangered black-and-white ruffed lemurs. Zookeepers and staff are tickled by the wide-eyed male lemur pup born at the Zoo on April 6. “This pup has stolen our hearts. The best news for species survival is that our veterinary staff has deemed him in good health,” says Heather Vrzal, Zoo Curator. “Our mama lemur was given a comfortable nesting place to care for her pup inside her exhibit, where we could monitor for any signs of health conditions. The baby is very curious and is just starting to poke his head outside the nest box.” Staff has added safety nets inside the exhibit, should the pup get over-zealous and explore too far outside the box. Newborn lemur pups are born fully furred with open eyes, but do not have the strength to hold on to their mothers for
travel. They live in the nest for up to two weeks before the mother carries them to nearby trees while she forages. Black-andwhite ruffed lemurs are one of two species of ruffed lemurs found in Madagascar. These primates play an important role in their ecosystem by helping replant vegetation with seeds dispersed in their droppings. Ruffed lemurs are also the largest of the 100 different species of lemurs, typically weighing seven to 10-pounds. “This isn’t just a cute baby animal story,” says HHPZ Conservation Manager, Charlotte Orr. “This is a conservation story. We have some amazing, endangered animal ambassadors. These animals may have been born in Zoos, but they help us educate visitors about the incredible biodiversity found across the world.”

biodegradable. Since we know how to grow these food crops so well, using the minimal amount of land for the highest yield, we can create bioplastic pretty efficiently. But given still exploding global human population numbers and more hungry mouths to feed, many wonder if it makes sense to take away land that could be used to grow food to make more plastic, even if it is biodegradable. To avoid wasting food crops to make plastic, researchers have pioneered new formulations of biodegradable plastic derived from feedstock not suitable for food or feed, such as wood, wheat straw, bagasse, corn cobs, palm fruit bunches, switch grass and waste vegetable oil. In Europe, the Mars candy company is using potato waste in its biodegradable wrappers for Snickers bars. Likewise, there’s no reason why pineapple or peanut couldn’t work as a feedstock—though market conditions usually dictate that such products fetch a higher price as food, especially since they don’t have to be processed as they would if they become bioplastic.

Biodegradable plastic is defined as any form of plastic that can break down into its constituent components in the environment within days, weeks or months without leaving behind potentially toxic residue. The term bioplastic
refers to any form of plastic derived from organic or plant-based materials rather than petroleum, regardless of whether it can break down (biodegrade) easily in the environment. Thus, the two terms are not necessarily the same, although many use the terms interchangeably. La agrupación rock alternativo de el sur de California tiene raíces que cruzan fronteras

Vocalista Luis Umberto Navejas, sus hermanos y unos amigos de escuela fueron los miembros fundadores de la banda Enjambre. La agrupación empezó en el sur de california en los principios de los años 2000’s y su sonido puede ser describido como mezcla de rock clásico y música romántica de latinoamérica, con un toque de ciencia ficción. Enjambre está a partir de ahora de gira promocionando su sexto álbum, “Imperfecto Extraño”, y llegará a San Francisco a dar un concierto (en los talones del cinco de mayo) el viernes cuatro de mayo en el Clift Hotel. Tuvimos oportunidad de hablar con Luis Umberto sobre las inicias de la banda, su mudanza de los estados unidos ha su patria México, y lo qué significa para ellos los elementos buenos y malos de su país que nuevamente llaman su hogar. Para empezar, ¿puedes hablar un poco sobre cómo fueron los empiezos de la agrupación? En la banda somos tres hermanos y dos amigos de high school. Nosotros somos originarios de Fresnillo, Zacatecas y a los principios de los 2000’s fuimos a vivir al sur de California, en Orange County, y allí es donde empezó la banda. Entonces [para] la mayoría de la banda nuestro apellido es Navejas, y sonaba como abejas, entonces nos pusimos Enjambre, como un enjambre de abejas. En inglés, “the bee swarm”. Después de una alineación diferente y de un primer disco que nos fue transformable bien en el sur de california hicimos un cambio drástico a nuestra música y grabamos un disco segundo, al finales del 2006-7, y empezamos una gira en México todos nosotros teníamos trabajos en el sur de california entonces estábamos viviendo como cualquier inmigrante, pero cuando entramos a México de gira nos empezamos a dar cuenta de que el público crecía. Decidimos quedarnos una temporada [en México] enfocados a la música y ahora ya no nos hemos ido, ya no volvimos. Nos ha ido bien al grupo. Ahora estamos promocionando nuestro septo álbum, contentos de hacerlo, contentos de estar de gira. Siempre quisimos presentar el rock con ciertas características de cantantes románticos y latinoamericanos, como Rafael Napoleón y José José, por lo menos ese es lo que dicen que suena, es lo que escuchamos en casa. Tiene rock clásico, rock progresivo y de los 70’s, sintonizadores de aquella época también, y bueno todo ya envuelto en un sonido que es nuestro. ¿Que diferencias hay en vivir en los estados unidos y luego regresar a México y quedarse allí?

Fue raro porque nosotros hamos sido de familias que vivían en México y querían ir a los estados unidos para buscar una vida más de mejor calidad. Nosotros éramos como parte de eso, de esa tradición que era la razón que estábamos en los estados unidos, nos fuimos con nuestra familia, con nuestros papas. El volver al México era nomas de ir a vacaciones o nos dimos cuenta de que no es estados unidos en que hay oportunidad. Para nosotros es la ciudad de México. Y ahora que estamos viajando y en diferentes lugares me di cuenta de que en realidad el lugar de las oportunidades no es un lugar físico, es dondequiera que uno pone sus pies, la oportunidad la busque uno onda sea que esté. Me da mucho gusto romper esa tradición de mi casa porque no creo que todas las tradiciones tengan resultado positivo y nadamas estar en un círculo vicioso en un estilo de vida de que ‘creces y vas a trabajar a los estados unidos’ no tiene nada de malo ese estilo de vida pero no es para todos. En nuestro caso no lo fue, es la música y era muy lindo volver a los estados unidos con un contexto muy diferente. Ahora vamos para vacaciones, vamos a visitar familia y amigos. Es muy lindo, y vivir una vida agusta aqui en México también. Me puedes hablar un poco sobre este disco “Imperfectos Extraños”, y ¿que fue el método de sacar el sonido del disco, que fue el logro? Desde nuestros primeros discos era una búsqueda de sintetizador y instrumentos. Anteriormente los instrumentos fueron difíciles de adquirir sin ingresos. Es cara. Ahora que tenemos un presupuesto un poquito más generoso pudimos usar sintonizadores más antiguos y repararlos y entonces el resultado de “Imperfectos Extraños” tiene que ver mucho con eso y los sonidos que tantos nos gusta de esa época. Tiene una estampa muy marcada de lo que nos gusta, rock clásico y del lado dramático que también es una marca constante en Enjambre, tiene una dosis bastante fuerte de aquello. Tiene sus dos polos, y todo envuelto en esta muestra de sintonizadores sugiriendo una dimensión desconocida, o la ciencia ficción, como tal vez se veía en los 70’s. Y creo que esta muy bien logrado en ese respecto. A mi me gustaría que le gente lo escuche y que ellos den su opinión o que la definan como a ellos se les ajuste a su día a día, nos gusta ser partícipes de la banda sonora de el ser humano.
tiene un espíritu vivo y dispuesto a seguir adelante, y no dejar de que semejantes tragedias naturales los derrumbe, integralmente, espiritualmente para poder seguir adelante con sus vidas. Viviendo en México ahora, y teniendo la experiencia de vivir en los estados unidos, viendo cómo son ambas comunidades, ¿que puedes decir sobre las experiencias con los aspectos políticos de ambos? Yo creo que no cabe duda de que es un poco vergonzoso ver como el presidente de los estados unidos está manejando al país, yo me siento mal por los anos que viví en los estados unidos tengo cierto cariño por el ciudadano americano en general. Soy franco, yo vivo en México y a pesar de que si hay problemas en los estados unidos que nos afectan el país tiene una crisis mucho mayor, tenemos presidente igual de malo, tenemos problemas de seguridad, de pobreza, de corrupción. Yo antes de criticar otros países hay que recordarnos que hay mucho que hacer aqui en México. La gente es excelente, trabajadora, y emprendedora y es un país rico en diversos recursos y no deberíamos estar en una posición que estamos. Antes de apuntar el dedo a otro país o otro presidente tenemos que poner la atención a lo que está pasando en nuestro país. [Ahora] la gente no puede salir en la noche a pasarla bien porque hay seguridad pública competente. No es posible que la gente está desapareciendo. No es justo que la gente que tiene negocios tenga que esconder porque les cobran piso. Es una época de terror en México y la verdad me gustaría mas bien si hay un tipo de cambio o un ajuste en un gobierno empezar por el mío. Y para la última pregunta. Primeramente, muchas gracias Luis por tomar tiempo para hablar. Entonces, la música de Enjambre toma una ruta que puede ser visto como universal en su sonido y
temas. ¿La intención de la música de Enjambre es de conectar con los hispanohablantes, los mexicanos, o a todos los que escuchen? La primer intención de componer nuestra música es expresarnos y si hay alguien que va a simpatizar con el mensaje o como se está armando la canción la verdad es irrelevancia de donde son. Pero sucede que si somos mexicanos y que si tenemos cariño a nuestro país. Y sucede que nuestro informo nos influencia a la hora de componer música entonces si existe un especie de conexión con nuestro país y nuestra música. No estamos cerrados a que sea música dedicada al mexicano. Si gente de otros países les gusta, mejor. En estados unidos podemos resonar excelente. Hablando de la humanidad la verdad soy un ser humano y creo que seriamos un mejor mundo si en realidad fuéramos más considerado al prójimo. Creo que vivemos en un lugar, un país y un mundo que existe un egoísmo y una indiferencia hacia el vecino. Ese es la primera crisis que existe en la búsqueda de paz. No puedes tener paz interior, no puedes tener paz ante la humanidad. Si uno está viviendo constantemente de chingar al otro, entonces va ver mas falta de paz interna. Y yo creo que tener amor al ser humano sería un paso bastante abismal para mejorar nuestra situación en México y en cualquier lugar. Nosotros hacemos música, nuestro tema no es una en particular, sino varios y lo hacemos en la manera más digna, más honrada posible y siempre pasárnoslo bien. Esto es lo que no corresponde a nosotros, estamos haciéndolo en una manera honrada y transparente, y creo que esa es nuestra contribución. Quería preguntar sobre sus experiencias ayudando a la gente de Morelos después de los terremotos en México el pasado septiembre. Si, nosotros fuimos a Tlaquiltenango y Jojutla que fueron los lugares más devastados por la tragedia del terremoto y cuando pasaron los terremotos nos juntamos para discutir que podríamos contribuir. Afortunadamente la gente en México no se quedó con los brazos cruzados, hubo una atención inmediata a los problemas. Había muchísima gente donando. Se vio un México muy unido, amoroso. Yo me di cuenta que con Enjambre pudimos ayudar, y intentamos en una manera más efectiva. En ese momento hay mucha ayuda, pero yo pensé entre unos dos tres meses la necesidad va estar alli ya bajar la fiebre de la ayuda. Allí es cuando nosotros fuimos a participar y fue justo en ese momento cuando regresamos a los lugares afectados donde había mucha necesidad, pero ya no tanta ayuda. Aprovechamos recudir dinero de nuestros conciertos a donar dinero a fundaciones que ayudaban a reconstruir hogares y fue una cosa que nos partió el corazón, pero al mismo tiempo nos dio mucho orgullo como la gente

Hablando del estado de Puebla, la tradicional china poblana, es considerado un traje que fue resultado de la mezcla de la vestimenta de La Nueva España y algunas zonas urbanas del centro y sureste del país. El traje, lleva consigo una blusa blanca y se tejen bordados de colores en forma de flores y figuras geométricas. En estas fechas tenemos la oportunidad de apreciar las costumbres, tradiciones y el folclor de México en todo su esplendor. Durante esta temporada se presentan en diversas ciudades de California, grupos artísticos que nos deleitan con la danza azteca y los bailes folclóricos, dichos bailes son acompañados con vestuarios vistosos y trajes típicos para la
ocasión. Platicamos con Palmira Macías, gerente de la tienda “De la Rosa”, en San José, tienda que cuenta con la tradición de vender los trajes folclóricos más hermosos de la ciudad. Ella nos comentó que los trajes típicos de México, son el resultado de la fusión de las culturas indígenas y española. Jalisco, es uno de los estados representativos del folclor nacional, se destaca por su belleza y colorido, haciendo gala de colores como el rosa mexicano, el amarillo, rojo y color naranja. Y por supuesto el tradicional traje de charro. “Cada uno de los estados de la República Mexicana, está representado por sus trajes típicos regionales y sus danzas. Los atuendos folclóricos se adornan con trenzas, peinetas,

También charlamos con una diseñadora de modas local, América Sánchez, ella nos relató que su fuente de inspiración en los trajes que diseña, es el colorido vibrante de los trajes típicos mexicanos, “ Me siento orgullosa de mi herencia cultural, siempre es un placer para mí, crear diseños que representen el folclor y las tradiciones de México”. “Como diseñadora mexicana, invito a los padres de familia a que les enseñen a sus niños desde pequeños, la importancia de nuestra herencia y folclor nacional. He diseñado trajes tradicionales con un toque moderno, un toque mágico que proviene de la gran variedad de colores que hacen resaltar a nuestro país en el exterior”. Platicamos con América acerca del Ballet Folclórico de Amalia Hernández, quien fuese una pionera en este tipo de espectáculos. “Las danzas mexicanas te transportan a otros sitios y a otros tiempos, tienen una magia que agrada a cualquier espectador”. Comentó América. Localmente contamos con varios grupos de baile folclórico, entre ellos destaca el Ballet Folclórico “Fuego Nuevo”. Agrupación artística que cuenta con más de una década de trayectoria en el Área de la Bahía y California. Cada estado de México es representado por una gran cantidad de danzas típicas y trajes regionales que difieren entre ellos, pero al mismo tiempo, están ligados por sus textiles, gracia, belleza y colorido. Season 1 of HBO’s Westworld reboot completely captured my imagination, so in honor of the premiere of Season 2, I thought it would be fun to revisit just one of the mind-bending techno-ethics questions sparked by the series. BTW: This article was originally published on December 11, 2016. It should not surprise you to learn that the pace of technological change suggested in this writing has been surpassed, so the discussion topics offered here are now significantly less hypothetical. Westworld has inspired some of the best, most engaging (mercifully apolitical) conversations I’ve had in a very long while. The series is both entertaining and thoughtprovoking. If you haven’t seen it, Westworld is an HBO series, based on the 1973 Michael Crichton movie, about a futuristic amusement park where people can interact with synthetic humans (robots that are indistinguishable from human beings) and do pretty much whatever they want with them. Is Sex with a Robot Cheating? Yes or No? There are quite a few articles that explore the ethical and moral issues arising from the advent of this type of technology. This article is not one of them. This article is about the incremental technological steps between where we are now and where this is clearly going. So if you want a yes or no answer to the question, “Is sex with a robot cheating?” you have to reword the question thusly: “Is sex with a surrogate, synthetic human with a convincing amount of AI capabilities cheating?” Asked that way, mostly everyone I’ve discussed this with would quickly say, “Yes.” Which raises the question, “When is this going to become an actual problem, as opposed to a hypothetical one?”
The difficulty in answering “when” is complicated by the verb “to be.” In the series, we (the audience), they (the humans who visit Westworld) and the Hosts (the synthetic humans) do not know if the Hosts are sentient. If they are sentient, then we have created artificial life. That technology will come with its own set of remarkable problems. (We’ll explore artificial life in a different article.)
The adult entertainment industry is evolving Virtual Reality (VR) much more quickly than it evolved streaming video or webcams. There are several companies working as quickly as possible to combine VR, NLP and AI to create convincing sexual experiences. Following this logical progression, would a relationship with a non-sentient system that combines VR, NLP and AI be considered cheating? The Next Level
That aside, if they are not sentient, then they are just mechanical devices. But this line of reasoning has gotten me into a bit of trouble.
Not to get too graphic, if we add some rudimentary mechanical devices to this VR, NLP, AI system, would a relationship with this modern-day version of Woody Allen’s Orgasmatron be considered cheating?
Incremental Steps to Human-on-Robot Relationships
If we build this system into a lifelike, semirobotic doll … now?
“Real” Westworld-style Hosts are the stuff of science fiction. (We’ll discuss what it might take to build one in a minute.) The point is, you don’t need anything like a Westworldstyle Host to create a real world of ethical, moral and sexual issues.
What if it were a toaster oven or a smartphone or a table saw?
In 2013, Joaquin Phoenix starred in Her, a movie about a man who falls in love with a natural language processing (NLP) system named Samantha. According to the Consumer Technology Association, in 2013 NLP systems could understand approximately 3 out of 4 spoken words. Today it’s just shy of 4 out of 4. That is an amazing amount of technological ground to cover in only three years. Why do we care about NLP? Well, at the current pace of technological change, the science fiction female NLP system that Joaquin Phoenix fell in love with in the movie is just a few years from becoming science fact. We’re just waiting for AI to improve a bit – not all the way to pseudoconsciousness (however that may be defined), but just good enough to fool you. (Do some research about the Turing test if you’re truly interested in what I mean by “fool.”) Can you fall in love with a computer? Can
Some Guidelines Are Required Are you having trouble placing the line that needs to be crossed? Do you have a private line as well as a line that you would prefer to present to the outside world? If we’re talking about a device that is not sentient or conscious – a machine – is there even a line? I’ll let others tell you how to think. I’m just going to tell you about the technologies that are here today or just over the horizon. From a technologist’s perspective, I can say with certainty that we are very close to creating systems that will cause us to rethink and redefine some of our most sacred ideas. Terms like relationship, commitment, fidelity, monogamy and many, many more are about to evolve. In practice, we don’t need anything like a real Westworld-style Host to cause all kinds of pain, anxiety or worse.
Remember that talk you had with your parents when you were just starting to notice the opposite sex? It’s time to think about how that talk is going to sound when you add loving, committed relationships with an AI system to the mix.

Unless the machine identifies itself as a machine, a child who is between the ages of five and eight years old today will not be able to tell if they are speaking to a person or a machine by the time they are at an age where they are seriously dating. At the rate the technology is progressing, it will take less than 10 years to get there – probably way less. Mind-bending Issues Want to think about some potentially mindbending consequences of the advance of machine learning and NLP systems? I wrote an article in May 2016 titled “I’ve Talked to the Future and It Talked Back.” Here’s a question you should be asking yourself today: “Should you treat your household NLP interface (Alexa, Google Personal Assistant, etc.) like a person? Should you be polite when you speak to it, or is it OK to be abrupt or even abusive? The devices won’t care. They don’t have feelings; they are computers that have been programmed to speak with us. Will we care? How will we teach our children to differentiate between machines that sound and act like people, and other disembodied voices that are actual people? Will a child (or a grown-up) know when a customer service representative is a person or an NLP interface? In the very near future, it will be almost impossible to tell.” That’s Great, but When Will We Get Westworld-Style Hosts? There have been countless hours of chatter between my professional friends and colleagues who work in and around the technologies we believe would be required to create real Westworld-style Hosts. I say “believe” because if we were to start building one today, we could only use the component technologies we have now: current chipsets, power sources, machine learning, data science, robotics, nanotechnology, regenerative reliquary (bio-printed scaffolding seeded with stem cells or something like stem cells), some kind of chemistry to blend collagen with synthetic fiber or a fully synthetic substitute for collagen, and on and on. But that’s today. If anyone were to start this journey with any hope of making a device not only that was indistinguishable from a human but also that could fool another human into believing it was alive, they’d probably be better off waiting for a more advanced set of building blocks. Assuming there is a reason to actually build Hosts, they will probably be born in the last half of this century. Could it be sooner? Of course. On the other hand, get ready to discuss relationships with machines realistically, because the subject will not be hypothetical much longer. Author’s note: This is not a sponsored post. Ayer estuvieron en Albany personas con discapacidades para decir a los legisladores que Nueva York está reprobando en cuanto a proveer de fondos a programas vitales para una vida independiente. Hace cinco años el Gobernador Andrew
