The governance of America is still ‘a work in progress’ 240 years after being initially adopted in 1776. And today, too many residents have not read this ‘charter document’ which is the basis of our governance. My focus at this time is that of the ‘Freedom of the Press’ also known as the ‘Fourth Estate of Governance’ after

Our local challenge is to do what is necessary to ensure that does not happen here in Silicon Valley. That requires an informed working class. SquareTrade, a protection plan provider for smartphones, tablets and other electronics, tested the durability of new smartphones from Samsung and rated the phones according to their breakability. The SquareTrade Breakability Score is based on a number of factors, from physical characteristics to the results of SquareTrade’s drop, dunk and slide tests -- and for the first time, the score incorporated results from a new bendability test.

Suzanne Potter CALIFORNIA NEWS SERVICE Over the past 30 years, the Latino population in the United States has risen by 243 percent. But during that same period, according to a UCLA study of census data, the number of Latino doctors has decreased 22 percent. The study found that the shortage is acute in California, with only 50 Latino doctors for every 100,000 Latino patients. Study co-author Dr. Gloria Sanchez said communication is key to a strong doctor-patient relationship. She noted that it leads to better outcomes, especially

with chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. “If a doctor and a patient can’t understand each other,” she said, “I think that there can be very negative patient outcomes.” A 2009 analysis showed that patients who don’t speak English well report understanding only half of what doctors tell them. The UCLA study blamed the Latino physician shortage partly on the dismantling of affirmative action programs in California, and a decrease in anti-poverty programs over the past few decades. Sanchez said that led to a big drop in the number of Latinos going to college and becoming doctors.

“It really is a reflection of who gets into medical school, and it’s typically not an ethnic minority,” she said. “You have to be fairly affluent and/or be in good educational systems to get a secondary degree, like an M.D.” Sanchez suggested that in order to produce more doctors from disadvantaged populations, the United States should invest more money in programs that start early - bringing science education, tutoring, self-esteem and leadership programs to elementary schools in lowincome neighborhoods. Downtown College Prep Alum Rock High School’s Engineering Team was selected as a national Grand Prize Winner in Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow Competition. These students were selected among a competitive pool of 3000+ applicants from across the country as they proudly represented the State of California and East San José.

Way engineering program is in its first year and has already gained national visibility and recognition. At the local level, students have received commendations from the CIty of San Jose and the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. This victory is a great source of pride for the engineering students, their families and the entire school community.

In response to California’s drought, the DCP engineering team developed an affordable gray water system capable of reducing household water use by up to 37%. This system would cost less than $75, making it accessible for low-income residents and easily replicated.

Students credit their engineering teacher Luis Ruelas, for encouraging them to create this project and for believing they had a chance at a national award. With the goal of solving a problem in their community, students spent their weekends and school breaks working on the project. While the students worked wholeheartedly, they didn’t know they really stood a chance. Through five competitive phases, they proved time and again that the small charter school from East San José had the skills, vision and commitment to win. The team was given the opportunity to travel to New York for the final round of the competition where they visited several Ivy League universities. At the end of April, three students and Mr. Ruelas

As a National Award Winner the team will receive $120,000 worth of Samsung technology for their school. In addition, the project was selected to receive the “Environmental Sustainability Innovation Award” from the National Environmental Education Foundation that includes an additional $25,000 cash award.

San Jose CALIFORNIA The alumni brothers of Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. (NAK), raised funds through their alumni network this past weekend at Chacho’s Restaurant in San Jose, and are giving $1,000 back to the local community in the form of backpacks filled with school supplies to lowincome students. The fundraising event was hosted on the eve of the fraternity’s 27th annual NAKfest (NAKfest is NAK’s signature event. It is the annual family reunion of brotherhood where Alumni and undergraduates reconnect. Undergraduates gain motivation to pursue greater success in community service and campus participation). “NAK alumni care deeply about our communities of

Hace una semana el gimnasio AKA (American Kickboxing Academy) en el sur de San José fue rodeado por la prensa para obtener información acerca de miembros del gimnasio de entrenamiento MMA. Más que todos fueron a búsqueda del campeón heavyweight del UFC, Cain Velasquez, que regresa al ring este verano para UFC 188. Su última pelea ocurrió en Octubre 2013, cuando anotó una victoria por TKO sobre Junior Dos Santos. AKA es el hogar de muchos peleadores de MMA de la área de la bahía, con el más laureado, Velasquez, en la vanguardia. Lo mas exitante para los fans como también Velasquez es no solo que entra al ring de nuevo, pero que esta pelea, contra el campeón interim Fabricio Werdum, sera en la ciudad de México este Junio 13. Velasquez, 32, tiene raíces en el norte de california. Nacio en Salinas pero parte de su vida creció en Yuma, Arizona, en donde estuvo hasta que fue a Arizona State para sus estudios universitarios. Dice Velasquez, “fuimos a Arizona cuando tenia como 2 o 3 años. Cuando termine

de luchar en el colegio oí que había un gran gimnasio aquí en San José con muchos peleadores, y pues yo quería entrenar en este tipo de pelea.” Cuando se graduó de Arizona State reunió todas sus pertenencias personales y tomó la decisión de moverse a San José para establecerse como un artista marcial mixto y comenzar su entrenamiento que lo llevó a convertirse, sin duda, a uno de los más dominante en el deporte. Porque estuvo lesionado a fines de 2013 perdió la oportunidad de pelear en México, aunque fue a ver la pelea entre Fabricio Werdum y Mark Hunt. Desde entonces a estado entrenando y estudiando su oponente, Werdum, mirando que hace bien y que hace mal. Hablando sobre la técnica dice Velasquez “La única cosa que esta diferente es que estamos peleando con alguien que tiene un diferente estilo, el igual estilo que Dos Santos. Werdum tiene un buen estilo de patadas, de boxeo, y hace un buen estilo de jiu jitsu tambien. El es un peleador completo.”

También habló Velasquez sobre tener orgullo de pelear en la madre tierra. “Ahorita siento feliz para tener esa oportunidad de pelear allí. No pude pelear la primera vez porque tenía la lesión pero ya gracias a dios que puedo pelear. Es mi sueño pelear allí, en frente de todos los mexicanos.” Velasquez siente la diferencia de los aficionados en Las Vegas o el resto de los Estados Unidos comparados a los de Latina América, comparando los a los aficionados del fútbol. “Es diferente. Son un poco mas locos,” dice con una sonrisa. “Cuando yo estaba (En México) en la pelea de Fabricio y Mark Hunt, estaba toda la gente gritando y eso me gusta a mi. Toda la gente esta cerca y animados.” Finalmente dice Velasquez, “soy el campeón, y voy a defender mi título.” Aunque si dice que estara nervioso en el dia de la pelea, estara entrenando y el foco sera ganar la batalla. “Ya se que si puede ganar (Werdum) pero no es seguro. Doug Moss & Roddy Scheer EarthTalk Truth be told, those old used up disposable alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt, etc.) aren’t the environmental menace they used to be before the federal government mandated taking out the mercury, a potent neurotoxin linked to a wide range of environmental and health problems, as part of the Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act of 1996. These days, in every U.S. state except California (which requires recycling of all spent batteries), it is safe and legal to throw them in the trash.

Many electronics, big box and drugstore chains that sell batteries (BestBuy, Walgreens and others) will also take them back for free and send them off for recycling. Environmental Health & Safety Online, the leading webbased clearinghouse for information on environmental health and safety, reports that today’s alkaline disposables are composed “primarily of common metals—steel, zinc, and manganese—that do not pose a health or environmental risk during normal use or disposal.”

Unfortunately, some other kinds of disposable batteries, such as the increasingly ubiquitous alkaline manganese “button cells” (commonly used in digital thermometers, calculators and many toys), still contain mercury, and the federal government provides little guidance regarding their proper disposal. The Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act doesn’t mandate phasing mercury out of alkaline manganese button cells because, at the time of the law’s passage in 1996, including mercury was the only way to control the potentially dangerous formation of gas inside the specialized miniature batteries. Lithium button cells are a safer, mercury-free alternative now widely available, but consumers often opt for the still cheaper alkaline manganese variety.

In California, tighter waste reduction laws mean that residents are required to recycle their spent alkalines by placing them in clear ziplock bags on top of their curbside trash cans (so garbage haulers can keep them separate) or by dropping

possibility, without the knowledge of the other Avengers (albeit fellow “nerd”, Bruce “The Hulk“ Banner). Things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, along with added new Avengers, are forced to stop the villainous Ultron (voiced by a charasmatic James Spader) emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his villain-type plans. One of the great things about Joss Whedon, who created “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and wrote “Toy Story” is his grasp of humor, drama and now with the budget of Avengers 1 & 2, how to use the blockbuster visuals to his advantage. The action and battle scenes are most definitely beefed up. Where Avengers was testing the waters on how these characters, from various other Marvel movies would work on screen, and it did so with grace and stability. In this

film there’s even more new characters, including 3 new Avengers. Relationships grow and are tested in this film, and you see backstories and deep dark secrets which are revealed throughout, challenging the union of ‘earth’s mightiest heroes’. Also, Hawkeye finally gets a lot more screen time. At the beginning of the film, he’s been the only Avenger to get the least amount of screen time in the whole MCU, and also one of two Avengers to not have their own film. (Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow has been prominent in a few MCU films) It can be dizzying to see so many

heroes with all their unique traits and visual components of these abilities on screen, but at the same time once you’re in the bulk of the film you’re looking forward to them uniting and seeing how they can cooperate and coordinate these powers to stop foes. One scene in the final half hour is especially grandiose, like looking at an ancient Greek God war scene (Maybe its because Thor, the God of Thunder, is in the crew). Sure there are items in the “bad” column in this film. Foremost, I’d recommend skipping the 3D version of the film. Sure the IMAX experiences is bigger and better, but in this case there isn’t a version of Avengers: Age of Ultron with-

out the 3D attached to it. That’s how it feels, like an afterthought, an attachment to up-charge the ticket. Many times the perspective of the different layers caused my eyes to be unfocused but that may be my own problem. Either way there’s plenty of other 3D films that have done a better job and are worthy of the 3D ticket. This one isn’t. It’ll please your senses just fine on regular 2D. In terms of the film the action and battle sequences suffered at times from zoomed in focus, almost like a Transformers movie where you can’t tell what these two fighters are exactly doing, except this movie is actually good, from start to end. Although very dense with dialogue as well as visual spectacle, the film relies a lot on the one-liners which weren’t as present in the original Avengers. At times this takes away from the dramatic tone, but as I recall, the film is suppose to appease both kids and adults so there’s that. It also has enough for the children as well as the adults which is great. I will not give any big clues to

the easter eggs, Stan Lee cameo, or relation to the rest of the upcoming films in the MCU, but it does change the game in terms of what will happen in the MCU, and who will be part of The Avengers when the next installment begins. There is a lot of in between going on until then. Speaking of which, lookout for the rest of the upcoming MCU films, which include “Ant Man”, “Captain America: Civil War”, “Doctor Strange”, “Guardians of the Galaxy 2”, “MCU Spiderman Movie” (title pending), “Thor: Ragnarok”, “Black Panther”, “Avengers Infinity War: Part 1 & 2”, “Captain Marvel” and finally, “The Inhumans”. Marvel Studios/Disney has mapped out all these connected adventures until 2020. So to watch the “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is to get a mere taste of whats to come. Its exciting and ultimately entertaining on its own, but the added thrill of knowing its the beginning of something greater is most definitely a reason to watch as well. 4/5.

Calling all brujas cosmicas (cosmic witches) to fight Christopher Columbus and the modalities of whiteness, imperialism, and masculinity! Malportado Kids are an anti-colonial tropical dance punk duo from Providence, RI. Their new 10” EP, Total Cultura, the follow-up to their 2014 self-released debut Mi Concha EP, will be released this June on Dead Labour! True to their name, Malportado Kids (poorly-behaved kids) is comprised of activistartists Victoria Ruiz and Joey La Neve DeFrancesco who also rage in bilingual punk outfit Downtown Boys. Total Cultura expands on the sounds and issues of their debut; rallying against racism, war and colonialism, demolishing every last semblance of propriety. Malportado Kids set up a different kind of “political party,” in that they infuse stimulating social critiques with infectious party jams. “Bruja Cosmica”, the record’s lead single, is the theme song

of anti-imperialist witches everywhere, setting a catchy horn sample against lyrics extolling all those using their magical powers to fight oppression. It’s also a warning against those who would mess with the witch: “La bruja puede ser la dama // que hace // la cama” (The witch could be the housekeeper who makes your bed). The record’s final song, “Basta Huedo”, rails against institutions of white supremacy: “Little ass//Little hands//Give me back//My Fucking Land.” Downtown Boy’s drummer Norlan Olivo is featured on the final verse

of the song. The digital-only version of the record contains a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire”. Malportado Kids are faithful to the desperation of the original, but Ruiz’s powerful delivery makes the track even more relevant to the struggles of young people today. Total Cultura is danceable propaganda constantly reminding us to take back the power with the enormous power we already have. It will be released digitally and on 10” vinyl on June 2 via Dead Labour.

Suzanne Potter CALIFORNIA NEWS SERVICES SAN DIEGO - The U.S. Border Patrol opened a stretch of fence along the border with Mexico near San Diego for 15 minutes this weekend to let members of four long-separated families embrace. Part of the Friendship Day celebration and Children’s Day holiday in Mexico, the event was organized by Border Angels, an immigration reform group, in partnership with the Border Patrol. Enrique Morones, executive director of Border Angels,

says parents and grandparents who had been deported to Mexico were finally able to hug the U.S.-born children they left behind. “They tell me that it means everything,” he says. “Even if it’s only two minutes, that’s a lifetime of wanting to hug your child, your grandchild. Love has no borders.” Border Angels wants Americans to see the human side of the immigration debate. The group is pushing Congress to pass what it calls “humane immigration reform,” which would prioritize family reunification while still protecting border security in the post-9/11 era.

“As a result of the efforts of Border Patrol agents across the San Diego sector, relationships are being fostered with the general public, while balancing our border security mission,” says Cazares. A similar event took place for the first time two years ago, but the fence was only open for two minutes on that occasion.

Let’s start with Mexico. Small-scale, single-family Mexican farmers have long grown corn as a means to provide for themselves and their families, selling enough to get by until the next harvest. However, NAFTA allowed large-sized, corporate American farmers, who benefitted from huge monetary subsidies from the American government, to sell corn in Mexico at a price below

what it costs to grow corn in Mexico. Mexican farmers could not compete with the lowerpriced American corn, and found themselves without a means to earn money. They had few, if any, opportunities in Mexico, and many left for the United States to look for work. Immigration to America increased dramatically after the implementation of NAFTA. The 1995 implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which broke down tariff and regulatory trade barriers between Mexico, the United States and Canada, has led to lost jobs and low wages, as well as increased immigration to the US by Mexicans who lost their livelihood due to NAFTA policies. NAFTA has caused a lot of suffering for many people.

people lived in the United States. Currently, as stated by the PEW Hispanic Research Center, there are approximately 11.5 million. The state of Oaxaca was hit especially hard. According to the Oaxacan Institute for Attention to Migrants, there are now 500,000 Oaxacans living in the United States, 300,000 in California alone. Oaxacans have held rallies centered on “The Right to Stay Home,” where impassioned speeches were given and the phrase, “El derecho de no migrar (the right to

not migrate)” was shouted over and over again in Spanish, and in the indigenous languages of Mixteco and Triqui, as many indigenous communities were affected. A 2005 study by the World Bank, commissioned by the Mexican government, found that the extreme rural poverty rate of 37% prior to NAFTA in 1992-4, jumped to about 52% in 1996-8 after NAFTA took effect. This was due, the report said, “mainly by the 1995 economic crisis, the sluggish performance of agriculture, stagnant wages,

Things also haven’t been rosy on the American side of the border. According to Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch and other institutes, about 1 million American workers (which includes many Mexican-Americans), lost their livelihoods due to corporations moving their factories to Mexico to take advantage of the lower wages. These displaced American workers spend a long time unemployed, and when they do find another job, it is often at lower wages. Many American corporations now use the very real threat of moving to Mexico when faced with demands for higher wages and better benefits. As the New York Times notes, the downfall of manufacturing is a major reason for the widening income gap

between the rich and the rest of us. Corporations and investors like free trade because it increases their profits, as they can sell their products, which are made at low cost, in areas where incomes and wages are high. The US is now engaged in negotiations for another free trade treaty called the TransPacific Partnership. This has been called “NAFTA on steroids” and involves twelve countries: the United States, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. President Obama is in favor of it, but many liberal Democrats and economists have spoken out against it. These include the fiery progressives Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, and the outspoken economists Joseph Stiglitz, Robert Reich and Paul Krugman. We should listen to them. The Trans-Pacific Partnership promises more suffering for the American and Mexican worker, and more riches for the already rich. Enough already!

He went further and said that she feels strongly that police and minority communities have much more in common than differences. This is probably an accurate read on Lynch’s feeling about police-minority community relations. Now her feeling and belief is going to be sorely tested with the Baltimore turmoil.

The likelihood is that it won’t leave there particularly if Baltimore city officials decline to bring charges against any of the officer’s involved in Gray’s death.

Brown. But the department let Wilson off the hook by finding there was no grounds to indict him on civil rights charges. The issue of just how far the Justice Department could and should go in these cases was left dangling when Holder left. So what will Lynch do in Baltimore and beyond? She’ll have to look at the Baltimore case and decide that if the locals take no action against the officers in the Gray case whether there’s any “compelling federal interest” in a prosecution of them, namely that the government believes that the officer’s conduct constitutes a federal offense, and that there is enough evidence that the government can obtain a conviction. There’s the strong suspicion that Gray’s death was caused by his physical manhandling by police during the arrest. And while there was no apparent racial motive in their confronting and arresting Gray that is not a hard and fast requirement for a civil right prosecution. The issue is whether a civilian or a suspect’s rights were violated.

The safeguard of that right must be a fundamental concern of federal prosecutors. The Gray case, as in other cases involving police use of deadly force against mostly unarmed blacks, again raises the deeply troubling question about the power of the law to protect citizen from his or her unimpeded right to life and safety. Federal prosecutors play a major role in insuring that where there’s the suspicion that an individual’s rights might have been violated because of their race and gender that the power of federal law is brought to bear to insure that right is protected. This was the rationale that federal prosecutors used in the Rodney King beating case to bring civil rights charge against the four LAPD officers that beat King. The linchpin was that they acted in an official capacity when they violated King’s rights. The Justice Department scrupulously tries to avoid the prosecution of a police officer. It goes to great lengths to shield itself from the charge

that it’s bowing to media or public pressure to prosecute. This is why the percentage of civil rights prosecutions it authorizes is infinitesimally low. Yet in Gray’s death there may well be crucial federal interests in insuring the rights of individuals to be free from undue harm because of their color, or being in a public area merely because someone perceives they shouldn’t be in and then acts on that perception with no cause other than that belief or perception. The other option is for Lynch to follow Holder’s lead and aggressively institute a pattern and practice action against Baltimore. That means aggressively monitoring the policies and practices of the department in relation to policing in minority communities. Holder also took heat for this from the right. But it had to be done. Baltimore has given Lynch her first chance to weigh in handily on the nation’s most intractable and deadly issue. That’s the wanton police slaying of unarmed blacks. Baltimore then is her first big test.
