When one recalls fond memories which involve your ‘MOTHER’, that’s when an appreciation and gratitude are experienced with regard to a lot of family events resulting from that relationship. As long as you remember her, her spirit and influence continue to exist. Caring, honor and respect are due your mother (and father) for it is they who begat you, and it is she who was pregnant with you and rejoiced on that day, your birthday, when you were born. Too many celebrate birthdays without mentioning your mother’s role. Your birth was just the beginning of a nurturing parental process which nurtured and supported your physical, mental, and spiritual development. In the beginning, your mother may have nurtured you with breast-feedings; kept you in clean in dry clothing; cooed & cuddled you; paid attention to all your needs all the while demonstrating caring love. With ‘cooing and ‘ahs’, you began to learn language and relationship skills you still use as an adult. Today, these skills are taken for granted, but if you take time to observe a ‘new mother with child’, basic emotional recollections will well up in your mind. Your mother was your first teacher who supported and cared for you when you were most vulnerable and helpless. She watched over you until you achieved the age of transition to being a young adult and then kept on being there for you.

Those ‘madonna with child’ experiences have existed since your mother taught you to begin talking, to be ‘potty-trained, and to learn to be ‘safe and secure’ at home when learning to crawl, then stand up, and walk. If you had any brothers or sisters, your mother taught you the relationship skills involving the caring respect which becomes a loving relationship. The ‘mother-child’ relationship is very important in the development of a child capable of much future accomplishment The first five years are very important; the next 13 years involve others outside the family. These are usually child care professionals, baby-sitters, teachers, friends, and relatives.
Here at EO’s offices, I have, over 30 years, received glimpses of what a single mother does for her children. Several of our staff are single moms responsible for their children. The constant awareness and concern for the well-being of their children is a wonder to behold. It is simply a mother’s love in perpetual attention for the well-being of their children. Mothers are always on the alert and are always ready to enjoy the moment, react to needs, and to instruct or command. Mothers always want what is right and proper for their kids. And single moms merit especial recognition for what they accomplish without the supportive presence of the child’s father.
Today you can witness bits of this mother’s love. Recently a mother, Tafoya Graham, was captured on video, spotting her only son in a demonstration march in Baltimore. Mrs. Graham was recorded as she removed the ‘hoodie’ from her son’s head, grabbed him by the ear, and guided him away from that demonstration. When later interviewed, Mrs. Graham said, ‘That child is my only son, and I did not want him to become the next Freddie Gray.” Local police remarked, “We need more mothers who discipline their kids even if it involves a bit of physical abuse.” That mother did the right thing in the moment....an action which demonstrated her caring love for her boy who had reached that dangerous transitional age between being a child and becoming a rational young adult. That mother did not merit the derisive comments made by commentators who had no caring relationship with that boy-child.
My mother wept when my brothers Seville and Andrew were drafted (1941, WWII), when I volunteered (U.S. Regular Army, 1946), when Ralph served in South Korea, and when brother Lupe served (Vietnam). Looking back, I witnessed her praying that her boys would come home safely. As a devout Catholic practitioner, ‘Ma’ thanked God profusely. It was later that I realized that mothers reluctantly let each child become independent youths who may be equipped to define their own destiny in life rather than have that defined by others. She ensured that each one of us became educated to enable our defining our own destiny in life. She knew and practice the following: “if you want kids to understand and care, you must understand and care for them”. Take the time today to tell your MOM you love her; respect and honor what she did for you. Humankind would not exist without mothers.

San Jose CALIFORNIA As Sofia and William take the stage, they look out into a crowd of their peers where every graduating senior has been accepted to at least one 4-year university. On this day, students at Summit Tahoma and Rainier have come together to celebrate this incredible feat. As part of the White House’s National College Signing Day, all graduating seniors signed a pledge to invest in their education beyond high school, drive their own learning and success, and become thoughtful, contributing members of society. Sofia and William shared personal stories about their

journeys as the first in their family to go to college, and what that means to them and their families. Both have been accepted to their dream colleges. William, a Summit Rainier senior, says the journey to this moment was difficult, but he was supported every step of the way. “My time at Summit has taught me that you have to practice perseverance, and take control of your own education,” explained William. “Practicing independence and self-directed learning will be a great benefit at any college.” Sofia, a Summit Tahoma senior, shared “Even though I will be the first in my family to go to college, I am confident that I will succeed because of all that I learned at Summit, and through everything my

teachers at Summit did to prepare me for this next step.” For students at Summit, this is the rule - not the exception. All students graduate with the requirements to attend a 4-year university, and all seniors at Summit Tahoma and Rainier were admitted to at least one! What makes this possible? Summit Tahoma’s Executive Director, Nicholas Kim, says, “We deeply believe every student that comes through our doors can go to college, and every single teacher is invested in making that a reality. We get to know each student personally and make sure that he or she is performing at their best.” The school is able to achieve this because Summit schools are small and personalized. Students get individual support and are able to work at their
own pace. Students also have a mentor who coaches them throughout their four years on what they need to do to achieve their academic, personal, and college goals. This year, students at Summit Tahoma and Rainier have been accepted into an incredible variety of over 100 colleges including: nearly all California State Univer-
sities, numerous University of California schools such as Berkeley, Santa Barbara, and Davis, as wells as Cal Poly SLO, Washington University, Harvey Mudd College, Mills College, Duke University, Boston University, and Northeastern University. Summit Tahoma and Rainier are part of Summit Public Schools, which has a net-
work of 7 schools in the Bay Area. Summit Tahoma and Rainier serve close to 600 9th - 12th grade students in San Jose. Summit Tahoma will be moving to Oak Grove this summer, and Summit Rainier is located in East Valley. To learn more, please visit: www.summitps.org/ student-day.

NEWSUSA For the first time in modern history, America’s workforce spans four generations. In this new era of multigenerational workers, a “one size fits all” approach to health insurance is a thing of the past. The generational gap is as varied as it is immense. There are the young-adult Millennials, the middle-aged Gen Xers, Baby Boomers nearing retirement age and the Silent Generation in their 70s and beyond. Each group has vastly different health insurance needs. Take, for example, Millennials. A recent Bankrate survey shows many prefer health plans with lower deductibles and higher premiums. Meanwhile, Pew Research reports that the Baby Boomer population is hyperfocused on long-term care coverage needs and how best to manage associated costs beyond Medicare. This workforce shift is unprecedented and poses significant hurdles for businesses as they seek to provide affordable and appropriate health coverage options across employee lifespans. Both large and small group employers are impacted, though companies with 100 or fewer employees are more likely to feel the financial squeeze because there are fewer individuals to spread risk and defray costs.
•A multigenerational workforce means a new approach to health insurance.
healthcare insurance exchange solutions as an effective answer to meet the diversity of benefit needs from Generation Me to Generation We. “Private exchanges are marketplaces of health insurance and other related products,” according to management consulting group Booz Allen. They offer access to multiple health plans in a single, unified program and are attractive because they enable workers to individually select the right coverage for their current life needs. The private exchange platform provides an ideal bridge across generational divides. For example, a 22-year-old single female starting her first job out of college will likely want a different plan than the 59-year-old manager with a spouse, three children and plans to retire in the near future.
Juggling vastly different insurance coverage needs can be quite difficult, especially for the more than 28 million small businesses employing nearly half of all U.S. workers. Affordable Care Act legislation adds further complexity as companies assess their group health plan options, or in some cases whether to offer them at all. So, what are employers to do?
Employers are moving to these exchanges more quickly than forecasted, according to new data from consulting firm Accenture. The company estimates that some six million individuals signed up for workplace health coverage through private exchanges in 2014 alone, roughly two times the number expected. It’s predicted that private exchange participation will exceed public exchange enrollments by 2018, if not sooner.
In response, many are increasingly turning to private
Much of this expansion is driven by the combination
of health care reform and a workforce that now spans a 50-plus year spectrum. “At the heart of the solution is access to choice,” said Ron Goldstein, president and CEO of CHOICE Administrators, the nation’s leader in developing and administering employee-choice health benefit programs and exchanges for employer groups. The company’s exchanges include the country’s first and only multicarrier private exchange, CaliforniaChoice, as well as CaliforniaChoice 51+ and Choice Builder, the nation’s first ancillary exchange for dental, vision, chiropractic and other benefits. “Smart business owners are teaming with their broker to identify and select a platform that enables their employees to design plans that best fit their lifecycle needs.” The age of the four-generation workforce has dawned. Owners and small businesses are wise to embrace the private exchange that technology employees have come to rely on, such as online enrollment, as they seek to costeffectively address the needs of their workforce across all stages of their lives. scammer, one of whom lost $150.

Coon requires all of her employers at Care.com to go through a mandatory background check before she accepts offers since she received an email from the wheelchair scammer. Coon said that she has encountered many employers who refused to comply.
The story of a deaf mother in need of assistance for her son who uses a wheelchair compelled one SF State student into accepting a part-time nanny job. But her empathy almost cost her $3,000 in an online scam.
“Most of the time, it’s either because they aren’t who they say they are or it’s just because they don’t want to go through the trouble,” Coon said.
Sophomore Lauren Well signed up for Care.com, a third party website that employs users for family and home care, last November. Two weeks after she signed up, a person under the alias “Julia” contacted her about a caretaker job for her son “Joe.” The woman told Well through email that she and her son were moving to San Francisco from New York for a fresh start because she had lost her husband and a nine-month-old baby in the car crash that left her son in a wheelchair. “I felt my heart just kind of crunch up at this because I really wanted to help this woman out,” Well said. “I thought that she had gone through this huge ordeal and that she really needed somebody for her and her son while they were going through this really hard time.”
“Julia” hired Well without conducting a phone or inperson interview and gave Well the assignment of purchasing a wheelchair for her son as a first task. When “Julia” sent a $3,000 check in the mail, Well said she became skeptical. “She sent me the check via FedEx and when I got the check, it looked extremely suspicious,” Well said. “It came from a bank in New Orleans and when I tried to Google the bank, I couldn’t really find anything.”
Well went to the bank to deposit the check and the bank teller said that the money would not be available for two weeks because it had to go through a security clearance. After an extensive Google search, Well learned that she was one of several people lured into the same wheelchair scam. A user posted in an online scam forum the names, phone numbers and email addresses used as well as the content of emails from the scammer to the caretaker. Well said she imme-

And then when the check would have bounced, it would have been on me to pay that money.” SF State student Seazzia Castillo found herself involved in a different scam from the same website in January. Castillo said she accepted her first job at Care. com from a man who needed a personal assistant to run errands for him in the U.S. while he was in Australia. “I was under the impression that they (the employers) go through background checks as well,” Castillo said. “I don’t know how he got my mobile banking information but he had sent me over a copy of a check and said, ‘I’m depositing this over to your account.’” He sent Castillo a $2,500 check and told her to pocket $400 as her salary.
According to Castillo, the check didn’t clear but $200 of her salary did. She spent the money and later found out that her account dropped to -$171, the amount spent from her salary. The next day, her account dropped to -$2,500. After Castillo filed a police report, her account dropped to -$4,000. “Apparently the guy had deposited money into my account and then took it out before they could catch that it wasn’t a real check,” Castillo said. “I don’t know how he was able to do that but it was just so annoying.” Castillo said the bank reversed the overdraft fees and sent her what was in her savings and her last direct deposit. According to Castillo, the police said they couldn’t do much because they had to attend to more pressing issues SF State freshman and Care.com user Meredith Coon said she heard about the wheelchair scam through three of her friends who were contacted by a wheelchair
A safety guide outlined on the Care.com website urges members to use the monitored messaging system provided, be vigilant, conduct inperson interviews and contact them when a message or job offer seems like spam or a scam. The company also advises users to refuse check payments in amounts greater than agreed upon and to never transfer funds paid by check back to someone since that is a recognized Internet scamming technique. A representative of Care. com declined to be interviewed. Well continues to search for babysitting jobs through another third-party website, Urban Sitter, while maintaining her cashier job at Whole Foods. “I’ve had friends who have had great experiences with Care.com and I’ve had friends who have had less than wonderful experiences with Care.com,” Well said. “I think there’s always going to be people out there that are willing to go to lengths to scam people that are just trying to find a job.” The story was originally published in SF State’s Golden Gate Xpress.

RECIPE

MAY 8-14, 2015 San José and our outstanding team of employees and support the City Council to achieve our city’s goals.”
Experienced administrator has served in interim role since December
The San José City Council this week unanimously appointed Norberto Dueñas as the next city manager for the City of San José. A city employee for 30 years serving in multiple capacities, Dueñas has served as interim
city manager since December 2014 following the resignation of former city manager Ed Shikada. Prior to becoming interim city manager, Dueñas had served as deputy city manager
since 2008 overseeing a wide range of neighborhood and community service functions including libraries, housing, and parks and recreation services. “Norberto has demonstrated strong, effective, and calm leadership throughout his career with our city, and especially during our recent period of transition for the City Council, management, and our entire organization,” said San José Mayor Sam Liccardo. “I am delighted that we have the right person for the job already within our organization. “I have great confidence that Norberto, with his deep knowledge and experience, will both serve the people of
Under the San José City Charter, the city manager serves as the city’s chief administrative officer and reports directly to the City Council. The city manager is responsible for administration of day-to-day municipal operations and the implementation of council policies. The city manager is also responsible for overseeing San José’s $3 billion annual budget and the City’s 5,700 employee workforce. “This is a tremendous honor, and I look forward to continuing with working with our City Council and leading our staff,” Dueñas said. “After our recent years of sacrifice and financial challenges, I believe we’re now on a good path to accomplish great things. However, I also know that any success I will have will also depend on the excellent talent and dedication of our managers and employees
who get the job done for our community every day.” Dueñas started his city career in 1985 as a Council assistant and chief of staff for former Councilmember Jim Beall, and later as a senior budget and policy analyst for former Mayor Susan Hammer. After four years in the City Manager’s Office as Council liaison, he became a division manager in the Housing Department in 1999. He became deputy executive director for the San José Redevelopment Agency in 2006. From December 2013 to May 2014, Dueñas also served as interim assistant city manager, the city’s number two staff position. Dueñas is the first Latino to serve as San José City Manager. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s in public administration, both from San José State University. A resident of San José with his family, he will continue at his current annual salary of $250,000.

Suzanne Potter CALIFORNIA NEWS SERVICE LOS ANGELES - Police are warning pet owners about a dog-napping scam, one that highlights a sharp national increase in stolen pets. Recently, two women in green uniforms showed up at a house in Echo Park falsely claiming to be with the Los Angeles Police Department Animal Cruelty Task Force. They told the pet owner there had been multiple complaints about the animal being abused. They showed him an official-looking flier with LAPD’s real phone number and they confiscated the

dog, which is still missing. Madeline Bernstein, president with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, says this sort of thing is more common than you might think. “It happens all the time,” says Bernstein. “There’s a report of somebody impersonating an animal control officer. People have fake ID’s. They get fake uniforms. It’s easy.” The LAPD says people should ask for a badge and I.D. if anyone in uniform shows up at your door. According to the American Kennel Club, pet theft has gone up by a staggering amount nationally with 637 cases reported in 2014 versus only 67 in 2008 an

increase of 900 percent. Bernstein says pet thieves have a variety of motives. “It can be anything,” says Bernstein. “It can be somebody stealing the dog and asking for a ransom. It could be somebody who is mad at the dog ‘cause the dog was barking too much. It could be somebody who feels that they could take better care of the dog. There are any number of reasons why people will do something like this.”
•There is a rising number of pet thefts across the nation.
The Kennel Club says the most commonly stolen types of dogs in 2014 were pit bulls, Yorkshire terriers, chihuahuas, bulldogs, Pomeranian and shih tzus.
Doug Moss & Roddy Scheer EARTHTALK Teaching our kids about sustainability and green living is one of the most important things we can do to safeguard the future of humanity and the planet we inhabit. The North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) reports that environmental education teaches children how to learn about and investigate their environment and to make intelligent, informed decisions about sustainability. Furthermore, learning about the environment is multi-disciplinary, so it allows teachers a rare opportunityto integrate different parts of the their curriculum while challenging students to think about the big picture. Thankfully, teachers today have a plethora of resources for incorporating sustainability in their lessons and activities. One great resource is Green Teacher, a quarterly magazine dedicated to helping educators promote environmental awareness among young people aged six through 19. The magazine offers perspectives on the role of education in creating a sustainable future and provides lots of ready-to-use activities. Another great resource is the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s “Energy Kids” website, which provides teachers with energy related stories, hands-on activities and research articles for their classrooms. Free, easy-to-access lesson plans allow students from K-12 to have fun learning about different forms of energy and why some are better for the environment than others. The website also offers biographies of scientists that discovered the energy sources we use today, energy timelines that show how different energy sources and technologies have evolved, and stats on topics like what renewable fuel the U.S. uses most. about their environment is to start a school garden—planted and tended by the kids themselves. According to KidsGardening.org, school gardens build an understanding of and respect for nature and our environment while motivating kids to eat and love fruits and vegetables. Gardening also teaches children to nurture and care for other living things while

Daniel Ngo SPECIAL TO EL OBSERVADOR Gaming has changed a lot, starting with personal home systems, gaming cabinets as a hole in a wall, which then evolved into portable systems, back to personal home systems, and into what we have now as a legitimized spectator sport. AFK Lounge is a throwback to when you would run over to your friends house to see who was fastest in Mario Kart 64 or hitch a ride to an internet cafe to boot up Counter Strike 1.5. AFK Lounge can be described as both a definite “nostalgia hit” for the internet cafe era and a meshing of a high-end bar. AFK is definitely a step above the typical bar in San Jose. The prices definitely reflect that aspect. AFK was built off the Los Gatos Brewing Company so the decor is pretty classic, it also doesn’t hurt there’s about 10 flat screen mounted streaming various popular online PC games such as DOTA, SC2, and Counter Strike. The prices are a bit high in general, console rentals are $15/hr for a Playstation 4, or an Xbox One. PCs also have varied prices, and even a monthly membership ($50). The space is large, and definitely doesn’t feel crowded. Their
basement is filled with PCs and seats, the bar is pretty average, and the kitchen is in the open so you can watch your food getting prepped. The real question is are they worth visiting over, let’s say an established place like Dave and Busters, or heading to a friends house with a 6-pack and extra controllers? From my personal experience I’d say its getting there. The night started off well but slowly rolled downhill at AFK. The group I went with first got our hands stamped (a proof of being over 21), the hostess seemed a bit overwhelmed but gave us a quick overview before she became even more crowded with guests. We then proceeded to look around before settling anywhere. The lounge has a back patio that is expansive and exquisite, and that is perfect for Giant Jenga, which by the way they have several sets of. Once we put our names on the the list for a console rental for our group, a Playstation 4 for some Mortal Kombat X (the newest of the classic, bloody fighting series), the service started to degrade a bit. When we finally got our station, and prepared for a brutal ego bashing, our hostess was perplexed why the
controllers were not syncing up properly to the Playstation 4 and had to return later with another employee, which luckily didn’t eat into our time but did take awhile (we were comped an extra 30 minutes for our initial syncing woes). The waitress took our initial drink orders and proceeded to bring them out, and they were pretty good, but unfortunately we never saw her again throughout the night. Do not get me wrong, I like this place, it’s one of the few gaming lounges and bars in California, so rare that it’s technically only the 2nd gaming lounges, according to their Facebook page. It still has kinks, their service is slow the minute it hits peak service hour (9:00pm and on), their employees aren’t familiar with the equipment, some of their gaming system are running on VGA cables (we live in a high def society now), and the environment is still a bit mixed between underaged kids who just want to play video games and adults who want to get inebriated as they annihilate their friends in a social setting. I definitely see potential in this place, give them a few months, fix their little problems and it’ll definitely be a gaming/night life landmark in San Jose and the Bay Area. But for now, definitely a decent alternative to Dave and Busters.

Veronica T. Avendaño EL OBSERVADOR San Francisco’s International Beer festival brings together more than 80 different breweries from across the globe to help raise funds for Telegraph Hill Nursery School. These past few years, Latino based and inspired beers are on the rise. Breweries are finding themselves tapping into a new market and new style by infusing more Latino tropical flavors and spices. The industry is in the beginning stages of a Latino craft beer period of creation and this year’s festival is no exception to that. Below is our guide to this year’s Latino style brews. Blue Moon Brewing Company Don’t reach for the orange slice just yet. Earlier this year, Founder Keith Villa found influence in his culture and created his version of horchata. The Cinnamon Horchata Ale, released earlier this year, is made from long-grain rice. The company recommends pairing the creamy brew with soft cheeses, desserts, and chocolate.
Corona This well known Mexican import will be making an appearance at the festival. The classic beachside treat with a lime on top is blended with a hint of malt. Coronado Brewing This San Diego based brewery focuses heavily on island inspired influences. But seasonally, in the month of May, the company releases it’s Señor Saison: Belgian Ale with Jalapeño. The brew takes a new spin on the standard Belgian ale as it is mixed with agave syrup, white sage, Belgian candied sugar, and jalapenos to create a fusion of cultures. El Toro Brewing Co. The Acevedo family began brewing in the early 90s. The Morgan Hill company is recognized for their Poppy Jasmine Amber ale, a darker brew created with caramel and chocolate. With a variety of classic brew styles in their arsenal they also have a selection of fruit beers for those who wish to indulge in something a little lighter.
Half Moon Bay Brewing Co. The company released a Peruvian herb infused beer to help a good cause. The ‘Not for Sale’ Ale is created with the Cat’s claw herb, honey, ginger and hibiscus. This Belgian saison was created in collaboration with the nonprofit, Not for Sale.
Modelo Especial/ Negra Modelo Another top Mexican import. Both the light and dark beers are a popular bar staple. Especial is a lighter beer created with malted barley to become a pilsner beer. Negra, the top dark beer Mexican import, also created from malted barley, is infused with yeast, rice, and even dark chocolate. Rogue Farms Chipotle is more than just a spot for burritos. Rogue Farms created a malty brew spiced with Chipotle peppers for a kick. The company recommends pairing this brew with meats like pork or poultry.
