Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR Let's first review the history of how this holiday came to be what it is today: a three-day holiday (Saturday-Sunday-Monday). The Federal Government, during 1971, gave its federal government employees this three-day holiday which includes and celebrates the last Monday during the month of May as Memorial Day. Memorial Day was formerly called Decoration Day since May 1868. Now it is a federal holiday in USA for remembering all those persons who died while serving in this country's military forces. This holiday, which is now observed every year on the last Monday of May, will be held on Monday, May 28, 2018. It was first known as “Decoration Day” because after the 1865 end of the Civil War, during which this American nation lost 600,000 lives (counting both 'The North' and 'The Confederate South's casualties). All communities had their local war dead. One New York community closed its businesses in order to honor its dead by decorating with flags & flowers each grave after 'cleaning it up'. General John A. Logan encouraged the entire nation to do the same on May 30, 1868. Some 5,000 widows, family members, and others decorated the 20,000 graves of both Northern and
After World War I, during which 130,000 American military personnel were killed, America honored these dead with its Unknown Soldier Monument of 192l. World War II followed with its 416,800 KIA's. More wars followed: Korean Conflict, Vietnam (55,000 KIA's), Desert Storm, Iraq, and today, after 16 years, America is still at war against Terrorists in the Mid-East. “Every day, memories of World War II—its sights and sounds, its terrors and triumphs—disappear. Yielding to the inalterable process of aging, the men and women who fought and won the great conflict are now in their late 80s and 90s. They are dying quickly—according to US Department of Veterans Affairs statistics, 558,000 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II are alive in 2017.” (Source: World War II Museum, New Orleans, LA.) Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time. It is unclear where exactly this tradition originated. Numerous different communities may have independently initiated their memorial remembrance gatherings. It was on May 5, 1868 when General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide DECORATIOON DAY of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868,
was designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late (Civil War) rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. So, at 3:00 PM, Monday, May 28, 2018, (this year's MEMORIAL DAY), I plan to ask the guests at our home to take a minute of silence during which each remembers and meditates about a 'fallen military person' they cared for and knew personally. In my own family I have two brothers (WW II veterans) who are now dead...Seville and Andrew may not have been 'KIA'S (KILLED IN ACTIN), but both experienced front line combat which changed their persona. We all know someone with that outcome. We need to honor not only our KIA's but also those who survived and came home as WOUNDED WARRIORS, changed forever. Consider this reality: Most elected officials are over the age of 45. It is these 'elderly elected officials', many of whom have never served in any military capacity ( just like Mr. Trump and other former Presidents), who 'send our military personnel 'off to war'. All elected U.S. Congress persons end up being 'wealthy' or well off. It is the sons and daughters of lower income folks who volunteer, as I did in 1946, for military service as a 'gate-opener' to future opportunity. It is these young military volunteers who end up being wounded warriors or KIA's.
As these service persons age, their initial retirement income levels become insufficient while health concerns related to aging increase. A requirement for assisted care or just companionship increases. These essential services are usually provided for by their wives, sons and daughters or other concerned compassionate individuals. I bring this issue up because the Veteran's Administration officials have just proposed a bill in the U.S. Congress which would provide support and monetary allowances to these providers of “in the home care”. Those who are related to an elderly veteran who needs assistance or companionship are providing a service which would have been delivered by 'a paid attendant' in an assisted care facility or nursing home. This bill merits your support. Simply call your local member of U.S. Congress to say that you support this 'Assisted Care for Veterans' legislation. If these veterans, now being maintained and assisted in their homes were in a Veteran's Administration Hospital, there would be a great need for more V.A. hospital facilities and more trained 'elderly-care personnel' on their payrolls. Phone local members of the U.S. Congress such as Anna Eshoo, Zoe Lofgren, and Ro Khanna. First look up under 'Government' in your phone book to learn who your local U.S. Congressional representative may be. Know that your phone calls or Emails will result in some sort of responsible action. Personally, as a WW II veteran, I personally have outlived all my former high school chums
and military buddies. I am fortunate in that my daughter Maria Socorro, checks in on me and my wife every two days or so. She is planning a Memorial Day BBQ at my home. I plan to ask our 14 guests at 3:00 PM PST to pray and meditate in silence about some former KIA military person they knew and include someone 'who came back as a WOUNDED WARRIOR'. 'WE, THE PEOPLE' must give thanks to and appreciate those who made it possible for each of us to live in a nation that allows its citizens and residents to 'pursue life while having liberty and the many government agency services which our taxes underwrite. We all enjoy a standard of living which has been paid for by the lives, blood, sweat, and tears of our antecedents. And, since its formation, America has been a very diversely populated nation. Its democratic form of governance needs our urgent support today to ensure its realignment with truths, facts, and equitable distribution of its wealth in whose creation we all have participated. I do not believe that Divine Providence meant for just a few oligarchists to own everything and enjoy life while depriving the rest of us of some fair measure of the same. ENJOY YOUR MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY. At 3:00 PM, do remember to honor those who made it possible. It would be a good gesture to give our KIA's and Wounded Warriors one minute of silent appreciative and thankful meditation and prayer. Let's make MEMORIAL DAY more than just a 3-day holiday.
GIG ECONOMY'S IMPACTS OVERESTIMATED, STUDY SAYS SUNDAY- 9:30AM
SATURDAY- 5:30PM

MULTICULTURAL ARTS SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM AT MISSION CULTURAL CENTER, SF Approximately 833,000 people drive for Uber in a year, which would account for 0.56 percent of all employment. But on average drivers work 17 hours per week and just three months. Photo Credit: Thought Catalog/Unsplash
Eric Galatas Public News Service DENVER – The nation is making progress toward full employment, according to recent data, but don't rush to attribute that to the so-called gig economy. A new report from the Economic Policy Institute shows the impact of tech companies such as Uber is overrated. Lawrence Mishel, a distinguished fellow with the institute, says widely publicized hourly earnings for Uber drivers frequently leave out expenses the independent contractors have to cover, including more than 30 percent in fees the company takes off the top, health insurance premiums, and significant wear and tear on their vehicles. "And they have to pay extra taxes for Social Security and Medicare that regular workers don't,” Mishel points out. “And it turns out they get paid around $9.21 an hour. And that's in spite of the fact that half the Uber drivers actually have a college degree." Uber drivers generate nearly $25 an hour in passenger fares, but Mishel says the company takes more than $8 of that upfront in fees. The standard mileage expense for gas and maintenance dings drivers for another $5 an hour, and after taxes and a bare bones benefits package,
drivers walk away with just over $9 an hour. Mishel notes that's significantly lower than the $32 an hour on average that private sector workers get, and it's also well below the $15 an hour earned by service occupation workers.

An Uber representative says the report ignores the flexibility drivers say they value and cannot find in traditional jobs. The report also suggests that the gig economy may not be the future of employment, a boast Mishel says platform-based companies frequently make. He says Uber, with more than 800,000 drivers in a given year, accounts for as much as two-thirds of the total gig economy. But drivers only work three months out of the year and 17 hours per week, on average. Mishel says for most drivers, it's about earning supplementary income. "So you can't have a future of of things that supplement your job,” he states. “The future of has to be people having their jobs."

Mishel acknowledges that Uber has had a big impact on the transportation sector, but he says it would be unwise to count on tech platforms to reverse the biggest challenges facing a majority of the nation's workers: wage stagnation over 40 years, and pay disparities for women and people of color.

Aproximadamente 150 no tienen hogar.

STEP UP SILICON VALLEY CELEBRATES 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY & LAUNCH OF FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND NONPROFIT DATA TECH

On Wednesday May 16 Step Up Silicon Valley, a branch of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County focusing on poverty reduction, outreach and support, celebrated its 10-year anniversary along with the announcement of their new collaborative inter-agency technology. With the help of seed funding from partner Cisco Systems, the tech-centric system allows nonprofit agencies to track clients across the spectrum of various agencies within Santa Clara County which, according to the organization, should help nonprofits focus on their clients gaining economic self-sufficiency. The importance of the first-of-its-kind system was a highlight of the event hosted at Santa Clara State University. Attendees included Almaz Negash, the Managing Director of Step Up Silicon Valley, and Gregory R. Kepferle, the CEO of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County. The goal of this new system is to aid community organizations to track progress and services throughout the region in organizations which help in the realms of financial, education, housing and health care assistance, amongst others. “Creating systems change is hard work, but it is possible,” said Negash. “Challenging poverty itself can seem like jousting at windmills. But even a small team of passionate, smart, committed

Changes to SNAP should reflect the unique needs of young adults BRANDON STRATFORD Child Trends
Federal officials are currently considering legislative and regulatory changes to a federal food assistance program (SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) that would further restrict eligibility for “Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents.” Given that the transition from youth to adulthood is challenging under the best of circumstances—after all, the brain is still under development—it is concerning that the unique needs of young adults have been largely left out of these discussions. Because many young adults who meet the income requirements for SNAP—including youth aging out of foster care, young adults experiencing homelessness, low-income college students, and young adults who were formerly incarcerated—also face a number of other challenges, any policy changes that could reduce their access to food assistance should be based firmly in the evidence of what works for this age group. Under current food assistance eligibility standards, low-income young adults who do not have a disability and are not parents
can’t receive SNAP benefitsfor more than three months during a three-year period unless they can prove they are working or attending school at least 20 hours per week, or participating in a work training program. This spring, House lawmakers introduced a reauthorization bill to require all ablebodied adults without dependents to work 20 hours per week, rising to 25 hours in 2026, with no three-month eligibility period or time limit. In exchange, the proposal would increase funding for employment training programs and require states to make training slots available to anyone who qualifies. While the bill was voted down, lawmakers face a fall 2018 deadline—when the statutory authorization for the program expires. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has signaled its interest in new regulations that strengthen work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents. It’s hard to know exactly how such changes might affect vulnerable populations of youth. Currently, the USDA does not break down its statistics on able-bodied adults without dependents by age, which means that readily available data group together all adults ages 18 to 50. However, if we look
These projects have included Pay for Success, Franklin McKinley Children’s Initiative, Franklin McKinley Women’s Initiative, San Jose Business
at the three pathways to SNAP eligibility (see below) with respect to this population, it becomes clear that young adults are likely to be affected differently than older adults, and therefore should receive special consideration. Minimum work hours Young adults under age 25 experience unemployment at a rate that is two to three times higher than for other working-age adults. This suggests that young adults may have more trouble meeting the work requirement than their older counterparts. While the spring reauthorization bill would have required states to make work training slots available to help individuals find work, it’s not clear that these programs will adequately meet the unique needs of young adults. Minimum school hours This pathway to SNAP eligibility is somewhat complex because, with some exceptions, most college students who meet the income requirements for SNAP must still meet the current 20-hour work requirement. This is particularly concerning given a recent report from the Hope Lab at the University of Wisconsin, which found that nearly one in three university students had experienced food insecurity in the past 30 days. This function will be provided by the porting of data from individual agency systems to the central Data Integration System, while allowing each agency to use their own separate databases. • Maintain a Registry of Services for participating agencies. Through collected information, a Registry of Services will be a current and accurate listing of all resources and services provided by participating agencies. • Expand the collaborative system to other local communities. With the scalable technology, additional agencies can join the collaborative system, increasing the number of services provided, benefitting the clients and each agency. Negash added, “We know that this new approach to fighting poverty will make an impact for our community members who can barely make ends meet.”
USDA-funded study of 10 pilot sites across the nation may offer some insights, the study won’t be completed until 2020. Early findings suggest that most training sites have had trouble keeping participants actively engaged in services, and none of the 10 sites report a focus on young adults. Emerging evidence from the field of youth development suggests that apprenticeshipprograms and positive youth development approaches can enhance the effectiveness of workforce development programs for youth, but more research is needed—especially on how linking program attendance to SNAP eligibility may change program effectiveness. And while consensus may be building, many rigorous evaluations of youth workforce development programs have found mixed results. For example, a recent review that identified several effective programs found that none had consistently positive effects across all three domains of education, employment, or earnings outcomes, and that many short-term improvements were not maintained over time. Federal officials should seek to better understand what works for youth transitioning into adulthood under challenging circumstances to avoid establishing additional barriers to their success. Pilot-testing of promising approaches and evaluating the effects of current state options on young adults can identify strategies that could be scaled up to improve the prospects for vulnerable young.

LAWSUIT SEEKS RELEASE OF GAY MAN FROM ICE DETENTION
NATIVE AMERICAN CANDIDATES RISING IN 2018 ELECTIONS Eric Tegethoff Public News Service
BILLINGS, Mont. – The number of Native Americans running for political office is surging across the country this year. More than 100 candidates representing both parties have entered contests, according to Mark Trahant, editor of Indian Country Today – with Montana seeing the highest number of any state, at 17. Trahant says these numbers are record breaking. "I've been chronicling this for quite a while,” he states. “About six years I've been building a database and every cycle, it starts to get a little bit bigger. And this year, it just kind of went off the map, and Montana is a great example with the sheer number of candidates."
In 2017, 64 percent of "at large" undocumented immigrants arrested by the ICE field office in Philadelphia had no criminal convictions. Photo Credit: USDHS
Andrea Sears Public News Ser vice PHILADELPHIA – A habeas petition has been filed in federal district court seeking the release of a gay Mexican immigrant being held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement de tention in York Prison. In Januar y Jose Nuñez Martinez and his husband, a U.S. citizen, were attending what they thought was a routine marriage inter view at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Ser vices office in Philadelphia. According to Miguel Andrade, an organizer with Juntos – an immigrants' rights organization – ICE agents burst in and arrested Nuñez Martinez, and he has been held in detention ever since despite being cleared by USCIS. "They approved their marriage petition,” says Andrade. “ They also believe he has a credible asylum petition because of his sexuality. He fears re taliation for going back home. There is no valid reason for him to still be in detention." He says ICE claims Nuñez Martinez is a flight risk and poses a threat
to society. T he lawsuit, filed by the ACLU of Pennsylvania, says his detention is unlawful and seeks his release. The Trump administration claims that its depor tation program is taking dangerous criminals out of the countr y. But Andrade says recent ICE raids in Philadelphia netted about 50 people, some with past minor offenses such as traffic tickets and some with ongoing criminal cases. "So right now Immigration is ac tually inter fering with the right to due process of all of these individuals and violating people's constitutional rights left and right,” says Andrade.

Trahant says it's important to note that many of the candidates are young, and many are women. He says if even a handful win races for Montana legislative seats, there would be a higher percentage of Native Americans in the Legislature than in the population. In neighboring Idaho last week, Paulette Jordan handily won the Democratic primary
for governor. If she wins in November, Jordan would be the first Native American governor in the country's history. Trahant says another impressive trend is that many candidates are running to represent urban areas. Jade Bahr, a member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe, is one example. She hopes to represent Billings in the state House. "It's almost like it's a sort of global consciousness that we're all feeling some similar pressures, and we're ready to just be bold and step up, and be a voice for our communities,” she states. “So, I think it's wonderful." Bahr says Standing Rock could be inspiring Native Americans to run. For her, the catalyst was the Women's March. Bahr was born on the Crow Indian Reservation, but grew up in Billings. She says many people in the city are facing the same issues folks on the reservation face. "Coming from a reservation, there's a huge community aspect and I feel like the whole tribe is my family,” she states. “And I translate that to Billings as well, because I want to build community, I want to make it stronger." The Montana primary is June 5.

He says although undoc umented, Nuñez Mar tinez had lived a peaceful and produc tive life in this countr y for almost 17 years. Andrade adds that, along with the lawsuit, advocates are hoping to rally public suppor t for the call for Nuñez Mar tinez to be released from detention. "We're hoping that he'll be able to be free some time soon and continue his immigration case on the outside alongside his husband,” says Andrade.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT E3 2018 Eduardo Hilario El Observador With E3 2018 just around the corner, the anticipation for new games, sequels or new franchises, is looming just around the bend, if not already here. As a gamer, I am quite excited to see what is announced and what is to be released in the coming months. For those wondering, E3 is the Electronic Entertainment Expo held every June at the Los Angeles convention center and is huge gaming convention where developers and innovators of new gaming tech, come to show off their new game or new hardware for games. With the coming of another E3, comes the possibility for new franchises, or the comeback of a familiar face. I was extremely excited with the news that Spyro, a fictional dragon from games such as “Spyro the Dragon” and “Spyro: Year of the Dragon”,

With the recent release of “Beat Saber”, a VR game that is essentially a rhythm game with lightsabers, a whole world of rhythm games can come to life like they did in the early 2000’s with games like the Rock Band and Guitar Hero series. As well, as other VR genres like action games, horror games and last but not least, puzzle games.

E3 2018 is just around the corner and my anticipation is at an all time high. With gaming technology only getting better and better, we’re in for a treat when it comes to new game play mechanics, Graphics and all around sound quality. Many gamers will be there and even more will be watching the event via live streams from sites such as YouTube and Twitch, all eagerly awaiting the announcements this year for games and tech that they will be using for years to come. I’M IN THE MARKET FOR A NEW ACOUSTIC GUITAR AND I’M WONDERING WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS IF I CARE ABOUT ITS IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT? Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EarthTalk
“legally acquired in accordance with domestic and international regulations” regarding trafficking in rare or endangered species and are “ethically sourced” from trees “individually harvested in a manner that leaves the rest of the forest and ecological system as undisturbed as possible.”
The fact that the so-called “tonewoods” (mahogany, rosewood, spruce, ebony) that guitar makers have relied on for almost two centuries are now harder and harder (and much more expensive) to come by has left guitar makers scrambling to support replanting efforts in far flung locales and looking for sustainable alternatives that still imbue their instruments with pleasing tonal characteristics and eye-catching good looks. "Our beloved Brazilian rosewood was taken from us more than 25 years ago [and then] Adirondack spruce was logged out,” reports Bob Taylor, founder of Taylor Guitars, a leading manufacturer of topquality acoustic guitars that has been on the front lines of greener sourcing. “Today we see the signs of our current woods being diminished to a point of unavailability.” To help counteract this industry-disrupting trend, Taylor launched a project in 2017 in partnership with the non-profit Congo Basin Institute to help local communities in Cameroon develop and plant different varieties of ebony to boost stocks of the now rare wood prized for use in guitar necks. “Our goal is to leave a lot more than we are taking,” says Taylor. Cameroon wants to scale up the Ebony Project —
And Canada’s Seagull, which hires local talent at its factories and prides itself on its use of reclaimed wood and its support of replanting projects, is yet another pioneer in sustainable acoustic guitar manufacturing.

Another way to avoid depleting wood reserves is by going for a guitar made out of another alternative material. Luna’s Safari Bamboo is a 3/4 size acoustic guitar constructed out of sustainable bamboo and perfect for travelers. McPherson, Emerald, RainSong and KLOS all make high quality guitars out of carbon fiber. Meanwhile, Blackbird uses Ekoa, a bio composite derived from linen fiber and plant resin, instead of wood in its guitars. Of course, the greening of guitars isn’t limited to acoustics. Big electric guitar manufacturers like Fender, Gibson, PRS, Ibanez, Yamaha and others have also been shifting toward sustainably harvested woods and alternative materials as well. And eco-conscious rockers will appreciate Finland’s Flaxwood, which makes svelte-looking electric guitars out of a proprietary composite that reinforces injection-molded thermoplastics with flax-based natural fibers.

Q&A: THE MUNDO OF “VIDA” Behind the Scenes of the East L.A. - Set TV Show with Melissa Barrera
because they both thought that they were too much, they were too big for their small neighborhood and they wanted to grow, they wanted to have a better life, as many of us do when we move out of our hometowns. I know I did as well. They have to come back to East L.A. when their mother dies, to bury her and to deal with her unfinished business, the inheritance and all that. And they think they’re gonna be able to do that quickly and get back to their lives, and then they discover that their mother was married to a woman, and that they now have to share the inheritance with her and have to deal with all of the mess that she left behind.
Arturo Hilario El Observador
Melissa Barrera is a Mexican actress whose current project, “Vida”, is playing on the Starz network. The show sets up a family dilemma for two estranged sisters, Emma and Lyn, who must head back home to East Los Angeles after the death of their mother and settle her unfinished affairs. In the show, Barrera stars as Lyn, who can be described as a millennial party girl trope at first glance. But as Barrera will point out, the looks are deceiving. “Vida” showrunner Tanya Saracho, a playwright whose past projects have been Latinx-centric, follows up those projects with a writers’ room of mostly Latinx and queer women who have attempted to provide an honest and well-rounded account of the diverse life around Latinx L.A. with this show. In the following interview Barrera gives us insight into the world of “Vida”, learning East L.A. slang, and how she connects to the show’s characters through the intimate writing and cultural ties. Thanks for taking time to answer our questions Melissa. To start off, what is it that attracted you personally to “Vida”? I think it was a no brainer for me and probably every other Latinx actor in L.A. and in the United States because it’s a show that doesn’t really come around often, one where the Latinx community has an opportunity to be at the forefront of a TV show and to be able to tell our stories. I personally already knew about Tanya’s work, I was familiar with the play “Fade”, and I knew that she had a very authentic voice. When I found out that she was creating the show I was like, “I want to be a part of it. I don’t care what it is.” Then I read the breakdown of Lyn, and I completely saw myself in the character. I thought, “This is perfect for me. I can do this.” And I was lucky enough to get called back to meet Tanya and [Casting Director] Carmen Cuba, do a series of very nerve wracking callbacks, and eventually get offered the part. From your perspective, what is the story of “Vida” about? The story is about two second generation MexicanAmerican sisters that grew up in East L.A. and left
Your character, Lyn, arrives from the Bay Area at the beginning of the show. Could you tell me a bit about Lyn, and her motivations when we are first introduced to her? Lyn is a very interesting character because at the beginning we see her, and you see the millennial girl, you see the trendy, hipster girl that that goes by in the world pretending to be very worry free, very social and “party-party”, and that’s all that she cares about. In reality, she is very lost. She doesn’t know who she is, and she’s been running away from her roots, a Mexican heritage, and just kind of using her “mexicaness” to her advantage; her exoticness, to seduce men, to seduce friends, with her exotic look and features. But, in reality she doesn’t know who she is because she's been giving value to herself by what others see in her, she hasn’t really found her purpose in life. And although she pretends that she’s very happy and she just goes with the flow, that nothing really phases her, she is hiding a lot of discomfort and pain and unhappiness in her life, and the way she has been living it. She is constantly seeking love in whatever unconventional way people may take. She’s just trying to find answers all around. She’s trying to see where she fits in, in her family dynamic, in the community, in the world. Which is true to a lot of children of immigrants I think, to a lot of people with dual heritage that are stuck in a limbo between not being American enough, and not being Mexican enough, or Puerto Rican enough, or Asian enough, whatever their dual heritage is I think it’s true to a lot of people. That will resonate with a lot of people that watch this show. In terms of when you were fleshing out how you would portray the character, how much input did you have in figuring out what Lyn would sound like, what she would say, and how she would react to situations? Well, Tanya is really sneaky about a lot of things because when I got cast the show wasn’t written. The pilot was written, it changed a lot to what ended up being in the first episode, but we had sessions with the writers where we would go in and tell them a little about us, about our stories, about who we are. I think it was just so they could get a feel for us and they could make the character very close to our hearts. It ended up being that. I would go in and read an episode and be like, “Wait a minute, I said this to the writers.” And it just made it so much easier to connect because they made them have similar insecurities and some of the same vocabulary and
reactions to things, and history even. So that made it easier to connect, but also scarier to act because when we had to go into certain themes you would feel very vulnerable. You don’t feel like you’re acting at all, you feel like it’s just yourself putting everything out there, bearing your soul and your heart, and everything. So, I think that is why you can see a lot of truth in the show. There's a lot of all of us in there and I think that’s what makes our writers so good and so special, they got to know us first and then they wrote the show. The voices are so real. Speaking on the writers, most of the writers’ room is made up of women yes? We have one writer who is a man, and the rest are women. And they’re all Latinx. I think half of the room is queer. So, it’s a very cool, talented writers’ room that Tanya put together. With that in mind, the themes in the show and the characters that are coming from LGBTQ experiences, it seems like there is definitely a production side that is fostering inclusiveness. Yeah, Tanya is really big on “inclusive”, and being inclusive in all aspects. From the crew, to the writers’ room, to the department heads to the cast. We have a nonbinary actor, Ser Anzoategui. We had trans actors come in and be guest stars. We even had something amazing! In episode four a man that Lyn meets, Jackson, he is playing white, but he is actually Cuban. So, it was like the opposite of whitewashing, like brownwashing or whatever. Which is amazing because Latinos have had to deal with whitewashing a lot in the industry where they cast white actors to play people of color and now Tanya got the chance to do that but the other way around, which I think just shows how much of a badass Tanya is. Being a Latina on the show, what would you say are some examples of moments or themes in “Vida” that you related to on a personal level? Well everything. “Señoras” [Editor’s Note: These are people who can foretell the future and reveal influences in the past through methods like card reading] like the “limpias”. I grew up around that, it was very familiar to me. My mom to this day cleans my whole body with an egg every time she's with me because that protects me against “evil eye”. The language too, the Spanglish. I grew up near the border in Mexico and I grew up going to an American school. I would speak English at school then speak Spanish [elsewhere] and that kind of makes the wires cross. So sometimes you don’t know how to say a word in Spanish and you say it in English and vice versa. And that is where the “pocha” thing was very familiar to me. Also, the eastside of LA, it’s such a magical place. It has so much culture and the people are so warm, and it reminds me of Mexico a lot. I took trips to research the east side and get familiar with the area because I was new to LA, so I didn’t really know the city and much less the specific neighborhood. I went, and I felt like I was back in Mexico City where I had been living for the past 5 years, and I understood why it was so important to show this side of east LA. You don’t really get to see it on TV, we get to see the gangster side, the dangerous side, but it’s honestly such a wonderful place. I’m so happy that I get to be on a show where it’s represented honestly, the way that it actually is. I was looking at the list of “Vida” terminology and slang words used in the show, and was wondering if you had a favorite term or one you might have not known before the show that was interesting to you?
ARTS
17
I had never heard of the term, “rascuache”*. I was like, “What does that mean?” Tanya explained it to me, the word itself sounds like what it means. It was a word that I didn’t know. I feel like slang changes from region to region. I’m currently in New Mexico, which has a very big Hispanic population. It’s the only state in the United States that has a majority Hispanic population and the slang here is different. So, I had to learn a little bit of the east side slang for the show. The cool thing about it too is that if you’re a Latino from wherever you are you are going to be able to connect with the show. And if you are not. If you are from some other heritage, then you’re still going to be able to connect and I think that the Spanglish is dealt with in a way where even if you don’t speak the language you can still understand what they’re saying in context. I think that is why Tanya didn’t want subtitles, she was like, “I don’t want this to be a subtitled show because we don’t need the subtitles, I think people will be able to get what we’re saying.” And of course, if you understand Spanish, then you’re in, you’re on the inside joke. I think it’s a generalization for everyone, it’s an American show. What has been your most memorable experience or aspect in being part of “Vida”? Well I think I have a lot of moments, but one recent one that I had was at a screening in Boyle Heights at a theater with a lot of community of Boyle Heights, which was nerve wracking for us because we shot a little bit in Boyle Heights and basically [were] representing them, who have lived in this area for so long, and we didn’t know what to expect. If they were going to react well or they were going to be mad. We screened two episodes and then we had a food mingling thing after to talk to the patrons of the theater and I was eating flautas and enchiladas and all the good food that they had there, and a woman comes up to me and taps me on the shoulder and she’s like, “Um, you’re Mexican right?” And I’m like, “yeah”. She’s like, “You’re making us proud.” And that’s it and she left. Seriously I choked up, I was trying not to cry in front of all these people because hearing that was honestly why I do what I do. That’s all I want and that’s all I ever wanted playing Lyn. That was the best gift that anybody could have ever given me, saying that. Because also, I’m Mexican, and I’m playing a Mexican-American, which is a whole other world. We have a lot of things that connect us but growing up Mexican and growing up Mexican-American is a totally different experience. So, I also felt that pressure of representing them well and I wanted to do it with as much truth as possible and with all my love you know, because I respect the community so much and I know that I’m not part of it completely. I just hope that the Latinx community in the United States can connect and they can see themselves reflected in Lyn, and hopefully all the other characters. See Melissa Barrera on “Vida”, now playing weekly on Starz for six episodes. *Rasquache - How Californian MexicanAmericans colloquially grade or value an object or person of low or no quality. It's a little mean and classist, but it's commonly used to describe something "ratchet" or “ghetto.”

5 WAYS GDPR WILL CHANGE YOUR WORLD
IP addresses) your website and deny access within the European Union. 2. You could identify EU residents within your user base and adhere to GDPR for those users only. While both of these solutions are technically possible, neither is a good option; it’s costly and impractical to run parallel systems. There is also the risk of improperly identifying a user, which could lead to fines. As such, nearly every major company that does business overseas – even companies not based in the European Union – are planning to comply with GDPR. 3 – If You Collect Data, the Burden Is on You No matter who you are or where you live, if your goods and services are available online, GDPR is going to have an impact on how you collect and use data. Here are a few steps you should take today:

portability, read this.
On May 25, a new law called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is going into effect in the European Union. The law was created to protect EU citizens from potential abuses, like the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal. Though the timing may seem coincidental, this law has been in the works for more than four years. GDPR will replace the Data Protection Directive (95/46/EC) of 1995. Under GDPR, companies can be fined up to 4% of their worldwide annual revenue from the previous financial year. This is a staggeringly large penalty. A violation could cost Facebook, for instance, up to ~$1.6 billion. The number would be much greater for companies such as Google and Amazon. 1 – Consumer Control When GDPR takes effect, you’ll be able to ask companies what information they have about you and then (if you want) ask them to delete that information. This applies to all companies, including tech companies, banks, retail sites, and even your boss. Anyone who suspects a company is misusing his or her data can file a complaint with the national data protection regulator, who will investigate the claim. You’ll also be able to file class-action-style complaints. GDPR also offers something called “data portability,” which requires that businesses allow users to download their data and move it to a competitor. To learn more about data
2 – Nowhere to Hide – Even US-Based Businesses Will Have to Comply According to Article 3 of the GDPR, the regulation will apply to
… the processing of personal data in the context of the activities of an establishment of a controller or a processor in the Union, regardless of whether the processing takes place in the Union or not. …the processing of personal data of data subjects who are in the Union by a controller or pro cessor not established in the Union, where the processing activities are related to: (a) the offering of goods or services, irrespective of whether a payment of the data subject is required, to such data subjects in the Union; or (b) the monitoring of their behaviour as far as their behaviour takes place within the Union. … the processing of personal data by a controller not established in the Union, but in a place where Member State law applies by virtue of public internat ional law. Under this regulation, any business in the European Union will need to adhere to GDPR, as well as any company that has EU clients or customers. While it’s easiest to comply with GDPR (even if your business isn’t based in the European Union), there are ways you could get around it: 1. You could geofence (prohibit access from certain

1. Know what data you have, how you got it, and whom you share it with. To achieve this, you may need to perform a data audit. 2. Review your privacy notices, and update them to ensure that your data collection process is concise and written in plain English. 3. Determine whether or not you’re required to formally designate a Data Protection Officer (DPO, who would be either an internal employee or outside advisor). 4. Ensure you have a system set up to detect, report, and investigate data breaches. These suggestions are just a starting point. For a detailed, helpful guide toward becoming GDPR compliant, review this PDF on ICO.uk. (The ICO is the Information Commissioner’s Office, the United Kingdom’s representative in the European Union’s Article 29 Working Party.) Depending on your field of work, you may be impacted by GDPR more than others may be. For instance, email marketing now requires proof of opt-in. You can no longer pre-check boxes to automatically sign members up for newsletters, or have a box to opt out; instead, you’ll be able to collect and use email addresses only if members opt in. You must also have proof of opt-in (as defined in the regulations). If you have an existing mailing list, there are several options you could take to ensure compliance: 1. Delete the entire list and begin anew. (Easy, but not very practical.) 2. Attempt to separate EU members from non-
19
EU members. (Could be difficult, and includes a risk that if you miss any EU members, you could face a fine.) 3. Ahead of May 25, email your list and have everyone on the list re-opt-in. (Best option.) 4 – As a Normal Person (not a Business Person), You Might Like GDPR As companies update their privacy policies, they’re notifying their users via email. Look through your inbox; you’ve likely gotten several dozen over the past few weeks. GDPR gives you the ability to control how businesses interact with you and handle your data. But there’s a bit of a catch: you need to read the notices and take control of your data. Do you want to be tracked? Do you want to be forgotten? Do you want to download your data? GDPR is giving you the option to control the way advertisers interact with you, but it requires that you do some work. It’s easy to archive, delete, or altogether ignore these emails, but you should take the time to read them. A key component of GDPR says that companies must tell you, in plain English (not “legalese”), that you have options when it comes to your data. 5 – This Is Going to Hurt – Until Someone Finds a Work-Around The data governance pendulum has swung to the far side. GDPR is going to be extremely hard to comply with. Especially for American businesses that do only a small amount of business in the European Union. No one really knows how the European Union will enforce GDPR, who the GDPR police are, or how draconian they are going to be. This will reveal itself in the fullness of time. For now, consumers should take advantage of the right to be forgotten, the right to control their data and their privacy. For businesses, it’s time to get your data governance in order. The good news is that the internet is a big place, and you would need to be in extreme violation to even show up on the GDPR radar. The bad news is that if you do, the fines are insane. As a consultant, I think I know what accountants feel like on April 14th. BTW, May 25th is also Towel Day. So the answer to GDPR may be “42.” Author’s note: This is not a sponsored post.
