WILL SNAPCHAT KILL SPANISH-LANGUAGE TV?

Flush with cash, Snapchat is much more than a social network and messaging app, it is an alternative to TV and gunning for the nearly $70 billion spent

With over 10 billion-plus daily v ideo v iews and partnerships with NBC, ESPN, CNN, NFL, MTV, Food Network, Bleacher Report and Mitú, Snapchat certainly has the scale to compete for traditional advertising dollars – including dollars that f low to Spanish-language TV. U.S. Advertisers Spent

$6.2 Billion on Spanishlanguage TV When it comes to Hispanic advertising, Spanishlanguage T V is king, accounting for nearly 80% of all Hispanic major-media spending in 2015 according to the 2016 Hispanic Fact Pack. When it comes to Spanish-language TV, giants Univision and NBC owned Telemundo have dominated for years – is Snapchat about to change that?

Snapchat’s audience, content and platform are most certainly connecting with Hispanics and as a result,

attractive for Hispanic advertisers.

Audience – According to the Pew Research Center, nearly six-in-ten Hispanics are millennials or younger, and this group is highly English prof icient and smart phone savvy. According to eMarketer, Snapchat reaches 53% of millennials and comScore reports that in May 2016, Snapchat reached 12 million Hispanics. Not only is there a critical mass of millennials on Snapchat, they are also highly engaged, using the platform between 25-30 minutes per day. As marketers continue to shift their focus to millennials, they are increasingly including Hispanics in their plans and those plans are likely to include more Snapchat and less Spanish-language TV. Content – As mentioned earlier, Snapchat has relevant content partnerships with strong media outlets including multicultural focused Mitú, NBC Universal / Telemundo, and Univision. Much like the advertisers they serve, each of these content companies is hungry to reach the millennial audience, many of whom are Hispanic, and

JUNE 16 - 22, 2017 are happy to tailor their content to this audience for Snapchat. In addition, Snapchat’s highly engaging user generated content logically resonates with millennials including Hispanics.

Platform – As covered in depth in this column, Hispanics are mobile super users and over index in mobile consumption. A study by Nielsen found that “average Hispanic mobile user uses 658 minutes per month on their mobile plan, which is significantly more than the average of 510 minutes per month for all consumers.” As a mobilefirst platform, Snapchat is capturing Hispanic eyeballs that may have previously been glued to Spanishlanguage TV. Snapchat is cer tainly well positioned to siphon advertising dollars away from TV, but can they kill it? If Google and Facebook couldn’t, it is unlikely that Snapchat can. One thing’s for sure, though – Snapchat is changing the way Hispanics consume video content and along with it the very idea of television, including Spanish-language TV as we know it.

El fallo de los jueces tiene el potencial de sentar precedente, no sólo porque ratifica los límites del ejecutivo para aplicar a su capricho las leyes de migración, sino porque se basó en los mensajes del presidente en Twitter para valorar la intencionalidad de la orden ejecutiva.

Su decisión tuvo lugar de hecho después que el propio portavoz de la Casa Blanca dijo públicamente que los mensajes del presidente en las redes sociales debían ser tomados en cuenta como “declaraciones of iciales del presidente de los Estados Unidos”. Decía mi abuela que en paz descanse: Fíjate bien lo que pidas, porque se te puede cumplir.

Apenas hace unos días, la líder

de los demócratas en la Cámara de Representantes se quejaba que Trump había logrado en pocos meses no sólo enturbiar la imagen de la institución presidencial, sino también lesionar la saludable separación de poderes que idearon los Padres Fundadores.

San Francisco, conf irma que la separación de poderes está, como dice la expresión popular, “vivita y coleando”, y eso debe ser motivo de reconocimiento para quienes creemos en la importancia de los pesos y contrapesos que dan equilibrio a la nación.

Es una interpretación lógica, si tomamos en cuenta que su joven presidencia es una de las más impopulares de todos los tiempos y que el propio presidente se ha dedicado a poner en entredicho la credibilidad de los jueces, como lo hizo con el juez de origen mexicano Gonzalo Curiel y de otros magistrados a cargo de revisar sus órdenes ejecutivas migratorias.

Los dictámenes de las cortes sobre migración confirman que los presidentes no tienen poderes imperiales, sino que sus decisiones, en especial aquellas que afectan a millones de personas, están acotadas por las leyes y los valores de igualdad y justicia este país.

Ojalá esos principios humanitarios prevalezcan en las próximas etapas de este debate crucial para el futuro de la nación.

DESIGUALDADES RACIALES Y FALTA DE FONDOS EN EDUCACIÓN PREOCUPAN A PADRES DE NIÑOS LATINOS Y AFROAMERICANOS

Las percepciones de los padres sobre las disparidades raciales en la escuela, siguen siendo fuertes a la hora de evaluar el éxito del sistema educativo estadounidense en la formación de niños afroamericanos y latinos.

Así lo revela la segunda encuesta "La Nueva Mayoría en el Sistema Educativo” publicada por el Fondo Educativo de la Conferencia de Liderazgo sobre Derechos Civiles y Humanos (LCEF en inglés).

La encuesta explora cómo los padres de familia ven el impacto del sistema de educación federal en el progreso de sus hijos “sobre quienes tienen altas expectativas de formación y para quienes esperan un fuerte rigor académico”, dijo Wade Henderson, presidente y director ejecutivo del LCEF en una teleconferencia organizada por New America Media a finales de mayo.

Entre los hallazgos más importantes de la encuesta está el hecho de que existe un abrumador sentimiento de desigualdad racial en el financiamiento escolar.

No hay suficiente presupuesto para educar a niños latinos y afroamericanos en las escuelas públicas donde ellos componen la inmensa mayoría. Los

padres y miembros de familia de estudiantes cuyos maestros son, en su mayoría, blancos están más propensos a creer que las escuelas “no hacen un esfuerzo suficiente” para educar a sus hijos.

Destacan la falencia de maestros bien equipados y con formación de alta calidad, que traten justamente a sus estudiantes, y que les faciliten oportunidades para tomar clases que los reten en sus propios conocimientos.

“Los estados no han respondido lo suficiente a las necesidades de estos padres y las políticas federales tampoco reflejan lo que ellos necesitan para la educación de sus hijos”, agregó Wanderson.

La encuesta se conoce en momentos en que a nivel estatal se están preparando los planes educativos para cumplir con el Every Student Success Act (ESSA), la ley antecedida por la política No Child Left Behind desarrollada a través de serios esfuerzos bipartidistas durante el gobierno de Barack Obama.

Aprobada en 2015, la ESSA permite a los estados una mayor flexibilidad para adaptar las estrategias de educación de acuerdo a la población a la que sirven.

“Los estados deben informar cómo gastan el dinero que reciben para el rubro educativo y en quién, de

acuerdo con las regulaciones federales”, dijo por su parte Liz King, directora de políticas educativas de LCEF. “Hay que abrir los los procesos de toma de decisiones a las familias de raza negra y latina”, añadió.

La encuesta se realizó telefónicamente por la firma Anzalone Liszt Grove Research a 1200 padres de niños latinos y afroamericanos en todo el país, quienes están vigorosamente involucrados en la crianza de sus hijos de edades entre 5 y 18 años. El 30% de los participantes latinos fueron entrevistados en español.

Matt Hogan, socio de la firma reconoció que muy pocos de los padres encuestados estaban familiarizados con ESSA. Pero en comparación con la encuesta del año pasado, sí hay un aumento en la creencia de que el racismo en el sistema educativo está teniendo un impacto negativo en la vida de sus hijos.

“El 42% de los padres afroamericanos entrevistados piensa que sus hijos no reciben una educación tan buena como la de los estudiantes blancos por prejuicio racial o racismo”, agregó Hogan.

Entre los latinos esa cifra es menor, 28% y en general, las actitudes con respecto al sistema educativo han mejorado entre los padres y familias hispanas.

Aunque ellos reconocen las desigualdades raciales, el 75% cree que las escuelas públicas estadounidenses hacen un buen trabajo en preparar a los estudiantes para el éxito en el futuro. Una escasa mayoría (52%) cree que la educación que los estudiantes latinos reciben en el país es tan buena como la que reciben los estudiantes blancos. Este porcentaje aumenta si los padres latinos no asistieron a escuelas en Estados Unidos.

Recordando que recientemente se celebró el 63 aniversario de la decisión de la Corte Suprema de

JUNE 16 - 22, 2017 Brown v. la Junta de educación, que terminó con la segregación de las escuelas en Estados Unidos, los expertos esperan que los resultados de la encuesta no solo permitan construir mejores políticas públicas y asignación de recursos, sino coaliciones para lograr metas educativas federales. Más aún en medio de los recortes que ha prometido la nueva administración de Donald Trump y los planes en los que la diversidad en la educación no parece prioritaria.

"Hay que corregir la inequidad institucional”, agregó Wanderson. "No importa si es Betsy DeVos en la posición de Secretaria de Educación, o alguien más.

El estándar de responsabilidad por la participación federal sigue siendo el mismo y esperamos que esta administración cumpla con sus obligaciones", puntualizó.

PEDIDO DE EMISIÓN DE FONDOS En el día 16 de junio, 2017, Rosalynn Hughey, en su capacidad como Directora Interina de Planificación Edificación y Aplicación de Códigos de la Ciudad de San José, autorizará a la Autoridad de Viviendas del Condado de Santa Clara (HACSC) a someter un pedido al U.S. Departamento de Viviendas y Desarrollo Urbano (HUD), para le emisión de fondos de la Sección 8 del HUD bajo Título I Sección 8 del Acta de 1937 de Viviendas de Estados Unidos como fue enmendada por el Acta de Calidad de Viviendas y Responsabilidad de Trabajo de 1998, a tomar un proyecto conocido como Quetzal Gardens. Aun asi, el programa sigue enfrentando la posibilidad de recortes presupuestales masivos en el Congreso.

Las areas rurales de California han sido las que mas han ganado de la expansion de Medicaid, bajo la Ley de Cuidado Asequible -y tambien son las que tienen mas que perder si se hacen los recortes masivos a Medi-Cal, como se conoce aqui.

El reporte del Centro para los Ninos y las Familias de la Universidad Georgetown muestra que la tasa de adultos no asegurados en el medio rural de California fue reducida a la mitad entre 2008 y 2015 -la cuarta mayor mejoria de todos los estados- y entre los ninos rurales, la tasa cayo en un aplastante 60 por ciento.

SHOULD A SAN JOSE LAW LIMIT THE CITY’S COOPERATION WITH ICE?

Estephany Haro El Observador Ever since President Donald Trump took office, fear has become the new norm for immigrant families who fear deportation and being separated from their loved ones by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

Even though deportation is nothing new to families across the U.S. there’s more fear than ever. Therefore, San Jose’s councilman Lan Diep is proposing a new law that would prohibit the city of San Jose from cooperating with ICE officials.

This new proposed ordinance could be a good thing for the city of San Jose.

The new law proposed is called “Shield Our City” and would prohibit the San Jose Police Department from entering a formal agreement with ICE, requiring the agency to seek permission from the city attorney’s office before carrying out any raids in safe zones, such as schools, hospitals, courthouses and places of worship, according to the Mercury News.

I think passing this law would make families feel safer when they go out to work or when they’re picking up their children from school. At the same time, it would also create safer communities since undocumented people would denounce crimes without fearing the local police enforcement.

However, not all politicians are taking this proposed ordinance with positivity.

“I appreciate the intent,” said Mayor Sam Liccardo said to the Mercury News, “I think this is something we need to analyze and understand carefully.”

I understand why Mayor Liccardo would be hesitant about the “Shield Our City”

ordinance, I would also be hesitant if I were in his shoes. Passing such ordinance would mean “declaring war” to Trump’s administration. They have already threatened to remove federal funding to all “Sanctuary Cities” who don’t cooperate with ICE. But does this ordinance would also protect undocumented people who have committed serious crimes such as murder and rape? I wouldn’t want my city to protect criminals in my community. But truth is, anyone with a DUI or traffic ticket could be a criminal under Trump’s administration. He has broken his word after deporting hundreds of thousands of innocents, law abiding immigrants.

However, some immigrant activist groups argue that these deportations are not much different from Obama’s administration, who had deported more immigrants than any other previous president. According to governmental data, Obama’s administration deported around 2.5 million immigrants, making Obama “Deporter in Chief.” But according to the data, most of those people had a criminal record.

But according to Los Angeles Times, Trump is targeting up to 8 million people for deportation, most of those people their only crimes might be a traffic ticket or reentering the country. Even Dreamers are exposed under this administration, At least three dreamers have been detained

by ICE officials.

Therefore, I do think that councilman’s Diep proposed law would be a good thing for our immigrant community in San Jose.

However, it should be careful analyzed to keep everyone safe by not protecting the undocumented people with serious crimes.

SACRA MENTO, Calif. -- Defenders of California's national monuments are part of a larger group of public lands advocates converging on Washington, D.C. this week to fend off policymakers who would shrink the monuments.

In late April, President Donald Trump issued an executive order to review many of the monuments, and favor the "smallest area compatible with the proper management." Tom O'Key, owner and operator of the Joshua Tree chapter of the International Dark Skies Association, is part of the delegation. He said monuments like Mojave Trails and Sand to Snow in the southern California desert are critical for allowing people to escape light pollution.

"If you want to come and see the Milky Way, if you want to see a starry night sky, there's very few places in the southwestern United States that you can still experience what's left of our night sky," O'Key said.

The other California sites under federal review include the Greater Sequoia, Cascade Siskiyou, San Gabriel Mountains and Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monuments.

THE NBA FINALS 2017: OR HOW KEVIN DURANT PROVED HIS CRITICS WRONG

The Golden State Warriors are champions for the second time in three years. Steph, Klay, Dray, Iggy and Steve Kerr add a second ring to their fingers and the team hangs up another banner. For Kevin Durant, this was his first championship and he made sure that the opportunity would not slip away. His excellence on both sides of the ball led the way for a lopsided 4-1 series victory over last year’s champion Cleveland Cavaliers.

At the start of the 2017 season, Kevin Durant made himself a target by joining the Golden State warriors. This was a team that had

already established itself as an elite club, with superstar talent and excellent coaching.

They had already won a championship in 2015, and had the greatest regular season ever in 2016. Adding Durant to this team just seemed unfair. On top of that, the Warriors were the team that had bounced out KD’s old team, the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals in 2016.

The national media and many pundits alike called the decision to join the Warriors a weak move. It was perceived as a “If you can’t beat em’, join em’” type of move. Stacking talent so high that they would have no competition.

People did not want to see Durant cheat his way to a championship by riding the coattails of Steph and company. So how does he look after the 2017 NBA Finals?

Kevin Durant proved his critics wrong, as he is now garnering the type of respect by the media that only champions and NBA Finals MVP’s receive. Some are going as far as to say he is now the best player in the world. He proved himself on the biggest stage by being the best player on both sides of the court in this series. He constantly made the right play and hit clutch bucket after clutch bucket to stymie the Cavalier’s momentum. He was sensational averaging 35.2 points per game on 55.6% shooting, 47.4% from three and 92.7% from the free throw line. It was insane offensive efficiency. Defensively he also made his mark by averaging 1 steal and 1.6 blocks

per game. He was the best player in the series in ISO situations both offensively and defensively. With his size, he shot over any defender in front of him, including Lebron James and could not be stopped. He was hot all series long. His length and versatility on defense gave the Cavs fits. Kevin Durant was the difference in this NBA Finals matchup.

He made sure he deserved the Finals MVP, and forced his critics and naysayers to tip their cap to the greatness they witnessed.

For Durant, this is just the beginning. As fantastic as he has always been, he has more work to do to be mentioned as one of the all

time greats. The best of the best have multiple titles. Luckily for Durant, the Warriors don’t look to slow down any time soon. The team is set up to keep their core players intact for the years to come. Their chemistry, talent fit and style of play are all unrivaled. They were far and away the best team all year and will be the favorites again next year. So the question is, how many titles can this team reel off?

How great will the story of this Warrior’s team be when we look back on their era?

The Warriors have Durant, and Durant has the Warriors. Because of that, their future looks glaringly bright, and it was all because Durant made the right decision.

Tomorrow will be nothing like today. It may look and feel a lot like today – you’ll get up, have breakfast, exercise, go off to work, etc. But tomorrow will be nothing like today. Tomorrow there will be 600,000 new smartphone activations, 540,000 new computers sold, hundreds of thousands of new cloud computing credentials issued, hundreds more petabytes of data traveling through the Internet, thousands more miles driven by autonomous vehicles, millions of new words interpreted by Natural Language Understanding (NLU) systems, billions of new patterns learned by machines, and billions of new lines of code created.

Tomorrow will be nothing like today.

• Traffic will increase because ride-sharing service cars will always be in motion.

With that in mind, it might be fun to think about how some of things that will make tomorrow different might impact how you spend your day. So let’s play a game about the future called, “What Do You Believe?”

• Data is more powerful in the presence of other data.

First we will list a set of assumptions. Then we will craft a set of thought experiments to help visualize the future we assume and put some timing around it. Then we will ask two simple questions: (1) Do you believe in the future you’ve envisioned? (2) How will you spend your day in the future you’ve envisioned?

• Anything that can be hacked will be hacked.

What Do You Believe?

To help you get started, here are a few things I believe. You may (and should) have a different set of theses, but feel free to adopt any of the following: • The big will get bigger, the small will survive, and the middle will perish.

• Consumers of every economic stratum will demand “on demand.”

•A ​ ccess is becoming as valuable as ownership – streaming media instead of buying a download, ride-sharing instead of buying a car, etc. You will pay for it with cash, data, or a combination of both.

• Anything you can talk to will understand and talk back – Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), NLU, and related technologies coupled with Augmented Reality and machine learning will have a radically disruptive impact on the way we live our lives.

• As a result of ride-sharing, the auto industry

• AI will start taking white-collar jobs more quickly than experts predict. If just 20 percent of white-collar jobs evaporate, the economic impact will be profound.

• New technology will not replace all of the jobs that new technology displaces.

• Commoditized products that are hard to pronounce or spell (or speak) or hard to search will quickly become unprofitable.

• The convergence of on demand, machine learning, and autonomy will change the world.

Now imagine a future where you have used technology (of any kind) to create a world you’d want to live in. For example: I envision a world where everyone has access to a device that can do basic medical examinations and increase wellness outcomes by diagnosing the most common, treatable diseases and providing access to the cures at an affordable price.

Does this exist? Will it exist? Can it exist? If so, when? You cannot answer, “In the future.”

Put a number next to it. Two years, five years, 10 years, etc. What will change when this new technology or system exists? Write it down.

Bonus Points For bonus points, think about how these various probable futures will interact with each other. For example: If there are fewer cars sold, what will happen to the work force? Not just the

What investments need to be made? What will your competitors do in such a world? What if … But wait – this stuff won’t happen until the future. I’m just playing a game about what it will be like.

As more and more of the world develops— and smartphones become ubiquitous— electronic waste (AKA “e-waste”) is a bigger problem than ever. Around the world, people generate some 50 million tons of e-waste every year, much of which ends up improperly disposed of in landfills where toxins common in electronics like lead, mercury and cadmium can leach out and contaminate surrounding soils and groundwater. Much of the remaining e-waste gets shipped off to developing countries happy to profit from taking others’ trash despite the environmental consequences, or even worse, just dumped illegally into the ocean.

But thanks to consumer pressure to do the right thing, most major electronics manufacturers have started to pay attention to the problem and take action to reduce the f low of e-waste. Apple, for instance, long targeted by Greenpeace and others for lack of concern about the environmental and health impacts of its sourcing and production processes, has made great strides in the last five years in recovering customers’ old products and reusing the constituent parts in new products.

In 2015 alone, the company collected some 90 million pounds of Applebranded e-waste, recovering upwards of 61 million pounds of material, including steel, plastics, glass, aluminum, copper, cobalt, zinc, lead, nickel, silver, tin and gold, to re-incorporate into new products.

Environmental advocates who love their iPhones can sleep easier knowing that lead, mercury, beryllium, arsenic, PVC, phthalates and brominated f lame retardants (BFRs) are no longer welcome in or will soon be phased out of Apple’s

supply chain.

But most of us upgrade our smartphones every two years, so that means that even today’s greener iPhones still contribute to the e-waste problem. That’s where Europe’s Fairphone comes to the rescue.

As the electronics industry matures and moves toward more sustainable components, that combined with better design can also help reduce the steady stream of e-waste. For instance, researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have come up with a way to extend the life and boost the productivity of lithium ion batteries— the standard power source in today’s electronics—by treating their electrodes with hydrogen. Such a development could be huge for preventing e-waste, given that most of us toss our old phones within two years when the battery inside starts to deteriorate and underperform.

Choosing carefully when it comes to selecting your next smartphone and recycling your old one for free at BestBuy or through its manufacturer are important first steps in becoming part of the solution to the growing problem of e-waste. Becoming an advocate by encouraging others to do the same is another way to greatly expand your positive impact. The nonprofit e-Stewards program is dedicated to teaching people how to deal with used electronics—and individuals can pledge to become one of the program’s Envoys to help spread the word about the importance of reducing e-waste.

became such a consultant for the film that no matter when we did have a question, we could call him and he would say ‘yeah that’s legit’ or ‘no that’s not’ and that always helps. We always want to tell the story that’s entertaining, but we also want to have it rooted and grounded in something. You can easily make it all up but I think people can tell that. They expect it to have a little bit of truth in what you’re doing and we really try to do that, even in every Pixar film.

Ray, you've seen a lot of footage from the film, what’s your opinion on it?

A LOOK INTO THE WORLD OF CARS 3: THE FUTURE AND MCQUEEN Arturo Hilario El Observador We had an opportunity to sit down with creators at Pixar who were involved with their newest film, Cars 3. Jay Ward, the Cars Legacy Guardian at Pixar Studios, and Ray Evernham, currently a consultant for Hendrick Motorsports, were gracious enough to talk about how the past of racing, the future, and a little imagination helped the look and feel of Cars 3. Jay is literally the gatekeeper for the Cars franchise at Pixar and loves cars. Evernham was a key figure in getting the racing element just right. He has lived a life full of racing and everything that comes with being part of that world. He was the person responsible for 3 of Jeff Gordon’s 4 Winston Cup wins, and has a backlog of history with the greatest racers of all time.

So how did these two work together on Cars 3?

So Jay, how did you get the ‘Legacy’ title at Pixar?

[JAY] Yeah, it’s a totally made up title. I worked on the first Cars with John (John Lasseter). Cars became really big after the fact. Normally a film comes out and things kind of taper off into the oblivion but for Cars it kind of started small and quiet and got bigger and and bigger year after year. We found ourselves working on theme park attractions and the toons and all these things going. John realized there wasn’t really anybody at Pixar who could watch over it the whole time from a creative standpoint. Make sure we did things right.

Make sure that Disney checked with us before they just made whatever they wanted to do. So I became the sort of the gatekeeepr for everything Cars related. So John didn’t have to look at everything anymore, so he could go on and direct other things. And that’s how that all started. I wrote my own job description, it’s very rare but that’s how

that all happened.

Ray, is this your first full-on gig as a consultant for Pixar on Cars 3?

[RAY] Absolutely, and again, honored when Jay said, ‘Hey can we call you once in a while?’ We had a blast sitting around telling stories at my shop and then visiting out at Pixar. So yeah, first time really. It’s one of those things that if you look at your career, my racing career, it’s one of those bright spots. Because of the racing career I got to be part of this fun, movie life and see how they do it behind the scenes. It’s been incredible.

How is history, accuracy and Ray's knowledge of course, utilized in this film?

[RAY] That’s what’s really cool. I was kind of part of the research, being there and living through the history of the sport and knowing some of the people, they just got me to tell the stories of my experiences [JAY] I would say one extra thing we asked Ray to do was to tell us about how driver’s trained. And kind of how a crew chief mentally talks a driver through when they’re in a slump. And part of that was we were poking at McQueen having a hard time and how much was mentally pushing through and how much was physically pushing through. Ray said it very well, ‘A crew chief is also a coach to a driver.’ And so Ray was very helpful for us to get into the head of what Smokey [McQueen's crew chief in Cars 3] needed to say to McQueen, what [McQueen] needed to hear. How a driver pushes through when he’s having problems.

He was really helpful for that.

[JAY] If we wouldn’t have met Ray along the way, I think we would’ve met some people, we would’ve done some fun things, but I think what’s interesting about this world is Ray can tell you, you meet one person that leads to another person and it just opens everything up. I think part of it was Ray

[RAY] I’ve actually seen almost a completed version, a rough cut of the film. I can tell you that I’ve been racing my whole life and as I sat there as the film started and was drawn so deeply into it that I didn’t even remember or realize that I was watching talking car characters. The film connected with me, drew me in emotionally because it was so realistic. There were no distractions where I was going. Everything they did was amazing to me, right down to the way that we fix cracks in the pavement in North Carolina and how the cars move. And as I sat there and watched the film it just drew me deeper and deeper. All those little things that I knew subconsciously correct, were no longer a distraction and it just drew me in emotionally to what they were trying to do and look for. Even if you’re not connected to NASCAR or racing as deeply as I am.

You’re still gonna know that that tree, that wood, and that dirt looks realistic, and it has amazed me. Totally, totally amazed me how deep they go into detail to make those things accurate With characters like Jackson Storm (played

by Armie Hammer) how do you feel Cars 3 has looked into the future of the sport?

[RAY] Especially with Jackson Storm, would this be the NASCAR of the future?

Honestly, they hit a lot of the direction we’re going on based on the conversations that we’ve had. One of the fun things that we did, we came a few years ago and sat with a bunch of the writers and the animators, as they were drawing, taking notes. They were drawing as we were talking, and I thought

that was really neat. So hopefully, I inspired some of those things. Jackson Storm was really the development of the tools and the way cars are going in general and what a NASCAR racer would look like. And that kind of came from those guys.

[JAY] We wanted to make sure that at least it was holding water. We’re making something that we think is the future of the sport, but we just ask Ray, ‘Is this a possible future this sport can go in?’ and he’s like, ‘Yeah you guys are barking up the right tree.’

Jackson Storm, he’s a good looking car. He’s pretty cool.

[RAY] We’ll have to build a real one of them Jay. No, I mean a real one. That would be cool.

Did you get any ideas for Jackson Storm from current prototypes or actual vehicles?

[JAY] At the time we were just saying, what was the opposite of McQueen, John’s mandate was, ‘McQueen needs to look old fashioned.’ All of a sudden, McQueen looks outdated. How do you make a car look old fashioned? You bring in, like a 'weapon on wheels'. Every line on Storm Jackson was angular and sharp and jagged and everything on McQueen was round. You’re telling a story just in that character design.

Jay now brings up a story that ties into this question. How they added characteristics of a person into the story and character of Storm after a chance encounter.

[JAY] We were at your shop [Ray’s] the day we met Chase Elliot (current NASCAR driver for Hendrick Motorsports). Bill Elliot (Chase's father) was going to get inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame and he stopped by to say hi to Ray and we meet this kid, this young driver who hadn’t picked up the spot from Jeff Gordon yet, and he was so focused and sharp and he was seventeen at the time. And we went, now that’s a Jackson Storm, that kid is the future of the sport.

That wouldn’t of happened if we didn’t happen to be at Ray’s shop. That kid is in our film now. That’s incredible.

Cars 3 is now in theaters.
