Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR One way to manipulate a citizen’s logic is to provide some of the information, but not all of it. This happened some time ago when the CA High Speed Rail posted information online which omitted a very important point: Namely, that a comprehensive study of all 111 world’s high speed rail systems revealed that only three systems required no subsidies currently in operation. An article published in the San Jose Mercury News, author: Ralph Vartabedian, Tuesday, June 21, 2016, front page entitled “Bullet Train Officials Delete Warning on Need for Tax Dollars” needs to be read and understood by all those who voted for that $9 Billion High Speed Rail Project Bond”. It’s subheading states “A study of international high speed rail systems by four Silicon Valley experts found that California’s (HSR)

system could be among the worst performing (HSR systems) in the world.”

“When a Spanish firm submitted a bid last year to help build the California Bullet Train, it cautioned that taxpayer’s money probably would be needed to keep the system operating. Having reviewed the data on 111 high speed train lines around the world, constructing giant FERROVIAL said that all but three could not make ends meet. More than likely, the CA HSR system will require large government subsidies for years to come. That warning was expunged from the version of FERROVIAL’s proposal posted on the (CA) state’s website. The only record of this was on the data disk provided to the Los Angeles Times and others under a public record request.”

It is doubtful that the current chief administrator of

CA High Speed Rail Authority had anything to do with this vital information deletion. At least I hope so because this ‘tidbit’ undercuts all assertions that the CA HSR system will operate financially as a ‘break-even” system. CA’s taxpayers need to know if the state’s general funds will be needed because this may siphon off funds usually allocated to underwrite health care, education, social services, etc. As customary, it is the middle class and low income folks who end up being burdened or short changed.

What to do? At this juncture, I suggest that the CA HSR Authority start planning to build only its future HSR service from Bakersfield up the San Joaquin Valley to the Shasta Dam area.

The HSR system service could be used to stimulate development of Northern California (i.e., lightly popu-

lated areas north of Sacramento). The commuters and commercial interests could use existing means to get on the CA HSR by going to connection points all up and down the valley. The outcome is a HSR system that does not need to immediately deal with laying tracks over mountains terrains. The outcome may be a ‘north-south HSR right of way which still allows commuters and freight to get to a destination within 8 hours.

The current CA HSR Authority needs to develop what is possible only between Bakersfield and Sacramento because ‘spurs’ to San Francisco and San Jose require laying HSR tracks over mountainous terrains...a very expensive undertaking.

find ways to take freight only from San Francisco to Sacramento (or alternatively, from San Jose to Fresno) where the freight may be transferred to HSR for a quick ride to Bakersfield where trucks take over for the final ride to San Diego or Los Angeles. An alternative is to not build the CA-HSR system because it ends up requiring subsidies which invariably the middle class and low income folks will be burdened with.

At the minimum, this revelation emphasizes why the public must be able to monitor all governmental agencies and programs so as to ensure that full disclosures and transparency. And, to ensure that those who mis-inform the public are held responsible and accountable.

It is this sort of conduct which is, at its core, dishonest. This is what erodes the public trust and goodwill.

Sara Porter ED.GOV Cooking up Change is a dynamic culinary competition that challenges student chefs to create healthy school meals that their peers enjoy. Not only are these meals delicious, they also comply with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) school nutrition standards for calories, fat, sodium, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, including side dishes, which meet USDA Smart Snacks in Schools standards.

Created in 2007 by Healthy Schools Campaign, Cooking up Change presents the future of school food with healthy, fun, locally inspired meals that appeal to kids. By complying with school nutrition standards and using only commonly available school food service ingredients and equipment, students create recipes that include no more than six steps so that their meals can be easily replicated on a large scale and in real school kitchens. Students have limited time to develop their recipes, test their creations and refine their ideas based on peer feedback and professional nutritional analysis.

The Moroccan-themed menu was developed by the team from Orange County, Calif., and took first place. The student chefs hope their meal can serve as an inspiration to improve school food across the country. “We wish that the school meals would actually change because we have a delicious meal, but every school here did, too,” said Mariah.

dents excited about reading, with libraries creating summer reading programs that allow students to read and log the books they read while winning prizes for meeting or exceeding their goals. In the past, students involved in these programs would read a book, track it and move on to the next. Now, new technology is allowing thousands of students to stay better connected to the books they read and more engaged with the community.

Through Cooking up Change, students not only learn about healthy cooking and the complexity of the National School Lunch Program, but also have an opportunity to urge their national leaders to support student health and learning by maintaining a high bar for school food. It’s a message that’s particularly important this year as Congress moves to reauthorize the school nutrition standards that were recently adopted to address the nation’s childhood obesity crisis.

“These students are not only participating in a healthy cooking competition, but they’re also lending their voices to the political debate over school food,” says Rochelle Davis, Healthy Schools Campaign President and CEO. “They’ve shown that it’s possible to work within the constraints of the national nutrition standards, and by taking a page out of their cookbook, we too can make healthy and delicious school meals a reality for all students.”

On the day of the competition, Secretary of Education John B. King, Jr., offered words of encouragement and reiterated the importance of healthy school meals, especially as we head into the summer months. The Summer Food Service Program provides meals for more than 2 million children during the summer.

Partnership Keeps Kids and Teens Engaged, Reading Memories Saved and Encourages Summer Learning Palo Alto/ Santa Clara CALIFORNIA Keeping kids and teens engaged with reading throughout the summer often presents a challenge for parents. With longer days, there are a multitude of summertime activities begging for a child’s attention and it can become difficult to build upon achievement gains their child has made throughout the school year. One of the best ways to help combat this “summer slide,” however, is through reading. Having children read for a little as 15 minutes a day can greatly impact learning and help them make greater strides during the following school year.

In a partnership with Keepy, the easy-to-use app that helps organize children’s artwork, school work and mementos in one safe place, the Santa Clara City Library is helping students reach their summer reading goals.

Keepy, based in Palo Alto, and the Santa Clara City Library were brought together by a parent who uses the app for organizing, saving and sharing his children’s keepsakes. Realizing the app could be used to further engage their child’s reading experience, the parent introduced Keepy founder and CEO Offir Gutelzon to the library, where both parties quickly saw the benefit of using technology to engage readers.

This new partnership allos parents to utilize the app’s video and voice narration to take a photo and record their child’s book reviews and share them with friends, family and on the Santa Clara City Library’s gallery page at <http://keepy.me/ santaclaracitylibrary/>.

In a 2013 study done at Emory University, “Short- and Long-Term Effects of a Novel on the Connectivity in the Brain,” it was found that becoming engrossed in a novel enhances connectivity in the brain and improves brain function. Fiction reading, in particular, was found to improve a reader’s ability to put themselves in someone else’s shoes and flex their imagination.

Children who read not only develop larger vocabularies than their non-reading counterparts, but have better overall communication skills.

“Last year, over 5,000 people signed up for Santa Clara City Library’s Summer Reading Program,” said Gutelzon. “Summer reading programs create an important role in combating ‘summer slide’ by keeping kids and teens engaged in reading. Thousands of kids have already signed up for the program and I can’t wait to see their creativity recording book reviews . We are very excited to expand Keepy as educational technology to help increase reading engagement during the summer by encouraging kids and teens to share the book reviews on an ongoing basis. We look forward to expanding this program with more schools and libraries in the coming future.”

Parents can download the Keepy app for free on iOS and Android and record their child reviewing the book they read using the application’s photo, video and voice features. The end result is shared only with friends and family who have been invited to view the content. Viewers can also make comments in video, voice or text to further encourage the reader to continue their love of reading.

“I love the idea that library patrons will have a place to share what they’re reading with others,” said Erin Ulrich, Program Coordinator for Youth Services at the Santa Clara Library. “Kids always want suggestions for books, and parents do, too. If they go to the gallery, they may see something that piques their interest. I think it’s a great concept.”

Nathaniel Sillin PRACTICAL MONEY MATTERS What would a sudden financial emergency be in your life? It could be a storm causing massive property damage to your home. It could also be something more personal, like an accident that would cut off your ability to make a living.

Whatever it is, if someone else had to step in to help you in an emergency situation, it’s important to have a plan in place so they know what to do.

A financial emergency kit is a crucial component in financial planning. In short, a financial emergency kit involves identifying and planning for potential financial emergencies that could affect you and your loved ones. Building a successful one goes beyond sorting paperwork – it involves looking at a variety of potential situations in your life and then asking, “What’s the worst that could happen?”

You will want to create a kit – a set of physical or digital documents and instructions – that can help you or someone else you trust manage in a crisis. Here are some items you’ll likely want to include: 1. Estate documents. Estate planning is really the highest form of financial emergency planning, because it addresses the ultimate personal financial emergencies – medical incapacitation or death. Would your family have easy access to this material if something happened to you?

In your family financial emergency kit, estate documents would include copies of current wills (for you and your spouse or partner), your advanced directives (which instruct doctors on end-of-life or other stages in medical care), health/financial powers of attorney (which designate specific individuals to step in to manage your money or healthcare if you cannot do so) as well as other documents that provide additional guidance for operating businesses and managing and distributing other assets you have.

2. Insurance policies. Being able to find home and auto policies in a natural disaster is a nobrainer, but it’s important to think a little more broadly. File as much policy and contact detail as you can for any health, disability, business,

life and accident coverage you have – and remember that it’s particularly important to note or file documentation on this coverage at work, too. Sometimes we sign up rather blindly for work-based benefits only to realize how important they may be in a financial emergency.

3. Tax materials. If a family member dies or becomes incapacitated, tax matters still need to be attended to. If you work with a tax professional, make sure their contact information is in the digital or physical kit (see indexes, contacts and guides, below), but it’s also important to keep past returns and relevant supporting data based on your individual tax situation.

4. Investment, savings and retirement documents. If you work with a qualified financial planner or tax expert, you may have access to a particular system that lists and track this information in an organized way that many of us don’t have at home. However you plan and track your investments, it should be included in your kit.

5. Indexes, contact sheets and guides. Some people need a little guidance, others need a lot.

A family financial emergency kit needs to be usable by all designated family members. Put yourself in the role of a friend or family member who’s been called in to help you in a crisis.

6. Easy access to essentials under lock and key.

If you’re away from home when damage occurs or if family members need to access vehicles or other spaces, make sure you have keys and access codes locked safely in your emergency kit.

You will also want to ensure that your emergency contacts have the necessary access to your emergency kit in order to retrieve these materials. You or loved ones might also need access to funds, particularly cash in an emergency. If you don’t have a bank account established strictly for emergencies that allows specific family members to write checks or make cash withdrawals, you should consider it.

Bottom line: Building a financial emergency kit requires some thinking, but it can help you avoid major losses and speed up decision making in a crisis. Work with people you trust to make it accessible and useful to your family and trusted individuals.

June 23, 2016 San Jose CALIFORNIA On Thursday the United States Supreme Court in the Case of Texas v. United States, in a 4-4 decision, affirmed by the 5th Circuit Case. In a nine (9) word opinion by the United States Supreme Court, the Court simply stated: “the judgment is affirmed by an equally divided court.” This means that the decision by the Texas Court to stop DACA and DAPA remains in place. DACA and DAPA are dead for now. Unfortunately, this also means that the approximately 4,000,000 people who may have been helped by DACA and DAPA are now subject to deportation.

In the opinion of the Immigrant Empowerment Foundation and our No Vote-Many Voices Project, we believe that there are only two (2) ways to help the more than 11 Million undocumented workers. First, take the fight straight to Congress and elect a majority congress that supports undocumented worker rights. Second, help elect a president who will appoint Supreme Court justices that will support the rights of undocumented workers.

That is the only path towards change!

Cumplir 50 años fue un buen recordatorio de que tengo que hacerme algunas pruebas de detección del cáncer. No solo las mujeres, sino todas las personas de 50 años o más necesitan hacerse pruebas de detección del cáncer colorrectal (colon) en forma habitual.

Casi todos los cánceres colorrectales empiezan como pólipos, o crecimientos anormales de tejido en el colon o recto. Las pruebas de detección pueden ayudar a encontrar estos pólipos para que se puedan extirpar antes de que se conviertan en cáncer. Así es, las pruebas de detección pueden en efecto prevenir el cáncer antes de que empiece.

También programé mi mamografía. El cáncer de mama es el segundo cáncer más común entre las mujeres, después del cáncer de piel. El riesgo de presentar cáncer de mama aumenta con la edad en las mujeres.

Afortunadamente, la mayoría de los cánceres de piel se pueden prevenir.

Receta creada por la Chef Yvette Marquez-Sharpnack, autora de MuyBuenoCookbook.com INGREDIENTES * 1 cebolla española, cortada en cuartos * 3 tomatillos, pelados, lavados y cortados a la mitad * 2 tomates, cortados en cuartos * 3 dientes de ajo, pelados * 1 lata (28 onzas) de Salsa Roja para Enchiladas Las Palmas® * 4 libras de pierna de cordero o arrachera de res * 2 cucharadas de néctar de agave * 16 a 24 tortillas de maíz * Rabanitos, cortados en juliana * Cilantro fresco, picado * Cebolla blanca, picada * Rodajas de limón verde PREPARACIÓN * Precalienta la parrilla del horno. * Coloca las cebollas, los tomatillos, los tomates y el ajo en una charola para hornear. Coloca la charola abajo de la parrilla del horno y cocina los ingredientes sin voltearlos, hasta que las verduras empiecen a tostarse, entre 7 y 10 minutos. Retira del horno y déja a un lado para que se enfríen a temperatura ambiente. * Coloca las verduras y la Salsa Roja para Enchiladas Las Palmas® en una licuadora (tendrás que hacerlo en dos tiempos) y licúa hasta que la mezcla quede homogénea. Condimenta con sal. * Precalienta el horno a 350°F. * Coloca la carne (con el lado de la grasa para arriba) en una fuente o recipiente para horno. * Unta la carne con néctar de agave y condimenta con una cantidad generosa de sal. Vierte 2 tazas de salsa sobre la carne y frota la carne con la salsa por todos sus lados. Reserva la salsa que sobra para usarla al servir. * Cubre la bandeja o recipiente con dos capas de papel aluminio creando una tapa hermética y cocina en el horno por 3 horas hasta que la carne esté muy tierna. * Retira la bandeja del horno y deja que la carne repose durante aproximadamente 30 minutos. * Cuando esté lo suficientemente tibia como para manipularla, deshébrala usando tus dedos o tenedores y descarta toda la grasa. * Prepara la variedad de ingredientes extras en tazones separados y sirve con la carne deshebrada. CAMARONES: * 1/2 libra de tocino * 1/2 taza de mantequilla con sal, derretida * 1 cucharada de jugo de limón verde * 1 cucharadita de ajo en polvo * 1/2 cucharadita de pimienta negra, molida * 1/2 cucharadita de orégano mexicano, deshidratado * 20 camarones medianos-grandes (alrededor de 1 libra) * 3 jalapeños, cortados en tiritas finas * Palillos de madera, humedecidos

PREPARACIÓN

Salsa Verde:

* Coloca en una licuadora el ajo, los chiles serrano y los jalapeños picados, la cebolla, el cilantro, la Salsa Verde para Enchiladas Las Palmas® y licúa durante 1 minuto aproximadamente. No licúes de más. La salsa debe quedar con trocitos. Pruébala y agrega sal si es necesario.

Camarones:

* En el microondas, cocina el tocino a máxima potencia durante 1 minuto. Separa las rebanadas y córtalas a la mitad en forma transversal y deja que se enfríen. * En un tazón, coloca la mantequilla derretida, el jugo de limón, el ajo en polvo, la pimienta y el orégano. * Pela los camarones, córtalos en mariposa y desvénalos, dejando la cola y la última sección intactas. Coloca 2 tiras de jalapeño en cada camarón y presiona los lados para unirlos. Envuelve cada camarón con media rebanada de tocino y sujétalo con un palillo. Usa un pincel de repostería para untar los camarones con la mezcla de mantequilla.

Para Asar a la Parrilla:

* Ensarta 3 ó 4 camarones por cada brocheta. (si usas brochetas de madera, no olvides humedecerlas unos 30 minutos antes de usarlas). Colócalas en forma transversal sobre las rejillas y cocina de 4 a 6 minutos de cada lado.

Retira los camarones de las brochetas y sírvelos calientes con salsa verde.

Alternativa con la Parrilla del Horno:

* Coloca los camarones envueltos en tocino en forma uniforme sobre una bandeja de repostería cubierta con papel aluminio. Coloca la bandeja debajo de la parrilla del horno. Cocínalos de 10 a 12 minutos, volteándolos después de 5 o 6 minutos.

Beginning July 1, 2016, there will be a one-stop location for birth certificates and death certificates through the Santa Clara County Clerk Recorder’s Office four weeks after the event. SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF.—The County of Santa Clara is inviting business operators and investors to submit qualifications and expressions of interest for development of the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds no later than Aug. 23, 9 a.m. The County will hold a public meeting on Aug. 30 where potential business operators and investors will present their qualifications and concepts for the 150-acre fairgrounds land.

“The Santa Clara County Fairgrounds is a community asset we envision becoming a vibrant local destination for the future,” said President Dave Cortese. “We look forward to seeing proposed concepts for the fairgrounds development.”

The goal is to transform the Fairgrounds land into a vibrant regional community gathering place with recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. It is ex-

pected that most community events currently taking place at the Fairgrounds will continue being hosted onsite in the future, including the annual County Fair.

“The future of the Fairgrounds is a oncein-a-generation decision that will sculpt the area for a lifetime”, said Supervisor Cindy Chavez, in whose district the Fairgrounds is located. “We are seeking partners with the best ideas.”

The Board of Supervisors approved the Request for Qualifications and Expression of Interest at its Board meeting today, following multiple community and Board meetings to keep the public informed each step of the way. The draft RFQs were presented at a public open house in May, and then again at a Board meeting on June 7.

Responses to the RFQ are due no later than 9 a.m. on Aug. 23, 2016, at which time they will be opened at the County Executive’s Office, 70 West Hedding St., 11th Floor, San Jose, CA 95110.

This RFQ represents the first stage in a competitive process that will be followed by a Request for Proposals (RFP) from which one or more business operators/investors will be selected to enter into negotiations for the development and use of some or all of the Fairgrounds. While the County is strongly encouraging interested parties to participate in this RFQ process, the County may also consider a proposal during the RFP process from an entity that did not participate in the RFQ.

Priorities include Affordable Housing and Homelessness, Custody Operations and Custody Health, Rebuilding County Infrastructure

Santa Clara County CALIFORNIA This week the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors approved a balanced Fiscal Year 2017 Budget, as required by County Charter. The $6.1 billion budget includes all services, operations, capital improvements and reserves. The General Fund budget is $3.2 billion, and covers all discretionary and many mandated services for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2016. The County will add a net increase of 798 new FTE positions, including positions added throughout the past year, for a total of 17,715.

“We adopted a balanced budget on time that addresses services and housing-related initiatives to aid some of the most vulnerable in our community,” said Board President Dave Cortese. “It restores needed infrastructure funding and sets aside reserves in key areas for future costs.”

The budget recommended by the County Executive and adopted by the Board of Supervisors focuses on services and initiatives to address homelessness and affordable housing, investing in custody operations and custody health programs in the correctional system, and rebuilding the County’s staffing levels and aging facility infrastructure. The County began addressing these priority areas three years ago as the economy recovered from the housing crisis.

“County funding is relatively dependent on the real estate economy and State and Federal revenues, which makes us vulnerable to economic downturn,” said County Executive Jeffrey V. Smith, M.D., J.D. “We are still recovering from the last recession and the detrimental effects of 10 years of budget cuts.”

The County continues to take the lead in responding to the affordable housing crisis and seeking solutions to homelessness. The FY 2017 budget includes $17.2 million to address affordable housing and homelessness. Approximately

$7.2 million will be used to implement several Housing Task Force recommendations. The additional $10 million will support initiatives for new units of permanent supportive housing for the chronically homeless; housing for homeless veterans, support for homeless children who are part of the County’s School-linked Services program, housing for survivors of intimate partner violence and/or human trafficking; transitional housing such as emergency shelter and outreach services; and improvements at the Hamlin Court North County Temporary Cold Weather Shelter Program.

The FY 2017 budget includes a significant investment in improving the County’s correctional system. The ongoing impact of Public Safety Realignment (AB 109), changing jail populations, and the County receiving a State grant for a new jail facility, all build upon the County’s need to restore and improve critical custody operations and custody health services that suffered from funding reductions during the last recession. The budget includes $7.5 million for staff and program improvements, including adding staff to provide behavioral health services such as mental health clinicians, substance use treatment clinicians, and custody staff to improve the process by which treatment is provided for this population of inmates throughout the Jail system. The County will also establish an ongoing reserve of $2.5 million for jail reform and oversight to follow up on the recommendations from expert consultants and the Blue Ribbon Commission.

The County’s facility infrastructure is another area that suffered during years of cuts and limited funding for capital projects and building maintenance. The County is augmenting staffing and operational funding to adequately support upcoming capital projects totaling $138.6 million, including $31.9 million for SCVMC Emergency Department improvements, and $28 million to begin the jail design and build.

The County is also following the industry standard of funding facility maintenance equal to 2% of facility value (a $14.2 million increase).

“We must be thoughtful and fiscally prudent in our spending now, while also setting aside adequate reserves for economic uncertainty in the future,” said Supervisor Mike Wasserman.

“And the response because of your tweets and your communication just amplified our voices and we try to amplify yours because we have the chance to speak on the Floor. I said on the Floor earlier and I’ll say to all of you something I truly believe when people say, ‘Where can I find hope?’ I say, ‘Hope is where it has always been: sitting right there between faith and love.’ We believe that something better can happen because of the love that we have for each other as human beings and the charity we want to extend. Líder de la banda Camilo Lara habla sobre la creación de su grupo Mexrrissey Arturo Hilario EL OBSERVADOR No es la primera vez que se dice que a los latinoamericanos les fascina la música melodramática y llena de pasión de el cantante Morrissey, y de su banda inicial The Smiths (‘Los Smiths’ en slang).

Empezando en los 1980’s, la agrupación de rock ‘post-punk’ salió de los barrios de Manchester Inglaterra para enseñarle al mundo un poco de su mundo y sus mentes. Desde entonces los mexicanos del Distrito Federal hasta los chicanos de Boyle Heights siguen bailando, y apreciando la música de el otro lado del mar. Es aquí, en el cruces de caminos de ambos culturas en donde la magia de la banda Mexicana Mexrrissey se encuentra.

Mexrrissey es un proyecto de artistas que vienen de diferentes grupos Latinos. Camilo Lara, conocido por su proyecto Instituto Mexicano del Sonido (Mexican Institute of Sound), es el que primero se le ocurrió alistar los talentos de estos artistas variados para imaginar un mundo en donde Morrissey creció en el Distrito Federal.

Hablando con Lara recientemente hizo posible descubrir el corazón de lo que hace este proyecto posible.

Que fue la base para crear este grupo?

Porque la música de Morrisse /The Smiths?

Desde hace mucho tiempo tenia la curiosidad de tratar de hacer algo con la música de Morrissey. Los mexicanos somos tan fans de Los Smiths y de Morrissey. Entonces empecé a trabajar un poco en ver en qué coincidencias había con la música de Morrissey y me di cuenta que había muchísimas que Morrissey tenía. (Por ejemplo) el humor muy ácido como los mexicanos, era melodramático y siento que coincidimos en muchas cosas. In-

clusivo uno de los grandes cantantes mexicanos, que es Juan Gabriel, tiene esta cosa muy de Morrissey, como juega con la sexualidad, tiene el humor negro, es muy dramático y hace de pequeñas cosas de la vida diaria grandes ejemplos universales del ser humano.

Entonces me pareció increíble poder hacer eso y traducir las canciones de Morrissey y reinventarlas como si Morrissey hubiera nacido en México y envés de estar en Manchester hubiera oído cumbia y mariachi y danzón y mambo y cha cha cha y todos los ritmos latino-americanos que suenan en México.

Como fue el proceso creativo de cambiar una canción al español?

Básicamente la hice entre la música de la calle que me gusta de México, no la música que se dice radio, la que escuchas cuando vives en la ciudad de México en los transportes públicos, en los mercados, y quería que este proyecto oliera un poco a México, al México callejero. Entonces en esa forma empecé hacer trabajo con las letras, que tienen un slang mexicano. Están cantadas como la gente habla aquí en México, y el sonido también, no quería que fuera una postal de México, sino hacer un proyecto que tuviera músicos mexicanos que están tocando y que les va bien aquí y con sonidos de la calle de México.

Que es lo que fue mas crucial de los cambios a la música original?

Creo que lo más importante es que las letras de Morrissey son muy largas y son demasiadas palabras en pocas espacio. Imagínate, en inglés son frases largas en español son dobles de larga. Entonces tratar de sintetizar más que hacer una traducción, reinventamos las letras y las adaptamos a nuestra vida diaria no. Hay una canción que se llama “The Last of the International Playboys” que esta cantada por Ceci Bastida. Entonces (es) “International Playgirl”, y habla de un famoso ladrón inglés, Reggie Kray, y nosotros decidimos, ‘’para que hablar de un ladrón inglés teniendo tantos ladrones mexicanos’. Y hablamos de uno de los narcotraficantes más importantes y más famosos que ha tenido México que es Caro

Habla un poco de los otros miembros.

Es un grupo muy emocionante, Jay De La Cueva que tocaba en de Moderatto, Titán y muchos proyectos. El fue de los miembros originales de Molotov. Está Adán Jodorowsky, que su proyecto Adanowsky a viajado por el mundo. Esta Liber Teran, ex-cantante de Los De Abajo, Ceci Bastida de Los Ángeles, que es cantante de Tijuana No, Alejandro Flores que ha sido violinista de Café Tacuba. Al fin Chetes que es un cantante de Monterrey increíble. Y creo que cada uno tiene un sabor único y son gente que sigue bastante activa y me gustaba mucho tener una combinación de gente que era emocionante lo que hacían.

Nunca pensé poder juntar a todos estos musicazos en un escenario. Y bueno cuando suena es muy poderoso porque todos son geniales.

Una de las fotos mas famosas de The Smiths encuentra a la banda en frente de Salford Lads Club en Inglaterra para su álbum “The Queen is Dead”. ¡Ahora Mexrrissey tiene una foto en frente de allí!

Habla sobre la experiencia?

Es un lugar legendario, lleva cientos de años operando y era un club comunitario deportivo para la gente del barrio y allí se volvió famoso este lugar porque allí fue donde tomaron la portada de la foto de “The Queen is Dead” de Los Smiths y a partir de allí se volvió una parada obligada para los turistas que iban buscando la música de Manchester. La gente que iba a buscar a Los Stone Roses y Los Smiths y a los Happy Mondays y todo las leyendas de Manchester. Nos invitaron a hacer una sesión de fotos y es un club comunitario

que sigue operando y que es increíble y que tiene mucha historia. Es un proyecto increíble y además apoya mucho a su comunidad entonces quisimos devolverle el favor y hicimos un video allí promocionando el club para que se pueda unir más gente.

Que es el futuro de Mexrrissey?

No se si vamos a durar muchísimos años o no, pero es muy difícil mantener un grupo con tanta gente que tiene tanto trabajo y por lo menos las fechas que hagamos nos divertimos mucho. Además creo que lo hacemos todos con mucho amor por las canciones de Morrissey, pues mientras dure y la gente la pueda ir a ver, increíble.

Se dice que la música trasciende la lengua y la cultura? Que opinas de eso?

Totalmente. Este es el gran ejemplo de que la música es unificador. Por ejemplo no hablaba inglés cuando empecé a escuchar a Los Smiths y a través de la música fui entendiendo el inglés y fui aprendió con Los Smiths, con The Beatles, con muchos grupos, y si conectaba con ellos a pesar de no saber lo que decían. Cuando entendí lo que decían me gusto mucho mas pero creo que es un lenguaje universal y que hace que al final te des cuenta de que los problemas que pueda tener en Manchester son los mismos que puedo tener en San Juan, en México. El humano es humano en donde sea, entonces los domingos son horribles, y el amor es tremendo, y la soledad es muy fuerte, son cosas universales.

Target is lowered due to current water supply levels and community’s water saving efforts San Jose CALIFORNIA

* If using a sprinkler system, residents and businesses can water outdoors on three designated days, and only before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m. lowing measurable rainfall.

Starting July 1, San José residents and businesses will have new water conservation rules due to a lowered water conservation target. At the June 21 meeting, the San José City Council approved changing San José’s 30 percent water conservation target to 20 percent. The biggest change in the rules will increase the allowable days for outdoor watering with a sprinkler system from two to three days per week.

* Even numbered addresses may water on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays;

* Requiring restaurants to only serve water upon request.

* Properties without an address may water on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

* Requiring hotels to make daily laundered towel and linen service optional.

* If using a hand-held hose with an automatic shut-off nozzle or a drip irrigation system, residents and businesses can water outdoors before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m., any day of the week.

All watering restrictions only apply to potable (drinking) water, not gray water (used water from baths, sinks) or recycled water.

“The new conservation goal recognizes the terrific work our community has done to save water,” said Kerrie Romanow, director of the San José Environmental Services Department. “However, we need to continue the good habit of conserving water as we are still in a drought.”

* If done in an efficient manner, and before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m., public parks, playing fields, day care centers, golf courses, and schools are allowed to water outdoors for maintenance; nurseries can water plants and trees for sale.

San José’s water supply has improved due to community-wide savings of 27 percent in 2015 and rainfall from the El Niño winter. However, local groundwater, which accounts for half of Santa Clara County’s water supply, has not returned to normal levels, and snowpack in the Northern Sierras is currently only 32 percent of average.

2014 turned up no more of them, leading researchers to declare the species extinct.

Global warming is definitely already taking its toll on wildlife around the world. Rising temperatures are changing weather and vegetation patterns from pole to pole, forcing animals of just about every stripe to migrate to new areas in order to survive. But not every species is able to just get up and go, with animals dependent on narrow temperature ranges or specific habitats at most risk.

Biologists believe that unchecked warming will likely cause the polar bear to lose its battle with existence within a century, while coral reefs across the tropics might not even last that long. Fish and other marine wildlife dependent on coral reefs, such as the orangespotted filefish, will likely go the way of the dodo as well. Researchers are also worried about everything from North Atlantic cod to Antarctica’s Adélie penguins to Africa’s Quiver tree to Hawaii’s Haleakalā silversword, among thousands of other animal and plant species at risk. Wildlife native to Australia and New Zealand remain particularly vulnerable, given they have less room to roam as temperatures continue to rise.

“The rapid nature of climate change is likely to exceed the ability of many species to migrate or adjust,” reports the non-profit Nature Conservancy. “Experts predict that one-fourth of Earth’s species will be headed for extinction by 2050 if the warming trend continues at its current rate.”

A recent study from researchers at the University of Connecticut found that one in six species could go extinct if global warming continues unabated. If the world can keep its emissions to limits agreed upon last year at the Paris climate summit, one in 20 species could go extinct.

And the purge has already begun. The death of the last Golden Toad in Central America in 1999 marked the first documented extinction as a result of climate change. And more recently researchers in Australia reported the disappearance of the first mammalian species, the Bramble Cay melomy, as a direct result of global warming. This rat-like mammal, endemic to one small island off of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, was last seen in 2009. In the interim, 97 percent of the melomy’s habitat has been lost to rising sea level. “The risk if we continue on our current trajectory is very high. If you look out your window and count six species and think that one of those will potentially disappear, that’s quite profound,” says Mark Urban, a co-author on the University of Connecticut study. “Those losses would affect our economy, our cultures, our food security, our health. It really compels us to act.”

“This isn’t just doom and gloom. We still have time. Extinctions can take a long time.

There are processes that could be important in mediating these effects, for example evolution, but we really need to very quickly start to understand these risks in a much more sophisticated way,” concludes Urban.

El Servicio Forestal de los Estados Unidos esta recogiendo la opinion del publico sobre el borrador de los nuevos planes forestales, dentro de la tradicion de presentar recomendaciones al Congreso cada 20 o 30 anos sobre cuanta tierra designar para proteccion silvestre.

“Los bosques nacionales estan abiertos a una gran variedad de usos, como la tala comercial de arboles, mineria, perforaciones de gas y petroleo, desarrollos de esqui en nieve, de caminos, uso de vehiculos todo terreno, rutas para jeep y motonieve.”

La proteccion silvestre conservaria las areas libres de desarrollo, y darian a la vida silvestre mas campo para andar. Pero a Dietz le preocupa que el Servicio Forestal se incline hacia una opcion muy conservadora que busca proteccion solo para menos del uno por ciento de los cuatro millones de acres de estos bosques.

Evans dice que su grupo apoya la “Opcion C”, que recomendaria proteger casi 750 mil acres de bosques, sin afectar las carreteras ni los caminos que existen.

El Servicio Forestal celebrara audiencias publicas sobre el borrador Declaracion de Impacto Ambiental (Environmental Impact Statement) y tres planes forestales manana en Northridge, el Jueves cerca del medio dia en el centro de Los Angeles, y seis mas en todo el estado durante las proximas seis semanas. Suzanne Potter CALIFORNIA NEWS SERVICE LOS ANGELES -- The futures of the Sequoia, Sierra and Inyo national forests are at stake, and the public has a once-in-a-generation chance to shape them.

The U.S. Forest Service is taking public comment on its draft of the new forest plans, which come out every 20 to 30 years. Then they’ll make recommendations to Congress on how much land to designate for wilderness protection.

Just because it’s a national forest doesn’t mean it’s protected from development, said Matt Dietz, lead ecologist in the research department of The Wilderness Society.

“National forests are open to a wide variety of uses,” he said, “including commercial timber harvesting, mining, oil and gas drilling, downhill ski development, road building, offroad vehicle use, jeep trails, snowmobiling.”

Wilderness protection would keep the areas safe from development and give wildlife more room to roam. However, Dietz said he is concerned that the Forest Service is leaning

toward a very conservative option that seeks protection for less than one percent of the 4 million acres in these forests.

Steve Evans, a consultant for the California Wilderness Coalition, said he thinks the Forest Service wants to keep its options open while managing these lands.

“The agency has always been somewhat anti-wilderness, and they’re looking to ensure that their plans give them maximum flexibility for management,” he said, “whether it’s building roads or approving permits for energy development, or logging trees or mining, or what have you.”

Evans said his group endorses “Option C,” which would recommend almost 750,000 acres in the forests for protection without affecting existing roads or trails.

The Forest Service will hold public meetings on the draft Environmental Impact Statement and three forest plans on Wednesday in Northridge and Thursday near downtown Los Angeles, and a half-dozen more across the state over the next six weeks. People also can comment online and find the meeting schedule at fs.usda.gov.

Second Annual Sports Humanitarian of the Year Awards Presented by ESPN to Take Place July 12 The second annual Sports Humanitarian of the Year Awards, presented by ESPN, will celebrate and honor leagues, teams, individuals and members of the sporting community that are using the power of sport to make a positive impact on society. The sports industry-wide event will return to The Conga Room at L.A. Live, Tuesday, July 12.

Laila Ali will return as host for the event, which will feature a performance by Grammynominated singer-songwriter Andra Day. Highlights of the evening will be showcased during a 30-minute program on ESPN, July 15, at 7 p.m.

ET. The net proceeds of the event will benefit the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund at The V Foundation. The evening’s sponsors include Lilly Oncology and the Conga Room.

Additionally, ESPN will grant a collective total of nearly $800,000 to the charities of the nominees and winners, double the amount awarded last year. In total, more than $1 million will be distributed to the community as a result of the initiative.

During the event, winners will be announced from nominees of four award categories including Sports Humanitarian of the Year, Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year, and two new awards in 2016, the Corporate Community Impact Award and League Humanitarian Leadership Award. Additionally, three Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award honorees will be recognized.

In honor of his late grandfather, Paul established the Nathaniel Jones Scholarship Fund, which annually provides two full-ride scholarships to his alma mater Wake Forest. This past year, he and the Foundation opened three technology labs in communities across the country, including one at a newly refurbished Boys & Girls Club in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts. The renovation is part of the $1 million commitment the Foundation has made to Boys & Girls Clubs across the country.

Below are the award descriptions, nominees and honorees for the 2016 Sports Humanitarian of the Year Awards.

Nominees (winner to be announced at awards ceremony July 12): •Brent Burns, San Jose Sharks: Influenced by his grandfather’s service during WWII, Brent Burns has worked tirelessly with United Heroes League, formerly known as Defending the Blue Line, an organization dedicated to ensuring military members are healthy and active through sports, since 2009. Dubbed “Burnzie’s Battalion,” Burns has donated more than $1.2 million in suite tickets to United Heroes League, regularly meets with veteran and active duty military members and has donated thousands of pieces of hockey equipment to military families. Burns also partners with Folds of Honor to provide scholarships to family members of injured and deceased military personnel.

• Tina Charles, New York Liberty: Inspired by her late aunt, Tina Charles founded The Hopey’s Heart Foundation and has donated half her WNBA salary the past two seasons to help reduce the chance of student athletes succumbing to Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Knowing that an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can increase someone’s chance of survival by 50%, Charles has placed more than 200 AEDs in schools, athletic teams and recreation centers worldwide. She’s also partnering with organizations like FIBA Europe and AAU Sports to change regulations so that every team has access to an AED. • Carlos Dunlap, Cincinnati Bengals: Fueled by the passion of his parents, education has always been a priority for Carlos Dunlap. That’s why he created the Dunlap Scholars Program,

Savannah College of Art and Design Wins E3 College Game Competition Shelly Palmer Opining about the future of AI at the recent Brilliant Minds event at Symposium Stockholm, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt rejected warnings from Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking about the dangers of AI, saying, “In the case of Stephen Hawking, although a brilliant man, he’s not a computer scientist. Elon is also a brilliant man, though he too is a physicist, not a computer scientist.”

This absurd dismissal of Musk and Hawking was in response to an absurd question about “the possibility of an artificial superintelligence trying to destroy mankind in the near future.”

Schmidt went on to say, “It’s a movie. The state of the earth currently does not support any of these scenarios.”

ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE ASSOCIATION LOS ANGELES - The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced Last Friday that more than 70,000 people participated in the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2016 week's events, including 50,300 video game professionals, analysts, journalists, and enthusiasts attended this week's trade show, and 20,000 fans attended E3 Live. The premier global video game event displayed more than 1,600 products from more than 250 exhibitors.

ESA also revealed that E3 will take place June 13-15, 2017 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

"Gamers were the winners at E3 this year.

The advancements in technology unveiled at E3 will redefine entertainment for the world," said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of ESA, the trade association that represents the U.S. video game industry and owner of E3. "The innovation and creativity on display will propel our industry to new heights and expand opportunities for remarkable growth."

E3 broke records for social media numbers across all channels, with more than seven million posts on Twitter alone. Instagram had more than 500,000 likes on E3-related posts this month. In addition, more than 42 million

gamers watched E3 content on Twitch, the official streaming partner of E3. The Twitch viewership was the highest of any video game convention broadcast on the network.

Also announced during E3, a blue-ribbon panel of industry professionals and experts selected Savannah College of Art and Design as winner of the 2016 E3 College Game Competition with its winning video game, Brobot Beatdown.

E3 is the world’s premier trade show for computer and video games and related products. If You Ask the Wrong Question …

Hal 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey), WOPR (War Games) and Colossus (The Forbin Project – it’s a 70’s B-budget disaster/thriller; look it up) are all pure science fiction. One day, we might reasonably ask if it is possible for sentient computers to evolve, cop an attitude and attempt to destroy mankind. But this is not the kind of AI we should fear. As Mr. Schmidt suggests, the state of the earth currently does not support any of these scenarios.

Man/Machine Partnerships What we should fear are motivated gangs of hackers using AI to better target unsuspecting businesses and financial institutions and, ultimately, sovereign nations. According to Eugene Kaspersky, a cybersecurity expert whose eponymously named company discovered Stuxnet and Flame32, “We are living in the middle cyberage, the dark ages of cyber.”

There are many things going on today that keep me up at night. But, with all deference to Mr. Schmidt, one of the scariest is the evolution of malicious man/machine partnerships.

Hackers have always partnered with machines. They have been using bots and various kinds of viruses for years, and most cybersecurity experts will tell you it’s an arms race. On any given day, the good guys are ahead of the bad guys or vice versa. Today, the open source movement is not just for site builders and app developers. Kaspersky says that cybergangs “trade the technology to other gangs.” Scary?

Yes, but manageable.

New and Scary

That said, something very new is on the horizon: man/machine partnerships pairing hackers with purpose-built AI systems. This is the type of AI training set that will empower an escalation of the cyberwarfare arms race unlike any we have seen before.

Imagine computer viruses that “think.”

Would they still qualify metaphorically as viruses? Imagine a strategist that could think at the speed of Google’s AlphaGo trained to rob banks or attack medical records or whatever other computer-centric infrastructure you can think of. It won’t be a diabolical machine hell-bent on destroying the world; it will be a group of hackers partnering with powerful purpose-built computers and AI training sets attacking in ways we cannot hope to fully preimagine.

Will we use AI to fight AI? How will that work exactly? Will this be a symmetrical war?

How would you know you were under attack? In the recent Google Deep Mind Challenge, AlphaGo, the AI system that beat a 9th Dan Devine Go Master 4 games to 1, played itself millions of times before it played a human. This contest was between an autonomous machine and a human. In the case of AI/Hacker partnerships, humans will use AI systems to attack ordinary computer systems. When we start to fight back using the same technology, it will evolve into some new, strange, iterative AI vs. AI war. It’s hard to imagine how it will end, but it’s easy to see how it could start.

AI systems don’t have feelings. They don’t know right from wrong. They only know what they are trained to do. If we train them to steal, to cheat, to disable, to destroy, that’s what they will do.

So while I am not a computer scientist and therefore, according to Mr. Schmidt, not qualified to comment about how bad guys might put good technology to work in the future, I offer this admonition. One of the very first artificial life forms created by mankind was a computer virus. We used E=mc2 to build the atomic bomb. AI is a powerful group of technologies that can, and will, do extraordinary things – both good and bad. So, let’s not fear AI. Let’s respect the technology and be prepared.
