In this electronic era information is distributed at viral speeds, it is easy to overlook that facts and passion are not enough. A sense of what’s right; what’s wrong; what is possible which includes accepted morals, ethics and values are essential. These days nothing is simple.

Consider the recent vote by United Kingdom’s citizens to get out of the European Union (EU). The outcome was unexpected (their constituents favored leaving EU). The people were passionately concerned about protecting their jobs from immigrants; enhancing British national sovereignty and terrorist cells. The public voted to ‘leave the EU’ … and the very next day regretted their decision.

All this changed with that one polling by citizens who voted to protect their personal interests while neglecting all the beneficial cultural, civic, educational, and commercial activity which improved their lives. The very next day, the world financial institutions trembled with the loss of value caused by projections of doing business with 21 nations rather than one EU. Import-Export business was impacted. Reduced exportation of U.S. goods and services caused the NY Stock Exchange to lose value.

The reason the American voter needs to take note is that our current Presidential Election campaign is, in my opinion, a mirror image happening here within our 50 states wherein one may travel and do commerce in all 50 states under one federal standard of governance having monitoring, regulatory and licensing authority. Would the ‘smaller government’ proposed by Re-

publican conservatives permit that?

Today, the U.S. Constitution, adapted progressively after the U.S. Declaration of Independence (adapted July 4, 1776... only some 240 years ago) contains the the Christian ideals held by the Founding Fathers.

Of great importance are the first ten amendments, known as the “Bill of Rights”...similar to the Decalogue (10 Commandments)...where the basic rules of human interaction, ownership of property, and the setting of limits to government at all levels is stated. It is these ideals which are being undermined and weakened by the endless erosion by those who want to update ‘American ideals’.

DARK MONEY currently has the visible upper hand because with a few bucks here or there, the votes of legislators at all levels of governance are influenced. Conservative forces advocate smaller government, the privatization of social security, health care, and having almost no civic oversight and monitoring of any and all commerce.

An ‘outsider’, Senator Bernie Sanders, is the only presidential candidate, who has consistently presented issues which impact the 95% of Americans who have experienced their living standard drop since 1975 as an outcome of stagnant wages, union-busting, voter suppression via gerrymandering, etc.

ing, charge & countercharges will end when the American people cast their ballots. Before then, I would hope that the candidates discuss their concepts of American Ideals because in the final analysis, facts and opinions are not enough.

What is needed is the expression of a plan wherein more of us have opportunities to earn a better living; earn a living wage; not be stigmatized by race, color, religious beliefs or national origin. It is these ideals which attract immigrants to enjoy freedom and security.

It’s called meritocracy.

Both Republican and Democratic candidates need to address their commitment to protect, foster, and develop the basic American ideals which are already enumerated the the current U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence. If, WE, THE PEOPLE, demand and support with our votes those elected officials who will continue to refine the ideals and values which enable us to live together in peace, do commerce, and enjoy life, then we will have achieved several good things: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The current political discourse must get beyond ‘facts’ and ‘passions’.

But, racism, by its very nature is harmful, based upon ignorance, fear and a need to ‘feel superior’ or be in control. Racism is immoral, unethical, and violates several Christian dogmas.

Gatekeepers are everywhere. When I reported to my appointment as a staff chemist, a department head approached me to ask “Are you a Mexican?”...Yes, was my reply. “Well then, you should know that it is our firm’s policy not to hire Mexicans.”

Fortunately, the person who had hired me came up the corridor where this brief conversation was occurring. So, I introduced my “gate-keeper” questioner to the individual who was my appointment authority while briefly relating what had transpired.

My boss asked me to leave...and then proceeded to reprimand this ‘gatekeeper’. Again, that gatekeeper was discharged shortly thereafter for being incompetent. In his fear, he had tried to limit his job competition to caucasian competitors.

Racism, bias, prejudice and nationalism will always exist.

However, in our American society, where our founding governance documents proclaims that ‘men are all equal’ (under the law) and each of us has the right to pursue ‘live and liberty’, it is essential that our society identify ‘racial gatekeepers’. They do exist in professional organizations (unions, schools, companies).

They can be and must be identified and neutralized. That may only happen if the recipient of ‘racist remarks’ has some degree of personal emotional knee-jerk reaction control, and in his/her mind, accurately records what transpired and reports the incident to the appropriate authority...today that could be the corporate official in charge of achievement of ‘labor force diversity’.

COMMUNITY / CALENDAR

If the gatekeeper is not identified through submittal of credible comments (specify date, time, place, and content accurately), then that ‘gatekeeper’ stays in place where he/ she holds back the development of an accepting and receptive society.

It is not enough to experience and report racism incidents.

One has to look inward into oneself to remove the tendency to use racist terms which do exist and today are very subtle. I never confront a suspected racist…rather I have learned to ask “Is it possible for us to have a fair & honest relationship?” Racists will invariably deny being racists.

Racism need not be confused with ‘not liking’ a person...or not wanting to socialize or associate with an individual. Each of us has our own ‘likes and dislikes’...mine is ignorance; an unwillingness to share essential information already in the public domaine. Racism is abrasive and requires a level of alertness and awareness to locate or identify. In this Silicon Valley community, certain firms and organizations find ways to keep professional persons of color from full achievements in their profession...and that is very wrong or even destructive.

If you are a racist, learn to be tolerant; to keep your racists thoughts to yourself; and to allow others to rise to professional achievement levels based on their knowledge, experience, and merit. It is the least a racist may do. Learn to be considerate, kind, and ‘let us live and let live’...I am not asking anyone to ‘like me’...just do not feel that you (the racist) has a right to control, define, and assign me my role in this meritorious society.

Santa Clara County Office of Education

SCCOE San Jose CALIFORNIA Nineteen high school students from the Santa Clara County Office of Education’s (SCCOE) Migrant Education Program visited our nation’s capital from June 12 to 18 as part of the Close Up “Program for New Americans.” The program consists of a week-long trip to Washington D.C., including a visit to the Lincoln Memorial and a viewing of the nation’s three founding documents: the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

According to Carlos Acosta, the SCCOE’s Migrant Education Program (MEP) Manager, the program is designed to “promote democracy and give students an opportunity

to learn about government.” Acosta said the trip’s highlights “included a visit to Representative Mike Honda’s office, meeting Senator Elizabeth Warren, and running into the Prince of Saudi Arabia in the hallway on the way to the House of Representatives gallery.”

Participants engage in government through Mock Presidential Elections and Congress debates, in addition to learning about immigration, civil rights, and the citizen’s role in shaping policy. Other events include visiting major historic sites, universities, and witnessing the Senate and House of Representatives in action.

The SCCOE’s MEP serves nearly 2,000 students aged 3-21. The goal of this program is to “provide supplemental services to support Migrant students meet the academic standards of local school districts.”

Assemblyman Hadley honors the Torrance Education Foundation with the 2016 66th Assembly District Nonprofit of the Year Award

Foundation honored at a celebration for California Nonprofits Day

SACRAMENTO – Last week Assemblyman David Hadley, R-Torrance, honored the Torrance Education Foundation as the 2016 Nonprofit of the Year for the 66th Assembly District at a celebration of California Nonprofits Day at the State Capitol.

“I’m proud to recognize the Torrance Education Foundation as the 2016 Nonprofit of the Year,” said Hadley. “Their work has helped Torrance students receive a 21st century education. They work tirelessly to provide our students with the extra support they need to go to college and prepare for great careers.

“Not only does the Torrance Education Foundation do a terrific job in its own right,” added Hadley, “but I chose them to show my support for all of our education foundations in the South Bay. The South Bay is the South Bay because of our high-quality public

schools, and our education foundations are essential to making our schools among the best in the state. Thank you to TEF Executive Director Susan Swinburne for coming to the Capitol to be recognized!”

The Torrance Education Foundation has helped support the education of Torrance Unified School District students since 1992.

In that time, the foundation has contributed more than $4 million to support the Torrance Unified School District and its students.

The foundation raises funds for college scholarships and teacher grants, and buys necessary classroom equipment. In addition, the foundation operates the South Bay Enrichment Academy, a summer school program that helps more than 2,000 children in the Torrance area to improve their classroom performance and prepare for college.

California Nonprofits Day was formally proclaimed by the State Legislature through the passage of Assembly Concurrent Resolution 192.

Assemblyman David Hadley represents the 66th Assembly District, which includes the South Bay communities of Torrance, Gardena, Lomita, the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and portions of Los Angeles.

Bill allows Santa Clara to go forward with innovative affordable housing project

BPT As temperatures rise, so do the number of Americans planning to get away. In fact, three-fourths of consumers plan to pack their bags this summer and head out on vacation, according to recent surveys.

Van Cleve explains that several banks, such as USAA Bank, allow you to skip the phone call and alert them of your travel plans through their mobile app or online account.

Myth No. 2: Foreign transaction fees are unavoidable

If you are like most, you plan to fund at least a portion of your summer travel on a credit card. According to Experian, credits cards are used more often than cash or debit cards across all types of vacation purchases.

Most credit cards charge a fee for foreign transactions when traveling abroad, but Van Cleve says that you do not have to settle for this added expense. Banks, like USAA, and some credit card companies have eliminated foreign transaction fees for some of their cardholders.

“When used responsibly, a credit card can be a great way to help keep your wallet secure, reduce fees and make the most out of rewards while traveling,” says Mikel Van Cleve, director of personal financial planning with USAA Bank. “However, there are some common myths about credit cards and travel that may keep some consumers from maximizing their card’s benefits.”

Van Cleve sets the record straight about three common travel-related credit card myths: Myth No. 1: Don’t notify your credit card company When it comes to whether you should tell your credit card company you’re embarking on a trip, some banks say yes, others say no.

Van Cleve recommends always taking the extra precaution to let your bank know where you will be traveling if it’s for more than just a quick trip, especially if you’re traveling somewhere new or overseas.

Adding travel notifications can help minimize the chances of your account being blocked or flagged for unusual activity. It will also allow your bank to better monitor your account and notify you if there is any suspicious activity while you are away.

Van Cleve recommends checking with your card provider to see if your credit cards offer no foreign transaction fees. While it may seem like a small cost to pay, he notes that these fees - which range from 1-3 percent of your purchase - can quickly add-up during a week-long trip away.

Myth No. 3: Last minute travel changes will always cost you Nervous that your trip may get canceled last minute? In addition to zero-liability protection in the event your card is lost or stolen, Van Cleve explains that booking travel with a credit card is a smart way to protect yourself from other unpredictable events.

Some credit cards offer trip insurance and will refund you for the cancellation. For example, USAA’s VISA Signature card offers cardholders trip cancellation and interruption insurance that will reimburse you up to $1,500 for purchases made on the card.

Before booking your trip, Van Cleve recommends familiarizing yourself with your credit card’s full range of perks. You might even be eligible for hotel upgrades, delayed baggage insurance, price protection, priority boarding, rental car discounts and more.

Sacramento – The Assembly Accountability and Administrative Review Committee Thursday June 30th approved with bipartisan support an urgency bill by Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) to modify the terms of a sale between the Department of General Services and the Santa Clara Housing Authority to allow an affordable housing project to move forward in the city of Santa Clara.

“This is a critical site that will provide affordable senior housing, veteran housing, low and moderate rentals, with an urban farm component and additional market rate units,” said Wieckowski, a member of the Senate’s Transportation and Housing Committee. “By revising the terms of the agreement, this development can go forward and the community will have an innovative ‘agrihood’ that matches well with the history of this location as the previous site of an agricultural research extension center.”

In 2005, the Santa Clara Redevelopment Agency agreed to purchase the property, which was the former site of the University of California’s Bay Area Research and Extension Center (BAREC). The Core Companies was selected by the city council last fall to develop the site.

Neighborhood activists spearheaded the push for the agrihood component, an urban farm within the development, to bring together the multi-generational residents who will reside at the site.

“The people of Santa Clara have been working to see affordable housing built on the former BAREC site for over 10 years,” Santa Clara Vice-Mayor Teresa O’Neill said. “We greatly appreciate the leadership of Senator Bob Wieckowski in authoring SB 680, which will allow our residents, city staff, and our development partner, The Core Companies, sufficient time to design a project that includes affordable housing for all ages and veterans, along with an innovative urban agriculture component. We look forward to Senator Wieckowski celebrating with Santa Clara at the groundbreaking of this project.”

Senator Wieckowski represents the 10th Senate District, which includes northeast Santa Clara County and southern Alameda County.

NAPS Greg (not his real name) was worried when he noticed Heather (not her real name) did not show up to teach her Sunday school class at their church. Skipping a commitment was out of character for his normally reliable and responsible friend.

Knowing that Heather had been struggling with depression, Greg texted her to see how she was doing. Heather replied, indicating that she was really struggling—she was having a mental health crisis.

Greg had recently completed a Mental Health First Aid course and knew there were specific actions he could take to help Heather. Mental Health First Aid is a mental health literacy program in which everyday people can learn the signs and symptoms of behavioral health problems and crises, as well as ways to support those who are facing crises, and where to refer them for appropriate professional care. A growing trend, more than half a million people have already been taught to be “first responders” in mental health. These training programs, offered nationwide in schools, community centers, churches and other organizations, are supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Equipped with the lessons he had learned, Greg decided to visit Heather. When he arrived at her apartment, it was clear that Heather wasn’t doing well. She was unusually reserved and quiet, and though she said she wanted to tell her friend how she was feeling, she couldn’t find the right words.

To further assess the situation and how he could help, Greg asked Heather to sit down and encouraged her to talk with him.

Seeing his friend in distress was not easy, but Greg drew on some of the skills he learned in Mental Health First Aid training.

He went through the recommended steps of helping someone experiencing a crisis with Heather. During their talk, Greg actively listened as she tried to express her feelings, made sure she wasn’t at risk of hurting herself, and suggested self-care practices such as breathing techniques and exercising.

After talking for a while, she seemed to feel better. Greg also helped Heather come up with a plan to get professional support from her counseling center on her campus.

Mientras California Anticipa Otra Temporada de Incendios Forestales muy Activa San Fransisco CALIFORNIA Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) inició patrullajes aéreos diarios contra incendios a lo largo de cientos de millas en su área de servicio, con el fin de apoyar a las agencias estatales y locales en la detección temprana y respuesta a incendios durante este verano.

Santa Clara County Joins Data-Driven Justice Initiative to Enhance Local Efforts to Address Pretrial Detention Rates of the Mentally Ill and the Chronically Homeless Santa Clara County CALIFORNIA The County of Santa Clara has joined the White House-led Data-Driven Justice Initiative that will focus on how local governments leverage data to develop solutions to better serve high utilizers of health and criminal justice systems, and to reduce the population of pretrial detainees in local jails, especially the mentally ill and homeless. The initiative complements local efforts already underway to better serve some of Santa Clara County’s most vulnerable populations.

“We are honored to be selected as one of 67 jurisdictions across the nation to lead the President’s Data-Driven Justice Initiative in local communities,” said Board President Dave Cortese. “The initiative will complement the innovative work already happening in Santa Clara County to find solutions to reduce chronic homelessness and high pretrial detention rates for those who cannot afford bond.”

President Obama’s Data-Driven Justice Initiative (DDJ) is a coalition of city, county, and state governments who have committed to using data-driven strategies to divert lowrisk defendants with mental illness out of the criminal-justice system and to changing approaches to pretrial detention.

In Santa Clara County, approximately 74% of the 3,500 average daily jail population are individuals held in pretrial detention. And of that pretrial detention group, 620 are for misdemeanor offenses. The daily cost to house an inmate is $204 per day compared to $15 to $25 a day with pretrial supervision outside of jail.

“The inability to pay money should not be the reason why a low-risk defendant spends time in jail,” said Deputy County Executive Garry Herceg, who attended the Data Driven Justice Initiative Community Workshop in Washington D.C. on June 13. “Data-driven strategies will help us divert low-level defendants with mental illness out of the criminal justice system and effectively transform our approach to housing defendants before going to trial.”

The Data-Driven Justice Initiative will be leveraged to build upon current local efforts to serve the same population in the Santa Clara County criminal justice System. The

County’s Jail Diversion and Behavioral Health Subcommittee of the Re-Entry Network was formed in March to identify ways that Santa Clara County can divert low-level, nonviolent offenders with mental illness and/or substance use away from jails toward more appropriate community-based treatment.

“Low-risk defendants and chronically homeless experience a revolving door of reoffending and returning to jail,” said Supervisor Cindy Chavez, who co-chairs the Jail Diversion and Behavioral Health Subcommittee of the ReEntry Network. “This collaboration with the White House and other partners will help us apply best practices to help high utilizers get the treatment they need and break the cycle of re-incarceration.”

The County is already utilizing data analytics as part of its 2015 Pay-for-Success initiative “Project Welcome Home,” which will provide community-based clinical services and permanent supportive housing to 150200 chronically homeless individuals who are currently frequent users of the County’s emergency rooms, acute mental health facilities and jail.

The County partnered with Palo Alto-based software and services company Palantir, to build an analytics platform that will help Project Welcome Home partners – the County, Abode Services, and UC San Francisco - identify those most costly and needy clients in the County’s health and criminal justice systems.

High utilizers of the County’s safety-net facilities are identified, with their consent, by analyzing data from the local criminal justice system, health and hospital systems (mental health, substance abuse treatment, inpatient and emergency hospitals), Homelessness Management Information System (HMIS) and Abode’s ongoing case management and lease tracking system.

As a White House Initiative partner, the County has committed to applying the following data-driven strategies locally: *combining data from across criminal justice and health systems to identify the individuals with the highest number of contacts with police, ambulance, emergency departments, and other services, and, leverage existing resources to link them to health, behavioral health, and social services in the community; *equipping law enforcement and first responders to enable more rapid deployment of tools, approaches, and other innovations they need to safely and more effectively respond to people in mental health crisis, and divert people with high needs to identified service providers instead of arrest; and *working towards using objective, data-driv-

en, validated risk assessment tools to inform the safe release of low-risk defendants from jails in order to reduce the jail population held pretrial.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - All doctors in California must be registered for access to the state’s prescription database. It’s part of an effort to stop drug-addicted patients from “doctor shopping” to get pain pills. The law went into effect on Friday July 1st.

The Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System, also known as CURES, lets doctors track any prescriptions for controlled substances a patient has filled in California within the past year.

At Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Anna Lembke, chief of addiction medicine, said there were more opioid-related deaths in the U.S. in 2014 than ever before so it’s important for doctors to check for multiple prescriptions.

“We need to know that’s happening, so that we can identify if those patients are at risk to accidentally overdose, or if those patients may be developing an addiction,” she explained.

“And then, we can try to get them the proper help.”

The database will tell the doctor whether a patient has prescriptions for painkillers (such as Vicodin or Oxycontin) alongside benzodiazepenes (such as Valium or Xanax), a combination that can be fatal when mixed.

However, the database is useless if doctors don’t consult it.

Another proposal still in committee, Senate Bill 482, would force doctors to check the database before issuing a prescription for a controlled substance.

Lembke said doctors have slowed the pace of pain-pill prescriptions in recent years, but noted the numbers still are very high.

“In 2014, there were more than 240 million prescriptions written for opioid painkillers,” she said. “So, we’re still using these medications quite often, and we need to really move toward a non-opioid alternative for pain.”

Doctors’ groups have objected to SB 482, saying it would take away from patient care if physicians have to spend the five minutes it takes each time to research a prescription.

Proyecto de ley para transparentar precios de medicamentos restringidos, pasó en Comité Clave Suzanne Potter CALIFORNIA NEWS SERVICE SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- En lo que representa un gran triunfo para los consumidores, un proyecto de ley paso el Comite de Salud de la Asamblea Estatal (State Assembly Health Committee) ya entrada la tarde del martes 28 de junio.

La iniciativa senatorial SB 1010 obliga a las empresas farmaceuticas a justificar sus precios en medicamentos restringidos, y a revelar con anticipacion sus fuertes incrementos de precios.

Este proyecto de ley enfrento una oposicion masiva de la industria farmaceutica, pero Blanca Castro, de la AARP California, dice que muchas personas en edad avanzada simplemente no pueden pagar los aumentos de precio de las medicinas, y opina que esta mayor transparencia podria ayudar.

“Los precios de las medicinas estan totalmente fuera de control. Si se obliga a las empresas farmaceuticas a informar sobre sus precios, creo que veremos algo de control en el costo de esas medicinas.”

El mismo comite aprobo tambien la SB 908, que exige a las companias de seguros medicos alertar a sus clientes si un au-

mento de primas es considerado injustificado por las normas estatales. Ambos proyectos seran sometidos a votacion ante el Comite de Asignaciones, y luego ante el pleno de la Asamblea.

Otro proyecto de ley que beneficiara a los consumidores sera presentado hoy ante el Comite de Salud del Senado. Betsy Imholz, de la Union de Consumidores (Consumers Union), dice que la Ley de la Asamblea AB 72 protegeria a los pacientes contra las enormes cuentas sorpresivas que presentan los medicos que no pertenecen a la red.

“Si se aprueba los consumidores pagaran solo la cantidad proporcional del costo en la red, por cualquier servicio que reciban en un hospital de la red, y cualquier pago que hagan contara para el deducible y el maximo desembolso, de una forma que no se hace hoy. Es un gran ahorro para los consumidores.”

Un proyecto similar fue rechazado en el comite el ano pasado. La version de este ano incluye tarifas mas altas de reembolso para los medicos, un anzuelo para lograr mas apoyo.

In 2011, coal dropped below 40 percent of total U.S. energy generation for the first time since the late 1970s, while in 2015 coal accounted for only 33 percent. And given the influx of cheap natural gas and the ascendance of renewable energy sources—not to mention recent coal mine safety lapses with tragic consequences—coal might not be able to mount a comeback.

“Technological advances have made natural gas, wind and solar—and efficiency—increasingly competitive,” reports John Brinkley in Sierra Magazine. “The once-robust overseas demand for coal is disappearing.”

Brinkley adds that a decade of sustained public advocacy for clean air and clean energy has left coal out in the dark. The Obama administration’s landmark Clean Power Plan that forces big coal fired power plants to clean up their acts dramatically or shut down has been one major factor in coal’s slide, while the Paris climate accord has sped up the process even more by taking a huge bite out of potential U.S. coal exports.

Over just the last five years, fully one-third of U.S. coal plants, some 232 different facilities, have been closed or scheduled for imminent retirement. Plans for another 184 new coal-fired plants have been shuttered—activists claim credit but the development of new technologies that make harvesting natural gas that much cheaper may have more to do with coal’s death knell. For the first time in 200 years, no new coal plants are on the drawing board in the U.S.

According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), which collects data and reports on energy statistics for the federal government, some 13,000 megawatts of coal power went offline in 2015 as a result of coal plant retirements, while wind energy added 8,600 megawatts and solar tacked on another 7,300 megawatts. The Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign reports that coal’s downswing is just beginning, with another 50,000 megawatts of coal power predicted to go offline by 2030.

And the trend isn’t stopping at the border.

“Many countries that used to be reliable customers for U.S. coal just aren’t into it anymore, partly because of last year’s successful UN climate change conference in Paris,” reports Brinkley. Even before the Paris agreement, China, the world’s largest producer and consumer of coal, had been scaling back production and imports drastically in efforts to clean up urban air pollution and reduce its carbon footprint. In 2015, China cut imports of U.S. coal some 86.5 percent from 1.7 million tons to only 229,000.

Of course, coal is still big business in the U.S. and beyond, and it isn’t going away overnight.

ERIN GILBERT believed in ghosts as a child, but as her physics career grew, she realized that her fascination with the paranormal was holding her back and hurting her credibility. She determines to put that old life behind her and forge a new career as a legitimate scientist… until her past comes back to haunt her.

The role is played by Kristen Wiig. “Erin grew up believing in ghosts – she actually saw a ghost when she was a child, and no one believed her except Abby. That really scarred her. She wanted to live a life where she wasn’t the weird one, so she left the paranormal world behind and went into academia, becoming a professor at Columbia University.

Of course, she finds Abby again and meets Holtzmann and Patty. As it turns out, they’re these four misfits that find each other. I love that kind of story.”

JILLIAN HOLTZMANN has always been an oddball. She thinks outside the box, doesn’t follow social norms, and she likes putting things together, inventing things. She doesn’t judge others but she gets a thrill out of pushing the buttons of uptight people, especially Erin.

She has always loved reading, especially nonfiction and New York City history – and discovering new things, including the paranormal – so really, she’s an amateur NYC historian with as much knowledge as any of the other three. After she sees a ghost while on the job, not only does she know who to call, but she joins the team to lend her expertise.

Leslie Jones, another “SNL” star who has broken through in the past two seasons, takes the role. “It still seems like a dream. I keep thinking that I’m going to wake up in my apartment in Santa Clarita, where I was before everything happened, and I’m going to wake up and go, ‘Seriously, that was a great dream.’”

About her character, Jones says, “I’m bringing the audience into this situation as a regular person, and we’re observing it together.

They’re going to be talking about ectoplasm, currents, ghosts, and portals, and somebody has to be the one who’s going to ask, ‘What’s a portal? Where does it go? Why?’ Patty brings the normalcy – she reads a lot of books, she knows everything about New York, she’s a sponge for facts and keeps her mind open. It was important to me and to Paul that Patty is the one who says what the people are going to say in the audience.”

40@40 Celebration Recognizes Individuals Who Have ChangedThe Face of Bay Area Theatre San Jose CA LIFORNIA On Monday June 20th, Randall King, San Jose Stage Company’s Artistic Director and Co-founder, was honored by Theatre Bay Area at their Faces of Theatre Bay Area 40@40 Celebration held at the SHN Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco. King was feted, along with 39 of his peers, for his tremendous contributions and commitment to the Bay Area theatre community for the past 35 years. Over 150 artists, arts leaders, advocates and sponsors enjoyed an evening of musical performances, backstage tours of A.C.T.’s new Strand Theater and the historic SHN Orpheum Theater, and a silent auction benefiting Theatre Bay Area.

San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) have signed unrestricted free agent forward Mikkel Boedker (MIH-kehl BAWD-kuhr, @ Mikkelboedker) to a four-year contract.

“Mikkel’s tremendous speed is his best attribute and he has the ability to back off defenders with his combination of quickness and soft hands,” said Wilson. “His creativity and puck-handling abilities make him a threat in the transition game and he is a positive contributor in all three zones. We think he will thrive with our group and look forward to him joining our team.”

“I’m very familiar with Mikkel having coached him in juniors with Kitchener,” said Sharks Head Coach Peter DeBoer. “He has world class speed but is also a world class person and teammate.”

Boedker, 26, tied a career-high with 51 points (17 goals, 34 assists) last season with both Arizona and Colorado. His 34 assists marked a career high while he posted his second-highest goal total of his career in 2015-16. Despite being traded to Colorado on Feb. 29, Boedker still finished ranked 6th amongst Coyotes skaters in points and shots on goal (144 w/Arizona, 166 total) and his four game-winning goals were good enough

In 463 career NHL games with Arizona and Colorado, Boedker has recorded 225 points (84 goals, 141 assists) and 88 penalty minutes. He has added nine points (4 goals, 5 assists) and two gamewinning goals in 20 career playoff games.

Boedker has represented Denmark in several international tournaments, including the World Championships (2014, 2013, 2011, 2009), the World Jr. Championships (2008), and the World Jr. Championships D1 (2007, 2006). He has been selected to represent Team Europe in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, set to take place this September.

In addition, Boedker played his junior hockey at Kitchener during the 2007-08 season under current Sharks Head Coach Peter DeBoer and Assistant Coach Steve Spott. He helped the Rangers win the OHL Championship and was named to the CHL Top Prospects Game that season.

The six-foot, 210-pound native of Brondby, Denmark, was originally selected by Arizona in the 2008 NHL Draft (1st round, 8th overall).

The partnership started last year has been beneficial for both WCC and Berryessa Flea Market, and through the fun of the cookoff is a feeling of wholesomeness, knowing that the event helps fund such a progressive school for children and their families.

Arturo Hilario EL OBSERVADOR Last October the Berryessa Flea Market hosted its first annual Chili Cookoff to great fanfare. Rich Alvari, Marketing Manager at the Flea Market, acknowledges that the idea paid off, and any challenges that were had for a start-up cookoff were small compared to the success of it.

The ICS is the non-profit which sanctions chili cookoff’s around the world. They set the rules for making all the different types of chilis.

For this year’s event, the competitors will battle it out in making red chili, chili verde, salsa and the people’s choice chili, which guests will have the option of voting for. Top prizes include $500 prizes for 1st place in the red chili and people’s choice “It’s a contest with a lot of prize money and it would be a lot of fun if community members would join in, not just the ICS (International Chili Society) cooks,” says Alvari. His hope is to see community members curious about what judges and people think of their chilis to sign up and find out.

This year’s location will be in the Berryessa Flea Market's Pavilion, a shady area where the only heat people will focus on is in the actual chili.

Just as last year’s cookoff, proceeds of cookoff will benefit Weingarten Children’s Center (WCC) in Redwood City. The school has provided services to deaf or hard of hearing children for 41 years in an effort to help them achieve their goals and become independent

Alvari adds, “and of course the goal is to run out of chili at some point. 10 pounds of meat in the red chili, they are not allowed to put beans. It’s real true, Texas roadhouse chili, it’s meat.”

One interesting fact is that because it is a charitable event, somebody has to donate the meat that’s going to be used in the People’s Choice category. Alvari says that this year Smart & Final stepped up to provide the meat, a critical help to the cook off this year.

“They called me out of the blue saying, ‘we heard about your chili cookoff and wanted to be involved this year’.” That means ten pounds of meat multiplied by however many cooks participate. That is a lot of meat, but this ends up helping everyone in the end, including the cooks, and most of all those that will enjoy the fruits of the labor while tasting the chili.

Pricing this year for the tasting kits is $15 for one and two kits for $25. Part of what’s going to happen is that the money included in the tasting kit fee is going towards a nice addition to last year’s prizes. WCC is putting up a 7-day accommodation trip for two to a resort & spa in Antigua.

“It adds to the fun and the suspense to it too. There’s something else at the end of the day,” says Jessica Greenman, an Alumni Parent and current Development Coordinator at WCC who was the one to work on this event last year.

The trip, as well as a $2000 travel credit, will be up for grabs at the cookoff on July 23rd. A great cause, some great chilis, and the chance to get a massage in paradise await.

“They’re incredible chilis, last years world champion was one of the cooks at this event’s first annual. Alvari adds, “this is going to be really tasty stuff.”
