Politicalviolence has always been present in the life of American democracy.
Two presidents (Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy) were assassinated in office, as was a presidential candidate (Robert F. Kennedy), and one more (Ronald Reagan) was the victim of an attack that nearly cost him his life.
The recent failed attack against Donald Trump during a campaign event in
Butler, Pennsylvania, adds to that reprehensible list of acts of violence.
Beyond political or ideological discrepancies, President Joe Biden is right when he affirms that, in this country, as in all, differences are settled at the polls, with votes, not with bullets.
Any act of violence, whether physical or verbal, must be absolutely condemnable. There should be no room to resort to that extreme form of protest.
But at the same time, politicians themselves must be careful in their speech and actions so as not to incite barbaric actions by unstable or ideologized people. This is particularly important in the United States, where there has been an increase in racist and supremacist organizations in recent years.
Hateful rhetoric and bitter speech should have no place in contemporary political discourse in the United States or in any country. Unfortunately, we continue to hear divisive expressions that do nothing to contribute to peaceful political coexistence.
It is to be applauded that both President Biden and former President Trump have called for national unity. It is a reminder that, despite our differences, there are more things that unite us than separate us in the United States.
With 4 months to go until the November 5 elections, it is worth insisting that no form of violence takes place in our democratic society.
The cornerstone of democracy is the peaceful exchange of ideas, based on mutual respect. When political disagreements escalate into threats or acts of violence, we erode the very fabric of our democracy. This trend is not only dangerous but also deeply un-American.
The roots of political violence are often complex, involving deep-seated grievances, misinformation, and a lack of trust in institutions.
The good news is that we can do our part to prevent the problem from escalating out of control.
Media and social platforms have a vital role to play. Responsible reporting and moderation can help reduce tensions and prevent the spread of inflammatory rhetoric.
Education also plays a critical role in addressing the roots of political violence. Promoting civic education and encouraging critical thinking can help people discern truth from misinformation and appreciate the value of peaceful discourse. By condemning political violence, we affirm our commitment to the principles of democracy, justice and mutual respect. In this way we honor the ideals on which this country was founded and guarantee a democratic and peaceful future for all.

PAYING FOR COLLEGE? 6 WAYS TO MAKE IT AFFORDABLE
¿PAGANDO UNIVERSIDAD? 6 MANERAS DE HACERLO ASEQUIBLE BPT
Is your child looking forward to starting their college journey in the fall? The months leading up to their first year can be incredibly joyful and yet stressful, given the cost of an undergraduate degree. Now that your child has chosen their school, it's time to put your financial plan together.
A recent study by College Ave found that 83% of current undergraduate students felt a college degree was crucial for their future. At the same time, 7 in 10 students agreed that paying for college is stressful. Over half were surprised just how much their college education would cost.
Affording college can be stressful, but there are several ways you can help your children afford their degrees and set them up for success later in life. To get started, check out these six tips you can use to pay for college.
1. Submit the FAFSA
If your family hasn't filled out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), now is the time to do so. Every year your student attends college, your family should submit the FAFSA form. Not only is the information on the form used to provide federal loans and grants, but many schools also use the information to offer students scholarships and other forms of financial aid. Some aid is limited, so it's important to remind your student to fill out the form as early as possible.
2. Continue the search for grants and scholarships
The College Ave survey found that the No. 1 way families pay for college is through merit aid grants and scholarships.
You may be familiar with the Pell Grant, which provides federal funds to students based on financial needs. However, your state or school may have other grants. Make sure to search your state's department of education website and your child's college's website to see if they qualify for existing grants.
Scholarships are another popular way to pay for college tuition. While many scholarships are based on grades, your student may not need a 4.0 to receive a college scholarship. Some scholarships are based on locations, majors, family backgrounds and other criteria. Your employer may even offer scholarships!
To find scholarships, speak with your student's high school guidance counselor. Don't forget to
BPT
3. Federal student loans
Around 40% of survey respondents said they planned to fund a college education using federal loans. Take a look at your student's financial aid package, which will list any federal loans your student can take out in their name. Federal student loans have low fixed rates and offer unique benefits, such as income-driven repayment plans.
4. Private student loans
Federal student loans may not be enough to cover tuition. Consider a private student loan to help bridge the gap between financial aid and any remaining educational expenses. Many undergraduates might not qualify on their own and will likely need a co-signer like a parent to get approved. Look for loans that offer competitive rates and repayment options that work for your family. Use a student loan calculator to estimate your future monthly loan payments.
5. Part-time employment
Whether through an off-campus job or an oncampus work-study, your student can chip away at their college expenses as they attend class. Your child may even consider working during the summer to help afford college. Not only do jobs, whether on- or off-campus, provide funds for tuition, but students can also seek jobs in their future career fields and gain valuable experiences and connections before they graduate.
6. Assess what you can contribute
For some parents, they have the means and desire to help pay for their child's college education. According to College Ave's survey, 41% of current students are paying for tuition with their parents' income or savings. In addition, more than half say their parents help pay for their housing, health insurance and phone bill while in college.
Review your finances and see what you can afford. Have the conversation and be clear about what you can contribute and who is responsible if you're borrowing. Every little bit counts in helping your student achieve their undergraduate goals.
Using these six tips, your family will be well on its way to affording your child's college education and creating a solid foundation for their career. To learn more about the survey results and how to plan and pay for college, visit CollegeAve.com.
NEW LAW ALLOWS YOUTH ON MEDICAL TO CONSENT TO MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT NUEVA LEY PERMITE A LOS JÓVENES CON MEDI-CAL DAR SU CONSENTIMIENTO PARA RECIBIR
Advocates dispute claims the law 'undermines' parental rights
Suzanne Potter
California News Service
Anewlaw just took effect in California, giving children on Medi-Cal age 12 and older the right to consent to mental health care on their own.
Before, only young people on private insurance could consent to outpatient mental health services independently of their parents, and only in cases where abuse is suspected or the child is in danger of self-harm.
Joy Alafia, executive director of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, said there are close to 6 million youths on Medi-Cal.
"For communities of color, we're looking at 61% of African American children, 59% of Latine children, and 38% of Native and Indigenous children who are Medi-Cal recipients," Alafia reported.
Supporters see it as an equity issue, allowing kids to get help for anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts regardless of their income. Opponents, including the Pacific Justice Institute, argued the law gives counselors too much power at the expense of parents, particularly parents with traditional religious beliefs regarding gender expression.
Alafia noted a law allowing kids with private insurance to seek mental health care without their parents' consent is about 10 years old now. She explained the new law expands the right to kids on Medi-Cal and still requires parental notification if the child wants to go to an overnight shelter.
"This is about children being able to seek support and it's not an intention to exclude the parents," Alafia emphasized. "Unless there's a concern about safety or harm to the child. Other than those
scenarios, there is engagement with the parents as well."
Families in need of mental health assistance can call the California Parent and Youth Helpline at 855-427-2736.
Suzanne Potter California News Service

AS SUMMER HEATS UP
, HOW CAN CALIFORNIANS STAY SAFE ?
As summer gets hotter, Californians are at higher risk of wildfires, extreme heat, power outages and water disasters.
Selen Ozturk Ethnic Media Services
Ata recent briefing conducted by state disaster readiness program Listos California, state emergency preparedness officials and frontline responders discussed the current forecast for extreme weather, and shared what Californians need to know to stay safe over the coming months.
The heat forecast
“We’re at the beginning stages of what looks to be a fairly long heat event across much of California,” said David Lawrence, meteorologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “We will see temperatures ramp up through the week, continuing into this coming weekend, and likely through at least the first half of next week, if not a little beyond” — seven to nine days, in all.
Much of interior California will see afternoon daytime highs of 100 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, while overnight temperatures won’t bring much relief, dipping only into the 70s and lower 80s.
“Going forward statewide, there’s no strong signal to suggest that we may see persistently hot temperatures through these three months,” said Lawrence. “Rather, we’re likely to see up-and-down stretches of intense heat, followed by a bit of relief.”
“Both the length of this heatwave and the very warm overnight temperatures are most concerning” for health impacts, he added.
Preventing heat illness
“People really underestimate how dangerous heat waves can be for Californians,” said Dr. Rita Nguyen, assistant health officer for California and director of population health for the California Department of Public Health. “Groups at higher risk of heat-related health impacts include those who are unhoused, working outdoors, working indoors without air conditioning, older adults, pregnant people, infants and children, people with disabilities and lower-income populations.”
“But anyone can be a victim of life-threatening heatstroke, because a lot of it doesn’t necessarily have to do with absolute temperature, if folks are not acclimated,” Nguyen explained. “Here in Contra Costa County, it’s 10 degrees hotter today than it was yesterday. When there’s sudden changes, the temperature doesn’t cool at night, all these things increase the risk of heat illnesses or other underlying conditions like heart attack or stroke.”
“The good news is heat illnesses are preventable,” she continued. “Some of the warning signs include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache, nausea, vomiting, paleness, tiredness, irritability and dizziness. If people are getting confused, passing out or vomiting, seek medical attention right away.”
“Our three tips are: stay hydrated, stay cool, and stay informed,” said Nguyen, “Drink before you’re actually thirsty … to cool off your body as you sweat. Stay away from sugary, alcoholic or caffeinated drinks, which can dehydrate you. Stay cool and adjust your activities to air conditioned places when there’s a health alert … If you can’t find one, find your nearest cooling center, mall or library. Also, use cold showers, lightweight clothing and sunblock.”
“In this time of climate change, we’re getting more alerts and there may be alert fatigue. But when people stop paying attention, that’s when it gets dangerous,” she added.
Heat is the deadliest weather condition, “far more than wildfires and other disasters like floods,” added Amy Palmer, deputy director of crisis communications and public affairs at the state Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES). “We will remain activated through the end of this weekend, monitoring events and responding to needs around the state.”
Californians can sign up for local emergency alerts at listoscalifornia.org/alerts.
As for employees, California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) regulations include heat illness prevention, said Charlene Gloriani, Cal/ OSHA senior safety engineer.
Outdoor employees have a right to be trained on heat
illness; to be watched for acclimatization during high heat for the first two weeks of a new job; to access clean drinking water at no cost; to access safe shade with temperatures beyond 80 degrees; to be monitored for signs of heat illness beyond 95 degrees; and to receive cooldown rest periods every two hours beyond 95 degrees.
On June 20, 2024, Cal/OSHA also approved regulations for heat illness prevention in indoor workplaces, said Gioriani. “The Office of Administrative Law has 30 working days to review the proposal, and the regulation will take effect immediately after the approval … It’s very similar to the outdoor standard. Generally, it applies when indoor temperatures are above 82 degrees … and if it’s above 87 degrees, require employers to implement engineering controls.”
To file a workplace hazard complaint or get safety information from Cal/OSHA staff in English or Spanish, Californians can call 833-579-0927 between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Staying safe in water
Andrew Ramos, captain of the Sacramento Fire Department, said “I operate a 14-person CalOES swift water rescue team here in Sacramento … We conduct about 30 water-related rescues a year, which is a lot, and unfortunately, a majority of those involve deaths in drowning.”
Due largely to melting snowcaps, “our waterways are colder, deeper and faster than normal right now,” he explained. “Although they may appear safe to wander into, use extreme caution. Make sure you’re wearing a Coast Guard-approved life vest and can swim. I was just speaking with another fire captain today, and he said in over 30 years, he’s never had to save a person wearing a life vest.”
Life vest loaner programs are available in counties statewide through the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways.
“If you do fall in the water, don’t panic, breathe slowly and stay calm,” Ramos continued. “Kick off your shoes, try to keep your head above water, look out for debris and make your way to the sides of the stream … if someone near you falls in, please don’t dive in after them. Throw a flotation device towards them, have them grab it and call 911.”
Listos California
“These extreme weather conditions are a complex environment for Californians to adapt to,” said Sonya Harris, senior advisor for Listos California. In response, after the Camp Fire in 2019, Governor Newsom’s office created Listos, an education campaign and resource hub to help Californians prepare for disasters. Harris said that Listos has been increasing outreach around wildfire smoke in the form of multilingual social media videos emphasizing tips including understanding and checking the local Air Quality Index (AQI); closing doors and staying inside when the AQI is high; signing up for local utility plan shut off alerts; and keeping batteries and phones powered in the event of an outage.
Since 2023, Listos California has called over three million Californians through a phone bank program, asking them to sign up for local emergency alerts, with one in four having signed up — “An incredible, incredible return, if we’re thinking about tangible, life-saving benefits,” she said.
“Really, all incidents are local,” Harris added. “What we’ve learned in our work is that Californians are ready to prepare and help their families stay safer.”
Selen Ozturk Ethnic Media Services

GAVIN NEWSOM FOR PRESIDENT? TALLYING
UP HIS ASSETS AND LIABILITIES
As Democrats have panicked over President Joe Biden’s lackluster debate performance and looked elsewhere for a potential replacement, California Gov. Gavin Newsom is the talk of the town. But how would he fare on the national stage?
Alexei Koseff & Yue Stella Yu CalMatters
Inthe nearly two weeks since President Joe Biden’s catastrophic performance in a televised debate, the Democratic freakout over whether he can continue as their presumptive presidential nominee has not abated.
Even as Biden insists that he is committed to finishing out the race, speculation continues among the party faithful and political observers over who might be best positioned to defeat Republican former President Donald Trump instead. Among those frequently cited is California’s own Gov. Gavin Newsom, a dedicated Biden surrogate who recently completed a tour on the president’s behalf through Michigan, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire.
While Newsom says he’s standing firmly behind Biden’s re-election and has long publicly denied any presidential ambitions, this chaotic political moment is elevating the national profile that Newsom has spent years cultivating — including through a Fox News debate last fall against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and a heretofore unsuccessful bid for a constitutional amendment on gun control.
CalMatters spoke with political consultants and experts — veterans of California elections, swing state organizing and national campaigns — about Newsom’s prospects as a presidential contender. They largely agreed that he was extremely unlikely to become the Democratic nominee this year even if Biden ultimately withdraws, with Vice President Kamala Harris waiting in the wings, but that Newsom could be a strong candidate in the 2028 primary because of his progressive bona fides and extensive political network.
The biggest question mark: Can a California Democrat, the liberal caricature that has been a political punching bag for decades, win a presidential election? If the last eight years have taught us anything, it’s that the conventional wisdom may no longer apply.
NEWSOM ASSETS
1. He’s a dynamic campaigner
Newsom’s classic good looks and charisma have always bolstered his political star power. (Never forget the infamous “New Kennedys” profile in Harper’s Bazaar in 2004, shortly after he became mayor of San Francisco.) But several observers said they were particularly impressed by how he has navigated a tough situation as a Biden surrogate over the past two weeks, defending the president on television immediately after the debate and then rallying Democratic crowds on the campaign trail.
“I don’t want to hurt him by saying this, but he’s a natural politician,” said Bob Shrum, director of the USC Dornsife Center for the Political Future and an adviser on numerous presidential campaigns, including Democratic nominees Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004.
Newsom’s defense of the Democratic position — even in direct confrontation with conservative opponents and sometimes out
ahead of his own party — gives him the image of a fighter, which could appeal to liberal voters looking for a new leader.
“The reason Gavin gets talked about is how dynamic he is, how polished he is in terms of talking about politics and policy,” said Roger Salazar, a Democratic communications consultant who served as a spokesperson on Gore’s 2000 campaign and is a Newsom appointee to a California commission for offroad vehicle recreation. “He’s very strong on the stump and he doesn’t back down.”
It also carries potential benefits behind the scenes, ingratiating Newsom to the Democratic establishment that could clear a path for his future plans.
“Being the loyal lieutenant and not appearing too ambitious will serve him to maybe buy some goodwill and become a legitimate heir apparent,” said Jason Cabel Roe, a longtime GOP strategist in Michigan and former deputy campaign manager for Mitt Romney’s presidential bid in 2007.
2. He has a growing national fundraising base
Newsom is a prolific fundraiser with experience building a war chest to boost himself and other Democrats nationally. It is one of his greatest strengths, rivaling any senator or governor who may be considering their own campaign for president, said Rose Kapolczynski, a longtime Democratic strategist working with Close the Gap California to elect more women legislators.
“He’s raised tens of millions of dollars for his own campaigns and ballot measures. He’s been an effective fundraising surrogate for Biden and others. And that’s given him the opportunity to build a national fundraising network,” Kapolczynski said. “He has a strong small donor network and he’s certainly well-known to major donors across the country.”
Newsom’s three federal committees, branded as the Campaign for Democracy, have raised $24 million for direct contributions to candidates, ad spending and more since launching in March last year, according to data from the Federal Elections Committee.
executions in California not long after he entered the governor’s office in 2019.
Rather than the pocketbook appeal to the working class that propelled Bill Clinton, Democratic voters in the Trump era are searching for a leader with the proper worldview, said Mike Madrid, a Republican political consultant who worked on the antiTrump Lincoln Project during the 2020 presidential campaign. Madrid believes Newsom is the frontrunner for the 2028 nomination because he has shown Democrats how to win with the cultural issues, such as abortion rights, that are most important to the party’s core supporters.
“He understands the Democratic base better than almost any Democrat of his generation, and that they are driven almost exclusively by cultural issues,” said Madrid, who worked on the campaign for one of Newsom’s gubernatorial rivals in 2018. “I think he’s a generational talent.”
Slightly more than half of that was transferred from his 2022 gubernatorial campaign.
“The more that Republicans say California is a liberal hellhole, that helps him. He wants that.”
-MIKE MADRID, REPUBLICAN POLITICAL CONSULTANT
Most of the cash comes from donors in California, the wealthiest state in the nation and the beating heart of its lucrative tech and entertainment industries, a CalMatters analysis found. But Newsom — who regularly travels the country to elevate Democrats in red states — has also expanded his reach from coast to coast.
For example, the Campaign for Democracy PAC, Newsom’s political action committee contributing to Democratic parties and candidates, raised more than $10 million by March, about $6 million of which came from his gubernatorial account. An analysis of itemized contributions from donors who gave $200 or more suggests that more than 40% of the remaining funds came from outside California, across 46 other states.
Establishing the network now also shrewdly lays the groundwork for a potential future presidential campaign, giving Newsom a financial reserve to run ads and curry favor with other Democrats, said Bud Jackson, a longtime Democratic strategist in Washington, D.C., who spearheaded TV advertising efforts to recruit Wesley Clark and Barack Obama for president.
“It sounds like they’ve got their shit together,” Jackson said.
3. He’s appealing to Democratic base voters
If Biden sticks around, the next Democratic presidential nominee will be chosen through the 2028 primaries. Those are decided by a more liberal subset of the electorate that may be drawn to a candidate like Newsom with a history of bold progressive governance — from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples as mayor of San Francisco in 2004 to declaring a moratorium on
And while candidates generally try to broaden their message during the general election, Madrid said the calculus for how to win has changed. In an increasingly divided electorate, where miniscule margins will decide the presidential race, energizing the base is just as important as winning over the ever-narrower slice of swing voters.
The constant attacks against Newsom and his “California values” by Trump, DeSantis and other Republicans actually benefit Newsom with the people who hate what those conservative politicians stand for, Madrid said.
“The average Democratic voter across the country is not that different from the average California Democratic voter,” he said. “The more that Republicans say California is a liberal hellhole, that helps him. He wants that.”
NEWSOM LIABILITIES
1. He’s not particularly popular
The challenge for Newsom is to reach beyond that Democratic base. While only a snapshot in time, recent trends in California are not encouraging.
After surging during the pandemic and then holding a steady majority, Newsom’s approval rating among California voters has cratered over the past year. The Public Policy Institute of California found in a June survey that just 47% of likely voters in the state approved of the job the governor is doing, down from 59% a year prior.
Pollsters did not track why Newsom is underwater. He’s spent most of the year dealing with a historic budget deficit and the threat of massive cuts to important public programs.
But survey director Mark Baldassare noted that the governor’s approval has shrunk notably with independents, less a third of whom approve of him. Among independent likely voters, his approval is down to 35% from 50% a year ago. During that time, Newsom has leaned into his role as a prominent national surrogate for Democrats and come under increasing criticism from Republicans.

In a breakout of survey respondents from the most competitive California congressional districts, only 42% of likely voters approved of the job Newsom is doing. That’s lower than California voters overall — a potentially bad sign for his appeal in swing states.
“Gavin Newsom has become a more politically polarized candidate in a more politically polarized time,” Baldassare said. “That’s one thing that a governor experiences when they put themselves in the national spotlight.”
2. He’s got a tough record to defend
Nearly all the experts CalMatters spoke to agreed that California’s rising crime rates, homelessness crisis and massive budget shortfall provide potent ammunition for conservatives — and even fellow Democrats — to target Newsom during a presidential campaign.
“There’s just so many things that are going wrong in the state, and he owns all of them. He is identified with all of them,” said Roe, the GOP strategist from Michigan.
Voters in California are increasingly frustrated with the state’s rising violent and property crime rates in recent years, although they remain lower than in the 1980s and 1990s, according to the Public Policy Institute of California.
The sentiment fueled support for a ballot measure this November to partially undo Proposition 47 — a decade-old state law approved by voters — by toughening penalties for retail thefts and drug offenses. Newsom and Democratic legislative leaders balked at the measure but eventually backed down amid broken negotiations and failed attempts to put a rival proposal on the ballot.
Similarly, Newsom would have to reckon with overseeing a whiplash-inducing decline from record budget surplus to multibillion dollar deficit, and with the state’s homelessness crisis, which has in many ways defined his governorship. The number of homeless Californians has been on the rise in recent years, accounting for almost half of the nation’s unhoused population.
“His entire career, he just kind of walks into each office. So he’s got a glass jaw.”
JASON CABEL
ROE, DEPUTY CAMPAIGN MANAGER FOR MITT ROMNEY’S 2007 PRESIDENTIAL BID
To change the narrative, Jackson said Newsom must “sidestep” these weaknesses while pointing to other accomplishments.
“He can say, ‘The economy has been in a rough spot, inflation is very high, these are things that I can’t completely control,’” Jackson said.
In part to dampen public concerns about homelessness, Newsom championed Proposition 1 — a mental health bond measure he said would help tackle homelessness — which passed by razor-thin margins in the March primary. And in a friend-of-the-court brief, he also asked the Supreme Court to grant cities more authority to clear encampments. The court’s conservative majority last month obliged, to the outrage of the court’s liberal justices.
When it comes to crime and homelessness, Salazar said, Newsom could point to “major cities in red states” with “the exact same issues.”
3. His appeal to swing state voters is unknown
California Democrats brag about being on the political cutting edge, but their proudly progressive values also make them an object of ridicule. When Rep. Nancy Pelosi was Speaker of the House, Republicans used her San Francisco hometown as a cudgel in ads against members of her caucus. Former Gov. Jerry Brown earned the nickname “Governor Moonbeam” on the way to one of three unsuccessful presidential bids.
California’s luster appears to be dimming even further as Newsom’s star rises. A Los Angeles Times poll in February found that half of American adults believe California is in decline, and nearly half of Republicans said California was not American.
“For better or worse, that’s not something that’s going to play all too well in other parts of the country,” said Dan Schnur, who served as the national communications director for John McCain’s 2000 presidential campaign and now teaches politics courses at UC Berkeley, Pepperdine University and the University of Southern California.
“If he were the smart, personable, aggressive and mediagenic governor of Wisconsin, he’d be unstoppable.”
Jonathan Kinloch, a Michigan Democratic Party official in Detroit and a Biden delegate, said many voters outside of California perceive the state as the “socialist center” of America and Newsom would have to answer their concerns about its tax and environmental policies.
“When you talk about left, California is far left and…is willing to tax itself out of existence,” Kinloch said.
Newsom would also need to figure out a stronger message with non-white workingclass voters who could carry him over the top in swing states, said Madrid, the GOP consultant. These voters care more about economic issues and have consequently been drifting away from the Democratic Party in recent elections.
“The pathway to the middle class in California is among the least attainable,” Madrid argued. “The record in California is not great. Is it fixable? It is. But he’s going to need time to get there.”
Schnur said running in a presidential primary — when Newsom can lean on liberal issues that play to his strengths, such as abortion rights and climate change — would give voters more time to get to know him and become comfortable with him.
“In a general election, the landscape is going to be much less hospitable,” Schnur said. “But in a primary, it’s easier for him to change the subject.”
But being from a blue state, Newsom lacks experience in competitive races. That could put him at a disadvantage compared to other politicians — such as Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear — who have also been floated as future presidential contenders.
“His entire career, he just kind of walks into each office,” Roe, the Michigan Republican consultant, said. “So he’s got a glass jaw.”
¿PODRÍA
GAVIN NEWSOM SER UN BUEN CANDIDATO
A PRESIDENTE?
Alexei Koseff & Yue Stella Yu CalMatters

SOCIOLOGIST NOT OPTIMISTIC AFTER TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT
Alex Gonzalez Public News Service
Plenty of political and social leaders are calling for unity and condemning political violence after this weekend's assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. However, a University of Nevada, Las Vegas sociologist said he is not too optimistic about the country's capacity to use this political moment to catalyze change.
Robert Futrell, professor of sociology at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, who studies social movements and social change, said while Saturday's event has every hallmark of a political and social turning point, he thinks it is unlikely to happen given the country's recent history.
"If we can't come together and imagine that a better world is possible without political violence and without guns kind of fueling that, helping to fuel that, I'm not sure that this one is going to turn the tide either, unfortunately," Futrell explained.
Futrell emphasized the question becomes, 'Can and will the U.S. find the political willpower to act and stem the tide on the various forms of violence plaguing the nation?' Recent research showed almost 7% of Americans believe the use of force would be "appropriate" to restore former President Trump to office. And 10% of Americans said political violence would be justified to prevent Trump from becoming president again.
Futrell noted conspiracy theorists have already started to alter the symbolic images from Saturday's fiasco. He has seen altered images of Secret Service agents smiling as the tragedy took place. According to Futrell, conspiracy theorists take a slight shred of evidence, altered or not, to create what he calls a "mythology" that fits preestablished ideas about how politics and power work, which he said added dangerous fuel to the fire.
"After the horror of 'there has been a shooting of a former president' goes past -- and we're probably already past that in some ways -- that the tales will get spun in the ways that seem politically beneficial to whoever's spinning them, be that the far right, the left," Futrell pointed out. "Conspiracists are really good at that."
Futrell added not everyone thinks about the power words hold and while he appreciates
the immediate sentiment of unity, he encouraged everyone to reflect moving forward.
"We need to debate but debate on grounds that don't lead to deep tensions and hatred," Futrell advised. "I agree with all of that. I would ask folks to think about whether they individually, and we collectively, are doing that a week from now, a month from now, a year from now."

SOCIÓLOGO
DE LA UNLV PESIMISTA TRAS INTENTO DE ASESINATO A TRUMP
Alex Gonzalez Public News Service
Numerosos

EARTHTALK Q&A: BANKS & CLIMATE
Dear EarthTalk: How is it that banks play a disproportionately large role in the increase in greenhouse gas emissions, and what can we do to reform this? -- Philip, C., New York, NY
Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EarthTalk
Banksplay a critical role in the global economy. By financing industrial activities and investing in infrastructure projects, banks are at the forefront of driving economic growth. However, through their investments in fossil fuel industries, banks such as Chase, Wells Fargo and Bank of America are also responsible for financing the emission of greenhouse gasses.
The carbon emissions produced by banks can be traced to high carbon portfolios consisting of fossil fuel industries. According to Whistleblowers.org, the world’s 60 largest commercial banks have provided more than 3.8 trillion dollars for fossil fuels through lending and underwritings. By supporting and investing in companies that extract and produce oil, gas and coal, banks are helping such companies expand, regardless of the global shift towards a greener economy.
What can banks do to rewrite this narrative? For one, shifting their portfolios away from carbon intensive industries and toward sustainable projects is needed. In doing so, banks can invest in industries that reduce carbon emissions. Addition-
ally, green bonds, fixed income financial instruments used to fund climate positive projects, and climate funds, financial mechanisms that support low carbon projects and initiatives, can be utilized by providing capital directed specifically for eco-friendly projects.
Furthermore, banks can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by adopting ESG (environmental, social and governance) criteria, a screening technique that judges companies based on their relationship with their social and ecological environment. By applying these criteria to potential investments, they can shift toward working with companies that reflect environmentally friendly values. Adopting ESG criteria can help banks reduce their carbon footprints and addresses other wider social issues.
One easy step for banks to take is to enhance their transparency and accountability. By disclosing the carbon footprint of their investment portfolios as well as their targets for reducing emissions, banks can demonstrate their dedication to a carbon neutral future. Frameworks like the Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures can be used to provide guidelines for reporting and stakeholder assessments, and also to compare the emissions of different banks.
Greater transparency enables the tracking of banks’ progress towards reduced greenhouse emissions. Readers can study their banks’ carbon footprints to identify “greenwashing,” a technique used to deceptively portray a company as green friendly. Search their websites for impact reports to understand their ethics and investments. Look for external ecological certifications and use resources like Bank Green, which conduct environmental analyses of banks. By supporting greener banks, you can contribute to transparency and accountability. Through such actions you can influence the financial sector’s shift towards a low carbon future.

EARTHTALK Q&A: BANCOS Y CLIMA
- Philip, C., Nueva York, NY
Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EarthTalk

901 E. Santa Clara Street, San José, CA

• Reducir el riesgo de inundaciones para hogares, escuelas, comercios e infraestructura de transporte a lo largo del Arroyo Coyote entre Montague Expressway y Tully Road debido a una inundación equivalente a la sucedida el 21 de febrero de 2017 (un evento de inundación que tiene lugar aproximadamente cada 20 años);
• Completar el proyecto antes de que entre en funcionamiento el desvío la etapa 2 del Proyecto de Modernización Sísmica de la Presa Anderson (estimado para 2028);
• Diseñar el proyecto para prevenir aumentos en la erosión y degradación del Arroyo Coyote;
llamado SALAS, Student Association for Local Asian American Support, a organizar la primera celebración cultural asiática-americana”.
HOW THE 49ERS
ARE
WORKING
WITH COMMUNITIES IN MEXICO TO CULTIVATE STEM AND FOOTBALL TIES ACROSS BORDERS
Sofy Navarro, Senior Manager of 49ers EDU program talks about how events like “Day with the 49ers”, a community event in Cabo San Lucas, help connect Mexican fans and youth with the 49ers and STEM education
Arturo Hilario El Observador
Earlier this year, the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Cabos Tourism Board hosted “Day with the 49ers,” a youth community event in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
Taking place at the Bicentenario Stadium in Cabo, “Day with the 49ers” hosted more than 100 local youth for a day that included fun and education.
Participants at the event learned about concepts of STEM education alongside American Football from pro players, focusing on the game of American football by competing in drills, and about science, technology, engineering, art, and math concepts by completing an education lesson led by 49ers EDU.
The professional players who participated in the activities included Patrick Willis, 49ers legend and NFL Hall-ofFamer, and Diana Flores, World Flag Football Champion and Los Cabos Brand Ambassador.
Events like the “Day with the 49ers” are part of a multi-year global marketing rights partnership between the 49ers and the Los Cabos Tourism Board, which last year announced the partnership and named the region the “Preferred Travel Destination” of the NFL franchise.
Both organizations aim to grow the game of American football while prioritizing community development. The May event was a first-of-its-kind event in Los Cabos.
Sofy Navarro, Senior Manager of 49ers EDU program, recently spoke about her experience working on initiatives like the “Day with the 49ers” and how her being Mexican-American emphasized the experience of seeing the connection between the 49ers organization and the communities in Mexico.
As Senior Manager of 49ers EDU, she manages STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) initiatives with the 49ers Foundation. As part of this, she manages community
relationships, corporate giving partnerships, and oversees creation and implementation of program curriculum. Throughout her tenure, she has helped bring free STEAM programming to over 500,000 Bay Area youth.
What was her experience like out in Mexico with the kids for “Day with the 49ers”?
“It was an unforgettable experience to be able to share the game of American Football and how it relates to STEAM and career pathways. The Los Cabos community was welcoming and energized by the opportunity to participate. The young athletes were inspired by 49ers Legend Patrick Willis and World Champion Flag Football player Diana Flores and could not contain their excitement.”
How does she see the importance of connecting with our neighbor country with her being MexicanAmerican herself
It was a dream to be able to work with the Los Cabos community in my home country of Mexico. This event is a beautiful blend of my nationality and cultural roots that many of our fans can relate to. As a Mexican-American woman, being able to represent the 49ers in Mexico is an empowering message to all. It sets an example for young women and student athletes in Mexico and in the Bay Area that we are a part of the ever-growing landscape of American Football. Our goal, to create deeper connections with the Latino community in the Bay Area and abroad, is led by Latinos, for Latinos. This is why it is important to partner with organizations like the Los Cabos Tourism Board that share the same values of community and family.
This event reinforced how the power of sport can make a deep impact in the lives of others, not only through fandom, but through sportsmanship and tangible life skills. The 49ers and the Los Cabos Tourism Board recognize that opportunity and look forward to finding more ways to do this.
