Afterweeks of anguish, reality prevailed and Joe Biden passed the baton to Kamala Harris. It was a triumph of his sense of historical responsibility: had he stayed in the race and lost to Donald Trump, the judgment of history would have been devastating.

Now Biden says goodbye as a worthy patriarch. A consistent politician who dedicated more than five decades of

his life to serving the public interest with decency and honorability.

Kamala inherits a mission and a challenge: to prevent Donald Trump's return to power, and to reunite a Democratic family that had lost faith and hope.

In just 24 hours, Harris' campaign raised $81 million from 888,000 donors and nearly 60,000 volunteers signed up to volunteer for his campaign. This is the main thermometer to verify that the generational change was a breath of fresh air that resurrected the soul of the Democrats.

As the daughter of a Jamaican father and a Tamil mother from India, Kamala experiences firsthand the reality of migrant communities.

At 59 years old, her life is a testament to the spirit that animates all expatriates: sacrifice and effort to provide well-being and a better future for our people.

As an attorney, California attorney general, senator and vice president, she has been a tireless advocate for civil rights.

She supports the Dream Act and opens the door for the legalization of more than 11 million undocumented immigrants.

One of her first acts as a candidate was to confirm Julie ChávezRodríguez, granddaughter of the venerable César Chávez, as manager of her presidential campaign.

She has been a fierce protector of women's reproductive rights and has pushed for sensible reforms to regulate firearms.

In her first message from Democratic campaign headquarters in Delaware, Kamala made clear that her experience as California attorney general will allow her to deal with a convicted criminal accused of sexual abuse and 34 fraud charges. “I know guys like Donald Trump,” she said with a grimace of a smile.

Nancy Pelosi described her as a “brilliantly astute” woman. That strong temperament will serve her well when she crosses swords with Trump on September 10 in the second presidential debate.

During her first campaign speech, Kamala articulated, with a single question, the predicament facing more than 150 million eligible voters in 2024.

“What country do we want to live in? In a country of freedom, compassion and the rule of law. Or in a country of chaos, fear and hatred?” The answer to that question remains up in the air to be answered at the polls with your vote on Tuesday, November 5.

BIDEN DROPPING OUT OF 2024 RACE 'HEALTHY FOR DEMOCRACY'

Overthe weekend, while self-isolating and recovering from COVID, President Joe Biden announced he is stepping down as the Democratic candidate in the 2024 election.

Biden officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to become the new Democratic nominee.

Nina Eliasoph, professor of sociology at the University of Southern California, said while the announcement comes amid a tumultuous race, it shows democracy is alive.

"It would've been healthier to have done it earlier but I think if there was a shift, it would actually be really healthy for democracy," Eliasoph explained.

"Because it would show that Democrats at least really care about the truth. About what the person who is supposed to be leading the country is like."

Eliasoph pointed out Biden struggled to sell the public on his ability to do the job and his policy wins, which she said eroded confidence in the party and among voters. Biden will finish out his term, which has sparked criticism from Republicans, who said if he is unfit for reelection, he should resign now.

In a statement, Harris said she will work to unite the Democratic Party and the nation, even as some Democrats call for an open nomination process.

Biden's decision to drop out of the race comes as many congressional Democrats publicly called for him to step aside following his shaky performance in last month's debate against former President Donald Trump.

Eliasoph predicted the president likely faced more

"It's really risky for them -- not personally, necessarily, but for the party -- because if they say he should resign and he doesn't, it looks terrible," Eliasoph stressed. "You can bet on it, that if for every Democrat that's saying publicly he should resign, there's a lot who are saying privately that he should resign."

Eliasoph added her advice to voters would be to show their support for a party this election cycle, rather than the presidential candidate.

"They assemble staffs that put out the legislation," Eliasoph asserted. "That is why those lower-level, 'invisible' people who parties and legislators pick are really the main characters."

Many Democrats are thanking Biden for his years of service to the country and hope his decision will give them a better chance at defeating Trump in November. Republicans said the move will likely be met with legal challenges.

LA RETIRADA DE BIDEN DE LA CARRERA DE 2024 ES "SALUDABLE PARA LA DEMOCRACIA"

Alex Gonzalez Public News Service

PROTECTING THE HEALTH OF THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY: 3 THINGS YOU CAN DO

StatePoint

TheLGBTQ+ community celebrated their shared and lived experience this June during Pride Month. While the LGBTQ+ experience varies from individual to individual and from generation to generation, one constant remains – the importance of protecting health.

“We celebrate Pride because we are proud of who we are, what we have accomplished and where we are heading in advancing health equity,” says Brian Hujdich, executive director of the National Coalition for LGBTQ Health. “Part of protecting health – for ourselves and for the community – is focusing on prevention.”

Following are three important preventive health measures to take not only during Pride season, but all year long.

Prevent infectious diseases

Mpox has remained a public health threat since it first captured headlines in 2022. Infections in the United States are more than double those reported at this time last year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – and a surge in cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo could lead to further escalation globally.

A virus similar to smallpox, mpox can affect anyone. However, the recent outbreak predominantly affected the LGBTQ+ community, underscoring the need for prevention. According to the CDC, mpox is spread by direct skin-to-skin contact and people most at risk include gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, as well as transgender or nonbinary people. Sixty percent of the at-risk population remains unvaccinated, and 15% have received only one dose of the vaccine, according to the CDC. To protect themselves, people at risk should ask their healthcare providers or pharmacists for more information and to determine if they should get the vaccine, which is available at physician offices, pharmacies and local health clinics.

Preventing HIV infection and sexually trans-

mitted infections (STIs) may be another important issue to discuss with your doctor. Prophylactic medications like PrEP can help prevent HIV infection, while doxycycline can help stop the onset of STIs.

Engage with your healthcare provider

Having a provider who is LGBTQ+ culturally competent is just as important as preventive health measures. In fact, studies show that those who aren’t comfortable having open and honest conversations with their provider suffer worse health outcomes than others. You can research a provider’s background and interest in LGBTQ+ health care, and schedule an introductory appointment to meet them and gauge your comfort level.

Protect the community

Having pride in the community means taking steps to protect everyone’s health. Mpox serves as a case in point. If enough people are vaccinated, viruses may have limited opportunities to infect new people, ultimately often posing less threat to the community overall. Conversely, if a virus is left unchecked, it can mutate; it may also grow in strength or in transmissibility and put more people at risk.

It’s important to remember the power of community and conversation. Discuss these health topics with your friends, ask each other questions, and raise awareness. As you continue to celebrate Pride all year long, focus on protecting your health using the tools available to you.

For more information about protecting your health, visit the National Coalition for LGBTQ Health: https://healthlgbtq.org/mpox/.

“The LGBTQ+ community has a legacy of quickly and collectively adapting to health concerns,” says Hujdich. “Being proactive in protecting your well-being allows you the freedom to fully enjoy yourself during Pride, throughout the summer, and all year long.”

PROTEGER LA SALUD DE LA COMUNIDAD LGBTQ+: 3 COSAS QUE PUEDE HACER

StatePoint

POLITICS TAKE CENTER STAGE AT NATIONAL CONVENTION FOR EDUCATORS

Suzanne Potter California News Service

After a historic weekend, politics turned out to be the major topic Monday July 22 at the national convention of more than 3,500 teachers union members.

The American Federation of Teachers, which is holding its biennial conference in Houston, is one of the groups to endorsed Kamala Harris for President.

Randi Weingarten, president of the federation, praised the Biden/Harris administration's commitment to public education, while accusing Republicans of undermining workers' rights and attacking academic freedom.

"When the history books are written about this moment, let them record that we the people united, mobilized, and voted down this existential threat to democracy and freedom," Weingarten stated.

Conservatives have argued public employee unions are too powerful. Weingarten criticized the Trump administration's support of school vouch-

ers, arguing they largely help wealthy families pay for private or religious schools, diverting funds from public education.

The union leader also slammed efforts across the country to ban controversial books in school libraries and restrict teaching on history, social justice and climate change.

"They fear what we do: The teaching of reason, of critical thinking, of honest history, of pluralism," Weingarten asserted.

"Because their brand of greed, of power, of privilege cannot survive in a democracy of diverse, educated citizens."

Cassondra Curiel, a middle school English teacher and president of the United Educators of San Francisco, believes the administrations of Gov. Gavin Newsom and President Joe Biden have improved education funding in recent years, but said much more needs to be done.

"Pre-COVID, California was the 46th funded public education system in the country and post-COVID, we've now risen to 36th," Curiel pointed out. "As the fifth-largest economy in

Leaders at the conference also called for stricter gun laws, to reduce the likelihood of school shootings going forward.

KAMALA HARRIS IMMEDIATELY GAINS

BLACK, LATINO, AAPI SUPPORT AS BIDEN STEPS DOWN

It would be 'political malpractice' for anyone other than Kamala Harris to head the Democratic presidential ticket, says Shekar Narasimhan, chairman of the AAPI Victory Fund.

AfterKAMALA HARRIS OBTIENE INMEDIATO APOYO DE NEGROS, LATINOS Y AAPI DESPUÉS DE RENUNCIA DE BIDEN

three weeks of intense pressure from members of his own party to step down, President Joe Biden announced July 21 that he would not seek re-election and immediately endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” said Biden in a statement.

“While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus entirely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” he said.

About an hour later, Harris, the first Black, South Asian and female Vice President, said she would seek the nomination. In a speech last week at the APIAVote Presidential Hall, Harris said: “This is the most existential, consequential, and important election of our lifetime.” She roundly condemned Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump, who may now be her opponent.

Biden’s Legacy

Both the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus immediately endorsed Harris. Shekar Narasimhan, co-founder and chair of the powerful AAPI Victory Fund told Ethnic Media Services as news was breaking that his organization firmly endorses Harris. “We will work very hard to make sure she is the nominee,” he said. “Both for the legacy of Biden and for the sake of keeping the large Democratic coalition intact, it would be political malpractice for us not to nominate her.”

“Kamala Harris inherits the apparatus of the campaign. She is the logical nominee.”

Explaining the process, Narasimhan said Harris — and other Democrats who wish to step in to the race — would have to get a minimum of 300 pledged and signed delegates by Aug. 1. The nominee would then be announced Aug. 6. “The real surprise will be the vice presidential pick,” he said.

The Democratic National Convention begins Aug. 19 in Chicago, Illinois.

Carole Porter used to ride the bus with Harris from the Berkeley flatlands up to Thousand Oaks Elementary School in the early 1970s. The two have been close friends ever since. “Kamala is absolutely the right person for this job. She has worked so hard to get here and will break that last glass barrier.”

Porter has supported Harris since 2004, when she campaigned on the streets of San Francisco, using a fold-up ironing board on which to place flyers in her run for the District Attorney’s office. “I knew, even back then, that there would be a path for her to get here,” she said.

“Kamala is not only going to re-energize the base. She’s going to bring more people in: Gen Zs, the working class, women, among others. She is lifting us all up,” said Porter.

“I’m here to support the best person for this job, and that is Kamala Devi Harris,” said Porter. “I’ll do whatever she needs me to do to get her to where she deserves to be.”

Race Shakes Up

Political science professor Karthick Ramakrishnan, founder of AAPI Data, told Ethnic Media Services that there has been a high level of dissatisfaction by Democrats and Republicans for their party’s nominees. “Biden’s debate performance put Democrats in a deeper deficit, although that was not reflected in polling numbers. But it was

starting to look like a landslide for Trump.”

“This completely shakes up the race. It’s likely more of a toss up now, and a real danger for Trump,” said Ramakrishnan. Trump has called his now apparent opponent “crazy,” and “nuts.” Minutes after Biden dropped out, Trump’s campaign launched into an attack on Harris.

Ramakrishnan noted that California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer have both stated they will not run. The wild card is former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, he said, adding that Latinos have felt a lack of visibility within this administration. Castro was one of the earliest to call for Biden to step down.

Wild Card Julian Castro

“Kamala Harris has been an excellent Vice President, an electric campaigner, and is the strongest candidate to defeat Donald Trump,” said Castro on X/Twitter, shortly after the announcement.

Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Arizona, would make a good vice presidential pick said Ramakrishnan, noting that the husband of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, permanently disabled after an assassination attempt, is one of the strongest advocates for gun control.

Robert Camacho, a Latino elected delegate from California’s CD11, had mixed emotions about Biden stepping down. He and his husband Tim Miller spent a day with Biden last month when he came to the San Francisco Bay Area, and also met the President at the White House on June 15, 2022 when he signed an executive order protecting LGBTQ+ rights.

The LGBTQ+ Vote

“I feel like someone has attacked my family member,” he said, weeping as he spoke. “In Biden, I saw a man that gave his all in trying to make our lives better. He is and will always be a true leader.”

“It was heartbreaking for me to see the President go through the media attacks. We have had presidents with disabilities who served us well,” said Camacho, referring to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who served four terms, though afflicted with polio. “This was really disrespectful,” he said.

Camacho serves on the DNC’s Finance Committee, and has volunteered with the White House’s Office of Public Engagement’s outreach to the Latino community. He dismissed media chatter about Hispanics reportedly turning to Trump, saying polls consisting of not more than 2,000 people could not accurately represent a voting population of 14 million people.

Camacho said he will now firmly throw his support behind Harris.

trito.

BIG CHANGES COMING FOR BUYING, SELLING HOMES IN CA , NATIONWIDE

Bigchanges are imminent in the way homes are bought and sold, as the new forms for transactions in California are coming.

The forms are linked to the proposed legal settlement by the National Association of Realtors, which ends the long-standing practice of having a home seller's agent pay a commission to the buyer's agent. It benefited buyers who may not have saved up enough money to pay their agent.

George Lopez, a real estate agent in Indian Wells, explained buyers will now have to negotiate a separate contract to hire and pay their own agent.

"Even with these changes, a buyer can still purchase a home without having the money to pay their agent," Lopez explained. "The general public needs to understand that the real estate commissions have been, and will always be, negotiable - and that if they don't have money to pay their agent, they can still potentially negotiate it in their sale."

The lawsuit contended the old way of selling homes tended to drive up costs, as buyers' agents had more incentive to steer people to sellers willing to pay a higher commission. The changes are intended to empower homebuyers to negotiate for a better deal.

Lopez thinks most sellers will still offer to pay a real estate broker, rather than risk losing out on a big chunk of the prospective buyer pool. But it will have to be negotiated in the offer, as commissions will no longer be stated in the Multiple Listing Service. The changes also mean buyers' agents cannot just meet prospective clients "on the fly" anymore, to go check out a home for sale.

"You have to meet me at the office; we

have to have a meeting," Lopez pointed out. "We have to have an agreement in place that said that you're hiring me, or I can't show you any homes."

The new forms real estate agents use to complete transactions will take effect nationwide on Aug. 17.

men de aislamiento.

CALIFORNIA SAYS ICE DETAINEES HAVE LABOR RIGHTS. THEY EARN $1 A DAY SCRUBBING BATHROOMS

Jeanne Kuang CalMatters

Evenwith all the industries where Californians went on strike during last year’s “hot labor summer,” some of the most active sites of organizing in the state may well be a pair of private immigration detention centers in the Central Valley.

The Mesa Verde and Golden State Annex facilities, operated by The GEO Group, a Floridabased federal detention contractor, have been a hotbed of activism since the pandemic. But it’s not The GEO Group’s staff agitating for better pay and working conditions.

It’s their detainees — immigrants awaiting the outcomes of deportation cases or asylum claims, many of whom also work where they’re jailed, scrubbing bathrooms and cutting hair for $1 a day.

Detainees in the two Kern County facilities said this month they started the second labor and hunger strike in two years to protest poor working and living conditions. Two years ago, they sued over the program’s wages.

And during the 2022 strike, they prompted California workplace safety regulators to inspect the Golden State Annex facility and issue a citation to The GEO Group — showing how far the state is pushing the traditional boundaries of labor rights.

The case, alleging a “willful and serious” violation of state labor laws meant to prevent the spread

of COVID-19, has turned heads. Labor and immigration policy experts believe it is the first time the state has treated detained immigrants as employees who benefit from workplace safety protections. The case is before a three-member appeals board of Cal/OSHA — the state’s occupational safety and health agency — as California grapples with whether to expand labor rights to state prisoners, including a proposition on the November ballot.

Even more novel: The state’s Division of Occu-

pational Safety and Health in May sent the U.S. Department of Homeland Security a request not to deport seven complainants for at least two years, under a Biden administration program to temporarily protect immigrant workers who are assisting with labor investigations.

“Cal/OSHA cannot properly pursue enforcement action without the cooperation of worker detainees in these situations,” agency chief Debra Lee wrote.

It’s “highly unusual, if not unique” for the state to ask federal immigration authorities to temporarily waive deportation for state witnesses against the immigration authorities’ contractor, said Anastasia Christman, senior policy analyst at the National Employment Law Project.

Cal/OSHA spokesperson Erika Monterroza declined to comment on the case as it is being appealed by the company. A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson also declined to comment.

The GEO Group’s corporate counsel Spencer Winepol did not respond to multiple requests for comment about detainees’ complaints, the Cal/OSHA citation or the current labor and hunger strikes.

The company, in its appeal of the citation and in prior public statements, has denied that detainees should be considered employees who were exposed to workplace hazards. It also argues the alleged violation was only technical, and has been corrected.

In the complaint, detainees said they weren’t informed of close contacts with others who had COVID-19; the state’s citation alleges the company did not maintain a required written plan for preventing the spread of the virus.

The company “vehemently disputes the notion that any of these individuals are employees,” attorneys for The GEO Group wrote to a Cal/ OSHA appeals board administrative law judge in April 2023. “Rather, the named detainees were voluntary participants in a federally established Voluntary Work Program, de-

signed to offer rehabilitation and job skill training.”

If the citation is upheld, it would be a victory for immigrants’ advocates who have pushed unsuccessfully for years to curb private detention facilities in California.

“It is uncharted territory both in terms of worker issues but also uncharted territory overall about what California can and can’t do versus these private entities,” said Hamid Yazdan Panah, advocacy director of Immigrant Defense Advocates, which has backed a ban on private detention in California. “We’ve continuously pushed the envelope on that.”

California fights private detention centers

In one of many moves against the Trump administration, state lawmakers in 2019 tried to ban private immigration detention centers from operating in California.

The for-profit facilities “contribute to over-incarceration” and “do not reflect our values,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement when signing the bill.

Instead, the Trump administration expanded immigration detention beds in California, including with The GEO Group, a global private prison giant that reported $2.4 billion in revenues last year. Under its new contract, the company opened the Golden State Annex facility in McFarland and immigration authorities began sending detainees there in 2020.

ICE pays the company to hold as many as 880 immigrants in its Golden State Annex and Mesa Verde facilities, though the numbers have been far lower, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, a regularly updated database of immigration records at Syracuse University.

The company and federal government sued over California’s ban. It was ultimately overturned last year by the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, which ruled the state was unconstitutionally overstepping on federal immigration enforcement.

But during the COVID pandemic, as outbreaks hit Mesa Verde and other ICE detention centers in California, there appeared to be confusion over whether local health departments had jurisdiction. Advocates called for stricter regulations.

In 2021, Newsom signed a law clarifying the facilities had to abide by local and state health orders. Another provision made them subject to state workplace safety rules.

One of the complainants in the Cal/OSHA case said he

was sent to Golden State in late 2021, after being released from a state prison. But the living conditions, such as the food, were worse in the detention centers, he said.

The man, who was released last year after nearly two years in detention, spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of jeopardizing ongoing legal cases. He said that he contracted COVID-19 in a dorm room with dozens of other detainees — allegations echoed in the Cal/OSHA complaint.

“I’m not going to say prison is a good thing, but a state prison is far more well-conditioned to be housed in,” he said.

Detainee jobs worse than prisoners?

The jobs were worse, too, the former detainee said, even as most California prison jobs pay less than 74 cents an hour.

ICE requires its detention contractors to provide voluntary work programs that improve “essential operations and services” and reduce the “negative impact of confinement” through “decreased idleness, improved morale and fewer disciplinary incidents.” While the work can take as many as eight hours a day, ICE requires the jobs to pay “at least” $1 a day; its contracts with The GEO Group show that’s how much the company budgets for the program.

Many participants take the jobs to afford food and hygiene products from the commissary, or phone calls to family.

(A limited number of calls were free during the pandemic, but that’s recently been revoked, advocates said.) Common assignments include cleaning the dorms and bathrooms, and cutting fellow detainees’ hair.

Some even help care for other detainees. Ever Oropeza-Paz, who has been detained at the Golden State Annex for nearly two years, said he spent

several months working as an aide for a dormmate who had a mental health condition. Oropeza-Paz said he was paid $1 a day to assist with basic tasks such as buying items in the commissary, using a tablet to communicate and teaching him how to shower.

“People are forced to work,” said Oropeza-Paz, who does not currently have a job in the facility. “They do it just to have the funds to make a quick call to their relatives.”

Critics of immigration detention have challenged the work program’s legality around the country.

Washington state’s attorney general and a group of detainees sued The GEO Group in 2017, arguing participants should have been paid the state minimum wage, which was $11 an hour at the time. A federal jury decided in 2021 the company owed $17 million in back wages to hundreds of immigrants who had cooked and cleaned.

“People are forced to work. They do it just to have the funds to make a quick call to their relatives.”

-EVER OROPEZA-PAZ, DETAINED AT THE GOLDEN STATE ANNEX

In a lawsuit challenging the program at The GEO Group’s detention center in Adelanto, California, a federal judge decided in 2022 the detainees should be considered employees because the contractor paid them and dictated their hours and working conditions. The case is on hold as the Washington case is appealed.

And in July 2022, nine detainees at Mesa Verde and Golden State, represented by attorneys at the the California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice, sued The GEO Group over the work program’s wages.

At Golden State, the advocacy

organization also helped file a workplace safety complaint. Detainees there complained of cleaning black mold without protective equipment, black dust in the heating and air conditioning system, and a lack of COVID-19 notification and testing protocols.

“There’s fungus on the bathroom floor, on the shower walls,” said the former detainee who made the comparison to state prisons and who echoed allegations in the Cal/ OSHA complaint. “We weren’t given the proper equipment, we weren’t given the proper chemicals … We didn’t even get a small talk of what everything’s for.”

The detainees staged a work stoppage that summer. It ended up lasting nearly a year, into 2023, and escalated into a hunger strike. In a civil rights complaint to the Department of Homeland Security and a 2023 lawsuit, detainees claimed they experienced retaliation, including having family visits suspended and being placed in solitary confinement. They withdrew the suit when they ended the strikes.

The company told KQED in 2022 it didn’t consider detainees “choosing not to participate in a voluntary work program” to be on strike, and told other local media outlets last year that allegations of abuse were “baseless.”

A recent inspection of Golden State by the Department of Homeland Security’s internal watchdog office found GEO Group staff were slow to respond to some medical complaints from detainees, and hadn’t fixed leaks that regularly caused pools of water on the floor, “forcing detainees to live in a potentially dangerous setting.”

But the department’s inspector general said the work program didn’t violate any ICE policies.

Detention company resists

Cal/OSHA accuses The GEO Group of resisting state inspections, according to case records obtained by CalMatters through a public records request.

After the agency opened an investigation in June 2022, The GEO Group “refused to produce any documents pertaining to worker detainees, taking the position that worker detainees are not employees” and told inspectors to request documents from ICE, Cal/ OSHA senior safety engineer Greg Clark later declared in a court filing. But an August 2022 memo shows GEO employee and facility administrator Minga Wofford told Clark’s colleague that ICE wanted requests routed “through the facility.”

Wofford declined to comment.

When Clark and a colleague visited in August 2022 for a second inspection, Clark said the company “denied us access to worker detainees to conduct interviews with them.”

Cal/OSHA eventually got a warrant from a Kern County judge for the company to turn over documents about the work program and allow inspectors to speak with detainees. An inspector returned to the facility three times in December 2022, and issued citations that month, barely missing the six-month cutoff after which an investigation must be closed.

Among the citations are that the company blocked access to a chemical eyewash station, didn’t properly label chemicals in the barbershop and train workers on their uses, and failed to have a written plan to prevent the spread of airborne diseases such as COVID-19. Because there had been COVID cases, the agency issued that citation as a “serious” violation, bumping the total fines up to over $100,000.

Over the past year and a half, the appeals have centered on

whether the California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice and other advocacy groups, representing the detainees, can also participate in the legal case.

The GEO Group has pushed back, arguing that several of the detainees involved no longer are housed in the facility and that none were exposed to actual hazards in the work program.

“The citation in question is for a written policy deficiency,” company attorneys wrote to the Cal/OSHA appeals board last October. The detainees’ attorneys and Cal/OSHA disagreed; agency attorney Lidia Marquez wrote that “workerdetainees tasked with cleaning and maintenance assignments found themselves directly exposed to the hazard” of being at a higher risk of contracting the virus.

As those proceedings dragged out, Cal/OSHA asked the federal government to help keep the complainants in the country.

Cal/OSHA first tried in April 2023, and then again in May, this time writing to the Department of Homeland Security that the case will fall apart without witnesses and naming specific immigrants the state hopes can testify. One of the witnesses Cal/OSHA had interviewed, agency director Lee wrote, had already been deported.

“There have already been an alarming number of reports by worker detainees stating they are facing retaliation for cooperating with Cal/OSHA’s investigation,” she wrote. “The loss of one witness is a setback to Cal/OSHA’s enforcement action, which is why immediate protection for the remaining witnesses is critical.”

Homeland Security declined to comment on Cal/OSHA’s request in The GEO Group case, and a spokesperson did not answer questions about the deportation protection program, known as deferred action. Earlier this year, the department said it’s granted more than 1,000 workers involved in labor investigations nationwide such protections.

It’s not clear how the department will handle California’s request. Lisa Knox, co-director of the collaborative representing detainees, said the workers are still in the process of using Cal/OSHA’s letter to apply for deportation protections individually.

Meanwhile, ICE has steadily sent more immigrants to the Golden State center. Records show the detainee population in June was more than 300 people — double the number a year ago.

MYCHAL THREETS HOSTS SCREENING OF HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON AND HELPS TO ORGANIZE DONATION OF 150 COPIES OF BOOK WHICH NEW MOVIE IS BASED ON

Sony Pictures Entertainment

MychalThreets, the librarian who touched the hearts of many and went viral for his heartwarming stories on TikTok and Instagram, and collaborator on PBS Kids, participated in a special collaboration with Sony Pictures’ Harold And The Purple Crayon which releases exclusively in movie theaters on August 2, 2024.

The family-friendly movie, which is the first film adaptation of the beloved children’s classic that has captivated young readers for decades, stars Zachary Levi, Zoey Deschanel and Lil Rel Howery.

Mychal hosted a screening in San Francisco, CA, in partnership with the studio that included guests from the San Francisco Library, and organizations such as La Raza Community Center, and Jack and Jill. His love for books and literacy was evident during the night as Threets read Harold and the Purple Crayon to the audience before they watched the film on the big screen.

Additionally, 150 Harold and the Purple Crayon books were donated on his behalf to the Dixon Library in Solano County, California this summer – a library in which Threets spent almost a decade, and most of his career as a Supervising Librarian. With these books, thanks to Threets and the Dixon Library, they’ve helped encourage literacy and imagination in the hearts of the children this summer in Dixon, CA, through its various reading programs.

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE: BRINGING TOGETHER TWO COMIC BOOK GREATS INTO AN ADVENTURE OF CHAOS AND CAMARADERIE

aters now.

Hittingtheaters January 26, 2024 is a partnership between two Marvel comics legends, one a stoic, legendary X-Man, the other a comedic mercenary with a plethora of foul language in his arsenal.

Deadpool & Wolverine unites Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman with their most famous superhero alter egos, Wade Wilson (Deadpool) and Logan (Wolverine).

Bringing these two characters into one story doesn’t seem like the most obvious team up, but in hindsight it allows the most comedic and fourth-wall-breaking character in the Marvel universe to team up with one of the most feared but beloved X-Men in an adventure that crosses universes and time in an unparalleled way. It is something that within the comics that has been a fan favorite, now it gets to be brought o the silver screen.

Director Shawn Levy, who has been a prolific auteur in Hollywood for decades, has directed such projects as 2003’s Cheaper by the Dozen, the Night at the Museum trilogy, and most recently two different Ryan Reynolds films, The Adam Project and Free Guy.

It was during the filming of The Adam Project that Reynolds approached Levy to helm a new Deadpool feature. Now he gets the chance to guide the first Marvel Studios R-rated feature with two of the biggest personalities in the world, and bring heart and levity to the very violent worlds of both Deadpool and Wolverine in a buddy actioncomedy.

Recently the cast and crew of the new superhero film gathered to talk about the creation and thought behind the bridging of two super properties into one chaotic adventure. The following are highlights of the press conference.

Deadpool & Wolverine is exclusively in the-

What made directing Deadpool and Wolverine your perfect entry into the MCU as a director?

SHAWN LEVY: Well, I think I got really lucky. I got really, really lucky because I got to be the first filmmaker to put this duo together onscreen. And I also got to do it, I mean, I think the MCU is always at its best when it is giving us something that we don’t expect. And under this banner, you have the capac-

clicked with. And then of course, Shawn and I were shooting The Adam Project in Vancouver and I kinda said to him, “look, I think the only way I would do this is if I was not just writing this with you…but if you direct it, I would be into doing this.”

And then Shawn, yeah, just basically took his white glove off and slapped the side of my face with it like some sort of ‘20s harlot and said, “My glove to your damned insolent cheek, child.” And then for some reason after that said yes. And we’ve been on this

ity for a Ragnarök to sit alongside a Black Panther and an Ironman.

Ryan, when you heard that Disney owned Fox and that Deadpool was gonna be in the MCU, what was your reaction and expectation?

RYAN REYNOLDS: What was my expectation? I had no expectations. I’ve built a career on really having as few expectations as possible.

You know, and it really does prevent crippling disappointment. But I, you know, I’d met with Kevin and we had a really great meeting. This is five years ago, six years ago was our first kind of chat about the movie five years ago. And it was just, it was a very slow process. I mean, it wasn’t so much about pitching different ideas, which I did pitch many different ideas, but it was about pitching idea that both of us genuinely

insane, wonderful journey ever since. And, of course, none of this came to reality until Mr. Hugh Jackman decided one day to, yeah, to levitate down from the clouds or whatever sort of heaven nest he lives in and bless us with his presence on this film.

And on that note, Hugh, we know that you had hung up the Wolverine suit after Logan. What made you wanna come back?

HUGH JACKMAN: The real suit. No. [laughs] I watched Deadpool three days after announcing that Logan would be my last, and I remember thinking “oops.” Because I could see the movie. Listen, this wasn’t new to me ever since I played Wolverine, people have been talking about Deadpool and Wolverine and their rivalry from the comic books. And then of course, we had a sort of go at it with X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

But I could feel it. I could see it. It was Midnight Run. It was 48 Hours. It was The Odd Couple. Trains, Planes, Automobiles. It was all these great sort of matchups that I could feel. And we toyed with the idea, but it was August 14th, 2022 and I don’t know why, I just knew every cell in my body was yelling at me, “I wanna do this movie.” So much so that I pulled my car over from the side of the road and I rang Ryan immediately. ‘Cause I knew that they were getting close to filming. I thought they may have even been filming. And I asked him and thankfully he said yes. Why does this movie need to be experienced in theaters?

RYAN: It is built for theaters. And there’s a thing that I love, and we’ve talked about this before, called collective effervescence.

And collective effervescence is basically when you get to experience a kind of elation that can only happen in a group or a shared experience. And movie theaters, since I was as small as I can remember, have been a temple of collective effervescence. And so, seeing a movie, especially one like this that is quite literally built as a fastball of joy, that is built for audience delight, that its sole purpose for being written and produced and created was joy.

Disney may say money or something about capitalism. But really genuinely, from our perspective, everyone sitting right here, it’s joy. And that is joy best experienced on a bigger the screen, the better.

HUGH: Can I add something? I think also, the movie is funny, it’s huge action, it’s massive, it’s all those things you want. But it’s also about friendship, and I think going to a cinema, whether it’s a friend or just someone close to you, I know it’s gonna be an experience that you’re gonna want to enjoy with others.

And as you said, in a temple or whatever that is, a modern-day temple. Going to a cinema, I think that with friends or people close to you is gonna make this experience the best.

CA POLITICAL ANALYSTS

PROJECT CLOSE RACE AS BIDEN ENDORSES HARRIS

Suzanne Potter California News Service

California political analysts predict the race for president will tighten since President Joe Biden has dropped out and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.

If elected, Harris would be the first Black woman and first person of Asian descent to ascend to the highest office in the land.

Lynn Vavreck, professor of political science at the University of California-Los Angeles, predicted it will re-energize the race on the Democratic side.

"There will be a flood of money coming into whatever the new ticket is likely to be," Vavreck pointed out. "The race will once again tighten to be somewhere around 50/50. That will roll us into the Democratic convention. And from that point forward, it's not that long until early voting starts."

Harris has vowed to "earn and win" the nomination at the Democratic National Convention, which starts in Chicago on August 19. It is unclear if anyone will challenge Harris for the nomination, or whom she might choose as a running mate.

Mark Baldassare, survey director for the Public Policy Institute of California, noted Harris previously served as a U.S. Senator from California, Attorney General of the Golden State,

LOS ANALISTAS POLÍTICOS DE CA PROYECTAN UNA CARRERA REÑIDA MIENTRAS BIDEN RESPALDA A HARRIS

and District Attorney for San Francisco.

"This is somebody who has a long history of public service at the local, state and national levels," Baldassare emphasized. "And of course, spent three years as the vice president, which is very relevant (to) somebody who would step into the Oval Office and become president."

Harris is a strong supporter of abortion rights, voting rights, social justice and environmental causes.
