WHO WILL YOU VOTE FOR? HILLARY OR DONALD?
Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR This week Hillary Clinton became the official Democratic Party's Presidential candidate. Between now and Election Day, Tuesday, November 8, 2016, each registered voter will have the opportunity and responsibility to glean the facts and truth from all the propaganda hype which each party will generate. The contrast between the National Republican Convention in Cleveland, Ohio and the National Democratic Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania could not be more different. The Republican advocates, especially its candidate for President, Donald J. Trump, used all methods which divide us; demean us all as being imperfect, which propose ideas contrary to the ideals succinctly stated in the U.S. Constitution, and did not present a single proposal to be used to address the many public policy issues
which were 'stone-walled' by the U.S. Congress for the past 5.5 years by the Republican Majority congressional leadership. The Republican Presidential Candidate, Donald J. Trump, directly says that “I have all the answers to our national challenges'... I will make America great again”. And keep in mind that as a billionaire, Trump has directed his non-traditional campaign efforts plus his rhetoric uses terms which are designed to divide and conquer each and every ethnic group. In contrast, the Democratic National Convention, took care of business. First, it fired its DNC leader for failing to be even-handed in dealing with support for the Bernie Sanders vs. Hillary Clinton campaign efforts. So Senator Debbie Wasserman Schultz was dismissed just prior to the start of the DNC event where traditionally, she would have been wielding the gavel. In addition, the DNC Rules Committee followed traditional procedures by sustaining the 'Voice Vote' process where Senator Bernie Sanders was placed in nomination against Secretary Hilton; and the delegates voted for either Bernie or Hillary. Hillary prevailed by receiving
enough votes to become the first woman Democratic Party presidential candidate. And Bernie graciously and properly made the motion to declare Hillary as the Democratic Party Presidential Candidate 'by acclamation'. That motion carried (was accepted) so Hillary and the Democratic Party made history by supporting the first woman presidential candidate. Hillary will accepted their nomination on Thursday, July 28th before the DNC adjourns. What happened behind the scenes off camera is that several meetings between Bernie and Hillary's supporters happened wherein all of Bernie's Platform public policy issues were incorporated into the official DNC platform. Bernie's campaign was a success in this regard, plus Bernie projected his agreement to “do anything and everything” needed to defeat Donald J. Trump. The Democrats publicly and privately negotiated and compromised most of their public policy differences. Bernie's Supporters had succeeded! The Democratic Party will address the public policy issues which have been stonewalled by the congressional
Republican Party majority in both the House and the Senate. The stage is set to attempt to establish a Democratic Party Majority in both the Senate and the House. Already, Hillary Clinton's supporters are telegraphing their efforts to deal with many public policy matters during the first 100 days of the projected administration of Hillary Clinton as the first woman president of the United States of America...the only nation that is the world's greatest superpower today! So registered voters will need to think about making history by voting for the first woman President of the United States along with thereestablishment of a Democratic majorities in both houses of the U.S. Congress. Ideally, those Democratic majorities need to be large enough to prevent 'filibusters' by the projected future Republican Party minority. So it is essential that women and all 'middle class' voters keep in mind that they must elect not only the first woman as president, but also a Democratic Party majority in both the Senate and the House of the U.S. Congress. That is essential in order to eliminate any further 'stone-walling'
efforts by obstructionists who are influenced by 'Dark Money'. What will be your choice as a responsible registered voter? Stay in touch with what is happening because each and every one of you registered voters will have played a role in making a historical transition. The basic choice is about the following: Do you want a government which favors the top 0.1% (the ultra-wealthy & influential) or the bottom 90% who have not had a salary raise since 1975 (The Republican Reagan Administration)? Do take time to learn about all the public policy issues and then vote in your own best interests. I personally favor choosing those elected officials who will craft legislation which will do the greatest good for the greatest number rather than continuing the exploitation of those in the bottom 90%. It is time to make historical transitional choices. Elect congressional members who will compromise and negotiate. Who will you vote for: Hillary or Donald?

BOARD OF EDUCATION PASSES RESOLUTION
JULY 29-AUGUST 5, 2016
Santa Clara County Board of Education reaffirs its stance on anti-discrimination and gun safety reform SCCOE SAN JOSE, CA – On July 20, The Santa Clara County Board of Education passed a resolution reaffirming its focus on equality on anti-discrimination and gun safety reform in Santa Clara County schools and communities. It passed unanimously, with one board member absent. Written in response to a request by Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) employee Mike Bromberg during the June 15 Board of Education meeting, the resolution was supported by Board Member Darcie Green in “honor of ending gun violence and supporting gun control.” The resolution request was made shortly after the Orlando, Florida massacre, but remains timely in light of recent tragedies across the country. “Many school districts are looking to deepen their commitment to safety for vulnerable students, particularly LGBTQ students,” said Green. "We want to make sure that we’re leading on the issue of anti-discrimination and school safety in our region, and we have a history of protecting our most vulnerable children.” Santa Clara resident Anthony Becker, a candidate for the Santa Clara City Council Seat
6, addressed the Board to endorse the resolution on the behalf of the LGBTQ community and common sense gun owners. In his testimony, he urged the board to adopt the resolution because “we need better answers to these two issues.” He suggested legislation to pass common sense gun control laws which would include stricter background checks and bans on assault rifles. Green also asked the Board and SCCOE staff to “make sure we are up to date on all policies impacting bullying and LGBTQ students in particular.” Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mary Ann Dewan stated that Board policies have been updated within the past year through its policy committee and reflects current education code. The Gun-Free School Zone policy is currently under review and will be brought to the board in the coming months. The Santa Clara County Board of Education will not only advocate on these issues within the local education community but also at the state and federal level. Board Member, Joseph Di Salvo, requested the board to consider endorsing the California ‘Safety for All’ Gun Initiative lead by Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, also known as Proposition 63 at a future meeting.
SUMMIT PUBLIC SCHOOLS ADVANCES TO FINAL ROUND OF NATIONAL CONTEST The Northern California-based public charter organization is named a finalist for their proposed redesign of the American high school
Redwood City – Summit Public Schools (Summit) announced this week that its proposal has advanced to the final round of the The Super School Project (XQ), a national open call to rethink and redesign the American high school. From an original pool of over 1,000 concepts, Summit is one of only 50 teams to advance to the final phase with its personalized learning high school design. The competition will award each of the five finalist organizations $10 million and provide ongoing support to help turn their proposed design into a high-performing high school. The winners are expected to be announced on August 4th. “The future of American education is personalized learning,” said Andrew Goldin, Summit’s Chief of Schools. “Projects like these enable us to think outside of the box and reimagine what school could look like, building upon what we’ve already learned works.” The XQ project focuses on creating a high school that better prepares students for the new, heightened demands of the modern world. The Summit team, in collaboration with faculty, parents, students, as well as California College of the Arts, Gensler, Silicon Schools Fund and Oakland community members, designed its proposed high school, Summit Elevate, to go beyond preparing students for success in college. The vision is for a high school that puts students in the center of their learning
and prepares them for true success in the new knowledge economy. At Summit Elevate, students would develop and practice weaving together their passions and expertise. The Summit team decided to focus on wellbeing when they unanimously agreed that academic success in high school and successful completion of a four-year college or university degree isn’t the true end-goal of the school experience. Rather, achieving well-being in all key aspects of our lives is. The high school is also designed to encourage students to build strong relationships and social connections so they engage in and positively impact their local and global community. The idea is to make students active, contributing members of society before they start college by supporting students in building a community of advisors and spending even more time out in the community for projects and internships that provide hands-on experiences in realworld projects. “We continue to learn more about how we can best set students up for success, not only in college and career, but in life,” said Summit’s Chief Academic Officer Adam Carter. “Through personalized learning, students are equipped with the skills and mindsets that prepare them for the real world.”

Planifique.

5 Ways to Say Goodbye to Your 'Sad Desk Lunch'
RECIPE/HOME
7
BPT
Stray from the PB and J. You're running out the door, already late and thinking about that important 8 a.m. meeting. Lunch is the last thing on your mind. In fact, you usually just pick something up from the deli line or local fast food place and hurry back to your desk. Sound familiar? You're not alone. Only one in five people actually ditch their desks during their lunch hour. When you feel your stomach growl, it's all too easy to grab something from the vending machine or - if you remember - to pack a cold turkey sandwich. But there are plenty of easy ways to spice up your lunchtime routine at work. Here are some tips to improve your mediocre midday meal:
Carros móviles de metal para vendedores, tamaños pequeño y grande
Peanut butter and jelly might be a staple, but it's time for a grown-up work lunch. You can find sandwich fixings that are not only easy and quick, but take your lunch to the next level. Try a gourmet chicken salad like the no-mayo Avocado Chicken Salad. It's a better-for-you option, saving you calories and fat, because it's made with Aveyo, a spread simply containing Hass avocado, white vinegar, olive oil, sea salt and lime juice. It takes the place of eggs and most of the oil, while still maintaining that classic creamy texture and flavor.
Find a new way to pack your salad. Walk away from your desk. Do you eat at your desk every day? You have a lunch break for a reason; so use it. You're busy and need a few minutes to recharge throughout the day. You'll come back refreshed and ready to be productive for the rest of the afternoon. Eating at your desk also means you're probably multi-tasking, not paying attention to your food. Leaving your desk will help you become a more mindful eater and you'll enjoy your meal more. Take a walk, socialize with coworkers, do something that gets you up and moving for at least 15 minutes.
Forget about soggy, wilted lettuce. One of the best ways to pack a salad is in a quart-sized canning jar. Put your dressing on the bottom, add in your lettuce, veggies and any other salad toppings. If you really want to kick up your salad game, Willow Tree Farm's new Sriracha Chicken Salad layers perfectly with leafy greens and adds a tasty spice to your salad. Everything stays separate until it's time to toss together. Simply pour the salad out into a bowl and you're ready to eat. Your salad will also last for a couple of days in the fridge, so you can make a few days' worth of lunches ahead of time.

Step away from the snack machine. You don't need those stale potato chips. You can bake your own with only six ingredients. Thickly slice two pounds of potatoes and coat them with olive oil and one tablespoon of salt. Season with cayenne and ground pepper. Arrange the slices on a greased baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes until potatoes are crisp and golden brown. Then, spread them out on parchment paper, sprinkle with salt and enjoy. Pack a handful of chips in your lunch each day for more crunch and less guilt.

INSTANT CAR PLATES Governor Signs MTC-Backed Bill Requiring Auto Dealers to Install Vehicle License Plates Immediately After Sale MTC Law enforcement will have an easier time catching toll evaders and other law-breakers thanks to MTC-supported legislation that requires car dealers to install vehicle license plates on all newly purchased vehicles rather than a generic paper tag. The measure, AB 516 by Assembly Speaker pro Tem Kevin Mullin (D-South San Francisco), was signed into law yesterday by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. The law will make it easier to identify vehicles involved in a crime or traffic accident as well as curb the rapidly growing problem of toll cheating by owners of cars

without license plates. “I am extremely pleased that Governor Brown has signed AB 516,” said Mullin. “I also appreciate the tremendous support of agencies like MTC. Not only will the bill provide critical information to law enforcement agencies to help solve crimes, it will also return millions of dollars in revenue to Californians that agencies like MTC have been unable to collect as a result of toll evasion on bridges, toll roads and express lanes. This is revenue that can be used to benefit the Bay Area and in the bigger picture, all Californians.”
MTC estimates that the Bay Area loses some $9 million annually in uncollected tolls, while Southern California toll roads and express lanes lose $10 million — funds that otherwise would be used to reinvest in California’s infrastructure. The Mullin bill requires that newly purchased cars leave the dealership with an identifying paper license plate instead of a generic tag. It is modeled after temporary license plate programs in over a dozen other states. Instead of an outdated, paper-based system for tracking new vehicle purchases, a
real-time database will be available for law enforcement as soon as a newly purchased car leaves the dealership. Permanent license plates will still be mailed to car purchasers by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Various law enforcement agencies and the California New Car Dealers Association supported the bill, as did more than 5,000 individuals who signed an online petition after Michael Bonanomi was killed in a 2013 hit-and-run accident on a Southern California street by a motorist driving a car with a temporary license plate.

Families with Children Face Housing Discrimination in Fremont SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Fremont, CA – Project Sentinel joined a class of aggrieved residents to file a housing discrimination lawsuit in federal court against Silvertree Mohave Homeowners’ Association (HOA) and Management Solutions. Both jointly manage Silvertree Mohave, a 108unit condominium complex in Fremont. The complaint alleges that for more than 15 years, the HOA and Management Solutions discriminated against families with children by unlawfully restricting children from playing in outdoor common areas and harassing the children living at the complex. A group of parents residing at the Silvertree Mohave complex contacted Project Sentinel for assistance in combatting discriminatory rules of conduct. Project Sentinel’s investigation resulted in evidence that the HOA Board of Directors and Management Solutions engaged in a longstanding and pervasive pattern of repeated, willful violations of fair housing law. Starting in 2000, the HOA and Management Solutions promulgated and enforcedrules prohibiting children under the age of 14 from playing outside, at any time, with or without adult supervision. Additional HOA rules, clearly targeted at children, prohibited “running, skating, skateboarding, bicycling, rollerblading, playing ball, or any kind of sports activity” in any common area, and imposed fines against families for any rule violations. The HOA removed grass from common areas to further discourage children from playing outside. The lawsuit alleges members of the HOA Board of Directors engaged in a protracted campaign of harassment,

intimidation, and surveillance of young children. For example, the lawsuit alleges a Board member regularly photographed young children in an attempt at intimidation. Despite repeated demands from residents to comply with fair housing laws, the Silvertree Mohave HOA and Management Solutions persisted in publishing and enforcing discriminatory rules. “Fair housing laws explicitly protect families with children from being singled out or treated less favorably from other residents,” stated Executive Director Ann Marquart. “Unreasonably restricting children from playing outdoors creates a significant impediment to housing choice. Rules such as those here – though unlawful – remain pervasive in many HOA communities in the Bay Area.” Residents of Fremont are encouraged to contact Project Sentinel toll-free at (888) 324-7468 for assistance with housing discrimination. BREAST CANCER EMERGENCY FUND TO EXPAND OUTREACH

Priority is Raising Awareness Among Prospective Donors and Low-Income Women, Including Non-Native English Speakers SAN FRANSISCO, Calif. - The Breast Cancer Emergency Fund (BCEF) announced on July 21st that it will expand its outreach in the South Bay Area to raise awareness about its services to prospective donors and low-income individuals undergoing cancer care, especially non-native English speakers. BCEF provides emergency financial support to low-income individuals battling breast cancer, enabling them to keep up vital medical treatments, avoid utility shut-off, prevent eviction, and maintain stable housing. “The Breast Cancer Emergency Fund was started by the staff of the AIDS Emergency Fund (AEF) 15 years ago,” said Sandra Nathan, Executive Director of the two organizations, who led a nine-month organizational restructuring process. “As AEF now moves forward to merge with the Positive Resource Center, BCEF will continue to grow as a free-standing organization focused solely on providing a financial safety net for clients involved in breast cancer care.“ Often low-income individuals are hourlywage earners who are not paid if they are unable to work while undergoing cancer treatment. To date, BCEF has provided more than $3 million in assistance to 2,500+ low-income women and their families. “The rising income inequality in the region, coupled with high increases in rents, create extreme hardship for individuals and families coping with breast cancer,” said BCEF Board Chair Heather Renshaw Vučetin, “So many of our new clients are low-income women of color who have no other place to turn for help. Getting sick with cancer can be devastating for these women and for their families. At BCEF, we are committed to being there for the women who need us, and we are excited to move into this next phase of outreach and awareness to ensure that they can find us when they need us.”
To support this expanded outreach, BCEF has hired Cindy Chimal, a new bilingual client services manager. Chimal is a certified health education specialist and has worked in case management and counseling for clients in a number of organizations, including the Alum Rock Counseling Center, Tenderloin Housing Clinic and most recently as a Health Worker in the San Francisco Department of Public Health in the Housing and Urban Housing office. “The emergency financial assistance that BCEF provides through its network of partners is a lifeline to clients,” said Nathan. “We will continue providing this vital support, while also raising awareness about BCEF services among low-income, non-native English speakers.” According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in America will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Also, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women. Foundations, fundraising activities, and corporate and individual donations fund BCEF. The organization provides immediate, compassionate emergency financial support, usually in two to five days. The 2016 report by the Cancer Prevention Institute of California revealed that from 2009 through 2013, there were 156,292 new cases of cancer diagnosed in the Greater Bay Area. The five most common invasive cancer sites in the Greater Bay Area were breast, prostate, lung and bronchus, colorectal, and melanoma. These cancers accounted for over half of all newly diagnosed cases. “The Breast Cancer Emergency Fund is an important resource for Latinas battling cancer in Santa Clara County,” said Ysabel Duron, Executive Director, Latinas Contra Cancer. “We look forward to working closely with BCEF to raise awareness about this support.”

GOVERNOR BROWN SIGNS SB 1342

Senator Tony Mendoza’s Bill Prevents Wage Theft from California’s Workers Sacramento – A measure, SB 1342, authored by Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) that would protect workers by paving the way for a statewide mechanism at the local level to fight wage theft, was signed by Governor Brown July 26, 2016. The bill will go into effect on January 1, 2017. “I thank Governor Brown for signing SB 1342,” said Senator Tony Mendoza. “This bill protects hardworking Californians by clarifying the ability of cities and counties to investigate non-compliance with local wage laws.” “As cities and counties in California move to raise the minimum wage, we must ensure that our lowwage workers, who already face many challenges, receive the pay that they have earned,” added Senator
Tony Mendoza. Fifteen cities in California have passed minimum wage ordinances going beyond the State-mandated $10 an hour. In many cases however, employers do not obey these laws. For example, San Francisco City and County have passed ordinances to raise the local minimum wage to $12.25 an hour. Additionally, they have set a precedent by creating an Office of Labor Standards Enforcement to uphold these laws and address the shortfall in local wage enforcement. In Los Angeles County, which possesses a population more than 11 times larger than San Francisco County, workers are denied over $26 million a week in earned wages, but have no local investigative mechanism to assist them.

SB 1342 strengthens the law by permitting a board of supervisors of a county or the legislative body of a city to investigate wage theft. Specifically, it allows cities and counties to delegate their administrative subpoena authority to a county or city official to investigate allegations of wage theft. Currently the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DSLE) is the primary entity charged with examining wage theft cases. SB 1342 also assists in enabling counties and cities to partner with State and Federal officials in wage theft investigations. Wage theft occurs when an employer does not pay a worker all of his or her earned wages. This includes unpaid minimum wage, unpaid overtime, and offthe-clock work. Wage theft among immigrant and low-wage workers is pervasive statewide and hurtful
to workers and their families. It reduces the takehome pay of workers, contributing to food insecurity, and unstable housing, amongst other issues. Local governments across the State have raised their local minimum wage. Wage enforcement resources have not kept pace with the scale of wage theft in California. SB 1342 helps address this lack of enforcement. Senator Tony Mendoza, a Los Angeles native and former elementary school teacher in East Los Angeles, represents the 32nd Senate District encompassing portions of Los Angeles and Orange Counties. People's Caravan Fights Racism From Cleveland to Philly
People's Caravan protesters decry racism on their way to the Democratic National Convention. (Grassroots Global Justice Alliance)
Suzanne Potter California News Service
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Dozens of advocates for racial justice and peace arrived in Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention this weekend, making the trek together after protesting at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. The Global Justice Alliance organized the event, dubbing it the "It Takes Roots" People's Caravan. Mauro Barrera, an organizer for the Los Angeles-based group, Youth for Environmental Justice, said progressive advocates were mocked by conservative counter-protesters at the RNC. "Hate speech and all these sorts of negative views of people of color have been put out there already so the damage has been done," Barrera said. "That's why it's important for people to go out and do actions and protest."
Grassroots Global Justice Alliance denounced the hardening of societal attitudes following a recent string of police shootings targeting black men, which were followed by targeted killings of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge. Ronald Flannery with the Southern Maine Workers Center lent his voice to the protests.

Feds, Industry Move to Keep Drones Out of Fire Zones Suzanne Potter California News Service
Hawaii has become ground zero for testing and trials of genetically engineered crops, and environmentalists worry about the implications for ecosystems throughout the islands and beyond. Credit: Ian MacKenzie, FlickrCC.
Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EARTHTALK Most of us think of beaches, surfing and luaus when we think of Hawaii. But the constantly warm and moist climate actually provides some of the most productive land in the world with a never-ending growing season. As a result, Hawaii has become a major player in commercial agriculture, and is frequently used to test new farming techniques. Large agricultural companies moved in on this productivity by using Hawaii for trials of new genetically engineered (GE) crops. Monsanto and DOW Chemical both produce huge numbers of genetically modified seeds in Hawaii for distribution around the world. Some of Hawaii’s more common GE crops include corn, sugarcane, and papaya, among others. But not everyone appreciates how widespread GE crops are in Hawaii. Many local Hawaiians are upset that their homeland, otherwise a natural paradise, is used for such risky activities. Most GE crops are designed to resist intensive chemical pesticides that kill most other plants. Around the state, vulnerable populations including kids and the elderly have suffered the effects of this type of chemical exposure resulting from the overspraying of pesticides. These issues aren’t unique to Hawaii. People all over the world are increasingly wary of GE products, even as the chemical companies insist they are safe. However, the information on longterm effects is still inconclusive. Consumers want to know what’s in their purchases. Chemical companies are denying them this right by refusing to label those products containing genetically modified ingredients. Unfortunately, the state of Hawaii has hesitated to
enact any legislation banning some of their most lucrative business ventures. Responsibility has fallen to the counties. Three Hawaiian counties initiated ordinances and moratoriums against additional GE crops and pesticide use in 2014. However, large companies like Monsanto and Syngenta sued to prevent these measures from being implemented, temporarily postponing these bans. While they did win their initial suit in late 2014, the counties have appealed the decision through the federal 9th circuit court of appeals in a trial which started this past June. The cases hinge on the concept of preemption, i.e. does the county legislation conflict with state rulings? The counties believe that the state’s acceptance of genetically engineered products does not mean that the counties cannot implement their own harsher regulations.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - On Saturday, firefighting planes had to halt operations for half an hour on the massive, deadly Sand Fire in Santa Clarita to track down a person flying a drone in the fire zone. On Monday, the federal government announced a program to make a dent in the problem. So far this year, drones have interfered with operations on more than 15 other fires. The Department of the Interior is partnering with private companies to get fire locations mapped out and sent to DJI, the country's biggest drone manufacturer. Christie Wiley, the communications program lead for the office of Wildland Fire within the U.S. Department of the Interior explained what happens next. "They put what's called a geo-fence or a virtual boundary around that fire," she said. "And so if you have a drone that goes across that boundary, then they send an alert to their drone operators."
off. Earlier this year, the government put a new system in place where fire managers report drones to the Federal Aviation Administration, which alerts law enforcement officers, who track down the violators. By law all hobby drones must be registered with authorities. Wiley said drones are very dangerous because they can crash into a plane, and hurt even more people if either the drone or plane comes hurtling toward the ground. "They're a hazard to the aircraft flying and they're a hazard to the firefighters on the ground," she added. "The fire managers do not shoot drones down. They will just discontinue the air operations." Wiley said this new system is a prototype that will be improved and expanded by the 2017 fire season. By then, the drone manufacturers hope to be able to actually prevent drones from operating in restricted airspace once they reach a geo-fence perimeter. The system could also be used to protect places with restricted airspace like prisons and nuclear reactors.
The drone operators will get an immediate email or a text alert telling them to back
Whichever way the federal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decides will set an important precedent. If the court decides the federal law allowing GE products preempts the rights of the Hawaiian counties, any future GE bans would likely experience a similar ruling. However, the converse is also true. The judge allowing the counties to construct their own regulations regarding genetic engineering would pave the way for other counties and states to do the same. The cases will hopefully be resolved before the end of 2016. Safe to say, Hawaiians, chemical and agricultural companies and the rest of the nation will be watching.

U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. IMMIGRATION CORNER
MEET EMMA: The New Virtual Assistant for Spanish Users of the USCIS Immigration Website A view of the USCIS Immigration Website featuring Emma, The New Virtual Assistant for Spanish Users.
Raul Ray, Esq The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, (USCIS), processes applications for such immigration benefits as green cards, work permits, travel document and naturalization. As an agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, USCIS is primarily responsible for overseeing lawful immigration to the USA. USCIS customers can visit the USCIS website at <www.uscis.gov> for immigration information, forms, make an appointment to visit a local USCIS office, check application processing times and check the status of any pending application. However, navigating the website is not easy and can be overwhelming for those trying to find information on the site, especially Spanish-speaking customers. Since last December, customers have been able to turn to “Emma” for help in English when visiting the USCIS website. Emma is a virtual assistant who receives questions, provides answers and directs people to the right location on the website using the English language. She is named after Emma Lazarus, a famous poet whose words are engraved on a plaque located at the base of the Statue of Liberty. Since June of this year, Emma is now able to provide help and guidance on the USCIS website in Spanish as well. You can find Emma at the top right hand side of the USCIS website or by going to the Spanish USCIS website homepage at <www.uscis.gov/es>. Spanish customers do not need to know immigration terminology to ask Emma a question. Just select “Haga una pregunta” in the upper-right corner of the screen and type a question in your own words. I wanted to know just how accurate Emma really is so I tested her by asking such questions in Spanish as “How to do I apply for a green
card? ”and “ How do I apply for citizenship?” I was very impressed with Emma. She was able to provide me with pretty good answers to my questions, and directed me to USCIS web pages in Spanish as well as English that contained more information that were related to my questions. Overall moving forward, I believe Emma will be a very useful virtual assistant tool that will aid Spanish customers to find accurate immigration information quicker and easier by asking their questions in Spanish. According to USCIS, at the present time, its call centers currently receive many general information requests that can be responded to with information directly from the web. And who would be the source providing that immigration online? It would be “Emma” of course. Also according to USCIS, even though the Spanish-language version of Emma is new, she can already answer over 80 percent of questions posed to her by Spanish customers. And with time and experience, Emma will only serve to become more smarter and proficient in terms of assisting future customers who visit the government website. Remember contact ONLY a qualified immigration lawyer or an accredited representative for legal advice or immigration relief concerning your case. We will continue to keep you apprised on the very latest immigration news around the country. APPLE CARPLAY, ANDROID AUTO: SANITY CHECK
Shelly Palmer Apple CarPlay lets your car display a familiar, iOS-like interface. So too with Android Auto and its Google Now-ish display. But your new car has a built-in set of similar features that are ergonomically and technologically integrated. Should you plug your smartphone into the Apple CarPlay or Android Auto USB port and connect it to your car’s infotainment system, or just car-mount your smartphone, plug it into a charger and use it separately?
My iPhone 6s has every entertainment and navigation feature mentioned above and much, much more. When combined with Apple CarPlay, which you get to by plugging your iPhone into the CarPlay-enabled USB port, it is more than competitive with the car’s built-in navigation and entertainment tools. And, most important, it will be continuously improved over the life of my car. The car’s internal system is what it is; it’s built-in and is unlikely to improve.
have to put my iPhone on a car-mount to see the map and visual reference cues, enter or confirm hazards and use other functions. Did the car manufacturer give me a convenient place to mount my smartphone? Of course not. Do I want to stick my iPhone into the air vent and block the air conditioning, or do I want to stick it to my windshield and block my view? Neither option makes any sense. Yep, I’m Still Insane
I recently picked up my new car, which features a very hightech, dual-screen multimedia interface. I was forced to purchase the top-of-the-line “navigation system” in order to get the factory-installed sound system I wanted. (I’ll save my comments about that bitter pill for another column.) So, against my will, I am now the proud driver of a 2017 automobile with every bell and whistle the automaker sells. Aside from some incredible semiautonomous driving features, the car has a natural language processing interface that lets you control a long list of features. It has a pretty impressive navigation system integrated with Google Earth that offers real-time traffic and weather and has full search, points of interest, a gas station finder, a national monument locater, and a way to store favorite destinations. It has a Bluetooth phone interface with visibility into your contacts, favorites, media, and more. It also has a multimedia entertainment/Internet package that includes Sirius XM, AM/FM radio, SD card readers, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, aux inputs, an AT&T 6GB/month LTE data package, and two USB ports: one that just charges your device and one for Apple CarPlay. It also has a dedicated app (although it is not very good) that can unlock the car, find the car, geofence the car, alert you if the car goes over the speed limit, and enable you to send navigation information to the car. Sounds Great, Right? It sounds great because it is great. It’s the best and latest version of everything this particular automaker knows how to include in the vehicle. But …
Apple CarPlay does not put your iPhone interface up on the car’s display screen. It puts familiar iOS icons on the display in a manner that gives you easy access to Apple maps, messages, music and your iPhone. The phone integration is exceptional. Your favorites, contacts, recent calls and voicemail are just a knob twist away. And while CarPlay integrates only a few entertainment apps – Spotify, iHeartRadio, NPR, At Bat, a podcast player and some others – its future is clear. You are only a software update (iOS 10) away from “a little piece of heaven.” CarPlay gives you access to Siri and has a very nice speech-to-text system for safe messaging while driving. If I plugged my Samsung Galaxy s7 into an Android Auto– compatible car, I would have access to similar features, plus Google Now and Google Maps. If you’re an Android person, it’s as useful as CarPlay – actually more useful when you consider the quality of both Google Now and Google Maps. Wait until Google adds Waze to Android Auto – you will shop for a car based on its Googleyness. Sanity Check Which brings me to a harsh, cold, horrible, unfortunate, evil reality. Even with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, I still need to car-mount my smartphone. Back to Apple CarPlay: like many people who need to get from place to place, I am not fond of Apple Maps. I love Google Maps and I truly love Waze. I use Waze every time I get in any car (not just my own). If my iPhone is plugged into CarPlay, I can use Waze, but I can’t see it through the car’s infotainment display; I
I need to car-mount my iPhone to use Waze and other nonCarPlay-compatible, non-built-in apps. So if I still need to car-mount my iPhone, do I really need to plug it into the CarPlay port? Why not just connect the phone via Bluetooth (to access the car’s built-in speaker phone, assuming that the iPhone’s speaker phone option isn’t loud enough) or WiFi (for audio) and use my apps on the phone? Perhaps, in the not-too-distant future, Google, Apple and the auto manufacturers will get this worked out. Until then, I’ll be driving around with an air vent iPhone mount and a cable running down the dashboard, tucked under the floor mat, up the center console and into one of the USB ports. Which one? I’ll keep plugging it into the one I always plug it into and hope for a different result – as you know, that’s the definition of insanity.
