YOUR MIND CAN BE MADE MAGNIFICENT WITH YOUR GUIDANCE relationships.
Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR Summer is almost over. My teacher-friends are now preoccupied with getting their classrooms ready for the coming academic year. Invariably, each of them will spend some of their own money to get needed supplies; El Observador Foundation, Inc. is providing the funds to purchase five tablets which can be loaned to impoverished students who need to learn keyboarding (essential to data entry & search activities) plus how to use the internet (google for information; prepare and submit school projects). Without these basic skills, these students will have a serious disadvantage when first attending their middle school classes. It is the job of each and every student to learn to develop their own unique mind by envisioning their future SELF-IMAGE. “The mind is defined in a human as the element or process that reasons, thinks, feels, wills, perceives, judges, integrates information received through one's five senses (vision, touch, smell, taste, and hearing). Teacher's responsibility is presenting information needed to become proficient in reading, writing, math, and course content. It is the mind which is the recipient of behavioral standards, social practices, and economic issues...all of which require knowing how to communicate; develop sustainable
One's brain is defined as the part of the central nervous system which is enclosed in the cranium (head) of humans and other vertebrates. It consists of a soft convoluted mass of grey and white matter and serves to control and coordinate one's mental and physical actions. There is a great need for everyone to understand that Doing drugs to feel good is really accomplished by abusing brain tissues sensitive to the stimulant or depressant used. Recently it was established that marijuana's tetrahydrocannabinol stops brain cell development in youthful brains up to age 26. Alcohol, opiates, crack, opium, methamphetamines, nicotine, etc. all damage or even destroy brain cells. So, it is prudent not to use any substance excessively. Human physiology has several ways to maintain homeostasis (which is the environment in which your body's cells, especially brain cells, function well. Health and wellness result from learning how to take care of your unique body and its brain'. Recently Steven Campbell, psychologist, made a very timely and informative talk at the weekly meeting of San Jose Rotary Club. At Portland University, Campbell has gathered comprehensive information about the human brain by neuro-scientific researchers using two new high-tech approaches: Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET). These technologies coupled with
advances in biochemistry, especially enzymology, have resulted in many insights concerning the mind & brain; how one learns; forms self-images; and develops self-esteem. No one really knows how the mind & brain works. However, it is the one organ which works all the time even when one is asleep. The brain uses about 20% of all energy your body produces. It may be damaged by concussions from violent blows or by abusive substances such as drugs. And much more needs to be learned about how the human brain operates. Back in 1969, the International Society of Neuroscientists had 400 registered members; in 2006, its membership amounted to 37,000 (and growing). A top memory neuroscientist', Professor Jeri Janowski, (U. of Portland), says, “Anything you learned (about the human brain) two years ago is already old information...Neurosciences are exploding (today)!” “Why teach (learn) how your brain works? Because if you understand your brain, you (and others) can guide it. So if not guided, your brain ends up doing most of the shaping. And then you end up feeling like a victim or passenger in life, instead of the (guide and) driver of your own distinctive (unique) existence and (its) untapped potential.” Each of us needs to become engaged in our personal life-long learning habits to enable being continuously informed as we
travel our life's journey. Some of us, under age 18, are required to attend school. It is these individuals who need to know that their brain resists changes. One must understand that we each have a body-mind-spirit which can be molded by our own efforts. Learning new concepts, paradigms, and algorithms requires a slightly uncomfortable work effort. If you are always living in your personal comfort zone', then you are probably not challenging your brain to develop for future success as your friendly mentor. Becoming educated involves the challenges of changes which invariably cause one to experience anxiety and discomfort especially if one is ambitious and makes the effort to change by becoming informed. Your human mind and brain are very pliable and adaptable. As you learn your brain changes. Brains prefer to learn in small amounts of information. Learning bit by bit makes it a cinch to learning any discipline. Begin by learning that discipline's vocabulary and measurements systems. For those returning to their classes this August 2017, the challenge is to tell your mind who you want to become and why. Girls need to say to their minds: “I want to be good with math, engineering, technology, and sciences” ...so that your brain begins to figure out how you may accomplish proficiency in these areas of knowledge which society has told girls you cannot do METS. Note that I have reversed STEM. WHY? Simple: Math
proficiency is required to become accomplished in engineering, technology and sciences...even the Arts & Humanities. Facility with math requires practice and use if one is to understand metrics', processes, and equilibriums. Begin by defining your own SELF-IMAGE. If your mind tells your brain, I want to be a very good student, then your mind accepts that statement without challenging it; Your mind says to itself, OK? Let us work that out even while you sleep. Make the effort to acquire facts and information, then your mind does what it must with the result that your potential becomes developed. You, the student, must make the effort to guide your mind and brain. As you learn, you will begin to see more options. It is this process which enables anyone to learn what is enjoyable and provides personal satisfaction. A high SELF ESTEEM is based upon the self-image chosen. YOUR MIND CAN BE MADE MAGNIFICENT WITH YOUR GUIDANCE...Campbell's book tells you how to do that based on the latest neuroscientific research findings which he has effectively summarized. Your self-image choices will make your personal education process very exciting and self-fulfilling'.

Santa Clara, Calif.—Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) and Mission College announced on Wednesday August 2nd that they are launching a new bachelor’s degree program in Business Administration on the campus of Mission College, a community college in Santa Clara, California. “NDNU’s new bachelor’s in Business Administration at Mission College has several key advantages,” said Dr. Therese M. Madden, program director for professional studies at NDNU. “One of the best things about this program is the students, who are excited, interested, and interesting. Another great feature is the faculty, who work in the business world during the day and then bring their expertise to the students at night. The classes are offered in the evening in an accelerated format, ideal for working adults.” “This is a wonderful opportunity for students interested in our combined program,” said Mission College Vice President of Instruction Leandra Martin. “They can now study where they live, it’s highly affordable, and it’s a direct and guided pathway to an NDNU degree. It's a win-win for everyone.” Mission College starts its Fall Semester on August 26. The cost of the program totals less than a California State University degree, since students pay only community college tuition their first two years. Located in Santa Clara, the program offers a convenient location in the heart of Silicon Valley. The bachelor’s in Business Administration
is NDNU’s second undergraduate degree program at Mission College. Since 2008, NDNU has offered a popular bachelor’s in Human Services at that community college. With the addition of the bachelor’s in Business Administration at Mission College, NDNU now offers undergraduate business degrees in four Northern California locations, including the main campus in Belmont, Cañada College in Redwood City, and the satellite campus in Tracy. About NDNU Notre Dame de Namur University is a Catholic, not-for-profit, coeducational institution serving approximately 1,700 traditional-aged and adult students from diverse backgrounds. Established in 1851 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, NDNU maintains a strong commitment to access for diverse populations, academic excellence, social justice and community engagement. The university is fully accredited and offers a rich variety of undergraduate, graduate and credential programs. The historic, 48-acre campus is located on the San Francisco Peninsula in Silicon Valley. www.ndnu.edu. About Mission College Santa Clara’s community college since 1975, Mission College offers degrees and certificates to a wide variety of students— recent high school graduates, those returning to the workforce looking for new skills, and even a 70-year old firsttime student. Recent graduates have been accepted to four-year universities such as NDNU, UC Berkeley, and San Jose State, and have also earned career-training degrees that have given them a leg up in the job market. missioncollege.edu

your beach bag to last throughout the day. Keeping a case of water in your car is another way to ensure you'll always have water on hand.
Many of us spend our summer soaking up the sun. Kids are out of school, outdoor sports are plenty, and people are enjoying warm weather activities. However, spending a lot of time outside in the elements puts you at risk for dehydration-related concerns. While most people know that water is critical for your health, what you may not know is that water makes up about 55 to 65 percent of your body. Many may be surprised to know that losing only four percent of your body weight -roughly the equivalent of riding a bike for three hours in extreme heat without rehydrating -- may cause you to faint. The following simple tips from Dr. Ralph Holsworth, a board-certified family medicine physician and head of clinical and scientific research for Essentia Water, will help you stay well hydrated this summer: * Sip with purpose; don't chug. -- When you drink too much water at once, it passes through your system too quickly, failing to go to the kidneys. This can lead to dehydration despite the amount of water you may be drinking. Drinking
* Limit sun exposure. -- Not shielding yourself properly in the sun causes you to sweat more, which can lead to quicker dehydration. Wearing cotton clothes that are breathable in the heat and a hat that covers your ears will help protect you from potentially dangerous health issues such as heat exhaustion.

too much water can also cause cramping, as well as bloating and stomach pains, due to loss of electrolytes. Aim to take a sip of water every 15-20 minutes when you're playing sports or when it's hot outside and you should be right on track. * Aim to drink 3 liters a day. -- The ageold 8-glasses-a-day rule doesn't always suffice in the hot summer months.

FIRST WEST NILE VIRUS POSITIVE DEAD BIRD DETECTED IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY West Nile Virus Season is Off to a Late Start
PRESENTED BY METRO
FRIDAY, AUGUST 25

SA N TA CL A R A COU N T Y, CA LIF. – The Santa Clara County Vector Control District (SCC VCD) has conf irmed that one A merican crow has tested positive for West Nile Virus (W N V) in the South Bay. The bird was found on August 3rd in the city of Santa Clara (ZIP code 95051). This is the year’s f irst detection of W N V activ ity in the county. This low level of W N V activ ity was also obser ved at the state level: so far this year, 115 dead birds were conf irmed positive to W N V in California, compared to 7 18 at the same point last year. “This year, we are hav ing a calm W N V season,” said District Manager Nayer Zahiri. “However, a late star t can be followed by a spike of W N V activ ity. Residents should keep repor ting dead birds and mosquito breeding sources, and taking measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites.” Dead birds of cer tain species, such as crows and ravens, are ver y v ulnerable to W N V infection, and act as an early warning system. A bird that tests positive for W N V aler ts health of f icials that the v irus is present in an area. Once a positive dead bird is detected, SCC VCD raises its sur veillance ef for ts to conf irm if mosquitoes in the same area are infected w ith the v irus. In response to this discover y, the District w ill collect adult mosquitos for W N V testing by deploy ing
mosquito traps in the neighborhoods where the dead bird was found. The results of this mosquito testing w ill be available early next week. The District continues to control mosquitoes in their immature stages through an integrated pest management (IPM) program. The District’s vector control technicians routinely inspect standing water where mosquitoes develop, and treat mosquito breeding sources throughout the county. Transmitted by mosquito bites, W N V causes mild to severe f lu-like sy mptoms such as fever, headache, body ache, and, in severe cases, signif icant neurological sy mptoms or even death. The elderly and those w ith compromised immune systems are most susceptible. In 2016, California repor ted 442 human W N V cases, w ith 19 fatalities. No human cases or W N V positive mosquitoes have been found in Santa Clara County this year. The SCC VCD asks residents to repor t fresh carcasses of birds to the California West Nile Virus Hotline at westnile.ca.gov or by phone at 877-W N V-BIRD (877-968-2473). For more information about mosquito prevention and free assistance on mosquito control, residents can contact the District´s of f ice by calling (408) 918-4770, f ill out a ser v ice request online at SCCvector.org/ ser v ice or use the SCCvector app, dow nloadable at SCCvector.org/app.

Entonces

MINORITY POPULATIONS DRIVE GROWTH IN RURAL CALIFORNIA Ayuda a Amazon prepararse para el mañana Now hiring part-time associates for overnight shift in South San Francisco
More than half of California is made up of almost 40 percent Latino residents, making it a majority-minority state. Photo Credit: Pixabay
Suzanne Potter California News Service
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- All but one rural county in California has added population over the past quarter century - and a new report shows that minorities are a big part of that boom. Analysts from nonpartisan research firm Headwaters Economics looked at census data from 1980 to 2015 across the West and found that 99 percent of counties saw an increase in Hispanics, other people of color and foreignborn residents. Kelly Pohl, researcher and policy analyst and a co-author of the report, said Sierra County, north of Lake Tahoe, lost 2 percent of its total population - but an influx of minority residents has been a stabilizing force. "In places where overall population is decreasing, minorities are slowing that trend of shrinking communities, and helping to sustain local economies and keep school districts open," Pohl said.
As of 2014, Hispanics became the largest ethnic group in the Golden State, which now has the sixth-largest economy in the world. All but one of California's rural counties are growing, many due to an increase in outdoor recreation and tourism. Calaveras County's total population is up 116 percent, with many newcomers working at the dozens of newly legal marijuana growing operations that have popped up in recent years. Pohl said that minority families are particularly beneficial to towns with an aging general population. "Because minority populations tend to be younger on average than non-Hispanic white populations, they inject youth and cultural diversity and economic vitality into places, some of which would otherwise be shrinking," she said. California is home to more than 15 million Latinos, but the state has always had a significant Hispanic and Native American population.

COUNTY GEARING UP FOR PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE ON AUGUST 21

Even though Santa Clara County won’t be in the path of a total solar eclipse from 9:02 to 11:54 a.m. on Monday, August 21, we will get to view a partial eclipse, with about 75 percent of the sun being covered. This is a rare and exciting event that you won’t want to miss. But please make sure you have the proper glasses. Looking directly at the sun will injure your eyes. If you’re looking through a telescope or camera, you will need a special filter. The Space Science Institute is distributing more than 2 million pairs of eclipse glasses through libraries across the U.S., including County Libraries and City of San Jose Libraries. Contact your local library for information about when and where the glasses will be available. There will be many areas for viewing in Santa Clara County, including San Jose’s Hogue Park. The San Jose Astronomical Association is hosting a free viewing event from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, August 21, at Hogue Park in West San Jose. Visit www.sjaa.net/events/solareclipse-2017 for more information and to RSVP. Several local libraries are also providing special presentations and watching parties: • Dr. Andrew Fraknoi, astronomy professor at Foothill College, will lead a discussion from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 12, at the Milpitas Library, 160 North Main Street, Milpitas. The library will also host a viewing event on the fourth f loor of the parking garage, starting at 9 a.m. • SJA A will also conduct a solar eclipse viewing workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 12, at the Bascom
Branch Library, 1000 Bascom Avenue, San Jose. • Santa Clara University, 500 El Camino Real, is hosting a watching party on campus from 9 to 11 a.m. at Vari Hall Lawn. Visit www.scu.edu for more details and to register.

• Cupertino Library will show the NASA Total Eclipse life feed at 10 a.m. to noon in the Story Room Ground Floor. And here’s something you might not have thought about. In California, the eclipse will reduce solar energy supplies that help power the grid for more than two hours while the moon blocks the sun. The California Public Utilities Commission is asking all of us to conserve energy during the time the eclipse is expected to occur in California, 9:02 to 11:54 a.m. Sunlight is one of our greatest sources of clean energy, and having less of it means we rely more on other more expensive and less efficient sources like natural gas. Over the past few year, the County has been reducing power usage at its facilities through lighting retrofits and recommissioning its heating and cooling systems. Nonetheless, we will work with our departments and our employees to temporarily reduce energy usage even more at our County buildings like the County Government Center through lowering lights where possible, turning up the thermostat 2 to 5 degrees, not charging electronics, and not using appliances. You can do the same at home. You can replace lightbulbs with LEDs, turn off lights, not charge electronics, unplug appliances not in use and, if you have air conditioning, turn up your thermostat. The CPUC would like you to take an online pledge to “give the sun a break” at ia.cpuc.ca.gov/caleclipse.

SUN, FUN, A ND FA IRY TA LES
My adventures in Southern California driving the newest iteration of the GMC Yukon XL Denali on the two flip down screens, which also allows for Blu-ray watching (our only Blu-ray for the trip, The Fifth Element, was greatly enjoyed), using the wireless headphones that are included. This let me go back to my mix of music and mostly podcasts for the trip while they watched their movie uninterrupted. As we cruised along, the smooth ride of the Yukon XL Denali and its outside noise reduction allowed everyone to enjoy the ride, at times making me forget I was commandeering a 7,500 lbs. SUV with 5 adults in it. On day one of our trip we went to the Orange County Fair, where we actually took ride shares instead of taking the Denali, as we would be partaking in happy hour at the fair. This included fried Snickers and micheladas. We also spent way too much to win some stuffed animals, but the glory was in being victorious I tell myself. The following day was an early trip to Disneyland where we were able to squeeze in 12 rides across the two theme parks, which equaled a lot of walking. At the end of the day, it was great getting to the “Woody” parking lot section and getting into the Denali, setting up the GPS to get on our way, and playing some tunes. The front seats have a heat and vent option and in the warm weather that night, the cool venting in the seat was remarkable. The following day we headed out of Newport Beach to get back to the Bay Area, but not before trying some vegan food and dipping our toes into the
ocean. All in all, it was a fun trip that was helped along by the vehicle that got us there. One aspect of driving during this trip that offered comfort and ease of use was the blind spot detection, officially referred to as the “side blind zone alert with lane change alert”. A small but bright light on the corners of either side mirror light up when there is a car in the lane next to you. Most times this was good just to be aware as I could see the cars approaching, but there were some points where there seemed to be no car in the lane but the alert would go off and what do you know, a car was hidden in my blind spot. This makes lane changing a breeze with this tool and beats the stress I mentioned earlier with the experience of driving the Suburban. This worked wonders on a nighttime highway or during the day in a busy downtown beach area. To finalize this review, the GMC Yukon XL Denali delivers in many ways. Not just for gliding down the I-5 to Los Angeles, but also for driving to get groceries, making use of back seats that can be power folded to add even more space. The automatic running boards that pop out from under the truck to help get into the vehicle make the largeness of the Denali less pronounced. And the long list of features and tools allow for an efficient ride, but one that will make you want to take more long drives in it. Bottom line: this truck delivers where it matters-- it’s comfortable, tech savvy, and road trip approved. Would drive again.

I will admit, the last time I drove a proper SUV was a couple years back when I was using a 1999 Suburban to get around town. My biggest peeve with that truck was the difficulty that arose with blind spots and it being a large car in a tight city world. Trying out the 2018 GMC Yukon XL Denali though, is a different story. I went on a road trip to Southern California recently to once again try my luck at driving the gallant, majestic SUV. In this case, I was outfitted with the latest GMC Denali, which would transport my girlfriend, my brother and a couple friends to the happiest place on earth, Disneyland, as well as to a good friend’s home in Newport Beach. To start off, when first seeing the Denali up close, it is a nice sight. It’s clean shape and trim are the first things I noticed, immediately followed by the big, shiny grill. GMC’s Global Exterior Design director Matt Noone says, “The new grill, which is flanked by HID headlamps and LED Signature Lighting, advances the design legacy established with the very first Yukon Denali in 1999.” The grill is definitely the statement piece on the front of the vehicle, accompanied by the very useful HID lights. I had the Onyx Black colorway, which just looks plain cool. Our trip took us to SoCal at night, and the lighting both in and out of the vehicle is superb. The headlights allow for a great view of the road ahead and to the sides, making it a much easier

navigation process. Even inside, the lighting allows passengers to help with navigation, or find a charging cable to plug into the many outlets available and complementing the driver by never being intrusive. The heads-up display (HUD) was my favorite functionality of the Denali’s tech features, of which there are a lot of to be found! The HUD projects valuable, customizable information above the dash and onto the windshield of the driver side. On my version of it, I had the current speed as the main graphic, as well as the currently playing Bluetooth media towards the bottom of the display. The driver’s dash display was also customizable, showing me things like driving range on current gas tank contents, live mileage figures, and the ability to add different skins and visual configurations to the display, as well as connected media information.

Speaking of media, I tend to gravitate towards listening to hour long podcasts when I’m driving for long lengths of time, but in this case my passengers also wanted some form of entertainment that wasn’t talking heads. Enter the Yukon XL Denali’s rear seat entertainment, and all the options that came with that. Through the main 8” navigation/infotainment screen in the front console, we were able to set up a Google Chromecast through the included HDMIin port and through the power of the 4G Wi-Fi hotspot connection in the truck. This allowed everyone to use their phones to cast various Netflix choices or YouTube videos through the connected Chromecast. The 3 passengers in the back of the truck watched
