Hilbert Morales El Observador On Tuesday, August 23, 2016, Silicon Valley Leadership Group, Carl Guardino, CEO was M.C. to a gathering which honored Senator Dianne Feinstein for her many years of public service. Also present were U.S. House of Representatives members Zoe Lofgren, Anna Eshoo, and Mike Honda...all of whom are on the November 8 ballot 'up for re-election' (as Democrats). The program was really focused upon Senator Feinstein's public service career. Feinstein is the Senior Senator from CA first elected in 1992. She served as San Francisco's 38th Mayor (1978 to 1988). Born in San Francisco, Feinstein graduated from Stanford University in 1955 with a B.A. in history. In the 1960s she worked in city government; in 1970 she was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. She served as the board's first female president in 1978, during which time the assassinations of Mayor George

Fireside Chat with CA Senator Dianne Feinstein Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk (first openly gay elected official) drew national attention. Feinstein succeeded Moscone as mayor. During her tenure as SF's first female mayor she led a revamp of the city's cable car system and oversaw the 1984 Democratic National Convention. After a failed gubernatorial campaign in 1990, she won a 1992 special election to the U.S. Senate. Feinstein was first elected on the same ballot as her peer Barbara Boxer; both became California's first female U.S. Senators. Feinstein has been re-elected four times since then and in the 2012 election, she claimed the record for the most popular votes in any U.S. Senate election in history, having received 7.75 million votes.[2] Feinstein was the author of the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban which expired in 2004. In 2013 she introduced a new assault weapons bill, which failed to pass. Feinstein formerly chaired the Senate Rules Committee (2007–09) and chaired the Select Committee on Intelligence (2009-2015). when the Democrats lost control of the Senate. She is the only woman to have presided over a U.S. presidential inauguration.

At the age of 83, Feinstein is the oldest currently serving U.S. Senator. (Source: Wikipedia) To break the Republican Party gridlock on federal legislation, it is essential that the Democratic Party end up with a majority in both the House and Senate. The next U.S. President will appoint perhaps three U.S. Supreme Court 'Associate Justices' (one, nominated by President Obama, has not been brought up for an up or down vote by the current Republican Senate majority leader). So it is essential that all possible registered voters actually vote this coming Presidential Election Day, November 8, 2016. EO recommends voting for Democrats Feinstein, Eshoo, Lofgren and Honda. To replace Senator Barbara Boxer, EO recommends election of Loretta Sanchez (D-District 37) as the first Latina U.S. Senator from CA (because of her 20 years of legislative service in the U.S. House of Representatives). The Latino vote for election of all these Democrats is very important if the current Republican gridlock is to be broken enabling the passage of much legislation and appointment of U.S. Supreme Court Justices. The 2016 Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG) asks

SCVWD had sponsored 3 tables (30 guests). Theresa Krakov quickly determined that I could take an 'empty seat'. It was my delight to sit with Ms. Elise Latedsou, an 'ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNER' to my left. To my right sat Ms. Marie Garcia, Professional Engineer (P.E.) who impressed me with her enthusiasm concerning her ideas & work which involved plastic piping and fluid dynamics (a physic's science specialty). These two ethnic women made my day...especially when M.C. Carl Guardino, just before adjourning this event, asked that all women who were professionals and small business entrepreneurs come up to the stage for a group photo with the Congressional delegation. A current SVLG program encourages women to enter STEM professions and be entrepreneurs. For 90 minutes or so, I had enjoyed my conversations with two ethnic women who were competent & experienced professionals.

Existe una larga y digna tradición de profesionistas que ponen su experiencia y tiempo, no sólo al servicio de la sociedad, sino especialmente de los más vulnerables. Un número importante de abogados ofrece regularmente consultas “pro bono”, es decir, gratuitas, a aquellas personas que requieren de asesoría legal y que carecen de los recursos económicos para retener a un profesional de las leyes. La medicina es otra de las profesiones que por décadas ha contado con miles de doctores que viajan a los países más pobres, en guerra o en medio de conflictos civiles, para extender su mano desinteresada y evitar catástrofes de salud y humanitarias. De especial mención es el trabajo internacional de organizaciones como Médicos Sin Fronteras, fundada en Francia en 1971.

En los Estados Unidos existe la organización sin fines de lucro “Cirugía Sin Fronteras”, un programa médico nacido en California y fundado por el doctor Jorge Henríquez, que provee cirugías a bajo costo a personas de bajos ingresos que no cuentan con la cobertura de un seguro médico, sin importar su estatus migratorio.

El costo de una cirugía de hernia, que puede ascender regularmente a un precio superior a los 20,000 dólares, se reduce a unos 3,500 dólares a 4,000 dólares a través de CSF. Una joven hispana pagó por ejemplo 3,000 dólares para la extirpación de un tumor de matriz que habría costado normalmente unos 30,000 dólares. Pero incluso el costo reducido puede ser prohibitivo para muchas personas, por ejemplo, los trabajadores del campo en California, por lo que este año fue fundada la Fundación Cirugía sin

SAN DIEGO - Supporters of Proposition 55 gathered at San Diego City College on August 24th, to make the case for the November ballot initiative that would extend a tax on the wealthy to fund education.

Opponents have argued that high-income earners will flee the state if Prop 30's taxes are extended, but statistics show that California has seen an increase in its numbers of millionaire and billionaire residents since Prop 30 passed.

Prop 55 is a replacement for Proposition 30, parts of which expire in 2017. Prop 55 would cut the sales tax by 0.25 percent but keep the higher taxes on the wealthy that now provide about $7 billion a year for public education. Kelly Mayhew, a professor of English, humanities and gender studies at the college, called it a "must-pass" initiative.

Mayhew added that before Prop 30, class sizes in kindergarten through 12th grade went up dramatically and programs that had once been considered vital had to be cut. She said schools now have reversed some of the cuts from eight years ago, restoring school counselors and extracurricular activities, and she wants to see that progress continue.

"Before we passed Prop 30, we were going through terribly draconian budget cuts, which meant closing classes, fees were going up," she said. "And so, I can't imagine going back to before, when students in our schools

"I'm involved in Prop 55 because that will at least stabilize the funding at the current levels without raising any extra taxes, but keeping the taxes on the top earners for the next 12 years," she said.

SAN DIEGO - Los profesores de California se manifiestaron el miercoles 24 de agosto en San Diego para hacer publico su apoyo a la Proposicion 55, la iniciativa de votacion que mantendria vigente un impuesto a los mas ricos para fondear la educacion.

Los detractores argumentan que quienes ganan ingresos altos se saldran del estado si los impuestos de la Propuesta 30 se mantienen. Pero las estadisticas muestran que California ha visto un incremento de residentes millonarios y billonarios desde que fue aprobada la Propuesta 30.

La Propuesta 55 ("Prop 55") reduciria los impuestos a las ventas en un cuarto de punto, pero mantendria sin cambio los impuestos mas altos a la gente afluente, que actualmente aporta unos siete billones de dolares al ano para educacion publica. La Dra. Kelly Mayhew, profesora de ingles, humanidades y estudios de genero en San Diego City College, la considera una "iniciativa que debe pasar". "Antes de que aprobaramos la Propuesta 30 pasamos por terribles recortes de presupuesto, lo que significo cerrar clases, las matriculas subian. Asi que no puedo imaginar regresar

NO JUSTICE IN DEFENDING YOURSELF IN U.S. IMMIGRATION COURT The biggest challenge for immigrants facing deportation is convincing an immigration judge to let them stay in the USA. Without the representation of an experience deportation defense attorney, immigrants face an uphill battle in winning their case. According to a new study by the California Coalition for Universal Representation, immigrants detained in California who have an attorney succeed in their cases more than five times as often as those who don’t. However, only 37 percent of all immigrants and 14 percent of detained immigrants have legal representation in immigration court, according to another study U Penn Law Review Study. There’s currently a backlog of more than half a million pending cases in U.S. immigration courts throughout the country. It’s not uncommon to appear in immigration court on any given day and see a packed courtroom of men, women and children appearing without an attorney. The Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees the rights of criminal defendants, including the right to a public trial without unnecessary delay, the right to a lawyer, the right to an impartial jury, and the right to know who your accusers are and the nature of the charges and evidence against you. Indigent Immigrants despite being at risk for harm or even death by drug cartels and gang members if they are deported back to their country are not entitled to court-appointed attorneys. Many immigrants are deported from the USA simply because they ended up representing themselves in deportation proceedings and had no idea how to competently prepare a case in defense of their removal from the USA. Getting legal representation is vital to immigrants in deportation cases because a skilled and experienced deportation defense attorneys can help secure the release of detained immigrants by bond, challenge the reasons why the government is trying to remove a person from the USA, identify and prepare any applications for relief that may help an immigrant win their case and remain in the USA, gather supporting documents, prepare immigrants and their witnesses to testify at court and the list goes on and on. So are there any solutions to this dire situation? With nonprofit agencies having a hard time keeping up with the demands of indigent immigrants desperately seeking legal representation, some local and state governments across the country have step in to help out. For example, in 2014, the City of San Francisco funded the San Francisco Immigrant Legal Defense Collaborative (SFILDC), which consists of 13 legal service providers partnering to provide representation at the San Francisco Immigration Court to unaccompanied children and families f leeing violence in Mexico and the

Central American countries of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. The program has been extraordinarily successful according to Avantika Shastri, the SFILDC Legal Director. First and foremost, ask the immigration judge for more time to look for and retain an immigration attorney. Immigrants in deportation proceedings need to take this task very seriously. Immigration judges will generally have no problem with affording immigrants extensive time to look for an attorney to represent them. What they will have a problem with eventually is people continuing to come back to court asking for more time over and over again to look for an attorney when it doesn’t appear that they are sincerely trying to do so. This will no doubt annoy the immigration judge who may feel that a person is just trying to delay their case from moving forward. The judge at that point may decide to move the case along and have the immigrant represent themselves. MI PUEBLO AYUDA A LA COMUNIDAD CON UTILES ESCOLARES San Jose, CA Como parte de las iniciativas y el compromiso de Mi Pueblo con la comunidad local y la educación, Mi Pueblo trabajó en conjunto con La Diócesis de San José, Maseca y Bimbo para donar mochilas y útiles escolares para el regreso a clases a miembros de la comunidad y los hijos de empleados de Mi Pueblo. Environmental Track Record: Vice Presidential choices Tim Kaine and Mike Pence

The two Vice Presidential candidates (Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican Mike Pence) could hardly be father apart on their respective stances on conservation, environment, energy and what to do about climate change. Credit: Joel Rivlin, Gage Skidmore.

Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EarthTalk Not surprisingly given the current political climate, the respective Vice Presidential candidates differ on most of the issues, including their policies on the environment and energy. On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton’s VP choice Tim Kaine has opposed big oil companies since his career as Virginia State Senator. He first endorsed a “25% renewables

by 2025” goal back in 2007, and has continued his staunch support ever since. He has been a champion of diversifying America’s energy portfolio. “We’re not going to drill our way out of the long-term energy crisis facing this nation and the world... we can’t keep relying oil,” said Kaine back in 2008. He reinforced this position again in his 2012 Senate race by arguing against tax subsidies for major oil companies. As far as environmental protection, he has not shown much of a track record in

support or against. In May of 2013, he did vote affirmatively on a bill to protect ocean, coastal and Great Lakes ecosystems. The League of Conservation Voters (LCV), which puts out an annual national environmental scorecard for politicians, has attributed a 91 percent lifetime score to Kaine, clearly naming him as one of our nation’s leading politicians. More recently, in late 2015, Kaine voted against a bill that attacked Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) carbon pollution limits. Of course, a Republican dominated Congress passed the bill anyway, although President Obama quickly vetoed it to maintain stricter limits on carbon pollution. cross the aisle, Donald Trump’s VP selection, A Mike Pence, lacks any sort of environmental agenda in his political career. The LCV gives him a lifetime score of only four percent, meaning he is no friend of the environment. Pence, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001-2013 when he assumed the Indiana governorship, voted against a “Cash for Clunkers” recycling program in 2009 and also voted no on a bill improving public transportation in 2008. Meanwhile, he voted affirmatively for deauthorizing critical habitat zones and approving forest thinning projects in 2005 and 2003, respectively. As for energy policy, Pence supported the “25% renewable energy...” goal in 2007 like his opponent Kaine. However, since then, he has supported offshore drilling, opposed EPA

AUGUST 26-SEPTEMBER 1, 2016 regulation of greenhouse gases and voted without any environmental conscience. He also voted against incentives for alternative fuels, for the construction of new oil refineries, and against criminalizing oil cartels such as OPEC. “I think the science is very mixed on the subject of global warming,” Pence stated in 2009. His record of the environment since then reflects his continued skepticism toward environmental protection efforts. For environmentalists, Kaine is the obvious choice over Pence, which is no surprise given the Presidential candidates who selected each of them as running mates. While Hillary Clinton may have focused more attention on other political issues over her career, she has continuously supported environmental protection and the transition away from fossil fuels, while Donald Trump has fought environmental restrictions on his ability to operate his real estate empire and recently told reporters he would consider reneging on U.S. commitments to reduce greenhouse gases made at the recent Paris climate summit. State Test Scores Indicate District-Wide Academic Improvements SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Franklin-McKinley School District’s California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results were released August 24th by the California Department of Education and indicate gains District-wide. FranklinMcKinley School District students took the Smarter Balanced Assessment in English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and Math for the second year. Last administered in the spring, the computer-based assessment focuses on Common Core State Standards, offering a new level of rigor, completely different from the previous California State Standards. TITANFALL 2 TECH TEST LET'S YOU TRY OUT THE NEW BOTS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Eduardo Hilario El Observador With the start of Gamescom 2016, a event equivalent to E3 that takes place in Germany, came the live stream from EA, Electronic Arts, and with it came the announcement that Titanfall 2, the sequel to Respawn Enertainment’s breakout hit, Titanfall, was getting a pre–alpha tech test, a way for the developers to test out the game and get feedback on certain features of the game, this past weekend and this upcoming weekend for PS4 and Xbox One. A few colleagues and I downloaded the tech test to see how the game was coming along so far in terms of its multiplayer aspect, something that a lot of player loved about the first game due to how fast and chaotic it could get, and first impressions of this game are very positive. To start, my colleagues and I jumped into a game of Bounty Hunt, a game mode where your tame battles against another team to rack up as much money as possible before the timer hits zero. Once that happens, the team with the most cash wins the game and the other team has to scramble to escape the area via jump ship, while the other team is tasked with eliminating all the enemy players (or pilots as they are called in the game) or destroying the escape ship before it can warp to space and escape with the losing team. We had an absolute blast playing this game mode as there is no shortage of fast and explosive action going on at any time during the game. Another game mode that was available was “Pilot vs Pilot”, a version of team death match that does not allow you to call in the iconic mechs of the series, Titans, and have to rely on your skills as a pilot to get more eliminations than the enemy

pilots to win and make them flee the area in their “jump ship”. The other game mode was “Amped Hardpoint”, which is like domination in Call of Duty but with a twist. If you stand on a captured point for a minute after you have claimed it for your team, you will “amp” it, which means it will give your team double points for a short amount of time. The one thing the Titanfall series is known for it the titular Titan, which are hulking mechs that the human pilots are trained to operate. Whereas in Titanfall you could switch up the weapons and abilities of the titans, there are now 8 titans with unique weapons and abilities. There were only two available for the tech test and those being the medium sized “Ion”, which specialized in energy weapons and high defensive capabilities and moderate speed and came equipped with a core ability that, when charged up, allowed it to fire a devastating laser that can destroy a unprepared titan. The other titan is the heavy fire specialist, “Scorch”, which can deal out a lot of damage and can dent zones with his massive thermal cannon and canisters that release a gas that can be ignited to set an area ablaze. Scorch’s core ability allows him the smash the ground with his hands releasing a devastating shockwave of fire towards anyone foolish enough to be there. The other titans will be available in the full game, one of which will be a nimble titan called “Ronin”, which instead of a gun, has a massive sword. Impressions of this game so far are very positive and my colleagues and I are definitely looking forward to the next tech test coming this Friday, August 26. If you own a PS4 or an Xbox One and you’re a fan of first person shooters and giant mechs, definitely give this a go and I promise you will not be disappointed.

LA DEVOCIÓN A SAN RAMÓN NONATO Mario Jiménez Castillo El Observador San Ramón Nonato es un santo muy venerado dentro de la religión católica, durante siglos se han hecho romerías y novenas en su honor, se le aclama como un santo que concede todo tipo de milagros. Se dice que es el santo de la discreción y se le venera para alejar chismes, habladurías y descubrir calumnias, el día de su celebración es el 31 de agosto. Se le venera especialmente para proteger a mujeres que tienen embarazos de alto riesgo y cuando ocurren accidentes o enfermedades que pueden poner en riesgo la vida de los bebés. También se le pide para encontrar niñeras y maestros de moralidad ejemplar. Nació alrededor del año 1200, Nonato no es su apellido sino un sobre nombre que se le dio desde niño, ya que su madre murió antes que él naciera y tuvo que hacerse una cesárea post mortis para traerlo al mundo. Su padre se encargó que el Santo tuviera una educación ejemplar. En el año 1222 fue ordenado como sacerdote, conocido entre la gente como un católico modelo. En aquellos tiempos, en el norte de África habían cristianos prisioneros de los invasores. San Ramón conseguía reunir suficiente dinero para pagar por el rescate de ellos. Una ocasión en la que no logró reunir la cantidad acordada, él mismo se ofreció en canje con los secuestradores. Quienes le apresaron le hicieron sufrir toda las vejaciones posibles, para después pedir un cuantioso rescate por él. Sus labios fueron cocidos para que no hablara de Cristo. Pasó todo tipo de tormentos, hasta que finalmente la suma de dinero requerida fue conseguida. Después de ese

trance, retornó a Roma, siguió ayudando a los pobres y a las viudas de los prisioneros que no sobrevivían. A los cuarenta años de edad, comenzó a padecer de una fiebre que duró varias semanas, hasta que su cuerpo no resistió y falleció orando a Cristo y a la Virgen Santísima. Es el Santo patrón de todas las mujeres al momento de dar a luz. Peticiones especiales Se le pide por los recién nacidos, los niños menores de dos años, las mujeres embarazadas, cuando existe un embarazo con complicaciones y para protegerse de habladurías y envidias. Algunas personas tienen la creencia que conseguirán favores del santo si le tapan la boca con un pañuelo o una cinta, estas son solamente leyendas, las imágenes de los santos deben ser maniobradas con respeto y veneración.

En noviembre del 2000, los electores del Condado de Santa Clara aprobaron la Iniciativa de Ley A, un impuesto sobre ventas de medio centavo durante 30 años, dedicado a proyectos y operaciones específicos de mejoras capitales al transporte público. La mayor parte de los proyectos definidos por votación son masivos y muy complejos, requiriendo años para su planeación, diseño y construcción. YOUR COMFORT ZONE MAY DESTROY THE WORLD Shelly Palmer Here’s what’s going to happen. You are going to read this post up to the point where you agree with me or you don’t. Then, either you will find something else to do or, if I have your attention, you will write a comment or an email that espouses your world view. This sounds great. Except it isn’t. Because whether you agree with me or not, a huge percentage of you will not read past the point where your personal bias is confirmed. If my writing is inside your comfort zone, you will stop reading because we see eye to eye. If my writing is outside your comfort zone, you will stop reading because your time to engage with content is limited and you don’t want to be uncomfortable while doing it. Sadly, staying in our ideological comfort zones has put us on a path to world destruction.

I write an article every Sunday about emerging trends and the impact they may have on media, entertainment and marketing. If you know my work, you know I don’t write about politics or religion, just tech trends and what I think they mean. So comments from readers should be professional, should be on topic and should further the discourse with related criticism and opposing points of view. But that’s not what’s happening. Have a look at a few recent posts: “The Video Selfie That Changed the World” or “Russian Email Hackers: Are You Next?” or “Facebook Is Killing Clickbait and The Results Will Surprise You.” Then scroll down to the comments for an object lesson in the dangers of confirmation bias and the latest craze: spewing opinion as fact. If this were on some random site or a mainstream media site, I would not be surprised at all. But these posts are on LinkedIn, a site where (for obvious reasons) one would expect a certainly level of

In the physical world, an echo chamber is a room where sound reflects off the walls. The early reflections are perceived as echoes and the later reflections are perceived as reverberation. In social discourse, an echo chamber is a place where like-minded people keep reinforcing each other’s world views. MSNBC is a left-leaning echo chamber. Fox News is a right-leaning echo chamber. You can name hundreds of examples yourself. But echo chambers do not challenge our world views, they do not expand our minds, and they do not promote Socratic debate. They just blanket us in the comfort of what we like to hear. Importantly, it doesn’t matter how much moral high ground you believe your echo chamber represents – an echo chamber is a closed-loop system that constantly feeds back on itself. Living in an echo chamber is not an evolutionarily stable strategy. The Quick, but Painful, Death of Truth Journalism has been on life support since the advent of social media, but this past year we have witnessed the quick, painful death of truth, and it may be gone forever. Put a comfortable lie in an echo chamber, and nobody will challenge it. It will reverberate until it is accepted as actually true. Then, the willfully ignorant will shout it as loudly as they can. It may be their truth, but that does not make it true.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone While we may not post really stupid stuff online or make outrageous comments to inspire others to do violence, we are all guilty of enjoying the pleasures of our respective comfort zones. We live in a world with extraordinary filters. They can easily be programmed to only send us notifications of things we want to hear. There are websites and news feeds across the entire spectrum of belief systems, and it is super easy to find your comfort zone and stay there. Don’t. The best way to get the world on track is to do our best to understand each other. We need to relearn how to respect other points of view. We don’t need to agree with them, but we need to read far enough down the page to understand what is really being said. We must listen when we converse. We must see when we look. The alternative is a cacophony of isolated echo chambers, each believing that they have the moral high ground, and each sure that their respective deity is on their side. It’s clearly where we are headed, and in practice, we may already be there. You may not think that your comfort zone could destroy the world, but your comfort zone is a place where you accept the things you cannot change.
