Two years later he joined the Na tional Institutes of Health (NIH) and rose to become the director of the National Institute of Allergy and In fectious Diseases since 1984. His career has been tied to the great medical battles of our time: HIV/AIDS, Ebola, COVID, Monkeypox and many Hismore.scientific achievements include the development of medical thera pies against incurable diseases and contributions on the functioning of the immune system, among others.

But I dare say that one of his most outstanding public battles was against a president at odds with sci ence, Donald Trump.

He is more recognizable than many politicians or athletes. During the last few years he has been the visible face of the cam paign to face the COVID pandemic.

It is a paradox that Fauci, the cham pion against infectious diseases, has had to defend himself and even receive personal protection for de fending science against the irre sponsible statements of the Trump era in relation to COVID. But Fauci came out intact and will continue to do so despite the po litical vendetta that Republicans like Senator Rand Paul want to set up now that he has announced that he will leave the Biden administration as of December. If anything, their at tacks will only further increase the stature of a man of integrity who has been respected by all but one presi Theredent. is no doubt that we are going to miss Anthony Fauci. His voice of measure in the worst moments of the COVID pandemic was a great dose of relief in the face of the cha os that reigned in the Trump White HisHouse.personal and professional story is a source of inspiration for all and a testament to the importance of per sonal integrity and the value of sci ence as the best medicine against lies.

The same man appears on the po dium of the White House, in front of television cameras or in front of the spotlight at popular events. At 81, Anthony Fauci is the closest thing to a rock star. “We recognized early that education is go ing to be a major motivating issue for many Californians this year,” said Ellie Hocken bury, spokesperson for the state GOP.

Sonja Shaw is running for a seat on the Chino Valley school board in the Inland Empire, with help from the state Republican Party. “I’m running because I want to make sure that parents have a voice on the board, and to preserve the rights of a parent. During the shutdown, parents were pushed out, and we have had enough," she said on Aug. 14, 2022.

Also, the state GOP says it doesn’t give di rectly to school board candidates, but said its training provides non-monetary sup port. The April workshop and virtual event in July had at least 100 attendees each. The party has also conducted one-on-one sessions with prospective candidates.

The state party said it works closely with county parties on attendee lists for training sessions, and follows their decisions on candidates. “We will follow the county par ty’s lead against supporting this expelled Republican,” Hockenbury said.

“Don’t worry about the Ukraine, don’t worry about D.C. You can do something socially useful, and start showing up to your school board meetings.”

The meeting focused on running for lo cal school board seats, and it was led by Shawn Steel, a former party chairperson. Now, he’s one of the biggest evangelists for strengthening the GOP by recruiting new candidates and voters in what are, of ficially at least, nonpartisan races.

One candidate is Sonja Shaw, who is run ning for a seat on the Chino Valley School Board in the Inland Empire. Shaw, a parent of an eighth grader and a 10th grader, used to volunteer in the class room, but says that during the pandemic, the school board became less accessible and less transparent about its decisionmaking. “When they closed down, parents were exited out of the school system,” she Thensaid.

The goal: To capitalize on COVID pandem ic frustrations and concerns over “critical race theory” and other issues among par ents of school-aged children — and win not only school board seats, but also, even tually, legislative and congressional races by re-engaging core Republican voters and attracting independents.

‘A logical outgrowth’

But while the state Democratic party isn’t amping up its school board efforts in 2022, the GOP is going in big with its “Parent Re volt” program — what party officials call their most tailored school board recruit ment and training program ever. It includes virtual training sessions that detail how and where to run for office, plus tips for digital campaigns and going door-to-door.

“Ultimately I think parents want the best education for their kids,” he told CalMat ters. “And is banning books and punishing teachers and those kinds of activities – is that top of mind for parents? No, I don’t be lieve so.”

Instead, Republicans have “become a party that focuses on presidential politics and local campaigns,” said Dan Schnur, a politics professor at UC Berkeley, USC and ThePepperdine.focuson school board races, he said, “is a logical outgrowth of that strategy.”

BACK TO SCHOOL: CALIFORNIA REPUBLICANS BET BIG ON LOCAL BOARD RACES

But Rusty Hicks, chairperson of the Califor nia Democratic Party, said he sees some within the Republican Party using “this re ally challenging moment in our history” to further divide the state for political gain.

But a little-noticed, hour-long session in a small conference room at the Marriott could very well be more consequential for the state GOP this election.

on Nov. 8, Republican Lance Christensen, earned a top-two spot with only 12% of the vote. He has raised only about $55,000 so far, compared to near ly $1.7 million for Thurmond, who is also boosted by $2.3 million in independent ex penditures on his behalf.

“It’s the one instance where the David really can defeat the Goliath — when David con tinues to be so arrogant,” said Sean Walsh, a GOP strategist.

Party officials, consultants and candidates of both parties say school choice is not at the forefront of the election this year for a number of reasons, including the pandem ic, the shift of the issue to the local level, and the passage of Assembly Bill 1505 in 2019, which changed how publicly funded charter schools operate in California. This year, the GOP is seeking to capitalize on the increased political engagement of parents — which started with COVID poli cies, but has carried over to national issues such as “critical race theory” and sex edu “Ication.think there’s a real demand that this pow er structure is challenged and overturned, and that’s what we’re seeing right now,” Steel said. “We don’t lead it. We don’t own it. But if we can help inspire people, par ticularly newcomers…”

“Whereas it is often the case that top-ofthe-ticket races help turnout for down-bal lot races, we also believe that local races could be just as big a motivator for many to drive turnout. Having strong candidates in school board races could help our slate of candidates at every level.”

“When you’re a minority party, like Republi cans in California … you have to think, ‘Well, what can we do as a party to make a big difference?’” Steel told CalMatters. “You see the schools are just in great freefall and chaos. Parents don’t want to send their kids there. So this is the time to get people that are otherwise angst-ridden, upset, Inpowerless.”California, Democrats have long used school boards as a recruiting and training ground for political candidates — with help from teachers’ unions.

Perrine, a member of the farright Proud Boys seeking a Sacramentoarea school board seat, was banned from participating in the Sacramento County Republican Party’s events after aggressive behavior, including threats to members, and derogatory comments about immi grants, said Betsy Mahan, chairperson of the county party. Mahan said Perrine’s removal was not strictly about his asso ciation with the Proud Boys, but about his

the GOP provided a level of guid ance on running a campaign that Shaw otherwise wouldn’t have had: “We were treading water, without knowing where we’re going,” she said.

Party would not disclose its goals for recruited candidates, other than as many as possible. It also wouldn’t say how much it is spending on its “Parent Revolt” effort.

There are about 2,500 races for local school board seats in California in Novem ber — about half of the total 5,000 seats, according to the California School Boards Association. The filing deadline for candi dates was Friday, though it was extended until today for seats held by incumbents not seeking reelection. While no statewide tally exists, of the nine seats up for election in the three largest school districts — Los Angeles, San Diego, and Fresno — three are open seats, where no incumbent is Therunning.Republican

The GOP’s lack of attention on the super intendent race is a reflection of the party’s record statewide and the daunting odds of unseating a Democratic-backed incum bent, given the 2 to 1 Democratic advan tage in voter registration.

Will the strategy work? Some political con sultants think it could be a smart way to go.

But not every candidate running for school board as a Republican gets the party’s Jeffreysupport.Erik

In California’s 2022 election, the big action on education isn’t in the statewide race for the superintendent of public instruction. That’s a departure from the last midterm election in 2018, when it was one of the state’s most hotly contested races. With the help of teachers’ unions, Tony Thurmond narrowly defeated school choice advocate Marshall Tuck. The two — both Democrats in the nonpartisan race — spent $60 million combined. This year, there has been little challenge to Thur mond, who won 46% of the vote in the June 7 primary, just shy of the majority he needed to win outright without going to HisNovember.challenger

“Webehavior.don’t ask people what organizations they belong to,” she said. “We look at how they act and if they are supportive in gen eral of our party platform.”

Other organizations involved include Let Them Breathe, a group that advocates for more parental say, including against mask mandates; the Californians for Equal Rights Foundation; and churches, though as non profits, they’re not permitted to do more than provide information.

Prospects for success

“What I would hope is that these efforts actually engage seriously with issues that matter to voters … and not on sort of manu factured stuff about transgender athletes, or pick a topic, that these culture wars that conservative candidates in other places are running on,” Polikoff said. How likely are candidates to succeed?

“It’s more than likely that Republicans can reinforce their strengths in their regions of core support,” he said. “But it’s an open question whether they can expand be yond that base.”

Polikoff said that depends on how much candidates can stay on message with is sues that matter to parents and voters. “In my view, the reason why the Republican Party has really struggled in California is the candidates are too extreme for where the majority of the state is,” he said.

“It did inspire me to think that I can do it,” she Onesaid.point emphasized in the training ses sions: It usually doesn’t cost a lot to run for school board. The cost varies depending on the district size, according to Mari Barke, a member of the Orange County Board of Educa tion and director of the California Policy Center’s project to recruit and train local elected officials. Barke espouses the low-cost “walk to win” strategy by going door-to-door, but ac knowledges that’s not always possible in large districts, rural areas or in gated com munities. That’s where mailers come in handy, and they can cost anywhere from $10,000 in a smaller district to $40,000 in a large one.

Fueled by parents’ anger over pandemic school shutdowns, a record 50 school board members in California were the targets of recalls in 2021, according to Ed Source. And three San Francisco school board members were recalled in February.

Lisa Gardiner, spokesperson for the 310,000-member California Teachers As sociation, said the union’s local chapters do endorse school board candidates, but not along partisan lines. She also disputed that teachers’ unions have too much influence over school boards, saying that “the real power resides in parents, educators, stu dents and communities working together.”

“November’s school board elections are a critical opportunity for all of us to stand to gether to support racially and socially eq uitable schools, and the public education our students need to succeed,” she said in a statement.

Counter-messaging by Democrats

To counter some of the anti-union mes saging from GOP-recruited candidates, the California Teachers Association has spoken out in support of pro-union candi dates, many of whom happen to be Dem Hicksocrats.said that while there’s no formal part nership between the Democratic Party and the CTA, it makes sense that they’re often allied. “I think the Democratic Party is the party of working people,” he said. “I think that means not just workers on the job, but also ensuring that workers on the job get their kids a quality education.”

In June 2021, she began attending Tustin Unified school board meetings, where she said she joined many other angry parents. Feeling shut out, Felton decided to enter politics, and took part in the state GOP July training session, which she said taught her “the practicality of running.”

Some candidates who took part in the GOP sessions said they’ve taken part in training by other groups as well.

The state GOP isn’t alone in recruiting or training school board candidates who op pose critical race theory and vaccine man dates and take issue with school unions.

Morgan Polikoff, an associate professor at USC’s Rossier School of Education, said while there are legitimate concerns about how school boards handled the pandemic, partisan influence can sometimes turn toxic — and isn’t politically beneficial, either.

That includes smaller class sizes and en suring students have pathways to college and careers, Hicks said.

But according to Steel, running for school board in regular elections is a better use of time for candidates than recalls — which can be powerful at times, but are often short-sighted. “I like to say run or recruit. Don’t bitch to me anymore,” he said.

Hicks, the California Democratic Party leader, said the Republican party’s focus on local races is not surprising, given that the Democratic Party has largely targeted state and federal races for the last two de “Ascades.aresult, Republicans have been able to maintain some level of relevance on the lo cal level,” he said. Is Hicks worried? “No, because at the end of the day while Republicans in California are trying to throw everything at the wall and hope something sticks — to keep people angry and to frankly, in my view, destroy a tradi tional free public education in California — Democrats have been focused on the most important things.”

While the state Democratic Party doesn’t have a specific strategy focused on school boards, it is operating the California version of the Democrats’ national strategy called “Contest Every Race,” recruiting candi dates to run for city council, school board and other local seats, with a focus on rural Hicksareas. said the party looks to its county chapters to take the lead on local races. In Placer County, for example, the local Dem ocratic Party is hosting phone bank events every Saturday. In Contra Costa County, the local party re sponded to concerns from school board members who reported being harassed and threatened. It passed two resolutions, one supporting the pandemic measures taken by school board members and call ing out “coordinated efforts by a ‘network of conservative groups with ties to major Republican donors and party-aligned think tanks’ to engage in culture war fights de signed to intimidate school board mem bers so they can be replaced by radical Aconservatives.”secondresolution passed in November 2021 backed the district’s ethnic studies curriculum and criticized the effort to mis lead parents into confusing critical race theory with ethnic studies.

Schnur said that while education is an is sue that Democrats believe belongs to them, the pandemic concerns could help the GOP.

Similar to its California Trailblazers pro gram, which focuses on running for legis lative seats, participants received a binder of information that includes not just dead lines and required forms, but also vendor options, website design tools and tips on how to make the most of campaign funds. There’s also a website dedicated to the cause, plus emails sent out weekly from a rotation of Republican leaders: Steel, party Chairperson Jessica Millan Patterson, U.S. Rep. Michelle Steel, gubernatorial candi date state Sen. Brian Dahle, Christensen and Republican National Committee member Harmeet Dhillon. During the party’s July event, speakers didn’t dictate specific talking points. In stead, they encouraged participants to fo cus on the issues important to their com Formunity.Kelly Felton, a first-time candidate run ning for a Tustin Unified School District seat in Orange County, that issue was the “po litical narratives” being taught to her kids (one in 7th grade, and one who is in 10th), including critical race theory, sex education and the use of gender pronouns.

For the GOP, that’s a more cost-effective way to win seats. The state party has said it wants to focus its limited resources on congressional races, rather than statewide legislative races.

With land banking, LA County or a nonprofit en tity created by it, could purchase plots of land and hold them, keeping costs lower. This system would potentially exempt the entity from property taxes while the land is not in use.

Los Angeles County is getting ready to launch a project that could lower existing barriers to building much-needed affordable housing in the region. The model, already in use in other cities, would allow the county to purchase and hold land, keeping it out of the speculative market while housing is built.

A county report with details on the implementa tion of the land bank will be presented mid-Sep tember to the L.A. County Board of Supervisors but it could take a few months to launch the proj ect and secure a first round of acquisitions.

The initial project is part of the L.A. River Master Plan, though officials plan to take it countywide in hopes of narrowing a massive shortfall in affordable housing made worse by the Covid 19 pandemic.

Land banking is not a new concept, said Jon Christensen, a professor at the Luskin Center for Innovation and the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA. But the one in Los Angeles will work differently than the ones exist ing in Detroit or New Orleans, he noted.

“In many places hit by a natural disaster and the area becomes vacant — or tax delinquent — a land bank is used to buy the land not being used,” said Christensen. “In LA it is actually the opposite, the point is to get in front of public investments to ensure there’s equitable development.”

In places where land is expensive, like Denver, land banking can significantly reduce the cost of building affordable housing, said Tarik Abdelaz im, of the National Land Bank Network, based in Michigan.

Initially conceived as part of the recently ap proved L.A. River Master Plan, County officials say they eventually intend to take the land bank ing concept countywide.

The Land Bank project was approved as a com panion to the L.A. River Master Plan and is initially tied to areas within 2 miles of the river that are vulnerable to increased displacement and gen trification as a result of the large public works in vestment envisioned under the Master Plan. It is meant to eventually expand to the whole county, officials say.

The board directed $50 million in federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 to be used for the land bank program. This will be enough to purchase land for about 800 units of affordable housing. The master plan projects 5,200 such units will be required in the coming Sourcesyears. from the Board of Supervisors indicated that the goal is to secure at least 175 million dol lars as a first step in setting up the land bank, and that vulnerable areas near the L.A. River will be the first focus.

“The County can then work with local non-profits, Community Land Trusts, and Affordable Housing Developers to develop affordable housing on the land bank sites. A land bank could also support preservation of existing affordable housing by purchasing existing buildings,” said Jessica Hen son, of OLIN Studio, a landscaping and design Bothfirm.

Olin and Gehry partners, along with the Southeast Asian Community Alliance and Street Level Advisors, along with LA County experts, made the case for a land bank in the context of the L.A. River Master Plan project recently ap proved by the Board of Supervisors.

“Land prices can become a huge obstacle in these [affordable housing] projects,” said Tensho Takimori, partner at the architectural firm Gehry Partners LLP, which worked with LA County on the design of the L.A. River Master Plan. Takimori explained that the cost of holding land and paying property taxes while a project comes to fruition often makes it cost prohibitive for many afford able housing developers.

“What happens in the neighborhoods that need investment the most is that the residents [in these neighborhoods] are the lowest income folks. Those neighborhoods need investment, parks, and public transit etc.,” said Sissy Trinh from the Southeast Asian Community Alliance, who par ticipated in the L.A. River Master Plan planning Butprocess.improving these areas has often meant that long-time residents who have lived in these neighborhoods long before they became desir able get pushed out, added Trinh. Los Angeles County is already confronting a seri ous deficit of affordable housing, a situation made more dire by the pandemic. According to Coun ty sources, Los Angeles needs to add nearly 500,000 affordable homes to meet demand for households at or below 50 percent area median Evenincome.prior to the pandemic, 64 percent of renter households at this income level were severely cost-burdened, paying more than 50 percent of their household income on rent. Poverty and homelessness increased.

A group of environmental and community activ ists who first participated in the development of the L.A. River Master plan and later sued to prevent it, arguing there was no sufficient com munity participation in the project, said they are in favor of the land bank.

Public authority land banks are already active in cities like Detroit, Philadelphia, and Eugene, Or egon. Similar projects managed by nonprofits exist in Atlanta, Denver, Minneapolis/St Paul and Richmond Virginia.

A massive public works investment like the L.A. River Master Plan, or any project that expands public transportation — such as those now be ing undertaken by L.A. METRO (new subway lines and stations) — can push the value of land way up, driving up rents and displacing long-term residents in vulnerable areas at the same time.

Brian Levin with the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State-San Bernadino says rhetoric from elected officials and media has helped fuel the uptick in hate crimes and hate inci dents across the country.

For Sassana Yee, whose grandmother died after being brutally beaten in San Francisco in 2019, healing has meant building cross-cultural connec tions between communities that often exist side by “Herside.death has sparked in me an awareness to reach across cultural lines and develop friend ships,” said Yee, who advocates for what she calls transformational justice.

Monroe says that while hate incidents may not technically be criminal acts, they can have a “dev astating impact on the person and the commu nity” being targeted. And while there is ample data available on hate crimes, experts say the numbers are likely far from “Thereaccurate.is no question when you look at the data that hate crimes are on the rise, but they are also underreported,” Monroe explained. The FBI counts just over 8,000 hate crimes per year, notes Monroe, but the real number could be closer to The250,000.disparity is explained in part by the fact that many victims often do not see law enforcement as a safe or reliable option when it comes to report ing hate crimes. For Monroe, focusing on commu nity-centered strategies will “help us to connect individuals with culturally competent resources and Anothersupport.”factor has to do with state and local law enforcement agencies, which are not mandated to provide data on hate crimes to the FBI. In fact, 85% of law enforcement agencies serving juris dictions with over 100,000 people in California routinely report zero hate crimes in their area. Nationwide, the majority of hate crimes continue to be perpetrated by white men, while the major ity of victims are African American. But in recent years there has been a spike in hate crimes target ing Asian Americans, Latinos, Muslims, and Jews. According to Stop AAPI Hate data, there have been 11,000 incidents of hate targeting the AAPI community since 2020. The majority have taken place in public spaces and have targeted largely women and elders.

“He used to say: ‘There is a reason for hope, and that reason is actually in all the people who are tar geted for hate.’ Many communities who had every reason to give up on this country refused to give up on the idea of making this a more just place for all.”

Stop AAPI Hate is currently pushing two bills in the California State Legislature to work with state of ficials in three core areas: civil rights, community safety, and educational equity.

“Hate doesn’t happen in a vacuum,” says Becky L. Monroe with the California Civil Rights Depart ment. “If we're truly going to address hate inci dents and hate crimes, we have to enforce all of our civil rights protections.”

Monroe, among a panel of speakers during a media briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services, referenced her former mentor at the Department of Justice, Ron Wakabayashi, whose family was among some 120,000 Japanese Americans sent to concentration camps during WWII.

“Anti-Latino hate crimes in 2018 were the highest in a decade because of the craven discussion on TV,” noted Levin, adding that hate crimes target ing the LGBTQ community doubled in Los Angeles and rose 40% nationwide in that same year, with attacks becoming “more vicious and more violent.”

Last May, the legislature approved renaming the playground where Sassana’s grandmother, Yik Oi Huang, was attacked as Yik Oi Huang Peace and Friendship Park. “A black elder in the community suggested this name,” noted Yee, “which is a very potent symbolic gesture of solidarity.”

As part of her work, Yee led a month-long road trip around the country with 10 high schoolers: half Af rican American and half Chinese American.

In response to the rise in hate crimes and hate incidents, California’s Civil Rights Department is launching the ‘California vs Hate’ initiative, a re source line and network to support victims, and to increase awareness around what is a hate crime and how to report them when they occur.

And while Levin agrees that non-carceral solu tions are an important tool in addressing the rise in hate, he also notes that the Justice Department currently prosecutes fewer than 20% of referrals.

Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Filipinos and Viet namese Americans are among the groups most targeted, with 63% of cases involving verbal ha rassment, 16% physical assault, and 11% civil rights Stopviolations.AAPI Hate Director and Co-Founder Man jusha Kulkarni says the drivers behind these in cidents vary, and so “a one-size fits all solution doesn’t work.” She added, “Policing is not going to be the answer. We need a comprehensive civil rights infrastructure all across the country.”

California state and federal law define a hate crime as a criminal act targeting individuals on the basis of gender, race, nationality, religion or political af Afiliation.hateincident, on the other hand, is an action that, while motivated by hate, may not cross the line into criminality. Common examples include racist name calling or displaying hateful messaging tar geting protected groups.

UU.”, dijo. “Llegamos a entender quiénes somos como individuos y como colectivo”.

Hate crimes and hate-related incidents have been on the rise in recent years, prompting fear and anger across communities. But ac cording to experts and civil rights advocates more public engagement — not increased policing — is key to addressing the issue. And, they say, raising public awareness is a critical step toward individual and communal healing.

Newsom plays on the fears that an ‘unlimited’ num ber of Overdose Prevention Programs could have been opened, this would have been a limited pilot program that was only for five years and three jurisdictions, with an extremely thorough eval uation process,” said Jean nette Zanipatin, state director at the Drug Policy Alliance, another bill sponsor.

“Fueling the drug epi demic with drug dens and needle supplies is like pouring gasoline on a for est fire.”

San Francisco has been considering this idea for al most a decade, and had the bill passed, it would likely have been the first ready to launch a program in early 2023, Zanipatin said. Last year, New York City be came the first to establish su pervised injection sites in the U.S. Cities in other countries have operated such centers for years, including Vancou ver, Mexicali and Barcelona. The Vancouver site is often referenced as a model — with about 1,700 individuals using it each month, the cen ter is credited with reducing overdose deaths in its neigh borhood and city. Switzer land was the first country to open a supervised injection site in Following1986.Newsom’s veto, San Francisco City Attor ney David Chiu told the San Francisco Chronicle that he supported moving forward with plans for a safe injection site regardless of state sup port, the way New York City had. But a state law could have granted more legal and political cover to whichever community organization ran the site, Zanipatin said.

Among those urging the governor to veto the bill was the Senate Republican Cau cus. “Fueling the drug epi demic with drug dens and needle supplies is like pour ing gasoline on a forest fire. It merely worsens the prob lem,” the caucus wrote in an Aug. 1 letter to Newsom. Law enforcement organiza tions also stated their oppo sition to the bill, saying it sent the wrong message to the public and failed to address addiction at its root.

The bill came with no dollars attached, meaning that each county or city interested in setting up a site would have to find its own source of funding to operate the sites. Each site could cost a couple of million of dollars a year to operate.

GOVERNOR VETOES SUPERVISED DRUG INJECTION SITES

An often-referenced survey of 602 injection drug users in San Francisco showed that 85% would use a su pervised injection site. About 75% of them said they would use it at least three days per Theweek.idea, according to sup porters, is to build trust with people who come in, prompting them to spread the word and eventually link people to treatment when they are ready.

Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would have allowed a handful of California cities and counties to operate supervised drug injection sites. In his veto message, he said he’s concerned these sites could result in unintended consequences or worsen the drug crisis. Karolina Grabowska / Pexels

“Worsening drug con sumption challenges in these areas is not a risk we can take.”

Following Newsom’s veto, the Senate Republicans re leased a statement in which they took credit for “secur ing” a veto. “People struggling with addiction need help, not a legal place to shoot up,” said Sen. Scott Wilk, a Lan caster Republican. The overdose crisis has be come one of the most press ing public health issues, with deaths and emergency room visits spiking in recent years, in large part due to the infiltration of the synthetic opioid fentanyl. Overdose deaths from fentanyl jumped from 1,603 in 2019 to 3,946 in 2020, and then to 5,722 in 2021, according to the Cali fornia Opioid Overdose Sur veillance California’sDashboard.secondswing at this policy came as the Biden administration embraces “harm reduction” strategies — which focus on keeping drug users alive and safe rather than punishing them. Needle exchange programs and programs that distrib ute the overdose reversal drug naloxone are some ex Wieneramples. and supporters of the bill said supervised in jection sites would not have solved the overdose crisis. Rather, the goal was to pre vent deaths.

-SENATE REPUBLICAN OpponentsCAUCUS had also raised concerns about the bill not providing a “cognizable strat egy for figuring out how to get the addict to the injection site,” John Lovell, a lobbyist with the California Narcotic Officers’ Association, said during a hearing earlier this month. “What injection sites do is there is a magnet effect so that people come into the area,” but that doesn’t mean they will actually go inside the facility, he said.

For years, the idea of es tablishing supervised drug injection sites has been a long-standing goal for some progressive California leaders looking to address the burgeoning overdose crisis. But that goal continues to be elusive as Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would set up such sites in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland. Senate Bill 57 would have authorized these overdose prevention pilot programs through Jan. 1, 2028. “I have long supported the cutting edge of harm reduc tion strategies. However, I am acutely concerned about the operations of safe injec tion sites without strong, en gaged local leadership and well-documented, vetted, and thoughtful operational and sustainability plans,” Newsom said in his veto message Monday, noting his concern for unintended con “Worseningsequences. drug consump tion challenges in these ar eas is not a risk we can take,” he Gov.wrote.Jerry Brown also re jected similar legislation in 2018, but supporters of the bill were hopeful Newsom would sign this one after he said he was open to the idea during his campaign for gov Theernor.goal of these programs, supporters said, is to provide drug users a safe, hygienic space where they can get clean needles and admin ister their own drugs under the supervision of trained staff. Staff members would monitor users and be ready to administer overdose re versal medications if need ed, which could ultimately save lives. Medical groups in support of these programs have pointed out injection sites could also help reduce the risk of Hepatitis C and HIV infections associated with intravenous drug use.

Sen. Scott Wiener, the San Francisco Democrat who authored the bill, called New som’s veto tragic. “By rejecting a proven and extensively studied strat egy to save lives and get people into treatment, this veto sends a powerful nega tive message that California is not committed to harm reduction,” Wiener said in a “Forstatement.eightyears, a broad co alition has worked to pass this life-saving legislation. Each year this legislation is delayed, more people die of drug overdoses,” he added.

Sponsors of the bill called Newsom’s decision a po litical move from a blue state governor whose recent ac tions have fueled specula tion that he could be plan ning a presidential bid.

“This is an opportunity to experience An cient Egypt like never before,” described World Heritage Exhibitions President, John Norman. “Visitors will not only see priceless historical artifacts but can also transport themselves to Egyptian temples in an electrifying virtual reality journey across the sands of the Sahara Desert. We are, once again, proud to bring these immersive, one-of-a-kind experiences to visitors across the globe.”

Ramses the Great’s tomb is located in the Valley of the Kings, the final resting place of New Kingdom pharaohs for over 500 years. This tomb was plundered in ancient times. Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharaohs includes objects from royal tombs found elsewhere in Egypt to offer an idea of the extraordinary objects that Ramses’s tomb must have included.

“Ramses II is considered to be the greatest king ever to rule Egypt,” says Egypt’s Sec retary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Dr Mostafa Waziri. “This exhi bition will illuminate the pivotal moments that earned the great pharaoh his place in history, while bringing visitors face-to-face with absolutely stunning Egyptian artifacts. Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharaohs is one of the most remarkable exhibitions to ever tour the globe, and it is a true honor for it to visit the great city of San Francisco and the de Young museum. We encourage patrons from across the region, and the country, to make it a point to come and see this splendid display.”

“We are delighted to share these rarely seen treasures from Egypt’s Golden Age with Bay Area audiences,” said Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. “Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharaohs reveals the power and splendor of ancient Egypt, and expands on the history con veyed within our own collection of ancient art. Once the exhibition completes its in ternational tour, these objects will return to Egyptian museums and will likely not travel again for decades.”

Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharaohs focuses on the life of the emi nent military officer Ramses II, a crown prince who eventually became one of the longest-ruling kings of Egypt in a 67-year reign. Appropriately known through time as Ramses the Great, he was the third pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty and is regarded as the mightiest and most celebrated pharaoh of the New King dom—Egypt’s Golden Age—when it was a wealthy and powerful empire. The exhi bition is brought to you in partnership with the Supreme Council of Antiquities of the Arab Republic of Egypt and is produced by World Heritage Exhibitions, a subsidiary of Cityneon Holdings. “Kings before and after Ramses erected colossal statues of themselves, but none are larger or greater in number than those commissioned by Ramses the Great,” said Renée Dreyfus, George and Judy Mar cus Distinguished Curator and Curator in Charge of Ancient Art at the Fine Arts Mu seums of San Francisco. “The temples he erected, statues he commissioned, monu ments he inscribed throughout Egypt and Nubia, and funerary temple and royal tomb he built were reminders of his earth ly power and closeness to the gods. The proliferation of his name led to it becoming almost a synonym for kingship.” This exhibition marks the first for Dreyfus under her new title of George and Judy Marcus Distinguished Curator and Cura tor in Charge of Ancient Art, establishing the Museums’ first-ever staff endowed position. George and Judy Marcus, who have been longtime supporters of the Fine Arts Museums, have generously donated to establish this position and have worked closely with Dreyfus over her remarkable 45-year tenure with the Museums. This endowment will support Dreyfus’s excep tional work in the Ancient Art department, including the Museums’ study and promo tion of ancient art, exemplified in exhibi tions like Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharaohs

speaking, Americans spend nearly $120 billion on furniture and bedding per year, and 84 percent buy furnishings new. This in creased demand, leading to increased produc tion, means that companies looking to cut costs rely on cheaper, less sustainable materials. This results in to furniture that’s not built to last and therefore ends up on the curb. In fact, the U.S. En vironmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that nearly nine million tons of furniture enter landfills every year. On top of that, the manufac turing of many of these furnishings consumes considerable amounts of natural resources, and some may contain toxic chemicals that impact both the environment and human health. Fortu nately, there are ethical and sustainable options available when it comes to furnishing a home or Aapartment.largenumber of companies now offer greenfriendly products that use sustainable materials and manufacturing methods.

Second-hand furniture offers further options for sustainable furnishings. “The most sustain able products are those that already exist,” says Nicole Sarto of Stanford magazine. Local charity shop items tend to be quality pickings simply in need of washing or a new paint job. IKEA now has a furniture buyback program, giving store credit for second-hand IKEA furniture that they refurbish and resell. Furniture rental is also an option for sustainably furnishings, especially if a person changes residence frequently. Beyond furniture, the smaller details of a home or apartment can also be sustainably sourced. Water-saving showerheads, eco-friendly light ing, and energy-saving curtains and blinds are all items to consider when furnishing a space. Like any sustainable lifestyle choice, furnishing a home or apartment is about more than choosing a comfortable couch or chic end table. It’s about how the item was made, what it’s made with, and where it’s ultimately going to end up.

Lead actress of new vampire thriller talks about DNA tests, learning pottery and why you should always bring a friend to a wedding

Over the past few years, Actress Nathalie Emmanuel has seen the great dragons of Westeros in Game of Thrones as Missandei, the fan favorite aide to Daenerys Targaryen, and provided the tech wizardry to Dominic Toretto and the squad as Ramsey in the last three blockbuster Fast and the Furious films Now Emmanuel gets the opportunity to shine as the lead character in a gothic tale of intrigue, vam pires and weddings gone wrong. The Invitation premieres this week and invites audiences on a journey to a remote British estate to witness the drama and horror behind a very closeknit family who is not what they seem. In the film, Emmanuel’s character of Evie tries out a DNA test which leads to her discovering she has roots in England with an old money family. She is promptly sent a message by one of her long-lost cousins through the DNA app, asking her to catch up, and later meets them in person to personally in vite her to a family reunion of sorts, a wedding “for the ages” in England.

Recently Emmanuel was gracious enough to chat about the movie, and in the following interview she breaks down how she learned to create pottery with a famed London artist down her street, why she’s a fan of horror movies, and what she was surprised to find out about family DNA test results.

Q&A: NATHALIE EMMANUEL & THE INVITATION

Yeah, someone in my family did do a DNA test. I haven't personally, but it was someone who was closely related, so a lot of it applied to me. And it was really interesting. We learned a lot, because my family have ancestry through the Caribbean, through the West Indies, and through St. Lucia and Dominica, and we were sort of learning about our story before Dominica, like, whereabouts our an cestry came from in the west coast of Africa. So there's that story of the enslaved people be ing brought over. And I guess for a lot of former colonies, we often claim our island, but obviously there's a whole story before that. And so we got to sort of learn a little bit about what part of Africa our ancestry was, which was really amazing and surreal. What was it like filming this gloomy gothic thrill er at this estate? The house exteriors of the house, that's obviously a location a couple of hours outside of Budapest, it was this amazing house. Most of the interior sets were built, but then we had kind of underground cellars and also the rehearsal dinner scene that was filmed in the house. But we used a lot of the exteriors. And, yeah, it's a stunning house, but also has such a kind of ominous presence, too. So it very much is kind of like another character in the film. So are you a fan of the horror/thriller movies in general? Yes, I am. I'm a huge fan of the kind of suspensefilled, slow burning storytelling. think it's really just like such a fun and clever way of telling a story. And, you know, you're sort of so engaged because you're, like, trying to work out where the scare is going to come or where the danger is going to come from. I love that kind of interactive nature of it. And it's always great watching things like that with a group because, you see, some people are like, "oh, no, it's going to be that guy," and it's not that guy, or "something's going to jump out from there," and it's like, not the thing that you think it's going to be. And I love that, experiencing everyone's sort of paranoia as a collective. It's quite fun. Can you tell me a little bit about your character of Evie and where she's at the beginning of this film that kind of prompts her to get the ball roll ing on the story? I mean, when we meet Evie, she's very much a struggling artist in New York. She's not from New York. She's kind of there on her own, really. She's when she was young. She's just about scraping by, she's very very lonely. She has her friend, her best friend, but really, she's longing for connections. So she's longing for something. She's looking for a support network, a community, and she doesn't really have that family support network. And when she sort of rolled the dice to say, "I'm going to do this DNA test that randomly got in a goodie bag," it turns out to be more than she thought it would be. She wasn't expecting it. And then she has this But I think where she's at, she's very sad, very lone ly, and Oliver, her kind of long-lost cousin, makes it very easy and so warm and charming and wel coming. And that's everything she needed at that Andtime.they very much almost prey on her vulnerabil ity in a way, in this piece, which kind of prompts her to put herself in the situation that ends up going terribly wrong. And did you have any inspirations that helped you form the portrayal that you ended up hav ing for your character? Did I have any inspirations? I mean, first of all, the first thing was like, “I need to know what this ce ramics is all about.” [Those] who go and do that successfully and do it well, it's a lot of dedication. It's a very hard art form, I found it incredibly frustrating. So for someone to be as good at it as Evie is and as talented at it as Evie is, it was a real appreciation for the art form, for sure. And other inspirations for her, I definitely listened to some podcasts about kind of like black American art, and learned about the sort of history of some of that and the legacy of women in the art world. And she's very much like part of an artistic family. And in terms of what inspired me and helped me create her, I definitely found pieces of art and imag ery that I put into collages. I had a book of collages that were about her family and about the things that she liked, her art world, where she lived, and things to form the character in my mind before we even meet her. And, yeah, the sort of legacy of, like, mothers and grandmothers and feminine, I guess, divine femi nine, had lots of imagery around that. That's wonderful. Did you get to actually bake Yeah, I had lessons for a while. I had a wonderful teacher in London called Ronaldo Wiltshire. He The Great Pottery Throw Do you know what, Jess, the director, sent me an article about black ceramicists in London. And I just saw his name, and I thought, "you know what? I want to find out if he does classes." And it turned out his studio was a six-minute walk from my house, and it was just so bizarre. And when I got sent the information about where he was, they were like, "oh, that must be why you reached out to him." And I was like, "no, I didn't know where he It was just when then received the information of where I had to go for my lesson, it was a six-minute walk from my house, and it just felt so right. And I was like, "oh, my God. This is amazing." And he was a brilliant teacher. And I actually made some pieces. I actually made some bowls, they're on my kitchen table now, and one of which I keep my keys in, and another one I put my jewelry in sometimes when I'm washing my hands or whatever. So, yeah, I've got a couple of things. They're not very good, but they are mine, and I'm proud of Well, thank you so much, Natalie. I really appre ciate the talk. Last question, what do you hope that people take away from seeing The Invita Well, I hope that you will have fun. I hope that it's like scary in a fun way. Like I think it's such a good one to watch with your friends, but I hope people take away from it what I think Evie's journey really is, that the strength that you might not know exists within you, it's there. You can find it; you can access it. And I love that about her and about this story. And may be don't go and visit strangers that you don't know. Like, maybe take a friend or friends? Yeah, drop the pin so people know where you Yeah, just, you know, don't do that. Don't go to a destination wedding on your own.

To start off, I was curious if you or anyone in your family have taken a DNA test before? And if so, have you found out anything interesting from that?

Nathalie Emmanuel portrays Evie in the new vampire thriller The Invitation, now exclusively in theaters.

What follows is Evie trying to adjust to her just dis covered relatives in the days before the big wed ding, and how her growing feelings of alienation and suspicion are a warning sign to the secrets being kept behind the locked doors of the estate.

Estaba en un programa llamado The Great Pottery Throw Down ¿Sabes qué?

Y yo dije, "No, no sabía dónde estaba".
