The ‘Atlantic, The Idea Issue’, July/August 2015 has an article all should read entitled “A World Without Work”, Derek Thompson, author. This article relates the experiences of Youngstown, Ohio after its steel industry was shut down on September 19. 1977 by U.S.Steel executives who decided it was no longer profitable. The U.S. Congress had previously adopted a policy of letting foreign steel products to enter the U.S. domestic market. Suddenly Youngstown became a community where not enough jobs existed for its labor force. The futuristic concept of a community which had no work became a reality here in Youngstown, Ohio. Today, many job-seekers have a hard time finding work. Work is essential in our culture because it gives one purpose, social status, determines who you associate with, and provides income. Try to recall when a family could live on one wage-earner’s income. Today, most families are twoincome families because that is what it takes to support one’s home, raise the kids, and life-style. In a community where work has been minimized by robots and automation, not having work (a job) would cause very high levels of stress and anxiety resulting in many mental health issues. Too many of us do not think about not having a job. Yet many firms are doing what is possible to eliminate jobs. The Safeway Store

has a ‘self-checkout counter’ which has eliminated employ a cashier and a bagger. The Golden Gate Bridge Authority eliminated all its tolltaker jobs. How do those former employees make a living? Cashiers, retail clerks, and drivers (of trucks, cabs, or personal vehicles) are the most common jobs. Google’s driver-less vehicles will eliminate ‘driving jobs’. Amazon’s drones may deliver goods to your doorstep. An Oxford study has forecasted that one-half of all jobs today may be eliminated by machines (automated robots) within 20 years. Today, capitalists (the top 1%) have almost eliminated union’s collective bargaining when negotiating a new labor contract. In fact, the U.S. Steel Corporation is now negotiating a new labor contract with the United Steelworkers Union. U.S. Steel negotiators are asking to modify the retirement benefits of retired steelworkers. My brother, Mike, a 78 year old retired steelworker, is very worried about the final contract terms. What does he do to compensate for lower health insurance benefits? This corporation is ‘reaching backwards’ to modify a retirement contract agreement which has benefited retirees. Is that ethical? Fair? Appropriate? The current climate is that the Republican administration in both Indiana and the U.S. Capital will do nothing to protect the current retirees. This is evidence that too many corporate executives are making decisions based on ‘bottom line’ (profit/loss) positions. Is it fair, moral or ethical to pay corporate executive 600 times what a working person earns with their know-how and experience? This challenging change deserves examina-

Author Derek Thompson provided the following anecdote: “In the 1950’s Henry Ford II, CEO of Ford (Motor Company) and Walter Reuther, head of the United Auto Workers union, were touring a new engine plant in Cleveland. Ford gestured to a fleet of machines and said, “Walter, how are you going to get these robots to pay union dues?” The union boss famously replied,”Henry, how are you going to get them to buy your cars?” The message of this anecdote is instructive. Capitalists today have seriously damaged the American consumer economy by not allowing the middle class to thrive. Their wages have been at the same level (or 10% less) of purchasing power since 1970’s. That means that American are purchasing less simply because they have no discretionary budget. Let’s decide to continue to be optimistic. We, The People” can collectively solve the challenges of living in a society and its economy where work is not necessary because of automation and robotics. Many will continue to work as artisans and craftsmen who produce customized services and products commissioned by clients. A revised concept of ownership coupled with stewardship (being your ‘brother/ sister’s keeper) will be needed. All must find ways to distribute essential resources. Today’s investment’s in robotics, automation and cybernetics must be influenced by the essential needs of all the rest of us. This article is ‘required reading’ because it is happening here in Silicon Valley. One thing is certain: We will never conceptualize this future community and its commerce until we begin to talk about its many manifestations. Can you imagine a society where ‘work’ (a job) is not required?

NAPS Whether you’re a newbie sending your kids to kindergarten or a grizzled veteran parent of a high school senior, school season can be an emotional time. Here’s a quick list of things you can do for more stress-free days at school. 10. Plan Lunches If you are buying school lunch, check the online menu to see what they’re serving. If you’re making lunch, have your kids help you plan a few in advance—they’ll like what they’re eating and feel involved in the process. 9. Watch for Bullying Many kids don’t want to admit they’re being bullied, so parents have to ask the right questions. Asking “How was your day?” usually elicits the “Fine” default response. Instead, ask questions like “Whom did you sit next to at lunch today?” Specific questions require more detailed answers, which gives you a clearer idea of how they are faring. 8. Visit Your School/Teacher Most schools have a “Back to School Night” for students and parents in the first weeks of school. If not, call the school and set something up.

7. Hand Washing Is Key The good news—your kids will be drinking from the cup of knowledge. The bad news? All the other kids are drinking from the same cup. Your best defense? Teach your kids to wash their hands frequently and cough into their elbows instead of their hands. 6. Find at Least One Friend in Class Just about everyone has Facebook, so use it during the first few weeks of school to ask other parents who have a child in the same grade which class their son or daughter is attending. This will alleviate the stress your child feels by not knowing anyone. 5. Create a Checklist Organization is a challenge, especially in the morning. Create a checklist of items (lunch, backpack, books, homework) and place it by the door; you and your child will be less likely to forget things. 4. Buy the Right School Supplies Most schools send precise lists of what kids need for each new grade level. If you don’t have this list, ask the teacher. Bonus tip—buy some extra supplies on the list for the classroom. Many
teachers spend their own money on school supplies, so they GREATLY appreciate when parents ease their burden with donated items. 3. Get Into a Routine Set a specific bedtime, eat breakfast early and get your children dressed in a fixed amount of time—they’ll be calm and on time for school. 2. Set the Tone It is understandable for parents to be stressed about school. But while it’s perfectly natural to be upset, try not to let your kids see your angst. They take their cues from you, so if you’re emotional and anxious about the start of school, they’ll follow suit. You can cry after they get on the bus, which brings us to… 1. Get a Box of Tissues If your child is young, you might need tissues after shedding tears about how fast he or she grew up. Parents of that second child might be using the tissues to dry their tears of joy at the thought of having a little bit of free time during the day. BPT Nearly one in three millennials have no money saved for retirement, and a quarter of millennials – people between the ages of 18 and 34 – report owing more money than they have currently saved, according to a survey released by the Indexed Annuity Leadership Council (IALC). “This year, millennials finally surpassed all other generations and now make up the largest share of our workforce, which makes it so concerning that such a large portion of these young people are astoundingly unprepared for retirement,” says IALC executive director Jim Poolman.

Still, out of all generations, millennials are also the most open to retirement savings options that protect against stock market fluctuations and offer the opportunity for growth. According to the survey, 52 percent of millennials showed interest in products like fixed indexed annuities that provide guaranteed lifetime income while ensuring the principal investment is never lost. “It’s no surprise that millennials, who entered the workforce after the tumultuous 2008 economic recession, are showing the most interest in products that can provide certainty against the unpredictability of the stock market,” Poolman says. “This certainty becomes even more

important as our retirement landscape continues shifting to a more pay-for-yourself era.” So, how can millennials with nothing saved for retirement get started? Poolman has some basic tips: 1. Remember, every penny counts When you’re young, you have time on your side, so put as much money aside as you can. This might mean skipping a night or two on the town or packing your lunch more often. While this doesn’t seem like much, making one or two small changes can add up to considerable savings. 2. Take free money
Consider contributing to your company’s 401(k) plan or any employer-sponsored available plan. Think of any plan your employer is willing to match as “free money.” 3. Balance your portfolio As a young professional, you have the luxury to put some of your money into high-risk investments since your retirement is seemingly far away. However, for the safety of

your future, it’s important to also consider adding more conservative savings products like health savings accounts or fixed indexed annuities that can provide much-needed balance to your retirement portfolio. 4. Start now Don’t wait. It’s crucial to start saving for retirement as early as you can. The earlier you start saving, the more
likely you are to meet your retirement goals. Even if you can only contribute 1 percent of your salary, anything is better than nothing, and it can add up quickly. The IALC offers online calculators that can help you see how much you should be saving (taking into account your age and your retirement goal) and whether your current retirement savings will be sufficient.

William Carr HEALTHINNOVATIONS Labor Day is here, and for many local employees here in San Jose that means backyard BBQs, family road trips and a respite from work. For some people, however, these usually enjoyable activities are hindered by hearing loss, a condition that affects more than 48 million people nationwide. Commonly associated with older Americans, hearing loss affects people of working age as well: about 1.1 billion young adults worldwide are at risk of hearing loss, according to a recent study by the World Health Organization. The growing prevalence of hearing loss is being spurred by an aging population and exposure to loud sounds, including the frequent use of earbuds that can over time contribute to noiseinduced hearing loss. Hearing loss has many consequences, affecting Americans personally and professionally. Approximately 60 percent of people with hearing loss are of working age. Left untreated, hearing loss can reduce earnings by as much as $30,000 a year, and people with this condition are nearly twice as likely to be unemployed as their peers who use hearing aids. According to a 2013 survey, 30 percent of employees said they suspect they

have a hearing problem but have not sought treatment. Hearing loss is especially common among employees exposed to loud noise levels at work, including professions such as military and law enforcement, construction, and agriculture. About 22 million employees nationwide are exposed to hazardous noise levels on the job, according to a recent report from the Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA). If you or a loved one is experiencing hearing loss, now is the time for treatment. Early signs of hearing loss include turning up the TV or radio to levels others consider too loud, having trouble hearing in noisy environments or difficulty hearing on the phone. Here are tips to improve communications at work place and at play: ·Before a meeting, request an agenda that will make it easier to follow the discussion. Ask for a meeting recap or partner with co-workers to share notes. ·Select a place at the table that enables you to see coworkers’ faces and watch lips to help enhance speech understanding. ·Rather than nodding along to a conversation you can’t follow, politely stop the discussion and ask the speaker to
rephrase what was said. ·If recommended, consider wearing hearing aids, which help people hear soft sounds and keep loud noises at a comfortable level. To help prevent hearing loss, here are some helpful tips: ·For people consistently exposed to noise, especially while on the job, consider options such as ear muffs or custom earplugs that offer significant protection. ·When attending sports events or music concerts, use ear protection such as inexpensive ear plugs that are available at pharmacies and other retail stores. ·Limit exposure to loud sounds – including music, lawn mowers and motorcycles – to no more than 20 minutes at a time. ·Follow the 60/60 rule: use earbuds for no more than 60 minutes at a time and at 60 percent of the device’s maximum volume. Preserving hearing health, or obtaining treatment if necessary, is crucial for Americans both in and out of the workforce. Following these tips will help people maintain their hearing health and, as a result, improve their overall health and ability to work. Acaba de terminar una gran cena familiar de fin de semana y se está preguntando qué hacer con los huesos del jamón y la carne asada, cuando llega trotando su gran perro labrador negro. Es difícil resistirse a esos ojos anhelantes de cachorro. Su veterinario le ha dicho que es una mala idea darle huesos a su perro, pero lo ha hecho en el pasado sin que le causara ningún daño. “Algunas personas piensan que está bien dar huesos grandes a los perros para que los mastiquen”, comenta Carmela Stamper, una veterinaria del Centro de Medicina Veterinaria (CVM) de la Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos (FDA). “Pero darle un hueso a su perro podría ocasionar una visita inesperada a su veterinario, una posible cirugía de emergencia o incluso la muerte de su mascota”. La FDA ha recibido alrededor de 35 reportes de mascotas enfermas a causa de huesos comestibles y siete reportes de problemas de otros productos caninos, como de huesos comestibles que se rompen cuando se retiran de su envoltura. Los reportes, enviados por dueños de mascotas y veterinarios, involucraron a unos 45 perros.

If you’re a fall recreation enthusiast, take some time to create a checklist of the items you’ll need to take care of before you dash off on your autumn adventures. Whether you’re planning a fall camping trip or simply hanging around at home, this season can be a bit unpredictable. Stay safe, comfortable and productive during the fall with these helpful tips: Make a plan. Fall is a busy season for everyone, so take a moment to map out your weeks and create a solid plan. You’re much more likely to fit in all your fun fall activities when you plan them according to your to-do list. From yard work to hunting trips, make a rough plan so you know exactly what you have going on each week. Do your research. If you’re going out and about this fall, educate yourself and become familiar with the local area. This will help you be aware of any surprises that might come up including poisonous plants, dangerous animals and bugs. It’s always a good idea to take a map and compass along, even if you will mostly be using a smart phone.

County residents experiencing acute mental illness will receive intensive community-based treatment and related services SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF – On Tuesday the County Board of Supervisors approved the selection of Telecare Corporation as the service provider for a Pay for Success project to improve stability and wellness of some of the County’s most severely mentally ill individuals through intensive outpatient treatment, case management, and supportive services. “Improving the stability and wellness of members of

our community who suffer from acute mental illness is a high priority for the County,” said President Dave Cortese, County of Santa Clara. Pay for Success is a funding model under which governments pay for services only if and when a service provider achieves clearly defined, measurable results. Pay for Success leverages upfront funding for service providers from the private sector and philanthropic foundations and rigorously measures the effectiveness of programs over time. The project will serve individuals who have frequent or extended stays in the County’s psychiatric emergency and in-
patient facilities and in other institutional settings, and will ensure these individuals are stabilized in less restrictive, community-based environments. “Telecare’s purpose, in every one of our programs, is to help people with serious mental illness to feel stronger, better, healthier, and more hopeful, not only with their mental illness, but in their lives,” said Faith Richie, Senior Vice President of Development at Telecare. “The Pay for Success model is particularly exciting because it brings an entirely new approach to collaboration to mental health care. It’s an investment in innovation whose primary goal is to
make a measurable impact in the lives of Santa Clara residents. We are honored to be part of this process.” The County and Telecare will now begin a multi-month project development process to finalize the parameters of the project, including identification of target outcomes for the services to be provided to individuals experiencing episodes of acute mental illness, development of an evaluation plan, and the engagement of

private investors. This is the County of Santa Clara’s second Pay for Success project. On August 14, 2015, the County announced the launch of Project Welcome Home, which aims to improve quality of life and stability of chronically homeless individuals through permanent supportive housing and other supportive services. The County of Santa Clara’s efforts to investigate and pur-
sue Pay for Success initiatives have been led by Third Sector Capital Partners, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating America’s transition to a performancedriven social sector. These efforts were initiated through a grant from The Health Trust and Step Up Silicon Valley, a project of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County. The Sobrato Foundation and The James Irvine Foundation have also provided critical philanthropic support.

If Operation Ceasefire is implemented, said police Lt. Rich Lawhead, it would train recent parolees to intervene after a shooting and use their street cred to calm the situation.
“The key components to keep people out of the cycle of violence are still missing,” she said. “We need job training, housing and opportunities for youth.”
“They communicate: ‘Hey, you know, don’t go out and retaliate on this. Let the police do their job’,” he said. “We need to get some of our youngsters to find a different way to settle their arguments than with a gun.”
Homicides in San Bernardino skyrocketed in recent years but are down dramatically so far in 2015 something the police department credits to better community outreach.
Michael Friedrich, a communications specialist for the National Network for Safe Communities at John Jay College, said the program focuses on the tiny percent-
age of residents who commit most of the violent crimes. “It gives this active population a targeted message: We care about you. You are part of our community but the violence has to stop. The next group that drops a body is going to face consequences,” he said. Operation Ceasefire has successfully reduced violence in dozens of cities across the country including Boston and Chicago. California cities participating include Los Angeles, Oakland, Fresno, Long Beach, and most notably Stockton, which saw a 43 percent drop in homicides between 1998 and 2001.

Nonstop Service Between London and San Jose Begins in May San Jose CALIFORNIA Mayor Sam Liccardo announced Wednesday that British Airways will begin nonstop daily service from San José International Airport to London Heathrow beginning May 4, 2016. Joined by Simon Brooks, Sr. Vice President of Operations for British Airways and Carl Guardino, CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group the historic announcement is the first such nonstop service and its estimated economic impact is over $100 million annually. This announcement continues the great economic momentum that San José has experienced in 2015. “San Jose and Silicon Valley tech companies have committed to San José Mineta International being the airport of choice, and have expressed strong support of a direct flight to London for several years,” said Mayor Sam Liccardo. “The British Airways announcement to launch service from San José to London Heathrow will be well received by both business and leisure travelers in our region. I thank British Airways for its significant investment in San José.” London is a priority route for Silicon Valley business and residents and demand for nonstop service is estimated to be approximately 250,000 annual passengers, with a connecting market potential beyond London of around 900,000 annual passengers. The Silicon Valley Leadership Group, Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, and other local business leaders were instrumental in working with the Mayor and airport staff to attracting British Airways. This historic economic announcement comes on the heels of economic victories for San José. June saw the first flight from San José to Beijing, Apple recently purchased over 40 acres of land for an R&D campus, and thousands of football fans will come to town during the Super Bowl as San José will host the NFC Champions. San José has also seen continued growth in the downtown core (Xactly, Intaact, Dice), while continuing to attract global tech companies to North San José and Edenvale (Apple, BAE Systems, Jabil Circuits). These recent additions will bring hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in investment that will benefit the residents of San José for decades to come.

Norma De la Vega UNIVERSIDAD DE CALIFORNIA Un nuevo año escolar comienza y padres e hijos están preparados para el inicio de clases. En muchas escuelas, además del enfoque en los libros y el aprendizaje en clase, se han implementado programas que integran los huertos escolares, y la tierra está lista y fértil para que los estudiantes aprendan de manera práctica acerca de ciencias, lenguaje, historia, medioambiente, nutrición y cuidado de la salud. “Yo creo que el aprendizaje basado en un huerto es una excelente opción”, indica Sheri Zidenberg-Cherr, experta en nutrición de Extensión Cooperativa de la Universidad de California y codirectora del Centro para la Nutrición en las Escuelas de UC Davis. Junto con Jennifer Morris, estudiante de posgrado en el Departamento de Nutrición de UC Davis, y en colaboración con el Departamento de Educación de California, las investigadoras desarrollaron Nutrition to Grow On (La nutrición para crecer) un plan de estudio que cumple con los estándares escolares y que se enfoca en el aprendizaje basado en huertos escolares para alumnos en los grados del 4º al 6º. Nutrition to Grow On está diseñado para enseñar a los niños y sus familias acerca de la nutrición y fomentar su preferencia por alimentos sanos como las frutas y verduras. Cada una de las 9 lecciones se enfoca en una actividad en el huerto; el plan de estudios se puede descargar en inglés, libre de costo.

El porcentaje de niños obesos de 6 a 11 años aumentó del 7% en 1980 a casi el 18% en el 2012. Asimismo, el porcentaje de adolescentes obesos entre los 12 y 19 años aumentó de 5% a casi el 21% en el mismo período. “El tema del que oímos
hablar es la epidemia de obesidad infantil, y francamente sé que los directores de servicios de nutrición y maestros en el sistema escolar están probablemente cansados de escuchar sobre la obesidad infantil. Y quizás desean escuchar más acerca de comportamientos saludables, y qué podemos hacer para lograrlos, no solo excluyendo ciertos alimentos de los salones de clase o de donde se reúnen a almorzar, sino qué hacer para que nuestros niños disfruten de otros tipos de alimentos y bebidas saludables”, explica Zidenberg-Cherr. Según la experta, las escuelas son el mejor lugar para promover los hábitos alimenticios saludables porque ahí confluyen todas las personas que son fundamentales en la vida de los menores: los padres, los maestros y los amigos. Además, es una gran ventaja que los niños y sus padres puedan aprender durante el horario escolar ya que las familias están muy ocupadas y es difícil que tengan tiempo para actividades adicionales. Zidenberg-Cherr enfatiza que el primer paso para adoptar buenos hábitos alimenticios es mejorar los conocimientos sobre nutrición y crear un entorno saludable que los fomente, y esa es precisamente la misión de los huertos escolares. “Lo que es importante es que [los huertos escolares]

Santa Clara County CALIFORNIA On Tuesday the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a resolution opposing the Phillips 66 Company Rail Spur Extension and Crude Oil Unloading Facility Project (Rail Spur Project) in San Luis Obispo County. The Rail Spur Project would allow for up to five trains per week, each carrying over 2 million gallons of heavy, highsulfur crude oil, to pass through Santa Clara County on the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) rail line. Crude oil is highly toxic and combustible, and the possibility of oil spills, fires, and explosions poses a grave public safety threat to the region. The proposed rail route leading to the Santa Maria Refinery from the north travels through Milpitas, downtown San Jose, and then parallel to Highway 101 through Morgan Hill and Gilroy. A Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) released on October 10, 2014 identified the main hazard of the Rail Spur Project as potential accidents along the UPRR rail line resulting in oil spills, fires, and explosions. With roughly 200,000 residents, as well as hundreds of businesses, schools, government buildings, and venues within a one-mile radius of the proposed oil train route, the risk of oil train accidents is substantial. “This would set a dangerous precedent for other oil companies to follow suit, and it poses an unacceptable risk to our community,” said Supervisor Cindy Chavez. “That is why today, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors joins over 40 other public agencies and elected officials throughout the state in expressing its strong opposition to the Rail Spur Project.” According to the U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), the 1.15 million gallons of oil that spilled in train accidents in the United States in 2013 is more than all the oil spilled in the previous 38 years combined. In addition to major public safety concerns, the project poses significant threats to the environment. The impact of the oil trains would lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and hazardous waste in the region. The high levels of sulfur dioxide in crude oil would also cause long-term damage to local groundwater and farm lands. “Our region is not lacking in access to crude oil, and there are already safer methods of transport already in use,” said Supervisor Ken Yeager. “Moving such a volatile product by train through heavily populated areas is just too risky. Our public safety is more important than corporate profits.”
Earl Ofari Hutchinson NEW AMERICA MEDIA There was a moment in the aftermath of the Katrine debacle ten years ago when the message that there are a lot of poor in New Orleans and America who are routinely ignored, neglected, and reviled got through. In that very fleeting moment there was a torrent of new studies and reports that flowed out on poverty in America, especially black poverty. Legions of state and local officials made flowery references to the plight of the poor. This was all accompanied by candid media shots of and even interviews with families trapped in dire poverty. Then President Bush even upped the federal ante on spending on relief and reconstruction in New Orleans. But that was a decade ago. That fleeting moment when the plight of the poor grabbed the national spotlight was just that, very fleeting. Five months before the decade remembrance of Katrina The Data Center, a New Orleans based research organization, issued a report that told just how fleeting that moment that paid attention to poverty was. It found that not only were just as many children living in poverty in New Orleans today as at the time of Katrina but that the percentage in poverty was nearly 20 percent higher than the national average. This despite the sharp drop in the city’s population, and child population. In 2005, the desperate scenes of families scrounging for food, clothing items and

other necessities in the aftermath of Katrina rammed home the painful message that rampant poverty in New Orleans was a hard fact of life for thousands. Those scenes forced policy makers and the much of the media to finally acknowledge that brutal fact. It also forced the even more painful admission that of then nearly one out of three New Orleans residents who lived below the poverty level, the majority of who were black. It also forced one more painful admission and that was that New Orleans was not an aberration. Nationally, according to Census figures then, blacks remained at the bottom of the economic totem pole. They had the lowest media income of any group. Bush was widely and rightly blamed for initially dithering, delaying and even denying the extent of the Katrina crisis. He took much deserved heat that his war and economic policies did much to further fuel the crisis. His tax cuts redistributed billions to the rich and corporations. The Iraq war drained billions from cash starved job training, health and education programs. Corporate downsizing, outsourcing, and industrial flight further fueled America’s poverty crisis. This all happened on Bush’s watch. But a seemingly indifferent and clueless Bush was not the sole culprit. Even during the Clinton era economic boom, the unemployment rate for young black males was double, and in some parts of the country, triple that of white males.
During those years, state and federal cutbacks in job training and skills programs, the brutal competition for low and semi skilled service and retail jobs from immigrants, and the refusal of many employers to hire those with criminal records have further hammered black communities and added to the Great Depression era high unemployment numbers among young blacks. The tale of poverty was more evident in the nearly one million blacks behind bars, the HIV/AIDS rampage in black communities, the sea of black homeless persons, and the raging drug and gang violence that rips apart many black communities. Then there are the children. One third of America’s poor are children. The Children’s Defense Fund in its periodic reports routinely finds that nearly 1 million black children live not in poverty, but in extreme poverty. Bush’s exit from the White House in 2009 didn’t change things for the poor. The poverty numbers have steadily risen for during the decade after Katrina. There has been no sign of a turnaround. For that to happen, there would have to be a massive commitment of funds to job, training and education programs, and greater tax incentives for businesses to train and hire the poor. That will take an even greater active national lobbying effort by Congressional Democrats, civil rights, and anti-poverty groups. Unfortunately, the poor have been too nameless, faceless, and vast in numbers to target with a sustained lobbying campaign.
President Obama’s initiatives on raising the minimum wage, expansion of health care, and job creation, and small business development, have been welcome and much needed. But these initiatives have been fought tooth and nail by an obstructionist GOP. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has gone much further and put forth solid proposals that frontally challenge wealth and income inequality in the nation. But other than Sanders, and the passing references that Obama and Democratic presidential rival Hillary

Clinton make to the gaping inequality, there is still no national will to plop the plight of the poor squarely on the nation’s policy table.
millions in New Orleans and America grow poorer, more desperate, and greater in number, will remain unheard.
There’s not much sign that this will change. In a hotly contested presidential election year, the pack of GOP presidential candidates will claw to outdo each other to paint any initiatives by Democrats to ramp up spending on job, health and education programs as wasteful, and self-defeating. And millions will believe them. This assures that a decade after Katrina the message that

Austin TEXAS Los Lonely Boys’ music is often called Tex-Mex or rocken-español, but it is really much more textured than those labels imply. The documentary has lots of live footage of Los Lonely Boys in concert and they stand out as some of the films best moments. The DVD also contains 2 bonus film clips. Their father, Ringo Garza Sr., was a member of another sibling band, the Falcones, which played throughout southern Texas in the ’70s and ’80s. When that group disbanded, Ringo Sr. went solo, and recruited his three young sons to back him. The family relocated to Nashville in the ’90s, and soon Henry, Jojo and Ringo Jr. began writing and performing their own material as a trio. If you think it’s too expensive to keep buying phones and you want to top off a burner phone with new minutes using your credit card, be aware that it is no longer a burner phone (it has a MAC address, and you’ve just associated a credit card with it). Burner phones and associated minutes should be purchased for cash (green dollar bills) and discarded after use – burned!
Shelly Palmer Fake women, fake privacy, real hack – that’s the way my eulogy for Ashley Madison’s IPO would start. Fake women, because the ratio of female names to male names in the hacked database dump is skewed extremely male. Fake privacy, because everyone now has access to Ashley Madison’s private database. Real hack, because the hackers have actually ruined people’s lives. CNBC’s Jon Fortt said the Impact Team (the people who claimed credit for the hack) committed the “politest possible hack,” because more nefarious hackers would have kept the data secret and blackmailed people with it. He’s right, of course. As bad as this is, it could have been a lot worse. Our current law enforcement infrastructure was not built to investigate 30 million simultaneous blackmail cases. According to Business Insider, some
criminals have already tried to use the information from the Ashley Madison hack for blackmail. But as Jon pointed out, there’s no reason to pay the blackmailers; the information is already publicly available. What if it weren’t? Promiscuous Login Before Facebook, Twitter and Google login tools (say, three to five years ago) most people were all too happy to enter their data into any website that asked for it. Websites loved to collect registration data – it was (and still is) important for customer relationship management (CRM) as well as for financial reporting. How Many Websites Have Your Data? It’s a reasonable question. Ten, 20, 50, 100? How many of them do you still use? How many of them are still in business? What credit card numbers did you expose? What personal information could be aggregated? If you are an average user, the answer is simple: all of it. Attack Surfaces There is no way to go back
and fix all of this. We are all vulnerable to attack from places we have long forgotten. In some cases, hackers will be breaking into the equivalent of an abandoned public park. No harm, no foul. But in other cases, sensitive information (such as the data exposed from Ashley Madison) will be made public. It’s a virtual certainty. What to Do About It Back in May 2011, I wrote a book entitled “Overcoming the Digital Divide: How to Use Social Media and Digital Tools to Reinvent Yourself and Your Career.” There’s a section about email that was true then and it’s even truer today. You need no less than four separate email addresses: work email, personal email, junk email and supersecret email. Work and personal are self-explanatory. Junk email is for website and app sign-ins that require double opt-in or verification, but you never use it for anything else. It doesn’t need a spam filter – everything in the account is basically spam. As for your super-secret email address … I’ll let you
decide what content may be associated with it. I’ll just remind you that a secret is secret only if you keep it to yourself – once you share it with anyone, it’s no longer secret. If you want to take this to the next step, it may be time for a burner phone.
Privacy Should Not Be Confused with Anonymity Eliot Spitzer sent a private wire transfer to pay for his hookers; he did not make an anonymous one. If you need a credit/debit card to transact web business, buy a Visa or MasterCard gift card or a gift debit card with cash and use it for the single transaction. This may seem like too much effort, but some sites only accept credit/debit cards, and when you want to secure your privacy, you need to use tools that enable anonymity. A More Practical Solution If you’re going to do some “underbelly of society” stuff, take the time to learn how to do it. If you are not willing to learn to keep your private life private, then don’t do

any of it online. Repeat after me: “There is no reasonable expectation of privacy in the 21st Century.” Go ahead, say it out loud – say it until you believe it. In practice, you should become expert at using your four separate email accounts. I really would not worry about credit card data – that is a problem for the issuing bank, not for you. Social Security numbers are also not a big deal. (Some people and organizations that scare people for a living will tell you otherwise.) You need to be personally targeted for that kind of identity hack to really have an impact on how you spend your day. One Last Thing Today is a great day to ask your IT department, your CIO or your CTO to give you an status update about your security and business continuity plans. What would your day be like if you were the CEO of Ashley Madison? It’s an important question to ask. Who would be called first? Who would speak to the press? Who would deal with XYZ? Quakes run shutout streak to three games; Wondolowski, Salinas net goals WASHINGTON, D.C. The San Jose Earthquakes scored early in the first half and notched a second goal early in the second half on the way to a 2-0 victory over D.C. United at RFK Stadium Saturday night. San Jose has now won three games in a row and outscored opponents 8-0 over that stretch. Chris Wondolowski and Shea Salinas scored the goals for the Quakes and David Bingham recorded his ninth shutout of the season. For the second straight match, San Jose burst out of the gate with an early goal. Shaun Francis received a pass from Quincy Amarikwa in the box and his low shot was parried by United goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra. The rebound fell to Fatai Alashe, but his shot was deflected to Wondolowski just outside the six-yard box. He calmly slotted the ball past Dykstra to the far post for his 105th career goal, moving him past Dwayne De Rosario into sole possession of sixth all-time in goals in MLS history. The Quakes defense held firm for the rest of

the half to send San Jose to the locker room with a 1-0 advantage. Marvell Wynne broke up a D.C. counter attack in the 16th minute to prevent a goal and Clarence Goodson and Victor Bernardez cleared a number of threatening corners and crosses to keep D.C. off the board. Just seven minutes into the second half, San Jose doubled the lead after some great work from Quincy Amarikwa. After receiving the ball at midfield, he dribbled past one defender and then ran 30 yards to the edge of the box before finding Salinas to his left. Salinas curled a right-footed shot to the back post for his second goal of the year for a 2-0 lead. Bingham came up huge in the latter stages of the match with an impressive stop on Davy Arnaud. The D.C. United midfielder received a pass in space on the left side of the box with only Bingham to beat. Bingham rushed off his line, made himself big and deflected Arnaud’s shot. Goodson recovered and cleared the loose ball out of danger to preserve the clean sheet. San Jose heads back to Avaya Stadium for the first of four straight home games on Friday, Aug. 28. The Quakes host the LA Galaxy in the final installment of the California Clasico, presented by Advocare. The match kicks off at 8 p.m. and will air live on UniMas, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose CALIFORNIA San Jose Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson and Head Coach Peter DeBoer announced today that Steve Spott will serve as the second assistant coach on DeBoer’s staff. Spott, 47,
Prior to his time with the Toronto organization, Spott coached in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with both the Kitchener Rangers and the Plymouth Whalers. He was hired by Plymouth in 1997 and spent four seasons on DeBoer’s staff as an assistant/associate coach, before both he and DeBoer joined Kitchener in 2001. Spott spent his first seven seasons in Kitchener as an assistant coach under DeBoer, helping lead the Rangers to the 2003 Memorial Cup championship.
Spott was hired as Kitchener’s head coach and general manager in 2008 following DeBoer’s departure to the NHL. In five seasons, Spott guided the Rangers to a record of 187-121-32, four playoff berths and two trips to the Western Conference Final. Spott also boasts significant international coaching experience. In the summer of 2008, he was an assistant coach with Team Canada at the under-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament, helping Canada win the gold medal. In 2010, he won a silver medal as an assistant coach with Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Saskatchewan. The following year he led Canada to a gold medal as head coach of the under-18 team at the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in the Czech Republic. Spott was also appointed head coach of Team Canada at the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championships in Ufa, Russia. During his playing career, Spott registered 148 points (75 goals, 73 assists) in 121 games as a forward at Colgate University. He would go on to play 20 games for the Newmarket Saints of the AHL before finishing his playing career with Heerenveen in the Netherlands.
