Hopefully, each and every resident citizen is planning to vote at your precinct's poll or by 'VOTE BY MAIL' in the coming “Midterm Election” scheduled for Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

National Voter Registration Day occurred on Wednesday, September 26th. I did not know this until I received emails from several political advocacy organizations. House member Zoe Lofgren (Democrat; CA-19) who was first elected to represent San Jose, CA in 1995. Zoe is chairwoman of the 36-member CA delegation (the largest of any state) and merits being re-elected.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (Democrat, SF) is promoting THE BLUE WAVE needed to have a Democratic Party Majority in the House of Representatives as well as the U.S. Senate. This Midterm election outcome is critical if the checks and balances on President Trump is to be re-established. According to Zoe's email, “The Blue Wave is real; Democrats may win back the House of Representatives, but only if Democrats “Get Out Their Voters” (GOTV) on November 6, 2018. Consider why you should vote.

First of all, your vote will express your personal values and aspirations for yourself, your kids and neighbors.

Secondly, I do not believe that public policy decisions need to be made using only business bottom line logic. Capitalism favors the concentration of wealth which becomes viewed as personal property.

There is a need to include 'Good Samaritan social stewardship' which sustains those who cannot make it on their own or are severely disabled or handicappped. I also contend that this nation's natural resources need to be developed and distributed in a manner which

meets social needs and achieves the greatest social good. Public education and universal health care need to be accessible. This nation and its society need informed skilled minds who serve the community.

Health care services need to be accessible without sustaining a profitable health insurance industry in addition to the usual and customary costs of licensed professional services delivery.

I can think of no industry which has been more subsidized by federal funds than health care.

Its community clinics, hospitals, training facilities, and basic research centers all receive federal grants. Much public health research is first funded by National Science Foundation or National Institutes of Health as examples.

Their basic research performed at academic institutions developed the scientific information which preceded capitalistic monetization (e.g., organ transplant capability).

Companies need to pay their fair share of taxes especially now that the Supreme Court had ruled them to be individuals who speak with their money.

Republican ideologues, when elected officials, have curtailed collective bargaining rights of unions and have done nothing to ensure a living wage scale which enables the working class to have sufficient funds to make ends meet.

The Republican focus is profit oriented and creation of a wealthy oligarchy such as the one from which Mr. Trump experienced since birth. Trump cannot deal with poverty because he has never experienced its challenges. He and his ilk simply never think about those 100 million working class folks except when their consumerism generated volume and profits.

The Democratic Party promotes progressive programs which sustain the largest number of

American residents. Social Security and universal health care accessible to all are goals. A fair judicial court system is another goal. Fair wages for both genders are an aspiration.

The Democratic Party tends to deal with a broader distribution of wealth while still caring for those who are homeless, destitute, handicapped or disadvantaged.

Simply stated, Democratic Party has initiated and sustained more programs which provide a hand up to those who do not have the means to initiate upward mobility efforts without public program assistance.

Since the Trump Administration was installed, many federal regulations pertaining to health, work site safety, access to safe drinking water, and sustaining national monuments and Parks... all these have been initiated and sustained. All their public policy actions reflect the ideology that no governance, its monitoring and regulation is the best for private business. The reality is that no government results in a wild west ruthless society where those with guns prevail.

This particular Midterm Election is very important because of the many controversial social and public policy issues which the Trump Administration has done or is proposing to do.

The working class of America whose members are registered to vote need to seriously consider the following question: “Are you better off with a Republican or a Democratic presence in the White House and U.S. Congress? What follows is a list of things the Trump Administration has addressed during the first half of a 4-year term: a) Cuts to Social Security Programs b) Cuts to health care programs (Medicare/Medicaid) c) Continues and expands corporate welfare d) Is packing the Federal Judicial

System with ultra-conservative appointees like Brett Kavanaugh. e) Cuts to education and training programs (including school lunches) f ) Ineffective response and follow-up to wild fires & hurricane disasters (Puerto Rico) g) Appointed too many Whitemales reflecting white supremacy ideology. h) Is allegedly the most corrupt, incompetent, and biased administration ever i) Initiated foreign trade tariffs which raises prices consumers pay j) Has treated America's adversaries well while insulting America's allies k) Has withdrawn from nuclear arms control treaties unilaterally, resulting in decreasing America's influence on nuclear arms control. l) Has not stood up to internet hacking being done by national adversaries such as Russia, China, and others. m) Has reduced National Monuments and Parks to enable exploitation by special interests. n) Ignores Global Climate Change in order to bring back fossil fuels (crude oil & coal) o) Totally neglected the national infrastructure (roads, bridges, viaducts, harbors, airports, air traffic control, etc.).

Your choices are limited - It is time to re-instate the U.S. Constitutional checks and balances form of participatory democratic governance. So, vote accordingly to have a Democratic Majority in both the House and the Senate.

It is the only alternative at this juncture which 'We, The People' have, and it works only if we all vote. Know that those who did not vote in the 2016 Presidential election helped Trump win the electoral college majority vote which unexpectedly elected him as our current President. It's time to reinstate checks and balances.

Cuando parecía empezar a tocar fondo la guerra del presidente Donald Trump contra los inmigrantes indocumentados, su administración decidió intensificar las hostilidades a menos de dos meses de las elecciones, con una iniciativa draconiana contra los migrantes legales que busca negar la residencia permanente a aquellos que reciben beneficios públicos, como ayuda alimentaria o seguro de salud a través de Medicaid.

La propuesta no está escrita aún sobre piedra, toda vez que requiere por ley un periodo de consulta de 60 días. Pero si se implementa, podría afectar a por lo 382,000 inmigrantes legales, de acuerdo

con la contabilidad de la administración, muchos de los cuales son, por supuesto, madres y padres de menores de edad que son ciudadanos estadounidenses.

En el colmo de las políticas públicas sobre migración, el Departamento de Seguridad Interna (DHS) obligaría a todos los inmigrantes que busquen convertirse en Residentes Legales Permanentes (LPR), estarían obligados a demostrar no sólo que no han recibido o no reciben beneficios públicos, sino que deben convencer a las autoridades “que no es probable que los reciban”. Increíble.

Bajo la regla, será el DHS definirá los parámetros de lo que significa ser una “carga pública” para la administración Trump. El criterio puede ser en términos de dólares o

Como es natural, la propuesta ha desatado el unánime rechazo de organizaciones defensoras de los inmigrantes, de los niños y de los latinos, aunque la propuesta afecta a migrantes legales de todos los colores. El plan de Trump es visto como un descarado

intento por apelar a los más bajos instintos de su base más conservadora, ignorante y prejuiciosa.

Pero los grupos opuestos a la iniciativa buscan pasar de la indignación a la acción. Su plan es presentar mas de 100,000 comentarios en contra, una vez que se abra el periodo de consulta, además de que están explorando una efectiva estrategia legal para impugnarla en los tribunales de Estados Unidos.

Si la intención del presidente Donald Trump era arrojarles un hueso a sus seguidores y entusiasmarlos a salir a votar en noviembre, qué mejor paradoja que su plan genere lo opuesto: entusiasmo electoral entre todos los votantes que rechazan no sólo sus políticas migratorias, sino la complaciente actitud de los republicanos en el Congreso.

Despite rising college costs, a clear majority of families believe higher education is wellworth the investment, and most students and parents are willing to stretch themselves financially to make it happen, according to a new study.

The national study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, “How America Values College 2018,” found that 66 percent of college-going families believe they are getting a good value for the price they’re paying for college, and 20 percent say college is worth every penny.

Even those willing to stretch financially are taking deliberate, resourceful and concrete steps to make college more affordable.

Forty-five percent of college students are working year-round to earn money for school, and 37 percent of students live at home with parents or relatives to save on housing costs.

While many families are making such significant strides to prepare for college costs and save money, Quinlan points out that there’s still work to do when it comes to equipping more families with tools and information needed to create a plan to pay for college.

Planning, and ultimately paying for college also involves terms and jargon that may leave many scratching their heads.

Indeed, when asked a series of true or false questions about certain paying-for-college terminology, lingering misconceptions persisted: 42 percent of families mistakenly believe work-study funds are automatic, more than 20 percent believe “free tuition” means college is free and 19 percent believe the sticker price is what college will cost them.

"Put a freeze on your account, that way a criminal cannot access your credit report, set up new accounts, order replacement cards, commit all types of crime, using your name," Johnson said.

Johnson noted that kids are now the number-one victim group of identity theft, so it's a good idea to freeze their credit reports as well.

Experts also warn of so-called phishing attacks, which are unsolicited requests to update your account information. These emails may look like they're coming from a site you use, but are really attempts to get your personal information.

Johnson said some people avoid setting up online access to their accounts, assuming it is safer. But, he said, establishing online access yourself makes it harder for a criminal to impersonate you.

"Making sure that you are set up online for your bank, for your merchant, for Social Security. That makes it hard for a criminal to come in and set up that information in your name," he said. "Because when a criminal does that and you have not done that, the criminal then looks like the more legitimate owner."

COVERED CALIFORNIA: SHOP AND SAVE FOR 2019

“Covered California’s marketplace fosters competition that puts consumers in the driver’s seat and gives them the power to shop and save,” Covered California Executive Director Peter V. Lee said. “Health care is local, and the price of coverage varies by health plan and region, so consumers will be encouraged to shop when they renew this fall.”

The most recent data shows there are more than 58,000 Covered California members in the county, and depending on their ZIP code, Santa Clara County consumers will once again be able to choose plans from Anthem, Blue Shield, Kaiser Permanente and Valley Health Plans.

Despite the recent federal decisions aimed at changing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, all 11 insurers currently serving Covered California consumers across the state will return for the 2019 coverage year. The exchange’s competitive marketplace continues to promote choice, with 96 percent of consumers being able to choose from two insurers or more and 82 percent of consumers having three or more choices.

The 2019 Covered California rates and plans have been announced, and there is plenty of good news for consumers in Santa Clara County.

First, the average overall rate increase for existing consumers in the county who renew

the plan they have now is 6.3 percent, which is below the statewide average rate change of 8.7 percent.

Better still, consumers can bring their rate increase down to an average of -12.2 percent, meaning consumers will pay less for their premium then they did in 2018 if they shop around and switch to the lowest-cost plan in the same metal tier.

Consumers can find out what they will pay for their 2019 coverage starting during the renewal period in October, when they can visit Covered California’s website at www.CoveredCA.com and begin using the Shop and Compare Tool for 2019.

Consumers who do not have health insurance can begin signing up for 2019 coverage on Oct. 15. Others with special qualifying life events, like losing their coverage or moving, can enroll

People who are interested in signing up should go to www.CoveredCA.com where they can get help to enroll. When you enter a grocery store, you're suddenly faced with thousands of options. You want to get the staples you need and you want the best nutrition for your family, but it's easy to get overwhelmed. How do you know what's your best choice?

"Options like brown versus vitamin-enriched white bread, or, grade A versus AA eggs can cause confusion for even savvy shoppers," says Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner, winner of the hit primetime ABC television show My Diet Is Better Than Yours. "With so many choices it's difficult to know what's what."

Blatner revels the truth about some of the most common myths and misconceptions of grocery store staples to streamline trips and ensure you’re bringing home the most nutritious options.

Bread Many people believe the darker the bread, the healthier it is, causing them to skip labels and grab a brown loaf on the go. The problem is, just because bread is brown doesn't mean it's whole grain. That color could be achieved through caramel coloring.

"What you see doesn't tell the whole story, so it's important to look at labels to get the facts," says Blatner. "Whole grain and sprouted grain are always good bread choices for better nutrition. It's also important to pay attention to sugar content.

There are many great options available with 0 grams of sugar.”

Eggs Egg-grading systems were created by the USDA to mark interior and exterior quality of eggs. Many people ignore this system and simply choose eggs based on appearance or price. To get the best nutrition, buy from a producer that has its own quality standards that go above and beyond USDA requirements.

Produce The produce section is one of the healthiest places in the grocery store, but the notion that the misters are there to make items look good and add water weight so they cost more at checkout is a myth. In reality, that water helps ensure fruits and vegetables stay fresh, especially items that could wilt, like lettuce.

"Give items a good shake to get rid of water weight," suggests Blatner. "And remember to always rinse fresh produce well once you're home to clean the surface of any dirt and bacteria. The mist at the store isn't meant to clean, only to help maintain freshness."

When fresh fruits aren't available, she reminds people to look for frozen alternatives, noting many frozen options are picked at the peak of freshness and flash frozen to capture high nutrient content.

The best frozen varieties are those without added sauces or seasonings.

"When you know the truth, you are empowered to make smart decisions while you shop so you can get superior products with superior nutrition," says Blatner. "Then you can have fun making tasty recipes your family will devour."

REPORT: GOLDEN STATE'S NEW PARENTS LACK SUFFICIENT SUPPORT

"Support in housing and more affordable child care options, more flexible work situations and help with college tuition is an especially important support for young parents," Hardy said.

Hardy praised state lawmakers for recently injecting $158 million into a program that sends nurses to visit families of newborns, but she thinks it should be expanded further. The report said kids would benefit if authorities lowered the age limits on the state and federal Earned Income Tax Credits - something that would help many young parents afford child support.

Rosa Maria Castaneda, senior associate with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, said fathers play a critical role in children's

development, but they are often left out of programs that support young families.

"They want to be involved in their children's lives. However, they're less likely to be supported through many of our programs and policies to be able to be involved and to be able to provide for their children," Castaneda said. "They are really neglected. We should support their involvement."

The report also advocated raising the minimum wage nationwide and boosting young adults' access to higher education and job-training programs. An estimated 281,000 Californians between 18 and 24 have children, 82 percent of which are people of color.

Annie E. Casey Foundation.

The study showed that nationwide 3.4 million kids have young parents - who have to transition to adulthood, careers, self-sufficiency and parenthood all at the same time. Kelly Hardy, senior managing director with the nonprofit Children Now, said there are many ways the government could help lift these families out of poverty.

Looking back on my journey of self-reinvention, I think about that moment in my life when it was all about surviving rather than thriving.

Growing up, my family faced many hardships, which required me to step up at a young age and help my mother raise my younger siblings. While it was incredibly difficult, my love for my family exceeds any pain that we went through, and it moves me to see how proud they are of what I have accomplished.

Ever since I became a father of three, my dreams have shifted a bit. I can say wholeheartedly that my kids are my biggest motivator. Everything I do is for them, to raise them with a purpose and desire to make an impact in whatever they decide to be.

I feel a similar shift in work culture as well, with families integrating into

the modern workplace in a way that they're no longer perceived as external, but rather instrumental support for an individual's success. I've not only been encouraged to be but also embraced as my true authentic self, which in my case, is as much a father as it is a Senior Program Manager.

If I had to give a word of advice to the next generation of Latinos, I'd point out the lessons I've had to learn along the way. Specifically, opportunities aren't necessarily geographically bound - you can always find them as long as you are looking for them.

Today, serving as the chair of HOLA, Microsoft's employee resource group for the Latinx community, I have a chance to give back and inspire others every day in the same way that I was.

Actriz de la obra “On Your Feet!” habla sobre la historia de la producción que nos muestra la vida de Gloria Estefan ¿Cuanto tiene que te graduaste?

Yo me gradué hace tres años. ¿Esta la primera producción de Broadway que haz hecho?

Si, la primera vez hice un show off-Broadway por un año, era el como una parodia de “Hamilton”, se llama “Spamilton”. ¿Cómo fue esa experiencia?

Fue súper porque el show es como comedia, o sea que aprendí bastante y, fue súper chévere.

Era un teatro muy pequeño, tenía la gente allí enfrente tuyo y si estabas haciendo algo y no estaba funcionando era muy obvio porque la gente las tenias súper cerca, y igual si estabas triunfando haciendo a la gente reír era como un sentimiento muy lindo. ¿Me puedes hablar un poco de que se trata la historia de la producción en la que estás ahora, “On Your Feet!”?

La historia de la artista Gloria Estefan es una llena de trabajo duro y el logro de sueños en este país. “On Your Feet!” es el nombre de el espectáculo basada en esta historia, que llegara a San Jose del 9 al 14 de octubre.

Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de hablar con una de las actrices de la obra, Claudia Yanez, cuyos roles incluyen a la hermana menor de Gloria, Rebecca, y a Gloria misma.

Originalmente de Venezuela, Yanez empezó en el teatro hace unos cuantos años, y desde su graduación de Boston Conservatory, donde estudió teatro musical, ha llegado a participar en esta producción que, según ella, es un reflejo importante de los latinos en todo el país.

Hola Claudia. Muchas gracias por tomar un tiempo para hablar sobre “On Your Feet”.

Para empezar, ¿Me puedes hablar de tus experiencias de niñez y cómo es que llegaste a estar interesada en el teatro?

Yo crecí en Miami. Nací en Venezuela, y viví ahi hasta los 7 años. Mi papá era músico en Venezuela o sea yo crecí con música al rededor siempre. Me moví a Miami y empecé a cantar desde muy chiquita en la iglesia, y cosas así. Después cuando tenia como 17 años empecé a cantar coros con Jon Secada con mi hermana, yo tengo una hermana gemela. Fuimos coristas de Jon por un rato y me fui a la universidad a estudiar teatro musical en Boston. Fui a Berklee (Colegio de música) por dos años y estudié música pop y después estudié teatro musical en el Boston Conservatory. Después de eso ya me moví a Nueva York a audicionar y a trabajar.

Es la vida y la historia de Gloria Estefan y empieza el show con ella muy joven y ves como a través de la música y a través de Emilio ella se vuelve en la estrella y el fenómeno que es. Pero también es como el lado personal y lo que le costó para llegar a donde llego.

En la obra eres unos cuantos personajes. ¿Cómo navegas estos diferentes personajes?

Hago Rebecca y Gloria. Cuando soy Rebecca a veces bailo en unos números. Yo veo Rebecca y el conjunto (ensemble) como una parte porque si no me vuelvo loca. Pero, en realidad creo para preparación, creo que estoy súper preparada. Estudie bastante. Uno definitivamente tiene que estar enfocado en el escenario cuando haces diferentes partes.

Porque sino a veces te confundes y eso no va.

Cuando hago Rebecca, es lo que hago todos los días. O sea que ya como que está en mi cuerpo. Ya mi cerebro no tengo que pensar mucho en lo que estoy haciendo, y lo puede hacer del corazón y ya. Y confiar que me se todos los movimientos y en realidad he hecho Gloria suficientemente, más de 70 veces, bastante.

O sea que ya cuando yo empecé la gira y me dijeron que iba estar haciendo dos papeles diferentes - yo nunca he tenido que ser eso y especialmente no en un show tan grande, con una producción tan grande que el show que haces en la tarima es un show, pero el show que pasa backstage es otro show. Uno siempre tiene que caminar en el mismo lugar, porque hay gente corriendo, hay gente moviendo en disfraces y todo eso y es importante que cada uno como que siga con una coreografía backstage también. O sea que yo estaba súper nerviosa en el principio, pero el cerebro es una cosa impresionante. También nuestra compañía, todo mundo [apoya].

Eres Latina, entonces ¿Cómo es ser parte de una obra basada en una persona latina como

Creo que es mi pregunta favorita porque es la parte favorita mía de esta experiencia.

Como alguien que se movió a los estados unidos muy chiquita como que toda mi vida he sentido como que tengo dos partes en mi.

Tengo la parte Latina que es la parte que, en mi casa, mis papas no me dejaban hablar inglés. Era español, todo el día, y comimos comida criolla. O sea, yo crecí en una casa súper venezolana. En el colegio puro inglés, especialmente haciendo teatro musical. Es algo que hemos avanzado, pero es un arte muy, muy, muy americana.

¿Habías visto la obra antes de que hicieras tu audición?

Donde no ceden muchos latinos, no hay muchas oportunidades para performers que son latinos. Siempre me he sentido que estoy viviendo entre dos. Mis amigos americanos no les puedo enseñar mi lado latino porque no lo entienden. Y a mis amigos latinos no les enseño mi lado americano. Esto show ha sido una experiencia muy espectacular porque yo estoy con mis amigos y puedo decir los chistes que decían mis papás cuando yo crecía, y me entienden. Y no les tengo que explicar.

Toda mi vida me he pasado con mis amigos diciendo, “there’s a saying in Spanish...”, y como que nunca queda bien porque no se traduce. No tener que explicarme - es como una conexión que va a otro nivel.

Porque todos estamos en la misma página.

Es espectacular. No se como después de este espectáculo me voy a ir a otro. No que tengo planes ahorita, pero en el futuro, uno nunca sabe. [Pero] no se como voy a ser una producción en donde no haya gente latina.

Eso me va a costar.

Entonces, mucho de el elenco es latino también, ¿Tienen que saber hablar español para esta obra?

Definitivamente para le gente que hacen el papel de Gloria, hay dos understudies de Gloria, y dos de Emilio. Y nosotros en nuestra audición decía que tenias que hablar español. Pero los demás en realidad no, pero por casualidad si hablan. Nuestro equipo creativo hizo un trabajo espectacular en asegurarse que [traerán] la gente que es latina.

Porque nuestro elenco es 95% latino. Es impresionante y yo creo que tiene que ser aquí. Esta historia la necesitamos ahorita, en estos tiempos que, sabes las cosas no están lindas, están muy feas.

Como que la gente en lugares en los estados unidos que son más pequeñas o [rurales], tienen opiniones de latinos que, nunca han tenido experiencias con un latino que no sea lo que escuchan en las noticias y todo eso.

Es importante, nuestro trabajo, nosotros estamos representando la comunidad latina por los estados unidos. Y creo que para ser eso de la manera que se tiene que ser uno tiene que ser latino, sino que estamos haciendo. ¿Cómo ha sido tu experiencia durante la gira de “On Your Feet!”?

Ha sido espectacular, hemos viajado por todos los estados unidos, y pasamos bastante frio, pero la verdad a sido una experiencia

Si, la esposa de Jon [Secada] me llamo como en 2014 y me dijo que iba a ser un show. Que iba ir a Broadway, pero yo estaba haciendo otro show y no pude ir a audicionar. Entonces ellos llegaron a Nueva York y yo llegué a Nueva York, realmente, que pena, cada vez que ponían una Gloria nueva yo iba a ver el show. Yo he visto el show como seis veces.

Era un sentimiento, no lo puedo describir. Yo estaba sentada en la audiencia, yo como que miraba alrededor y dije, “¡porque yo no estoy en allí!”, no entiendo. O sea que, si no, la vi bastante.

Entonces, ¿Has conocido a Gloria y Emilio?

Si. Ellos vinieron a Buffalo cuando estábamos haciendo “tech”, arreglando todos los elementos técnicos y todo eso del show.

Ellos vinieron por una semana. Los vimos and Miami cuando abrimos en Miami, vinieron a DC y a Los Angeles. Ellos están súper involucrados, y son espectaculares.

Son demasiado lindos, y esta experiencia es mil veces mejor sabiendo que estás representando a dos seres humanos que son personas buenas.

Hablando de la producción, ¿Tienes un momento favorito o un aspecto en el escenario, siendo parte de audiencia o detrás de las escenas?

Claro, hay un número en el show, una canción, “Wrapped”, que si recuerdo correctamente Gloria la escribió con un escritor peruano.

Como lo hacen en el show es espectacular.

No lo quiero describir mucho porque es un momento… [que] tienes que estar allí y tienes que verlo porque es muy hermoso. Si vas a venir a ver el show, no mas para ver a “Wrapped”. ¿Y en general que es la mejor parte de trabajar en teatro y ser actriz?

La comunidad del teatro es súper especial, como que es unida y cada vez que pasa un show, uno siempre dice, “se vuelve una familia”, y siempre la gente Latina es así, pero en realidad es verdad. La comunidad no es como un proyecto de televisión o un proyecto de película donde vienes y grabas por dos meses y ya, no vuelves a ver esa gente más. Nosotros tenemos ocho funciones a la semana, quiero decir que estamos toda la semana con la misma gente haciendo el mismo show y ensayando y todo eso y no se siempre pasa algo mágico que como todo mundo se vuelve una familia, y allí con un entendimiento de que todos estamos haciendo esto junto.

Yo creo que especialmente en este show, “On Your Feet!”, somos latinos y para mi se siente el teatro tan especial. No nomas el elenco, el equipo también, estás trabajando con esta gente todos los días. Como nuestro trabajo como actores es de, a mi me gusta decir que es “trabajo del alma”. Porque cuando estamos haciendo el show, le estamos dando permiso a la gente que está sentada viendo el show, por nosotros hacer el show y juntar nuestra

Hasta en Nueva York la gente que yo conozco que están en otros shows, la comunidad es una comunidad muy linda. Como cualquier cosa, obvio, no es perfecto, pero tiene algo muy especial. ¿Qué le puedes decir a la comunidad latina que no ha tenido la oportunidad de ir al teatro en un tiempo, o que nunca han asistido? ¿Por qué sería una buen idea o gran experiencia para ellos echar un vistazo a “On Your Feet!”?

Yo creo que para mi una de las experiencias más especiales en mi vida como actriz, pero también como persona, no hay nada como verte en el escenario. Verte representada en una historia que estas viendo en el escenario. y yo, a mi no me paso hasta que tenía 16 años. Fui a Nueva York y vi “In the Heights” en Broadway por la primera vez y esa fue la primera vez. Yo siempre como niñita, dije, “Yo quiero cantar, yo quiero actuar”, pero pensé que iba a ser difícil hacerlo porque no veía gente latina haciendo lo que quería hacer. Cuando yo vi en el escenario historias latinas, sentí que me dieron permiso que yo

Yo podría ser Claudia Yanez, de Venezuela, y poder lograr mis metas. Yo creo que eso, para la comunidad latina, es mi favorito, cuando vienen audiencias que son latinas.

Esto es una historia que es de dos cubanos que vinieron de cuba y crearon algo de la nada. Es la historia de la mayoría de nosotros. Y especialmente para los niños, para poder verse en el escenario. Como que es clarificación porque uno como inmigrante trabajamos tan difícil, y es importante ver historias de gente que hizo lo mismo y que les fue bien y que lograron algo. Y también yo creo que el show, las audiencias latinas lo entienden un poco más porque hay frases en español o chistes que es algo que es muy latino. Es un show hecho de latinos, creado para latinos, para todo el mundo, pero la realidad la comunidad latina lo va a disfrutar mucho más porque es para ellos.

En la semana de los arcángeles. se piden todo tipo de milagros y bendiciones. Según relatos de los libros sagrados, El Creador otorga muchas potestades milagrosas y espirituales para que los arcángeles obren en la vida de quienes les invocan. La conmemoración a los arcángeles inicia el 22 de septiembre y culmina el día 29 de septiembre, fecha que se conoce como el día de todos los ángeles.

DeepMind’s AI, Gaming, and Human-Machine Partnerships Two years ago, Google’s DeepMind team developed an AI system named AlphaGo, which beat Lee Sedol, one of the world’s best Go players, 4-1 in a five-game match. Last December, DeepMind one-upped itself with AlphaZero, a generic reinforcement learning algorithm that trained itself to beat AlphaGo in a mere 8 hours.

Shelly Palmer Gamers have been pitting their wits and skill against computers since the earliest days of video games. The levels of difficulty were pre-programmed, and at a certain point in the game, the computer was simply unbeatable by all but the most gifted gamers.

Over time, the concept of difficulty levels evolved. For example, Madden NFL Football games have four different levels (ranging from Rookie to All-Madden) that make running plays more difficult, while first-person shooter (FPS) games like Duke Nukem 3D follow the same type of tiered difficulty (ranging from Piece of Cake to Damn, I’m Good) that makes it tougher to stay alive and kill enemies.

While creating different difficulty experiences has long been a discussion topic, something new happened in 2000 when Perfect Dark was released for the Nintendo 64. Like GoldenEye (one of the most beloved games on the Nintendo 64), Perfect Dark was an FPS that you could play with or against friends. Unlike GoldenEye, however, Perfect Dark offered the ability to add up to 8 computercontrolled enemies (called Simulants) to matches, with each Simulant having a customizable difficulty level (ranging from MeatSim to DarkSim).

Suddenly, you didn’t need to have friends come over to have dynamic gameplay experiences; Perfect Dark’s Simulant AI made every match different, and each match and Simulant could be customized to exactly the difficulty level you wanted.

Fast forward to the era of online gaming.

The rising popularity of MMORPGs (i.e.,

World of Warcraft) and battle royal games (i.e., Fortnite) has changed the social paradigm of a generation. You never have to have your friends over; they are always available to play from wherever they are.

But how much longer will you need friends to play with? This level of isolation may portend a new era of social interaction as human vs. machine and ultimately machine vs. machine contests evolve.

DeepMind has since shifted its focus to video games, using reinforcement learning techniques to teach its AI how to play games like StarCraft II and Quake III. DeepMind’s AI has gotten so good at Capture the Flag in Quake III that bot-only teams won 74% of their 2v2 matches at a recent tournament held by the DeepMind team.

That win percentage is noteworthy because it demonstrates that an AI-based cognitive agent can be trained to play well with another AI-based cognitive agent.

Getting AI to play well with others is a

critical step in both the evolution of AI and the evolution of human-machine partnerships.

What Will Humans Do? Watching humans play each other creates the drama we call sports. Which raises the question, will the human imagination be captivated by picking a champion and cheering for one AI over another (even if they are anthropomorphically named)? Will that still be sports? Will an AI impresario (a purpose-built, best practices, fully automated martech AI) promote the event? Where is the line between the struggles and story arcs we care about (person vs. person, person vs. self, and person vs. forces of nature) and learning to care about artificial struggles and artificial story arcs?

Humans have a well-understood capacity to suspend their disbelief for the quality of their own enjoyment. So rooting for one team of AI players over another may just be the natural evolution of storytelling … but maybe not.

AI in Video Games AI has been present in video games since their inception in 1947. You probably remember one of the best-known examples of human vs. machine gaming, IBM’s Deep Blue. It was a chess-playing computer that beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov in a six-game chess match in 1997.

The rise of machine learning combined with the increasing popularity of esports (organized, multiplayer video game competitions that feature professional video gamers gaming against each other with millions of dollars of prize money on the line), may inextricably link AI to gaming and esports.

FanAI raised $2.5 million to build a platform to optimize sponsorships for esports, while eSports One raised $3 million to use AI to help viewers figure out what’s going on in games they may not be familiar with. (With the esports industry expected to hit $2.5 billion by 2020, widespread understanding is crucial to continue to grow the audience.)

That said, the most common implementation of AI in esports is in the games themselves. Companies like AI Gaming want to develop smarter AI bots that would compete against each

WHY IS MAINSTREAM MEDIA STILL SO WHITE?

Non-white journalists make up only 17 percent of newsrooms across the United States.

Soundbite Services DENVER – The story of America is becoming increasingly more diverse, but the same can't be said for America's storytellers.

While the population of the United States is nearly 40 percent nonwhite and growing, 83 percent of journalists working in U.S. newsrooms are white.

To be fair, newsrooms were getting much more diverse until about 2008, when the economy crashed, forcing massive layoffs.

That meant the last journalists hired were the first to go, including many minorities.

At the same time, because the way people get their news has changed so dramatically, newsrooms have continued to shrink.

Rick Harp, who creates podcasts for Media Indigena, says many people’s stories are not being told, or they're framed through the lenses of a white journalist, often male.

"And I think sometimes even if you're not a white man, you tend to adopt their perspective on things – it becomes the norm – and people start to internalize them,” he states. “Even if you're an indigenous reporter, you can run into that."

A recent report by The New York Times showed that the number of people of color in staff positions working at its paper rose to 28 percent in 2017 – up only one point

from the year before.

Angie Chuang, an associate professor of journalism at the University of Colorado, says being a reporter does not necessarily pay well, and many parents may think it's a risky investment when it's time to send their children off to college.

She adds that President Donald Trump calling out journalists as the "enemy of the people" is creating some fear among would-be reporters.

"Really, recently, it's been seen as possibly risky,” she states. “That's certainly a factor if you have a president encouraging people to attack journalists. That's certainly not going to encourage people to stay or go into the profession for their own safety."

Even if minorities are willing to take the personal or financial risk of becoming a reporter, Harp says they often don't see a place for themselves in the world of journalism.

"They're going to be more implicitly encouraged to go into that field if they already see themselves represented,” he states. “If they don't feel themselves represented, either they explicitly feel kind of rejected by the storytelling or implicitly feel that's not a place that they're attracted to."

The Kerner Commission released the first report on the lack of diversity in newsrooms in 1968, calling attention to the issue during reporting on the civil rights movement.
