Q&A: SARINA SORIANO AND THE MAKING OF A LOVE LETTER TO THE LATINO 49ERS COMMUNITY
Senior Producer for the San Francisco 49ers Breaks Down Her Role in Helping the team Celebrate Latino Heritage Month in an Authentic and Community-Centered Way.
Arturo Hilario El Observador
Recentlywe had the opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at the various Latino Heritage Month activations curated by the San Francisco 49ers as part of their yearly celebrations that include the Latino Heritage Night game, digital content and retail merchandise.
Sarina Soriano is an Emmy-winning producer that works with the San Francisco 49ers at their media department, 49ers Studios, creating content for the team’s website and social media channels. She helped coordinate and create the content for this year’s festivities, culminating in a video highlighting the Latino community and 49ers fans.
Born and raised in East Side San Jose, Soriano attended St John Vianney Catholic School and Archbishop Mitty High School, before going to the East Coast to attend Caldwell University in New Jersey where she studied Communication and media Studies, Spanish and Sports Management.
As the first female Senior Producer for the San Francisco 49ers, She is a two-time Emmy Award winner in the following categories: "Best in Craft Achievement Photographer/Editor Spanish: Sarina Soriano" and "Best Sport's Program Live or Post-Produced: 49 Hours."
Alongside the 49ers Latino employee resource group L.E.A.D. Soriano worked to make this year’s Latino Heritage celebrations a particularly home grown and authentic one, culminating in the feature video Unidos: Latinos United
The video features plenty of local fans in the community, cultural touchstones, Latino 49ers players and even some family and friends of Soriano intercut with footage of the team, which happens to be going 4-0 undefeated into the game against the Cowboys this Sunday October 8. That video can be seen here: 49ers.com/video/latinos-unidos-latinos-united.
What was the process for producing a video like the Unidos: Latinos United?
Starting in February, kind of after our season was done, I knew I definitely wanted to do a fan centered piece. And luckily last year I was able to hire an international video producer under me who also helps me exclusively with Spanish video content.
So I let him know, "hey, I know it's the offseason, but let's start maybe brainstorming and we can get this done hopefully in the summer." So finally June comes around, and it's like, "okay, I've been in the business a long time. I know Latino Heritage Month comes up really quick." So we were like, "let's really knock this out and try to create a piece that we feel represents not only Mexicanos, but all of the Latinos here in the Bay Area that happen to be huge 49ers fans."
Video Producer Aaron Sarmiento came up with the script. From that script, that's when we really started to hone down and storyboard exactly what shots we thought would go perfectly with the script and what we were trying to say. There's a bunch of eclectic people in the group, from my grandmother, the girl shopping for my grandmother is my prima, my cousin. I have my hair braider in there. I thought that some type of hair product or something should be included and represented in the video as well.
Aaron had been in contact with our 707 Faithful Group, as well as all those guys with those cool cars. They're here constantly every home game, so we knew we wanted to include them in as well. And then to make it very gen Z-like and just having a really broad younger audience as well, we included our influencers, the Salguero family, as well as the Aguilars.
So it's truly awesome to see that all come together and everyone who was so willing to want to be a part of it. I can't forget Fred Warner and the rest of our players, who, from the moment they heard it, were like, "I would love to represent my culture and what that means to me." So it was awesome that we were able to produce that and have that be the hero piece for Latino Heritage Month at the 49ers.
I read that you were the first female senior producer for the team. What was it like stepping into that role and being the first?
I was hired in 2016 as an intern, part of the Denise DeBartolo York Fellowship, where it put women who had just graduated from college in six departments that were underrepresented and that were male dominated.
I knew growing up that I wanted to be specifically with broadcast or cameras, so I knew my heart was in 49ers Studios as soon as I stepped into that rotation. After one year, the program ended, and I was very lucky to be the first female in the entire group. I think a lot of that attributes to women not being able to see a lot of women on screen holding cinema cameras.
Back when I was in middle school, the only Latina I saw on my screen was Michele Tafoya. So I thought that I wanted to be a sports reporter growing up, but I always have had this love for cameras, so I think it's truly an honor to be one of the first. But I just hope that women see the work
that I'm doing and not only appreciate the art of it itself, but also the fact that I'm doing it in this space where we're not really seen as much. And I hope that young women can see and can learn that they can go this path if they really want it as well.
Could you talk a little bit about the L.E.A.D. group and what that entails?
Yeah, I feel really special working for the 49ers because of our Latino employee resource group. We're called L.E.A.D., and we have a wonderful group that was in charge of the complete slogan for the entire month of Latino Heritage Month, which was "Latinos Unidos", so you see that in all of our graphics. You see that on game day, you see that on social media. So they played a really huge part in all the activations that we were able to achieve for this month. So it's really cool to be a part of them and to get their input on certain things. And they were also part of the Latino Heritage video as well. They were all those people holding the flags from their culture, so it was really cool to include them in that.
Can you tell me a little bit about any feedback or commentary you've gotten from this video going out into the public and maybe from the people that are in the video themselves, like what they think of it?
Yeah, I feel so blessed and just still a little bit overwhelmed by the outpouring of positive messages and responses, not only from the 49ers organi-
zation and the Latinos in this business, but even from mothers and daughters saying that they felt represented, that they were like, "I truly resonated with the video. I get my hair done. It's so cool seeing Fred and Alfredo on the screen." I think when people say that your work is inspiring them, it's going to take your breath away a little bit. But I'm just glad that they know that not only are they represented with the 49ers, but we care about them as an organization as well.
Can you talk a little bit about what else is going on with the team for the end of the Latino Heritage Month and anything you've done already?
I think one of the biggest things and elements that we've done, we had a whole Latino Heritage Month game against the Giants. So that whole game, from the music that had a lot of Latin flavor and culture incorporated in it, to the video that played on the big boards, that was probably our main piece.
But also, our L.E.A.D. team, like I said, played a huge part in the Latinos Unidos slogan. But we are also highlighting a lot of our Latino and Latinas that work in the 49ers through LinkedIn and on various other social posts through the 49ers channels.
Additionally, we have Latino Heritage Month merchandise that we have been selling in the store where you could grab some pins, some hats that are super popular, shirts and all that. So we've been trying to do multiple things in that regard social, but there's also in regard to videos, we have our players speaking Spanish in the locker room. We're going to do more videos on that on a weekly basis. So we're going to continue to do that through the end of Latino Heritage Month.
So, overall, what has been your takeaway in working on these community focused events and content for the team? How does that make you feel, being Latina as well?
Being able to not only represent who I am, my family and my culture through my art is something that is so special to me. I absolutely love the 49ers and I absolutely love who I am, and being able to mix that together is a dream come true. Being a Latina in sports can be sometimes very daunting, especially when I first started in my career. But just to see the amount of growth of women in general in the sport and on my marketing team even, there's actually a few other Latinas on the marketing team, and I've never worked with so many Latinas. It's truly amazing, and I just know that more people who look like me are going to want to continue to have their careers in these sports.
And I just hope that they feel that I am a resource of some sort that could try to help and give them advice into how to get their foot in the door, but also how to truly be authentic to who they are in this huge space where we're still very much underrepresented.
And as seen in the video, having Latina/os in these spaces equals very organic outreach to the community of fans as well.
Yeah, exactly. I love how I was able to incorporate just fans who've been a part of the team forever, like the guys in the car or just all of that. They felt so appreciative to even be noticed and it's like, absolutely. You guys are what make the team go around. We do this for our fans, so it was awesome to include them.
Is there any final thought you have on this?
I think I basically said it, always be proud of who you are and authentic to yourself, your culture and what you want to represent, and know that people out there can really feel connected to you because of how authentic you are.

Me peino.

TWO CA NONPROFIT LEADERS WIN AARP PURPOSE PRIZE
Suzanne Potter California News Service
Leaders of two nonprofits in California have won the 2024 AARP Purpose Prize, which honors people over age fifty who are making a difference.
Don Schoendorfer from Irvine, who designed a wheelchair that can be distributed easily in developing countries through his nonprofit, "Free Wheelchair Mission," is the first.
Dr. Laura Stachel, founder of We Care Solar and an obstetrician from Berkeley, is second, after an unnerving experience while conducting medical research in Africa drove her to help.
"I was working in a hospital in northern Nigeria in 2008," Stachel recounted. "I was actually helping on a C-section when the lights went out. And I couldn't believe it. We were trying to finish the surgery where there was no light in the room. If we hadn't had a flashlight that I brought with me, there would have been no light to finish."
She founded We Care Solar in 2010 to provide solar electricity to maternal health facilities. Since then, the nonprofit has equipped more than 8,000 clinics in over 20 countries with suitcases equipped with solar power and medical devices.

Stachel noted it costs about $3,600 to donate a suitcase, ship and install it, plus train the local health care workers, and maintain it at a clinic for five years.
"The Solar Suitcase is mounted to a wall inside the health facility and has four medical/ surgical lights, a fetal Doppler, an infrared thermometer," Stachel outlined. "It has 12volt DC charging for phones and other devices. And it enables health facilities to work around the clock, seven days a week."
Purpose Prize winners get a $50,000 donation to their organization and are eligible for another $10,000 through the AARP Inspire Award. The competition allows the public to vote for their favorite Purpose Prize winner.

NEWSOM PICKS LAPHONZA BUTLER , POLITICAL ALLY AND POWER PLAYER, TO REPLACE FEINSTEIN
The governor says he’s not stopping the president of EMILY’s List and former University of California regent from running for a full term in the 2024 election. He rebuffed pressure to appoint Rep. Barbara Lee.

Laphonza
Butler, a longtime political strategist with close ties to organized labor and Gov. Gavin Newsom, will take the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s seat in the U.S. Senate following her death Friday September 29.
The appointment, reported by Politico tonight and confirmed by the governor’s office, closes a brief but rapid period of speculation about how Newsom would fulfill a promise to return a Black woman to the Senate without tipping the scales in what is already a crowded race to succeed Feinstein.
“As we mourn the enormous loss of Senator Feinstein, the very freedoms she fought for — reproductive freedom, equal protection, and safety from gun violence — have never been under greater assault,” Newsom said in a statement. “Laphonza will carry the baton left by Senator Feinstein, continue to break glass ceilings, and fight for all Californians in Washington D.C.”
Butler currently serves as president of EMILYs List, an organization that works to elect Democratic women who support abortion rights. She was for many years the head of SEIU Local 2015, a union representing California long-term caregivers, before becoming a partner in what was then known as SCRB Strategies, Newsom’s political consulting firm, and later working in public policy for Airbnb. She’s also a former University of California regent.
Her selection allows Newsom, who enjoys making political history with his appointments, to once again celebrate a milestone — Butler is the first openly LGBTQ person to represent California in the Senate. She lives in Maryland with her partner, Neneki Lee, and their daughter, Nylah, according to an online biography.
“For women and girls, for workers and unions, for struggling parents waiting for our leaders to bring opportunity back to their homes, for all of California, I’m ready to serve,” Butler said in a statement.
Republicans swiftly criticized Newsom for choosing someone from outside the state. Izzy Gardon, a spokesperson for the governor, said that Butler is a longtime California homeowner who moved to the Washington, D.C., area to run EMILYs List and that she would re-register to vote in California before being sworn into the Senate.
In a statement, Tony Hoang, executive director of the LGBTQ rights advocacy group Equality
California, celebrated “another voice in Congress at a time when our rights and freedoms are under attack across the country.”
This is Newsom’s second Senate appointment, and he faced tremendous pressure to choose a Black woman for the position. Only two, including Vice President Kamala Harris, have ever served as senators and none currently do.
Newsom promised to do so during an MSNBC interview in March 2021, an effort to alleviate the anger some activists felt when he chose Alex Padilla to be California’s first Latino senator after then-Sen. Harris was elected vice president.
But earlier this month, the governor told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he would make an “interim appointment” if he had to fill Feinstein’s seat because he did not “want to get involved in the primary,” even as he remained committed to choosing a Black woman.
That seemingly ruled out Rep. Barbara Lee, an Oakland Democrat who is already running for Senate. She trails Reps. Adam Schiff, a Burbank Democrat, and Katie Porter, an Irvine Democrat, who are both white, in public polls about the March primary.
Lee and her supporters were incensed, calling it offensive that a Black woman should only get to serve in the Senate in a caretaker capacity. Many of them, including the Congressional Black Caucus, publicly urged Newsom to select her anyway in the days after Feinstein’s death.
After Newsom’s announcement, Lee wished Butler well in an online statement, but said she is “singularly focused on winning my campaign for Senate.”
“CA deserves an experienced Senator who will deliver on progressive priorities,” she said.
“That’s exactly what I’m running to do.”
Butler’s appointment could further complicate the race. Newsom appeared to back off his earlier pledge on Sunday, when his office confirmed that his appointee would be free to run for a full term.
It isn’t clear yet whether Butler will run. If she does, she will have to manage two campaigns at once — one for the regular election to succeed Feinstein, and one for a special election to fill out the remainder of her term, which is expected to be held concurrently, with a primary in March and a potential runoff in November.
Newsom communications adviser Anthony York denied that
the governor had changed his mind about a short-term appointment and said his comment referred to the fact that his appointee would serve as an interim until the next election. York said Newsom regretted not clearing up the confusion sooner, but the decision about a replacement was still hypothetical at that time.
Despite her previous career, organized labor is likely to split on Butler. Many felt betrayed when she represented Uber in 2019 as the company tried to broker a deal that would avoid classifying their drivers as employees. Several unions have already endorsed other candidates in the Senate race.
Newsom’s quick decision on the appointment, which should allow Butler to be sworn in this week, will boost the razor-thin majority that Democrats hold in the Senate — a potentially crucial vote in the month ahead as Congress, which barely avoided a government shutdown this weekend, must pass another bill to fund operations by midNovember.
“Governor Newsom’s swift action ensures that Californians maintain full representation in the Senate as we navigate a narrow Democratic majority,” Padilla said in a statement. “I look forward to working together to deliver for the people of California.”

EARTHTALK Q&A: POLLUTION LINKED TO MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS
Dear EarthTalk: Are there any proven links between exposure to pollution and mental health problems?
--
John C.,
EARTHTALK Q&A: LA CONTAMINACIÓN ESTÁ VINCULADA A PROBLEMAS DE SALUD MENTAL
EarthTalk
Mentalhealth and environment are two issues often in the spotlight, though not often associated together. But some researchers have begun to find links between increases in polluted air, water and soil and growing mental health problems throughout our society.
Several recent studies showed that exposure to high levels of air pollutants, like fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide, is linked to higher risks of mental health problems. Several studies have found that long-term exposure to air pollution can increase risks of depression, anxiety and even neurodevelopmental disorders in children. Harvard researchers recently concluded that longterm exposure to air pollution correlates to late-life depression in older Americans. More studies are needed, but researchers believe that the inflammation and oxidative stress caused by air pollution likely affects mental health negatively.
Emerging research also suggests that air pollution may have adverse effects on cognitive abilities, including memory and decision-making. These impairments can, in turn, contribute to stress and anxiety. Exposure to contaminants like lead, arsenic and pesticides in drinking water can have neurotoxic effects, too, leading to behavioral and cognitive problems in both children and adults and contributing to the development of mental health issues like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

and depression.
Noise pollution, often overlooked but pervasive in urban areas, can also harm mental well-being. Chronic exposure to noise pollution can lead to increased stress levels, sleep disturbances and heightened anxiety and depression.
Noise pollution's negative impact on mental health is compounded by its association with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, which can further contribute to mental health problems.
Environmental justice aspects of pollution and mental health are at issue, too.
Low-income communities and marginalized populations are often disproportionately exposed to pollution due to factors such as proximity to industrial facilities and limited access to green spaces. Consequently, these communities face a higher burden of mental health issues linked to pollution, exacerbat-
ing existing health disparities.
Addressing these concerns requires concerted efforts on multiple fronts. Governments and regulatory bodies must prioritize air and water quality standards, enforce pollution controls and invest in cleaner technologies. Individuals can reduce their personal exposure by using air purifiers and cleaner transportation options, and advocating for clean energy policies. Also, mental health services need to incorporate environmental factors into their assessment and treatment plans. Healthcare professionals should be trained to recognize the potential role of pollution in mental health problems.

MATTER OF LANIER
Case No. 19FL002379
ATTACHMENT 8(d)
– ORDER TO SHOW CAUSE AND AFFIDAVIT FOR CONTEMPT
1. Respondent has yet to provide his W-2 or pay any amount of the Smith-Ostler payment owed to me according to the Stipulation and Order filed July 15, 2020.
2. My attorney, Kathryn Schlepphorst, has sent at least two letters (dated March 30, 2023
and July 19, 2022) to his counsel requesting this. have sent several emails requesting the documentation as well.
3. As Respondent has not provided his W-2, the amount is unknown for the Smith-Ostler payment. Respondent’s last Smith-Ostler payment was a total of $213,770.80. As this is a significant amount, it is crucial to figure out what Respondent now owes.
4. As this matter is now post-judgment, we are not able to process the subpoena as normal. We could have to personally serve Respondent with the Notice to Consumer as we would have to Subpoena Apple, Inc., his past employer, for his W-2. This is an unnecessary additional expense that I should not have to incur due to his failure to comply.
5. Both of our counsel have met and conferred on multiple occasions to resolve this issue and we still have yet to receive any paystubs or incomerelated document from him.
6. The true Smith -Ostler amount remains unknown due to lack of Respondent’s W-2.

Youmay have heard about older adults being tricked into sending money to someone they think is a grandchild or other relative in trouble and thought to yourself, "How could anyone fall for that?" But the truth is, today's advanced technology makes it easier than ever for scammers to trick their unsuspecting and wellmeaning victims.
To protect yourself, it pays to understand how fraudsters work, what red flags to look for, and how to trust your instincts so you don't end up on the losing end of one of these vicious scams.
How grandparent scams work
Scammers prey on kind-hearted victims by convincing people their grandchild or other relative has had an accident or is in some kind of legal or financial trouble. The scammers then plead for money to get them out of the "jam."
For years, criminals have been able to gather facts and personal information from people's social media accounts to contact their older relatives. Once the criminals contact older relatives via text, email or phone, the criminals can sound very convincingly like a relative in dire trouble.
The A.I. twist
Because of advances in artificial intelligence (A.I.), criminals can now make their pleas for cash sound even more convincing when calling
on the phone. According to the Federal Trade Commission, these scammers use A.I. voice cloning software to mimic your relative's voice by pulling the audio from their social media videos.
Unfortunately, scammers often couple this tactic with a "spoofed" phone number that shows up on your caller ID with your relative's name, so it looks like it's really them calling you.
How to spot red flags
Fortunately, there are ways to prevent criminals from stealing from you. The United States Postal Inspection Service® recommends a few simple steps to avoid being taken by this extremely vicious scam.
Watch out for these red flags:
* Late-night calls. Scammers often call victims in the middle of the night, hoping to catch you when you're not fully awake and less likely to think clearly. If that happens to you, tell them you'll call them right back. You can then take the time to fully wake up, gather your wits and contact your grandchild or relative via the method you usually use to talk to them. Do not return the call you just received.
* Urgent pleas for money. Be suspicious of any phone calls including requests for money, even if it sounds like someone you know. Scammers use fear to get you worried about your loved one, so you won't take the time to think things through. If someone asks for money right away, hang up. Contact your loved one the way you usually

contact them, and/or check with other trusted family members first.
* Requests for odd methods of payment. If you're asked to send money using methods like a mobile payment app, mailing cash, wiring money, sending gift cards or money orders, or other unusual payment methods, hang up. Once money is sent using these methods, there's no way to get it back. If you are asked to meet somewhere so you can give them cash in person, hang up and report the incident to law enforcement.
If you've been affected by crime that involves the U.S. Mail®, contact the United States Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455 or report it online at USPIS.gov/report. If you think you've been targeted by a grandparent scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission at 888-225-5322, or visit ConsumerComplaints.FCC.gov.

WHAT DO YOUNG LATINO VOTERS WANT TO HEAR FROM POLITICIANS?
“Young Latinos just want to have normal lives. We don't want to be in crisis mode 24-7 with breaking news alerts going on every two hours.”

Latino youth — predicted to be a major voting bloc in the 2024 Presidential election — are veering from their older family members and shifting hard left on a host of issues, including gun control, reproductive rights, climate change, and immigration policy.
A day ahead of the second Republican Presidential debate, the Brennan Center for Justice hosted a panel discussion Sept. 26, focusing on the rising power of LatinX youth. The panel featured Maria Teresa Kumar, CEO of Voto Latino; Santiago Mayer, executive director of Voters of Tomorrow, which he founded at age 17; and Arizona state Rep. Alma Hernandez, who has been involved in Democratic politics since she was fourteen. The panel was moderated by Paola Ramos, a correspondent for Vice and a contributor at Telemundo and MSNBC.
Latinos are now the second largest voting bloc in the United States after non-Hispanic white voters. Latinos are also both the fastest growing and the youngest electorate. In 2022, 34.5 million Latinos were eligible to vote, according to a Pew Research Center study, up almost 5 million since 2018. An estimated 70% of Latinos who vote are registered Democrats. However, candidate engagement with the community is minimal.
‘The Good Old Days of Newt Gingrich’ Panelists noted that narratives about the Latino vote swinging right to support former President Donald Trump are based on a deep campaign of misinformation, perpetuated through both social and mainstream media.
Kumar said candidates would have to take a stance on immigration, going back to their party’s roots.
“There was a time when the Republican party was vying for the Latino vote. And not so long ago in 2012, when Newt Gingrich — former Speaker of the House — was on that stage, he was talking about compassionate pathways to citizenship for people who had been in this country for at least 10 or 20 years.”
“But Republican candidates today have failed miserably because instead they’ve politicized workers, people that want to contribute, who are American: all but a social security number. And as a result, we have been polarized as a country in ways that we never thought possible.”
“So what I would look for of individuals going on to that stage is some leadership and adulthood and speaking straight. Because it’s very easy to demonize the most vulnerable and the most marginalized. But at the end of the day, none of those folks that do that have a pathway to the White House, plain and simple,” said Kumar.

“Our job as Latinos is to make sure that we are paying attention and holding people accountable because at the end of the day, we want the same protections every American has, including for our families,” she added. “The person that wants to truly have a shot at the White House tomorrow night is going to have to be able to divorce themselves from the dangerous policies that are hurting people in Latino communities.”
Mayer discussed the findings of a recent Voters of Tomorrow poll. “Young people care about the economy and jobs. This is number one, which is shocking for a lot of people, but it is really something that we feel in our day-to -day lives,” he said.
“Number two, abortion rights and access to reproductive care. Even some of the groups that you really wouldn’t think care about abortion, like the frat boy demographic, for example, they are very concerned about this issue,” said Mayer.
“We care about gun violence. We’ve grown up with the threat of fearing in our own classrooms. We’ve seen the climate deteriorate, and we are very con-
cerned about the climate crisis,” he said, adding that Latino youth are also concerned about LGBTQ rights even if they are not part of the queer community.
‘Worlds Exploding’
“The bottom line is young people, especially young Latinos just want to have normal lives. We don’t want to be in crisis mode 24-7 with breaking news alerts going on every two hours. We just want to be able to sit down and have a normal conversation without something in the world exploding and having to deal with it,” said Mayer.
“Candidates need to lean on that, especially the Republican candidates who keep in many ways sort of denying reality, especially with regards to like climate and gun violence,” he added.
Hernandez, the youngest-ever representative in the Arizona state Legislature, said she would like to see the candidates comprehensively address reproductive rights.
Another Day Older and Deeper in Debt
“Women’s health is going to be on the ballot again. And I think it’s really critical that these candidates tell us where they stand on this issue. If they’re, if they think they’re going to win by saying: ‘we’re going to continue to attack women and their reproductive rights,’ well, I’d love to see how that goes.”
“Republicans blocked President Joe Biden’s efforts for student loan debt forgiveness. And I would like to really hear what their plans are to help so many American students who have gone into so much debt to get educated. What is their plan to help them?”
“We tell people constantly: ‘go to school, get an education, you’ll get a good job’, but what are Republicans’ plans for those who have gone to school, but now are barely making enough to cover their loan payments?” queried Hernandez.
“We’re hearing that a recession is coming again. And I think that people around my age and people who have gone to school are really, really starting to get nervous and really want to know what, what are people going to do to help them? And those are two of the important issues that I believe is going to really change the minds of voters and the way that they’re going to see these folks who want to be elected officials,” she said.
All three panelists agreed that candidates need to reach out to LatinX voters consistently throughout the election cycle, not just two weeks before the polls open.
