Thereis no doubt that Kamala Harris will win the majority of the Hispanic vote on November 5. All the Democratic presidential candidates without exception have done so at one time or another.
But the question that will probably only be cleared up on the day of the vote is what the margin of victory will be.
The outcome of the election could depend on the answer to that question, if we take into account the weight of
Hispanic voters in decisive states such as Arizona and Nevada.
Currently, in almost all polls, Latino support for Harris is below 60%, that is, a smaller proportion than Joe Biden in 2020, Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Barack Obama in 2012.
Harris's Latino problem is easy to describe, but difficult to solve: polls confirm that Latino voters have more confidence in Donald Trump to confront three of their main concerns, the economy, migration and crime.
These are issues that consistently appear not only in polls, but are also heard by activists who have been mobilizing the Hispanic vote in 2024. Yadira Sánchez of Poder Latinx tells us that issues such as the economy, the high costs of housing and childcare are of great concern to voters.
Among Latino voters, the segment with the greatest inclination to join Trump's column is that of men.
An NBC/Telemundo survey found that a majority of Latino voters prefer Harris for her temperament, her competence, and for having the mental and physical health necessary to be president. But apparently in this election, these are not sufficient attributes.
Arturo Vargas, director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) is clear that the idea that all Latinos are Democrats is nothing more than a "myth."
"Latino voters vote according to the issues that matter most to them in each election. In some elections, it has been the Democratic candidates that they trust the most, in others it has been the Republican candidates. That is why we are always telling the parties: we must invest in the Latino vote… The Latino voter closely follows the Latino issues of each election and pays attention to what the candidates are saying,” he said in our television program Mano a Mano on La Red Hispana.
Perhaps because of this, Kamala Harris has hardened the tone and content of her message on migration. But the most recent poll by The New York Times/Sienna College shows that this last-minute turn does not seem to be moving the needle in favor of the vice president.
In other words, just 3 weeks before the presidential election, it may be too late for Kamala Harris to regain the same level of Latino support that Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden earned.
It is a major political lesson for the way of doing politics in the United States. The Latino voter must be taken seriously, all the time, when campaigning but also when governing. And it is not enough for them to whisper in our ear in English, Spanish or ‘Spanglish’. They need to speak to us in the language of actions that resolve and pay attention to our needs and aspirations. Nothing more, nothing less.

Survivors of crime are speaking out against Proposition 36, which goes before California voters in November.
The ballot measure would increase penalties for some theft and drug crimes - and undo parts of Proposition 47, which took savings from decreased incarceration and put the money into harm-reduction programs.
Tinisch Hollins, executive director of Californians for Safety and Justice, spoke Wednesday October 16 at the opening of a new trauma recovery center in Oakland.
"It's pushing the state to move back towards 'toughon-crime.' We are pushing back on that. You need to prioritize resources to create trauma-recovery centers because this is the way to create safety in our community." Hollins said.
Supporters of Prop. 36 say current laws are too lenient, particularly concerning retail theft. But the state legislative analyst has suggested Prop. 36 will send many more people to jail, increasing criminaljustice costs anywhere from tens of millions to the low hundreds of millions of dollars each year.
Hollins said that would mean less money for programs that actually address poverty and desperation - the root cause of crime.
"Folks who have been touched by incarceration,
folks who are experiencing homelessness, folks who are experiencing barriers to employment, they can actually get a full range of services to stabilize," Hollins added. "Think about how impactful this will be if we're able to continue expanding this model."
Advocates of Prop. 36 project that it would mean $850 million less over the next decade for trauma recovery centers, mental health, drug treatment, victim services, reentry and crime-prevention programs.

35 YEARS AFTER LOMA PRIETA, CALIFORNIA READIES COMMUNITIES FOR NEXT BIG EARTHQUAKE
With the next big earthquake overdue, new state initiatives are giving Californians unprecedented ways to protect themselves.
Selen Ozturk Ethnic Media Services
As the 35th anniversary of the devastating Loma Prieta Earthquake occurred on October 17, the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) began rolling out measures including a first-in-the-nation earthquake early warning system, a Great ShakeOut preparedness drill, multilingual education and an earthquake detection app.
Loma Prieta was a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the Greater San Francisco Bay Area in 1989, killing 63 people, injuring 3,757 and wreaking an estimated $5.6 to $6 billion in damages — equal to $13.8 to $14.7 billion today.
Within the next 30 years, there’s a 72% chance that a similar earthquake measuring 6.7 will hit the Bay Area; 51% chance of an earthquake measuring 7; and 20% chance of an earthquake measuring 7.5, according to U.S. Geological Survey data.
For the Los Angeles region, estimates are 60% for an earthquake measuring 6.7; 46% for an earthquake measuring 7; and 31% for an earthquake measuring 7.5.
“However, earthquakes remain unpredictable. It really is hard, despite all our scientific advances, to reputably predict earthquakes and the billions in damage they can cause,” said Amy Palmer, deputy director of crisis communications for Cal OES.
“You may have lived through or seen some of the horrifying images of freeways and homes collapsing 35 years ago … We never want to take for granted that Californians know what to do when the shaking starts,” she added. “As we’re facing more — and varied — disasters in California, the bright spot is that it’s never been easier to get life-saving information through events like the Great ShakeOut.”
The Great ShakeOut
This year’s Great ShakeOut, an annual international earthquake preparedness drill, will happen throughout California at 10:17 a.m. on Thursday, October 17, the 35th anniversary of Loma Prieta.
Over 9.6 million people have already registered statewide, and over 52 million worldwide.
“That’s nearly 10 million souls practicing to save their lives, and we’re expecting to surpass our largestever count with a few more million this next week,” said José Lara, CalOES Seismic Hazards Branch manager.
Those in San Diego, Los Angeles and Sacrameento may also prepare for earthquakes one-on-one through CalOES on-site tours held at UC San Diego on October 14; youth reentry nonprofit Homeboy Industries on October 15; and CSU Sacramento on October 16.
“We’re focusing on schools and youth areas because we find that in high-risk, vulnerable communities who need these preparedness messages most, whenever we’re able to reach the children, parents often get prepared as well,” said Lara.
Each tour stop will feature a 7.0 magnitude earthquake simulator “that we won’t allow anybody to stand up in, because it does such a realistic job that we truly feel that there would be an injury,” he continued. “Whenever people who have never experienced a very strong shake steep out of the simulator, they ask: ‘What’s the best thing I could do to prepare today?’”
‘Drop, cover and hold’
When the big shake comes, Cal OES recommends dropping to the floor, taking cover from falling or flying objects and holding on to something steady.
“In footage of an earthquake, there’s often a moment where people freeze and don’t know the right thing to do, and that’s exactly what we’re trying to combat,” said Lara. “The best thing to do is drop, cover and hold on.”
The 6.7 magnitude Northridge earthquake of 1994, for instance, killed 57 people and injured over 8,700 in the Los Angeles area, with damages estimated between $13 and $50 billion.
Yet, 55% of human injuries were caused by falling furniture or objects, while only 1% were caused by building damage.
“It’s no longer the guidance that we ask you to stand beneath a doorway or leave the building as soon as possible. Most injuries come from that,” Lara explained. “That guidance comes from decades ago, before most of our buildings were designed to ‘Life Safety Codes,’ which mean that the building will let you survive with minimal injuries.”
Resources for the future
“Unlike other weather-driven scenarios, earthquakes aren’t predictable, but technology is giving us unprecedented opportunities to be ready,” said Sonya Harris, senior advisor of Cal OES disaster preparedness campaign Listos California.
Among this new technology is the California Earthquake Early Warning System, the first of its kind in the nation, launched in 2019 and since improved to send alerts up to 30 seconds before an earthquake occurs.
So far, Californians have received millions of alerts, largely through the MyShake app— which is free, available in the state’s top six languages and offers preparedness tips alongside alerts.
For privacy or battery protection, users can opt to share their zip code rather than their location, which the app never saves.
More earthquake preparedness resources are available in 14 languages through Listos California.
“We also encourage everyone to enable emergency and local awareness alerts in their phone settings — but our future is one where no one has to download an app at all to receive an alert, one where earthquake early warning systems will be where fire alerts and automatic sprinklers now are in buildings,” said Lara.
“There will come a time when, if you’re working in a factory and an earthquake occurs, the assembly line will automatically turn off, the turbines on our dams will immediately shut down and we can cut off traffic through a bridge before the shaking arrives,” he continued.
“There’s often a myth that it takes more time or money than we thought to be prepared — but all these resources are free and take moments to connect to,” added Harris. “We’re honoring those we’ve lost to earthquakes, and how far we’ve come to have these seconds that will save lives.”
El Great ShakeOut

NYC ELECTION INTEGRITY QUESTIONED AFTER MAYOR ADAMS INDICTED
Edwin J. Viera Public News Service
New York City election integrity is under added scrutiny after Mayor Eric Adams' indictment.
Part of the indictment alleges Adams broke campaign finance laws during his 2021 mayoral bid. But some groups advocating for good government feel there is not much cause for concern.
Rachael Fauss, senior policy analyst for the group Reinvent Albany, noted the charges against Adams mean the enforcement mechanism works in New York's public matching program for political campaign funds. She said the city's Campaign Finance Board flags any suspicious patterns of contributions.
"There's a whole filing and disclosure process that candidates have to go through," Fauss explained. "By vetting those filings, the Campaign Finance Board can find where they think there are violations and, in this case, it ended up going through to the Southern District and an indictment resulted from this."
With the mayoral election next year, and Adams vehemently aiming for a second term, Fauss pointed out there are ways to bolster election integrity. One recommendation is for the Campaign Finance Board to hold campaign audits closer to elections, which could boost confidence in the process. Fauss also feels the language should be clearer on campaign contribution disclosures about the penalties a person can face.
The Campaign Finance Board is considering new rules about when to withhold matching funds from a campaign. The rules would also examine when expenses are truly independent. Fauss thinks now is not the time to make big changes, although she added they would have value in future elections.
"Their new regulations should help with enforcement. Speeding up the process for the audits I think will help give more confidence that the system is working as it should," Fauss outlined. "But you know, of course, we're in the middle of a presidential election right now, so we have other things on our minds, but the mayoral election will be here shortly in 2025."
She adds the Campaign Finance Board provides transparency about how campaigns get money. The challenge ahead is ensuring people understand what the board's data mean in terms of election integrity.

CUESTIONAN INTEGRIDAD ELECTORAL EN NYC TRAS ACUSAR AL ALCALDE ADAMS
Edwin J. Viera Public News Service

PREPARING FOR EATING, TRAVELING AND SOCIALIZING DURING THE HOLIDAYS
Healthy holiday tips for people living with diabetes
BPT
Theholiday season is a joyful but sometimes challenging time, especially for people living with diabetes who may be watching their sugar intake. Between treat-filled parties and meals and travel that could get in the way of healthy eating, it can be tough to manage glucose levels during this time of year.
To help you make the most of the holiday festivities, here are tips to help you feel your best and enjoy your time without compromising your health.
Smart food strategies
When hosting, you have control over the menu, so you can select foods that help you feel your best. For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises people living with diabetes to choose whole foods over highly processed foods, plus non-starchy veggies like spinach, broccoli and green beans. They also recommend limiting added sugars and refined grains (pasta, white bread and rice). Combining certain foods can help maintain glucose levels as well.
"Combining carbs in meals with protein, fat or fiber can help keep your glucose steady," said Sara Thomas, a registered dietitian and research scientist with a Ph.D. in nutrition science and expertise in diabetes and obesity. "For example, you can serve whole grains, like brown rice, alongside lean protein, a salad and/or roasted veggies to help balance your glucose."
When you're not the host, it can be stressful being unsure what food and drinks will be served. If you're attending a party, offer to bring a dish that works well with your glucose management, like:
* Balsamic oven-roasted veggies (vegetables with a flavorful kick)
* Green beans with mushroom and onions (a staple vegetable on holiday tables)
* Butternut squash gratin (a healthier take on this cheesy holiday favorite!)
* Spinach salad with goat cheese and beets
Find more meal ideas to help keep you on track on the American Diabetes Association website. Snacks, the key to instant happiness - and balanced glucose!
Just like not showing up empty-handed to a holiday party or family gathering, you shouldn't show up hungry, either. Having a snack prior to the gettogether can help with minimizing glucose highs or lows.
"You might think waiting until a party to eat means you're saving up calories, but if you show up hungry you might overeat and make not-as-healthy choices," added Thomas. "Have a healthy snack
first that pairs carbs with fats or proteins, like an apple with peanut butter."
Additionally, if you choose to drink alcohol, remember alcohol affects people in different ways. It's best not to drink on an empty stomach, and it's recommended to stick to one serving of alcohol for women and two servings for men. It's also a good idea to drink water before and after drinking alcohol.
When you're living with diabetes, utilizing a continuous glucose monitor like Abbott's FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor can show you your glucose numbers in real-time and help you easily see glucose patterns, empowering you to make more informed decisions,1 around what to eat and drink during the holidays, without the need for fingersticks.
Navigating social interactions
If you're living with diabetes or shared with your family and friends that you're monitoring your glucose, they may comment on what you're eating or drinking when you're at a gathering. While most likely well-intentioned, these comments can add additional stress beyond just watching what you're eating, which can also negatively impact your glucose levels.
One way to manage this is to respond with something like, "I appreciate your questions and concerns. This is what works best for me." If you feel comfortable, you could show them insights from your continuous glucose monitor and explain how it has helped with improving your glucose control.
Explore more, worry less: Savvy traveling tips
In addition to thinking through what you're eating and drinking during the holidays, travel can add even more stress that can impact your glucose levels. Like preparing for holiday gatherings, you can prepare for travel, too. For example, you can prepackage balanced snacks to pack alongside your medicines and diabetes supplies if you're living with diabetes. Here are additional ideas to reduce holiday travel stress:
* Pack snacks like nuts, dried fruits, cheese and high-protein/high-fiber bars.
* Allow extra time to get through security to reduce stress.
* Choose flights with at least one-hour layovers (for connected flights) to prevent rush and worry.
* Pack diabetes medications and extra supplies in carry-on bags, not checked luggage (which could be lost or delayed).
You'll enjoy the holidays a lot more if you plan ahead, so you can better cope with potential stressors that impact your mental and physical health. A little preparation makes festive meals, socializing and travel less likely to disrupt your glucose levels.
LaBPT

Afteran Orange County resident flushes her toilet, the water flows through the Southern California community’s sewer system, meanders its way to the sanitation plant, has its solids removed, is piped to a wastewater recycling facility next door and undergoes three different purification processes until it is clean enough to drink.
“It tastes like water,” said Mehul Patel, executive director of operations for the Orange County Water District’s project, after taking a gulp from a clear plastic cup at the sampling station, as he stood outside the final purification process facility on a warm afternoon earlier this month.
“It’s just like any other water, but it’s gone through a lot,” he said. “People shouldn’t judge where it came from, but where it is now.”
No large community in the U.S., not even Orange County, is taking water from toilets and transforming it directly into clean drinking water right now.
But Patel’s demonstration might offer a glimpse of the future, as states and communities across the country design new plants that will do just that, giving communities more control over their water supply as the climate gets drier.
The idea is still new in many parts of the country. And officials face some pushback from skeptics concerned about the high costs of advanced purification systems and from a public not used to the idea of drinking what was once their own waste. Every day, Orange County’s Groundwater Replenishment System, known to the locals as GWRS, purifies 130 million gallons of wastewater coming from 2.5 million residents. It’s the world’s largest

wastewater recycling plant, and the first in the United States to recycle every ounce of its county’s wastewater. This system of pipes, purifiers and chemical reactions has become a required visit for any water official looking to adopt a similar program in another state.
Patel expects more visitors now that California’s top water officials are slated to greenlight new rules later this month that would allow counties to purify their wastewater and inject it immediately into the drinking water supply. If approved, as expected, regulations would go into effect in July.
Currently, all of Orange County’s recycled wastewater is used to replenish its groundwater aquifer
and protect it from seawater intrusion. The water is later pumped out and purified once again to drinking water standards and distributed throughout the county. There are no plans to change this two-part process anytime soon.
Some Golden State communities do the same; others use their recycled wastewater to irrigate fields, water parks or merely dump it into the Pacific Ocean.
But as the state faces a drier future in which the amount of water coming from the Colorado River and the Sierra Nevada Mountains may not be reliable, top water officials say the state needs more sources of drinking water.
“We spend a lot of money and energy moving water from different parts of the state to Southern California, where it’s used once and dumped in the ocean,” said Darrin Polhemus, deputy director of the California State Water Resources Control Board. “That’s maybe not the smartest way to deal with a resiliency question.”
Communities across the country, even beyond the increasingly arid West, have been using recycled wastewater to shore up water supplies drained by larger populations, over-pumped groundwater aquifers, hotter summers and less precipitation.
Facilities are pumping out millions of gallons of recycled wastewater in Arizona, Georgia, Texas and Virginia. Regulators in Colorado, Florida, Iowa and Kansas are considering how to use it. In Arizona, for example, some cities use recycled wastewater to replenish dormant rivers and brew beer; others use it to refill underground aquifers, cool factories or keep parks and golf courses green. But rarely has wastewater gone directly into the drinking water supply.
Daniel McCurry, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Southern California, expects that in two decades at least half of states will adopt wastewater recycling to meet the hydrological demands of a hotter, drier climate.
“Places you wouldn’t normally think of as dry or water-stressed at all are starting to build these plants,” he said. “And that’s only going to accelerate.
“Anywhere that’s primarily reliant on groundwater is going to have water reuse in their future.”
How it works

valley east of the Rocky Mountains.
Directly recycling wastewater into drinking water will eventually allow residents to hold onto more of their precious water supply. Rather than continuing to send treated wastewater into East Plum Creek, where volumes can be lost to evaporation, the town will be able to recycle its municipal water over and over at a water treatment plant that was upgraded in 2021.
“We keep more of a closed loop and we bring that water directly back,” said Mark Marlowe, director of Castle Rock Water, of the incoming system.
While the plant already has the capability, it’s not sending treated wastewater directly to customers yet; Marlowe says it will likely take three to five years to meet new regulations on potable reuse announced by the state in January. The rules include a full year of water quality monitoring and a community awareness campaign before implementation.
While Castle Rock will spend more to comply with those regulations, it also expects to save money on energy costs by reducing the distance water must be moved. And the city’s sewage will actually provide more predictable water quality, Marlowe said. The quality of creek water can vary wildly as salt runs off in the winters or as storms increase sediments in the water.
“There is no new water,” Marlowe said. “It’s really just a question of whether the water is being recycled through natural processes or through manmade engineering solutions.”
In Orange County, the science of turning human waste into clean water is on full display.
After showing a Stateline reporter around the 15acre wastewater recycling plant southeast of Los Angeles, the air around it heavy with the smell of standing water, Patel stopped at three display sinks designed for the tour frequented by local students and water officials from out of town — one filled with amber-tinted water, another yellowish and the third crystal clear, each showing what the wastewater looks like after the three purification steps.
Starting at microfiltration, wastewater is sucked through microscopic holes in hollow plastic fiber. At reverse osmosis, the water is forced through holes 1,000 times smaller in tightly wound membrane sheets, wrapped in fiberglass tubes. And at advanced oxidation, the water is hit with ultraviolet light combined with hydrogen peroxide.
From sewage to drinkable water, the process takes 20 hours.
In the next decade, Southern California cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego plan to recycle wastewater for direct use as drinking water. Both would add more purification steps than what Orange County uses to ensure pathogens are removed before the water reaches consumers.
“As the drought has gotten worse, the interest has increased,” Patel said.
Where it’s going
Even in the typically water-rich Midwest, unpredictable supplies have some communities considering turning wastewater into drinking water.
In southern Iowa, the town of Osceola could become the first in the state to use treated wastewater as part of its drinking supply. Three years of drought have left the town’s West Lake dangerously low, the Des Moines Register reported. The topic came up time and again at a water conference hosted by the Kansas Water Office last month.
In one presentation, Jason Solomon, a technical assistant at the Kansas Rural Water Association, projected a map of the Neosho River pocked with toilet icons marking the dozens of places communities release treated wastewater into the river. Sometimes, those discharges aren’t far from the intake valve of the next town downstream relying on the water.
His point: The current system is only one step removed from directly recycling wastewater. Rivers and reservoirs are as much a mental barrier as a
physical one in terms of water quality, said Solomon, whose group assists small water providers across the state.
He thinks direct wastewater recycling is likely a ways off in Kansas given its stigma and costs. But it’s an idea worth considering with recent droughts threatening drinking water supplies even in the traditionally wettest part of the state.
“Why don’t we just take it directly from the wastewater plant?” he said in an interview. “Why would we put it back in the river? It’s going to get dirtier in the river.”
Public perception is key
Although experts say the science is clear, convincing the public has been a challenge, including in Southern California.
Three decades ago, Los Angeles County sought to bring what the local media dubbed “toilet to tap” to the region, but officials were met with fierce resistance by politicians and residents. It stopped the project.
The “yuck” factor can be challenging, said David Sedlak, director of the Berkeley Water Center at the University of California, Berkeley.
“When you look at some communities where they haven’t done water recycling yet, they have to start building legitimacy from the ground up,” said Sedlak, who recently published a book on water solutions.
“Sometimes that means changing the culture of transparency and openness. And sometimes that means working with the public and bringing them on board to see and understand it.”
Often, people assume the water coming from rivers is cleaner than it really is, Sedlak said; the public may not fully grasp that it can include agricultural runoff or the wastewater from some upstream communities.
A future plant in El Paso, Texas, will include an educational exhibit area so schoolchildren and other visitors can see the science behind the treatment process.
Adjacent to an existing wastewater plant, the $130 million purification facility will send treated wastewater directly back into the drinking water system. Construction is expected to begin next year, but the city has been working to educate and build trust with the public for the past decade, said Christina Montoya-Halter, the communications and marketing director for El Paso Water.
“I don’t want to say it was easy,” she said. “But we are in a different position in El Paso because we’ve been talking about the need to diversify for a long time.”
The city sources water from the Rio Grande and underground aquifers, and runs a desalination plant to treat salty groundwater.
The new treatment plant, which should be running by 2027, is expected to produce up to 10 million gallons per day — or about 6% of the city’s annual needs. But it’s considered a crucial supply since El Paso hasn’t received its full allocation of Rio Grande water in about a decade.
Gilbert Trejo, vice president of engineering, operations and technical services for the utility, said directly treating wastewater will cost roughly double the price of other treatment processes.
Trejo, who serves on the board of a national trade group promoting the use of recycled water, expects directly recycled wastewater will become mainstream as officials increasingly view it as a solution to water shortages.
“It’s not just a solution for arid states and arid regions,” he said. “This also solves a lot of problems in water-rich areas.”

‘No puedes quedarte callado’
ABORTION ISN’T ON THE BALLOT IN CALIFORNIA , BUT STATE CANDIDATES CAN’T STOP TALKING ABOUT IT
Alexei Koseff CalMatters
Acampaign spot flooding TV airwaves in the Sacramento region this election season warns that the incumbent Republican Assemblymember is “backed by anti-abortion extremists” who “know he’ll back their dangerous, anti-choice agenda.”
Residents of the northern Los Angeles suburbs might find their YouTube videos begin with an ominous pre-roll ad declaring the GOP challenger to the local Assemblymember is “too dangerous for our community” because he “would ban abortion.”
And around Palm Springs, a Democratic hopeful is running a commercial that highlights a vote, taken by the Republican senator she is hoping to unseat, against a bill to prohibit criminal prosecution of miscarriages and stillbirths. “Which state Senate candidate will protect reproductive freedom?” the narrator asks.
Though California politicians have affirmed and expanded the state’s commitment to abortion access since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a constitutional right to the procedure two years ago, Democrats running in competitive legislative seats this November are nevertheless making the threat to reproductive health care a central message.
The outcome of any individual race will not substantially change policy at the state Capitol, which has been dominated for decades by Democrats who support abortion rights. But some candidates say their focus on reproductive freedom is a reminder to voters that those victories must be upheld — while also signaling their values during a presidential election where abortion bans have been a frequent topic of debate.
“You need to meet people where they are at all times, and all of us are intimately attuned in Washington, D.C., right now,” said Lisa Middleton, a Democratic city councilmember in Palm Springs who has made reproductive rights the top issue in her campaign against state Sen. Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh, a Redlands Republican. “America is at a crossroads and the decisions we’re making nationally are fundamental.”
All politics is national
Public polling suggests that Californians do not regard abortion rights as one of the most important problems facing the state. In a June survey by the Public Policy Institute of California, voters cited the economy, housing costs and homelessness above all other issues; abortion did not come up enough to rank.
But pollsters nationally have found that it is an increasingly decisive factor in the presidential race, particularly for women. Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, has repeatedly slammed former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, for wanting to restrict abortion access nationwide, a claim that he has denied without being able to explain his position.
Rusty Hicks, chairperson of the California Democratic Party, which is funding some of the abortion-related ads for legislative candidates this fall, said politics has become federalized in recent years, so that what’s happening in the presidential race drives the conversation and voters’ attention down the rest of the ballot. Harris’ urgent campaign message has made Californians wonder what could happen with
abortion here, he said, and whether state Republicans will go after their rights as well.
“California has always been a leader for the country on these important, top-of-mind issues,” Hicks said. “So it’s completely appropriate for voters to consider candidates who are going to protect and preserve their freedoms at the state level.”
Unlike the presidential campaign — where Trump has tried to flip Harris’ support for abortion rights into a weakness by labeling her an extremist — Republicans in California are not hitting back on this issue and many appear to be avoiding it altogether. CalMatters reached out to five GOP legislative candidates who have been the subject of abortionrelated attack ads; only one responded to an interview request.
Jessica Millan Patterson, chairperson of the California Republican Party, said voters are far more concerned about the failure of Democrats, who have long enjoyed total control of state government, to solve more pressing issues such as the cost of living, crime and homelessness. She said abortion rights would not be a winning strategy this election, but Democrats have no alternative.
“I understand it. If I were a California Democrat, I would want to talk about anything but what California voters care about,” she said. “The abortion issue here in California has been asked and answered.”
A bipartisan issue
But Democratic candidates said they’re responding to what they are hearing from their constituents.
Porsche Middleton, a Citrus Heights city councilmember who is trying to win back an Assembly seat in Sacramento County that Democrats unexpectedly lost in 2022, said that when she brings up her core campaign issues — health care, education and the economy — abortion rights is the first thing that voters ask her about.
“They’re very much future-thinking,” she said. “They say their personal freedoms should not be up for debate.”
Though reproductive rights is not a policy area where she plans to introduce legislation if she’s elected, Middleton said highlighting it
“pro-choice with a 100% rating from Planned Parenthood” — an organization that several candidates told CalMatters polls extremely well in their communities.
“It’s frustrating when we see this used as a political football,” said Wallis, who added that his position on abortion rights aligns with his belief in limited government. “It’s a deeply personal decision, which the government should not be involved in.”
The Democrat challenging Wallis — Christy Holstege, another member of the Palm Springs city council — is also running an ad admonishing voters that he was “endorsed by anti-abortion extremists.” Wallis said abortion is probably not an issue he would have brought up before the Supreme Court ruling in 2022 and it is not the priority in his cost of living-focused campaign, but he understands that Californians are worried.
in her campaign is a statement about how she would vote on bills that come before her and draws a sharp distinction with her opponent, Republican Assemblymember Josh Hoover of Folsom, whose position she argues is out of step with the district.
“It’s important to continue having these conversations out loud,” she said. “You don’t want someone who’s going to stand up and put their own personal ideologies ahead of the voters.”
Abortion rights are overwhelmingly popular in California, where 67% of voters agreed to add language about reproductive freedom to the state constitution in the 2022 election. Public polling has even found that most Republicans and conservative-leaning voters are supportive. That gives Democrats a way to reach a broader electorate across an ideologically diverse state, including in more moderate swing districts.
“Generally, keeping government out of people’s lives is important to this community. And it’s a working class district where people value quality health care,” said Kipp Mueller, a Democratic lawyer seeking an open Senate seat in northern Los Angeles County that’s currently held by a Republican.
He’s run a cable ad attacking his GOP opponent for “a record that’s loud and clear against reproductive rights,” including opposing bills to prevent criminal prosecution of pregnancy loss and to make it a crime to record patients and providers at an abortion clinic without their consent.
‘You can’t be silent’
The dynamic has put some Republican candidates on the defensive.
Mueller’s opponent, former Assemblymember Suzette Valladares, released her own digital ad in which she speaks directly to camera about separating her personal “pro-life” beliefs from her approach to legislating, noting that she voted to put the reproductive freedom amendment on the 2022 ballot: “I will stand up for the right of women to make decisions about their own bodies.”
In an Assembly district that stretches through the Riverside County desert, mailers tout that GOP incumbent Greg Wallis of Rancho Mirage, who won by only 85 votes in 2022, is
“We just wanted to be proactive,” he said. “The reality is that California is a pro-choice state. I don’t see that changing anytime soon. But it’s fair for voters to ask where you stand and make sure they’re sending someone to Sacramento who represents their values.”
The California Republican Party, which last year retained opposition to abortion in its platform, is funding the mailers for Wallis.
“When someone is attacking you, you can’t be silent,” Patterson, the party chairperson, said. “You need to be very clear on where you stand on the issues and not let someone else define you when they’re trying to run away from their own records.”
More than a campaign slogan
Beyond the political strategy of focusing on abortion rights, Democrats argue that it’s also an important policy point to raise for voters in legislative races. If Trump wins the presidency, California could find itself fending off challenges to its abortion laws, which are some of the most expansive in the country.
“It’s because we’ve elected state legislators who’ve fought for this,” said Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo, a Democrat locked in a tight race for re-election in the northern Los Angeles suburbs against Republican retired sheriff’s deputy Patrick Lee Gipson. “If we erode that, if we elect extreme anti-abortion people like my opponent, then that continues to build that threat.”
Access to reproductive health care also remains a challenge in some parts of California because of geography and local opposition. Mueller said there is more the state can do to improve the system, as long as it maintains a Democratic majority.
“It’s not as simple as the binary of whether or not [abortion] should exist,” he said. “There’s way more to it.”
And abortion provides candidates an entry point to talk about other health issues, such as in vitro fertilization and transgender care, that have become increasingly contentious in national politics and are far less settled in California.
“As a transgender woman, I have had my health care politicized for all of my adult life,” said Middleton, the Palm Springs-area Senate candidate, who could become California’s first openly transgender legislator. “What I hope will also resonate, if they can do it to me, if they can do it to the women of this country, who’s next?”
Democrats in key legislative races say that abortion rights are under threat nationally so it’s a relevant issue. It could also be a winning issue.

Q&A
SMILE 2: A POPSTAR AND A CURSE MIX INTO SUPERSTAR SIZED TERRORS
Actress and singer-songwriter Naomi Scott on the downsides of fame, how she approached playing a fictional musician, and what she appreciates about the craft of horror films
NaomiScott is an English actress and musician, but despite being in popular media since she was a child she says she is lucky to still be able to go to coffee shops without being recognized, unlike her character in the new horror film, Smile 2, where she portrays an ultra-famous pop star in the same vein as Ariana Grande or Lady Gaga.
Most recognized for her work on the screen as Jasmine in Disney’s live action Aladdin, and as Kimberly the Pink Ranger in the 2018 Power Rangers reboot film, Scott is also a musician who started off her career by using her multiple talents in the Disney TV musical Lemonade Mouth.
In her real music, she croons to soulful pop rhythms and piano ballads; in Smile 2, she had the opportunity to channel a different sort of musician, the pop superstar whose songs are designed with catchy top-40 production and tailored for arena tours. Scott even had the opportunity to co-write some of the original songs that she sings in the film.
In this new sequel to the highly popular 2022 hit Smile, Scott plays Skye Riley, the aforementioned pop superstar who is embarking on a new world tour but is plagued by terrifying visions and events in her life. As the weight of these horrors and her fame begin to chip away at her, she has to look back into her dark past to find a way beyond the ‘smile curse’.
Recently we had the opportunity to speak with Scott about Smile 2, what the experience was of being able to portray a fictional musician and help write music for the character, what she did or didn’t bring in from her real career, and why she has become a recent fan of the horror genre and its exploration of humanity. Smile 2 is now in theaters.
To start off, I wanted to ask if you're a fan of the horror genre in general, and
if the current spooky season is a time when you delve into what the genre has to offer?
So the honest answer to that is that I did not grow up watching horror movies at all. And horror has been something I've genuinely discovered as an adult. And it's been a genre that I've truly fallen in love with. There's so much that I yet have not seen.
I'm by no means a horror expert, however, I think watching horror as an adult, I'm watching it from the perspective of really appreciating the craft of what horror has to offer in terms of It really allows us to explore certain parts of humanity that I think
So Skye is a pop star, and she's someone who is internalizing a lot that she is going through, one could say she's masking, right? And she's about to embark on a global tour, and I think she's both dreading it because she knows that she probably needs to stop and deal with some things that she needs to deal with. But I also think she wants to do it because she then doesn't have to deal with it.
So, I think she's conflicted and is feeling somewhat detached from herself and her own body and the people around her. And there's loneliness that she's feeling because she doesn't feel seen, and
Horror has been something I've genuinely discovered as an adult. And it's been a genre that I've truly fallen in love with.
-Naomi Scott
are hard to talk about. And I think it also just allows artists and filmmakers to really go for something and to take a swing, which I always love because I love things that are potent.
I think some of the greatest movies ever made are horror. The Shining and some of my favorite horror movies, Don't Look Now and Let the Right One In, which are very emotional as well. I cry watching those movies, I think they're beautiful and very poetic. And then, of course, you have the other end of the spectrum, which is jump scares and fun. And it's still always saying something about humanity, but it's highlevel entertainment. So, I'm all in, but I still have a lot to discover.
In Smile 2, you play a pop superstar, Skye Riley. Could you give a little breakdown about your character and her motivations, and how she ends up in this “smile situation”?
she doesn't feel like she can open up to people around her. So, as she then comes into contact with a smile curse, I think what that does both physically and emotionally is begin to peel back some of those layers to reveal what really is going on.
And since you are involved in the world of music as well as acting, what was that experience of stepping in to the role of a musician in the film? And where did you pull inspiration from, whether it be personal or from other areas for Skye?
Yeah, great question. It was really fun because I'm truly playing a character, even in the studio. When I signed on to do the project, there were three songs that were written for Skye already. So there were already things in motion about who she was as an artist. And two of the songs were written and produced by Idarose (Alexis Kesselman), and her vocals were on the
demos, and I really felt like that was my blueprint, and that was going to be my way in in terms of how she sung.
So Alexis was really the way in which I found Skye's voice. And we worked together to figure out how she's singing, and in terms of producing, how Alexis produced the vocals. And I'm singing in the American accent. I'm really leaning into that, and we got to co-write two songs together as well, one of which is the end credit song, “Death of Me”.
And we actually wrote that after I'd shot the movie. So it was fun because I feel like we'd solidified her sound by that point, and we could just have the most fun, and it was amazing. But yes, very much I'm in character. So I think that was my way in, and it was fun to do things that I would not do as an artist myself.
Removing the supernatural aspect of it, how did the role connect to you in your own life being in the public eye, and in which ways, if any?
Well, I think I have the privilege of moving through the world relatively obscurely in the sense that I can live my life and go to a coffee shop. And that's not the case for Skye. She cannot just be in public. And I think that can isolate a person because You feel like eyes are on you constantly, which is people constantly looking at you, perceiving you, but not really knowing you.
So, I think that's something I guess I've been around and understand to a degree. So maybe I think some of that was there already. But I also think all of us can see that happening and see the pressures of it, whether we engage in or are complicit in it as a society or not.
I think we've all witnessed that happen countless times in terms of someone who is being intensely perceived and maybe needs to have an injection of obscurity in their life in order to heal and deal with things.

The Shining y algunas de mis películas de terror favoritas, Don't Look Now y Let the Right One In, que
