Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR Much concern exists regarding the economic disparities extant in the American domestic economy. Those concerned with 'income disparities' have tried to use 'income tax credits' (IRS rebates to those having very low gross incomes). The challenge is to motivate those low income individuals to actually apply for their 'income tax credit rebate' by actually filing their IRS 1040 form when they know that they owe no taxes. Also there is no profit for tax preparation services when servicing these tax filers. Another concept/nidel, UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME (UBI), was presented by Fareed Zakaria, Global Public Square (GPS) on Sunday, October 16, 2016 (MSNBC). Zakaria reported,”Amidst concerns that Donald Trump may have paid no IRS income taxes for decades, many Americans are searching for ways to even the

BALANCING INCOME DISPARITIES economic playing field. One concept that keeps popping up is: “Should the federal government send each adult individual a check for a healthy amount every year? How would you like to receive a check each year for, let's say, $15,000? (Let's) explain how that would work.” “Is UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME (UBI) the right model which will be accepted by by a broad sector of Americans? (Especially those who pay income taxes.) This concept may be debated over the next 20 years.” stated President Obama in a recent interview (Wired Magazine). Fareed said, “We will not wait 20 years for that debate (because) we will have it right now. It is called the 'Universal Basic Income (UBI).' Imagine each American citizen receiving a check from the federal government each year for, let's say, $10,000, no questions asked. You do not have to do anything to become eligible. Being a U.S. citizen is enough. Why should the government do this? “Well, it is under consideration around the world and even being tested in a handful of nations.” said Zakaria. “You see, technology is now replacing more and more jobs that now humans do.
Western societies produce much wealth, however that wealth has a distribution skewed very unequally. The UBI is a way to deal with the unemployment or underemployment that appears to have become a feature of modern western life (and society). In other words, if you are a truck driver and an autonomous vehicle put you out of your job, you would have (receive) some income to fall back on. Let's debate this issue further.” Chris Hughes is a co-founder of Facebook and a supporter of UBI. Eduardo Porter is more skeptical of this UBI idea. Eduardo is a columnist in economics for the New York Times. “Chris, How did you come to think about (UBI)? Watching IT and Facebook develop must have had something to do with this.” Chris made the following points: 1) the world is changing incredibly fast; 2) government welfare agencies are not keeping up nor coping well; 3) the nature of work is changing; redefining itself; 4) It’s a 'gig economy; 5) society's safety net has not enlarged as quickly in size and effectiveness.
The UBI idea is really Social Security for All...a check from government that enables individuals to make choices & live their lives as they see fit.' This UBI idea is pretty crisp and clear.” Fareed, “Do you really think that automation will really eliminate so many jobs that there is not enough work for people to do?” Chris: “Probably, but the whole argument that robots will take away jobs (or maybe not take them away) is a lot about procedures (and process). But this is the present reality: America's family household income today is not what it was some 25 years ago. People are trying to adapt.” When interviewed by Fareed: Eduardo Porter made the following points: 1) The future is already here with many families struggling to make ends meet. 2) These sorts of predictions have been made for about 100 years; 3) Automation and robotics have changed the labor market; 4) New jobs and products are created or produced to meet new demands and needs. 5) Agricultural production labor dropped from 67% down to 2%; 6) Government needs to begin to implement UBI programs.
Economist Milton Friedman recommended 'government giving money to the impoverished as an effective way to cope with poverty & welfare needs. Morales points out that the low income individual has a 100% propensity to spend their money as consumers buying essential goods and services. This sustains the American Consumer economy at a reasonable social and economic cost. When autonomous vehicles are fully developed by Google and others, many workers who drive on their jobs (cars, buses, trucks) may become unemployed. Another important point: In Norway, all income tax information is available online in the public domain as a means of ensuring that income disparities are minimal. Anyone can learn what a coworker earns; what his/her boss and supervisor earns. This feature keeps income tax payment avoidance at a very low level. Take note that a liberal economic ideology is essential to having the present income disparity issues addressed.

Recién celebramos el Mes de la Herencia Hispana y tenemos muchas razones para confortarnos: Las tasas de deserción escolar latina están en uno de sus niveles más bajos de la historia, menos latinos viven en la pobreza y el acceso de nuestra comunidad al cuidado médico tiene niveles sin precedentes. Pero también es verdad que tenemos serios desafíos pendientes, pues seguimos padeciendo una crisis de salud que está devastando a nuestras comunidades y que es provocada por el contagio desproporcionado del VIH sobre los latinos, un problema que se complica aún más por el estigma de las barreras culturales y del idioma entre nuestra comunidad. Es un hecho indudable que el primer paso para resolver un problema es reconociendo su existencia. Y sin embargo apenas uno de cada dos
latinos o latinas ha hablado del VIH con amigos o familiares en el último año, y aún en estos casos no siempre tienen a la mano la información relevante. Más de 220,000 latinos viven con el VIH y un 23 por ciento de los nuevos contagios del virus corresponderá a los latinos, un porcentaje muy por encima del 17 por ciento de nuestra proporción en la población en general. Su impacto para el futuro de nuestra comunidad es alarmante: 1 de 36 varones latinos y una en cada 106 latinas serán diagnosticados con el HIV en el curso de su vida, si no logramos revertir las tendencias actuales. ¿Qué hacer? Lo primero es entender que el VIH no es motivo de vergüenza. Los contagios se pueden prevenir. Todo empieza con esa primera conversación con tu familia, tus amigos, tus colegas o tus compañeros de la escuela. Te sorprenderás del alivio que representa ese primer paso. no sólo hacia tu bienestar y tú futuro,
sino al de todos los que te rodean. Denise Chacón, coordinadora juvenil del Aids Project East Bay (APEB) está en el frente de esta batalla y como joven latina está consciente no sólo de las dificultades para iniciar esa primera conversación, sino también de las recompensas en materia de salud física y emocional. “No siempre es fácil hablar del VIH, pero tenemos que hablar abiertamente sobre el tema para proteger a nuestra comunidad. Si nos educamos sobre el VIH y conversamos sobre las distintas maneras de protegernos y proteger a nuestros seres queridos y a nuestra comunidad, podemos aumentar el conocimiento, reducir el estigma y la vergüenza que muchas veces se asocian con el VIH”, comenta. Es verdad. Estudios muestran que en el caso del VIH/SIDA, el simple inicio de una conversación abierta sobre el tema conduce a la discusión de formas de prevención, uso de preservativos y la realización de pruebas de detección del VIH.
Basta acudir a cualquier clínica para quedar impresionado por el profesionalismo y la sensibilidad con la que los trabajadores de la salud se conducen con todas las latinas y latinos que buscan información o hacerse una prueba, así como con quienes son seropositivos y buscan tratamientos. Tenemos razones de sobra para asegurarnos de que el VIH y el SIDA no se conviertan en una condena de muerte. Qué mejor momento para iniciar en este mismo momento esa conversación que podría salvar nuestra propia vida, en lo individual y como comunidad. Prop 55 Supporters Take Case to Campuses Across State a big difference for California schoolchildren.
"Prop 55 continues funding that is essential for K-12," he said. "These funds have been used in our district to help support music and science education for kinder-through-thirdgrade students, as well as to help install air conditioning equipment to help those same students when it gets super hot outside."

Suzanne Potter California News Service IRVINE, Calif. - The campaign to pass Proposition 55 took a stand on campuses across California this week, with rallies on Monday at UC Irvine and Back Bay High School in Costa Mesa, and two more in Santa Cruz on Wednesday and Riverside on Thursday.
Proposition 55 would maintain taxes on the wealthy that were established by Prop 30 four years ago and are set to expire. The accompanying half-cent sales tax would not be renewed. Prop 55 is expected to generate $7 billion a year for K-12 and community colleges. Britt Dowdy, president of the Newport-Mesa Federation of Teachers, said the funds make
Opponents of Prop 55 argue that the tax on high-income families was only supposed to be temporary and should be allowed to expire, since the economy has improved over the past few years. But Rob Schneiderman, president of the Coast Federation of Educators, representing the faculty of the Coast Community College District, said the money rebuilt California's public-education system after the drastic cuts during the recession eight years ago. "We've been able to maintain, not have any layoffs, and we've added classes," he said. "We're really helping the community, and it's because of Prop 55 money, whereas other
states that did tax cuts are laying people off right now." Andrew Tonkovich, president of the University Council-American Federation of Teachers at UC-Irvine, even dressed up like Uncle Sam to grab attention and get people talking about the issues. "Of course we're interested in the health of public education in California generally, and we're interested in maintaining the highest quality of instruction and infrastructure and student services," he said. Partidarios de la Propuesta 55 llevan su caso a los Campus de todo el estado Suzanne Potter California News Service IRVINE, Calif. - La campana para aprobar la Propuesta 55 fue definiendo esta semana su postura en los Campus de todo California, con manifestaciones ayer en U-C Irvine y en la escuela Back Bay en Costa Mesa - y dos mas en Santa Cruz y Riverside el jueves 20 de octubre, 2016. La Propuesta 55 mantendria los impuestos a los ricos, que fueron establecidos por la Propuesta 30 hace cuatro anos y estan a punto de expirar. El impuesto que le acompana, de medio centavo de impuesto sobre las ventas, no seria renovado. Se espera que la Propuesta 55 genere $7 billones por ano desde Kinder hasta doceavo grado, y "Community Colleges" (Colegios Comunitarios). Britt Cowdy, presidente de la Federacion de Maestros de Newport Mesa, dice que los fondos marcan una gran diferencia para los ninos escolares de California. "La Propuesta 55 sigue aportando fondos esenciales para el K-12. En nuestro distrito se han usado para ayudar a mantener la educacion en musica y ciencia para alumnos

Pero Rob Shcneiderman, de la Federacion de Educadores de la Costa, y en representacion de la facultad de "Community College" del Distrito de la Costa, dice que el dinero reconstruyo el sistema de educacion publica de California luego de los drasticos recortes durante la recesion de hace 8 anos. "Hemos podido mantenernos, no tener despidos y hemos agregado clases. Realmente estamos ayudando a la comunidad, y eso se debe al dinero de la Propuesta 55. Mientras tanto, otros estados que redujeron impuestos estan ahora despidiendo maestros." Andrew Tonkovich, presidente del Consejo Universitario de la Federacion Americana de Maestros en la UC de Irvine, incluso

KIDS WATERMELON PIZZA SUPREME Servings: 6 1 watermelon slice (8-10 inches around and 1-inch thick), drained 1 cup strawberry preserves 1/2 cup white chocolate chips 1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1 cup sweetened shredded coconuts Place watermelon slice on serving platter and cut into 6 wedges, leaving in shape of pizza.
On cutting board, place watermelon on its side and use kitchen knife to cut off 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch from bottom (end opposite stem), being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind. Cut 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch from stem end to create opening large enough to fit small bowl. Using dry erase marker, draw eyes, nose and mouth, along with wavy slits around carving to let more light flow through. Use paring knife to cut out design, being sure to cut through to red fruit. Use fluted or regular melon baller to hollow out inside of watermelon. Use scoop to

Spread preserves over watermelon and sprinkle chocolate chips, raisins, walnuts and coconut. FROSTED, FROZEN WATERMELON BALLS Servings: 35-40 1 small watermelon 1 package (3 ounces) watermelon or other red flavor gelatin dessert Using melon baller, scoop out 35-40 small watermelon balls. Place on paper towels and set aside. Pour gelatin into shallow bowl. One-by-one, gently drop watermelon balls into bowl, roll around, take out and place on plate covered with paper towel. Repeat until all gelatin is used. Place plate of frosted watermelon balls in freezer. Allow at least 2 hours to make sure they are completely frozen. Remove from freezer and let sit a few minutes before eating. Note: To serve with toothpicks, place toothpicks in before freezing to aid in serving.

CLIMATE CHANGE HAS DOUBLED THE AREA BURNED BY FOREST FIRES IN THE WEST Suzanne Potter California News Service SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Anyone who lives in the western United States is familiar with the massive fires that rage every summer, and a report out Monday says climate change has doubled the amount of acreage burned since 1984. Researchers from the University of Idaho and Columbia University found that further warming will accelerate this trend in the future. Study co-author John Abatzoglou, a professor of geography at the University of Idaho, said climate change has increased what scientists call "fuel aridity." "Since climate change has basically shifted our fuels to be drier than they would have been in the absence of climate change," Abatzoglou said, "we use that relationship to get an estimate of the additional area that has burned due to man-made climate change."
The study found that natural variability in weather patterns has combined with climate change to compound the problem. Statistics show that more than 8,700 wildland fires burned almost 900,000 acres in California in 2015. Abatzoglou said the acreage that has burned in the Western U.S. since 1984 due to climate change equals an area more than three times the size of Los Angeles County.

Unaccompanied minors migrating from Central American countries to the U.S. because of gang crime and violence is on the rise again. The migration explosion of these unaccompanied children, primarily from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala—the countries making up the “Northern Triangle” region— prompted President Obama in 2014 to call it a “humanitarian crisis” and order an emergency government response to address the crisis. However, border enforcement measures to stem the flow of migrants entering Mexico, along with enhanced border security efforts in Central America and an aggressive U.S. public relations campaign to dissuade Central American migrants from making the journey North, for a while contributed to a decrease in the number of migrant children and families arriving at the Southern border in Texas. By Raul Ray, Esq. A recent increase of unaccompanied children fleeing Central America and being detained at the US border in Texas could spark a repeat of the 2014 migrant crisis. Almost 68,000 unaccompanied children were apprehended between October 1, 2013 to September 30, 2014, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), an agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Predictably, the presidential candidates have espoused contrasting views on how they would deal with our broken immigration system. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has suggested that she would consider a policy of not deporting undocumented immigrants who do not violate U.S. laws. Republican nominee Donald Trump has said he would seek to deport most, if not all, of the estimated 11-12 million people living in the United States illegally. The Obama Administration is determined to treat migrants in a humane manner while at the same time enforcing the country’s immigration laws consistent with the administration’s enforcement priorities according to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson. However, the unprecedented volume of unaccompanied minors and families presenting themselves at the U.S. border in Texas has simply overwhelmed the U.S. immigration courts responsible for ruling on asylum cases with no relief in sight soon. Dana Leigh Marks — an immigration judge in San Francisco and president of the National Association of Immigration Judges (NAIJ) — described hearings in her courtroom
as “basically death penalty cases” with children at risk of returning to life-threatening situations. While we wait to see how the migration crisis and the state of immigration in general will play out after the elections, one thing is certain to continue to happen. That is unaccompanied minors and families from extremely violent regions in Central America Countries, particularly, El Salvador and Honduras, will continue to present themselves in great numbers at U.S. borders seeking refugee status. They undoubtedly see no choice but to embrace the risk of traveling alone to the United States as preferable to remaining at home and facing terrible harm due to gang crime and violence. U.S.-based Lockheed Martin is branching out from defense contracting in assisting with the design of Ocean Power Technologies' (OPT) PowerBuoy technology to harness electricity from off-shore wave farms, as deployed here off the coast of Victoria, Australia.
Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EarthTalk Wave power advocates cheered in September 2016 when Hawaiibased Naval researchers started feeding power from two experimental offshore wave energy devices into the grid on nearby Oahu, representing the first time the American public could access electricity derived from ocean waves. The trickle of energy from these experimental devices doesn’t amount to anything substantial yet, but wave energy’s potential is huge. Analysts think we could derive at least a quarter of U.S. electricity needs by harnessing wave power around our coasts. Most other countries around the world have coastlines they could exploit for wave energy, as well, if engineers could create affordable technology to capture and transport the energy back to shore where it would be used to power local communities or get fed into existing larger power grids. But just because we can tap ocean energy big time doesn’t mean we necessarily will, given the high costs of getting started, technical issues with maintaining offshore equipment, and the challenges of scaling up for mass consumption. The world’s first experimental wave farm, the Aguçadoura Wave Park off the coast of Portugal, went online in September 2008 with three wave energy converter machines, but ceased operations only two months later when bearings on the equipment gave way, underscoring the technical challenges of running complicated heavy machinery in unstable marine environments. While such technical problems may be frustrating, financial concerns loom larger over wave energy’s future. Two of the biggest wave energy endeavors in the world, Pelamis and Aquamarine, both based out of wave-battered Scotland, went belly up recently despite funding from the Scottish government and plans to build out the biggest wave energy farms in the world based on the success of earlier prototypes.
Aquamarine’s CEO John Malcolm chalked up his company’s demise to “the considerable financial, regulatory and technical challenges faced by the ocean energy sector as a whole.” Meanwhile, cheap natural gas and the surge in solar and wind power options have kept ocean energy on the back burner. But wave power is far from dead in the water. Besides the experimental wave farm off Oahu, two larger projects are being built off the coast of the United Kingdom, while three additional projects are underway around Australia. Funding for these projects has come from not only the host governments but also the private sector. American defense contractor Lockheed Martin, for one, is a big player in deployment of wave power technologies and is a driving force behind the 19 megawatt, grid-connected wave power station currently in the works near Victoria, Australia. Here in the U.S., wave energy advocates say the federal government has done too little to encourage research and development in this promising niche of the energy sector. Subsidies and tax incentives helped solar and wind power grow from pipe dreams in the 1980s to significant players in the global energy mix of today. Wave power advocates would like to see similar incentives employed to boost the development of oceanbased renewable energy sources, but for that to happen the American public will need to speak up to get Congress to act. Lo que me gusta del arte en general, es su poder de comunicación. Creo fervientemente, que una pintura habla mas que mil palabras. Y eso es lo que trato de transmitir en mi arte, un mensaje de esperanza y de superación o a veces hacer un llamado a la reflexión frente a una problemática social o política.

Su arte se enfoca en momentos humanos, y todos los sentimientos que siente la gente. Adelante encontrara una conversación con el artista, cuyas obras aparecen en nuestra publicación cada semana. Cómo fue su niñez? Nací en Lima, la capital del Peru, en un barrio de clase media. Mi infancia fue como la de cualquier otro niño, lleno de gratos momentos entre amigos del vecindario y la escuela. ¿Cómo fue que se le interesó el dibujo y arte? El amor por el arte fue algo que cultive desde muy pequeño, a la edad de 9 años. Fue a través de una lecciones de arte de la Argentina, que me presto el tío de un buen amigo, con que empecé a aprender a dibujar. ¿Cuales han sido sus influencias, y si en la actualidad tiene unos? No puedo decir, que haya sido influenciado por algún artista en particular, pero quizás a uno que admiro es a Boris Vallejo, un artista peruano que triunfo grandemente en los Estados Unidos haciendo muchos trabajos de ilustración y comics. ¿Que fue su proceso de entrenamiento? ¿Cuales escuelas o que tipo de práctica uso para perfeccionar sus habilidades como artista? Tuve en mis inicios, una formación audidacta, mas adelante ingrese a la universidad donde estudie arquitectura, y adquirí una formación

No no mas hace caricaturas de política. ¿Que son otras artes visuales y que es algo específico que le gusta sobre estos medios diferentes? Aparte de la caricatura política, me dedico a la ilustración de libros , pintura de paisajes y retratos. Esta una carrera muy competitiva y pienso que el artista debe estar preparado para realizar cualquier proyecto. Pero si me preguntas, cual es mi especialidad preferida, diría la ilustración de libros. Es un proceso largo y de trabajo en equipo, pero hay una gran satisfacción al final cuando ves tu libro impreso y en el estante de alguna librería. ¿Puede hablar un poco sobre su trabajo en los cuentos infantiles? Desde el punto de vista de un ilustrador, hacer cuentos infantiles, demanda mucha destreza y habilidad, ya que las ilustraciones son una parte muy importante en el éxito del libro. Muchas veces hay que estar en el pensamiento de un niño para que tu ilustración sea entendida por ellos. Mi ultimo libro publicado para niños, “Beauford Peever’s Animal Family” me trajo mucha satisfacción, ya que es la primera vez que soy el autor e ilustrador a la vez. Es la historia acerca de un niño que su gran pasión es leer y aprender acerca de todo tipo de animales, y como en un buen día, descubre un gran secreto en su familia. Es un libro muy divertido y que esta pensado como una serie de libros. Well definitely when we were doing it we were aware that’s why I’ve been participating in a few films knowing that it is a very important one because it is not only about what happens in the United States and Mexico, it’s what happens everywhere in the world. We’ve reached this point of discussing migration, in a criminalizing way, and we need to understand that the issue of migration can be accepted as a natural phenomenon and we have to incorporate new ways of talking about this issue without criminalizing something that will happen naturally, and the world needs it to happen in order for things to exist. What was it like working with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Sam the unrelenting 'vigilante' hunting down the group of immigrants?
OCTOBER 21-27, 2016 Some of them were not professional actors, the vast majority were not professional actors actually. A couple of them had lived through this, crossing the desert, the rest hadn’t lived that but they were well aware of what was going on and because we are all migrants and human beings, we feel a personal relationship to it. This film has elements of horror and mania. How can a film like Desierto speak to actual situations faced by immigrants? Films can be a great vehicle to unveil a problem, to signal a situation, something that needs to be talked about and discussed, and I think this film portrays our biggest nightmare. What happens when this hate speech is validated. Why should audiences see Desierto?
I didn't get a chance to work that much with him, but I like the work he does in the film. He’s a really good actor and a really good companion as well and it was interesting to finally meet him, while filming, because he was chasing me. [laughs] In the film there is a large group of migrants, including your character, Moises. Did you and the crew feel any connection to the plight of immigrants? Where they all professional actors?

Arturo Hilario El Observador Jonás Cuarón, (son of Alfonso Cuarón), brings a cinematic, terror-inducing thriller with Desierto. In the film, a group of hopeful immigrants crossing into the United States at the Mexican border are met with a a horrifying situation as they are hunted by a 'patriot'. Gael García Bernal's character Moises is part of the immigrant group trying to make their way through a tough desert landscape when the 'coyote' truck they are in breaks down before its intended destination. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays the antagonist Sam, delivers an intense performance as he victimizes the group, giving off that vibe you can find on your local hate Twitter account. Throughout the film, he gives quips to his dog, Tracker, on how he hates what this country has become, and insight on why he is choosing to hunt down human beings who are tired and just trying to get to a better life, much like Europeans 396 years ago (All while kicking back whiskey).
An amalgamation of the Alt-Right, Sam's goal is to rid the desert of what he might consider vermin, all the while the survivors of the group, eventually led by García Bernal's Moises fearfully fight to survive. The cinematography is great, and the younger Cuarón wrote and directed a strong thriller that at times feels asphyxiating, and sadly, might not be far from truth. Below, García Bernal talks about immigration, and how he feels about working on Desierto Hi Gael, can you tell me how you became involved with this project? I’ve known Jonas for a long long time and it is a subject matter that I am very interested in. I’ve been doing a few short film documentaries and also feature films documentary about this issue so it was a natural collaboration. When creating this film, did you know it could be an important commentator on the current state of immigration?
It is a pretty good film, it is entertaining, at the same time it will make a comment on what’s happening in our countries with our people, and also gives it instigates an inner reflection on how we need to establish new politics and new ways of speaking on coming together. En conmemoración al Mes de la Herencia Hispana, Los Raiders se dieron la tarea de compartir su tiempo con comunidades infantiles de Oakland para aprender y educar a los chicos sobre la historia del ballet folclórico y su significado para la herencia de Mexico y la cultura Latinoamericana. If you’ve opted in to paperless billing, you should also consider printing out bank statements and any other financial or medical documents that you are likely to need if you are cut off from your cloud storage or if your files are maliciously erased. A natural disaster caused it to happen in New York City on Monday, October 29, 2012, during Hurricane Sandy. By midnight, power was knocked out below 39th Street – it did not return for a week. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone lines stopped working as their battery backups drained. Even the old copper wire telephone network was down where the cables were submerged. Cell service was gone by late Tuesday evening and spotty (if you could charge your phone) until the end of the week. All VoIP phone communication was down by Wednesday. There was no Internet, no power, no water pressure, no traffic lights, no street lights, no basic social services – and Manhattan got off easy. The effects were much, much worse in the greater New York Metro and in New Jersey.
Not for nothing, I don’t think strong passwords are going to cut it anymore. It’s time to back up your computer and your smartphone and to do your best to safeguard your important files, pictures, recordings and videos (especially original material that cannot be replaced).
All in, it is estimated that Superstorm Sandy caused $65 billion in damages in the US alone. A cyber-attack wouldn’t destroy buildings or roadways, so you might think it would not be as costly. But that would depend on the extent of the damage and the duration of the event.
Quite a bit has been written about how to back up your data. I won’t rehash it here. The general theory is to have your data replicated in a couple of places. Services such as Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, iCloud, and the like all offer various versions of instantaneous synching between your local storage and the cloud. But most smart people also backup locally to an external drive with tools such as Time Machine (Mac) or File History and Windows Backup and Restore (Windows 10). A backup on a local, physical hard drive that is not connected to the public Internet is a very good idea.
