Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR I attended the annual meeting sponsored by Supervisor Joe Simitian, District 5, Board of Supervisors, County of Santa Clara this past Sunday, at the Lucy Stern Community Center, Palo Alto, CA. The theme was “ANGER AND ANXIOUSTHE VOTER REVOLT OF 2016; Where did it come from? What does it mean? And will it last?”. The panelists were The Honorable Libby Schaaf, Mayor, Oakland; Dan Schnur, Director, Jesse Unruh Institute of Politics, U.S.C., and David Metz, Partner, FM3 Opinion Research. A standing room only crowd attended. The introduction of elected officials and candidates took some time to accomplish. Carl Guardino, President and CEO, Silicon Valley Leadership Group personally was distributing small jars of 'Support Measure B' cinnamon flavored apple jam. Supervisor Simitian presided as moderator. Oakland's Mayor Libby Schaaf

VOTER ANGER, DISAPPOINTMENT AND FRUSTRATION said that the voter outrage was selective. Since 2008, the U.S. Congress and state legislatures have been ineffective. The legislative process at both the federal and state levels had not taken care of the nation's business (really 'the people's business'). So many public policy and infrastructural matters were now being taken care of by local government jurisdictions. An example was Measure B dealing with local transportation issues. The basic practice is to not show up at Washington or Sacramento unless you brought along 'lots of matching funds'. Libby said, “I believe in America's Democracy. The Republican Party is handcuffed by its Tea Party conservatives; lobbyists have too much money; and the legislative process at the federal level is gridlocked by extreme partisan politics. The public is anxiously dealing with income disparities while costs of goods or services continues to increase. The only bright spot is the current low cost of gasoline.” Simitian said, “The 'Yes on Measure B' effort was necessary to leverage federal funding. It took local action to get things moving. Frightened people look to blame others.”
David Metz stated, “Since the Reagan Administration (1975), the 'Mean Network' only rewards its own. Reagan said, 'Someone who disagrees with me 80% of the time is my enemy; Someone who agrees with me is my supporter.' The result is that public policy issues were not debated in a 'pro & con' manner which led to understanding and compromise required to craft legislation. Only 4% listen to National Public Radio (NPR) and Rush Limbaugh to hear both perspectives. Some 92% are not listening at all to either the liberal or conservative perspectives. Many do not know enough to think about public policy issues. Conversations between individuals having opposing viewpoints is not happening.”
generational. Current political climate is a reflection of society's state of mind.”
Joe Simitian stated, “There is a need to have civil conversations between parties having opposing viewpoints and ideas (liberal and conservative). The result is voters who are both angry and anxious. What the hell happened? And what is going to happen?”
What should we be doing to cope? asked Joe Simitian. “Changes are happening so fast that it outstrips the ability of government to deal with its impact on all of us. Our kids will face a future with fewer opportunities. My kids will be worse off than me! We must become aware that we are all in this together.”
Metz: “45% of voters are angry; 10% frustrated and 9% are pleased today. The most angry are the millennials and wealthy. It is not about ideology; it is
Dan Schnur said, “What is going on in society is that millennials experienced the 2008 financial crash. Millennials experienced an industrial manufacturing economy transformed into an information technology based economy. One candidate identified with them and said 'Only I know how to fix that.' Millennials have been told they are special and they believed it. Since 2008 both Bernie Sanders and Donald J. Trump connected with millennials who are anti-establishment. This coming November 9th is very important because then we will know if we can put this nation together again.”
What was not discussed was current reality: The top 0.1%, as an outcome of their power,
money and influence, have ended up with most of the wealth. Wealth is not being distributed to those who would use it to maintain the domestic economy's infrastructures and the payments for essential goods and services. The past systems offered opportunity to earn a living; today it takes two or more part-time jobs with no health care or retirement benefits. The ultra-wealthy do not realize that these consumers who live from paycheck to paycheck are essential to having the American Consumer economy function well. When the working class have no discretionary income, no 'consumer choices' about education, housing, starting families, etc. are made. Most importantly, they do not have time to be engaged in local, state and federal governance. Without their 'monitoring involvement' Democracy fails to equitably distribute all sorts of goods, services, access and opportunity. If that does not change, a citizen's voter revolt is inevitable. Today the top 0.1% are unaware that the 'American Consumer Economy' is on the brink of collapse because most individuals no longer believe in the “American Dream”... which is why voters are angry, disappointed and frustrated.

'YES' ON A FOR OUR NEIGHBORS
Father Jon Pedigo Director of Peace and Justice Projects, Dioses of San Jose Being a disciple of Christ requires a willingness to put others first. If we wish to be his disciple, we must be ready to embrace the leper, protect the widow and orphan, and love our enemy. The disciple must be able to identify with, understand and appreciate the hardships of those who are in fact poor. Our Christian faith demands that we take on the cross of responsibility for our neighbor and identify, embrace and ultimately advocate for those who are the poorest of the poor. We must embrace our neighbor as one of our own. Jesus asks a fundamental question of us: will we be able to take responsibility for our poor neighbors? Real discipleship requires a conscious decision to participate in the work of creating a new world organized around the concept of equality. We live in a world where many people suffer violence and extreme poverty and yet we do not see them. We live in a world that is divided, where those of us who are privileged are shielded from seeing the hardships that other people endure. Our faith calls us to take the time to hear, see and feel the world of our neighbor. Pope Francis said, “Each individual Christian and every community is called to be an instrument of God for the
NOVEMBER 4 - 10, 2016 liberation and promotion of the poor, and for enabling them to be fully a part of society.” Each day is an opportunity for us to pay attention to the cry of the working poor, to pay attention to their voice and to come to their assistance. We must hear their story and be moved to action. I am asking that you consider the power of participating in the democratic franchise of voting. I will not tell you how to vote, but I simply ask that you consider how your vote will help our sister or brother. This year we have many issues to think about. Our community may be asking us to consider how we will deal with affordable housing. In Santa Clara County, Measure A, if it passes, will build thousands of dwellings—hogares—for our homeless neighbors, for veterans, low-income seniors and victims of violence and abuse. Remember, “Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless.” When we vote next month, we must ask ourselves, “how will my choice help alleviate the suffering of the poor?” We need to take our right to vote seriously, to study the issues, make righteous choices and ensure that the poor and homeless are in our hearts, our prayers and our votes.

Suzanne Potter California News Service SACRAMENTO, Calif.

CROWD-PLEASING GAME DAY GRILLING Family Features For millions of football fans, the grill is as important as the gridiron when enjoying a weekend of games. There’s nothing like team spirit, the anticipation of kickoff and the smell of a delicious pregame tailgate wafting through the stadium parking lot. National barbecue expert Rocky Stubblefield of Stubb’s Legendary BarB-Q offers tips and recipes for game day grilling that will have the whole crowd cheering. Keep it simple Stubblefield says anything that cooks fast on the grill is great for tailgating – burgers, hotdogs, chicken – and to bring on the flavor without having to pack a
carload of ingredients, use sauces, rubs and marinades. Prepare as much food as you can ahead of time and have a checklist for the things you always need but are easy to forget, like napkins and tin foil. Grilling tips For perfectly shaped, evenly cooked burgers, make a thumbprint in the middle of each patty before grilling. Amp up the flavor by rubbing your burgers with Stubb’s Bar-B-Q rub before putting them on the grill – just like you would a brisket or ribs. No matter what you’re making, wait to put the sauce on until the very end of grilling to avoid charring and burning. For dozens of easy, delicious tailgating recipes, visit <stubbsbbq.com>.

News of these funding shortages doesn't surprise anyone. A decade of budgetary shortfalls and severe cuts from the State of California have conspired to leave us with roads in serious need of repair. While the cost appears daunting, we must tackle this expensive challenge immediately. Why the urgency?

I started my term as mayor 20 months ago confronting a monstrously large and growing unfunded maintenance backlog -- more than $521 million for our streets and roads alone -without any obvious source of funding to address those needs. I told one radio station that absent winning the lottery, "We'll repurpose the potholes as 'traffic calming devices.'"
YouTube.com
First, because poor roads affect us all. For example, a typical San José driver incurs about $863 in additional expenses annually in the form of poorer fuel mileage efficiency, blown tires, bent rims and greater wear-and-tear on the vehicle as a result of bad roads. Keep in mind that the problem isn't confined to those who own a car; 100% of our bike and bus trips rely on the same roads as our cars -- and to cyclists like me, poor streets pose a serious safety risk. Second, the cost of doing nothing greatly exceeds the cost of fixing the road. Transportation experts say that investing $1 in our roads today -- such as for resealing or modest repairs -- will save more than $5 in the future, by avoiding the costly replacement of failed streets. The cost of doing nothing is stark: Our $521 million repair backlog would grow to $880 million by 2020 if we merely continue the funding patterns of the last decade. Making matters worse, state cuts in gas tax funding and other funding reductions have slashed the amount of road repair money available to the City of San José in half. As a result, we started this year with only $13 million in ongoing
funding to maintain our roads -- even though restoring our streets to a state of good repair will require just over $100 million every year for the next decade. That's left us with the task of finding funding to fill this enormous gap. Are there alternatives to simply spending more money? To be sure, we have implemented more cost-effective methods of restoring road pavement, such as cold-in-place pavement recycling and repair. We can always cut other city expenditures -- such as police or libraries -but that comes at a great cost to our community, particularly after a decade in which we saw services cut year-after-year and our workforce shrink by almost one-third. And of course, we continue to seek ways to control costs, such as by securing the savings of pension reform through Measure F this November. At the end of the day, though, there is no shortcut. There's no "app" to fix a road. It simply costs money to address, and it costs even more money if we ignore it. This year, we have taken several approaches to tackle this funding gap. First, I introduced -- and the City Council approved -- a budget that halted new spending in order to focus our scarce dollars on "fix-it-first" strategies for longoverdue infrastructure upgrades. Next, following voter approval of a sales tax increase in June, we committed more than half of the funding -about $17 million -- to street repair and paving (the rest of the dollars went to public safety and to rapid rehousing of the homeless). I've also joined Sen. Jim Beall in advocating for a bill that he introduced in the State Legislature to restore state investment in local roads and highways. These efforts would help improve that funding level, but there is an opportunity to substantially boost road funding even further via Measure B, the countywide traffic relief and road repair measure, which will appear on your November ballot. I strongly encourage you to become familiar with Measure B. Regardless of your position on this or any other measure, the most direct and impactful way of addressing many of our biggest local challenges -- including roads, traffic, housing, and restoring police staffing -- is to vote on Nov. 8. The Problem of Plastic in our Oceans

Vote Si en la Medida E Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EarthTalk We’re all familiar with the issue of nonbiodegradable plastic debris (shopping bags, soda bottles, fishing nets etc.) clogging up our waterways and making its way out to sea— sometimes accumulating in huge “gyres.” But what you might not realize is that even if you are responsible about recycling and not littering, you may still be contributing to the ocean's plastic burden by virtue of the clothes on your back. “The single biggest plastic pollution problem facing our ocean is microfiber: trillions of pieces of tiny fibers flowing into the ocean— every time we use our washing machines,” reports the nonprofit Rozalia Project. “Our synthetic clothing is breaking up, sending this plastic microfiber out with the drain water.” According to the group, just one fleece jacket could shed over 81,000 minute strands of polyester per wash. “New York City, alone, could have 6.8 billion microfibers flowing into its harbor every day.” According to activist Sarah Mosko, the tiny size of microplastics actually adds to their dangers. “Because plastics are lipophylic (oil-loving), oily contaminants in seawater are drawn to them,” she reports on Algalita’s blog. “Japanese researchers found that plastic pellets no more than a half millimeter in diameter could adsorb hazardous chemicals (like polychlorinated biphenyls, nonylphenols and derivatives of DDT) onto their surfaces at up to one million times the concentrations in the surrounding water.” The tiny size of microplastics means that even minute creatures can ingest them, thereby introducing any chemicals they carry into the very bottom of the food chain. The Rozalia Project adds that “ingested pollutants can un-stick from the plastic and end up in the stomachs and tissue” of everything from plankton to whales, causing issues at the cellular level as well as digestive problems. Rozalia researchers found that two-thirds of all fish species tested from
markets in California had microfiber or microplastic in them. Even those who don’t eat fish may not be able to avoid ingesting microfibers, given that farm animals are typically fed fish meal as a dietary staple. So what can be done? Rozalia has developed “the world’s first consumer solution” to stop microfiber pollution. The patent-pending microfiber catcher works in any washing machine, catching microfibers so they can’t flow out with the drain water. “Early test results show the microfiber catcher keeping 2,000-9,000 pieces of synthetic microfibers from flowing into our public waterways per wash per household.” Outdoor clothing and gear makers are starting to realize that they can be part of the solution as well. Earlier this year, Patagonia commissioned microbiologists from UC Santa Barbara to study the problem and suggest ways the company could reduce microfiber pollution moving forward. The company is sharing the findings with its competitors in order to collaborate on industry-wide solutions. We probably can’t do much, concludes Sarah Mosko, about the microplastics that are already contaminating our oceans, but we can start making smarter clothing choices, adding that “natural fiber cloths like cotton, silk, wool, bamboo, hemp and even soy may be better choices for those concerned about the environment. All derive from renewable sources, are intrinsically biodegradable, and their fibers would not attract oily chemicals out of seawater.” CONTACTS: Rozalia Project, www. rozaliaproject.org; Algalita, www.algalita. org; UC Santa Barbara study, www.esm. ucsb.edu/research/2016Group_Projects/ documents/PataPlastBrief.pdf. GET TO KNOW: MERWIN FOARD OF THE SOUND OF MUSIC Hey Merwin, thanks for the opportunity to speak to you! First off, what was the route of you becoming a Broadway performer? Unlike most people who are in this business, doing dance at a studio or high school musicals I did not have that opportunity growing up in Charlotte North Carolina just because the school I went to didn't offer that type of program. So I didn't discover performing until I was in college. When I graduated high school I thought I was gonna go into broadcasting via radio dj and play music and they said ‘well do you sing’, ‘well not really’, ‘well we’re gonna teach you’. Suddenly I discovered I had this singing voice that people responded to. Then I’m getting into musicals instead of studying broadcasting. It’s been my career for 35 years. What do you like best about your work? Is there a favorite aspect?

Arturo Hilario El Observador Recently we had the opportunity to speak to performer Merwin Foard who currently stars in the Broadway production of The Sound of Music which will be in San Jose from November 8-13 at Center for the Performing Arts. Foard breaks down what it’s like starting in theater, being part of the Disney family, and working on a musical about the real life Von Trapp Family, who right before World War II were one of the best-known musical groups.
I like best the fact that every time we do a live performance the group of people that are in that room watching that performance, that’s the only time that group of people will ever be together and that’s kind of exciting. We’re doing the same show, 8 performances a week, the exciting thing for me is when you think about all of those people that are having a night out with their family and they are enjoying what you are doing on the stage and that means so much to me. That would be what I consider my favorite part of what I get to do.
guy that has one really nice suit but doesn’t really have the shoes to go with it and he shows up at the cocktail party expecting to rub elbows with people that might move his career forward so it never quite happens. He is the instigator to get the children to sing in the contest more for his own self aggrandizing and gratification but also hopefully it ends up being the ticket out that the Von Trapp family needs to escape Austria. It’s a wonderful character to play, the lines area real funny, and I’ve had a great time working this character out with our director Jack O'Brien in terms of really fleshing out more in this production than most Maxes have in previous productions. What can audiences expect to see at The Sound of Music? We find by talking to people that are people are so moved by this production because we are at a very specific politically charged climate right now in our country and the idea of a foreign faction could actually invade and take over your country just because they want to is more real today than it was in the 60’s when the show was on Broadway, that impacts people a great deal. Also, it’s very cinematic there are no traditional blackouts so then they change the sets and the action is seamless, even between one scene to the next are very fluid. Any final thoughts?
Could you tell us a bit about your current role as Max Detweiler in The Sound of Music?
I just hope that people will come out and enjoy their time with us once we arrive. We cannot wait to get there.
Max Detweiler is an impresario, and one of Captain Von Trapp’s best friends, and he’s a little bit of an opportunist, he’s like that

Gloria La Riva is a Presidential Candidate set on creating a movement, not a moment Arturo Hilario El Observador The Freedom and Liberation Party is not one that you may have heard during the frenzy that has been the 2016 Presidential Election. You may have already voted, or made your choice on a nominee or choose not to take part, but to say that the choices have been a simple one can be bring a hefty discourse, with others, or even yourself. Presidential Nominee Gloria La Riva agrees. Representing three Socialist parties across the states she's on the ballot for, California for the Peace and Freedom Party, in Vermont for the Liberty Union Party, and in Colorado, New Mexico, Iowa, Louisiana, New Jersey, and Washington state for the Party for Socialism and Liberation, she believes in the government working for all inclusive society, not just those that have controlled or benefited from it thus far. A leading figure of Party for Socialism and Liberation, La Riva's nomination in August spurred her campaign staff and her supporters to spread awareness of the 'other candidate', more importantly, one whose ground-level style of reform was easier to digest than the headiness of the other candidates proposals. In basic terms La Riva's proposals boils down to more money and jobs for those that are struggling, less debt for students, and free healthcare for all. Activist and Candidate A long time labor, community and anti-war activist based in the Bay Area, La Riva is the only Latina (Mexican-American) running for president. La Riva adds that the stance her party shares is one that is held by many in the country. In her view there is no incentive or nominee that truly exemplifies the traits of the 'everyman', and that
is why voting rates are so low. “As a socialist we don’t hold any confidence in the Democrats or Republican parties. They are the parties of big business and the bankers, of the 1%.” The climate of the 2016 Presidential Election holds weight to back her words, as both frontrunners for the presidency Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have faced scrutiny by Americans on a daily basis. La Riva says “I’ve called it the most grotesque election in history of the United States.” Her emphasis on social duty and economic reform are radically different than those of either Democratic and Republican nominee. “The Peace and Freedom Party represent the working class, whether employed or unemployed we represent the people that don’t even have a right to vote, the undocumented, permanent residents of which they are many millions. People that are in prison, people out of prison. We represent the people who have great great needs at this time, and 2016 is a critical moment in our country.” The Motion of Movements La Riva and her crew understood from the getgo that this wasn't a push to get to White House, but a push to inform and educate, to show that in fact there are other options for political parties. She approaches this stance by highlighting the social rights movements that have sprung up in more frequency and scale since the 2011 Occupy Wall Street movement began in New York City's Zuccotti Park. “Since occupied broke out the last five years have seen the resurgence of many movements. Black Lives Matter, Fight for 15, the struggle of LGBTQ people for equal rights, the fight for women's reproductive rights, for healthcare and people's rights.” Another force in empowering people into uniting into movements was Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. La Riva says, “the Bernie Sanders campaign helped much in opening people’s ideas in accepting Socialism as an alternative. This year has been great for our campaign, great for the ideas of Socialism because ultimately we

believe that Capitalism provides no solution for people; the cause of people suffering, of poverty, of unemployment, of war, of racism. And one of our most important messages is that the only way that progress comes about in a capitalist society is when people organize, mobilize, and fight for their rights. That’s what history shows us.” Plans of a Socialist President La Riva has a 10-point plan whose architecture involve guaranteeing full employment, free education and free healthcare, all without raising the national debt. “Economically it’s completely attainable by using Pentagon money, which is our tax dollars, for people’s needs. Instead of bailing out the banks, bailing out student debt, to cancel and provide free education. Free health care will be attained by eliminating the insurance companies which are just parasitical institutes. In addition bringing all the troops home, who only served a purpose of oil and the military industrial complex. Also declaring an emergency in this country and put a ban on foreclosures. And to use all the wealth that’s created, that people create, but don’t own.” Another point that is she mentions is giving undocumented workers the voice and power for reform by immediate granting of citizenship. Her experience as a first generation Mexican-American and seeing her mother, who was a permanent resident, working to raise 6 children without voting rights certainly helped form these propositions.
Moving Forward In her campaigns visits to small towns in California, bigger areas like San Jose and Los Angeles, as well as indian reservations, the message has been effective. “Many people were very very happy to see our position, and we will fight for them even beyond the election. Our intent is to grow the organization, grow the party and be ready for the next stage, after November 8. That is to mobilize all the people to demand housing, jobs and free healthcare for all and free education. It’s an uphill battle, but more and more people believe in those ideas.” Although our next President lies with either a businessman from New York or the first female President in this country, La Riva hopes people consider the past. Not only to see how social movements changed the course of the United States over time, but that future movements can ultimately work to change the election process, even for the highest seat in the country. “It’s the history that’s hidden from the people, the history of how the 8-hour workday came about, how union’s came about, because people fought for their rights. Progress was made by the AfricanAmerican community organizing for decades. All of these things are what our election campaign is about. The people’s movement.” More information on Gloria La Riva and her work with the Party for Socialism and Liberation visit <glorialariva4president.com>.

MACBOOK PRO 2016: WTF?
What About All the Other Models? This is where WTF becomes a real question. If you’re not going for the very top of the line, you are spending a lot of money for a few relatively minor new features, last year’s processor and some exceptional inconveniences. The low-end, lower-priced 13″ models have only two USB-C ports and one 3.5mm headphone jack. You’ll use one for power, and that leaves you one port to handle all of your accessories. While the highest-priced 13″ with the Touch Bar does have four USB-C ports, it is only available with 1TB of SSD storage, which makes it almost identical to the 1TB all-singing, all-dancing 13″ MacBook Pro from 2014/2015 which has a Retina display, an HDMI port, two Thunderbolt 2 ports, an SD card reader, a MagSafe power port, two USB ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack. I cannot see a reason to upgrade from a topof-the-line 13″ 2014/2015 MacBook Pro to the 2016 model. The Touch Bar just won’t add enough capability or wow factor to justify the investment. Is There Anything to Like About the Upgraded MacBook Pros?
Shelly Palmer Apple announced the 2016 upgrade to its MacBook Pro laptops. They are really expensive. They feature last year’s Intel processors. They require adaptors (dongles) for every accessory you already own such as your Hard Drive, Jump Drive, HDMI, SD Card Reader, and Power cable (goodbye MagSafe), and, incredible as it might sound, they feature a 3.5mm headphone jack. So much for Apple’s “time to ditch the 100-yearold headphone jack” story from its iPhone 7 launch. (See: Apple iPhone 7: Are You F#$king Kidding Me? for details) All of which elicits my somewhat incredulous response, Apple MacBook Pro 2016: WTF? Should You Buy One? Before I get into what’s awesome and what’s puzzling about the new MacBook Pros, there is one model that is probably worth all of the WTF-ness, the purchasing of new dongles, the revision of workflows, the transition from Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3, and all the pain and expense that will come with it – the top-of-the-line MacBook Pro 15″ (available in Space Gray or Silver), which includes four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, the new Touch Bar, Force Touch trackpad, and Touch ID, configured as follows: • 2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz • 16GB 2133MHz memory • 2TB PCIe-based SSD • Radeon Pro 460 with 4GB memory This configuration (only available on apple. com) is listed at $4,299.00. If you want Apple Care (a warranty extension that makes sense
TECHNOLOGY
EL OBSERVADOR | www.el-observador.com
only if you read the fine print), it will cost you an additional $349.00. Now let’s add a few dongles so you can use your existing Thunderbolt 2 external drives, Video encoders, HDMI monitors and peripherals, and all the USB devices you have in your world. You’ll probably want to purchase the following: • Three (3) Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapters – Price: $49.00 each (For your existing Thunderbolt monitors, drives, audio/video interfaces, etc.) • One (1) USB-C to Lightning Cable (1 m) – Price: $25.00 (To connect your iPhone) • One (1) USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter – Price: $34.95 (To plug your computer into the Internet if you don’t have awesome WiFi available) • Three ( 3) U SB-C to USB Adapters – Price: $19.00 (To plug in printers, scanners, jump drives, hard drives, DVD/CD drives, etc.) • One (1) USB-C to VGA Adapter – Price: $24.95 (To be equipped to present in any lowtech meeting room in the world) • One (1) USB-C to HDMI Adapter – Price: $19.95 (To plug into an HD or 4K monitor or HDMI peripheral) • All in, including approximate sales tax (8.875% in NY), the total price is $5,390.57. Is it worth it? Is any laptop worth the better part of $5,400? Only if you want (or need) the greatest MacBook Pro ever built. It is crazy expensive, but with a 2TB PCIe-based SSD, 16GB memory and this graphics card … it will empower you in ways no MacBook Pro has empowered you before. It is simply awesome!
There is plenty to like about the new MacBooks (except the 13″ entry-level model, which at $1,499 is really not an upgrade; it’s just someone’s “crazy expensive” first MacBook Pro). The Touch Bar is a super-neat trick and will be very useful. The Touch ID will be more helpful for Apple Pay than it will be for consumers, but it has a bit of a hidden benefit. You can switch profiles by putting your finger on the Touch ID.
19
This is wonderful news if you are significantly inconvenienced by the current process (ShiftCommand-Q and enter your password). I also think people will find behavior-changing uses for the Force Touch trackpad, assuming it has near-perfect palm-rejection capabilities. You will always be resting your palms on the 46 percent bigger touchpad. They Are Works of ArT Yes, I am asking a very serious WTF about some of the choices Apple made in this “upgrade.” I was incensed by Apple’s choice to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack from the iPhone 7, and I’m doubly incensed by its decision to force the universe to immediately adopt the USB-C port as the “one and only true peripheral and power port.” But that said, these are the best MacBook Pros Apple has ever made. They look amazing! Actually, they are amazing! And though I am absolutely unapologetic for this rant, one thing is certain: when you experience the new MacBook Pro, touch one, or even just see one – you’re going to want one. They are works of art.
