Broad Coalition Begins Campaign to Replace Death Penalty with Life Without Parole
San Jose’s Independent Police Auditor LaDoris H. Cordell signed the SAFE Campaign.
READ US ONLINE
San José, CA A statewide coalition of law enforcement, murder victim family members and community groups announced the launch of signature gathering for the SAFE California Act (the Savings, Accountability and Full Enforcement for California Act), a ballot initiative that will replace the death penalty with life in prison without possibility of parole. The SAFE California Act will save California taxpayers millions of dollars, protect the innocent from execution, and direct a portion of the savings from the initiative to local law enforcement to solve more rapes and murders. Recent polls conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) and Field Poll show California voters’ strong
preference for life without the possibility of parole over the death penalty. In the Field Poll released on September 29, 48% of California voters opted for a sentence of life without the possibility of parole while only 40% chose the death penalty. The PPIC poll showed 54% of Californians prefer life without possibility of parole, with more than 67% of Latinos choosing this punishment over the death penalty. “California’s broken and battered death penalty system is causing us to veer dangerously off the path of justice,” said Retired Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge LaDoris H. Cordell. “The SAFE California Initiative will get us back on track.” A study by Federal Judge Arthur Alarcon and law professor Paula Mitchell released in June found that the state of California has spent 4 billion taxpayer dollars on the death penalty since 1978 and carried out thirteen executions in that time, a cost of $308 mil-
lion per execution. Judge Alarcon and Professor Mitchell concluded that replacing the death penalty with life without possibility of parole would save the state nearly $1 billion in five years. “The truth is that our death penalty is costly, dysfunctional and ineffective”, said Steven Fajardo, a retired lieutenant of police. “It is shocking that 46% of murders and 56% of reported rapes go unsolved in California. Something is wrong with that equation.” The SAFE Campaign needs over 500,000 signatures to qualify for the November 2012 ballot. This weekend hundreds of paid and unpaid signature gathers will begin asking Californians to support SAFE CA. More information about the campaign is available at www.safecalifornia.org, @safecalifornia or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SAFECalifornia. Text SAFECA to 74700 *Text PENAJUSTA a 74700

Read the Patient Information that comes with DIOVAN before you take it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or treatment. If you have any questions about DIOVAN, ask your doctor or pharmacist. What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN? Taking DIOVAN during pregnancy can cause injury and even death to your unborn baby. If you get pregnant, stop taking DIOVAN and call your doctor right away. Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your blood pressure if you plan to become pregnant. What is DIOVAN? DIOVAN is a prescription medicine called an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It is used in adults to: U lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, 6 to 16 years of age. U treat heart failure in adults. In these patients, DIOVAN may lower the need for hospitalization that happens from heart failure. U improve the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in adults. DIOVAN is not for children under 6 years of age or children with certain kidney problems. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Blood pressure is the force in your blood vessels when your heart beats and when your heart rests. You have high blood pressure when the force is too much. DIOVAN can help your blood vessels relax so your blood pressure is lower. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body and causes damage to the blood vessels. If high blood pressure is not treated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and vision problems. Heart Failure occurs when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to your lungs and the rest of your body. Just walking or moving can make you short of breath, so you may have to rest a lot. Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): A heart attack is caused by a blocked artery that results in damage to the heart muscle. What should I tell my doctor before taking DIOVAN? Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including whether you: U have any allergies. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in DIOVAN. U have a heart condition U have liver problems U have kidney problems U are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?â€? U are breast-feeding. It is not known if DIOVAN passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take DIOVAN or breast-feed, but not both. Talk with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you take DIOVAN. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take: U other medicines for high blood pressure or a heart problem U water pills (also called “diureticsâ€?) U potassium supplements U a salt substitute U Â˜ÂœÂ˜ĂƒĂŒiĂ€ÂœÂˆ`>Â?ĂŠ>Â˜ĂŒÂˆÂ‡ÂˆÂ˜vÂ?>““>ĂŒÂœĂ€ĂžĂŠ`ÀÕ}ĂƒĂŠÂÂ?ˆŽiĂŠÂˆLĂ•ÂŤĂ€ÂœviÂ˜ĂŠÂœĂ€ĂŠÂ˜>ÂŤĂ€ÂœĂ?i˜Ž Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines with you to show to your doctor and pharmacist when a new medicine is prescribed. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking any new medicine. Your doctor or pharmacist will know what medicines are safe to take together. How should I take DIOVAN? U Take DIOVAN exactly as prescribed by your doctor. U For treatment of high blood pressure, take DIOVAN one time each day, at the same time each day. U If your child cannot swallow tablets, or if tablets are not available in the prescribed strength, your pharmacist will mix DIOVAN as a liquid suspension for your child. If your child switches between taking the tablet and the suspension, your doctor will adjust the dose as needed. Shake the bottle of suspension well for at least 10 seconds before pouring the dose of medicine to give to your child. U For adult patients with heart failure or who have had a heart attack, take DIOVAN two times each day, at the same time each day. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of DIOVAN and may increase the dose during your treatment. U DIOVAN can be taken with or without food.
U If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time. U If you take too much DIOVAN, call your doctor or Poison Control Center, or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. What are the possible side effects of DIOVAN? DIOVAN may cause the following serious side effects: Injury or death to an unborn baby. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?â€? Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension). They are the American servicemen who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War. Officially known on record as the MIA (Missing in Action) and KIA (Killed in Action). The forces of the enemy took us at age 19; and now surviving veterans want to give back. It’s time to embrace our “Sons of San José and partner-up with our business community leaders; the giants whose shoulders we need to stand on in order to succeed. The memorial will be located at the hub of our metropolitan business district bringing all of San José’s diverse communities together. OPINION
By Janet Trautwein It’s hard to believe, but Medicare’s open enrollment season began recently. And this year, as a result of the federal health reform law, seniors will have to brace for several changes. Seniors who rely on privately administered Medicare Advantage plans for their benefits will face the biggest adjustments. That’s too bad, as Medicare Advantage has a strong track record of delivering health benefits that meet or even exceed those of conventional Medicare. Medicare Advantage (MA) offers enrollees a different way of receiving their Part A hospital and Part B physician care. Under the program, private insurers offer competing plans, and patients themselves choose which coverage option works best for their particular health and financial needs. More than 12 million seniors participate in Medicare Advantage, about one-fourth of all those eligible for Medicare. The pool of MA beneficiaries has more than doubled since 2005. But some policymakers
believe the MA program to be wasteful. They cite the fact that Medicare Advantage costs the government slightly more per enrollee than traditional Medicare. They believe seniors would be better served if everyone were enrolled in the traditional Medicare program, not recognizing that the little bit of extra money goes to pay for benefits and services seniors appreciate. By 2017, government number-crunchers expect benefits for the average MA enrollee to be slashed by 27 percent, or $3,700. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates these changes will cause some Medicare Advantage plans to exit the program and that as a result, enrollment will drop to 7.4 million by 2017. The Medicare program’s own actuaries actually predict an even steeper fall-off of 50 percent. Some speculate that those who dislike Medicare Advantage want to use these methods to marginalize Medicare Advantage to the point of non-existence. This is exactly what happened to Medicare + Choice in the late
Bring Service Jobs Back
1990s, when payments got so low that plans were forced to leave large areas of the country, especially in rural areas. MA beneficiaries are also much healthier than their counterparts in traditional Medicare. A 2004 study found that MA plans achieved better outcomes than traditional Medicare in five of seven core indicators, including breastcancer screenings, diabetes testing, and treatment after heart attacks. Advantage enrollees in California spend 30 percent fewer days in hospitals than those in traditional Medicare. In Nevada, they spend 23 percent fewer days. Less time in the hospital is good news not just for patients — but for federal coffers, too. Medicare Advantage represents just the kind of innovative health care model that could help drive down longterm health costs and improve health care in this country. Congress should make it easier to opt in, not out. And if seniors want to change plans, they should have a full range of choices available to them.

Hmorales@el-observador.com During a discussion about a trip, Cinthia Rodriguez, EO Staff, experienced the following: When going to a gas station in Oregon, an attendant pumped the gasoline, checked the oil and water, cleaned the front and back windows, and received payment for the gasoline purchased. Now that is service. In Oregon, you cannot pump your own gas. The outcome is that a service job opportunity has been created by local legislation and in the process created entry level jobs for unskilled local labor. In the business era before the 1960?S Korean Conflict many such ?shadow work? jobs existed. The New York Times Sunday edition dated 10.30.11, published ?Our Unpaid, Extra ?shadow work? authored by Craig Lambert, Deputy Editor, Harvard Magazine. Back in 1981, philosopher and author Ivan Illich, published an incisive social commentary entitled ?SHADOW WORK?. He defined ‘shadow work’ as all that unpaid labor, including housework and home-making performed by women, done in a wage-based economy. Lambert relates witnessing his friend, a $300,000 per year lawyer, bagging her groceries and checking herself out of a local supermarket. Here is another example of how businesses have designed systems of ?non-service? which require the client-consumer to do some unpaid work that was formerly the job of a local worker. Perhaps self-checkout stations permit saving time by not standing in line for a cash register attendant to tally up your purchases, bag them, and take payment. The point here is that by designing a self-check out station, cer-
tain unpaid work is now done by a client-customer. And this is happening in a service economy which is touted by many economists and businesses. Today many consumers experience many situations where there is a complete lack of service personnel available. For example, I went to a clothing store to purchase some new Tshirts. I found them by myself, examined several brands, made my choice, and then had to hunt for a checkout station which was attended. In the past, certain chain stores had sales staff who walked the aisles looking for opportunities to assist a customer. I have heard several of my friends comment about how this new mode of ?self-service? really causes them to go elsewhere to make their purchases. The consumer is doing a lot of ?unpaid shadow work? today which is put upon all of us when we go forth to spend our budgeted money. Recently, after enjoying a luncheon at a local restaurant, I noted a survey form which asked a series of questions about the quality of the food, the service, etc. It seems that more firms have taken to doing surveys to learn about their customers and perhaps improve the food service being provided. Many of these surveys are now on the sales receipt which instructs you to go online or on the phone to respond to the survey questions. Your reward for participation may be a free meal or dessert. And then there is the ?Ikea effect? under which a consumer purchases an item that requires assembly. Some consumers enjoy the unpaid work required to assemble the item purchased.
Nonetheless, this is another form of ?unpaid shadow work? which has pushed off assembly to the consumer. Why do I think that ?unpaid shadow work? is important enough to discuss and present to EO?s readers? It is because people need jobs today. It is because the unemployment rate amongst the youth of our community is too high. It is estimated at 25%. Many youths drop out of school to ?earn money? but end up unemployed because business has eliminated many opportunities where youth could gain some learning experiences while being trained and mentored by the business manager. Profit oriented business will not eliminate the ?unpaid shadow work? practices which exist today. I think that with the application of automation, robotics, use of debit cards, and many electronic devices, business will continue to push onto consumers any and every employee expense/costs that is feasible. Consumers need to become aware enough to push back by taking their business elsewhere to businesses which do employ ?service personnel? who are well trained, courteous, and know how to assist the customer. And businesses do have a responsibility to provide employment to the local work force. That enables an individual to earn the money to be a consumer. Let?s look at establishment of ?customer service? that is truly that especially during this c o m i n g Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year?s holiday season. Bring customer service jobs back.?

EDUCATION
Archbishop Mitty High School hosts the Romero Leadership Institute
Romero Leadership Institute participants. By Anthony Rojo Romero Leadership Institute Coordinator Archbishop Mitty High School hosted the 4th year of the Romero Leadership Institute, a one-week leadership program for Latino students. The Romero Leadership Institute was established to provide an opportunity for select Latino students to explore their own leadership potential, while also connecting with current and future leaders in the Latino community. Students from public and private elementary schools around Santa Clara County participated in a week of activities. The participants take
time to visit local colleges such as San Jose State University, University of San Francisco and Cal Berkeley. Exposing the students to college life is a crucial step in achieving one of the Romero Program’s goals of developing future Latino leaders. In addition to college life, the students traveled to the cultural murals in the San Francisco Mission District, and discussed the significance of the Aztec people, Archbishop Oscar Romero, the war in El Salvador, Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata and other murals that had rich historical significance for all of us. Students were also introduced to a panel of Archbishop Mitty Latino alumni
who not only spoke about their professions but how they were leaders in their chosen field and in the larger Latino community. This year we welcomed back Archbishop Mitty alumni Juvenal Chavez ’01, and Enrique Chavez ’05, whose family owns the very popular Mi Pueblo Food Centers. They emphasized the importance of giving back to others, a theme that played out in the week’s activities. For more information on the Romero Leadership Institute and how you can support, contact the Archbishop Mitty High School Genesis Outreach Program at: outreach@mitty.com or 342-4381.

A Salute to those Killed in Action (KIA) By Cinthia Rodriguez El Observador

The San Jose City College’s Veterans Program hosted their first Annual Veteran Celebration Day and Resource Fair in collaboration with the Associated Students and the American Indian Council for Higher Education to honor all Veterans. Currently there are over 300 veteran students attending San Jose City College. The students range from 18 year olds to 60 year olds. The school wants to let students know that they are entitled to services just for them. One of the groups present was the Killed in Action (KIA) Warriors, a group of veterans that recognize the Native Americans who paid the ultimate price for American freedom at home and abroad. “We go out throughout the San Francisco Bay area, Northern California and the Central Valley to have our Native Americans and veterans sign both flags along with congressmen. city officials, any veteran who has served in the armed forces (can) sign the flags, said Richard Windfeathers, Vietnam veteran. The two KIA flags that get signed are the original and the Native American Memorial flag, designed for the soldiers who came from reservations and were killed in action or died of wounds. They are then delivered to their corresponding families.
Killed in Action Warriors were at San Jose City College promoting their cause. The KIA Warriors started delivering the flags seven years ago. As soon as they are made aware of a loss in a family they present the flags. Sometimes it’s done through ceremony, while other families prefer something private in their home. Over 80 flags have been delivered this year so far. “They need something to find some solace and some peace. It’s so hard to go through military service, said Windfeathers. The Warriors believe they help families get through the death of their loved ones. They also recognize veterans who come back injured or aren’t psychologically prepared to transition to the civilian life.
“We are veterans taking care of our veterans. We’re not waiting for the government to do it, we are doing it, said Windfeathers. Any veteran can receive the flags regardless of ethnicity or gender. Through their work, the Warriors would like the nation to recognize the KIA flag during Veteran Memorial Day ceremonies. They would like to see it next for the Prison of War (POW) and Missing in Action (MIA) flags. Goodwill was also present as well to representatives from Yellow Ribbon schools, private colleges and universities that have signed special agreements with the Veterans Administration. These junior colleges will soon debut a new veterans resource website and club.

By Cinthia Rodriguez El Observador The Third Annual County of Santa Clara Salute to Military Women recognized the sacrifice and contributions of women who are currently enlisted, or have previously served in the American Armed Forces. The evening was dedicated to four women veterans. Susan Feland, Joanne Martinez from the Air Force and Rea Chichocki along with Dianna Marroquin from the Army. They all discussed the challenges they faced as well as their views on what the future holds. Chichocki loved working for the Army, where she started out as the only helicopter crew woman. She recently retired and is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She takes her pills; takes it one day at a time. She believes that would make it easier for women like her to open up and really ex-
plore her problems. Feland was a military brat and served in the Air Force for four years. She saw the impact the branch made around the world. She believes they provide help and have positive influences on people’s lives. Marroquin is also a military brat. She admired her dad and knew she wanted to follow in his footsteps. She talked about how people didn’t take women seriously, however that is slowly changing. Being a veteran in something she takes tremendous pride in. Martinez mentioned that she couldn’t explain the pride and patriotism that was instilled in her while on duty. The veteran women honored want respect for all women veterans and would like to be recognized as the veterans they really are. They also want to be recognized for their talent, skills, contributions and service.

Experts Help Local Families Senior Safety Proof Their Homes (October 2011) –
www.el-observador.com | NOV 4-NOV 10 2011 |
One out of three adults age 65 and older falls each year and nearly a third of them will live with discomfort from the fall for the rest of their lives. That’s why Senior Helpers, a leading inhome care provider serving our area, has highly trained caregivers who can help spot danger zones in seniors’ homes and help families make their homes safer. “Up to 30 percent of those who fall suffer injuries such as hip fractures or head traumas, says Peter Ross, CEO and co-founder of Senior Helpers. “Those types of injuries not only make it hard for seniors to live independently, but those injuries can sometimes be fatal. Our caregivers are there to provide families with the comfort that someone is watching over their senior loved one and helping make sure they’re living in a safe environment. Senior Helpers’ Caregivers Help Fall-Proof Home By: Safety Proofing the Home: • Remove boxes, newspapers and electrical cords from halls • Move coffee tables, magazine racks and plants stands from high-traffic areas • Help repair loose, wooden floor boards and carpeting right away • Store clothing, dishes ,
12
food ,medication and all necessities within reach Adding Safety Devices: • Hand rails for both sides of the bed • Non-slip treads for wooden steps • Raised toilet seat or one with arm rests • Grab bars for shower or tub • Sturdy plastic seat for shower or tub plus hand-held shower nozzle Checking Seniors’ Shoes: • Get rid of high heels, floppy slippers, shoes with slick soles • Have foot size measured each time seniors buy shoes foot size changes and shoes that are too big can make you fall • Avoid extra-thick soles Lighting-Up Living Space: • Place night lights in bedroom, bathroom and hallways • Place lamp near side of bed • Consider switching traditional light switches for glow in the dark switches Exercising Regularly – help seniors with activities that increase leg strength and improve balance in seniors, such as Tai Chi. Taking Seniors For Eye Check-ups – make sure seniors have their eyes checked by a doctor at least once a year and have their eyeglasses updated as needed. A good tip: consider getting a pair with single vision distance lenses for activities such as walking outside. Review Medications – have a doctor or pharmacist
review medications/prescriptions to let them know what may cause side effects, such as dizziness or drowsiness. When seniors fall, they usually develop a fear of falling, even if they’re not injured, says Ross. “That fear can easily turn into a senior choosing to limit their physical activity which in turn increases their risk of falling again. That’s where our caregivers come in; they help to prevent falls and help seniors cope with fall-related fears they may already have. Did You Know? • In 2008, 82% of fall deaths were among people 65 and older. • In 2008, more than 19,700 older adults died from unintentional fall injuries. • Fall-related fractures occur more than twice the rate for older women than for older men. • More than 90% of hip fractures are caused by falls. And white women have significantly higher hip fracture rates than black women. • Direct medical costs of falls equaled $28.2 billion last year alone. This story affects all seniors and their families in your area. Help us spread the word about Fall Prevention Awareness with our tips to keep seniors safe. We are happy to have our local senior care experts show you how to safety proof your home to protect seniors from falling. We can set-up interviews with local senior experts and families.
