In solidarity with the Occupy Movement, members of the community group Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) and concerned residents occupied a Wells Fargo Bank branch and demanded that Rhina Alfaro receive a loan modification. ACCE members and their allies have taken action to win a loan modification for their members Gloria Takla and Rhina Alfaro. Unfortunately Chase and Wells refuse to give Takla and Alfaro loan modifications. “I am a Wells Fargo borrower and I am facing eviction as a result of the foreclosure of my home,” said Rhina Alfaro, member of ACCE's Home Defenders League.

Rhina Alfaro, 50, is a Wells Fargo borrower facing foreclosure. Alfaro is 50 years old and originally from El Salvador. She had been making payments on her mortgage until one of her payments was returned. The bank refused to take her payment. She explained that the bank thought she was spending more than she was earning. It’s been a year since that happened. She is a victim of two scam artists that promised her home back but instead they just took her money.

The bank advised her to stop making payments. She took on a different loan and has paid the interests on that loan. She demands a permanent affordable loan modification.

“I don’t deserve to lose my home. I work hard, I have income and I’m willing to make payments to the bank if they are affordable,” said Alfaro. “I'm joining with members of ACCE to fight back, save my home from foreclosure and demand that the Banks change the way they operate." Local Group Works to Reduce Crime in Eastside San Jose with Distribution of a Common-Sense Moral Code San Jose, CA

It may seem ambitious to try to fight crime with a booklet, but that is precisely what a group of South Bay residents is doing: distributing thousands of copies of a booklet called “The Way to Happiness” in Eastside San Jose. “The Way to Happiness” contains values found in nearly all cultures, ethnic groups and religions: honor and help your parents, be trustworthy, do not steal, treat people the way you want to be treated, and seventeen more. The distribution was started on July 23 by Elaine Manley, the volunteer coordinator for the San Jose Area. Volunteers started passing out booklets in the neighborhoods east of King and Story, and have spread out from there. To date, more than 7,000 copies have been distributed. Ms. Manley says, “The Way to Happiness” has helped to reduce crime in

La semana pasada me di cuenta de que tengo un montón de cosas de que estar agradecida. Todo empezó con una platica que tuve con mi mamá. Mi mama vive en Fresno, una ciudad muy pequeña en la que trabajas en los campos o en empacadoras. Yo vivo en San José, donde la tecnología te rodea, pero soy feliz siendo una periodista que trabaja para esta publicación que lees. Esto va a sonar muy cursi, pero estoy dispuesto a arriesgar mi reputación de hardcore y admitir que estoy muy agradecida de tener la madre que tengo. Ella es mi héroe. Pero ahora a volver a lo que me hizo darme cuenta que tenía mucho de que es-

tar agradecida. Mi madre me llamó y hablamos por teléfono dos o tres veces a la semana así que cuando me llamo no pensé mucho en él porque. Mi madre es una señora muy franca así que no tardó en pedirme algo de dinero para su coche. Por supuesto le dije que le daría el dinero en cuanto me pagaran. No me gustaría que perdiera su coche. Después de colgar me di cuenta de que soy muy afortunada de tener un trabajo y que trabajo con personas que creen en mí y me empujan a hacer lo mejor posible. Estoy muy consciente de que Acción de Gracias es una fiesta extraña, pero me gusta pensar en ella como una oportunidad para contar mis bendiciones. Así que si usted tiene un trabajo y lo disfruta un poco o

mucho espero que este agradecido por eso. También entiendo que hay una gran cantidad de personas que ocupan las ciudades debido a la falta de puestos de trabajo. This 2011 Thanksgiving Day let us all be very thankful that, in America, it is still possible to disagree while assembling peaceably without being fearful of retribution. One of the successes of the Occupy Wall Street (OSW) movement is that the income and tax rate disparities are now being discussed along with other policy issues. However, nothing will change unless certain powerful and influential entities become very uncomfortable. The leaders of the OSW movement have too many issues which require changes in public policy and corporate business practices. Today there are too many very wealthy influential persons and multinational corporations which reap profits where they did not sow nor toil simply because elected officials can be influenced with large amounts of money by lobbyists. What is needed most is the return of business practices which are honest, have full integrity, and are moral in every respect. Mohatma Ghandi stated, “In any community and its economy, capitalism without morality is sinful.” What the very wealthy and influential need to realize is that a return to those balanced practices of the post World War II era would essentially re-establish the American consumer economy which is still the most powerful economic engine on earth. It was the freedoms enjoyed by residents of America to assemble peaceably as long as the standards of morality, integrity and honesty, essentially law and order, were practiced in a manner that created ‘a greater

good’ enjoyed by the many. Today, the 99% are finally objecting to the erosion of job opportunity for the middle class skilled laborer. A current economic study at Stanford University reveals that in 1975, 65% had middle class income levels which permitted discretionary spending and 17% were the working poor. Today, only 45% have middle class incomes and the working poor level is 35%. While the middle class income remained static, the income of the very wealthy increased 270%. This has been the result of public policy establishing corporate welfare which is complex (tax credits, subsidies, and accelerated depreciation) along with lower or avoided taxes. It is simply immoral for very profitable corporations to pay no taxes simply because of existing tax loopholes while using the nation’s infrastructure paid for by others. It is not right for the Congressional Bipartisan Super Committee to not agree to propose an increased tax rate for those whose earnings exceed one million dollars. It was not forthright and honest public policy for the former Bush Administration to enter into two wars that were funded by money borrowed from China. The burden of those wars fell upon a small professional volunteer military force and the middle class. The outcome is that Americans were not engaged in a ‘we are at war’ consciousness. Today the cost of those public policies has produced a situation wherein the American middle class has had enough. These are the 99.9% who are now voiceing their extreme disappointment. The former economy was fair to all though

it had its defects. The American Dream was possible. What is required today is to ponder Albert Einstein’s statement, “You cannot solve a problem from the mindset that created it.” Continued investment in several major economic areas is required, never mind the national deficit. Education and training must be funded while being transformed by the prudent application of information technology which permits an individual to proceed at a self-determined personal pace. Also required is support of the nation’s infrastructure along with the provision of the essentials of living: Access to housing, food, medical care, and social services even if socialistic programs are implemented. The OSW movement must demand that government monitor all business activity with no exception in order to be able to reveal where ‘sinful immoral capitalism’ is being practiced. It is time for the universal practice of honesty, integrity and morality in all transactions. Capitalism has succeeded in creating and amassing wealth, however it is now time to figure out how to distribute that wealth to the many so our form of democracy can survive to fulfill its future destiny. Let’s get back to the basics of conducting business with full honesty, integrity and morality. The OSW movement is being transformed into the 99% MOVEMENT because people have had it ! Let’s be thankful that happened in a peaceful manner.

Black Friday: Invest in the Community by Shopping Small This Weekend Sacramento, CA, — John Kabateck, executive director of the National Federation of Independent Business, California’s leading small-business association, is encouraging holiday shoppers to invest in their communities by shopping at small businesses the Saturday and Sunday after Thanksgiving. “Black Friday is when a lot of people get up early and line up outside the giant department stores, but if you’re looking for something unique and want to support your community, then you need to shop at small businesses, too,”

Tragically, unsafe sleeping practices have been responsible for the deaths of 41 infants in Santa Clara County within the last six years. To date, in 2011, 3 confirmed infant deaths have been caused by unsafe sleeping practices. In an effort to prevent any more of these tragic deaths, parents and caregivers are being cautioned to be aware of unsafe sleeping practices. It is extremely unsafe to put an infant to sleep on an adult bed, couch, sofa bed, or other soft surface, such as a pillow. Infants can die when they become trapped between cushions, or have their

faces pressed into soft bedding or pillows, ultimately suffocating. Bed sharing with an infant is also an extremely dangerous practice. When adults, older children or large pets share a bed or other sleeping surface with a baby, they can easily roll over on top of or up against the baby without even being aware of it during deep sleep, thus causing the baby to suffocate. Infants under one year of age should be put to sleep on their backs, alone, and in their cribs or bassinets. Babies should never sleep with adults, older children or large pets, and their cribs or bassinets should not contain

any toys, stuffed animals, or soft bedding. Babies should never sleep on adult beds, chairs, sofas, waterbeds, cushions, or nursing pillows. In Santa Clara County, the average age of the babies who died since 2005 due to unsafe sleep was three months old, and almost all of them died before they turned seven months old. Most were born full term and were healthy babies. To determine that unsafe sleeping is what caused the deaths of infants in these cases, the Medical Examiner in Santa Clara County has conducted thorough scene and medical investigations that include baby-doll reenactments.

Read the Patient Information that comes with DIOVAN before you take it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or treatment. If you have any questions about DIOVAN, ask your doctor or pharmacist. What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN? Taking DIOVAN during pregnancy can cause injury and even death to your unborn baby. If you get pregnant, stop taking DIOVAN and call your doctor right away. Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your blood pressure if you plan to become pregnant. What is DIOVAN? DIOVAN is a prescription medicine called an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It is used in adults to: • lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, 6 to 16 years of age. • treat heart failure in adults. In these patients, DIOVAN may lower the need for hospitalization that happens from heart failure. • improve the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in adults. DIOVAN is not for children under 6 years of age or children with certain kidney problems. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Blood pressure is the force in your blood vessels when your heart beats and when your heart rests. You have high blood pressure when the force is too much. DIOVAN can help your blood vessels relax so your blood pressure is lower. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body and causes damage to the blood vessels. If high blood pressure is not treated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and vision problems. Heart Failure occurs when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to your lungs and the rest of your body. Just walking or moving can make you short of breath, so you may have to rest a lot. Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): A heart attack is caused by a blocked artery that results in damage to the heart muscle. What should I tell my doctor before taking DIOVAN? Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including whether you: • have any allergies. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in DIOVAN. • have a heart condition • have liver problems • have kidney problems • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?” • are breast-feeding. It is not known if DIOVAN passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take DIOVAN or breast-feed, but not both. Talk with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you take DIOVAN. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take: • other medicines for high blood pressure or a heart problem • water pills (also called “diuretics”) • potassium supplements • a salt substitute • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines with you to show to your doctor and pharmacist when a new medicine is prescribed. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking any new medicine. Your doctor or pharmacist will know what medicines are safe to take together. How should I take DIOVAN? • Take DIOVAN exactly as prescribed by your doctor. • For treatment of high blood pressure, take DIOVAN one time each day, at the same time each day. • If your child cannot swallow tablets, or if tablets are not available in the prescribed strength, your pharmacist will mix DIOVAN as a liquid suspension for your child. If your child switches between taking the tablet and the suspension, your doctor will adjust the dose as needed. Shake the bottle of suspension well for at least 10 seconds before pouring the dose of medicine to give to your child. • For adult patients with heart failure or who have had a heart attack, take DIOVAN two times each day, at the same time each day. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of DIOVAN and may increase the dose during your treatment. • DIOVAN can be taken with or without food.

• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time. • If you take too much DIOVAN, call your doctor or Poison Control Center, or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. What are the possible side effects of DIOVAN? DIOVAN may cause the following serious side effects: Injury or death to an unborn baby. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?” Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension). Low blood pressure is most likely to happen if you also take water pills, are on a low-salt diet, get dialysis treatments, have heart problems, or get sick with vomiting or diarrhea. Lie down, if you feel faint or dizzy. Call your doctor right away. Kidney problems. Kidney problems may get worse in people that already have kidney disease. Some people will have changes on blood tests for kidney function and may need a lower dose of DIOVAN. Call your doctor if you get swelling in your feet, ankles, or hands, or unexplained weight gain. If you have heart failure, your doctor should check your kidney function before prescribing DIOVAN. The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with high blood pressure include: • headache • flu symptoms • stomach (abdominal pain) • dizziness • tiredness Side effects were generally mild and brief. They generally have not caused patients to stop taking DIOVAN. The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with heart failure include: • dizziness • joint and back pain • low blood pressure • tiredness • diarrhea • high blood potassium Common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people after a heart attack which caused them to stop taking the drug include: • low blood pressure • cough • high blood creatinine (decreased kidney function) • rash Tell your doctor if you get any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of DIOVAN. For a complete list, ask your doctor or pharmacist. How do I store DIOVAN? • Store DIOVAN tablets at room temperature between 59° to 86°F (15°C-30°C). • Keep DIOVAN tablets in a closed container in a dry place. • Store bottles of DIOVAN suspension at room temperature less than 86°F (30°C) for up to 30 days, or refrigerate between 35°F-46°F (2°C-8°C) for up to 75 days. • Keep DIOVAN and all medicines out of the reach of children. Imagine having spent several hours on cooking a special dinner for your loved ones and they cannot even enjoy it. That’s what happened to one of the residents at Western Trailer Park. Eva Torres lives in trailer 48A in the controversial Western Trailer Park, where other residents have encountered problems of their own. The humble mother of one was very excited to be hosting her family for Christmas, but that never happened. Almost a year ago, Torres trailer was flooded on Christmas Eve. There was a strong smell that filled the air, so strong that it gave Torres a headache. She couldn’t take it any longer. She checked her room when she realized it was flooding with sewage. She immediately ran out to the manager’s office and dialed all the numbers listed on the window of the office. Nobody answered and she ran back home where she yelled for help. She called her family and called off the dinner. “I thought the odor was coming from outside and when I realized that my home was flooding I was alone,” said Eva Torres. “It ruined my holiday and this

year I’m worried that it might happen to another family.” The pipe that was causing the bedroom to flood was separated in two. The neighbors heard Torres asking for help and they suggested they cut the pipe because there was nothing else to do. That stopped the flood but the sewage occupied the back of her home. Torres has a separate plumbing system from the rest of the residents of the park. She cannot afford to move out so she is asking for better treatment. Over 70 other homes are asking for a safer, healthier, and happier trailer park. Western Trailer Park residents do not want to suffer another rainy season like the last one. They are fighting for a healthy holiday season as well. To some residents, the rainy season means raw sewage, nausea, and unanswered calls for services needed. The trailer residents have organized a committee to better address and resolve their problems. Last October they learned of common concerns like problems with the treatment from property management and the lack of a safe place for their children to play, among other concerns. Early this

year, the owner of the park met with the committee and made some changes. The residents claim that some gravel was distributed to a few residents, a complaint report form was instituted, a few lights were added to the park, office hours were posted, and a new company to read utility meters was engaged. They also claim that management hasn’t kept their word on building a playground area for children; the manager’s performance has not been evaluated; and a workable emergency response system has not been established. Another resident witnessed the manager hit her son while driving. No major physical harm was done, but that can’t be said for his mental health. The boy has developed a fear about playing outside. In response to her complaint, the management team put up a sign that reads “drive slowly, we love our children.” Other signs were also posted, warning children not to play in open spaces. The residents at Western Trailer Park have no common space to meet, but they have common concerns. They believe in being treated fairly with respect and having a place to call a safe and healthy home.

Growing Up Poor In Silicon Valley

A forum was conducted by New America Media (Sandy Close, Exec. Dir.) and Silicon Valley De-Bug (Raj Jayadev, Director) this past November 3rd at the Martin Luther King Library. A major sponsor was Lucile Packard Foundation for Childre’s Health, which funded the comprehensive statistical studies presented by Andy Krackov, Assistant to the President, Programs & Partnerships, Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health, kidsdatat.org. About 125 interested individuals attended. Krackov presented information and graphics which supporte finding that one in four children in California lived in poverty these ‘Great Recession’ days. U.S. Census data indicates that in California more than six million people, two million of them children, lived in poverty last year. One of three African American kids and one in four Hispanic kids live in poverty compared to one in ten White kids. This data may be viewed at Kidsdata, a website that tracks the health and well being of children in California. The information raises awareness of several children’s issues. The grim statistical information reveal that nearly

half of all kids in California qualify for free or reduced school lunches. In certain communities of the Silicon Falley as much as 2 of three kids qualify for free lunches (Franklin McKinley Schools). “Foverty can affect children in many ways, impacting their weight, academic performace, and health.” Said Krackov. Sandy Close observed Y, “When perople are invisible and do not have a platform, their stories need to be told.” The statistical data already presented was transformed by the Youth Media Presentations which followed. Seven videos were displayed. Their titles included “Fighting Obesity With No Money”, “When a Parent is Sentenced”, “Trying to Make in in SJ Streets” (a profile of a dropin center), “Poverty as the Perpetuator” (economy and domestic violence), “When Community Achchors are Removed”, “Someone Got Shot Today”, and “A Letter to Young Kollmar”. All these were based in San Jose and prepared by the Youth Media. “A lot of people do not know what young people out there are going through,” said Sean Shavers. Other videographers included Valerie Klinker, Josue Rojas, Jean Melasaine, Justin Li, Ann Bassatte, Nancy

One was to schedule presentations to the San Jose City Council and Mayor to encourage these decision makers to allocate the maximum funding possible to community centers and after school dropin centers. Inform all decision makers who authorize programs and allocate supporitive funding. These include the Board of Supervisors, the local State Assembly representatives, and local members of the U.S. Congress, both Senators and Representatives. When videographic presentations are used to present the human condition being measured, the combination makes a profound impression which really gets beyond objecitve logic while enhancing compassionate awareness. Llena de “Felicidad y perpetua” lleg ó al país la cantante Fanny Lu para presentar su nuevo material discográfico, por lo que declaró estar contenta de encontrarse aquí, ya que México siempre le ha regalado su corazón. El disco hace referencia a mujeres fuertes, pues explicó, “entre más tomes las riendas de tu vida, más te aproximas a esa felicidad, yo invito a través de mis canciones a la mujer fuerte y valiente”. La artista colombiana aseguró que a pesar de tener mucho trabajo, siempre prepara cada uno de sus discos, “cada álbum es la bienvenida a una nueva historia y yo siempre me preparo para cada una de ellas, no importa qué tanto trabajo tenga, siempre para mí es una ilusión viajar a diferentes países”. Asimismo, explicó que se divirtió durante el proceso de elaboración, ya que fue una constante búsqueda de

superación y crecimiento. “Para mí cada disco es esa oportunidad de reinventarte, de arriesgarte y proponer”. En este nuevo material la cantante contó con la colaboración de reconocidos exponentes de reggaetón, género que dijo le agradó. “Soy una artista pop, pero me gusta mucho fusionar, el reggaetón me imprime mucha energía y fusionado a mi

sonido me parece que suena muy bien y me gustó incorporarlo con Chino & Nacho”. Zlatko Petricevic, accionista mayoritario del cuadro de Gallos Blancos, explicó que todo está listo para que el estadio La Corregidora sea sede de este encuentro en junio próximo. “¡Es oficial, Real Madrid!
