THANKSGIVING PRECEEDS BLACK FRIDAY AND CYBER MONDAY 2017

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR On Thursday, Thanksgiving Day (Día de Gracias), take time to appreciate the many blessings in your life. In this mercenary and predatory competitive Silicon Valley community, many are totally involved, engaged and committed to 'making as much money as possible. As an outcome, many individuals burn out chasing that monetary idol; from the effort to get ahead; to be perceived as successfully wealthy. I have observed this secular society develop since 1960. One observation: Back then my parish had over 600 parishioners who made (and paid) annual pledges. Today, that number is less than 100 even though newly married couples and their kids are beginning to attend again. A lot goes on in a parish... the most important being the continuing education regarding the Decalogue (Ten Commandments). Many individuals never realize that the first four commandments deal with one's personal relationship with GOD (if you are not an infidel, i.e. a non-believer). The fifth through the tenth commandments have to do with one's relationship to other humans, beginning with your parents. Have you honored your father and mother lately?

The next five commandments deal with not committing adultery (almost laughable today since affairs are well publicized). Then the dictums: DO NOT STEAL; DO NO MURDER; DO NOT BE A FALSE WITNESS; AND DO NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR'S PROPERTY. If all of us followed these simple basic rules, a civil order would exist. All issues between you and someone else make up human relationship. Though America began as a Protestant Christian nation, we now have those who believe and practice other faiths: Muslim, Buddhists, Shintoists, etc. A comparative religion would help you understand all have some form of these relationship standards with GOD and with other individuals. Many of us take this universe including this earthly planet for granted. Science and technology, developed recently, establish that our global climate is warming. However there are individuals in leadership positions who are in total denial. I personally have witnessed several glacial retreats at Glacier National Park (an inadvertent observation using photos taken from the same place several years apart) ... that glaciers definitely are melting. I accept the premise that the ocean levels are rising. If I accept reports made by astronomers who observed the universe is still expanding, I wonder if this expanding universe is evidence that GOD is still at work? One's personal faith influences the answer.

While many will enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal at home or with friends, the bounty of agricultural harvests is evident. Still there are the hungry and homeless. The challenge being faced today is that there is much inequity in the distribution of wealth. Something is very wrong when 1% (the very wealthy) own 45% of everything, much of which they had nothing to do with its creation. These investment owners just want profits from the Gold, silver, copper, tin, iron, mercury, lead, lithium, rare earth ores, natural gas and crude oil... all taken from earthly deposits. Can you imagine Silicon Valley without silicon (sand)? Or its electronics without electrons? And water fit to drink is in short supply (despite recent experience with the droughts). So many of us are 'persons of great faith' without realizing that we take for granted that reliable behavior of electrons whose features are used by our electronic devices. Consider that those electrons are present throughout this universe. Electrons exist everywhere in this universe. So, let's give thanks to GOD this Thanksgiving Day 2017, and then plan our efforts to be the first to take advantage of sales of electronic devices, clothing, and other items which will be gifts for members of the family, friends and associates. Marketing professionals have been creative in distracting us from being appreciative of the wonders which exist all around us - wonders that we humans

did not create. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are marketing events designed to make it easier to be a conspicuous consumer who buys goods and services. Some of us think we 'save money' by purchasing an item on sale; we have forgotten we paid for those items and the purveyor still made profits. On November 23, 2017 take time to acknowledge that you have achieved whatever you feel you accomplished with the assistance and support of many others around you who really care about you. And do 'Thank GOD’ for the bounty enjoyed by many. I recommend that we all pay more attention to those who use their elected authority, power and influence to legally steal this wealth from all of ‘us grunts’ who labored to create that wealth. We need to become very committed to the effort which creates and supports the governmental agencies which use tax revenues to assist the disabled, unemployed, homeless, and impoverished. There are enough resources on this earth; the sun reliably provides more solar energy than all humanity will ever use. If we address the equitable challenges faced today, all may be resolved by building the infrastructures needed to fairly distribute what individuals and families need in a very sustainable manner. What becomes an obstacle is the practice of ownership when a better approach is that of practicing good Samaritan stewardship in a very reliable and sustainable manner.

The greed and avarice which are today's obstacles lead to conflict and war. Those who are willing to practice good Samaritan stewardship will enjoy a good life and be blessed by those who receive assistance. This 2017 Thanksgiving Day, think about the changes you need to support in a sustainable manner to achieve peace on earth; to avoid man-made fire and fury which is destructive; and to be very thankful for the freedoms enjoyed in this Democratic nation which must be sustainably supported by ‘We, The People’ who do the work; who have the insights; and who are willing to share the bounty of this nation and this earthly home. We, who are stewards know that we cannot enjoy all the resources that Divine Providence made and provided access thereto. It will take disciplined focus and effort to achieve the peace and satisfaction possible. The secular mercenary approach of conspicuous consumption practiced on Black Friday and Cyber Monday distract us from the achievement of fairly distributing the essential resources needed by all of us in a fair and equitable system which is sustainable using those resources which we did not create. Let's take care of our needy; let's repulse the greedy. Let's vow to enjoy what Divine Providence provides consistently and reliably. Even in these challenging times GOD has blessed America.

ENCOURAGE A LOVE OF READING DURING NATIONAL FAMILY LITERACY MONTH

NOVEMBER 24 - 30, 2017

SCCOE HELPS PAVE THE WAY FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE CONTENT STANDARDS

Here are a few suggestions to help kids to fall in love w ith reading, and to share fun, memorable reading experiences together as a family. * Read A loud -- The easiest way to get kids interested in reading and to build their vocabular y is for parents to read aloud to their children, no matter their ages. K ids w ill of ten skip over words they don't recognize when reading alone, but if they hear their parents say the word, they may ask for the def inition. Putting aside just 15 minutes a week to read aloud to kids can make a dif ference.

For many parents, it's a struggle to get kids to read outside of the classroom, but November is the perfect time to change that, because it's National Family Literacy Month. The impor tance of reading goes well beyond acing a test or getting an "A" on a book repor t. It's a lifelong skill that helps you to better understand the world around you and even yourself. And it's becoming increasingly impor tant to ensure that kids don't become nonreaders in their busy, over-connected daily lives. "Reading opens up so many possibilities, from discovering a new interest to sparking untapped creativ ity. Best of all, it is a great way to spend time together as a family," says Emily Lev itt, v ice president of Education for Sylvan Learning.

* Start a Book Club -- Starting a book club w ith a group of your kid 's friends and their parents is a great way to make reading fun. Give participants a month to read the selected book, then organize a party where ever yone can chat and enjoy themed snacks. * Stick w ith What They Like -- K ids w ill be more inclined to read if it's about something they're already interested in. And if you can share that interest w ith them, that's even better! And because not ever yone loves the same subjects or genres, tr y to at least hook them w ith engaging books on whatever they enjoy -- be it baseball, magic or any thing else. * Monkey See, Monkey Do -- It's important that kids see their parents reading. If they don't, it's an unspoken statement to your child that it's okay not to read. From crossword puzzles to comic books, it's easier than you think to build literacy as a family. Make a conscious ef fort to set time aside time for you and your kids to read together. Not ever y child is a natural born reader and even kids who are great readers can use reading help.

SAN JOSE, CA – December 4-10, the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) will join several Santa Clara County school districts in hosting an hour of code. This week-long event pairs community partners with school sites to bring coding into the classroom. Schools throughout the county are partnering with software and technology companies including Google, Tableau, and Apple to host coding events for their students and families. Bringing the hour of code to Santa Clara County is part of a larger initiative. “In Santa Clara County, we are fortunate to be at the epicenter of technological innovation, there are many potential opportunities for our students,” says Casey Agena, SCCOE Instructional Technology Coordinator. Agena is part of a large advisory committee, appointed by the State Board of Education

to develop computer science standards for the State of California. California is one of 11 states that have passed legislation to create K-12 curriculum standards for Computer Science Education by July 31, 2019. Committee members from across the state are crafting guidelines which prioritize equity and access for all populations, including rural and lowincome populations. “This is an exciting time; we are pilot testing systemic implementation with our districts, administrators, stakeholders, and community leaders to see what compulsory computer science education may look like across the K-12 spectrum, says Agena. “We are collaborating and sharing our best practices. When the 2020 school year begins, computer science standards will be in place across the state, we want all California schools to be ready.”

• Evite criticar, corregir o discutir.

GIVING TUESDAY: SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER AND GIVE WISELY the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.” In 2015, 1.64 million online gifts raised 177 million dollars. Holiday donations can make a big impact, and it’s easier than you think to get involved. However, it’s also important to be aware that fraudsters may try to take advantage of those in the holiday giving spirit. Hundreds of charity scams, which deceive individuals in to thinking they’re donating to legitimate charities, were reported to BBB Scam Tracker in 2016. Charitable giving should always be rewarding, so keep these tips from your BBB in mind to maximize your impact this holiday season:

The holidays are a season of giving – not just to family and friends, but to charitable organizations as well. According to GivingTuesday.org, Giving Tuesday “kicks off

• Before doing anything, look up the charity at give.org. BBB Wise Giving Alliance (WGA) helps donors make more well-informed giving decisions and promotes high standards of conduct among charities. They evaluate charities against comprehensive Standards for Charity Accountability, and accredit those who meet all 20. When you look up an organization at give. org, you can see exactly where your donation goes – whether it be to programs, salaries, overhead

costs, fundraising, etc. If you want to ensure your money is going to research rather than education or awareness (or any specific use), you can find these details at give.org. Although participation is voluntary, it should raise a red f lag for donors if charities haven’t disclose any of the requested information to BBB WGA. In 2016, give.org’s BBB WGA charity reports were viewed around 3.5 million times. • Research soliciting organizations. During the holiday season you’re likely to receive phone calls and mailers from charities every day. However, if you’re contacted out of the blue about donating to an organization, be wary. It’s possible that the charity doesn’t actually exist, and is using a fake but legitimate-sounding name and spoofing the Caller ID to create a false sense of security. Even if the organization is legitimate, you may not want to give them your money. BBB has warned in the past about charities that use donations mainly for fundraisers’ fees, salaries, and other administrative costs. So if a charity is asking for an on-the-spot donation outside of your local supermarket or at your front door, don’t succumb to pressure or emotional appeals. Check out the charity online at give. org and if you still want to donate, do so directly through their website. If you believe you’ve been contacted by a fraudulent charity, report it to BBB Scam Tracker at bbb.org/scamtracker.

• General donation tips. When charities seek support for the same cause, their names can be very similar. Before you give, be sure you have the exact name of the charity to avoid a case of mistaken identity. Avoid donating with cash, and ensure check donations are made out to the organization, not the person soliciting donations. Keep records of your donations; this includes receipts, canceled checks, and bank statements. Keeping these documents will allow you to document your charitable giving at tax time. Although the value of your time as a volunteer is not deductible, out-ofpocket expenses (including transportation costs) directly related to your volunteer service to a charity can be. Be wary of charities that are reluctant to answer reasonable questions about their operations, finances and programs – to be safe, find out this information for yourself at give.org. Unfortunately, you can’t automatically trust an organization just because it claims to be charitable. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, so follow this guide to ensure you don’t regret your charitable donations this holiday season. You can reach your BBB at info@bbbemail.org or (510) 844-2000, or by visiting goldengate. bbb.org.

COURT GRANTS COUNTY MOTION TO PERMANENTLY BLOCK TRUMP ADMINISTRATION FROM STRIPPING “SANCTUARY JURISDICTIONS” OF FEDERAL FUNDS

The County of Santa Clara was the first jurisdiction in the nation to seek emergency injunctive relief based on the immediate harms and unconstitutional coercion caused by Executive Order 13768, which President Trump issued on January 25, 2017. The Executive Order purported to grant Trump Administration officials the power to declare state and local governments “sanctuary jurisdictions,” and to deny them federal funding or take other enforcement actions against them on that basis. As a direct result of the executive order, the County of Santa Clara risked losing roughly $1.7 billion in federal funds— representing nearly 35% of its annual revenue—for critical County services such as medical care, urgent mental health services, public safety, and basic food and nutrition programs. County Counsel and Keker, Van Nest & Peters lawyers argued that the order violated basic separation of powers

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – In a historic ruling issued November 20th, U.S. District Court Judge William H. Orrick declared unconstitutional the key provision of the Trump Administration’s Executive Order targeting “sanctuary jurisdictions,” and permanently enjoined its enforcement nationwide. Lawyers from the Santa Clara County Counsel’s Office and its outside counsel, Keker, Van Nest & Peters LLP, argued the case before Judge Orrick on Monday, October 23. The court, in April, issued a preliminary injunction blocking the provision. Today’s ruling makes that order permanent.

principles, coerced local jurisdictions into acting as federal immigration enforcement officers, and denied due process. Today, the court agreed, and granted summary judgment on all of the County’s claims. “This is a historic victory, protecting residents of the County and jurisdictions across the nation from President Donald Trump’s unconstitutional abuse of power,” said County Board of Supervisors President Dave Cortese. “Our County will continue to welcome and embrace all people, no matter how much this Administration tries to threaten or divide us.” “This is a clear rebuke of the Trump Administration’s illegal effort to take away federal funding for critical County health, safety, and emergency services,” said County Counsel James R. Williams. “Today’s decision vindicates a core constitutional principle—that the President cannot use federal funding to threaten local governments.” Twenty amicus briefs were submitted in support of the County’s motion for a permanent injunction. Combined, the amicus briefs represent a diverse group of individual and entities, including the State of California and other States; cities, counties, sheriffs and police chiefs from around the United States; California community colleges and school districts representing over one million California students; civil rights, immigrant’s rights, and LGBTQ rights groups; unions; law scholars, non-profit service providers; faithbased organizations; and technology companies.

BLACK FRIDAY: HOW TO HAVE YOUR BEST ONE YET!

NOVEMBER 24 - 30, 2017

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, has become one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Enticed by price cuts on electronics, toys, and everything in between, consumers flock to stores in the hopes of completing their holiday shopping in one chaotic, and savings-filled, day. According the National Retail Federation, 164 million Americans plan to shop during the 2017 Thanksgiving weekend, and holiday retail sales are expected to increase to $682 billion. With that much money on the table, businesses are doing all they can to attract customers and stand out from the competition. However, it’s important to do your research: in 2016, consumers nationwide filed more than 1,300 complaints with BBB against retail stores! Completing your holiday shopping while sticking to a budget is hard enough, so let your BBB help you navigate the complexities of Black Friday with these tips: • Do your research. Before doing business anywhere, make sure to look up the company at bbb.org to see their BBB Business Profile, which includes information about the business, their complaint history, BBB Customer Reviews, and any major advertising issues. It’s also smart to look up prices, find deals, and comparison shop online before the main event so that you can go in with a game plan. Make sure to read product reviews of potential purchases before heading out so that you don’t have any regrets. • Protect your identity. Identity theft can happen at any time, and fraudsters might try to take advantage of the swell of shoppers on Black Friday. It’s ok to use public Wi-Fi to read product reviews and check out businesses on bbb.org, but be careful entering any personal information when connected. Steer clear of online banking and social media – your log-in information could be stolen. It’s also

important to be aware of your surroundings and watch your wallet – someone might try to snatch it while you’re occupied comparing TVs. • Watch out for deceptive advertising. You’re bound to see ads for deals that seem too good to be true. Unfortunately, some of these advertisements may be misleading at best and fraudulent at worst. Make sure to read the fine print, as ads often come with a multitude of restrictions. BBB’s AdTruth campaign can help you identify and avoid common schemes and highlights bad ads. If you see false advertising while out shopping you can report it at bbb.org/council/ad-truth/ as well. • Read up on return and exchange policies. Before you make a purchase, make sure you understand the return and exchange policies, and keep your receipts in one place in case you need to take something back. Some stores may not let you return specific “final sale” items, charge restocking fees, or only refund you in store credit. If you’re shopping for presents, get gift receipts and save all warranty information in case a problem occurs. • Watch out for phishing. You’re bound to receive emails from brands advertising huge sales. But be careful, some might be phishing. Fraudsters can create fake, look-alike business websites to trick you in to entering credit card information, so search for the company’s website independently instead of clicking on any link. Be careful clicking on links on social media or from unfamiliar or unsolicited senders, and look up businesses you don’t know on bbb.org before engaging with them. Check out bbb.org to look up a business, file a complaint, write a customer review, report a scam, read tips, follow us on social media, and more! You can reach your BBB at info@bbbemail. org or (510) 844-2000, or by visiting goldengate.bbb.org.

TEEN CREATES NATION'S FIRST WEARABLE APP TO PREVENT FARM WORKER DEATHS FROM HEAT ILLNESS

SHA FTER , Calif. - Fighting to reduce the high numbers of heat illness and deaths among farm workers in her beloved Central Valley, a concerned California teen has created an app to connect farmers, contractors and farm workers through Apple watches that prov ides instant health data and critical heat aler ts. Now, she seeks funding to bring the app to the f ields v ia a "Star t Some Good " crowdsourced campaign. To help, donate now at https:// star tsomegood.com/CalorApp to bring the summer 2018 pilot to hundreds of farmer workers. Nearly two-thirds of A mericans are experiencing an increased number of extreme-heat days due to climate change. Nowhere is the impact felt more directly than California's already sizzling agricultural f ields. Faith Florez, a 17-year old senior in high school and the granddaughter of farm workers, created the app Calor to help protect farm workers from death and heat illness, by prov iding them w ith timely aler ts and data. "I want to prove that technolog y to protect farm workers in times of excessive heat can be applied as easily as the A mber A ler t notif ications we already receive, w ith life-sav ing data sent straight to their w rists as they toil to put food on our tables," said Florez. To get the project star ted, Florez's original proposal for the farm work heat stress protection app was selected by graduate coding students at USC's Viterbi School of Engineering in 2016. Calor— the f irst-ever farm worker heat notif ication web-based application— is the f inal product of nearly a year of work and intense meetings w ith farmers, contractors, farm workers and state regulators. California farmers and contractors have agreed to prov ide Apple Watches to farm workers at the beginning of the har vest job, as par t of the summer 2018 pilot. In the future, Florez believes farmers w ill benef it from anticipated reductions in workers compensation insurance rates due to the risk mitigation of fered by Calor. Initial funds raised w ill help fund the development costs and to boost the number of farm workers par ticipating in the program. A ll donations are tax-deductible. SHAFTER, California. Some Good" (Empieza algo bueno).

CYBER MONDAY: TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND SAVING MONEY

Monday: 1. Do your research. Before buying, look up the business at bbb.org and look over its BBB Business Profile to see its rating, complaint history, and customer reviews. Researching a company and reading reviews before making a purchase can save you from making the same mistake others did before you. Consider buying from trustworthy BBB Accredited Businesses. 2. Beware of “too good to be true” deals and deceptive ads. Don’t believe every Cyber Monday ad you see. You’ll probably see ads online or receive email offers advertising suspiciously low prices. Make sure the site is professional, and free of spelling and grammatical errors. Better safe than sorry; it’s better to pass up on a “great deal” than pay for a product and either never receive it or realize the advertisement or product details were misleading. Take your time and read the fine print before submitting your order.

Imagine accessing all of the deals and savings of Black Friday without having to leave your comfy couch and face crowds. If this sounds like a dream come true, you’re not alone! According to the National Retail Federation, 78 million Americans plan to shop online this Cyber Monday. Unfortunately, scammers and unethical businesses may use the popularity of this shopping holiday to take advantage of consumers. Although online shopping has many benefits, it’s

important to watch out for scams. According to the BBB Risk Index (bbb.org/riskreport), online purchase scams are the fourth riskiest scam to consumers. In 2016, more than 2,700 online purchase scams were reported to BBB Scam Tracker – and 74% of targets lost money! Additionally, consumers nationwide filed a whopping 14,500 complaints against online retailers with BBB in 2016. Common complaints include paying for items but never receiving them, deceptive “free trial” offers, and issues returning products and receiving refunds. Your BBB suggests following these eight tips to avoid an online shopping mishap this Cyber

3. Beware of phishing. Don’t open any links or attachments from unsolicited emails - even if the advertised Cyber Monday deals seem irresistible. It’s better to type the URL directly in to your search bar, or look up the company on bbb.org and follow the link in its BBB Business Profile. Also, be on the lookout for phishing emails and websites that are impersonating real businesses. Hover over links and examine logos carefully. Remember that impersonation is easy; anyone can take a company’s logo and products and set up a fake website using a legitimate domain. If you suspect you’re being phished, report it to BBB Scam Tracker to help warn others. 4. Be secure. Check the site’s security settings and privacy policy and understand them. Make sure the URL starts with “https://”, where the “s” stands for secure. Also, look for the small closed errores de ortografía y gramática.

lock icon in the address bar. Don’t give away any unnecessary personal information, and be certain that you’re giving your payment information through a secure website. If the site shows a BBB Seal, click on it and make sure it links to the correct BBB Business Profile to confirm its authenticity. Protect your computer as well: make sure you have firewall, anti-virus, and antispyware software. Run virus scans regularly and make sure your software is up-to-date. 5. Pay with a credit card. A credit card may offer more protection than other payment methods; you can dispute a charge if you don’t receive the item. Additionally, consider it a red flag if the site will only let you use less-traceable payment forms. 6. Document everything. Keep documentation of all confirmation pages, emails, and any other records. Print these out to be extra safe. 7. Read the return, cancellation, and refund policies very carefully. Make sure to look at the site’s contact page and FAQ to see what methods of contact are available should an issue arise. Consider it a red flag if they don’t have a toll free phone number and can only be contacted via email. 8. Carefully read the product details. Many people think they’re buying one thing but receive another because they didn’t read the fine print. Make sure you’re getting the size, color and other specifications that you want. Follow these tips to feel confident shopping online this Cyber Monday. Report and research online shopping scams to bbb.org/scamtracker to help warn others. You can reach your BBB at info@bbbemail.org or (510) 844-2000, or by visiting goldengate.bbb. org. virus con regularidad y asegúrese de que su software esta actualizado. 5.
