WHAT MAY HAPPEN DEFINES WHAT WE NEED TO PREPARE FOR the most powerful democracy in this world, has been a peaceful transition. Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR Outside my kitchen window today I watched several squirrels scurrying around foraging for food. One had an apple in his mouth; another a walnut. The birds, bluejays, wrens, blackbirds, morning doves and titmouse's feeding at the bird feeder seemed to have an understanding amongst themselves because they fed in a certain 'pecking order'. I noted that the squirrels had very bushy tails. Was their very bushy tails an indication that the coming winter weather would be quite severe? These animals have instincts that enable then to survive the bad times which they know are coming soon. I hope all enjoyed a happy, festive thanksgiving holiday with their family and friends. Let's be thankful that so far, the transfer of power and authority to govern America,
However, this nation's residents have to prepare for a very harsh political winter (just as the squirrels). Trump is still who he presented himself. As Trump goes through the process of White House staff selection and appointments to his Cabinet, he also is revealing his 'pale and male' propensity. Several appointees have a history of extremist machismo behavior and ideology. Perceived loyalty to Trump may be the most important trait, rather than commitment to “American Ideals' embedded in the U.S. Constitution. This bodes ill for many important domestic programs and policy issues. Using the ultra-conservative approaches to be implemented through executive orders. With a Republican majority in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, the public policies which may become the “Law of the Land” will be conservative. Once he realized that he would
be the 45th U.S. president, and after he had that 90 minute first briefing session with President Obama, Presidentelect Donald J. Trump's demeanor became more sober. Several mainstream news media commentators made that observation. 'We, the People', at least some, had spoken with their votes. The conservatives and their ideologies will prevail for the next four years...and maybe more. What may the future Trump Administration do? (1) The 'global climate change issue' will not be aggressively addressed. The Trump Administration will respond to 'push-back' efforts, but too many cabinet appointees do not accept that 'global climate change' is an issue, despite knowing that 97% of all weather scientists agree that 'greenhouse gases' must be reduced by 2%. Trump himself does not believe that global warming is an issue. Remember that Trump told coal miners that their jobs would come back; that he had no problem with the use of
fossil fuels. (2) The vacant seat in the U.S. Supreme Court will now go to a conservative appointed judge because the U.S. Senate refused to endorse highly qualified and regarded Judge Merrick Garland, who was proposed by President Obama in early 2016. The Republicans will now have 52 votes in the U.S. Senate. Thus the appointment of a conservative Supreme Court Justice is almost certain with the result that the U.S. Supreme Court will once again be 'conservative'. (3)After his meeting with President Obama, Trump indicated that two features of Obama Care (2010 Affordable Care Act) would be retained-- Insurers could not refuse coverage due to existing medical issues and youth could be covered up to age 26 by their parents medical insurance policy. (4) The funding of required infrastructural projects will receive Democratic support because the Republican's bare majority in the U.S. Senate will need 8 Democrats to cross the aisle to have the 60 Senate votes needed to pass this legislation.
That is how it will be for the next four years and maybe 4 more. The Democratic Party needs new leadership which neglects no public policy issue nor the constituents which are impacted. The working class folks need to monitor and assess the 'return on investment' received from the Democratic Party. As an advocate of Latinos, Hispanics and Chicanos, if this does not happen, then these constituencies need to align themselves with political parties which deal unrelentingly with their priorities: jobs, affordable housing; living wages; ability to make purchasing choices in one's own best interest... especially in education which sustains the American Dream. Since what happens defines what we must prepare for, we may no longer be quiet nor submissive; we must be vigilant and responsibly speak up when our priorities are not included nor attended to.
El Clamor de los Soñadores Por José López Zamorano Para La Red Hispana Sé que hablo a nombre de muchos cuando afirmo, sin temor a equivocarme, que pocas personas han sido el centro de tanta admiración e inspiración como nuestros jóvenes “soñadores”, los merecidamente llamados “dreamers”, que no sólo cambiaron el curso de su historia y de nuestra historia colectiva, sino que sensibilizaron el corazón de millones de personas en este país y el mundo. Armados con un profundo sentido de dignidad personal, los soñadores encabezaron una gesta heroica que llevó al presidente Barack Obama a revertir su resistencia inicial a establecer un programa de alivio migratorio y a implementar primero el Programa de Acción Diferida para Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) y después su ampliación y su versión para adultos DAPA, aunque éstos últimos sigan entrampados en los
tribunales. Si la motivación presidencial fue política o electoral, es menos relevante que el desenlace: Más de 725,000 jóvenes tienen no sólo permisos de trabajo y protección contra la deportación, sino que se han convertido en un modelo de activismo político, pacifico, de aspiraciones legítimas, como los americanos que son, excepto por que no tienen papeles legales. Hoy, esos mismos jóvenes que nos dieron el ejemplo de patriotismo en su lucha por un trato justo y humanitario para ellos y sus familias, viven en un estado de incertidumbre, de zozobra emocional, ante la posibilidad de que se materialice la amenaza de la próxima administración de eliminar las acciones ejecutivas del presidente, incluida la implementación de DACA. Su temor es entendible porque se encuentran en una posición
vulnerable, al haber sido fichados por las autoridades federales, quienes saben quiénes son y donde viven, en caso de buscar su deportación a sus países de origen. Es preocupante que en este momento hayan aumentado las llamadas de ayuda a las líneas de prevención del suicidio. Por ello tuvo razón el presidente Obama cuando apeló personalmente al presidente electo Donald Trump a “pensar con detenimiento” antes de poner el riesgo el estatus de los soñadores y tuvo doble razón cuando afirmó que la mayoría de la población no quiere ver que estos jóvenes regresen a una vida en las penumbras de la clandestinidad. Un grupo de legisladores demócratas pidió incluso al presidente saliente emitir un perdón “retroactivo y prospectivo” de su estatus indocumentado, lo cual no les daría sin embargo un estatus permanente.
Cientos de ellos viajarán desde Nueva York, desde las oficinas del equipo de transición del presidente electo, hasta las puertas de la Casa Blanca, encabezando una “Caravana del Valor” para mostrar que no tienen miedo, pero también que merecen un trato digno y justo del nuevo gobierno. Qué mensaje más oportuno para el Día de Acción de Gracias. El clamor de los soñadores es legítimo y está enraizado en los valores fundamentales del pueblo norteamericano. Vinieron a está país como infantes traídos por sus padres y se ganaron nuestro respeto y admiración. StatePoint If you are college-bound or already enrolled, experts say it’s worth investing the time to investigate scholarship opportunities -even if you think you may not be eligible for most opportunities. According to a recent study, more than a third of college costs in the U.S. were covered by scholarships and grants in the 2015-2016 academic year.
• Be proactive. Apply for scholarships every year. Approximately 50 percent of available scholarships are for students already enrolled in college. • Be diligent. Pay attention to details. Follow instructions and proofread carefully.

“Have a passion for designing greeting cards? There’s a scholarship for that! Interested in helping people understand the perils of texting when driving? There’s a scholarship for that too,” says Holler.
• Be on time. Meet deadlines. If an application can’t be submitted electronically, use certified mail. Stay organized and ahead of deadlines by using automated calendar alerts.

"Into Sergio" Wins Big In Real to Reel Global Youth Film Festival in Hollywood, CA San Jose, CA - - Mt. Students from the Multimedia program have won several film festivals throughout the years on a local, national, and now international level! The film centers around Sergio Conriquez's family, growing up in East San Jose, and his personal opportunities for college and breaking barriers to enter Silicon Valley's technology industry as a software engineer, while knowing that Latinos represent less than 3% of employees in the tech industry. "We wanted to make a film that spoke to a broader audience about the East Side of San Jose and the Latinos who live here, like me, and the challenges that we face and concerns that we have about our future, including college and career prospects," said Conriquez. It’s a healthy idea to understand just what your Medicare coverage includes.
NAPS It’s that time again—Medicare Open Enrollment season. From now until December 7, anyone over 65, or those turning 65 in 2017, can enroll in Medicare health plans and prescription drug coverage. Here are five things you should know before you enroll: 1.Learn the ABCs and D. Medicare can be difficult to understand. Here are the basics: •All beneficiaries receive Original Medicare—Parts A and B. Part A (hospital insurance) covers inpatient hospital services, skilled nursing home care and hospice. Part B (medical insurance) covers doctor’s visits, outpatient surgery and some preventive services. •Part C is an alternative to Original Medicare, called Medicare Advantage. These plans, offered by private insurers, provide coverage equivalent to Original Medicare. Some may provide additional coverage, like vision, hearing, dental, prescription drugs and even wellness programs. •Part D covers prescription drug costs. •Medicare Supplement Insurance, offered by private insurers as plans F, G, K, L, M and N, supplements Original Medicare to help pay for uncovered services, such as copayments and deductibles. 2.Review your current plan. Coverage can change each year so review your current health plan and decide whether your coverage meets your medical needs:
doctors, hospital, and prescription drugs. Open enrollment period is the only time you can select a new Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D plan. 3. Identify gaps in coverage. Original Medicare doesn’t cover all common health care expenses, such as co-payments, deductibles and long-term care. According to a study from the Bankers Life Center for a Secure Retirement, nearly half of middleincome baby boomers are concerned about not being able to afford these health care expenses. Many Americans are adding Medicare Supplement coverage or opting to buy Medicare Advantage in lieu of Original Medicare to address expenses not covered by Medicare. 4. Don’t fall for “less is more.” If you sign up for a Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan, look beyond the cost of the premium. A less expensive premium isn’t necessarily a better deal. Analyze all financial variables including co-payments, in-network providers, deductibles and additional fees to determine your best option. 5. Seek help. Visit <www.medicare.gov> to access “Medicare & You,” which includes everything you need to know about Medicare and enrollment. The website also offers a Plan Finder tool to compare Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans available in your area. A local financial advisor can also help you weigh your options and choose the best combination of benefits for your physical and financial well-being.

To make the syrup, fill a small pot with water. Bring to medium and slowly add sugar, cloves, vanilla bean, cinnamon sticks and orange rind. Once sugar has dissolved, remove from heat and let steep for 15 minutes, until it is a golden orange color.

Supervisors Request Plan for Aiding Immigrants Who May Face Deportation
San Jose - Responding to community concerns about potential changes in deportation policies with a change in administration in Washington, Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors President Dave Cortese and Supervisor Cindy Chavez are promoting a plan to keep residents informed about their rights and provide legal representation to those who may need it.

Suzanne Potter California News Service SACRAMENTO, Calif - California's foster-care system looks after 60,000 children a year, and a new study points out ways to make improvements, by giving foster parents more of a voice. Researchers at The Annie E. Casey Foundation suggest that state agencies make their treatment plans with the observations of the foster parents, treating them as partners, not just service providers. Denise Goodman, a child welfare consultant, said foster parents are typically closest to the child, so their perspective is especially valuable. "Foster parents want to be involved in the child's case planning, in the treatment planning for the child, in their school, in their health and mentalhealth processes," Dr. Goodman explained. "But oftentimes, those systems push foster parents out." The study said some foster parents have been hamstrung by regulations in the past, and need legal protections that empower them to make everyday decisions for the kids in their care, from sleepovers to after-school activities and even haircuts.
Jennifer Rodriguez, executive director of the Youth Law Center said her organization has launched the "Quality Parenting Initiative" in nine states, including California. The program pushes state agencies to prioritize high-quality foster parenting. "Up to this point, we have thought of foster parents as primarily 'the beds' in the system, and that all of the professionals on the team do the healing work for young people, and that perspective is backwards," she said. Roberto Favela, vice president of foster care and adoption for Uplift Family Services in Campbell, California, said the State Department of Social Services launched a reform of the entire system last year with an emphasis on supporting families so they can keep children in the home, and foster parents are key to its success. "They're getting out of residential institution settings into family community placements and decrease the time to achieve permanency, meaning that child is returned to his family, or is adopted," he said. The state has already revamped its foster-care regulations and is now moving toward raising payments to foster parents.

At the December 6, 2016, Board of Supervisors meeting, Supervisors Cortese and Chavez will ask the Office of Immigrant Relations to partner with San Jose’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and non-profits to develop a plan to ensure that immigrant individuals and families receive timely and accurate information about changes in federal immigration policies that could affect their ability to live and work in Santa Clara County. The plan will expand legal services for undocumented residents who may need representation for hearings or in preparing documents. “We will do everything we can to make sure our residents know their rights and have
access to legal services to protect them from unjust deportation,” said Board President Cortese. “The County has long strived to be a place where immigrants can live without fear of being uprooted from their homes. That doesn’t go away with a new administration in Washington.” Said Supervisor Chavez, “We must ensure that families are not broken apart without due process – and that means making sure that they have legal representation,” said Supervisor Cindy Chavez. The Board of Supervisors meeting will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, in the Board Chambers at the County Government Center, 70 West Hedding Street, San Jose. COUNTY COLD WEATHER SHELTERS FOR HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES TO OPEN NOV. 28
Program expands to shelter 35 homeless families at Arturo Ochoa Migrant Center in Gilroy SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. -Each year, the County of Santa Clara’s Cold Weather Shelter Program (CWSP) provides homeless individual and families with a respite from cold and inclement weather from the Monday after Thanksgiving through March 31, with up to 395 additional beds offered at shelter locations. Beginning Nov. 28, the program will offer 130 shelter beds at the Gilroy Armory and 125 beds at the North County Winter Shelter in Sunnyvale. Additionally, the County has expanded its program this year to offer shelter to 35 homeless families at the Arturo Ochoa Migrant Center in Gilroy. “Sheltering homeless children, families, and individuals is of critical importance,” said County of Santa Clara Supervisor Mike Wasserman. “We must do all we can to prevent cold weather deaths and remember that every single person who comes to the shelter is somebody’s son or daughter, brother or sister, mother or father and they need our help.” The Gilroy Armory Shelter and the Sunnyvale Shelter will provide warm beds, two nutritious meals a day, and a hot shower to clients. A variety of supportive services will also be offered, including guidance to help set short-term goals, employment resources, medical care, and referrals to other services. Volunteers provide haircuts and donated toiletries and clothing are available to those who need them. Both County shelters will be operated on a referral basis, working closely with HomeFirst to identify individuals/families who will be referred to the shelters to have a guaranteed bed throughout the CWSP period. HomeFirst will coordinate referrals for both sites. One of the key things we do to prevent illness and death is to operate the Cold Weather Shelter Program for the County of Santa Clara,” said Andrea K. For many people experiencing homelessness, a shelter stay is the first step

on the path to a permanent home.” The new Ochoa Winter Family Shelter located at Arturo Ochoa Migrant Center in Gilroy will offer shelter to 35 homeless families, and up to 140 additional beds. The center, located on Southside Road, will provide intensive case management services to all the families, enabling them to receive the appropriate assistance they need to make the transition to stable housing. For homeless families seeking shelter in the Gilroy area, they can call St. Joseph’s Family Center for a referral at 408-842-6662, ext. 21. “The Cold Weather Shelter Program provides shelter to bring homeless adults and families in from the cold,” said Bob Dolci, Housing and Homeless Concerns Coordinator with the Santa Clara County Office of Supportive Housing. “We strive to make additional beds and warming centers available during extreme and inclement weather.” The Office of Supportive Housing can expand its shelter capacity and open winter shelters early for inclement weather when there is forecasted overnight low of 38 degrees or lower with a probability of rain less than 50 percent; or there is a forecasted overnight low of 42 degrees or lower with a probability of rain of 50 percent or greater. During declared Inclement Weather Episodes, up to 192 additional beds will be available at other shelter locations in the County, including Bill Wilson Center, City Team Ministries, HomeFirst’s Boccardo Reception Center and the Gilroy Armory, Life Moves’ Georgia Travis House and Montgomery Street Inn, Project WeHOPE and Salvation Army. FIVE TAKEAWAYS FROM THE OAKLAND RAIDERS 27-20 WIN OVER THE HOUSTON TEXANS Eddie Paskal Senior Insider, raiders.com The Oakland Raiders packed their bags and flew to Mexico Sunday afternoon, and in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, they flew back to the Bay Area with a 27-20 win over the Houston Texans in tow. It wasn’t their prettiest win of the season, but Head Coach Jack Del Rio’s squad handled business on Monday Night Football, beating the Texans at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. With the win, the Silver and Black are now 8-2, and combined with the Kansas City Chiefs Week 11 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Derek Carr and Co. now sit alone atop the AFC West. Next on the agenda is a true home game against the Carolina Panthers, but before we look ahead to that game, let’s take a look at five takeaways from the win over the Texans. 1. These Raiders can win ugly The Raiders have seemingly found new ways to win each week of the 2016 regular season. They’ve won by the skin of their teeth, they’ve won in dominating fashion, and they’ve won relying heavily on the arm of their Pro Bowl quarterback. Well, add a new one to that growing list, because Monday night, the Raiders won ugly. The Texans outgained the Raiders by 29 total yards, and when all was said and done, the Silver and Black had rushed for just 30 yards, but regardless of the statistical disparities, Head Coach Del Rio’s group found a way to fly back home with a win. “Ugly, pretty, a win is a win,” said defensive tackle Stacy McGee. “I’m just happy with the win. I’m just proud that everyone hung in and fought, and now we’re 8-2.” While Monday’s effort wasn’t the Raiders best of 2016 – not by a long shot – the win at Estadio Azteca, was significant because it showed that even when things aren’t firing on all cylinders, the Silver and Black can buckle down and find a way to beat a quality opponent. 2. Monday’s win proved that football is indeed a game of inches Halfway through the fourth quarter, with the game tied 20-20, the Raiders defense delivered its best pair of back-to-back plays of the 2016 regular season. After an impressive kickoff return by Akeem Hunt, Brock Osweiler led the Texans into the red zone, and with 7:07 left in regulation, he and the Houston offense found themselves facing a 3rd and 12 on the Raiders 16-yard line.
Lamar Miller received the handoff on third down, but was pushed out of bounds just short of the first down marker, and on the next play, the Raiders defense stood stout yet again, stopping Hunt mere inches away from a first down.

They always say that football game is a game of inches, and Monday night at Estadio Azteca that sentiment proved true, literally. “That’s when you have to buckle down and play your best, when the game is on the line,” defensive tackle Justin Ellis said. “Like [defensive end] Khalil [Mack] says, ‘by, any means.’ That’s what you have to do.” Ellis and the big fellas up front did just that, and their ability to get a strong push in the most critical moments of the game undoubtedly helped the Raiders secure their eighth win of the season. 3. Jalen Richard just keeps providing a spark There’s just something about the rookie running back from Southern Mississippi, isn’t there? “I just try to come in every day and make an impact every game I can, and help the team [make] plays, and to help the team win,” Richard explained. “It shows in the confidence that the coaching staff has in me to put me in those situations to make plays, and put me in the best situations that show my skillset. Any opportunity that I have, I have to make the best of them.” No. 30 has certainly made the most of the opportunities he’s been given in 2016, as he ranks third on the team in rushing yards, and has also been a valuable contributor in the return game. 4. Bruce Irvin came to play Monday night The Slash Brothers were rocking and rolling Monday night at Estadio Azteca. Khalil Mack finished his night with yet another sack – his seventh in the past five games – and was a disruptive force all evening, and his production was paired perfectly with what Irvin was able to bring to the table as well. Gone are the days of the Silver and Black permanently taking up residence in the cellar of the AFC West; as General Manager Reggie McKenzie and Head Coach Del Rio have executed their plan, and as a result, the Raiders have just secured their eighth win of the season, and are now currently standing alone atop the division. Now, there’s still a lot of football left to play – six games, with three very important division games remaining – but that doesn’t mean that some of the Raiders players aren’t appreciating how far they’ve come over the past couple of
seasons. “It sounds great,” McGee said when asked about the team’s record. “It feels good. I’ve been here for a while, and it’s the first time we’ve won eight games, and to be first place in the AFC West, that’s a blessing.” Like we said earlier, it’s important not to look too far down the road, but as of today, the Oakland Raiders are in the first place in the AFC West, and that is reason to smile. However, that smile will be a lot bigger if the Silver and Black are still in this position in six weeks time; that I can promise you.

Some of our neighbors, friends, and family fear changes in immigration rules or enforcement that could separate their families. Others voice concerns about proposed federal "registries" of community members of the Muslim faith. Still others point to the nationwide spike in "hate crimes" in recent days. I have sought -- through Spanish-language television, social media, and in public demonstrations -- to convey a simple message to our wonderfully diverse community: "We've got your back." What do I mean by that, "We've got your back?" We cannot control the events in Washington, D.C., but we can do much to care for each other here at home: We will Not Tolerate "Hate Crimes" in San José Police Chief Eddie Garcia and the rest of our Police Department are committed to enforce the law against anyone engaged in committing hate crimes against our residents, such as last week's attack on a hijab-wearing student at San Jose State University. The immigration status of the victim or of the reporting party do not matter, and will not be reported. Changes to immigration laws and enforcement remain within the province of federal policy makers. However, the police chiefs of most major U.S. cities --including our own -- agree that local police should not involve themselves in federal immigration enforcement; doing so undermines public safety, by discouraging critically-needed cooperation in diverse communities. Consider, for example, how fear of apprehension or deportation could undermine our efforts to ensure reliable reporting of fires or medical emergencies, provision of witness statements, reporting of victimization, tipping about pending gang violence, or testimony in court. Moreover, our sparsely-staffed police must focus their scarce time on violent, predatory, and other high-priority crimes. We will continue to follow the best practices of local law enforcement professionals nationally by staying out of immigration enforcement. We Will Protect the Constitutional Rights of San José Residents Campaign rhetoric does not always receive the benefit of prior thoughtful analysis, so we cannot know if assertions made on the stump -- such as those relating to Muslim "registries" -- will materialize into action. Nonetheless, we will closely monitor any proposed legislation or executive actions from the new administration, and work closely with our congressional representatives, other major cities, and if necessary, the courts, to protect the Constitutional rights of our residents. We've had success joining together in the past and will be prepared to do so again. We Will Support Our Community Through Our Office of Immigrant Affairs In my first weeks in office, we created an Office of Immigrant Affairs to take advantage of then-existing federal programs to legalize status of our residents and improve access to City services-such
as for the immigrant entrepreneurs who launch half of our City's small businesses each year. Director Zulma Maciel and the City have made considerable progresslaunching "citizenship corners" in a dozen libraries, hastening the translation of key applications and documents, and boosting multilingual small business permitting assistance, for example. OIL JUNKIES OF THE 21ST CENTURY: IT’S TIME TO WEAN OFF FOSSIL FUELS it being the main water source in the area. Just last January there was a spill in Montana from a pipeline that leaked 30,000 gallons of crude oil into the Yellowstone River. The tribe is trying to prevent an accident from destroying their water source. Currently there are two million miles of pipeline in operation across the United States. The practice of moving crude oil around in underground pipelines presents challenges. Energy Transfer has had 30 pipeline incidents between 20062016. They spilled a total of 9,565 barrels and paid $9,562,035 in property damages. In 2016 alone, Energy Transfer had five incidences, with 7,832 barrels spilled and $2,406,472 in property damages.
CJ Quinn EarthTalk Energy is America’s most controversial issue to hit the 21st century. Currently, our dependency on oil is greater than ever. We use this nonrenewable resource on a daily basis. In fact, oil, accounts for the largest percentage of the worlds energy consumption. At 30 billion barrels of oil per year. This is 2.5 billion barrels of oil per month on average. We use oil to heat and cool our homes, for transportation and to operate our factories and machines. Carbon and hydrogen molecules that have been dormant for millions of years are syphoned out of the earth’s crust and made into liquid gold. Our dependency on fossil fuels is due to it being our main source of energy. The United States is the largest consumer of oil and the third largest crude oil producer in the world. The Natural Gas Association of America estimates that by the year 2035 the United States will spend more than $600 billion in new oil and gas infrastructure. Today, there are 190,000 pipelines operating in the United States. Pipeline safety is under increased scrutiny. Oil extraction and transporting of the oil, account for many accidents. Transporting oil through pipelines can have major consequences. There are random explosions and spills due to old, corroded pipes that eventually rupture. The recent fuel pipeline explosion that took place in Alabama on Monday, October 31, 2016, is still burning. Colonial Pipeline, based out of Atlanta, owns that pipeline. It supplies the entire region from New York down to the Gulf Coast where it starts. This pipeline supplies 40 percent of refined fuels to this area. Due to this accident, the cost of gasoline has shot up for all of the people in that region. The pipeline continues to burn and
so far as much as 168,000 gallons of gasoline are in flames. According to the Associated Press this is their 178th accident since 2006. Oil transportation is a risky business. Accidents frequently happen whether the oil is in a pipe flowing through the ground, on a train, on a truck or is being carried through the oceans on a ship. Error is bound to happen. It is just when and to what extent of a natural disaster are we going to face. According to the list of pipeline accidents in the United States in the year 2015 alone, there were 35 accidents. A total of 17 states where accidents occurred, 267,880 gallons of crude oil lost and caused $4,480,364 in property damage. There were 5 deaths and 21 injured. The annual number of accidents on oil and petroleum pipelines has shot up almost 60 percent, matching the rise in crude oil production. Another pipeline that is getting lots of attention at the moment is the Dakota Access Pipeline. Energy Transfer owns the Dakota Access Pipeline. They are in the process of building a 1,172-mile pipeline that begins in North Dakota, crosses through South Dakota, into Iowa and ends up in Illinois. We need to begin the process of weaning ourselves off of the fossil fuels. Our planet earth is suffering. “It is a fact that oil and natural gas sector is the second-highest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions,” stated the Environmental Protection Agency. The fracturing and fracking is a major component of this industry. 225 million metric tons of carbon dioxide are emitted a year into our atmosphere. Greenhouse gas traps heat in the atmosphere, making the earth warmer. Scientists call this global climate change, when the average temperature of earth increases. Scientific consensus on climate change is that all major science agencies in the U.S. including NASA, NOAA and the EPA “agree that climate change is occurring and humans contribute to it.” Climate change is at an unusually rapid rate in the year 2016. Compared to 2,000 years ago, global temperatures have risen quite significantly over the last 100 years. This is projected to continue changing at a faster pace than any other time in history. The global sea levels have risen 7.5 inches on average since 1870. Our seas are predicted to rise by 1-4 inches if this warming trend continues at this speed. Global warming could have far bigger implications than we could handle. It could affect our crops. If it gets too hot to grow certain crops with lesser amounts of water to grow the crops, then this balance is out of order. Our water sustains us. Warmer weather means more droughts and less water. We will have power outages and black outs. The snowmelt fills our
lakes, rivers, and streams. We could have less snowpack, earlier snowmelt and reduced water supplies. This would also affect recreation in the mountains for skiing, snowboarding, and all the businesses that depend on the snow. Our plants are growing and blooming earlier in the spring and surviving longer in the fall. One quarter of our plants could become extinct. The animals need the plants to live, so they are going to be affected. Just losing one species kicks our balance off and could affect our predators, pollinators and sources of shelter. Then there is ocean acidification. Our coral reefs, which are created by millions of tiny animals called corals, make skeletons and provide habitat for many fish and other ocean creatures. The warmer temperatures in the ocean are creating coral bleaching, which is damage to the corals. These shallow tropical waters could lose all of the live corals by 2050 if we continue on this path. This in turn will disrupt the food web that connects all living things in the ocean. Humans have a difficult time comprehending nature on a cerebral level, it is immeasurable. We experience the ‘awe’ of it in our day to day living. Sunsets, rainbows, whales, elephants, ancient trees, or a rose, all of those ordinary experiences are extraordinary. In order to combat global warming and keep our planet free from disaster we must wean ourselves away from damaging energy and step into the renewable resources that are out there such as wind and solar power, and electric vehicles. We must pay attention to all of the incredible minds out there that are inventing the next, best and cleanest energy. Must we continue to create environmental catastrophes in order to provide energy for our planet? Humans thrive on progress, but at what price are we paying to progress only with one energy source that is unsustainable and toxic. Listen! I cannot hear you! Did you say something about your home, your planet? I still can’t hear you. The noise of commerce cancels out your cry. We, the people, are crying out. We shout out for help, but it seems to only arrive after the damage is done. We are filled up and overflowing. Our crying has become wailing, but still we aren’t heard.

President-elect Donald Trump is planning to tap a leading climate change denier to lead a streamlined Environmental Protection Agency while finding a way to get the U.S. out of its emissions reduction commitments made by the Obama administration under the Paris climate accord. What worries them most is Trump's call for reneging on the landmark Paris climate accord which secured commitments from the world’s largest polluters to scale back emissions. The agreement just went into force and the U.S. is committed to it for four years, but Trump insiders report The Donald may try to submit the agreement for ratification by an unsympathetic Senate (Obama has maintained ratification isn't necessary) in efforts to derail U.S. participation. “If Trump yanks the United States out of the Paris agreement, the deal won’t die, but momentum could wane,” reports Brad Plumer on Vox.com. “One can imagine China and India deciding they don’t need to push nearly as hard on clean energy if the world’s richest and most powerful country doesn’t care. At best, progress would slow. At worst, the entire arrangement could collapse, and we set out on a path for 4°C warming or more.” Another sore spot for environmentalists is Trump’s attitude toward the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Initially Trump said he would disband the agency, but more recently said he would keep it in a stripped down form refocused on its “core mission of ensuring clean air, and clean, safe drinking water for all Americans.” Myron Ebell, a leading climate skeptic with the Competitive Enterprise Institute and no friend to the environmental community, is slated to run the new leaner EPA. Meanwhile, proponents of pipelines to move petroleum products from the great gas and oil fields of the northern U.S. and Canada are overjoyed at the Republican sweep of Election
2016. Given Trump’s stated goals of reducing the federal government’s role in energy and environmental policy while encouraging more infrastructure projects to connect production with markets and consumers, environmentalists are bracing for a revival of the much-disputed Keystone XL pipeline project that President Obama rejected last year. There are fears as well of a green light for the Dakota Access Pipeline project currently in a holding pattern as native and environmental protestors stage a civil disobedience campout nearby. Not surprisingly, shares in the two companies behind the respective projects rallied following the election. For their part, environmentalists are already starting to refocus on what they can do without the support of the White House. “Under President George W. Bush, the environmental community took the battle to the courts and Congress and watch-dogged political appointees; we blocked attacks on the environment; we galvanized the public to take action,” says Kate Colwell, an activist with the non-profit Friends of the Earth. “After the more recent fights to kill the Keystone XL pipeline, ban fracking and shut down coal plants, the environmental movement is stronger than we have ever been.” “We will have to harness our new energy, join together, and use every strategy possible to fight against hate and greed and environmental destruction,” she adds. “While I wish we had a different fight before us, we must fight the one presented to us. The future of our country and planet depends on it.”

“Moana” is A Voyage Worth the Trip
Disney’s newest animated film has elevated the “Disney Classic” with its look into a remarkable culture and mythology Arturo Hilario El Observador It feels too soon to say it now, but I believe there will be kids in as few as a couple days repeating an oft mentioned line in Disney’s new film, “Moana”: “I am Moana of Motunui. You will board my boat, sail across the sea, and restore the heart of Te Fiti.” As we’ve covered before the creation of Walt Disney Animation Studios' 56th film “Moana” involved an approach which signaled good things for this film off the bat. Working with the Oceanic Story Trust, which was a collection of expert cultural advisors from the different island groups of the South Pacific, the filmmakers were able to cultivate a story which was truly representative of the history and culture of Pacific Islanders. As an exploration of a new culture, Moana’s creators have tapped into a rich Polynesian mythology and created a fictional work that blends what makes a Disney film so admirable, with an introduction of such a great but underrepresented civilization. The story revolves around Moana’s people, who have not left their island home for centuries. Once a skilled seafaring people, they inexplicably stopped navigating the oceans. Moana has a special relationship to the ocean, and she expresses time and time again that she would like to see what’s beyond the predetermined coral reef area which surrounds her island existence. Moana’s father, Chief Tui (Temuera Morrison) is determined to keep her on the island and continue the tradition of great leaders, which she will eventually be as she grows into the role. The community is beautiful, and bountiful with scenes of tapestries being created, and traditional tattoos being made. Again, it’s such a breath of fresh air from the traditional princesses, dragons and lore of other Disney films. There’s so much to see and awe at in this film, which leaves the traditional forests, castles, and cities of other Disney films for a time 2,000 ago where the earth is a living, breathing, moving entity. Using aspects of the legend of Maui, the demigod

who could create islands by pulling them out of the sea, the film sets to explore the idea of expectations, exploration and selfdiscovery. In the film the title role of Moana is voiced by first time film actress Auli’i Cravalho, who does not leave anything lacking in terms of her delivery. Her singing voice, as well as her comedic cues and overall representation of the animated character of Moana is fantastic. Throwing in the highest paid hollywood actor in the world, Dwayne Johnson, playing the demigod Maui, and it’s a larger than life time. One interesting thing to point out is that there is no romance subplot or love interest of any kind in this film, it’s a story about Moana and her search of self-discovery, and unlocking of heroism which she does not see in herself. You could somewhat compare Moana and Maui to an “Odd Couple” kind of relationship, but with Moana being a very noble and caring individual who pushes the down on his luck Maui to us his gifts for good.

The comedy, sincerity, and aspects of Pacific Island mythology raise this film to great heights. The music in particular adds such a beautiful element to the story. The songs may not be as catchy as “Let it Go”, but the lyrics and rhythms are certainly one’s that will be remembered. The talented composers include “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hollywood composer Mark Mancina, and Samoan singer-songwriter Opetaia Foa'i. Like I said before, Cravalho’s and Johnson’s voice acting is great, and their singing, especially hearing Johnson (as Maui) belt out some great lyrics, ended up being some of my favorite aspects of this film.

The animation is remarkable, the characters are vibrant, and the story gets from happy to scary to plain fun many times during its course. Disney and all those involved with Moana did their homework and research, they’ve crafted a story that represents a diverse and wonderful part of the world. This film joins films like “Aladdin”, “Lilo and Stitch”, “Pocahontas” and “Mulan”, to grow Disney Pictures' diversity catalog to truly be one that represents all people in this world, which makes me have utmost respect for the companies evolution.

Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has been selected by Donald Trump to be the next Attorney General. “Jeff Sessions is a drug war dinosaur, which is the last thing the nation needs now,” said Ethan Nadelmann. “Those who counted on Donald Trump’s reassurance that marijuana reforms ‘should be a state issue’ will be sorely disappointed. And not just Democrats but the many Republicans as well who favor rolling back the war on drugs had better resist this nomination.” Sessions, who once said that the Ku Klux Klan was, “OK, until he learned that they smoked marijuana,” has a track record of opposition to marijuana reform. Earlier this year, Sessions spoke out against marijuana legalization in a Senate hearing, and urged the government to send the message to the public that “good people don’t smoke marijuana.” He has also said in a separate hearing that marijuana cannot be safer than alcohol because, “Lady Gaga says she’s addicted to it and it is not harmless.” He is likely to use his power as Attorney General to close down state-legal marijuana and medical marijuana programs. Sessions is also a proponent of harsh sentences for drug offenses. Sessions was the chief opponent of recent bipartisan efforts to reduce sentences for drug offenses, demagoguing that, “this proposal would

THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA IS RIGGED #MSM
Shelly Palmer “The media is rigged. Big League,” to quote a famous media critic. But the MSM is probably not rigged the way you think it is. That said, the MSM is amoral, irrevocably corrupt and, sadly, can never be fixed. The truth is now “truthy”, reality has transmogrified into “wikiality”, facts have become f lexible, and the thin permeable membranes that used to separate journalism, opinion, commentary and entertainment have disintegrated. To help you understand why, I offer this accurate, albeit oversimplified, description of how the mainstream media is “rigged” and what you can do about it. The News Has Always Been Rigged All news content is edited before it is distributed, which means news content always has an editorial point of view. Consider the following. An ancient tribesman runs into the middle of his encampment to report a breaking news story. Breathlessly he begins, “We were out hunting by the big tree near the valley. We hunted and killed a gazelle, and just as we were preparing to bring it back here, we lost it, and Kushim the Farmer was killed.” Noticing that his story was not gathering much of a crowd, he created a quick promo by yelling, “Hey! You gotta hear this.” Then he amped up the intensity of his delivery, raised his voice, and editorialized a bit. Pointing to his bloodstained garments (art always enhances a standup), he continued, “We were attacked by a huge group of evil men from a nearby tribe. It was an
ambush. We fought until the sun was high in the sky. They killed Kushim the Farmer and they stole our food.” The editorial embellishment worked. His audience got bigger and he had their undivided attention, which he could now use to his own benefit. Our ancient reporter was a self-publisher who owned both the content and the distribution. He also had methods for measuring engagement, total audience, demographics, geographics and psychographics as well as intention, attention and attribution. But there were no fact checkers. Maybe Kushim fell off a cliff or our reporter killed him (accidentally or purposefully). Was there a fight? Was there a gazelle? Were these the facts? Are the nearby tribespeople truly “evil men?” Without third-party verification, without eyewitnesses, is this news or just a good story? Editorial license is powerful. Fast-forward 40,800 years (that’s the age of the oldest known piece of manmade media), and nothing has changed. Nothing! The goal of media is to be seen by the biggest (fill in your success metric here) audience, and the news business has always been editorialized (rigged, if you will) to benefit the publisher. Ratings Pay for Media To attract sponsors (or other benefactors), audiences need to be measured and packaged. The MSM Grail Quest is to ensure (at scale) that the right people see the right message at the right time. Bigger ratings mean bigger profits. Not
only are all MSM outlets “rigged” to accomplish this, Darwinian selection rewards ratings winners and punishes ratings losers to extinction.
make editorial choices that give them the best chance of commercial success. This misalignment of incentives and outcomes is immutable.
Independent Media Is Rigged Too
To make matters worse, as technological improvement empowers even greater consumer control, aggregating an audience and packaging it will require even more extreme editorial choices. After all, it’s way more fun to hear about a scandal than it is to listen to a presentation of “who, what, where, when and how” facts that may take you out of your comfort zone.
Even independent news organizations live or die by ratings. To the masses, a blogger with a million Twitter followers and two million likes on Facebook is obviously more popular (and therefore more relevant) than a blogger with 50 Twitter followers and a few hundred likes on Facebook. So, independent media is rigged the same way MSM is rigged. How Do You Get Ratings? “If it bleeds, it leads!” Car crashes, murders, robberies, fires, gas leak explosions, and similar sensational events have traditionally been the headlines that attract the biggest audiences. But that’s old school. A new system has evolved that is horrifyingly rigged to gather the biggest possible ratings – you can call it “infotainment” or “punditainment” or “we’re here to say what you want to hear whether it’s true or not-ertainment” or “we ran out of pundits and talking heads so we’re using our own anchors and reporters as guest and subject matter expert-ertainment” or, just call it what it is: “post-truth media.” It’s a category of content forcefully rigged to attract and engage the largest possible specified audiences – all other priorities are rescinded. Misaligned Incentives and Outcomes Our free press is not free. It is a forprofit, competitive marketplace and the competitors are highly incentivized to
So, it is YOU who have rigged the system. Your preferences for conf lict over substance. Your belief that someone with thousands of likes or followers must be smarter and more accurate and more interesting than someone with only a few. Your confirmation bias has rigged the MSM for at least the past 40,800 years. If you want to unrig it, stop paying attention to post-truth media. You are the only reason it exists.
