Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR During my entire childhood (from birth to age 17), my parents never talked to me about money, especially the need to budget what income the family could depend upon. I grew up during the 192940 Great Depression, which was an 'economic recovery process' taking 10 years or so for this nation to recover from the excesses of Wall Street investors and speculators. As one of 12 children (9 boys; 3 girls) and my father working at the steel mill only 40 hours every two weeks (three days one week; two days the next: to distribute available work amongst the local steelworker labor force), you can easily assess that our family was impoverished during this time. As a child, I never had any awareness about our family's impoverishment because both my mother, Guadalupe, and father Toribio, never talked about it openly. Somehow, the rent was paid monthly, clothing, food and a sense of loving security existed. We all

attended public schools and graduated. It was not until I married and dealt with all the family responsibilities in partnership with my wife, that I realized and appreciated the achievements of my parents. Both knew how to say NO to each and every one of their children when required. Saying 'yes' to every request is irresponsible. In partnership with my wife, I learned not to wait for someone else to lead the way when I was fully capable of making decisions responsibly.
The entry of America into WWII with the unexpected attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 changed everything. America became the 'Arsenal of Democracy'; all 14 blast furnaces at Gary Steel Works were fired up and operating night and day: 24/7/365. As an outcome of full employment the family budget expanded. However, my two oldest brothers, Seville and Andrew, were drafted, and I became the oldest son at home during my teens. It was during 1941-45 that I now recall dealing with family expenditures. The worst time was from Thanksgiving to New Years -holidays when St. Anthony's held family events. Each attendee was expected
to bring a gift or make a contribution (minimum was $5). It is upon these memories that I base the following rules about money.
(1) Talk with whoever shares responsibility about the money available. (2) Take care of your own family's basic expenses (rent/ mortgage, food, clothing, transportation). After dealing with all essential expenses responsibly, what is left is your 'discretionary money', which you may spend as you choose. (3) Avoid making purchases using credit cards because that adds costs due to the interest charges. My wife, Betty and I had that discussion during the past three days. We wrote our checks, made all payments due and planned for other payments. Upon completion we knew what was left. This approach reduces anxiety and stress levels. Over the years, we have come up with a few of our own rules. First: know what money you have available; Second: Learn to say NO. Third: If a relative
asks for a loan, discuss it with them (purpose and reason), and then GIVE IT rather than loan it, because loans between family members often end up with those involved avoiding each other later.
Make it a point to talk to your children who are planning to attend college. Mince no words about what your family can afford. Understand that it is not the grandparents responsibility to assist you unless they responsibly volunteer to do so. One way to cut costs of college training is to consider attending the first two years at a local community college. WHY? Many change their majors at least five times. Those two years attending a local community college provide that experience at lower costs. Whatever career path is chosen, have that student learn about the medium income level of the career chosen. Ensure that any and all college loans may be repaid within 10 years after graduation. Simply stated, each potential college student needs to prepare a personal 4 year business plan in which all expenses are covered. The objective is 'no surprises'.
It is because many local high school teachers & counselors do not know enough about today's high cost of college education. You do not want a youth to end up with a college loan burden which requires monthly paybacks for 10 years or more. Above all, read the 'fine print' contained in any student loan contract. Many are exempt from bankruptcy proceedings by law & regulation. After graduation, they should seek jobs which forgive or assist with the student loans. This approach will prevent many from being part of that $1.3 trillion national student loan level which exists today. During this holiday season, and into the new year, give the gift of responsible budgeting. Especially to youth applying to college; applying for scholarships; considering student financial aid/loans. If your family has no one with college training experience, ask your school districts about available mentor programs. Understand that today's dreams through responsible budgeting become future achievements and happy memories. HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!

De los 867 incidentes recolectados por el SPLC, un 32 por ciento fueron animados por un sentimiento antiinmigrante, pero el odio es una bestia de mil cabezas. También hubo casos
contra afro americanos (187), contra la comunidad judía (100), contra la comunidad LGBT (95) y contra musulmanes (49) Me atrevo a pensar que sólo son la punta del iceberg, porque muchas personas, en especial en aquellas con mayor vulnerabilidad, como las indocumentadas, han sufrido episodios similares, que no han sido reportados por un temor natural y que los han digerido como muchas otras injusticias en su contra. Hizo bien el presidente electo cuando hizo un llamado a poner fin a los actos de hostigamiento contra latinos, asiáticos y musulmanes. “Basta”, sentenció Trump. Más allá de que sólo habló del tema cuando se lo preguntó Leslie Stahl de 60 Minutes, es importante que ese mensaje no sólo sea un comentario sino una política clara de observancia de los derechos civiles.

West Valley College Sponsoring Popular Kids Can Help Curb Bullying a Discussion On DACA and Undocumented Students Colleen Logan NAPS

Last week the leaders of the UC, CSU and California Community Colleges submitted a letter to President-elect Trump urging him to continue this program. Many students are struggling w ith the possibility that their lives and educational aspirations may be dramatically altered should the DACA program be discontinued.
Contrary to previous research that suggested that as students’ popularity increased so did their bullying behavior, many parents may be surprised to learn the results of a recent study from Princeton, Rutgers and Yale Universities. It found that popular kids who publicly stand up against bullying may actually help more than school officials’ efforts to curb the behavior. While this new research is hopeful, targets of bullying are more likely than non-targets to consider suicide, which leads to nearly 4,600 young lives lost each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Signs Your Child Has Been Bullied
Saratoga, CA - West Valley College will sponsor a discussion on undocumented students and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) this Wednesday, December 7, at 2:30 p.m. in the WVC Campus Center. Leading the discussion will be Bill Ong Hing, director of the Immigration and Deportation Defense Clinic and law professor at the University of San Francisco. DACA maintains that individuals who entered the country as children and met the guidelines could request discretionary consideration of deferred action against deportation for a period of two years. DACA does not grant lawful status, but by volunteering for this

Warning signs that children have experienced bullying include depression, anxiety, loneliness, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy. They may also experience a decrease in academic achievement and participation. Long-Term Effects Of Bullying Those who were bullied and sur v ive the challenging tween and teenage years may face mental health issues in adulthood, including from anxiety and depression, and may even consider self-harm and suicide later in life. While all children face conflict, disagreements among peers can usually be resolved in some way; however, experts say, it’s the repetitive nature of bullying that can cause harm. Even as kids start standing up for each other, parents must remain involved and watch what their kids say and do faceto-face and online. Consistent and early intervention at schools and in the home can help mental health issues in adulthood as a result of bullying. During October, which is Bullying Prevention Month, and throughout the year, you can encourage
your children to stand up for their peers. One way is to approach bullying from a strength stance and teach youths to be upstanders, not bystanders. What Kids Can Do
•Children should be encouraged to say something if they see bullying behavior. By standing up and saying that it’s not OK, they will show others that bullying will not be tolerated. •Kids should also get a responsible adult involved and properly report the bullying incident. Bystander silence won’t help curb the bullying behavior. •B efriending those who are bullied can go a long way. While there are many reasons bullies pick their targets, those who seem less vulnerable may no longer be targets. •Participating in school zero-tolerance policies can help shape the future of bully prevention methods. As kids are empowered to stand up for each other, administration and faculty as well as parents should reward the good behavior instead of only punishing the bad behavior. •To help even more, children can actively participate in anti-bullying activities and projects. Dr. Logan, program director for the MS in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling at Walden University, specializes in bullying issues, including personal and societal impacts along with effects within the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Better Business Bureau The holiday season is the busiest shopping time of the year. This can lead to crowded malls with long lines and packed parking lots. Luckily, there’s another option. These days you can do all of your holiday shopping online without having to leave your couch or comfy pajamas. This is especially useful for those who travel over the holidays and don’t have room in their luggage for bulky gifts. Online shopping is a growing trend: according to a Google Post Holiday Shopping Intentions Study, in 2015 a whopping 40% of holiday shopping happened online. It’s not hard to see why - the convenience of 24/7 shopping on your computer or phone combined with great deals and the ability to do research and comparison shop on the spot is hard to resist. Online shopping has many benefits, but there are also risks involved. So far in 2016, more than 1,700 online purchase scams have been reported to BBB Scam Tracker – and the median loss is $129. Your Better Business Bureau suggests following these seven tips to avoid an online shopping mishap this holiday season: 1. Do your research. Before buying, look up the business at <bbb.org> and read its BBB Business Profile for its rating, complaint history, and customer reviews. Researching a company and reading reviews before making a purchase can save you from making the same mistake many others did before you. 2. Beware of “too good to be true” deals and deceptive ads. Don’t believe every holiday sale ad you see. You’ll probably see ads online or receive email offers from lesserknown brands advertising suspiciously low prices. Make sure the site is professional, and free of spelling and grammatical errors. Better safe than sorry; it’s better to pass up on a “great deal” than pay for a
3. Beware of phishing. Don’t open any links or attachments from unsolicited emails. It’s better to find the website directly through a search engine or look up the company on <bbb.org> and follow the link in its BBB Business Profile. Also, be on the lookout for phishing emails and websites that are impersonating real businesses. Hover over links, and examine logos carefully. Remember that impersonation is easy; anyone can take a company’s logo and products and set up a fake website using a legitimate domain. If you suspect you’re being phished, report it to BBB Scam Tracker at <bbb. org/scamtracker/> to help warn others. 4. Be secure. Check the site’s security settings, and privacy policy, and understand them. Make sure the URL starts with “https://”, where the “s” stands for secure. Look for the small closed lock icon and other trust marks. Don’t give away any unnecessary personal information, and be certain that you’re giving your payment information through a secure website. Protect your computer as well: make sure you have firewall, anti-virus, and antispyware software. Run virus scans regularly and make sure your software is up-to-date. 5. Pay with a credit card. A credit card may offer more protection than other payment methods; you can dispute a charge if you don’t receive the item. Additionally, consider it a red flag if the site will only let you use less-traceable payment forms. 6. Read the return, cancellation, and refund policies very carefully. Make sure to look at the site’s contact page and FAQ to see what methods of contact are available should an issue arise. Consider it a red flag if they don’t have a toll free phone number and can only be contacted through email. Keep documentation of all confirmation pages, emails, and any other records. Print these out to be extra safe. 7. Carefully read the product details. Many people think they’re buying one thing, but receive another because they didn’t read the fine print of the product deals. Make sure you’re getting the size, color and other specifications that you want. Follow these tips to feel confident shopping online this holiday season. Granted, certain times of year are more allergen-filled than others, but the truth is, allergy symptoms can hit you in any season – even the holiday season! What’s more, the holidays bring unique triggers such as mold from evergreens inside your home, dust from long-stored decorations and food allergens in holiday foods. “When you top off holiday allergens with the hectic pace and stress this time of year can bring, you have a recipe for a very sneeze-filled season,” says Dr. Stephen Tilles, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “No one wants to be a Scrooge during the holidays. With some planning and precautions, it’s possible to reduce your exposure to allergens and have a more pleasant season.” The ACAAI offers these tips to help navigate the many seasonal triggers you may face during the holidays: Dodging decoration disaster Decorations are meant to make the holiday season bright, but holiday adornments can harbor allergens. Mold from Christmas trees can trigger sneezing and wheezing. Aromas from scented candles can cause congestion and affect breathing. Decorations stored in attics or garages from year to year can be a home for sneeze-inducing dust mites. Artificial trees, wreaths and garlands can be an alternative to live decorations that host mold. Remove dusty decorations from storage and clean them outside before bringing them indoors. At the end of the season, store them in sealed containers to keep out dust. Avoid using artificial scents like candles and room sprays that can trigger symptoms for people with allergies and asthma. Instead, fill your home with natural aromas by
baking holiday goodies or setting out a dish of unwrapped peppermints. Safer holiday feasting Seasonal foods are as much a part of the holiday season as tinsel and twinkling lights. However, dining as a guest in someone’s home can be a problem for people with food allergies. If you have food allergies, alert your host ahead of time. Offer to bring a dish or two that you know will be safe for you to eat. Carefully read labels on prepared foods to ensure they haven’t been made with trigger ingredients or in a facility where they might have come in contact with allergens. If you’re hosting someone with food allergies, be sure to prepare some allergen-free dishes and clearly label those that have common trigger ingredients like shellfish, tree nuts and peanuts. Avoid travel trip ups Whether you’re visiting distant relatives or sharing a holiday meal with nearby neighbors, traveling during the holidays can mean exposure to allergens. Your neighbor’s beloved dog or cat may trigger pet allergies, no matter how well she cleans the house. The sheets on your hotel room bed may be washed in a detergent that causes itching, and the pillows may expose you to dust mites. Be sure to pack your allergy medication before traveling. If you’re hosting, check with guests before they arrive to see what their allergy triggers are and get their guidance on what you can do to mitigate their exposure to allergens in your home. Finally, don’t forget that it’s also flu season and flu can trigger or make existing allergy and asthma worse. Get a flu shot, and be sure to wash your hands regularly throughout the holidays. appointments or even picking up medication. Mass deportation would result in the separation of many local families. This would require an immediate response by the County and non-profit agencies to assure child welfare and social services. “The fear of mass deportation is making our community more dangerous, because people are afraid to engage with their local government and law enforcement authorities, including to report crime, domestic violence, and child abuse or neglect,” said Supervisor Cindy Chavez, one of the authors of the proposal. The County Administration was directed to coordinate pro bono legal representation to ensure that the subjects of mass deportation receive due process of law. In addition, the Office of Immigrant Relations was directed to partner with the City of San Jose and other interested municipalities and non-profits to develop a plan to ensure that immigrant individuals and families receive accurate and timely information about relevant immigration law, federal enforcement, local government response and available resources. The Administration and County Counsel will return to the Board at its meeting of December 13 with a report detailing their assessment of resources required for both the community outreach and legal representation components of this program.

This is in response to community concerns about potential changes in deportation policies, given the incoming federal administration’s public and explicit support of mass deportations.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is backing Nancy Pelosi ahead of Wednesday’s Democratic leadership elections, the group announced in a letter on Tuesday November 29th. The group’s support comes as Pelosi heads into the first real test to her leadership since 2010 as Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan challenges her for the top spot. “Now, more than ever, we need experienced leadership that understands how to fight against attempts to unravel eight years of progress, roll back civil rights protections, and implement new policies that will harm our nation,” the members wrote in a letter signed by a majority of the CHC.

Thousands of CA Vets Almost Free from Paying Back Bonuses
Logan Pollard California News Service LOS ANGELES - It looks like thousands of California veterans will soon be released from any obligation to pay back millions of dollars to the Pentagon. The new agreement was folded into the latest National Defense Authorization Act, the defense appropriations legislation that the Senate takes up this week. Roughly ten years ago, in an effort to increase the number of troops at the height of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, 10,000 California National Guardsmen and women were incorrectly offered bonuses to re-up their service. Now, Congress appears to be coming together to protect them from their employer's mistake. Congressman Adam Schiff, D-Dist. 28, who represents the Greater Los Angeles area, said a tremendous number of veterans received these bonuses - and then years later, were targeted by the Pentagon for repayment.

"Several of these soldiers then paid them back, or suffered consequences in terms of their credit. Others really faced a terrible predicament because they used this money to buy a home or to get an education," Schiff said. "It's a terrible position to be in." Schiff 's petition to allow the guard members to keep the bonus money was widely

supported. But the defense bill has been called bloated by detractors who object to increasing military spending by $3 billion beyond what the president had sought. The bill would also give troops a pay raise of 2.1 percent - slightly more than the Pentagon had requested. And it specifically prohibits the Obama Administration from fulfilling its promise to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay. The defense appropriations bill is expected to pass in the Senate, and will likely be signed by the president. In the meantime, the Pentagon has until July 2017 to bring any cases against soldiers believed to have committed fraud in receiving bonuses. Schiff said he's ready to stand by the vets. "These soldiers had every right to feel betrayed," he said. "They were made this bargain, they were offered these bonuses; there was no reason for them to question them. And for the Pentagon, so many years later, to come after them and essentially say, 'You shouldn't have been offered that bonus, we want you to pay it back' - it's just a terrible disservice." Schiff said he's cautiously optimistic that Congress can work together to get things done in the New Year, as evidenced by this progress for veterans. He said he thinks common ground could be found with an infrastructure bill, to fix roads and update the telecommunications and energy grids.

Of course, another way to reduce the need to park is to embrace public transit and ridesharing. If you ride the bus or train—or walk or bike—you won’t have to waste time or fuel looking to park. Another way to avoid parking hassles is by using Uber or Lyft, or by joining a car-share service like Zipcar which provides dedicated parking spots all around town for its vehicles.
It’s true that we waste lots of gas and time— and create lots of stress for ourselves—in the constant search for parking spaces. UCLA urban planning professor Donald Shoup and his students observed hundreds of cars driving around four sites in Los Angeles’s bustling Westwood Village, a commercial district next to the UCLA campus, and found about one in three drivers was “cruising” in search of a spot. On average, each cruising driver spent only 3.3 minutes on the hunt over about a half-mile in distance — but the numbers add up quickly, given that some 8,000 cars park in Westwood Village each day. “Over a year, cruising in Westwood Village creates 950,000 excess VMT [vehicle miles traveled]—equivalent to 38 trips around the earth, or four trips to the moon,” says Shoup. This excess mileage in just one small business district waste some 47,000 gallons of gasoline while producing 730 tons of CO2 emissions annually. Shoup thinks crowded metro areas should increase the price of street parking to make it cost as much or more than commercial or private parking garages so as to discourage all this wasteful cruising and force drivers into dedicated parking facilities where they won’t slow down other motorists. Luckily there’s a slew of new services that make it easier than ever to park responsibly. BestParking, Parking Panda, Parker, ParkWhiz and ParkMe each provide users with access to hundreds of garages and lots in major cities across the U.S. through easy-touse Smartphone interfaces. SpotHero works on a similar model but also offers up its own dedicated discounted spots in select parking facilities. Meanwhile, SpotOn Parking is using San Francisco as a testing ground for its new service
At the meta level, American cities could follow the lead of some of their forward-thinking European counterparts like Antwerp and Zurich which have significantly reduced the overall number of (private and public) parking spaces available, in turn leading to a measurable downturn in vehicle miles travelled within city limits. If people have nowhere to park, they won’t bother driving their own car into the city. While encouraging people to use public transit, car sharing or at least parking apps is a step in the right direction, policy changes that reduce the number of spots altogether might be our best bet in reducing gas consumption, carbon emissions and the waste of time we all experience hunting for that next parking spot. State Sen. Fran Pavley, D-Agoura Hills, said it would be the largest such man-made crossing in the world, over the major commuter route that bisects the state. "Now the real work begins," she said. "The land is saved on each side of the freeway. We have to raise millions of dollars to construct an overpass over the busy 10-lane freeway." Pavley and supporters of the project broke ground before Thanksgiving on the contentious 71 acres that would be the connecting point for a future land bridge over the 101. Opponents have balked at the ambitious size of the wildlife corridor, saying the land near the freeway had been slated for commercial development in the past decade.
Pavley said many types of wildlife could use a land bridge, since the freeway creates an artificial boundary that limits their natural habitat. "And what happens if they can't crisscross it? They end up breeding and having babies," she said, "and then you become overpopulated and sort of trapped, if you will, in an area that becomes almost like an island." What the project needs most is money, Pavley said, adding that tens of millions of dollars still have to be raised. The state transportation department will design and build the wildlife overpass, but the lion's share will come from private funds. "So, we're not spending state money that goes for specific purposes like schools and roads," she said. "This is done through donations of people who think keeping some of Los Angeles County wild is worth the efforts." The Southern California overpass might be the biggest but it wouldn't be the first. Colorado, Montana, Washington and some parts of Europe also have created wildlife corridors to promote better balance between humans and wildlife. La comunidad latina es la minoría más grande en los Estados Unidos, la cual compone el 17% de la población nacional. Para 2060, se estima que hispanos constituirán el 28% de la población total, lo que equivale a unos 119 millones de habitantes. Con estos números, es natural suponer que la creciente base hispana aumentará la prevalencia de la lengua española en los Estados Unidos. Cada vez más, las escuelas están incorporando programas de inmersión en español, telenovelas españolas a menudo superan programas de televisión en inglés en las calificaciones, y traducciones al español se ofrecen en casi todas partes. De acuerdo con los datos del censo reciente, el Español es el segundo lenguaje más hablado en los EE.UU. Sin embargo, una nueva investigación muestra que esto podría cambiar en el futuro próximo.
Un estudio realizado por el Instituto de Investigación Pew encontró que mientras que la fluidez Inglés entre los hispanos en los EE.UU. se ha incrementado en más de 9 puntos porcentuales entre 2000 y 2013, el número de hispanos que hablan predominantemente español en el hogar se ha reducido en 5 puntos porcentuales durante este periodo. Este ha sido el destino de idiomas como el alemán y el italiano en los EE.UU. --a la vuelta del siglo 20, durante el auge de la inmigración europea, las lenguas europeas se hablaban extensamente; sin embargo, estas lenguas son ahora mucho menos común ya que estas familias europeas se han asimilado a través de generaciones y la inmigración de europeos nacidos en el extranjero ha disminuido. El recién electo presidente Donald Trump tiene como objetivo reforzar el control de fronteras y hacer cumplir las políticas de inmigración más estrictas, lo que probablemente conducirá a una disminución de la afluencia de los hispanos nacidos en el
extranjero en los EE.UU. Con el crecimiento de la población latina en los EE.UU. condujo por los hispanos nacidos en los EE.UU., es probable que la lengua española perderá su posición como el segundo idioma más hablado en los EE.UU.; sin embargo, las influencias culturales españolas seguirán determinando los valores e identidades estadounidenses durante el próximo siglo. La devoción a la Virgen de Guadalupe
La devoción a la Virgen de Guadalupe, se ha convertido con el paso de los siglos, en todo un dogma inalterable de la fe católica. Sin embargo, existen personas que han puesto en duda que dichas apariciones sean reales, ha llamado mucho la atención los comentarios del Papa Francisco al respecto de si son verídicas o no dichas apariciones. Un Abad llamado Guillermo Schulenburg, también puso en duda las apariciones de la Virgen Morena y hasta intentó desacreditar la existencia del indio Juan Diego, enviando una carta al Vaticano para que se le pusiera un alto a su canonización. En aquel momento miles de sacerdotes, obispos y cardenales, se opusieron al abad, adjudicándole el nombre de “católico de pobre fe”.

La Virgen de Guadalupe fue coronada canónicamente el 12 de

octubre de 1895 por el Papa León XIII. Son también notables los santuarios a la Virgen de Guadalupe en Cáceres, España y en San Salvador, El Salvador, lugar en donde también se apareció la Virgen Morena en 1953, por lo que se le edificó una hermosa basílica. San Juan Diego fue finalmente canonizado en el año 2002 por el Papa Juan Pablo II, convirtiéndose así, en el primer Santo de origen indígena.
La controversia surgió debido a unas pruebas que se le hicieron a la mantilla original, la cual según la historia, Juan Diego presentó como evidencia de las apariciones ante el poder eclesiástico. Uno de los investigadores puso en tela de juicio la autenticidad de la mantilla. Las apariciones de “la Virgen María” siempre han sido puestas en duda, lo mismo sucedió en Fátima, Portugal y con la Virgen de Lourdes en Francia.
DECEMBER 9 - 15 2016 La Virgen de Guadalupe se apareció por primera vez al indio Juan Diego, en el Cerrito del Tepeyac, el 9 de diciembre de 1531, pidiendo que en ese lugar se levantara un templo en su honor. El obispo de ese entonces, Fray Juan de Zumárraga, recibió la noticia con mucha reserva. Posteriormente el 12 de diciembre la Virgen volvió a aparecerse y le pidió al indio que recogiera las rosas que brotarían en el cerro. Juan Diego las recogió, las colocó en su ayate y fue y las mostró al Frayle como prueba de la aparición. Cuando el indio desdobló su ayate, la imagen de la Virgen de la Concepción estaba plasmada en la túnica. Y fue así como el Frayle y los demás prelados de la iglesia fueron testigos de aquel milagro. Oración a la Virgen de Guadalupe Piadosa Virgen María de Guadalupe, dales clemencia, amor y comprensión a todos los fieles que te veneran y vuelan en busca de tu noble protección. Que tu intercesión, al igual que la fragancia dulce de las rosas, ascienda a tu divino hijo, nuestro Señor Jesucristo. SHOULD YOU BUY AN ULTRA HD PREMIUM (4K HDR) TV? Shelly Palmer What Exactly Is 4K HDR?
Ultra HD (aka 4K) televisions have been widely available (at reasonable prices) for only a couple of years. The sets have four times the pixels of good old-fashioned HDTVs (aka 2K) and come in practical sizes up to 7′ diagonal. That’s all great, but with the advent of 4K HDR (high dynamic range), about 10 million first-generation 4K sets may experience an extinction-level event. So, should you buy one? Like its Ultra HD predecessor, 4K HDR (aka Ultra HD Premium) has 3840×2160 pixels. But collectively packaged under the HDR specification, 4K HDR sets feature several enhancements for your viewing pleasure, including whiter whites, blacker blacks, and a zillion more colors (that’s a technical term).
It took the industry a while to reach consensus. In 2014, the Ultra HD Alliance (UHD-A) was formed to establish voluntary minimum 4K performance criteria. There were lively discussions about exactly what the “H” in HDR stood for, what the “W” in WCG (wide color gamut) stood for – that’s the “zillion more colors” I referenced above – and how to set the minimum requirements for a 4K HDR set to sport the “Ultra HD Premium” logo. Do I Really Need a 4K HDR Ultra HD Premium TV? It doesn’t matter if you think you need a 4K HDR set or not. Soon, you won’t have a choice; it’s all anyone is going to manufacture. The main reason to have lots of pixels is to increase resolution for bigger screens. Once your screen gets over 65″, you will really see a difference between 2K and 4K. If affordable, 4K HDR is the way to go. Would I choose a 2K HDR monitor (Yes, there’s 2K HDR, and it looks amazing!) over a regular 4K monitor? Under 60″, absolutely! At 75″, I would struggle with the decision but probably still opt for 2K HDR over regular 4K. 2K sets over 75″ (if you can even find one) is a bad idea – you will see the pixels at normal viewing distances. Still a Long Way to Go While Netflix and some cable companies offer 4K and HDR content, you may not have enough bandwidth available. To stream Netflix content in 4K, you’ll need a minimum of 15 Mbps; for shows and movies in HDR, you’ll need even more bandwidth (closer to 20 Mbps) Netflix recommends a minimum of 25 Mbps to enjoy Ultra HD (4K) and 4K HDR. Even with the best compression, 4K files are still

twice as large as HD files, so bandwidth may become an issue. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray … Really? There’s no way to get around this: in the world of 4K, the best picture quality is on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. These discs (with far more capacity than standard Blu-ray discs) include metadata that tells your TV how to properly interpret color and brightness. I’m not advocating for the format, but this is a great cocktail party factoid. They’re Selling Like Hotcakes According to the CTA™, 2016 was a flagship year for 4K TVs, thanks in large part to the rollout of HDR. 4K shipments were estimated at 15 million units (+105% YoY) with a revenue exceeding $12.9 billion (+69% YoY). Most industry experts believe this trend will continue. A new report from Strategy Analytics’ Intelligent Home Group says around 250 million TV viewers will be able to watch shows in HDR by 2020, when the annual worldwide sales of HDR-enabled TVs will reach 58 million units, bringing the number of homes with at least one HDRenabled TV to 107 million.

Bay Area Sports Team Come Together to Support Community After Oakland Warehouse Fire

City of Oakland and most importantly, the families of the victims. Of these fundraisers, one of the largest in terms of social media movement and monetary support, has come from the Bay Area's sports franchises. As news began trickling in Saturday December 3rd, the Oakland A's were first to twitter, posting at 11:00am “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the #OaklandFire. We are Oakland. Donate to help.” A link to the crowdfunding website YouCaring was listed and the A's offered to match the public's donations, up to $30,000. The Oakland Raiders followed suit and agreed to match the A's funds, and when the initial $30,000 per team total was surpassed each team offered to match $50,000.

In a video released by the Warriors, the team expressed gratitude towards the outpouring of help and compassion, as well as the efforts of the first responders at the warehouse site in Oakland. In the spirit of community and teamwork, these local teams have managed to come together and help as they can to a grieving Bay Area. Although money isn't the only way to support, this will provide crucial aid to the people affected by this tragedy. On a final note, as of writing the YouCaring fundraiser sat at over $420,000.
