Headlines Helicopter Treatment for Summer Salt Marsh Mosquitoes Scheduled The Santa Clara County Vector Control District will apply a biological control agent and insect growth regulator by helicopter to reduce the emergence of adult mosquitoes. The areas to be treated are the Alviso Marsh, Smith Yard Marsh, New Chicago Marsh, and Owens Corning Marsh. Aerial treatment is necessary because the areas are extensive and difficult to treat from the ground.

No residences or businesses fall within the area to be treated. The aerial treatment is intended to minimize the number of mosquitoes and reduce the risk of mosquito bites to residents in the surrounding communities.

Santa Clara Valley Water District is accepting water conservation video and poster entries from youth / The Santa Clara Valley Water District is now accepting video and poster entries for its youth media contest until May 12. This contest is a way to create and increase awareness among Santa Clara County youth to contribute to water-saving efforts and to help respond to the severe drought that California is facing. First know that ‘oligarchy’ means governance by a faction or small group having wealth and influence.

Many are simply not aware of the impact of oligarchies in California. Today, we are all aware of the current drought crisis. However, too many are not aware of the influence of a small group on the distribution of potable water from the Sacramento-San Juaquin River Delta. Governor Jerry Brown has proposed a periferal twin tunnel project to divert Sacramento River water down to Southern California.

What many potentially impacted Californians in the San Francisco Bay Area do not know, is that the billion-

aire owners of Paramount Farms, (Stewart and Lynda Resnick), have been buying the influence necessary, to ensure that their Westlands almond orchards, are ensured enough irrigation water to continue production of almonds for export and domestic consumption.

This came to my attention when I read ‘Billionaires Influence Felt in California’s Water Policy” by Barbara Barrigan-Parilla, Executive Director, Restore the Delta, published (SF Chronicle, Insight Section, page E8, Sunday, April 27, 2014). The Resnick’s have used their money to influence officials, beginning with campaign contributions to former Governor Gray Davis ($350,000; 1999-2003), Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger ($270,000; 2003-2011) and Governor Jerry Brown ($102,000; 2011 to date). The Resnick’s also own Westlands Mutual Water Company which is a subsidiary of Roll Global, which exports

Yet the public and (California) Legislature won only observation seats at these negotiations through a legal challenge.

The CA voters, expecially Latinos, must vote in numbers exceeding 70% to ensure that the CA State Legislature knows who elected them to represent ‘We, The People’.

The State must require all existing water districts to recycle as much ‘waste/sewage water as is possible’ and also establish the production of potable water using solar and wind generated electricity to power desalinization plants along the Pacific coast. Desalinization will provide additional water reliably while adding to that produced by nature. Let’s hold accountable and responsible those public stewards dealing with this life sustaining resource.

We must ensure that a fair share of Delta water gets to Silicon Valley and SF South Bay.

The Luis Rodriguez campaign has stood for immigrant rights, labor rights, universal health care, anti-fracking, pro-environment, closing prisons, opening schools, and ending poverty. He is the only major Latino candidate in the race and was recently endorsed by the Mexican-American Political Association (MAPA).

Experts call it “job burnout” and it’s fairly common.

It happens when your job seems to offer no hope or future, and most workdays leave you feeling frustrated, discouraged, and fatigued.

Such a work environment can affect not simply your job performance but your entire life. And because it can cause

serious problems, job burnout needs to be recognized and dealt with early. Some signs include: - Once-challenging work activities now seem common drudgery.

- Co-workers, bosses or the overall company make you feel bitter or easily annoyed.

- Your job seems more boring every day.

- You care less about doing a good job.

- You dread going to work and find Sundays depressing because the next day means work.

- You lack energy at work and are easily tired.

- Your work frustrations are starting to affect parts of your life, like your marriage and relationships with your children or friends.

While recognizing the signs of job burnout is important, dealing with the problem can be difficult. While a new job seems the obvious answer, issues such as your age, education, work experience or the current economy can all

make even considering new employment very challenging.

However, a new job isn’t always the answer. Sometimes simply identifying the causes of your problems can offer solutions. Maybe it means talking to a supervisor, or taking on new responsibilities. Your company’s human resources department may be able to help with the issue.

Job burnout needn’t mean changing careers, but does require identifying the source of your current burnout.

Professional help is available through a career counselor. They specialize in helping people gain control over their working lives, as well as in identifying interests and skills related to work and career planning. You can find career counselors listed online, in your local yellow pages, or at the National Career Development Association’s website at www.ncda. ogr. Don’t ignore job burnout until it’s a serious problem.

Salchichas:

Gluten-Free Orange Pancakes with Wild Blueberry-Orange Sauce Recipe by Katie Heddleston, Healthy Heddleston, www.katieheddleston.com Yield: 12 to 15 thin pancakes, depending on size Wild Blueberry-orange sauce: 1/2 cup frozen Wild Blueberries 1tablespoon freshly squeezed orange juice 1/2 teaspoon orange zest 1 teaspoon granulated sugar (or honey) Orange pancakes: 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons gluten-free flour 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (or honey) 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice 1/4 cup milk 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon orange zest 1 tablespoon melted butter or margarine

First make sauce. In small sauce pan, combine all ingredients and place on low heat while preparing pancakes. Stir occasionally.

Smash Wild Blueberries to desired consistency.

To make pancakes, combine all dry ingredients in a medium mixing bowl. Then add in wet ingredients. Whisk everything together until well combined; batter will be thin. On griddle or electric skillet preheat to medium heat. Make sure pan is hot before scooping batter. Using 1/4-cup scoop, pour batter (but not whole scoopful into pancake shapes on griddle). Batter is thin so not much is needed for each pancake. Wait until pancake bubbles before flipping. Flip and cook other side. Continue process until all batter is used. Pour sauce over pancakes while warm.

Note: Only one orange is needed for fresh juice and zest for both pancakes and sauce.

Si se está rompiendo la cabeza pensando cómo agradecer a su madre por todos los sacrificios que ha hecho para criarlo, le doy una idea: ¿Por qué no se ofrece a ayudarla a organizar sus papeles financieros, legales y médicos para asegurarse de que todo esté en orden?

Cada año, el IRS envía millones de cartas y avisos a los contribuyentes por varias razones. Aquí tiene diez cosas que debe saber en caso de que una de éstas cartas aparezca en su buzón.

1. No se alarme. Comúnmente basta con que responda para resolver el asunto.

• También necesitará los datos de su papá para ver si su madre puede llegar a acceder a algún beneficio como cónyuge o viuda. Por lo tanto, registre también a su padre.

• Resúmenes anuales de los planes de pensión, cuentas IRA, planes 401(k) u otros planes de retiro a los cuales pueda acceder. (Revise también los resúmenes de su papá en caso de que su madre pueda llegar a obtener beneficios por viudez).

• Resúmenes bancarios de las cuentas corrientes, cajas

de ahorro, mercado monetario y CD. • Acciones y certificados de bonos de alguna compañía y resúmenes de otras cuentas de inversión.

Deudas pendientes. Reúna también los resúmenes mensuales y saldos impagos de gastos importantes como la hipoteca de la casa u otros préstamos inmobiliarios, préstamos con respaldo de la vivienda o líneas de crédito, préstamos automotores o alquileres con opción a compra, tarjetas de crédito, facturas médicas y préstamos personales.

Otros documentos importantes. Su madre debería tener documentos que indiquen cómo le gustaría que se maneje su dinero, tanto en vida como después de su muerte. Busque lo siguiente:

• Pólizas de seguro médico,

propietario/inquilino, vida, discapacidad y atención médica prolongada.

• Un testamento (y posiblemente un fideicomiso) que detalle cómo desea que se manejen sus bienes cuando fallezca.

• Un poder notarial y médico sin vencimiento que especifique quién tomará las

decisiones financieras y médicas si ella se encuentra incapacitada de hacerlo.

• Además, un testamento en vida que informe a los médicos los tratamientos y procedimientos que desea y no desea que se le realicen.

• Certificado de nacimiento, certificado de matrimonio, tarjeta del Seguro Social, planes funerarios, datos de la caja de seguridad, etc.

• Información de contacto de sus prestadores de servicios profesionales (médicos, farmacia, abogado, asesor financiero, banco, compañías de seguro, etc.). Además, debería darles a estos prestadores su información de contacto en caso de alguna emergencia.

Revise estos documentos regularmente y actualícelos cuando haya algún cambio.

Por ejemplo, asegúrese de que los beneficiarios designados en el testamento, seguro de vida y planes de retiro de su madre sean los que ella desea actualmente.

Make an afternoon project of creating instruments with stuff found around the house, such as guitars made out of empty cereal boxes and rubber bands, and maracas made out of dried beans and cans. Kids can “cover” their favorite songs or even write their own.

With a little creativity, and the right toys and supplies, you can avoid letting play time be ‘down time’ for your children’s minds.

In a press conference and rally held by San Jose State University’s Student Advocates for Higher Education (SAHE) in front of Martin Luther King, Jr. library on Tuesday, April 29th, Aguilar’s son, David Gonzalez, an aerospace engineering student at SJSU asked for support to bring his mother home. Gonzalez and his younger siblings, Ameila, and Jose Manuel have not seen their mother in three years.

Three years ago, Aguilar left the United States to visit Mexico to say a final goodbye to her ailing father. Aguilar lived in the United States undocumented for 11 years. Last month, her request for political asylum was denied.

“I’m here today asking that our fellow representatives, specifically the Republican party, to follow in her [Lofgren’s] brave footsteps and stand up for my mother,” said Gonzalez. “Our story represents a struggle of 11 million others whose families have been torn apart or live in

niaHome and #BringThemHome.At the time of the press conference, Gonzalez said his mother was awaiting a response from ICE in regards to obtaining prosecutorial discretion, which favors prosecuting aliens in a case by case basis, for example non-criminal aliens vs. criminal aliens.

Statistics, released by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, note that prosecutorial discretion is rarely used. From October 2012-March 2014, ICE exercised prosecutorial discretion in about 6.7 percent of cases.

“Although the introduction of a private bill is rare, the congresswoman’s bill serves as a clarion demand for all sides of the house of representatives to come together to enact just and humane immigration reform,” said Ray Sullivan, SAHE member.

Arturo Hilario EL OBSERVADOR In commemoration of the Battle of Puebla, or more commonly “Cinco De Mayo”, we recollect the history and experiences of all those people that helped shape the nation and lead it to a more democratic future.

One of the most interesting things about the Mexican Revolution, which happened, the Battle of Puebla, was the Adelitas, a term coined to represent the soldaderas, or Mexican female revolutionaries who fought alongside the men in the war efforts.

In the wake of the French push towards dominating Mexico there stood men, women and children who whether by force or will, stopped the advances and liberated Mexico to begin its ascent to the young, but definite, world power it is today.

It was not the end of the trials though, as a massive Civil War would take 10 years, and countless lives, to bring about a balance that would finally lead to the present Mexican identity.

After the French-Mexican war was over, there stood a type of dictatorship in

place of the French control.

Known as the era of the autocrat, Proforio Diaz, his reign lasted around three decades, up until the Revolution where he was ousted and fled to France in exile.

During this era the rebellious Mexican forces acquired a new weapon, the female soldier.

Sometimes taken by force, these women, from ranches and villages, a great number of them indigenous and with no battle experience whatsoever, were turned into revolutionaries, spawning parables of these strong women. These legends and stories eventually led to a corrido song called La Adelita.

According to folklore it was based on a true person.

The lyrics of the corrido, which idolize a woman soldier named Adelita, goes to express the sincere adoration for this person, how she is respected, strong and beautiful.

This reflected the time period as the fascination and respect for these women historically was unheard of between the gender divide.

In the beginning these women of the revolution were aides to the fighting men, providing healthcare,

food and cleaning services at camps, and wherever these soldiers were located at the moment. The shift towards fighting in the war was because of the desire of some of these women, who would have to disguise themselves as men in order to fight.

During this period of time women in the ranks were, in general not seen as equals to men. But, even through this, the women soldiers managed to help their male counterparts through espionage, (women would join enemy camps and obtain information) smuggling and actual fighting.

One of these heroines was Coronel María Quinteras de Meras, who was one of the most revered of these Mexican female soldiers. In fact, she led many battles for Pancho Villa, held a higher rank than her husband, who also fought in the same regime, and earned the respect of Villa himself. Historically, Villa was not fond of the women soldiers. So to have his esteem was a rarity, and definitely a validation of the tremendous skills of Col. Quinteras de Meras. Even within her unit, it was believed that she possessed supernatural abilities.

Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EARTHTALK Long criticized for its lack of commitment to sustainability—from supporting the dangerous mining of precious resources and exploiting factory workers to powering its data centers with energy derived from coal and not taking back products for recycling—Apple has really worked on turning things around over the past couple of years. Indeed, just this past month the company announced that 94 percent of its corporate facilities and 100 percent of its data centers now operate on power from renewable sources.

Environmentalists first took notice that serious change was afoot at Apple in May 2013, when the company brought in former Obama Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Lisa Jackson, to head its corporate environmental initiative. Since then, the company has unveiled plans showing how its new corporate headquarters—currently under construction in Cupertino, California—will use 30 percent less energy than an equivalent conventional building, while playing host to some 7,000 carbon-

sequestering trees. Apple also reports that it has decreased the material required to produce its iPhones, iPads, iPods and Macs. A new iPad Air, for instance, uses a third less material overall by weight than the original iPad. And all of the company’s retail stores will now take back any Apple products for free recycling— U.S. and U.K. consumers can even earn gift cards for turning in old iPhones, iPads and computers.

Of course, Apple still has work to do. The nonprofit, Friends of the Earth, has been on the company’s case to agree to a plan that will reign in the human and environmental toll of destructive tin mining in Indonesia and elsewhere. Tin is a major component of the solder in smart phones and other electronics, and the popularity of such items has pushed miners to extremes, and is linked to the destruction of tropical rainforests, coral reefs and commercial fisheries. Apple sent a team of investigators to the Indonesian islands responsible for producing some 30 percent of the world’s commercially available tin, but the company has yet to commit to any changes in the way it sources this increasingly valuable raw material.

As for other tech/Internet companies, Greenpeace has been assessing and tracking environmental performance of the big players for more than a decade. “The Internet we love, and the companies that run it are at a crossroads in terms of where their energy comes from,” reports the group. “Many of these companies have already chosen the road to a green internet and a sustainable future.”

Some of the best performers besides Apple include Facebook, Google, Salesforce, Rackspace and Box, each of which has committed to 100 percent renewable energy.

Greenpeace isn’t as bullish on Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr and Amazon, each of which relies heavily on coal-fired power sources for their data centers and other operations, but still says. “If Amazon and others want to stay innovative and relevant, it’s high time they made the switch to the abundant, sustainable, renewable energy of today.” Concerned consumers can sign Greenpeace’s online #ClickClean petition, asking these big players to step up and commit to renewable energy and environmentally responsible operations.

Spring is in full swing and I’m pretty sure that by now you have already transitioned from your fall and winter wardrobe onto your spring looks. But, if you haven’t done it don’t feel bad. With this crazy weather we’ve been having, it’s hard to predict if you’re going to need a coat or a tank and if you’re anything like me, you still have your entire wardrobe-- for all seasons-- available, because, it never hurts to be prepared.

Now, there are a number of Fall/Winter items that can easily transition into Spring and Summer and , as a matter of fact, trending right now. Trends that just about anyone can sport. Let’s take a look at some of them to give you an idea, and see if you can come up with your own.

Layering. A huge trend for fall, but it doesn’t have to stay there. There are a number of items that you can layer up for those not-so-hot days of Spring and look oh so cool while doing it. Do this. Take your jean jacket, a dress shirt and a t-shirt with your favorite character, and put on some jeans or even jean shorts, and go on about your day.

Preppy-it Up. Sports coats or suit jackets are not only for the office anymore. You can kick your style up a notch by using one of your many blazers with your favorite jeans, or bright colored khakis. And

Keep the Leather! You know how a leather jacket is one of the basic necessities of any man’s man? Well, you know what is better than just a plain leather jacket? A biker leather jacket.

“Es un cambio de todo a todo, desde interpretar a una villana, que nunca lo había hecho, hasta convertirme en rubia, que tampoco me había visto así y pues bueno, ando cambiándole.
