Mi Pueblo Foods in difficult financial situation San Jose-based grocery chain Mi Pueblo Foods, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last July, has asked for court permission to hire investment bankers as it seeks a financial lifeline or a possible sale of the company. 50th Anniversary of the War on Poverty “Fifty years after our nation declared an unconditional war on poverty, the battle rages on. For too many of our families, the American dream has slipped further and further out of reach. The need to eradicate poverty and create opportunity and shared prosperity is as great now as it was 50 years ago,” said President Randi Weingarten, American Federation of Teachers. “Today, nearly 22 percent of our children, and nearly 50 million Americans, live in poverty. Half of all public school children are poor—and the numbers are even higher in the South and the West. No nation can achieve economic and educational justice and shared growth and prosperity while ignoring gross inequality. For too long, our nation has pursued an agenda of austerity and trickle-down economics that has failed to propel Americans into the middle class.”

This year 2014 will have a primary election day on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. There are several local issues which will require the attention of local registered voters. Should the local elected officials to the u.S. congress be re-elected? generally, incumbents are almost always re-elected. Do review their voting record by googling. For example, google ‘House of representative Zoe lofgren’ (D-cA-19th District) to find comprehensive information. lofgren has supported legislation impacting small business, Vietnamese rights, locating u.S. Patent district office in San Jose, cA, and immigration reform legislation. The same approach will enable one to learn about congress member Sam Farr (DcA-20); congresswoman Anna g. eshoo (D-cA-18); and congress member Mike Honda (D-cA-17). representative Mike Honda is a popular elected official who is part of the Asian American caucus and an honorary member of the congressional Hispanic caucus (He learned Spanish during his Peace corps service in central America.) Yo no sabía qué esperar.

going to lose that 35 pounds next week, but you might lose 4 or 5 pounds next month.

Okay, so you’ve already broken most, if not all, of those New Year’s resolutions you made. So what? There’s no law that says you only get one chance and that it only can happen on January 1st. In fact, waiting until after the activities and tensions of the holidays end can often make change easier.

In some ways, changing habits or behaviors is similar to undertaking a home remodeling project.

So how about giving this year’s New Year’s resolutions a second chance but doing it in a way that will help you to succeed? Start by being realistic. Expecting giant lifestyle changes to happen quickly or easily is not being practical. Our bad habits usually came about in small increments over a long period of time. That usually means changing them will also take time and probably will happen in small units. You’re not

You need to start by accepting three basic things: - It’s going to take longer than you hoped. - It’s going to be more difficult than you expected. - It may even take more than one try to reach your goal.

tomorrow, but today you can make an appointment to talk to your doctor or check out the local hospital’s smoking cessation program. For weight loss, it’s easy to feel depressed and like a failure when you don’t drop that five pounds in week one, or when you slip up and eat that big dessert. So instead, set smaller, easier-to-achieve goals. Maybe it’s just skipping that morning donut this week. Next week, perhaps it’s adding a daily walk after dinner.

Accepting these concepts can give you a solid, realistic foundation from which to plan and take actions that will bring success.

Most important is not giving up. Yes, you will make mistakes. Yes, you might even fail one or more times. Studies report losing weight often takes several tries, and quitting smoking as many as eight attempts.

A good first step is to forget rigid time deadlines and instead set achievable minigoals that will eventually lead to your final goal. You probably can’t stop smoking

Just accept that you’re human and fallible, but also capable of giving it another go. Try again, and you just might have one less resolution to make next New Year’s.

Take a trip to the grocery store and you’ll encounter miles of aisles stocked with thousands of food products. every product has a story to tell or better yet, sell. information printed on packages is helpful but it’s often confusing and even a bit misleading. While lists of ingredients and the Nutrition Facts panel are there to help shoppers choose foods to fit their nutritional needs, it’s not always easy to interpret. learning how to decode the jumble of numbers and percentages is the first step in shopping for healthier foods. “The best guide for making decisions affecting your diet is the nutrition facts panel, which is regulated by the FDA and for meats and poultry by the uSDA,” said carolyn o’Neil, registered dietitian and nutrition advisor for BestFoodFacts.org. “The Nutrition Facts panel lists all of the important specs, such as calories, fats, sodium, fiber, sugar and several key vitamins and minerals.”

•Don’t be fooled by healthy looks: While package design may illustrate people engaging in healthful activities, pretty farm scenes and adorned with “healthy” words, note that the FDA does not regulate the use of creative brand names. As always, it is the nutrition facts label where a consumer can see what’s really inside. Photo courtesy of Getty Images.

Nutrition label 101 Here are some of o’Neil’s tips on understanding nutrition labels, so you can be a more informed consumer and make healthier decisions for your family. •Always note serving sizes: While a food or beverage may seem like a good nutritional fit, the first thing to notice should always be the serving size. Watch out because if you read that a serving contains 100 calories, for instance, that may be for 8 ounces of a juice beverage and the container may hold 16 ounces.

•Be aware of unhealthy contents: if looking to limit fat, sodium and sugar, pay close attention to these call outs on the label. Some foods might deliver more than your daily limit for sodium! remember that trans fat should be avoided completely. •look for the good stuff: A healthy diet consists of vitamins and nutrients which nutrition labels also spell out.

•Trust health claims: The FDA closely monitors the use of health claims on food packaging. So, if you see wording such as “heart healthy,” you can be confident the company had to meet nutrition criteria set by the FDA. Prepared with nutrition label know-how, shoppers can put this valuable information to work to make food shopping easier on the next trip to supermarket.

Prevent Car Theft and Burglary Having your car stolen or things stolen from your car can be a very stressful experience. With these few prevention tips, you can help reduce your chances of becoming a victim of these crimes. First and foremost, always keep your car locked while you are at any public place including the gas station, the coffee shop, the grocery store, etc. Secondly, park close to other vehicles in parking lots and in well lit areas to lessen the chance of being a target. Third, NEVER leave your car running while it is unattended or unlocked. No warming up the car in the driveway! Fourth, keep all valuables out of sight or lock them in the trunk. No purse, wallet, cell phone, laptop, GPS should be visible. Finally, if you discover that you are a victim of vehicle theft or burglary, call the SJPD from home/ work, 911. If you use your cell phone, call 408-277-8911. If your car is stolen, the police need the following information: •The year, make, model, color and license plate number. •VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) this is on the registration which you should not keep in the car. Keep a copy in your purse/wallet and the original at home. •When and where the theft occurred. •Descriptions of anyone seen loitering around the car before it was stolen. •Names of witnesses.

“Witness the present Mexican war, the work of comparatively a few individuals using the standing government as their tool.... in other words, when a sixth of the population, of a nation which has undertaken to be the refuge of liberty, are slaves, and a whole country is unjustly overrun and conquered by a foreign army, and subjected to military law….What makes this duty the more urgent is the fact that the country so overrun is not our own, but ours is the invading army”. By 1964 King was declared “Man of the Year” by Time Magazine, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and the uS congress had passed The 1964 civil rights Act. He could have rested with this public approval and acceptance, but he began to speak out against the Vietnam War and he was branded as “unpatriotic”. on April 4, 1967 he gave a speech, “Beyond VietnamA Time to Break Silence” at riverside church in New York city. ”We are called to speak for the weak, for the voiceless, for the victims of

our nation and for those it calls “enemy,” for no document from human hands can make these humans any less our brothers…my mind goes constantly to the people of that peninsula. i speak now not of the soldiers of each side…but simply of the people who have been living under the curse of war for almost three continuous decades now…Perhaps the more tragic recognition of reality took place when it became clear to me that the war was doing far more than devastating the hopes of the poor at home. it was sending their sons and their brothers and their husbands to fight and to die in extraordinarily high proportions relative to the rest of the population…”. (By 1975 more 1,5000,000 Americans had served in Vietnam combat; 275,000 of these soldiers were Black and 170,000 were Spanish surnamed, mainly Mexican Americans). in March, 1967 King marched against the war in the streets chicago. in 1970, led by chicano activists, 30,000 anti-war protesters, many from San Jose, took

on November 9, 1984 cesar addressed the commonwealth club in San Francisco. He said, “once social

change begins it cannot be reversed.... our accomplishments cannot be undone. la causa, our cause, doesn’t have to be experienced twice. The consciousness and pride that were raised by our union are alive and thriving inside millions of young Hispanics who will never work on a farm”. Today, we continue to witness our country attempt to solve world problems through war.

Dr. King would remind us to” keep our eye on who is dying and who benefits from war. Those who benefit most are not the poor and their families, friend or foe, yet they must daily face the barrel of destruction”.
