A ‘Comunidad del Valle’ report by Damian Trujillo, producer, NBC TV 3, informed all about transformations being planned for the soon to be defunct Laureate International Universities program at National Hispanic University (NHU). This community needs to be very involved, informed, and supportive of the future programs at this facility, which are managed by the NHU Foundation, Inc. (nonprofit). This is positive news since it builds on what exists in the East Side community, especially the future use of the Sabrato Building, funded years ago by the local Sabrato Family Foundation, Inc. What was communicated by Santa Clara University’s Nicholas Ladany, Ph.D., Dean, School of Education and Counseling Psychology and Arcadio Morales, Director of External Relations, was that a satellite campus will be established and a teacher education program will be developed at the site. Future programs include two charter schools (K-12) and a Latino/a education research institute. Dr. Ladany said, “We have a culturally sensitive mission. We honor bilingualism. It is a strength we want to embrace; we do not want to run from bilingualism. DT: “We are back here talking about the former campus of NHU. Santa Clara University (SCU) is undertaking some wonderful programs there. Let’s talk about the two charter schools there....What’s happening? Who qualifies? What is the premise? Dean Ladany, School of Education, SCU: “The Latino College Preparatory Academy and the [Roberto Cruz Leadership Acade-
my] …will be there along with a SCU Teacher Training Program. The third program will be the Latino Education Research Institute, which will be looking into policy, practice and research. This is a very unique situation. Questions are ‘What are the best practices for teachers [of] Latino students from this community? What are the best methods to be used by teachers dealing with Latino students? This will be headed by Dr. David Lopez (former President, NHU), who really understands what the community is looking for in terms of education for their kids. He is able to make that link between K-12 education and higher education.” DT: What impact will SCU be making in Silicon Valley by branching out like this? Arcadio Morales responded, “A significant one because of the two charter schools, a practical Teacher Training Program, and a Research Institute working together at one site. Future teachers will more than likely be trained at these charter schools. The effectiveness of the methodologies will be evaluated; improvements will be made; and a cadre of potential teachers will be trained who are knowledgeable in these latest improved methodologies. They will go back into the community to teach.” DT: Then this is a great opportunity for SCU to get into that campus and that community.” Dean Ladany: “Absolutely! This is a huge opportunity to show our commitment. We are not here to fail. Failure is not an option. We are going to continue to show our commitment to educate in that community. We are going to take culturally sensitive approaches, modify them until we get it right. This venture is like a ‘start-up company’. Cinthia Rodríguez EL OBSERVADOR
DT: What do you see in your crystal ball 10 years from now? Arcadio Morales: “Two basic things: An educated Latino community which will be a significant contributor to this Silicon Valley society and its economy. In this process the vicious cycle of poverty that exists in this community will be broken.” DT: “That is the key component of your project’s social justice objective that is one of your program’s mission.” Dean Ladany: “Correct. One of the challenging things is to understand what is happening in the community. We cannot come in and say ‘This is how you do it.’ One has to engage the community, especially family, who will tell us what are the best practices to educate their children. How can we best educate them to get them to college? Then to graduate schools (followed by service in this community). Those are the expectation we have today.” DT: We were talking about the achievement gap. Do you see something we could tweak? Or do a little bit better? Arcadio Morales: This is a ‘work in progress’. We will identify some key factors that can be improved to make education of Latino students more effective. We have to train culturally sensitive teachers who understand that socio-economic status may have to do with some of the learning obstacles being faced today. Cultural sensitivity means using material that helps the student relate; give him/her a voice; feel accepted and engaged in the learning process. It makes them feel alive... Kids will say ‘Wow...someone has experienced what I have gone through and it will make a differ-
ence in my life.” Dean Ladany: One thing I want to add: There are 13,500 teachers in this region. Only 10% are Latino’; only 50% are bilingual. So there is a huge gap regarding what is available for students and what we can provide today in terms of our teacher preparation program.” DT: Is it important for students to see a principal or teacher that they can identify with socially and culturally? Arcadio Morales: “That is absolutely important. We need models who look like the student and who resonate with them. Even more important are teachers who have sensitivities for cultural nuances and the pedagogy in the way these students learn. You do not nave to be ‘brown’ to teach in a classroom of Latinos, but you do have to understand where they have been and come from. And what it takes to connect with them in the learning process.” DT: Well, our community must know that there is a new exciting educational venture happening in East San Jose. Here are the old and new websites: <www.NHU.edu> and <www.SCU.EDU/ECP> Dean Ladany: Let’s go back to the main objective and purpose. We need to be training culturally sensitive and responsive teachers. To have an impact and to meet our social justice mission. To be different from what other schools have done and to do it well. Now we know what is happening.”

San Jose CALIFORNIA Attorney General Kamala D. Harris delivers remarks on 50th Anniversary of the Signing of the Civil Rights Act in Los Angeles. LOS ANGELES Attorney General Kamala D. Harris commemorated the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 at a celebration at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles. The event featured a diverse group of civil rights leaders who discussed the significance of the Act and the challenges we still face today. “The Civil Rights Act is a living, breathing document that makes clear there are certain
fundamental rights. It makes clear that there shall be equal access to education; equal access to the workplace; equal access to public accommodation; and equal access to the ballot box,” Attorney General Harris said at the commemoration. “Today, fifty years later, in the spirit of the great civil rights leaders, let us rededicate ourselves to making real the promises of the Civil Rights Act.” The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law 50 years ago by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 2, 1964.

He joins MHC as Managing Director of Music Education. “We are very excited about this program focus,” stated Marcela Davison Aviles, President and CEO of Mexican Heritage Corporation. “Our mariachi music education program is expanding with numerous requests from public schools and charter organizations and we are delighted that Orlando will be leading our efforts to appropriately scale our service in a sustainable manner.” The agency’s folk dance troupe known as Los Lupeños de San José has been transferred to the Cashion Cultural Legacy. A Silicon Valley-based nonprofit arts organization, it was founded by the late Dr. Susan Cashion, who was also a cofounder of Los Lupeños. MHC will continue to present and produce the internationally renowned cultural festival known as VivaFest, with its focus on the agency’s
primary mission of arts education. An announcement of the festival schedule and artist roster will be released in the very near future. “The transition of Los Lupeños provides an opportunity for the Cashion Cultural Legacy to complete the vision and goal of Dr. Susan Cashion to nurture the sustainable growth of the dance company for the future,” added Davison Aviles. “I am honored and excited to assume the position of chairman of the board of this vital and respected arts agency,” stated Board Chair Gonzales. “I have devoted my career to service in the public school education system and believe passionately in the positive impact of heritage music education. Se estima que la sequía que viene azotando a California causará pérdidas por 1,700 millones de dólares tan solo en el Valle Central, la zona agrícola más rica del estado, según indica un estudio preliminar realizado por la Universidad de California en Davis para el Departamento de Alimentos y Agricultura del estado.
El estudio preliminar sobre la sequía, Preliminary 2014 Drought Economic Impact Estimates in Central Valley Agriculture, indica que en el Valle Central se dejarán sin cultivar 410,000 acres, lo cual resultará en una reducción de 738 millones de dólares en ingreso agrícola. Asimismo se perderán 14,500 empleos –tanto de trabajadores de tiempo completo como de temporada- de los cuales 6,400 están directamente relacionados con la producción de cultivos.
“Desde el punto de vista de California, la agricultura representa solo un 3 por ciento del producto interno bruto, por lo que no va a afectar mucho a nivel estatal. Pero hay regiones como el Valle Central, la Costa Central y el Valle Imperial donde la economía depende de la agricultura. Ahí si habrá más afectados y se prevé un incremento en el desempleo”, señala Samuel Sandoval Solís, especialista en el manejo de recursos hídricos de Extensión Cooperativa

“Desafortunadamente son empleos para gente de bajos ingresos. El gobernador de California ya ha creado políticas para mitigar el impacto, pero los trabajadores quieren trabajo y no la ayuda de emergencia”, indica el especialista. Panorama de la sequía California enfrenta una de las
peores sequías en la historia moderna. La falta de agua afecta a muchas regiones y muchos agricultores y ganaderos están disminuyendo sus niveles de producción. La poca lluvia registrada este año, aunada a la disminución de las capas de nieve en las montañas, está causando una reducción considerable en las reservas de agua. Los dos principales abastecimientos de agua -los ríos Sacramento y San Joaquín- están siendo sobre explotados en algunas áreas. También ha aumentado el uso del agua del subsuelo y esto podría generar otros problemas. “Cuando deja de llover el agua subterránea son nuestros ahorros y como cuando nos quedamos sin trabajo (sin agua de los ríos durante una sequía) es super importante hacer un buen manejo de esos ahorros”, indica Sandoval Solís. El explica que cuando llueve suficiente por lo general
se utiliza entre 20 a 30 por ciento del agua subterránea, pero en la actualidad se está consumiendo entre 50 y 60 por ciento. “¡Significa que estamos agotando nuestros ahorros!” indica el experto. La sobre explotación del agua subterránea o mantos acuíferos puede tener varias consecuencias negativas, como el aumento de salinidad del suelo, hundimiento del suelo e incrementar el riesgo de incendios. La salinidad del suelo se incrementa cuando no hay suficiente agua para regar y realizar el lavado de la tierra, lo que podría afectar la producción de alimentos. Además, cuando el agua subterránea se agota dejando huecos en la tierra esto puede causar erosiones y hundimientos que podrían afectar viviendas, calles, sistemas de drenaje y alcantarillado, etc. Asimismo la resequedad en el medioambiente aumenta el riesgo de incendios.
Para contrarrestar esta situación, los especialistas de la UC están trabajando en diferentes áreas: han creado una campaña de información con videos en inglés y español para educar a la población sobre esta crisis y brindar sugerencias acerca de cómo ahorrar agua. También están trabajando en los condados con las agencias del control de agua para crear soluciones locales. En la región de Watsonville y Monterey, en los cultivos de fresa, frambuesa y zarzamora se cambiaron los sistemas de monitoreo de agua y se instalaron sensores a diferentes profundidades en el suelo, lo que permite saber con precisión cuándo hay que regar y cuando no es necesario. Asimismo los expertos están estudiando qué tipo de alimentos se pueden producir utilizando menos agua, sin afectar la apariencia, sabor y textura de la fruta.

A medida que esos esfuerzos avanzan, se pide a los californianos que pongan en práctica medidas sencillas para ayudar en esta crisis. Sandoval Solís recomienda: • No regar todos los días, solo dos veces a la semana. • Regar el jardín solo por cinco a siete minutos. • Reducir la ducha a 5 minutos. • Usar la lavadora de platos pues se ahorra más agua que cuando se lavan a mano. • Cerrar la llave de agua cuando se lave los dientes y en cambio utilizar un vaso con agua. • California es un estado árido, donde llueve poco y el agua que hay en el subsuelo es un valioso recurso que hay que cuidar. “Como consumidores tenemos que estar conscientes que cualquier cosa que hagamos, directa o indirecta, afectará nuestros recursos hídricos”, concluye Sandoval Solís.

WASHINGTON Los Número de Identificación Personal del Contribuyente (ITIN, por sus siglas en inglés) vencerán si durante cinco años consecutivos no son usados en una declaración federal de impuestos, anunció hoy el Servicio de Impuestos Internos (IRS). Con el fin de que todas las partes interesadas tengan tiempo para ser ajustes y permitirle al IRS reprogramar sus sistemas, la agencia no comenzara a desactivar los ITIN hasta el año 2016. La nueva política más uniforme se aplica a cualquier ITIN, independientemente de cuando fue emitido. Sólo aproximadamente una cuarta parte de los 21 millones de ITIN emitido desde el año 1996, cuando comenzó el programa, están siendo usados para propósitos tributarios. Este nuevo reglamento asegurará que cualquier persona que legítimamente usa un ITIN para presentar sus impuestos pueda continuar haciéndolo, y al mismo tiempo dará lugar a la cancelación de millones de números de ITIN sin uso. La nueva política sustituye a la vigente que entró en vigor el 1 de enero de 2013, como resultado de consultas con los contribuyentes, sus representantes y otras partes interesadas.

Bajo la antigua política anunciada en noviembre del 2012, los ITIN emitidos después del 1 de enero de 2013 vencerían automáticamente después de cinco años, aunque fueran usados correctamente y con frecuencia. Aunque los ITIN emitidos antes del año 2013 no fueron afectados por ese cambio, el IRS dijo en aquel entonces que exploraría opciones para desactivar y/o actualizar la información relacionada a los números de ITIN más antiguos. Los ITIN juegan un papel crítico en el sistema de administración tributaria y asisten con la recaudación de impuestos de los extranjeros, residentes y no residentes y otros que tienen obligaciones de pago o de presentación bajo la ley estadounidense. Diseñado específicamente para propósitos tributarios, los ITIN son emitidos solamente a personas que no son elegibles para obtener un número de Seguro Social. Bajo la nueva política: · Un ITIN expirara para cualquier contribuyente que no presente una declaración federal de impuestos durante cinco años consecutivos. · Todo ITIN permanecerá activo mientras que el contribuyente continúe presentando una declaración de impuestos. Esto incluye los números de
ITIN emitidos después del 1 de enero de 2013. Estos contribuyentes no tendrán volver a solicitar los números de ITIN ni tendrán que volver a aplicar en el 2018, como lo establecía la antigua política. · Para aliviar la carga a los contribuyentes y brindarles a sus representantes y otras partes interesadas tiempo para adaptarse, el IRS no comenzara a desactivar los ITIN hasta el 2016. Jason Alderman PRACTICAL MONEY Si usted es de los que se detienen a leer la letra chica antes de firmar algo, lo felicito—sus padres lo han entrenado bien. Si no lo es, entonces tenga cuidado: con su firma podría estar aceptando la membrecía a un gimnasio que no desea, comprando un departamento que no puede pagar o, lo que es peor, podría estar pagando el préstamo de otra persona del que usted sea co-firmante. En términos generales, los contratos son acuerdos mutuamente vinculantes entre dos o más partes para hacer o no hacer algo. Puede ser tan simple como comprar un café (usted paga $3 y el restaurant acepta servirle una bebida), o tan complejo como firmar una hipoteca a 30 años. Una vez que el contrato entra en vigencia, por lo general, no puede modificarse a menos que todas las partes estén de acuerdo. SAN JOSE POLICE DEPARTMENT New Driving Licenses Scams targeting the Immigrant Community The San José Police Department wants to warn the community on scams targeting victims that want to obtain a California driver license for non documented drivers. Several other states have issued driving licenses to the non documented drivers and now with the passing of AB 60, California will be issuing licenses. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is not issuing licenses until Jan 1, 2015.

1. Some criminals are asking for up to $1,000 each person to obtain a legal license. 2. Beware of agents claiming that they can help you by paying a fee. Some criminals are posing as DMV personnel, and lawyers with licenses. These imposters are illegally charging for services and licenses. 3. From the covers of teen magazines to countless television ads and music videos, our daughters are bombarded with images of pencilthin yet voluptuous models whose message is clearly “be
SACRAMENTO Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and state health officer, says the number of reportable sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in California increased in 2013 according to data made public beginning of July. “Sexually transmitted diseases can cause major health problems for people over time,” said Dr. Chapman. “This increase is concerning, particularly because STDs are preventable.” The data show that almost 168,000 cases of chlamydia, over 38,000 cases of gonorrhea, over 3,500 cases of primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis, almost 2,900 cases of early latent syphilis, and over 3,600 cases of late latent syphilis were reported in 2013, for a total of 216,000 reportable cases of STDs. In 2013, the rates of gonorrhea and P&S syphilis (the most infectious stages) increased substantially compared to 2012. In 2013, the gonorrhea rate increased 13 percent to 100.4 per 100,000 population, and the P&S syphilis rate increased 18 percent to 9.3 per 100,000 population. In contrast, in 2013

You see it in girls who dress to mimic the fashions of female music, TV and movie stars. You see it in young women constantly worrying about weight and appearance, or who lose in-

Many clinics offer free tests. Chapman pointed out that in addition to getting tested regularly, individuals can reduce their risk by using condoms, reducing their number of partners, being in a monogamous relationship or practicing abstinence. Profound racial disparities persist. In 2013, the African-American

CDPH also works closely with local health jurisdictions to coordinate disease prevention and control efforts statewide, including helping identify infected individuals and assuring that they and their partners get treated.

Then talk with her about how realistically some of these women are being portrayed. Ask her if this is how she or her friends really act, speak or look. Ask her about the messages being presented and how they make her feel. Are such feelings fair or realistic? Discuss the realities of advertising and other media presentations of women. It’s easy for a young girl to accept the images being presented, while forgetting the make-up artists, hair stylists, designers, and photographers making such images possible. You can also take action to help your daughter better recognize her own worth. Rather than complimenting her and other young women on their looks, compliment them on their interests, creativity, intellect, ideas and ac-
complishments. Encourage her to continue to develop her interests in art, music, sports or other activities, or help her develop new interests in areas other than appearance and popularity. Rather than just allowing your daughter to be impressed by all the media images, help her gain a realistic perspective. Encourage your
daughter to see her real value as a person, rather than measuring herself against unrealistic advertising images. If you find your daughter is showing signs of depression related to her appearance or sense of self-worth, consider seeing a professional counselor specializing in adolescents and teens.

Cinthia Rodríguez EL OBSERVADOR El Observador had the chance to interview San Jose’s very own Battle of the Bands winner Yeshua and the Hightones. They recently played at the Bacon Festival and have a lot more festivals to play. Alto sax Jarod Flores took some time to answer a few questions. EO: For the people not too familiar with Yeshua and the Hightones, how did it all start? Hightones: “All members have a vast background of performing and playing with other bands from a young age. The Hightones came together like a puzzle starting in 2005 when Yeshua Orozco (vocalist) was introduced to Anthony Perez (lead guitarist). With the same influence and inspiration of reggae music, jamming turned into songwriting and to recruitment for other members till the culmination of what Yeshua and the Hightones is today. Keviano Azevedo (drums), our drummer boy genius who also acts as producer/sound engineer, is definitely the inspiration whose skill and creativeness is something everyone must see to believe. Orozco, the front man, with energy to spare on stage is the de facto messenger of our ideals and beliefs through words and lyrics. Anthony Perez (lead guitar-
ist) has created a sound fans have come to love and expect. It doesn’t matter that he’s the baby of the group, we look to him as a main songwriter and solos to melt faces. Jason “19” Curtis (bass), along with backbone bass lines, exudes a party good time vibe to the Hightones. Edgar Fernandez, compliments Anthony with nasty guitar skanks and tasty rhythm. Fernandez is best known for having a knack for ingenious songwriting. The last member to join and solidify the group is saxophonist Jarod Flores, with an extensive background in jazz, classical, Latin, and all out sound manipulation. Flores loves putting the finishing touches to a song and live performance with melodic lines or aggressive solos.” EO: How would you describe your sound? Hightones: “What started as a joke coming from the idea of Red Hot Chili Peppers album ‘BloodSugarSexMagic,’ I describe our genre/ style as JamaicanSexRock, which sums it up in a nutshell. We’re known on paper as a reggae band, but I feel we just use Reggae as a platform to showcase and infuse the variety of music styles each member brings to the table. From Metal, Latin, Jazz, Electronic, soul, and yes Reggae. You’re sure to hear something new and original.” EO: How is it playing?
Hightones: “We take great pride in our live performance. Our fans know this and we’ve been grateful as our San Jose fan base has grown, and grown so it was only natural to participate in the San Jose Battle of the Bands. Besides the cash prize which will be used for the upcoming full-length album, we really wanted to show what we could do. Winning the top prize is another step of where we want to be, which goes right into playing the main stage at the American Bacon Fest in downtown San Jose. Any local musician dreams of playing the massive outdoors stage in the heart of downtown. When it comes down to it, we’re friends, so when you see us live you could feel the chemistry we have as performers. Playing in front of a huge crowd at the Bacon Fest was an adrenaline rush. Whether it’s 5 or 5,000 people, we’re always going to give you everything we got and leave it on stage. And with the confidence and conviction in the songs we’ve written, we want to play for more and more people, cities states, countries, you name it.” Yeshua and the Hightones have a few shows coming up. Including one at the XBAR in Cupertino on July 12 at 8pm, all ages. They will also be performing at RASTAPALOOZA on July 26 at 8pm at Johnny V’s, +21.

Avendaño EL OBSERVADOR It’s a little surprising to see a local indie post punk band with Latino roots in the scene, yet alone release a single in Spanish, but that’s exactly what The Trims, a homegrown San Jose band did. This past April, they released their first Spanish language single, “Vida.” The group has paid homage to their roots with visuals in their music videos and by including interludes from popular Latin groups. Lead vocalist, Gabriel Maciel, said the single, exclusively in Spanish, was long overdue. Maciel has roots from Mexico, like other band members Bryan Aguirre-lead guitarist, Billy Brady-drums, while bass player Tadashi Mori has roots from El Salvador. “I was afraid that I was going to come off sounding cheesy to a Spanish speaker,” said Maciel. Maciel said the band is testing the waters with the single to see if in the future an entirely Spanish language record is possible. “We played it once and it was good. Even people who
didn’t understand what I was saying said ‘the music is great,’” said Maciel. The Trims described their sound as falling into the indie, dance, post punk genre, “reminiscent of early U2, and the brit pop of the 80s90s.” You’ll be able to detect Aguirre’s love of U2 and Maciel’s love of The Doors in their music. With a strong local following, a rotation on Live 105.3, and their single featured on MTV’s long running show, The Real World, the band can credit its beginnings to Craigslist. After a few lineups and band changes ala ‘Destiny’s Child’, Maciel took to the internet to search for musicians and came across Aguirre’s ad searching for a singer and bass player. Through the ads, Maciel, Aguirre, and Mori came together. Maciel also recruited his longtime friend, Brady, to be the drummer temporarily. Eventually Brady did join officially, even though Maciel recalled “he didn’t like my music.” “He just kept coming to practice and eventually was in the band photos. He was already there. We already knew each other and we were already
building that chemistry as a band,” said Maciel.

“On a local scene some bands try to over do it,” said Maciel. “They’d be a lot of fluff in the songs and hardly ever a hook, so I decided that I wanted to trim all of the songs down to just the hooks, just really catchy things, and make them no more than 3 and half minutes long. The name comes from trimming the songs down, trimming all of fat out of the songs.”

Chemicals and Obesity Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EARTHTALK Obesity is a huge problem in the U.S. and other industrialized countries. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity rates have doubled for American adults and tripled for kids and teenagers aged six through 19 since 1980. Today, 31 percent of American adults and 15 percent of youngsters are classified as overweight. The rise in obesity and related health problems like diabetes is usually attributed to an abundance of high-calorie food coupled with the trend toward a more sedentary lifestyle, but there is more to the story. A growing number of researchers believe that certain chemicals collectively known as “obesogens” may be a contributing factor to the growing obesity epidemic. Exposure to these chemicals has been shown to interfere
(NAPS) Good news: An increasing number of Americans are recycling their trash to give it another life. In fact, more than 35 percent of America’s waste is recycled into new products. One reason may be that with the convenience of curbside pickup and the efficiency of single-stream sorting, recycling is easier today than ever before. As recycling has become more common, more and more items can be accepted at the local recycling center. Recycling Facts Still, there are a few important recycling “Dos and Don’ts” you should keep
with the way we metabolize fat, leading to obesity despite otherwise normal diet and exercise. Bruce Blumberg, a biology professor at the University of California at Irvine, first coined the term “obesogen” in 2006 after discovering that certain tin-based compounds ,known as organotins, predisposed lab mice to weight gain. In the intervening years, hundreds of research studies have found similar connections between weight gain in humans and exposure to organotins, as well as several other common chemicals found in everyday consumer products, agricultural pesticides and even some drinking water. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) reports that as many as 20 synthetic chemicals—from the BPA in plastic food storage containers and the lining of cans, to

Also, soybeans (consumed by both humans and the livestock we eat) contain a naturally occurring obesogen. There may not be much we can do about the damage
already done, but avoiding obesogens, whether from natural or synthetic, might be the best thing we can do to prevent making our obesity, hypertension, diabetes and other health problems that much worse. Says Blumberg: “Eat organic, filter water, minimize plastic in your life… If there’s no benefit and some
degree of risk, why expose yourself and your family?” Of course, avoiding obesogens alone won’t keep people from getting fat. Eating a nutritious diet and getting regular exercise are as important as ever to keep one’s weight and overall health in check.

(NOTIMEX) Por primera vez, la Galería Nacional de Retratos exhibe cartas inéditas, fotografías y retratos de la escritora inglesa Virginia Woolf, autora de “El cuarto de Jacob” (1922), “La señora Dalloway” (1925) y “Al Faro” (1927). “Tengo la certeza de que me estoy volviendo loca otra vez”, escribió Woolf en una carta de su puño y letra dirigida a su hermana Vanessa Bell, en 1941, antes de quitarse la vida en el Río Ouse, cerca de su casa de Sussex, en el sureste de Inglaterra. La biógrafa, Frances Spalding, describió a Woolf como “una feminista de su época, víctima de abuso sexual, y una escritora con un uso poderoso de las palabras. Basta leer las primeras 12 páginas de la señora Dalloway”. Spalding, quien también es la curadora de la exposición “Virginia Woolf: Arte, Vida y Visión”, señaló que “detrás de su historia hay una tremenda vulnerabilidad que fue com-
pletamente destruida a raíz de la Segunda Guerra Mundial”. La muestra explora a través del arte la vida íntima de la escritora, que vivió largos períodos de depresión que finalmente la llevaron al suicidio. En la primera sala aparece una fotografía en blanco y negro de su casa de Bloomsbury, bombardeada al inicio de la II Guerra Mundial y en la última sala una carta de despedida que marca el final de su vida. Otra de las cartas inéditas que se presenta por primera vez al público revela las dudas de Woolf sobre su propia obra. En ella se dirige al editor y director de Hogarth Press, John Lehman, a quien le dice: “Estoy casi segura que sería un error desde todos los puntos de vista publicarla”, en referencia a la novela “Entre actos”, la última que escribió la autora antes de morir. Virginia Woolf, considerada una de las escritoras y pen-
sadoras más importantes de Gran Bretaña, fue también activista política y recaudó fondos junto con el pintor español Pablo Picasso para los afectados de la Guerra Civil Española. Uno de los episodios de la exposición revela que su sobrino, Julian Bell, murió a los 29 años de edad en dicha guerra, donde fue voluntario de las brigadas internacionales. En 1938, Woolf escribió la novela Tres Guineas, donde se pregunta “cómo evitar la guerra”. Virginia Woolf, cuyo nombre de soltera era Adeline Virginia Stephen, nació en Londres, en 1882, y fue educada en su casa por sus padres Leslie y Julia Stephen. Virginia se casó con Leonard Woolf, con quien fundó la editorial Hogarth Press en 1917. Woolf murió a los 59 años de edad, el 28 de marzo de 1941, después de un período de depresión y ansiedad.

El grupo de punk rock mexicano, Los Seis Pistos estarán en el Caravan Lounge el 17 de julio en San José. Desde sus inicios la banda siempre ha tenido como objetivo crear un rock mexicano que abrace tanto la música mexicana como la extranjera a fin de generar un sonido propio. Por ello, la banda eligió inicialmente el nombre de Seis Pistos ya que dentro de la cultura mexicana es muy común tomar palabras en otro idioma y mexicanizarlas tomando los fonemas extranjeros y darles un significado distinto, tal y como sucede con la música y el nombre de la banda. Si bien dentro de sus influencias se encentran los Sex Pistols, la banda no busca emular el sonido de esa legendaria banda, sino crear un estilo propio bajo la hipótesis de que el punk no tiene reglas estéticas estrictas como sucede en otros estilos de música sino que implica tocar la música que
llevas dentro con énfasis en un mensaje. Ahora bajo el acrónimo LSP la banda ha empezado a romper sus propios paradigmas y llevar su música a nuevos niveles. La banda esta compuesta del vocalista Ivan Chavero, el guitarrista/vocalista Kenio, el bajista/vocalista Beto y el baterista “Tambo” y cuentan con 4 discos de larga duración y 1 EP con material propio. En su aniversario número 15, la banda decidió celebrar haciendo una tributo al rock mexicano reinterpretando canciones de Rock Mexicano Clásico al estilo de la banda. El disco fue grabado en Sonic Ranch (Tornillo, Texas) y fue producido por Neil Citron a fin de lograr una producción que guardase respeto al Rock Mexicano y, a petición de la banda, el productor no escuchó nunca
las versiones originales de los temas a fin de que les diera el tratamiento de música nueva y lograr una verdadera interpretación para que fuera un disco de “covers”. Rocktrospecitva contiene temas los 70´s, 80´s, 90´s y 00´s de varios artistas como Rockdrigo, El Tri, Botellita de Jerez, Caifanes, El Gran Silencio, Café Tacuba, El Síndrome del Punk, Fobia e Inspector. El primer sencillo es “Las Piedras Rodantes”, cuya versión original de El Tri fue ejecutada con guitarra acústica, armónica y voz, mientras que la versión de Seis Pistos es reinterpretada con guitarra eléctrica, batería, bajo y voz, dándole un aire más prendido, lo que de manera muy similar sucedió con el “Feo” de Rockdrigo, la cual pasó de ser una divertida versión acústica a una fuerte canción electrificada que conserva el original humor del autor original.

(NOTIMEX) En los Juegos Panamericanos de 2019, para los que aún no se define sede, el ajedrez será incluido en el programa oficial de competencias, informó hoy el presidente de la Federación Nacional Mexicana de Ajedrez (Fenamac), Raúl Enrique Hernández.
(NOTIMEX) El técnico de Pumas de la UNAM, José Luis Trejo aseguró que van por buen camino en su trabajo de pretemporada y con la adaptación del grupo, del cual destacó que se le haya dado la continuidad. En este sentido se refirió al acoplamiento que han tenido ya los argentinos Diego Lagos, Ismael Sosa, así como Daniel Ludueña que junto con el equipo base del torneo pasado, pueden ayudar mucho a lograr los objetivos del club. “Lo veo igual, hemos tenido un torneo con el equipo y eso ayuda, se han adaptado más rápido en el caso de Sosa y Ludueña. Vamos bien, vamos por buen camino. Uno está optimista de que la base se haya mantenido, eso nos

puede ayudar mucho en el torneo”, dijo. Mencionó que será una ventaja el que todos ya se conozcan del certamen pasado, aunque solamente queda la incorporación del uruguayo Matías Britos, de ahí en fuera todo marcha muy bien por lo que esperan tener un buen arranque de torneo. “Es una ventaja de que ya nos conocemos, sólo se dio la incorporación de Matías, pero a final de cuentas creo que eso nos ayudará mucho; tengo el presentimiento de que el equipo va a iniciar bastante bien”, confió. Sobre el caso de Britos, exjugador del bicampeón del futbol mexicano y refuerzo de Pumas para el siguiente año futbolístico, mencionó que “ha tenido una excelente adaptación en todos los
sentidos: en lo que trabaja, a nivel de grupo, vamos muy bien”. De lo que espera de la participación del equipo en el “Torneo Cuna del futbol”, que se llevará a cabo estos días en Pachuca, explicó que lo que se busca es mejorar para llegar bien al arranque del torneo. “Mejorar, simple y sencillamente, que el equipo llegue mejor y se siga adaptando y acoplando. Estamos optimistas y con la convicción de poder encarar el torneo y nos vienen bien estos dos partidos (en Pachuca)”, señaló. Luego de la práctica de este miércoles en la cancha dos de Ciudad Universitaria donde fue presentado Fernando González Domínguez como nuevo director de comunicación y relaciones públicas del club, el equipo viajó a Pachuca para disputar dicho torneo.
Señaló que la Organización Deportiva Panamericana (ODEPA), que preside el mexicano Mario Vázquez Raña, realiza todos los ajustes necesarios para agregar al llamado “deporte-ciencia” a la justa continental de 2019. Comentó que de cristalizarse este esfuerzo, el ajedrez podría también ser incluido como uno de los deportes oficiales de los Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos y del Caribe, que se disputarán en 2018 en Barranquilla, Colombia. Detalló que éste es un compromiso que hizo el titular de la ODEPA con el presidente de la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez (FIDE), el ruso Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, durante su visita a México en febrero. Destacó que “una vez que el presidente de la FIDE hizo entrega de la solicitud
a Mario Vázquez Raña, éste se comprometió a que a más tardar sería para los Juegos Panamericanos de 2019. Recalcó que una vez finalizada esta inclusión, “los beneficios serían mucho mayores, pues al ser considerado ya como deporte del ciclo olímpico podríamos recibir una mayor ayuda presupuestaria

por parte de las autoridades deportivas de nuestro país”. Finalmente, indicó que si bien México resultaría bastante beneficiado por este hecho, estas mismas contribuciones alcanzarían a todos los países de América Latina, ya que permitiría el desarrollo y crecimiento del ajedrez en ésta área.

CONTENIDO LATINO Cuando tienes niños, un trampolín y un juego de columpios pueden convertir tu patio en un parque de diversiones. Y aunque ya cuentes con un seguro de casa que pudiera proteger tu patio contra cualquier incidente, debes darles también a tus hijos una diversión segura manteniendo estos juegos en buenas condiciones. Aquí te damos una lista de recomendaciones para mantener el trampolín y el juego de columpios seguros:

Trampolín Las reglas son las reglas. Antes de usarlo recuerda a tus pequeños la lista de reglas y explica por qué es importante seguirlas. Por ejemplo, muchos accidentes suceden cuando un niño choca con otro. Ejerce la regla de turnos para que cada niño pueda desplazarse a gusto dentro del trampolín. Anclar, encerrar y limitar el acceso. Recuerda revisar antes de cada uso que el trampolín esté debidamente anclado en el piso para que no se voltee; que cuente con paredes de malla
o red para evitar que los niños caigan hacia fuera; y retira cualquier banco o silla que pueda servir como escalera para que los más chiquitos no alcancen a subirse sin supervisión de un adulto. Juego de columpios Revisa y repara. Los juegos de columpios se desgastan cuando no están en uso, por ejemplo durante el invierno o en época de lluvias. Antes de usarlos revisa que no haya ninguna pieza suelta u oxidada, o madera echada a perder. Repara lo necesario. Inspecciona. Asegúrate que el juego de columpios no tenga áreas en donde la cabeza o cuello de un niño puedan quedar atrapadas. Nivela y acolchona. El juego de columpios debe estar bien nivelado, colocado plano sobre el piso. También puedes poner tapetes acolchonados alrededor para amortiguar cualquier caída de los niños.
