VTA Board Approves Purchase of 38 New Buses The new hybrid diesel-electric Community Buses, manufactured by Gillig LLC of Hayward, Calif., are an energy-saving alternative to regular diesel- and gasoline-powered buses, and they are expected to have 25 percent better fuel economy than VTA’s current gasoline-powered Community Buses. These low-floor buses will make boarding easier for seniors and others who may have difficulty climbing stairs and are expected to be more reliable as well – an important factor for our customers. Colorado Makes History When Marijuana Legalization Law Goes Into Effect on January 1 Colorado will make world history on January 1st when commercial sales of marijuana become legal for adults. New Year’s Day marks full implementation of Amendment 64, the Centennial State’s ballot initiative ending marijuana prohibition. Colorado and Washington both voted to tax and regulate marijuana in November 2012, and the Colorado law is the first to go into full effect. The California High-Speed Rail Authority announced that five, “world-class construction teams” submitted qualifications to bid on the next 60-mile phase of high-speed rail construction from Fresno south to the Tulare-Kern County line near Bakersfield. The Authority will now review the applications and establish a list of the most highly qualified firms to provide design-build services for the project. Firms will be selected based on experience, technical competency, ability to perform and other factors. The qualified firms will then be eligible to submit formal design-build proposals in 2014.

Feliz navidad 2013; merry christmas: these are the words that we say to each other during any christmas season. However, this 2013 christmas has been tarnished by local happenings in our communty: A RACISM INCIDENT: the inappropriate and uncivilized behavior of four male students residing in a sJsu dormitory. At san Jose state university, the entire academic community was reacting to this supremecist behavior which revealed a low level of respect and acceptance. unacceptable and uncivilized behavior was directed at an African-American student. the abuse by
four others was reported by his parents to sJsu authorities. immediately, the incident was alleged to be a racist ‘Hate crime’. How could this happen in a very diverse student body? Where was the resident counselor? is enough known to classify the actions as a misdeamenor or a felony? the sJsu President assumed leadership by taking responsibility after the fact; the Academic Faculty council debated this incident; and the current state is that Judge laDoris cordell (retired) will be the head of an investigatory commission. meanwhile, these four students have been suspended. FOUR HOMELESS DIE FROM EXPOSURE: the county of santa clara has almost 8,000 homeless individuals residing within its jurisdiction. even mothers with kids. Almost all efforts to assist the homeless focus on affordable housing (which takes too long) and
social service/mental health programs and altruistic reactions by faith organizations. What is not included is the impact of current economic fiscal practices of commerce. tax avoidance and non-living wages are but two factors. the entire situation needs to be addressed so as to promote policies establishing how the homeless are identified; how stigma and discrimination address the unemployed, the disadvantaged, and the disabled amongst us. there are those who do not want to pay taxes to support social, mental health and health services needed by these homeless.
meal is provided. many widows have extra bedrooms, but who knows where they are located? Will these offer hospitality and shelter to homeless moms with kids? A system for volunteers is needed.
one step is to think of these individuals as ‘being unhoused’ which quickly points out that having a dwelling which is ‘my home’ is a condition which mitigates many difficulties the homeless have. the local faith congregations in Palo Alto have organzed ‘Hotel DeZinc’ whereby parish halls are used as shelters (and a daily

me encanta ver a la gente abrazar el espíritu de las fiestas. tengo que admitir que soy una especie de fan de toda la música de navidad, decoración de un arbolo douglas fir y pasar tiempo con sus seres queridos, pero es difícil tener una fiesta de cumpleaños y no sentir que es previa para la navidad. Yo no soy el tipo de persona para ser el centro de atención, pero todo un día-sobre-mi del año es agradable. Ahora que soy mayor, es dificil celebrar con un grupo de amigos e incluso la familia debido a las fiestas navideñas que están por donde quiera ellos prefieren celebrar y reunirnos en navidad. entonces me di cuenta de que podía celebrar mi cumpleaños durante todo el mes para poder pasar el tiempo con mas personas y asi complacerlos
a todos. Asi que hoy celebro con un grupo y mañana con otro y asi todo el mes. and mental health services to the unemployed and uninusred are available. sacred Heart community center and second Harvest Food Bank collect funds, clothing and food to assist the disadvantaged. even so, many of the local working poor must choose to either pay the rent or buy food. recently it was revealed that some very profitable corporations pay their workers wages that do not permit attainment of the ‘essentials of life’ (food, shelter, clothing, security and warmth according to mazlow’s Heirarch of needs. check it out via google).
too many jobs are being automated out of existence. in addition the current captains of industry are focused on making profits without any discussion about a fair profit margin or a reasonable return on investment.
the city of san Jose began debating its policy which sets minimum wage levels. this quickly seqwayed into a discussion about ‘liVing WAges’. it is time to deal with reality. the laboring class has no advocate for its perspective and experiences attained while trying to live on inadequate income levels. Having an educaiton is not the universal answer because
consider the poor, the disadvantaged, and those with afflictions. consider your neighbors and plan to “do unto others what you would have them do unto you.” the outcome will be ‘Joy and Peace’ which passes all understanding. FeliZ nAViDAD; merrY cHristmAs.

For parents needing to come to sacred Heart for help during the year the holidays are a time of great stress, often without the joy of surprising their children with gifts, and seeing their smiles and excitement on christmas morning. “Families working hard and playing by the rules are still struggling in this economy due to the high cost of living in the valley. the toy Box program completes our overall Holiday program, to make sure that every family will celebrate the holidays together with a joyful time,” said sacred Heart’s executive Director, Poncho guevara.

the santa clara Valley transportation Authority (VtA) Board of Directors elected VtA Director and san José city councilman, Ash Kalra, as chair for 2014 and VtA Director and gilroy city councilman, Perry Woodward, as Vice chair. sacred Heart brings the community together again this holiday season to make sure they can help all 6,000 children. moms and dads pick out age-appropriate toys and books for each of their children under the age of 18. Hundreds of volunteers become santa’s elves for those two days in santa’s workshop at sacred Heart community service.

Director Kalra served as Vice chair for 2013 and will replace outgoing chair Joe Pirzynski, a los gatos town councilman. He has been on the VtA Board of Directors since 2009 and has been a member of VtA’s Administration and Finance committee, where he served as vice chair in 2012 and as chair in 2013. Kalra was
elected to the san Jose city council in 2008 representing council District 2 (south san Jose). “i’m excited to lead the VtA Board of Directors in 2014,” Kalra said. “VtA has an exciting year ahead from furthering work on the BArt extension to silicon Valley, to establishing Bus rapid transit throughout the county, to working with a new general manager. i’m looking forward to partnering with the community, VtA employees and others to make transportation even better throughout santa clara county and the region.” Director Woodward also served on the VtA Board of Directors in the past year and
on VtA’s Administration and Finance committee. He is the mayor Pro tempore of gilroy, and was elected to the city council in 2007. He has served on the VtA Board of Directors since 2010. “VtA is facing an exciting future, and i’m happy my colleagues have expressed the confidence in me to help guide it through the upcoming year,” Woodward said. “VtA will need to think creatively and act decisively to meet the growing demands of the traveling public. it will take the Board’s leadership and guidance to keep VtA moving down the right path.” Both Kalra and Woodward serve on caltrain’s Peninsula corridor Joint Powers Board as well.

is one of 23 u.s. cities to win a cities of service impact Volunteering Fund grant, which supports mayors who are implementing “impact volunteering” strategies that tackle pressing local challenges. “san Jose has a tradition of embracing the power of volunteerism, and our residents’ immense talents, to address the most daunting challenges facing our community,” said mayor chuck reed. “i’d like to thank cities of service and Bloomberg Philanthropies for providing this generous grant, to support a promising volunteer-based program that can help make a measureable impact in our drive to raise student achievement throughout the city.” Amigos’ reader leaders engages adult and student volunteers to work one-on-one with K-3rd grade students to improve

their reading comprehension skills, and offers weekly workshops that empower parents to better support their child’s learning and development. the program is based in the mayfair community, a predominantly lowincome neighborhood where academic achievement lags behind other parts of the city and the state as a whole. Just 14% of students are ready for Kindergarten and only 27% of students scored proficiently on their 3rd grade english language Arts standardized test (source: Applied survey research, cA Department of education). the $25,000 cities of service grant will help Amigos’ reader leaders engage 25 volunteer mentors to provide 120 students with two-tothree hours of after-school programming each day. the grant will also allow the program to reach three dozen parents in ongoing engagement activities. Program advocates hope that these efforts will help participating students improve their reading levels by 1-1∏ years and increase overall reading proficiency in the mayfair community by 4.5 percent. the Amigos’ reader leaders program is run by Amigos de guada-
lupe, a faith-based community coalition affiliated with our lady of guadalupe church, and a partner in mayor reed’s initiative (sJ2020) to eliminate the educational achievement gap in san Jose. “Amigos de guadalupe is thrilled to support mayor reed’s vision to close the achievement gap,” said maritza maldonado, Director of Amigos’ reader leaders. “this grant will bring much needed resources into a community that has always had the will, but has often lacked the necessary resources to garner the support of its members to affect positive change. this grant will enable us to build capacity that can help sustain the mayfair community into the future.” the cities of service model focuses on impact volunteering – volunteer strategies that target community needs, use best practices, and set clear, measurable outcomes to gauge progress. Dozens of cities across the nation have adopted the model since its introduction in 2009. cities that received first round grants from the cities of service impact Volunteering Fund in october 2012 already have shown success
leveraging volunteers across a range of issue areas. For example, Fall river, mA created its first urban tree farm to support ongoing revitalization efforts; Austin, tX surveyed 10% of city-owned land to identify invasive plant species for removal to protect the local environment; and little rock, Ar is engaging more than 3,000 elementary school students in a comprehensive anti-obesity and healthy eating initiative to improve health outcomes. more than 60 mayors applied for cities of service impact Volunteering Fund grants to support the implementation of nearly 90 initiatives. American Counseling Association While the holiday season is a happy time for most people, it can also be a time of sadness and despondency for some. Holiday depression can be a very real, but correctable problem. There are numerous reasons why the holidays can have us feeling blue. One is the unrealistic expectations we may have for ourselves and the season. Constant media images of the “ideal” holiday can create fantasy goals impossible to achieve. We may start feeling low because we

aren’t invited to all the best parties or aren’t having the “perfect” holiday we imagine others are enjoying. This comparing ourselves to how things “ought to be” leaves us feeling that we’re missing out and being cheated for some reason. The holiday lifestyle can also contribute to holiday depression. Our diets may change, usually including more candy, cake and alcohol than normal. We also often exercise less. Busy holiday schedules, coupled with less daylight and colder temperatures, can make it harder to stick to our regular workout regimen.

Combine the mood swings that go with a high-calorie, high-sugar diet with a lack of exercise and colder weather and depression can easily occur. We may feel more sedentary and lethargic, and perhaps guilty as extra pounds show up around our waistlines. Fortunately, correcting the holiday blues can be relatively easy. Simply recognizing that the media-promoted “perfect holiday” images aren’t realistic is an important first step. Refuse to compare yourself to that TV “family” or the neighbors you imagine having that rosy “ideal” holiday. Instead, focus on the good and positive in your own life and those things you really enjoy during this season. Making a conscious effort to get back to a healthier diet and to increase your amount of exercise can also do a great deal to overcome holiday depression. Lastly, don’t wallow privately when you’re down. Go meet with friends, not to discuss your feelings, but just to enjoy them socially. Friends and family can do a great deal to lift your mood. You might also find volunteering, at a local soup kitchen, animal shelter or library, can be a real mood lifter. Make a realistic effort and you should find your holiday depression abating. But if it’s not, despite your best efforts, try talking with a professional counselor. Depression can be a serious health problem and not one to be ignored at any time of the year.

Cuando compra jabones antibacterianos, ya sean de tocador o líquidos para el cuerpo, ¿busca usted la barra o botella con la etiqueta que dice “antibacteriano”? ¿Piensa que estos productos, además de mantenerlo limpio, reducirán el riesgo de que se enferme o le pase los gérmenes a otras personas? No necesariamente, según los expertos de la Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos (FDA, por sus siglas en inglés). Todos los días, los consumidores utilizan los jabones y geles antibacterianas en el hogar, el trabajo, la escuela y en otros lugares públicos. Particularmente, porque muchos consumidores los utilizan, la FDA cree que debe haber beneficios comprobados para sustentar cualquier riesgo potencial. De hecho, no hay evidencia de que los jabones antibacterianos de venta libre que existen en el mercado sean más eficaces para prevenir las infecciones que el mero uso de agua y jabón común y corriente, señala la Dra. Colleen Rogers, PhD., una de las principales microbiólogas de la FDA. Frente a esta tragedia en sus propios barrios, un grupo de estudiantes de la universidad estatal de san José y la universidad de california en Berkeley (uc Berkeley) se reunieron para tomar medidas preliminares para evitar que esto ocurra a las personas sin hogar en su propio alrededor. se recaudaron fondos, se compraron bolsas de dormir y ropa para los desamparados en san José y Berkeley.

But if you think that the rise of the hybrid car, our embrace of public transit, walking, biking and those new windows on the house are behind the trend, think again. According to the eiA, increased energy efficiency has played a role, as have recent warmer winters and the recession, but the key driver has been the swapping out of coal at power plants and industrial facilities across the country for cleaner-burning and now more abundant natural gas. the reason so much natural gas is around is the rise of hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), a technique whereby drillers inject water and chemicals into underground shale rock deposits to free up otherwise trapped natural gas. Fracking has allowed u.s. oil companies to access huge natural gas deposits from the marcellus shale in the northeast and elsewhere. the increased supply has brought natural gas prices down so that it has been cheaper than coal during the last few years. our carbon footprint benefits because
burning natural gas to generate electricity generates about half the carbon emissions of coal for every megawatt hour of power generated. But Americans might not want to pat themselves on the back for too long, as the positive trend won’t continue indefinitely. “replacing coal with natural gas reduces smokestack emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and mercury, but natural gas production and distribution comes with a host of problems, including methane leaks, contaminated water supplies, destroyed streams and devastated landscapes,” says Dan lashof of the natural resources Defense council (nrDc), a leading environmental group. “And while gas-fired power plants have lower carbon dioxide emissions than coal-fired ones, their emissions are still far too high to be considered a global warming solution.” Furthermore, eiA says our energy-related carbon emissions are already rising again given recent increases in natural gas prices that have steered some utilities back to coal. the eiA anticipates u.s. energy-related carbon emissions rising 1.7 percent in 2013 and another 0.9 percent in 2014. the most important remaining question, says lashof, is whether or not the u.s. will continue to
reduce its co2 emissions to achieve the president’s 2020 goal of a 17 percent reduction from 2005 levels—and eventually the 80 percent or more reductions needed to prevent the most dangerous risks of climate disruption. the target is within reach, he says, but power plant carbon pollution standards, among other changes, will be needed. lashof adds that the only way to keep the ball rolling is via a coordinated effort including stricter federal carbon and energy efficiency standards, new state renewable energy and energy efficiency incentives and reworked zoning and transportation policies that discourage the use of private automobiles. “We can build the clean energy future we need, but we aren’t there yet and it’s not going to happen by itself.” Also, even if Americans can mobilize to get their emissions in check, will it matter? During 2012, energy-related carbon emissions fell by some 3.7 percent in the u.s., but rose 1.4 percent overall around the world. indeed, global carbon emissions are on an unrelenting upward march as developing nations acquire the taste for the extravagant fossil-fuel-driven lifestyle perfected in the u.s.

measure the amount of yarn needed to go around each cup or box, leaving a section on each end to tie a bow. repeat, cutting a section of yarn for each cup. cut an assortment of pennants (triangles) from different prints in the stack, repeating as necessary for desired number of cups. Adhere the pennants to the center of each section of yarn. once the glue is dry and/or tape is in place, tie the banner onto each

cup and set aside momentarily. remove the tag and icon stack from the stack. cut out desired tags (or make original tags) and adhere them, one each, to the top of a lollipop stick. Place your gift into each cup, insert lollipop with tag at the top, and your gift is ready to give.

San Jose cAliForniA the san Jose earthquakes selected defenders shaun Francis and Brandon Barklage in stage 2 of the mls re-entry Draft on Wednesday. the earthquakes now have rights to the duo and may negotiate new contracts with the players. Francis, 27, is a four-year mls veteran with experience on the Jamaican national team. He has four assists in 29 appearances during his career. Francis was taken by the columbus crew in the fourth round of the 2010 mls superDraft. He began 2013 as a member of the charlotte eagles in usl-Pro before signing with the chicago Fire on July 10. Barklage, 27, has two goals and 10 assists during his five years in mls. He began his career with D.c. united as a third-round pick in the 2009 superDraft. He made 11 appearances during his three years in the nation’s capital before signing with the new York red Bulls on march 5, 2012. Barklage became a regular with the squad during his two years there, making 45 appearances while recording all of his career goals and assists.
