The tech industry is no longer comprised of a handful of introverts and math whizzes, it’s now made up of millions of dreamers who believe in a small idea’s potential to achieve global impact. But while more students are taking an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and pursuing tech careers, the diversity of the technology workforce lags behind the industry’s pace of innovation. Although women have made great strides in other industries, they are still poorly represented in STEM careers, including tech. Schools with open campuses have other challenges. Although a campuswide lockdown may not always be practical or even possible, individual buildings and classrooms can be secured. 2. Stay Focused on Proven and Reliable Practices. “Un-

tested technologies such as makeshift door barrier tactics can block first responders from entering the classroom,” said Fiel. “Having easy access to enter and exit the classroom will help to safely and efficiently save the lives of students and provide care to those who need immediate attention.” 3. Develop a Lockdown Strategy. Allegion, known for pioneering safety and security solutions for schools and universities, has security consultants who suggest having tools in place to manage comings and goings at each doorway so it can lock down on demand immediately. Three proven lockdown technologies are: • Manual lockdown—uses keys and classroom security functions to lock down a space. This is an economical option but relies on an individual having the right key at the right place. • Remote lockdown—enables classroom lockdown by remote fob within proximity of a door. It can be a cost-effective alternative to a networked system. • Centralized lockdown— this networked system, when integrated with access control software, can enable immediate school or campuswide lockdown.

Health Day, a federal observance started nearly 90 years ago to encourage Americans

to focus on the health and well-being of children of all ages. That includes helping

expecting mothers plan for a healthy arrival of their soonto-be little ones. If you’re an expectant mother, you’re likely already making your child’s health a priority by scheduling regular visits with your obstetrician, adjusting your diet and limiting certain activities during your pregnancy. But have you thought about important considerations for delivery day? For example, skin-to-skin contact with your newborn immediately after delivery can help your baby get off to a healthy start. The International Breastfeeding Centre lists numerous benefits of skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby after delivery. These benefits include a happier baby with a more elevated blood sugar level, a more stable temperature, heart rate and breathing rate. The benefits are not fleeting, however. Mothers who have skin-to-skin contact with their babies are more likely to breastfeed in the first one to four months, and tend to breastfeed longer, according to a report from

the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group, analyzing 34 studies of more than 2,000 mothers and their babies. Traditionally, skin-to-skin time has been limited to natural vaginal births. In instances where a mother has given birth by cesarean section, the baby is often sent to an incubator before a mother can hold or see her baby. Today, nearly one in three U.S. women now gives birth via C-section, according to the CDC. That equals more than one million moms annually who are denied the benefits of skin-on-skin contact with their newborn. Fortunately, many hospitals now offer a solution in the form of a “family-centered birth experience.” Also known as a “gentle cesarean,” a family-centered birth experience includes certain aspects of a natural childbirth during a C-section operation, including allowing moms to watch the delivery, (but not the C-section procedure) as well as hold their babies immediately after delivery.

Traditionally, C-section deliveries are blocked off by an opaque screen. New options such as a family viewing C-section drape allow moms to witness their babies’ first breath through a see-through window, while still maintaining an essential surgical barrier. If you’re planning to have a C-section and want to have a family-centered birth experience, do your research to find a hospital that offers the service and can deliver it the way you want. Ensuring skin-on-skin time with the baby will require additional staff and rearranging of equipment in the delivery room, as well as altered placement of the EKG leads on your body. Discuss these details with your doctor beforehand to ensure the hospital can make the necessary arrangements. Opting for a family-centered birth experience will require some additional upfront planning during pregnancy, but the bond created between mother and child will be a lifelong memory for the family.

Mix chopped bacon and rice. 2. Add egg and breadcrumbs to rice and bacon mixture. Combine thoroughly. Wet hands to prevent sticking, and then form the egg-rice mixture into 4 thin patties. 3. Reheat the bacon fat in a skillet over medium heat. Add the rice cakes and cook, turning once until golden brown. About 4 minutes on

each side. St. Puppy’s Day Hash Ingredients 2 baking potatoes (1-1 ½ lbs.), peeled and shredded Sea salt 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces ½ cup shredded carrots ¾ cup chopped corned beef ½ cup of half-and-half ¼ cup grated cheese Ground pepper 4 large eggs, scrambled Directions 1. Place the potatoes in a colander, lightly salt and set aside. 2. Melt butter in the PupPot over medium heat. Mix in the potatoes, carrots, and corned beef. Increase the heat to medium-high. Cover pot. Stir every 5 minutes. Cook until potatoes are tender, about 15 minutes. 3. Stir in half-and-half and turn off hear. Season with pepper and cheese. 4. Top hash with the cooked eggs. Chicken Cakes Ingredients ½ cup cooked brown rice ¼ cup of peas, thawed 1/3 cup of rotisserie chicken, meat shredded 1 egg 2 Tbsp. plain breadcrumbs ½ tsp of dried parsley 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil Directions 1. In a medium bowl, stir together the rice, peas, chicken, egg, breadcrumbs and parsley. Form into 4 equally sized patties. 2. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken patties and cook, turning once, until golden-brown for approximately 7-8 minutes. Remove from the skillet and let cool slightly.

Santa Clara County CALIFORNIA The Registrar of Voters’ Office has begun mailing Sample Ballot and Voter Information Pamphlets o Santa Clara County voters for the November 3, 2015 Consolidated Election. Sample Ballot Pamphlets include information on a contest for a seat on the Board of the Orchard School District, a parcel tax measure for Union School District and a bond measure for the City of Los Altos. The sample ballot pamphlet is mailed to every registered voter beginning 40 days before each election. It contains important information that will help voters cast their ballots, including voting instructions, a sample of the ballot and information about local candidates. Mailing will continue through the week as the pamphlets are printed. Approximately 49,000 pamphlets will be produced this election to send to voters and to have available at polling places on Election Day. Pamphlets are printed in five dif-

Beginning with this election, the Registrar of Voters will include a postage-paid return envelope with every Vote by Mail ballot. Notably, Santa Clara is only the second county in the state to feature prepaid postage for Vote by Mail ballots. Registrar of Voters Shannon Bushey stated, “There is no more important action in a democracy than voting. The Registrar of Voters’ Office is passionate about increasing voter turnout and we hope that we will make it easier to vote by providing prepaid postage for all Vote by Mail ballots.” The sample ballot pamphlets include a Vote by Mail application that can be removed from the back cover. Voters can request a Vote by Mail ballot for this elec-

tion only, or they can sign up to be a Permanent Vote by Mail voter and automatically receive a mailed ballot in every election. the throat. What it’s saying is though it might pretend that the customer is king in the end it’s Uber über alles. Uber is essentially claiming it is merely an app that facilitates a service between a third party provider like a driver and the consumer. And that’s all it is. It’s a reflection of the society we live where we rely on apps who have become our middlemen. As long as it works without a hitch, it’s great. But as soon as the first problems arise, we understand the hard way what it means to be in a no-man’s land. At one level, Uber is not without logic. It is connecting a passenger with the closest available car which will come to the doorstep. It won’t argue about the destination, haggle about the fare, demand extra because “I will have to return empty”. That convenience will come at a

premium. Should an app be responsible for anything else? Should a MakeMyTrip be responsible if a flight is delayed or a carrier loses your luggage? Should an Olx vouch for everything being sold on its site and every transaction conducted on it? The difference is these sites are giving you a range of options. The final choice is yours. Uber is assigning a driver to you. It’s not like the passenger has much choice in that matter. The passenger, in fact, is delegating the act of screening and determining a suitable driver to Uber or thinks she is. Now we know better. It is absolutely true that there is only so much a background check will reveal. When an Uber-driver was

jailed in a Gurgaon rape case here in India, it turned out that he had been charged with an attempt to assault and rape in 2003 in Elau, for robbery and rape in Mehrauli in 2011, again for robbery and rape in Elau in 2013. All that along with some arson and illegal weapons. That such a person could become an Uber driver inspired very little confidence in the socalled “background checks” Uber was performing. A colleague whose driver joined Uber says she, as his latest employer, never ever got a call from Uber to check his background. Then came the molestation case where an Uber driver was accused of trying to kiss a passenger in Gurgaon. Another Uber driver was arrested in Kolkata for allegedly masturbating with one hand and driving with another. Cases like that exposed the limits of background checks.

These drivers, for example, had valid badges and licences. There’s no background check that will reveal if one night a driver’s hormones will get the better of him and he thinks he can grope or kiss his passenger. There’s only so much that is in Uber’s control. Uber did try and react with alacrity to those cases rather than issue a “template response”. They stressed their “zero tolerance” policy and insisted “immediate action had been taken with the driver partner while the matter is being thoroughly investigated”. An Uber spokesman told TIME that in the Kolkata case the company immediately contacted the passenger, suspended the driver and helped local authorities with their investigation.

Arturo Hilario EL OBSERVADOR Matthew Nieto (#83) was born and raised in sunny California, but always wanted the cold ice of a hockey rink. “I lived in Connecticut when I was 14 and Michigan a few years before that, so I was used to cold weathers, didn’t mean I liked them.” One of the few California born professional hockey players in the National Hockey League, the 22 year-old Nieto grew up in Long Beach, CA to an environment that preferred soccer over hockey. His initial foray into the sport was his grandfather buying him a toy hockey stick as a child. “I grew up in Southern California where Hockey (was) not big. My grandpa just kind of randomly got me a plastic stick and I used to play for hours, that’s when “The Mighty Ducks” movies were popular so I was really into it. My parents signed me up for roller hockey, I made the transition to ice when I was 6, and fell in love with it.” Looking back, those times where he watched and mimicked the local Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings, along with hockey movies, would come to define his life. Growing up in a Hispanic neighborhood, the MexicanAmerican Nieto sometimes felt at odds with his immediate sports environment, where his passion was on the ice instead of the soccer field. “You know they all thought it was funky that I was playing hockey instead of soccer, but when you love something you stick to it and you give it your all.”

Yet there were people he looked up to in the NHL that reflected his heritage. Scott Gomez, another MexicanAmerican player (who also played one season with the Sharks), has been playing professionally since 1999. “There aren’t that many Hispanics that are in the sport, there’s more and more now than when I was growing up, (but) I always looked up to Gomez. He kind of opened the door there.” Simply put, Nieto says, “it was something I wanted since I was a kid.” Nieto’s determination pushed him into moving far away from the Sun of SoCal to Salisbury School, a prep school in Salisbury, Connecticut to pursue hockey. This decision was fueled by his desire and commitment, but did come at a cost. “My parents never made that much money but we weren’t poor either so they worked to get me to this point today. Just so many sacrifices, and I had to move away when I was 14 years old, that wasn’t easy for me or my family.” Although looking back he says “it’s a pretty crazy road but it’s nice to know it paid off and I’m in a position where I can take care of them.” Continually evolving his skills as a speedy left wing forward, he then attended Boston University on a full scholarship. Of his experience there he says, “it was awesome. The best years of my life. Living out there going to school, we had good fans, a great city. It was just a really great place to play.” The San Jose Sharks selected Nieto in the second round, 47th overall, of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He officially started with the team in 2013. Since then he describes his two years with the Sharks as full of bonding and personal growth.

“Its been awesome, it’s a little bit different than Southern California but I say it’s nice because it’s close enough for friends and family to come out and its also far enough away that I kind of have my space. It’s a good position and I love it here. The guys here are awesome, we’re a tight-knit group.” In his spare time here in the Bay Area Nieto likes to visit San Francisco as well as relax at home, occasionally making music on his laptop and playing Playstation. Game of choice? “Call of duty, I log in my hours for sure.” Some of the highlights of his professional career are ones that have been in his dreams since he was a child. “I think a high point was playing my first game and that was a special moment.” His first NHL goal was in San Jose on October 8th, 2013 against New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. “I had family in the building which was nice, that’s the moment you always dream of as a kid, scoring in an NHL building and hearing the fans cheer.” Finally, if he was to give any form of advice to young athletes who dream about playing professionally, its simple. “That’s when the sacrifices come in when you have to drive far to play or practice or train. It’s all about sacrifice and dedicating yourself to getting to that next level. When I was a kid I was at the rink for hours a day. The Cookoff will be officially sanctioned by the International Chili Society, the leading chili sanctioning organization. One winning recipe will earn an automatic qualification in the world championships next year. (This year’s ICS 2015 World Championship takes place in Reno, with a $25,000 grand prize up for grabs) The Flea Market will grant a trophy and top prize of $500 for the red chili winner. Other categories with prize money include chili verde, salsa, “people’s choice,” and best decorated booth.” The Little Explorers petting zoo, Mechanical Bull Ride, and USA Walking on Water ride, and live music from California Cowboys and Long Train Running, a Doobie Brother’s tribute band, will round out the Cookoff. Although the entertainment and Cookoff is free, a $10 sampling kit may be purchased, which will allow guests to try out all of these delicious chilis. Cookoff proceeds will benefit the Weingarten Children’s Center in Redwood City, which assists children with hearing loss and speech impediments to “reach their full potential and succeed in their educational journey.” Rich Alvari, the Marketing Director of the Berryessa Flea Market is the architect behind the Cookoff, and having great experiences at other chili events prompted the idea to bring it to community of San Jose. While watching and tasting the crafts of other chili-chefs at these Cookoffs he noted “these are serious chefs. They

are really, really good at this. I always notice a lot of families working together. Many of these are couples working together, and they make delicious chili, and have a ball competing.” The Cookoff will draw both experienced chili chefs, as well as local cooks who have their own favorite recipes they want people to taste. The Red and Green Chilis, and Salsa will be carefully judged by the Contest judges who will be evaluating flavor, spices, textures and overall experience. Guests purchasing the sampling kits will vote for their favorite chilis, and will decide 1st through 5th place in the People’s Choice Category… and most importantly, they get to try them all out! Alvari says he hopes that this event not only attracts the chili connoisseurs that frequent these events, but also local residents and flea market guests who feel they have a great family chili recipe that can wow the judges. “I wanted to make sure that this Cookoff was sanctioned so that we have the ability to draw some of the very best chefs. But I also wanted this Cookoff to be appealing to the locals who believe they can cook a little bit, and enter, absolutely.” Jessica Chang Greenman, Alumni Parent and current Development Coordinator at The Weingarten Children’s Center say this opportunity to collaborate with the Cookoff was ecstatic at not only benefiting from some of the proceeds, but of being able to come out to the Cookoff and advocate. “We jumped right on board and thought it was fabulous. We always love going out and talking to people.” Flea Market owner Brian Bumb and his wife were looking for a non-profit to support and benefit from the chili Cookoff; being supporters of the Weingarten Children’s

Center it was natural to ask Greenman to collaborate. “We feel so fortunate to be chosen. They’ve been so gracious in helping us and really bringing us in,” she says. The Weingarten Center for Children started 48 years ago, with the goal of bringing alternative approaches to helping children with hearing and speech limitations and their families. Not only is Greenman an advocate for these children and the nonprofit, but her own daughter benefitted of the services a few short years ago. Greenman is looking forward to the chili and fun activities. Alvari adds, “at the end of the day, this will be a very cool day to be at the flea market. Anyone who has been to a food event, anywhere, (knows) they’re all always fun… and of course the food will be delicious.” The Berryessa Flea Market Inaugural Chili Cookoff will take place on Saturday October 10th, 11 am to 5 pm. Admission to the Cookoff is free, tasting is $10 and Parking is $7.
