The CHC also monitors Executive and Judicial issues.. “What is a Chicano? is a query posed to Fernando Zazueta, Esq., who replied, “Easy for me: I was born in Mexico and am a Naturalized USA citizen, so I can be Mexican, Mexican-American, Chicano, Latino, Raza, even Hispanic. Mexico declared its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18. The term ‘Hispanic’ or ‘Latino’, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, refers to Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. The 2010 Census determined that 50.5 million people or 16% of the population are of Hispanic or Latino origin. R.J. Martinez, Ph.D., reminds all that “Chicano” is related to the 1960-70’s era when ‘WE’ chose to call ourselves “Chicanos”, who wanted to define their community and culture. Accordingly, Hispanics as a term includes the Iberian peninsula Spaniards; the term ‘Latino’ includes all those in North, Central and South America whose history could be traced back to Spain, but whose indigenous blood lines were ‘American’. The most significant issue for each ‘Hispanic’ to understand and practice is that Latinos are Americans. We need to always think of ourselves as ‘Americans’ first and foremost.

What many do not know, is that Dr. Castro’s basic research as an IBM employee resulted in the development of a plastic material containing iron which would retain information (data bases) placed thereon electronically. It was this technology which permitted IBM to become the foremost manufacturer of many types of electronic memory devices.
A local Cuban-American, Reynaldo Gil, holds several patents which were instrumental in the creation of ‘cloud computing’. No one can use this technology without taking advantage of the electronic technology insights of Reynaldo Gil.

BPT Virtual reality headsets, super sophisticated smartphones and 4K TVs with images as sharp as the view through a clean window — technology just keeps getting more amazing. Don’t forget, however, that behind all that awesome technology are the people who are innovating and producing it. The tech industry is no longer comprised of a handful of introverts and math whizzes, it’s now made up of millions of dreamers who believe in a small idea’s potential to achieve global impact. But while more students are taking an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and pursuing tech careers, the diversity of the technology workforce lags behind the industry’s pace of innovation. Although women have made great strides in other industries, they are still poorly represented in STEM careers, including tech. In fact, in 2013 women ages 25 to 34 were 21 percent more likely than men to be college graduates and 48 percent more likely to have gone to graduate school, according to a report by the

presidential Council of Economic Advisors. Yet women account for only a quarter of the tech industry workforce. “To cultivate and sustain diverse perspectives and expand the pipeline of IT talent, women must feel welcome in the industry, whether they’re writing code or leading the next IT startup in Silicon Valley,” says Charity Jennings, program dean for the University of Phoenix’s College of Information Systems and Technology. “Cultivating an interest in tech fields needs to start at a young age. It’s critical to get our young women engaged and excited about becoming future engineers, web develops, tech entrepreneurs and executives.” “A recent study by the non-
profit organization Code. org found that nine out of 10 high schools in the U.S. don’t offer computer science classes, and that’s profoundly troubling,” says Jennings. “Moreover, the same study found that half of all U.S. states don’t count computer science toward high school graduation math or science requirements. How can we expect to produce the next generation of technology leaders, let alone encourage females to pursue careers in tech, if kids don’t get the opportunity in school to take computer science courses?” Working together, says Jennings, educators, corporations, policy makers, community leaders and parents can help nurture young women’s interest in tech careers.
For their own peace of mind, many parents like to learn about school security protocols.
NAPSI If any of the estimated 55 million American schoolchildren is one you care about, you may be glad to learn about plans in place to keep them safe. Today’s school leaders face unprecedented safety and security challenges, whether from unwelcome intruders or natural disasters. Such risks make it essential for schools to stay current on the latest advances in construction, technological tools and safety protocols. Three Steps To Better Secure Your School Now Many parents ask about school security measures to make sure classrooms are safe. “Parents who are actively involved in their student’s school security can improve their child’s safety and success on campus,” explained Patrick V. Fiel, Sr., head of PF Security Consulting LLC, who served as the former Executive Director of Security for Washington D.C. Public Schools and has extensive experience upgrading schools to meet today’s security standards. Following are three practices every school should and
can do—regardless of available budget: 1. Plan and Prepare. Even the highest security technology is ineffective without proper training and preparation. Actions should be clearly defined, documented and practiced regularly. Staff and students should know exactly what to do and where to go in the case of emergency. For example, in case of a lockdown: •Lock down campus building and residence hall entries. • Stay in the classroom or move to a safe area immediately. • Quickly glance outside the room to direct any students or staff members in the hall into your room immediately. • Lock your door. •Lower or close any blinds. •Place students against a wall where an intruder cannot see them if looking through a door sidelight. •Turn out lights and computer monitors. •Keep students and phones quiet. Schools with open campuses have other challenges. Although a campuswide lockdown may not always be practical or even possible, individual buildings and classrooms can be secured. 2. Stay Focused on Proven and Reliable Practices. “Un-
tested technologies such as makeshift door barrier tactics can block first responders from entering the classroom,” said Fiel. “Having easy access to enter and exit the classroom will help to safely and efficiently save the lives of students and provide care to those who need immediate attention.” 3. Develop a Lockdown Strategy. Allegion, known for pioneering safety and security solutions for schools and universities, has security consultants who suggest having tools in place to manage comings and goings at each doorway so it can lock down on demand immediately. Three proven lockdown technologies are: • Manual lockdown—uses keys and classroom security functions to lock down a space. This is an economical option but relies on an individual having the right key at the right place. • Remote lockdown—enables classroom lockdown by remote fob within proximity of a door. It can be a cost-effective alternative to a networked system. • Centralized lockdown— this networked system, when integrated with access control software, can enable immediate school or campuswide lockdown.

NEWSUSA For decades, Angola’s government has focused on its natural resources as its number one commodity. Now, however, there is a paradigm shift that may have an even greater potential -- the country’s young people. In cooperation with Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), a leading Swiss business school
that has recently earned the AACSB International business accreditation, Angola wants to train select students in international business and start a new phase of economic development. But can the formation of a new financial elite be enough for lasting change in a country that is still inherently poor?
Of course not, says Jose Filament Dos Santos, a representative from the Angolan sovereign wealth fund Fundo Soberano de Angola (FSDEA), which is funding the project. “But we firmly believe that you have to start somewhere, and it’s best to get going in an area where it will have a big impact.” Other countries have already seen the benefit of
On average, over 533,000 new businesses were started each month in 2014. Clearly, the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well, but many Americans are still hesitant to become their own boss. While there are many avenues Americans can take to pursue passions and gain control of their career, one often overlooked possibility is being an independent sales agent.
According to Aflac, the leading provider of voluntary insurance at the work site with more than 74,000 independent sales agents in the U.S., here are some things to look for as you conduct your job search: 1. Financially strong companies and industry leaders: Just as a house needs a strong foundation, it is helpful to build a career with a strong,

investing in education and a younger generation, but it is no small step for a country whose majority still live in abject poverty. The focus-shift of the FSDEA, from the investment in real estate to the social sector, justifies Dos Santos with the growing investment interest for years from foreign companies: “In order to understand and draw up major contracts in international business that will bring in longterm revenues not only for investors, but also for the country and its people, Angola needs experts.”

Independent sales agents have the benefit of being able to work autonomously while still being a part of an established organization. Not to mention, these positions usually offer growth potential for income and career advancement. Though there are benefits to this type of work, it is still important for those considering this path to do their own due diligence to ensure that they find the right organization to support.

For its part, the university said it sees the course as a chance for students to contribute to an improvement in its citizens’ lives.
While proponents understand the program and the selection of students according to “purely objective criteria” will have its challenges, ultimately it could move the country forward in ways it never thought possible -- until now.

stable organization. Working for a company that offers positive brand recognition and trust provides credibility that could otherwise take a lot of time to develop. 2. Hands-on training and mentorship opportunities: Having the right support and resources is essential for success. When companies offer training and mentorship programs, it means they are invested in their employees. 3. Recognition awards and bonus programs: There is nothing better than working for a company that celebrates individual achievements. Recognition and bonus programs are two ways to know that hard work will be appreciated and contribute to career advancement.
4. Future market potential: Selling a product or service people want and need is a must for career advancement, but so is the future market potential. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the job outlook for Insurance Sales Agents is growing at a 10-percent rate from 20122022. A market that is growing, or has growth potential, can help ensure your lasting success. With these tips in mind, entrepreneurial job seekers should be on their way to having the freedom to balance work and personal life and set individual goals. For an independent sales agent, there is virtually no limit to what can be achieved.

Health Day, a federal observance started nearly 90 years ago to encourage Americans
to focus on the health and well-being of children of all ages. That includes helping
expecting mothers plan for a healthy arrival of their soonto-be little ones. If you’re an expectant mother, you’re likely already making your child’s health a priority by scheduling regular visits with your obstetrician, adjusting your diet and limiting certain activities during your pregnancy. But have you thought about important considerations for delivery day? For example, skin-to-skin contact with your newborn immediately after delivery can help your baby get off to a healthy start. The International Breastfeeding Centre lists numerous benefits of skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby after delivery. These benefits include a happier baby with a more elevated blood sugar level, a more stable temperature, heart rate and breathing rate. The benefits are not fleeting, however. Mothers who have skin-to-skin contact with their babies are more likely to breastfeed in the first one to four months, and tend to breastfeed longer, according to a report from
OCTOBER 2-8, 2015
the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group, analyzing 34 studies of more than 2,000 mothers and their babies. Traditionally, skin-to-skin time has been limited to natural vaginal births. In instances where a mother has given birth by cesarean section, the baby is often sent to an incubator before a mother can hold or see her baby. Today, nearly one in three U.S. women now gives birth via C-section, according to the CDC. That equals more than one million moms annually who are denied the benefits of skin-on-skin contact with their newborn. Fortunately, many hospitals now offer a solution in the form of a “family-centered birth experience.” Also known as a “gentle cesarean,” a family-centered birth experience includes certain aspects of a natural childbirth during a C-section operation, including allowing moms to watch the delivery, (but not the C-section procedure) as well as hold their babies immediately after delivery.
Traditionally, C-section deliveries are blocked off by an opaque screen. New options such as a family viewing C-section drape allow moms to witness their babies’ first breath through a see-through window, while still maintaining an essential surgical barrier. If you’re planning to have a C-section and want to have a family-centered birth experience, do your research to find a hospital that offers the service and can deliver it the way you want. Ensuring skin-on-skin time with the baby will require additional staff and rearranging of equipment in the delivery room, as well as altered placement of the EKG leads on your body. Discuss these details with your doctor beforehand to ensure the hospital can make the necessary arrangements. Opting for a family-centered birth experience will require some additional upfront planning during pregnancy, but the bond created between mother and child will be a lifelong memory for the family.

STATEPOINT Trick-or-treating may be the standard Halloween tradition for most American families, but the holiday has branched out extensively over the last decade. Today, Americans spend over one billion dollars visiting Halloween-themed attractions. Where are they going, and what are the best activities for your family? The experts at Hauntworld.com are offering some spooky answers in this ultimate fall to-do list.
Homemade Meals Provide A Special Treat For Pets, Says Host Of Doggy Cooking Network Dinnertime for many dogs involves the owner ripping open a bag, pouring kibbles into a bowl and walking away. Not the stuff of a meaningful relationship.Kris Rotonda likes to take an occasional break from that routine and give his four dogs – Rocky, Coco, Kobe and Jordan – a special treat. Dr. Jena Questen, a holistic veterinarian, says taking that extra time for preparing those meals can be worthwhile. The benefits of feeding a dog homemade dog food include reducing the risk of skin allergies, boosting their immune system, improving their digestive system, as well as giving them renewed energy. “It’s no different from humans,” Questen says. “We couldn’t eat the same processed food every day and maintain optimum health, and neither can our pets.” Rotonda shares a few recipes for giving your canine pals the “Royal ‘Treat’ Ment” as well: Bacon Rice Cakes Ingredients 1 cup brown rice, cooked 2 slices lean bacon, cooked, finely chopped (Retain bacon fat) 1 large egg ½ cup dried bread crumbs Directions 1. Mix chopped bacon and rice. 2. Add egg and breadcrumbs to rice and bacon mixture. Combine thoroughly. Wet hands to prevent sticking, and then form the egg-rice mixture into 4 thin patties. 3. Cover pot. Stir every 5 minutes. Cook until potatoes are tender, about 15 minutes. 3. Stir in half-and-half and turn off hear. Season with pepper and cheese. 4. Top hash with the cooked eggs. Chicken Cakes Ingredients ½ cup cooked brown rice ¼ cup of peas, thawed 1/3 cup of rotisserie chicken, meat shredded 1 egg 2 Tbsp. plain breadcrumbs ½ tsp of dried parsley 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil Directions 1. In a medium bowl, stir together the rice, peas, chicken, egg, breadcrumbs and parsley. Form into 4 equally sized patties. 2. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken patties and cook, turning once, until golden-brown for approximately 7-8 minutes. Remove from the skillet and let cool slightly.
Farm Fun Many farms offer tons of fall activities ideal for families with young children, including picking the perfect carving pumpkin, finding your way out of a corn maze and drinking homemade apple cider. Other fun activities include pony rides, hay mazes, non-spooky hayrides, petting zoos and even shooting pumpkin cannons. Ghost Tours Ghost hunting television shows have really increased the popularity in finding haunts and eerie tours. Learn more about your local area’s spooky history by taking family or out of town guests to haunted mansions, cemeteries, prisons and more.

Zombie Runs What could be scarier than a 5K run? One with zombies of course! Zombie runs are a good time for the whole family, providing a fun reason to get kids and teens moving, using obstacle courses, contests, prizes and more as incentives.
Home Haunts Americans are now decorating their yards and homes into spooky graveyards with high tech lights, animations and more. Some homeowners take it further by also decorating their home’s interiors and creating mazes in the garage or backyard. Finding a spooky home haunt or neighborhood near you can be a great Halloween activity to do if you’re on a budget.
Haunted Hayrides Hayrides can be as sophisticated as a Hollywood movie, complete with fog machines and lights. Some have even adopted new twists. For example,
Escape Rooms Escape rooms offer an immersive and interactive experience like none other. These Halloweenthemed attractions involve working together to
solve puzzles and riddles in order to escape a room in under an hour. Haunted Houses Haunted houses come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from three-dimensional black light attractions to haunted trails to major scream parks. Haunted houses also change regularly, so it may be very different from visit to visit. Today, most haunted attractions don’t rely as much on blood and guts as they do on interactive special effects, sophisticated costumes, story lines and computer-generated imagery. To celebrate the scary side of Halloween, get the family together for an unforgettable night filled with fun and screams. While tradition never gets old, novel Halloween activities provide different thrills than a standard trick-or-treat trip around the block.

Suzanne Potter CALIFORNIA NEWS SERVICE SAN DIEGO - A quick search for web developer jobs in California turns up 10,000 positions, open, right now. But many young people don’t have the skills to write code, and can’t afford college or $10,000 for a coding boot camp. Consequently, many companies are sending the jobs overseas. But a unique non-profit called SoftStack Factory is

outside of San Diego in other places in California or other places around the country,” he says.
SoftStack Factory CEO Harold Gottschalk says the program harnesses the talents of low-income students and gives companies trained local workers, helping keep jobs on American soil.
SoftStack is looking for businesses to sponsor the boot camps and in return the students will produce an app for the company.
The company is currently accepting applications for the next boot camp in January. You don’t have to know anything about coding - but you need to be a high school graduate. Women are encouraged to apply.
“It’s a great opportunity, they’re gonna get really exposed to some really cool technology, they’ll learn how to build hybrid mobile apps,”
Gottschalk would like to train up to 200 students a year and offer the course in multiple locations. “Eventually, we’d like to see if we can replicate that model

Santa Clara County CALIFORNIA The Registrar of Voters’ Office has begun mailing Sample Ballot and Voter Information Pamphlets o Santa Clara County voters for the November 3, 2015 Consolidated Election. Sample Ballot Pamphlets include information on a contest for a seat on the Board of the Orchard School District, a parcel tax measure for Union School District and a bond measure for the City of Los Altos. The sample ballot pamphlet is mailed to every registered voter beginning 40 days before each election. It contains important information that will help voters cast their ballots, including voting instructions, a sample of the ballot and information about local candidates. Mailing will continue through the week as the pamphlets are printed. Approximately 49,000 pamphlets will be produced this election to send to voters and to have available at polling places on Election Day. Pamphlets are printed in five dif-

ferent languages required by federal and state law: English, Chinese, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Beginning with this election, the Registrar of Voters will include a postage-paid return envelope with every Vote by Mail ballot. In previous elections, voters had to pay the cost of return postage, which frequently exceeded a single first-class stamp. Notably, Santa Clara is only the second county in the state to feature prepaid postage for Vote by Mail ballots. Registrar of Voters Shannon Bushey stated, “There is no more important action in a democracy than voting. The Registrar of Voters’ Office is passionate about increasing voter turnout and we hope that we will make it easier to vote by providing prepaid postage for all Vote by Mail ballots.” The sample ballot pamphlets include a Vote by Mail application that can be removed from the back cover. Voters can request a Vote by Mail ballot for this elec-
tion only, or they can sign up to be a Permanent Vote by Mail voter and automatically receive a mailed ballot in every election. Vote by Mail applications can also be found online at Vote by Mail Application. Vote by Mail ballots for this election will be mailed beginning on Monday, October 5. Voters are encouraged to review the pamphlets carefully, whether they vote by mail or at the polls. Marking their choice on the sample ballot first and then using it as a guide to complete the official ballot will help voters avoid making mistakes. The pamphlet includes candidate and measure statements, which can help voters make an informed decision. Voters who go to the polls are encouraged to take their sample ballot pamphlets with them to help speed up the process on Election Day. Each voter’s assigned polling place location is printed on the back cover of the pamphlet. The last day to register to vote in the election is Monday, October 19 and can be done online at Register to
Vote. Voters who want to check their registration status may do so on the website at Check Your Registration Status. A voter should complete a new registration form if he or she has moved, changed a name(s), or would like to change his or her political party preference. To register to vote in Santa Clara County, a voter must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on or before Election Day, a Santa Clara County resident and not imprisoned or on parole
for a felony. Online registrations will be accepted as long as they are completed before midnight on October 19, paper registration forms that are postmarked prior to or on October 19 will also be accepted. Paper registration forms are available at post offices, public libraries, fire stations, city halls and most local government offices. Additionally, voters who want to find out if they live within the Orchard School District, the Union School District or the City of Los
Altos can use the convenient online tool Look Up Your Districts. Orchard School District consists of 4,293 registered voters. Union School District consists of 21,952 registered voters and the City of Los Altos consists of 17,734 registered voters. For more information, contact the Registrar of Voters’ Office at 1-408-299-VOTE (8683) or toll-free at 1-866430-VOTE (8683), or visit www.sccvote.org.

use his powers under the Antiquities Act to declare Mojave Trails a national monument. Earlier this year, Sen.
Sandip Roy NEW AMERICA MEDIA Somewhere along the way Uber has done a U-turn. And it does not augur well for the passenger. Mid-day reports that in a 10 September update of its terms and conditions, Uber has issued, what is in effect, a statutory warning to anyone using the service. “Uber does not guarantee the quality, suitability, safety or ability of third party providers. You agree that the entire risk arising out of your use of the services, and any service or good requested in connection therewith, remains solely with you.” This might just be legalese to protect Uber and it does not mean the company will not endeavour to provide the best service it can, but the language still sticks in

the throat. What it’s saying is though it might pretend that the customer is king in the end it’s Uber über alles. Uber is essentially claiming it is merely an app that facilitates a service between a third party provider like a driver and the consumer. And that’s all it is. It’s a reflection of the society we live where we rely on apps who have become our middlemen. As long as it works without a hitch, it’s great. But as soon as the first problems arise, we understand the hard way what it means to be in a no-man’s land. At one level, Uber is not without logic. It is connecting a passenger with the closest available car which will come to the doorstep. It won’t argue about the destination, haggle about the fare, demand extra because “I will have to return empty”. That convenience will come at a
premium. Should an app be responsible for anything else? Should a MakeMyTrip be responsible if a flight is delayed or a carrier loses your luggage? Should an Olx vouch for everything being sold on its site and every transaction conducted on it? The difference is these sites are giving you a range of options. The final choice is yours. Uber is assigning a driver to you. It’s not like the passenger has much choice in that matter. The passenger, in fact, is delegating the act of screening and determining a suitable driver to Uber or thinks she is. Now we know better. It is absolutely true that there is only so much a background check will reveal. When an Uber-driver was
jailed in a Gurgaon rape case here in India, it turned out that he had been charged with an attempt to assault and rape in 2003 in Elau, for robbery and rape in Mehrauli in 2011, again for robbery and rape in Elau in 2013. All that along with some arson and illegal weapons. That such a person could become an Uber driver inspired very little confidence in the socalled “background checks” Uber was performing. A colleague whose driver joined Uber says she, as his latest employer, never ever got a call from Uber to check his background. Then came the molestation case where an Uber driver was accused of trying to kiss a passenger in Gurgaon. Another Uber driver was arrested in Kolkata for allegedly masturbating with one hand and driving with another. Cases like that exposed the limits of background checks.

These drivers, for example, had valid badges and licences. There’s no background check that will reveal if one night a driver’s hormones will get the better of him and he thinks he can grope or kiss his passenger. There’s only so much that is in Uber’s control. Uber did try and react with alacrity to those cases rather than issue a “template response”. They stressed their “zero tolerance” policy and insisted “immediate action had been taken with the driver partner while the matter is being thoroughly investigated”. An Uber spokesman told TIME that in the Kolkata case the company immediately contacted the passenger, suspended the driver and helped local authorities with their investigation.
loopholes and ensure passenger safety. On the other hand, in its legal small print it’s doing its best to not be held responsible for anything at all if push comes to shove. Attention to safety should be part of the company’s DNA, not a perk it offers its customers when convenient.
Thus on one hand, Uber wants to create a public image of a responsible and responsive company that is trying its level best to plug all the

As per its revamped terms and conditions, if Uber really means what it says, it might as well now have a pop-up warning every time you confirm your Uber pick-up. “Please enter this car at your own risk. We are not responsible for anything that happens on your ride. Thank you for using Uber. Hope you have a pleasant journey but don’t hold us to it.”

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, Donald Glover, Mackenzie Davis, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. We’ve all had the feeling of being alone in the world. Only Mark Watney knows the feeling of being alone on Mars. Presumed killed by a devastating windstorm that forced an emergency evacuation, Watney awakens, injured, and to stay alive he must react immediately. If he can maintain his resolve to not become Mars’ first human casualty, help is only a few years and a few million miles away. “This is the ultimate survival story,” says director Ridley Scott. “Mark Watney is placed under unimaginable duress and isolation, and the movie is about how he responds. Mark’s fate will be determined by whether he succumbs to panic and despair and accepts death as inevitable – or chooses to rely

on his training, resourcefulness and sense of humor to stay calm and solve problems. “Watney’s humor becomes a coping device, enabling him to stave off hopelessness and keep his mind from fixating on the dire circumstances. His penchant to remain upbeat and optimistic is vital to the story, and one of the character traits that attracted Matt Damon to the role. “I loved the humor, not only from Watney, but from other characters as well,” says Damon. “The comedic tone is never glib and it complements the intense drama of the situation, which is not often something associated with the scifi genre.” The screenplay is based on an original novel by computer programmer-turnedwriter Andy Weir. Aditya Sood was the first producer to read Weir’s eBook, prior to its 2014 hardcover publication by Random House, when it existed only online in series form and then as a eBook on Amazon. Says Damon: “Watney is a botanist and mechanical engineer, and is sent on the Mars mission to study and take samples of the soil, hopefully to learn more about its composition and the feasibility of growing crops. He has the knowledge and training to find ways to survive, but time is working against him. He believes it will likely be three to four years before the possibility of rescue. In man versus nature scenarios, the smart money is usually on nature.” The most important battle Watney must fight is with his own will. Despair would be as detrimental as the hostile Martian environment. He keeps a video log of his activities, suspecting it may likely serve as his final testament, injecting it with scientific methodology and a fair dose of wit.

VIDEO PREMIERES ON STEREOGUM, ALBUM ‘UNTITLED (FIVE TEARS)’ OUT OCTOBER 30 “BABES IS VELVET UNDERGROUND MEETS THE RONETTES IN A LYNCH FILM.” —GORILLA VS BEAR Babes’ “Life Come Into Me” video has premiered on Stereogum. It is available to watch on YouTube. “The men appear to be auditioning for something in front of unamused singer Sarah Rayne Leigh, whose inner monologue corresponds with the song’s melancholy ‘life is pointless’ lyrical theme,” says Stereogum. “Under this ruckus lies the band’s oozingly slow synth and Leigh’s timeless voice.” The track is off the bedroom-rock family five-piece’s forthcoming full-length debut Untitled (Five Tears), out October 30 on Barsuk Records. Noisey recently premiered the first pre-release track “I’ve Got a Reason to Keep on Living,” saying it “crests a sunny surf-pop wave…there’s an element of
obsession lurking in these beachy grooves.” Listen via Soundcloud HERE. The band, siblings Aaron, Zach, and Sarah Rayne Leigh, along with cousins Jeffrey Baird and Bryan Harris, have all been playing music together since they were children and recorded the new LP on a mobile rig in various places around Los Angeles. “I just don’t want to cry so much anymore,” says the band of the writing process and theme behind the new album. “Lots of horrible things happen to us all—friends and lovers move on or drop dead, everything changes right under our feet, and just when you start to understand something, you realize that you have no clue and it slips away. But all this pain and conflict allows us to come back with a bigger heart, with the ability to laugh in the face of any demon, to expose yourself, literally and metaphorically, to

Arturo Hilario EL OBSERVADOR Matthew Nieto (#83) was born and raised in sunny California, but always wanted the cold ice of a hockey rink. “I lived in Connecticut when I was 14 and Michigan a few years before that, so I was used to cold weathers, didn’t mean I liked them.” One of the few California born professional hockey players in the National Hockey League, the 22 year-old Nieto grew up in Long Beach, CA to an environment that preferred soccer over hockey. His initial foray into the sport was his grandfather buying him a toy hockey stick as a child. “I grew up in Southern California where Hockey (was) not big. My grandpa just kind of randomly got me a plastic stick and I used to play for hours, that’s when “The Mighty Ducks” movies were popular so I was really into it. My parents signed me up for roller hockey, I made the transition to ice when I was 6, and fell in love with it.” Looking back, those times where he watched and mimicked the local Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings, along with hockey movies, would come to define his life. Growing up in a Hispanic neighborhood, the MexicanAmerican Nieto sometimes felt at odds with his immediate sports environment, where his passion was on the ice instead of the soccer field. “You know they all thought it was funky that I was playing hockey instead of soccer, but when you love something you stick to it and you give it your all.”
Yet there were people he looked up to in the NHL that reflected his heritage. Scott Gomez, another MexicanAmerican player (who also played one season with the Sharks), has been playing professionally since 1999. “There aren’t that many Hispanics that are in the sport, there’s more and more now than when I was growing up, (but) I always looked up to Gomez. He kind of opened the door there.” Simply put, Nieto says, “it was something I wanted since I was a kid.” Nieto’s determination pushed him into moving far away from the Sun of SoCal to Salisbury School, a prep school in Salisbury, Connecticut to pursue hockey. This decision was fueled by his desire and commitment, but did come at a cost. “My parents never made that much money but we weren’t poor either so they worked to get me to this point today. Just so many sacrifices, and I had to move away when I was 14 years old, that wasn’t easy for me or my family.” Although looking back he says “it’s a pretty crazy road but it’s nice to know it paid off and I’m in a position where I can take care of them.” Continually evolving his skills as a speedy left wing forward, he then attended Boston University on a full scholarship. Of his experience there he says, “it was awesome. The best years of my life. Living out there going to school, we had good fans, a great city. It was just a really great place to play.” The San Jose Sharks selected Nieto in the second round, 47th overall, of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He officially started with the team in 2013. Since then he describes his two years with the Sharks as full of bonding and personal growth.
“Its been awesome, it’s a little bit different than Southern California but I say it’s nice because it’s close enough for friends and family to come out and its also far enough away that I kind of have my space. It’s a good position and I love it here. The guys here are awesome, we’re a tight-knit group.” In his spare time here in the Bay Area Nieto likes to visit San Francisco as well as relax at home, occasionally making music on his laptop and playing Playstation. Game of choice? “Call of duty, I log in my hours for sure.” Some of the highlights of his professional career are ones that have been in his dreams since he was a child. “I think a high point was playing my first game and that was a special moment.” His first NHL goal was in San Jose on October 8th, 2013 against New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. “I had family in the building which was nice, that’s the moment you always dream of as a kid, scoring in an NHL building and hearing the fans cheer.” Finally, if he was to give any form of advice to young athletes who dream about playing professionally, its simple. “That’s when the sacrifices come in when you have to drive far to play or practice or train. It’s all about sacrifice and dedicating yourself to getting to that next level. When I was a kid I was at the rink for hours a day. And it all pays off, whatever you put into something that’s what you get out of it.” Matthew Nieto and the rest of the “Tiburones” return for the season opener against the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday October 7th, 2015.

Arturo Hilario EL OBSERVADOR Berryessa Flea Market is preparing for its first Chili Cookoff which will take place this upcoming October 10th, and the stakes are high. The Cookoff will be officially sanctioned by the International Chili Society, the leading chili sanctioning organization. One winning recipe will earn an automatic qualification in the world championships next year. (This year’s ICS 2015 World Championship takes place in Reno, with a $25,000 grand prize up for grabs) The Flea Market will grant a trophy and top prize of $500 for the red chili winner. Other categories with prize money include chili verde, salsa, “people’s choice,” and best decorated booth.” The Little Explorers petting zoo, Mechanical Bull Ride, and USA Walking on Water ride, and live music from California Cowboys and Long Train Running, a Doobie Brother’s tribute band, will round out the Cookoff. Although the entertainment and Cookoff is free, a $10 sampling kit may be purchased, which will allow guests to try out all of these delicious chilis. Cookoff proceeds will benefit the Weingarten Children’s Center in Redwood City, which assists children with hearing loss and speech impediments to “reach their full potential and succeed in their educational journey.” Rich Alvari, the Marketing Director of the Berryessa Flea Market is the architect behind the Cookoff, and having great experiences at other chili events prompted the idea to bring it to community of San Jose. While watching and tasting the crafts of other chili-chefs at these Cookoffs he noted “these are serious chefs. They

are really, really good at this. I always notice a lot of families working together. Many of these are couples working together, and they make delicious chili, and have a ball competing.” The Cookoff will draw both experienced chili chefs, as well as local cooks who have their own favorite recipes they want people to taste. The Red and Green Chilis, and Salsa will be carefully judged by the Contest judges who will be evaluating flavor, spices, textures and overall experience. Guests purchasing the sampling kits will vote for their favorite chilis, and will decide 1st through 5th place in the People’s Choice Category… and most importantly, they get to try them all out! Alvari says he hopes that this event not only attracts the chili connoisseurs that frequent these events, but also local residents and flea market guests who feel they have a great family chili recipe that can wow the judges. “I wanted to make sure that this Cookoff was sanctioned so that we have the ability to draw some of the very best chefs. But I also wanted this Cookoff to be appealing to the locals who believe they can cook a little bit, and enter, absolutely.” Jessica Chang Greenman, Alumni Parent and current Development Coordinator at The Weingarten Children’s Center say this opportunity to collaborate with the Cookoff was ecstatic at not only benefiting from some of the proceeds, but of being able to come out to the Cookoff and advocate. “We jumped right on board and thought it was fabulous. We always love going out and talking to people.” Flea Market owner Brian Bumb and his wife were looking for a non-profit to support and benefit from the chili Cookoff; being supporters of the Weingarten Children’s
Center it was natural to ask Greenman to collaborate. “We feel so fortunate to be chosen. They’ve been so gracious in helping us and really bringing us in,” she says. The Weingarten Center for Children started 48 years ago, with the goal of bringing alternative approaches to helping children with hearing and speech limitations and their families. Not only is Greenman an advocate for these children and the nonprofit, but her own daughter benefitted of the services a few short years ago. She continues to strive for the betterment of these children. “The daily therapy and continuous support that Weingarten has provided for not only me but for all the other parents.” The Weingarten Center will have a booth at the inaugural San Jose Flea Market Chili Cookoff and will happily be able to answer any questions about its programs. Greenman is looking forward to the chili and fun activities. Alvari adds, “at the end of the day, this will be a very cool day to be at the flea market. Anyone who has been to a food event, anywhere, (knows) they’re all always fun… and of course the food will be delicious.” The Berryessa Flea Market Inaugural Chili Cookoff will take place on Saturday October 10th, 11 am to 5 pm. Admission to the Cookoff is free, tasting is $10 and Parking is $7.
