COMMODORE’S REPORT Finally! Some reasonable weather is upon us and with the Sorrento Quays Fireworks Show just last week, summer has officially arrived. As usual the popular family fireworks night saw thousands of locals flood into the marina including hundreds of HYC members making the best use of our bars and restaurants and in some cases, such as myself, taking up great vantage points from their boats. If you didn’t get there this year make sure you don’t miss out in 2017 – it’s a great night. Leading into the warmer weather and more suitable boating conditions, some of our Power Boat members have been busy spending time on the river with a recent overnight stay in Fremantle. This weekend gone another bunch of boaties spent a day at Mindarie. I appeared to have incurred a penalty, imposed for a fender overboard. In saying that, the Kangaroo Court, which will technically enforce this, will see some serious counter claims against a few of the accompanying skippers. Point being – be in the bar when I ring the bell. I wont go down without a fight!

SAILING Our Sailors have been busy as well. Just off Trigg beach I caught a front stage view of our Keel section racing to an overnighter at the RPYC Fremantle annex. I understand Clem Rogers (highly respected HYC member and RPYC Annex Harbour Master) looked after our sailors upon their arrival ensuring they all enjoyed their stay. In addition, both our Cruising and Dinghy sailors have been busy in their own right with both sections now ready to enjoy the season ahead.

DIVE OLYMPICS The

very

2016

Dive

Olympics

was

overwhelmingly won by our HYC Divers. Congratulations to all our competitors. With the warmer water almost upon us, this is the time of the year the Diving section is swinging into action and from where I sit, are living the dream. In my opinion the biggest event on their calendar this coming year will be the Family Snorkeling Day, an event to be enjoyed by the entire club. This event, hopefully around the end of February, will see all members, their kids and grandchildren invited to spend a morning snorkeling at Little Island within the confines and safety of an environment coordinated and managed by experienced divers. Hopefully it will involve all sections of the club in its operation and be a true demonstration of our “cross pollination policy” of all sections.

ANGLING I note with interest the opportunity some members have been spending time out with our anglers, regardless of their section allegiance. This is of significance, given once the word is out, the fishers could be inundated with demand from members wanting to secure a position on one of the club boats. If you consider yourself a social member, take the time to look at this section - it has a lot to offer for the whole family.

NEW MEMBERS I take this opportunity to extend a very warm welcome to over 50 new members joining the club in the month of October during our “Come and Try” and “Discover Sailing” promotions. As it turned out, the national roll out of Discover Sailing day this year was brought forward and ended up working into our Come and Try month very well. As a result, we had significant numbers participate in the day and as a result, I am very proud to note that HYC is now considered as one of the most successful clubs in Australia in terms of patronage, volunteers and membership initiatives when it comes to this nationwide event. My sincere thanks go to all those volunteers (and there are over 50 of them), who assisted on the day, the staff who generously gave up their Sunday to help and all those guests who signed up as new members and now enjoy the benefits of this great club.

OPENING DAY SEASON Natalie and myself have been very busy over the last few months representing HYC for the “Opening Day” season at several Yacht Clubs. There is often more than one per week and whilst we absolutely love each and every one, not to mention the like minded people we meet, unfortunately we can’t get to every event. However, we are lucky to have the support of our club Flag Officers who attend on our behalf on occasions. The sharing of opening days is entrenched in the culture of Perth’s yacht clubs and an invaluable experience given the years of tradition based on the camaraderie forged by the interaction and familiarities of all clubs. In conversation with my fellow Commodores, it is quite comforting to know that our club is doing well in comparison to our kindred friends, in fact I honestly believe that our formula, structure and most importantly our culture is viewed by many as a success story. Given the economic times we live in we should be very proud of this achievement and recognition by our peers.

JAG THE JOKER A recent addition to our weekly club social offering has been “Jag the Joker”. Much to the disbelief of the attending members, I can assure you Danny has the Joker on the board and not in his office desk drawer as is rumored. Currently the jackpot is above $1,300 and I urge all members to join us on a Wednesday night 5-7pm for the fun and continue on for a meal up stairs or, during the festive season, for a buffet down stairs.

FINANCES On a financial note, I am delighted to report the five key operating centres within the club are trading well in a what can only be described as very challenging economic and social times. Your Executive and Management Committee,

charged with the financial task of managing this, are leaving no stone unturned in their endeavors to ensure our club is as successful as an enterprise as it is a club. However, the hurdles and repercussions ahead from our ever rising utility costs need to be addressed and in the near future I hope to be able share with you Club Management’s financial strategic plan forward.

FAMILY FOCUS The focus this year has been of delivering opportunities for activities both on and off the water. More so, activities that provide the opportunity for families to participate in events together. I guess that’s something a family orientated sailing and sea sports club should do. The introduction of Tackers (sailing’s equivalent to the AFL’s Auskick) earlier this year is gaining momentum, so much so that we required an additional six boats! Fortunately, a sponsorship deal will see these pint sized sailing dinghies arrive shortly and be ready for the summer holiday training program.

LOYALTY PROGRAM The Loyalty Program launched a number of months ago has proven to be highly successful with members already enjoying the benefits of the system. The redeemable vouchers have a sunset clause so make sure you use them. Please take the time to enjoy our bars and restaurants, the new menus, take in the views and most importantly engage yourself in the HYC experience.

One club – many sections – even more possibilities. Families enjoy Discover Sailing Day

OTHER RECIPROCAL AGREEMENTS Hillarys Yacht Club also has reciprocal agreements with many other Clubs within and outside of our wonderful country. Reciprocal agreements allow our members to visit, stay and use the facilities of fellow clubs including their clubhouse, food and beverage bars and restaurants and temporary marina berthing. Some even have accommodation available. Our usual practice is to provide the HYC member with a letter of introduction confirming membership and the expected dates of your visit, a copy of which is also forwarded to the club being attended. Carrying your HYC membership card is also helpful. Many other yacht clubs will allow you to enter their facilities upon proof of your membership. Our usual Terms and Conditions, which apply to reciprocal membership agreements, are: 1. All visiting Club members must produce a letter of introduction issued by the Visiting Club to the Front Office of the Host Club and observe the necessary registration procedures to gain admission to the Host Club.

2. Visiting Club members shall abide by the Rules and Regulations of the Host Club and it’s Bylaws. 3. Visiting Club members shall be limited to no more than six visits to the Host Club within a year. Reciprocal agreements are in place with: Sandringham Yacht Club – Sandringham, Melbourne Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron – St Kilda, Melbourne Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, Singapore Singapore Air Force Yacht Club – Singapore Seychelles Yacht Club – Seychelles Venetian Yacht Club (Compania della vela), Venice And soon to be confirmed... Dirk Hartog The Ocean Classic Race held once every 400 years Three yachts from Hillarys Yacht Club were amongst 23 that set sail from Fremantle on Sunday 16th October in a two-leg race to Geraldton and then to Denham as part of the celebrations for the 400th anniversary of the landing of Dirk Hartog on the island that now bears his name. The race start had been postponed by 24 hours due to the forecast of dangerous wind and swell conditions off Cape Vlamingh, so with colourful spinnakers flying the yachts were pushed along by the strong southerlies to set fast times for the leg to Geraldton. Kraken sailed by Todd Giraudo was the most successful Hillarys yacht winning the double-handed IRC division whilst Mulberry (Mark Pitt) was 6th in division two and Perle (John Bird) was 11th. Mulberry was a front-runner until the topping lift broke and the spinnaker wrapped around the forestay and Perle lost the use of both spinnakers with parting halyards and fittings over the two days. Perle enjoyed the lay-days however, winning the Lobster Pot series in Geraldton. With the strong southerly winds building, some anticipated a delay to the start for the Denham leg however this was not to be and several yachts withdrew before the start. During the day the wind strengthened to 25 knots and then to over 30 knots gusting to 40 knots after midnight. Kraken was one of two yachts to be dis-masted and a third yacht lost steerage. Surfing downwind at 14

knots, Perle gybed and the force broke the gooseneck and so the mainsail and boom was brought down and lashed to the deck. Eleven yachts finished the race and five retired, including Perle and Kraken. Mulberry despite breaking a spinnaker pole went on to finish a very creditable second in IRC and YAH division two, only 8 minutes off first after racing for 32 hours 47 minutes. Mark Pitt said “I haven’t done anything as exciting as these two races since I was a kid. Luckily we had a great team on board”. Kraken motored back to Geraldton whilst Perle remained in Denham for repairs before sailing on to Carnarvon to await a better weather window to head south. Jon Sanders, using the races to commence his 10th circumnavigation of the globe in Perie Banou 11, sailed conservatively in the strong winds and after finishing, rested for two days before sailing on to Carnarvon, his official exit point from Australia. We wish Jon fair winds and calmer seas than were experienced in the Dirk Hartog Classic Ocean Race as he sails around the globe. As Alan Stein, who collected most of the trophies on offer in Dirty Deeds, said at the presentations “thankfully the race is only held once every four hundred years”.

■ John Bird Jon Sanders on Perie Banou 11 starts his circumnavigation with the Fremantle to Geraldton race

Should I buy a jetski or a boat? Why not have both? Don’t leave the family stranded on the beach watching the back of your jetski, get them all aboard and enjoying the exhilaration of being on the water! Sealver Waveboats (made in Arcachon, France) produce 3 great models. These are powered and controlled by a jet ski, which docks into the rear of the Waveboat.

CLUB EVENTS FATHER’S DAY

MELBOURNE CUP

A day of buffets across breakfast, lunch and dinner celebrated dads far and wide with 420 people enjoying the Club and treating the special men in their lives. The lunchtime buffet was also a treat for little ones with a face painting clown on hand for entertainment and a lasting reminder of a great day out with dad! Ralph Richardson and Aaron Woolley, two regulars at our Friday and Sunday live music nights, set the atmosphere across breakfast and lunch and continued on into our usual Sunday music slot.

AFL GRAND FINAL

Another fully booked Melbourne Cup event brought 280 Members and guests into the Harbour Room for a delicious four course lunch and a champagne cocktail welcome! Local trio Shimmer got the crowd dancing and received overwhelming rave reviews for their performances. With more sweepstakes than ever before, the HYC Melbourne Cup event raised over $1,500 for charity Wheelchairs for Kids - a group of retiree volunteers in Australia who make and distribute up to 300 wheelchairs per month to poor disabled children in developing countries. So thank you to everyone for your support and taking part!

A packed bar saw footy fans enjoy the action on our new big screen TV and the enclosed Wet Bar. Regardless of whether the right team won, it was a great afternoon!

Social Events

OPENING DAY Despite some windy conditions, huge numbers turned out for Opening Day, the official start of the sailing season. The lure of a petting zoo, bouncy castle and SuperHeroes was too much to be ignored for the children: they took full advantage of the games on offer, the face painting and of course, lots of cute animals to say hello to! The SuperHeroes weren’t lost on the adults either! Many VIPs, Members and guests all took the opportunity to get their photo taken with IronMan and Spider-Man, whose athletic jumps onto bars definitely deserved the attention! A large turn out of VIPs buoyed the efforts of the HYC team; their support of the Club goes a long way and is gratefully received.

Chris Blackney

Chris first joined HYC in 2000 with his wife Susanne, when he purchased his first yacht, a 34 foot UFO. Prior to this, Chris spent a childhood fishing off Rotto in a very small dingy called Fred. In later years, while in the Navy, Chris crewed on a variety of yachts in Sydney and Adelaide.

FAMILY Chris and Susanne will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in December. Their daughter Serena is married to Jeff and has two gorgeous girls, Lyla, two and a half and Asha who is about to have her first birthday. Their son Daniel has followed his heart and now lives in Wales with his fiancĂŠ Emma.

OCCUPATION Chris is now transitioning into retirement after careers in the Royal Australian Navy and the Computer Industry. Chris joined the R.A.N at 16 and performed roles in Navigation and Oceanography on destroyers and patrol boats. Chris moved into the computer industry in 1986, working in global organisations including IBM and CSC. Chris and his family have enjoyed several overseas assignments to Dallas, Texas and Raleigh, North Carolina in the USA, The Hague in the Netherlands, London UK , Hong Kong and Singapore.

YACHTING After selling the UFO in 2002, Chris purchased a Bavaria 40 called Vaya Con Dios, big enough to cruise comfortably to Rotto, Rockingham and Quindalup. As well as being active members of CIC, Chris is an avid sailor in the Keel division. He has served on the Keel Committee as well as Pens & Moorings. Highlights on the water have been sailing in Hong Kong, the Whitsundays and Croatia.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT SAFETY IN WATER ACTIVITIES There have been two recent incidents in WA that are timely reminders for us and our duty of care while we conduct our boating and Yacht Club business. Sadly, a woman recently drowned following a boat capsize. It is understood she was finding it difficult to swim in her life jacket, and took it off. To protect our Members, Hillarys Yacht Club will conduct a Safety Seminar on Saturday, December 10 at 2.00pm to encourage all members to check their safety equipment and understand how to use it. It is important to know if your chosen life jacket on your boat fits you correctly and that you can swim whilst wearing it. In a second recent incident, a sailor on the river had an epileptic seizure, fell out of his boat and was found face down by the rescue boat. The terrific efforts of all concerned has resulted in this sailor on the way to recovery. At HYC we conduct regular training and provide first aid training for our volunteers and staff. We do ask all of our members, when on the water, to be very observant of everything around them and hold safety as your highest priority.

TACKERS COURSES Our Tackers training has given a number of young sailors the opportunity to learn the skills on the water. Our school holiday programs are being conducted in the December and January school holidays: Call 9246 2833 to book your place!

DIVE

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm

HYC Divers go for gold... ... in underwater cross-dressing?? UNDERWATER SCUBA CHAMPIONSHIPS, you ask? This was an initiative of the HYC dive section, and the aim of establishing this competition was three-fold. First: to allow divers to showcase their underwater skills and their ability to handle situations that would require the removal of their scuba gear underwater. This was a safety related exercise as entanglement underwater is a real possibility. Secondly the dive section wished to develop and foster relationships with other like-minded dive clubs that exist along our portion of the coastline. Third, once the competition was established [which it now is] it is our intention to promote the event on an annual basis and invite the public as well as other dive institutions to participate in the competition and invite participants to become members of the fostering clubs being Ocean Reef Sea Sports club [ORSSC] and HYC.

20 Compass December 2016 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc

Initially, the plan was to invite ORSSC and the MAAC divers to participate with us, however the MAAC divers found the competition too strong and decided to stay at home. So ORSSC and ourselves fielded 18 intrepid divers willing to give it a go. The competition was held at the HBF Challenge Stadium 5 metre dive pool in Mt Claremont and at this point I wish to thank the staff at Challenge Stadium for their fantastic support in helping us to get organised. The competition itself was a timed event which involved divers in all their finery taking a giant stride off the pool side and swimming to one of five dive flags anchored on the bottom of the pool. On the start signal, the five divers then descended to the bottom and had to perform a basic dump and recovery of ALL their scuba gear, with a bit of a twist. The divers were required to put on a pair of shorts, which required the removal and replacement of their fins. They had to put on a T shirt which required the removal of their mask/snorkel, regulator, and their BCD and tank. They then had to put on a lady’s brassiere OVER the T shirt, then put

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

their weight belt back on OVER the T shirt. Then replace the BCD and tank. The timing of the competition finished when they returned to the side of the pool. The diver with the lowest time won the competition. Penalty seconds were added to a diver’s time if the weight belt was not over the T shirt. Only one diver received a penalty and this one diver still went on to win the gold medallion. The team event comprised taking the lowest times from five divers from each competing club and the team with the lowest total score won the Perpetual Trophy. The results for your HYC divers were fantastic, we picked up the Gold / Silver / Bronze medallions and the Perpetual Trophy. A clean sweep, well done guys. The fastest time was recorded by Luke Laycock [3mins 24 secs] second was Paul Laycock [Luke`s father in 3mins 29 secs] third was Sean Perkins [4mins 24 secs]. The total team time was 21 mins and 46 secs. The ORSSC team time was 26mins and 49 secs. In an event like this, safety was of paramount importance and I must thank the safety divers who spent some hours in the water watching the participants go through their paces. I would also like to thank the photographer, June Sullivan for her sterling effort on the day. Finally, a competitive

event like this would not be successful if sponsors did not donate prizes for competitors and a BIG thank you goes out to Tusa for the wonderful array of prizes they donated, including torches, backpacks, masks, hair tamers and books and thanks to Troy from Perth Diving Academy, Hillarys for organising Tusa’s involvement. Scuba imports for their contribution of books as well as safety line cutters, and HYC for donating a dinner for two in our restaurant. Next year we have expressions of interest again from the MAAC Club [hope they turn up] Fremantle Sailing Club dive section and possibly a team from a club based near Fish Rock Caves in NSW. With the baton for organising next year’s event passing to ORSSC [with HYC assistance], we will also be targeting the individual diver in the northern and southern suburbs with the intention of promoting membership of our active dive sections. This is the start of something BIG! To everybody involved in the organisation of this event, thank you very much and we now hand the baton to ORSSC to organise next year’s event.

UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 4 Wed of the Month at 7.00pm

DINGHY

th

The Winter Series race days had only four of the six days due to cold fronts canceling sailing. There was a great response to the training days which were conducted on other Saturdays. It has been good for sailors who have completed the Tackers courses to join us for our sailing activities. Our part of the Bart’s Bash event, which is the World’s largest sailing event, was held in September and was well supported and enjoyed. In late September, some of our Optimist and Laser sailors took part in the annual WestSail training camp for junior sailors at Rockingham. During the school holidays HYC conducted three days of coaching for Laser sailors of all ages which was well attended by sailors from other Clubs. Great effort by everyone in very competitive environments. Although some of our Summer Series Saturday morning race days were lost due to some unsuitable weather, the number of people is steadily improving each week for racing, training and other sailing activities. The coaching of new and less experienced sailors remains our focus each week and is showing rewards with improved skills and enjoyment. These are some of the activities that Dinghy sailors, families and supporters can be involved in during the next few months, aside from the regular race days:

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

A Family Fun Day, BBQ & cruise on 17 December; the fun and relaxed format of the Cow Rock race in January is a good way to get the sailing started again after the break for Christmas and New Year; Dinghy fleets will again take part in an Australia Day race and celebration, to coincide with the Keel boat fleet’s race and celebration. In February we can expect to see even more boats at our Pot of Gold regatta.

KEELBOAT RACING

UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm

OPENING DAY Amidst a kaleidoscope of colour and movement consisting of Marvel comic superheros, face painting, animal farm, bouncy castle and hundreds of members, fellow flag officers and sponsors, the Mayor of Joondalup, Troy Pickard opened the 2016/17 season. The firing of the cannon and flag-raising sent crews to boats for the colourful sail-past and salute. Best dressed yacht was Ron Marian’s First Impression and best dressed power boat was Bill Barclay’s Ambassador. Despite the reprieve from the rain, the 18 knot westerly created drama for the sailors on the high seas with dinghies staying at home and the catamaran of Ian Walker, Sally Malay, retiring with a broken daggerboard after ploughing into a 3 metre wave. Roric Smith went out in his recently acquired Pogo 12.5 Surfer Rosa and with assistance from Chris Kelly showed she will be a handful in future races. Accolades to the HYC Youth Squad who, in their first outing in Xtreme, were a creditable second in division two. The Commodore’s Cup was won by Jack Tar (Bill Gilbert) in division one, Covert Operation (Graham Atkinson and Bart Brouwer) in division two and Sublime (John Newman) in jib and main (division three).

ALL SERIES UNDERWAY The division one fleet for the first consistency race was reduced, with boats and personnel away for the Dirk Hartog races and celebrations paving the way for another win for Hard Evidence. However, the competition was close in division two. Blue Chip pipped Pandora by just two seconds with Volant third ahead of the fastest on the day, Covert Operation. The Marmion Reef Ocean Race takes yachts outside the reef between the Centaur mark and Ocean Reef giving them a swell spinnaker ride up the coast. After four hours of

Dec 11 Consistency Race 4 Dec 18 Consistency Race 5 Dec 26-29 Cockburn Sound Regatta racing it was first and fastest in all divisions for Dart Vader (div 1), Covert Operation (div 2) and Sensei (div 3). The first race of the North Coast Series was held in a very strong sou-wester and the strengthening breeze caused the cancellation of the second race on the day. Fresh from the Dirk Hartog races, Neil Harrison handled the conditions best to record a first and fastest in division one, Sally Malay was second and Leda, the first ORSSC boat was third. Bad Habits needs to eliminate one more after losing ground with a huge Chinese gybe. Chris Kelly on HYC Training was first over the line in division two however had to settle for second on handicap to Geoff James on Panache competing for ORSSC with Show Me (Bruce Ellery) third. A two point win to ORSSC over HYC on the day will ensure competitive and close encounters for the rest of the series.

DISCOVER SAILING DAY In ideal conditions for newcomers many enthusiastic youngsters and adults came to HYC to have a go at sailing. Thank you to skippers and crews of Moonshadow, Seachange, Surfer Rosa, HYC Training, Vela, Panache, Covert Operation and Holly Molly for the many trips taking visitors out on their boats during the morning, and to the volunteers onshore juggling the departures. We hope to see the fruits of your efforts realised with new members fronting up for crewing, courses or the cuisine at HYC.

CRUISING IN COMPANY The Annual C.I.C. Progressive Dinner was held on the evening of Saturday 3rd September. The theme of the evening was “Back to School”. All of us looked decades younger, as we arrived for cocktails at the club before heading down to the yachts for the unique experience of progressively dining onboard our beautifully prepared yachts. The weather was perfect. An evening not to be missed! Thanks to the organisers Linda and Brett Bailey.

The October 2016 Banco Cruise Initially nine yachts nominated to go on the cruise, but due to various reasons, this was trimmed down to just three by the weekend. It was a small but elite gathering, with yachts attending being: Vela, Panache and Banco. On the sail down, Panache and Banco encountered strong winds with occasional squalls up to 30kn. The wind had enough West in it to enable yachts to sail above the course to Fremantle in anticipation of a shift to the South West later. We got it right and were able to arrive without having to tack. It was an exciting and stimulating sail. At around 5.30pm a sundowner was held on Vela (they had sailed down the day before.) We were pleased that Rob and Pam James joined us for some chat before leaving to attend an 80th birthday party being held upstairs at FSC. We also had two boat crews who elected to drive to Freo and join us for the dinner. Thanks to Robyn, Hugh, Brian and Rita for helping to make the evening a great success. On Sunday morning we repaired to a beach-side café for breakfast and a chat. All boats had departed by 11.30am and the sail back was with a following breeze. Foresail only was the way to go and as the journey progressed, wind strength increased and we ended up in fine style. It was a great weekend.

■ John and Norman, Banco.

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm

Dirk Hartog Ocean Classic Cruising in Company was well represented in the races to Geraldton and Denham with Nick Cox, Greg Shakeshaft and John Bird (and 3 keelers) racing Perle. Preparations were necessary to bring Perle up to Cat 2 safety and to make her a little more competitive, including the tiresome installation of a manual bilge below in addition to the electric one and cockpit pump. A storm trysail from Chris Kelly and a pole from Chris Hutchings together with purchases of storm jib and symmetrical spinnaker and the hiring of a life raft from Great Circle were some of the items. A sat phone was used to give daily reports by text to our loved ones when out of mobile phone reception. Each race only took two days and with the ability to follow boats on the yellow brick tracker or marine traffic we never seemed far away. A lesson learned during the night when following winds gusted to 35 knots causing big seas and a few round-ups was that we should have removed the pole which was used to pole out the headsail and used a “gybe-tamer” on the mainsail (see article on page 8). Perhaps then the gooseneck would not have broken and we could have finished the race. Repairs were possible with parts couriered from Fremantle and Geraldton and the use of a big pop-riveter from Edrick Delfos of Shiraz 111 and Geoff of Denham Engineering lending a hand. Kurt Willi who towed his McGregor yacht to Denham provided invaluable assistance ferrying us around in his dinghy, the McGregor and car. Thank you Kurt.

ANGLING

SEPTEMBER BOAT COMPETITION A forecast of winds developing during the day deterred the small boat anglers, however, 12 ventured out for what turned out to be a very disappointing day on the water with only four species recorded from the eight anglers who weighed in. Junior winner was Jake Speed with 2 species, Lady Winner was Ruby McGrady with three species and men’s winner was Greg Mansell with two species. Winner of the wheel spin was Jake Speed with a 0.106g herring.

JUNIORS’ FISHING CLINIC The regular fishing clinic for juniors in the school holidays was again held with 15 eager young anglers enrolled. Day One included shore based and safety activities and a talk from members of Recfishwest. With terrible weather, the boat fishing next day was eagerly awaited. Although better, the weather was still not good for boating, the result being some seasickness and few varieties of fish. Thursday however was much better and some very nice fish were caught amongst the eight species weighed in. Best fish were Jake Faulkner’s Breaksea cod of 664g and Ben Bergin’s 801g Skippy. Overall winner was Jake Faulkner with three species and 35.894 points from Marc Faulkner, also 3 species and 34.952 points. Third was Ben Bergin, with 2 species and 27.026 points.

MARINA FACILITIES

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 3rd Mon of the Month at 7.30pm

December is the beginning of the “high risk” period for marine incidents due to the warmer weather and a greater majority of us taking leave to enjoy time on the water with our families and friends. Western Australians are indeed blessed with a pristine coastline and easy access to islands just a short distance from the mainland so it is not surprising that in 2009 there were 85,806 registered recreational vessels throughout the state with a further 1,200 unregistered dinghies, catamarans and keel boats. While the statistics for 2016 are yet to be released, Western Australia boasts the highest boat ownership per capita that sees a steady stream of vessels venturing out on the water on most summer weekends. The aspect of safety of your vessel on the water has never been more important and begins even before your departure. Some simple rules to follow are: • Keep your finger jetty clear of all obstacles giving your guests a clear pathway • Follow a pre-departure check list of your vessel including all safety equipment • Provide a safety briefing to your guests and include the kids • Designate an assistant skipper to ensure familiarity of your vessel • Use your radio to sign on • Most importantly use “Common Sense” which means safe speed & navigation

In 2015, the Fremantle and Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Groups responded to over 1,000 calls for assistance, with the majority of them being for vessels experiencing mechanical difficulties. A simple start-up checklist will prevent you from becoming one of these statistics and should include: • Fuel system check with special attention given to hoses and connections • Electrical system looking out for corrosion and battery condition • Belts, cables & hoses require close inspections • Fluid level checks of the engine, steering, coolant and trim • Safety gear including life jackets, fire extinguishers, flares, radio and EPIRB • Propellers and Hulls should be cleaned and inspected annually During 2016, the Marina Facilities Committee undertook numerous boat inspections as required by HYC and we acknowledge the members for their accommodating manner that enabled these inspections to be carried out in a timely manner. We also saw significant changes to rules and regulations (usually not by HYC!) and we remind members that the safety of our members, their families and friends is our highest priority. On behalf of all the committee members we wish you a safe and merry Christmas on and off the water and we look forward to working with you in 2017.

POWER

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm

The start of the “Power Season” has been a bit mixed. We have had some magnificent weather but also some quite rough seas. The first outing of the new season was our river trip up to East Perth for lunch at The Royal. Unfortunately only a small number attended because of threatened weather but it was thoroughly enjoyed by those who did! We will be repeating this activity later in the season to see if we can get more trailer boats involved and a much larger group of people. On 6th November the Power Section held a progressive dinner in the clubhouse and on members’ boats. We had 24 attendees who greatly enjoyed the occasion. Prawns and crayfish, excellently prepared, did not last very long even though there were lots on Graham and Nicki’s boat! It was then on to Kost-u-moet for steak, chicken and sausages BBQ’d to perfection by Leigh together with more salads than you can poke a stick at prepared by Jean and Nella. I don’t think anyone had any space left for drinks and chocolates after the meal – I think they must have evaporated all on their own. A big thank you to all involved in the preparation and execution of the evening. The Power Section organised the Champagne Raffle for the Melbourne Cup Lunch once again with Leigh and Barry selling lots of tickets and eventually drawing three prizes of Moet and chocolates. I think the lunch was a success enjoyed by those who attended. I hope the raffle was equally enjoyed. Future activities will include the section Christmas Dinner to be held Friday 11th December in the Meeting Room. We will have the section Beach BBQ in Narrowneck Bay on the afternoon of Saturday 23rd January (Australia Day long weekend) perhaps finishing with a drink or two on the boats. The Power Section Rottnest Mini-Golf Super Challenge will be held on the morning of HYC Rottnest Run – due on 30th April. The section is hoping to reschedule the Pirate Raid to Claremont Yacht Club – watch out for further news. Other activities are in planning – keep an eye on the notice boards and flyers for details. Anyone, be they boaties or not, interested in attending any of the Power Section activities please contact Barry (0430 150 301) or Leigh (0427 191 695). I hope you have a safe and joyful Festive Season and I hope to see you all enjoying Hillarys Yacht Club!
