COMMODORE’S REPORT

The Sun rises on the 2017 Harbour Classic

Hello, I can’t believe that we are already into June! How quickly time flies! It seems like yesterday that we were enjoying the great weather that lingered on from a distant summer. This time of year also signifies the conclusion of the Summer Sailing Season and the reduced ‘on water’ activities for our sections. With saying that, it is the beginning of another season of Club events planned for the colder months such as the Commodores Ball on the 24th June. Either way there is always something happening here at HYC – keep an eye out for your What’s On emails and club marketing.

Power Cruise With the less than perfect summer boating season behind us and what has been, to date, a sensational Autumn on the water, many of our members are finally enjoying the great conditions. No better example of this is the success of the Power Section’s Twilight Cruise held recently seeing over 100 members, families and friends jump on board several boats kindly provided by some of our very generous skippers to experience perfectly flat water and a soothing gentle evening breeze. Upon returning to the marina, members packed into Pinky’s Wet Bar for a BBQ and several drinks.

Family Snorkel Day Another opportunity for members to be involved in an “on water” club event was the Family Snorkel Day. Unfortunately not all events enjoy the best timing with respect to weather and the day was sadly affected by some not-so-welcoming conditions. Full credit to the Dive Section for seeing the event through and looking after several members who had a fantastic time snorkeling around Little Island.

Harbour Classic As they have in the past, many volunteers braved the 5am cold to ensure the Harbour Classic got off to a good start. As competitors signed in and picked up their hessian bags, Dinghy volunteers were busy providing a great breakfast burger and hot coffee. With the Anglers’ sights set firmly on securing a winning catch, they enjoyed fantastic boating conditions. Thanks to Club sponsors who supplied the large prize pool. The competitors, their families, volunteers and staff all ensured that our Club’s premier Angling event was as successful as we have come to expect.

Keel Presentation I had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Keel Presentation just before this issue went to print and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the organising committee who all did such a great job putting the whole evening together. The entire night was extremely well run. In addition, the music by No Direction (featuring a couple of HYC members) kept people in high spirits. The meals and accompanying service was superb.

New Members Night The 2017 New Members Night was held in April with our five Rear Commodores giving a short but precise presentation of their respective sections’ offerings. This informative night also provided the opportunity for new members to fully appreciate the activities that they can participate in, whilst enjoying a very casual social atmosphere. It has been great to observe many new members actively pursuing the various club activities, events and initiatives made available to them, some of whom have joined section committees. Participation is the key to getting the most value from your membership, a point I make at every new member interview.

Fremantle to Bali Race HYC members, Skipper Todd Giraudo and David White (Dubbo) aboard their boat Kraken, recently competed in the 2017 Fremantle to Bali Ocean Classic, one of Australia’s longest international ocean races. Their finish of 3rd over the line and 2nd on IRC was very impressive. The performance was reflective of their determination and level of commitment and you can read the full story of their adventure in our feature article (page 8). We wish them the best of luck for the Melbourne to Osaka race next year.

Rottnest Run The large swell and strong winds didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for this year’s run to Rotto which saw a large contingent of members attend. This event has grown year on year and is enjoyed by a wide cross section of the Club. Again, it was a great success. Thanks again to our Club sponsors for making sure all members had a wonderful night. For many, the weekend extended through to Monday to include Sunday afternoon’s John Farnham concert. The journey home the following day was a little daunting with the storm that threatened to cancel the concert setting in.

Jag The Joker In its new time slot of Friday (draw at 6.30pm), the Jag the Joker jackpot is currently over $1 ,200. I take this opportunity to say thank you to the many members who “week in - week out” make the time to participate in the draw. You have to be in it to win it so give it a go before dinner at the club next Friday. You will find us in the Wet Bar. Every time you buy a drink you receive a ticket for the barrel.

Club Review Whilst the February Special General Meeting is well behind us, the new membership fee structure and indexing system is now well at work alongside the several other strategies in place, all looking to future-proof our Club. The feedback relating to various non SGM matters have been tabled and are now being examined, fine tuned and in some cases, being implemented. Just to mention a few of the tabled suggestions: A possible Bosun’s Club for volunteers who want to assist around the club, wet bar acoustics, solar power and so on. Those ideas and improvements that have the merit to advance, subject to Management approval, will be implemented as and when funding becomes available. However, we must be patient as the Club is not awash with additional funds.

Financial An extremely tough trading environment, maybe the worst we have seen for decades, has seen our club experience significant hurdles in delivering a positive result for the 2017 reporting year. Fortunately we have in fact, posted a small surplus (subject to final year adjustment and auditing). Whilst well short of where we would like to be, the positive result speaks volumes about the incredible “value for money” Club we have. With all this in mind and the need to make sure our bars, restaurants, functions and services are busy, I hope to see you all taking full advantage of the wonderful opportunities within our Club. So bring down your friends, invite them for a meal and enjoy the great outlook and atmosphere. I’ll see you there! ■ Simon Davenport, Commodore

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Volunteer Support As the summer season ends so do our major on-water activities of the Club and our participating sections. With their presentation nights, dinners and season trophies being awarded to active and successful participants, we need to thank all those who really make it all possible, our Volunteer Members. We have been very fortunate at HYC to have some long time, very committed and capable volunteers. Their ongoing support and assistance to the Club and all the events we conduct is truly appreciated. As many of our most active volunteers have been involved for many years and have moved into their senior years, there is a need for us to seek more volunteers to lessen the load that is upon them and take on some of the roles these fine members have donated their time and effort to over so many years.

A Call for Volunteers During the last few months, the leaders of our Club sections, the Rear Commodores (volunteers in their own right), have been expressing the burden placed on activities as the load put on our current volunteers becomes more difficult. We would ask that if you are interested and have the time to assist in any of the areas of our Club you may wish to become involved with, that you make yourself known and contact one of those listed below, so you may become one of our great volunteers. If you feel a little reserved or think your current knowledge or ability is holding you back, don’t worry. We have ongoing education and training for you to gain that knowledge. Our

training and development team, Chris Kelly and Mel Harvey are ready to assist if you want to be involved in any onwater activity including our Junior and Dinghy divisions, our racing and sailing Keelboat activities or our Junior Fishing clinics. Anything from assistance on the ground preparing our young sailor vessels for competition, accompanying our dinghy and keel rescue vessels during competition, being a member of our race start team, or helping out the young anglers, all are welcomed. If you prefer land based involvement, our Marina Facilities section maintains our pens and jetties for minor maintenance needs and coordinates safety inspections of our moored vessels. Be it pen rope or weight replacement, repairing jetty toe rails, painting pen numbers on jetties or any other minor needs, there is room for you. Also around the Club grounds: lawns, gardens, carpark, parts of the clubhouse, the junior clubhouse all require constant attention. Brad, our Maintenance Officer, would be happy to have you contact him for assistance. We all know and appreciate that, in these current economic times, family needs and responsibilities pressure the available free time of adults and families more and more, and especially weekends. But if you have a bit of time, even during the week, and wish to help out as a volunteer in any area, you will be welcomed to our team. We certainly don’t expect volunteers to be involved in any difficult or dangerous activities, up ladders or heavy lifting needs etc... Nor do we expect them to always be available, but if there is a possibility you may be able to volunteer some of your time to any one of the areas of our Club, please contact us. If you’re interested or wish to find out more, the people below can be contacted at the Club. Thank you. Adventures aboard Kraken. From Fremantle to Bali

A total of 14 yachts started the race on Saturday 6 May in 10kts of wind and sunshine. The fleet was split evenly with seven yachts in race division and seven in cruise, of which there would be two retirements, with 12 yachts finishing. We had planned on a 9 to 10 day race time. The course is simple: start to Campbell mark off Cottelsoe, then Fairway and head north to finish at the entrance to Benoa Harbour, being the port for Bali. The course distance is some 1440nm and is the longest ocean race that originates in Western Australia. This is a Category 1 race in terms of safety requirements, the essence of which is to ensure yachts are self-sufficient for extended periods of time, capable of withstanding heavy storms and prepared to meet serious emergencies without the expectation of outside assistance. In recent months, Kraken has been fitted with a watermaker, satellite communications, lithium batteries and a beanbag bed (the latter definitely worthy of a mention). Kraken is entered into the Melbourne to Osaka double handed ocean race, a distance of some 5500nm, that starts in March 2018. The Fremantle to Bali race was planned to test all the equipment. With a full moon and light-to-moderate breezes, it turned out to be a glamourous offshore race. There were some very light winds on the second night with most of the fleet parked up off Geraldton. Once past Cape Inscription, yachts needed to decide on running the gauntlet of the direct route north against the Leeuwin current and potential light winds or gybe out to sea. We choose the latter with our weather modelling indicating the need to be +111o west to skirt around the low pressure cell that sits west of North West Cape. This is no small detour as this takes you to approximately 100nm due west of North West Cape.

8 Compass June 2017 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc

A southerly came through about eight hours after our gybe out to the west enabling some of the yachts to take the inside route. Our final gybe was abeam of North West Cape and a straight line to Bali. The tradewinds did clock to the south east and east several days later after the southerly dissipated. Winds varied from 12-15kts during the day to 15-18kts during the night, although with clear skies and a full moon, there was not much difference between day and night. It was not all our way with an average of 1kt of adverse current north of Cape Inscription – which is a long way south of Bali! Our track took us over the Exmouth Plateau and our first exposure to what +2.5kts of current does. So much for open oceans being straight forward. We had favourable currents with only 4kts against us for about two hours prior to reaching the shallow water of Bali. With 10-15kts of wind, we always had over 4kts speed over ground. In previous races, yachts have spent days battling the currents when the winds are light. Prime Factor had 10kts of current against on approach into Bali due to being further east. Apart from the light winds off Geraldton, the majority of the race was with the wind behind us or from the beam – woohoo – spinnakers, Code O or reaching with a headsail. No water on the deck until Day 6. We hand steered for five days and then spent a concerted effort to understand and fine tune the autohelm, which then steered for the majority of the three days. The skipper smuggled on a carton of rum and cokes for happy hour – woohoo! One rum per man per day – repeat as necessary!

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

Walk on the Wild Side took the trifecta for fastest, first on IRC and YAH. We were very happy with our second place on IRC with a race time of some 8 days, 16 hours, 55 minutes, beating Endorfin in third place by 33 minutes on corrected time. The Edge and ourselves were the first double handed entries to compete in this race. The Edge retired due to electrical issues. A delivery skipper and crew will sail Kraken back to HYC. The next adventures will include delivery to Melbourne, Melbourne to Hobart in December and then Melbourne to Osaka starting in March 2018. The Melbourne Osaka race is 5500nm, Australia’s longest ocean race, with all yachts sailed double handed. ■Todd Giraudo

CLUB EVENTS St Patrick’s Day Wow! What a night! Irish spirit was out in force for a Friday Night St Patrick’s Day. Ironbark Rebel Irish Band got almost every foot instinctively tapping and set the atmosphere for a night full of frivolities. It was a sold out evening for families, couples and friends all enjoying the Friday buffet with a bit of an Irish twist.

Mother’s Day Our favourite Mother’s Day celebrations were, once again, well attended throughout breakfast, lunch and dinner and with live entertainment all day, it was again lovely to see so many Mums being celebrated in style. Thanks to Jay Weston for kicking off the day with a semi-acoustic set and even impressed with a little Opera singing towards the end! Jhoe Mura created a chilled out acoustic set for lunchtime, while Drippy the Dragon proved extremely popular with the little ones, playing games on the balcony and clearly working up their appetites for the dessert buffet! Ralph Richardson wound up the day with his set over dinner but the treats for three lucky Mums didn’t stop there: Congratulations to Nicole Prentice, Jacqueline Pawle and Evie Deas Isaacson who each won a $150 voucher to spend with Living Colour for Hair! Thank you to Living Colour for sponsoring our Mother’s Day celebrations, to the musicians for creating the atmosphere, to Drippy the Dragon for allowing Mums to be left in peace for a short while, and to the HYC Chefs and staff for putting on such a great day of celebrations!

Section Presentation Dinners It was a pleasure once again to host the Cruising in Company, Keelboat and Dinghy Section dinners as part of their end-of-season celebrations. As well as the awards and reminiscing, these Section Dinners are a great opportunity to show our appreciation to all the volunteers who spend so much of their time ensuring that sailors of all ages are celebrated and have a thoroughly enjoyable time, both on and off the water.

Know your skipper

Marilyn & John Newman

Marilyn and I were first introduced to sailing in Wagga Wagga, NSW in 1972 while serving in the RAAF. It's a strange place to learn to sail being a few hundred kilometres from the ocean - Sydney to the east and Melbourne to the south. Lake Albert is about the same size as Lake Monger in Leederville. We sailed Mirrors - the standard 10 footers and a 16 footer which we labelled "The Bus" because we packed in everyone who didn't get a spot on other boats. Some RAAF members had their own dinghies and John spent a season crewing on an NS14. After being posted to RAAF Pearce, John was appointed Officer-in-Charge of sailing and spent four years sailing Corsair dinghies from the Perth Flying Squadron. We also bought a Red Jacket in partnership with a RAAF colleague. As our family expanded to five, we bought a Mirror 10 to teach the kids the fun of sailing and a couple of Surf Cats. Eventually, sailing took a back seat - swimming and surf clubs, wave skiing and twice yearly camping trips occupied our time. Our two older children moved to the east coast and then all three moved to Europe with their work. So it was time to get back into sailing. Marilyn and I joined Hillarys Yacht Club in 2005. We had no boat and wanted to sail on as many different types as possible before buying one of our own. We decided on a Viking and, after much searching, bought Gwenyth and renamed her Sublime. We've had 10 seasons of great enjoyment and comradeship among fellow keel sailors. That

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

enjoyment has led to Sublime winning the Division 2 Overall Consistency Trophy three times - an achievement we are very proud of. The cornerstone of that success was keeping the core crew of my brother Peter and long time mate Ian together. We had a passing parade of other crew over the years but have sailed 3-up and, this season, 2-up in the JAM Division. Not much gets said on Sublime during a race. Everyone knows what needs to be done and gets on with it. Our motto has always been "Everyone makes mistakes what counts is how efficiently the mistake is rectified". Seven years ago, Marilyn joined the Race Management Team and it is often her voice heard doing the pre-start countdown on race days. Using her long experience on large computer systems, Marilyn also took responsibility for data entry and result generation when on duty. John has held the positions of Treasurer and Handicapper for the Keel Section. We were both part of the Hillarys Race Management Team at the 2011 World Sailing Championship staffing the radios on the "bridge". Marilyn and John are spending the next 7 months "sailing" their camper trailer around Australia - Pilbara, Kimberley, NT, far north QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, SA and back to Perth, catching up with past work colleagues as we go. Sublime is currently on the market.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT The season has been completed and we now look forward to our winter Keel and Dinghy series and the planning that goes towards preparing our sailors for our next Summer season. Our Dinghy Winter series commences on Saturday 10 June and the Keel series commences on the following Sunday, 18 June. In the meantime, the winter gives us the opportunity to review our Risk Management Plans and to develop and provide any training to support those operations.

Youth Squad Our Youth Squad have had a good season sailing Xtreme in our Keel events and we look forward to seeing the achievements these young sailors bring the Club (and themselves) in future seasons! Developing the growth and strength of our Youth Squad is a main goal for the Training & Development team and in the upcoming season, we hope to increase the number of boys and girls in the squad. Despite its growing popularity, vacancies will exist and we invite any member under 20 years of age to apply to the Training Manager at chris@hillarysyachtclub.com.au.

Preparations for Nationals A team of club members has already begun its training and preparations to represent Hillarys Yacht Club and Western Australia at the forthcoming National Championships in the Optimist and Laser classes. We are hopeful we will have six sailing the Optimist class and six sailing the Laser Radial and 4.7 divisions as they make the trip across the country to compete in regattas at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, commencing after Christmas. We wish our sailors the best of luck in their preparations and, of course, will follow their progress closely!

Upcoming Courses Our training courses continue over the winter period in order to gear up your skills for the start of next season. Courses can be both theoretical and practical in nature and are all conducted by fully qualified instructors. Available for ages 7 and up, there is something for everyone and we encourage all members (and in fact, non-members too) to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge we have at the Club to develop your skills! Some of our courses are listed opposite, with full details on our website under the ‘Courses’ tab or via email at development@hillarysyachtclub.com.au.

Try Snorkeling Day The inaugural “HYC Try Snorkeling Day” was planned for Sunday 19th March, however inclement weather conditions caused the event to be cancelled and transferred to the Sunday 9th April. The day was sunny with a gentle breeze and we met all the participants in the Pinky’s Wet Bar area for registration and fitting of wetsuits and snorkel gear. This part of the event proved to be both funny and frustrating at the same time! Getting people who have not used a wetsuit before, into a wetsuit can throw up some funny situations, particularly as to where one puts one’s hands in attempting to feed the body into the rubber suit. With all the gear sorted, masks, snorkels and fins in hand, the 15 intrepid first time snorkelers and seven dive crew made their way down to Q jetty and Balaton Jack, for the trip out to Little Island. After anchoring and laying out the float line behind the boat, a safety brief was held for the snorkelers before the dive crew assisted children and adults into the water. There were a few reluctant people who thought the water was a bit too deep, however with gentle persuasion, all snorkelers got in and enjoyed a good half hour of water activity. I must thank all the dive section members who volunteered for this duty, whose supportive nature and care for the ‘nervous nellies’ was admirable. All returned safely to HYC for a cup of hot coffee.

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm

Sharks and more sharks What sensible person would willingly want to dive with sharks without protection? The HYC dive section did just that on Sunday 30th April, at the northwest point of Rottnest Island, known as “The Shark Cave”. This is an area of open ocean ranging from 10 metres to 24 metres of water with a magnificent block of granite tilted up at a 45-degree angle from the sea floor, creating a cave like feel. Divers can settle onto the bottom or hang in mid water as grey nurse sharks [Ragged tooth shark] cruise around this cave area mingling with divers. This site gets dived reasonably frequently during the months of March April & May, which seems to be the aggregating period when these sharks visit this location, and the sharks do not seem to be too perturbed by divers visiting them. Bright light flashes or torch beams shone in their eyes will cause them to move off for a period, so thoughtless divers who transgress in this way can look forward to a very animated tongue lashing from a frustrated photographer. It is an amazing feeling to swim freely with an animal measuring upwards of 3.50 metres and weighing several hundred kilos, and to feel no fear. These animals are not dangerous to humans, even though as their name [ragged tooth] suggests, they do look very fearsome with their teeth hanging out of their mouths. This area of Rottnest is a complete no take zone and so to get some crayfish, divers will need to move outside the sanctuary zone. Thanks to Jon Tomkins and Ian Jones for the photos.

DINGHY

UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 4th Wed of the Month at 7.00pm

Action from the 2017 Pot of Gold

The Pot of Gold regatta in February is our major Dinghy event for the year with plenty of visiting Dinghy Classes and sailors. Although the hot day and light winds provided some challenging conditions on the race area to the west of the Boat Harbour, overall it was an excellent event. Our Summer Series races held on each Saturday, which continued to provide an enjoyable experience, concluded in early April. The last race day included the Commodore’s Cup due to it not being able to be sailed on the season Opening Day. Our Little Island Race was held in April with a handicap start from our launching ramp. The slower boats started first, followed by faster boats progressively starting to sail the course out to Little Island and returning to finish at the Club Tower on the north seawall. There were plenty of challenges including the gusty offshore winds and trying to be the first to finish. On our Volunteers’ Day in April, the usual race day A mixed Class race start at Pot of Gold 2017

volunteers try their hand at sailing and the sailors try their hand at race management, to again provide a fun and rewarding experience. During the next few months, Dinghy sailors and supporters can be involved in our Winter Series race days which commence on 10 June. Training activities will continue throughout the Winter to provide continued skills development and the opportunity to catch up with sailing friends. During September we have a Pre-Season Cocktail Party with the Keelboat and Cruising groups. Also our Dinghies and the Keelboats can take part in Hillarys’ part of Bart’s Bash which is the World’s biggest sailing event. All these activities will help prepare us for our weekly Summer Series race days which commence in October. Remember that sailing is a sport for life, so be a part of it.

Dinghy Presentation Night 2017 The Dinghy sailors, families and supporters had their Presentation Night on the evening of Sunday 28 May in the Marina Room. The celebrations included the summer race series, with a Club Champion awarded for each Class (type) of dinghy. The sailors in the Optimist Class, which is the entry type boat for juniors, received a participation medallion. There are many volunteers who help with the many tasks required to make a race day happen, and they received a recognition award. Chris Kelly and all the coaches were thanked for the many hours they have put into helping develop the sailing skills of everyone, especially the new

sailors. Acknowledgement and some awards were also given to several sailors for their endeavour and accomplishments in sailing activities, both at Hillarys and away, including Jackson Porter who placed 3rd at the Laser 4.7 Australian Championships in Adelaide. The annual awards included Most Active Junior, Encouragement Award, Most Improved, Myrv Nabbs Best Sportsman Award and the Best Club Person which was awarded to Deborah Fisk for the many ways she has supported the Division including regularly being the Race Officer and also as Dinghy Treasurer. ■ Greg Jennings, Dinghy Captain. KEELBOAT RACING

UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm

The latter part of the season was dominated by the ocean races in which yachts were tested with conditions ranging from storm-like at the finish of the Rottnest return race to insufficient wind causing abandonment of the Fairway race.

Rottnest Races Roric Smith on Surfer Rosa, a Pogo 12.5, excelled in the conditions on the outward journey to Rottnest taking line honours by nine minutes. On the return journey, after a night of Club celebrations, the yachts tacked their way back to the coast in a frustrating, variable easterly before being hit with the storm front. Thankfully all made it to the safety of the Club before the rain bucketed down. Overall in division one, Perle was first on handicap followed by First Impression and Sally Malay. In division two, Show Me took the honours with Covert Operation and Pandora filling the minor places. Comfortably Numb was first in division three with Sensei and Catabatic second and third.

Mindarie Races With spinnakers flying, the yachts set sail in a moderate and fluky south-easterly breeze for a quick run up the coast. Picking the wind shifts and deciding which side of Burns Beach rocks to sail were key to the fortunes of many. Mark Pitt was more than pleased to have Mulberry’s mast up and ready for the Mindarie race and celebrated with line honours in division one. In the return race a tacking duel in division one between Deckchairs Overboard, Dart Vader and Perle continued right to the finish line with the three boats finishing in that order a minute apart. Overall results went to Perle, Sandrine and Hard Evidence in division one; Helga, Pandora and Covert operation in division two and Sana II won from Sensei and Catabatic in division three.

24 Compass June 2017 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc

Fairway Race The race was postponed to early May and the very light winds, which dwindled further, left yachts languishing well short of the finish line when the race was abandoned at 5.20pm.

Keel Dinner In May, the Harbour Room was packed with crews, family and friends to celebrate the Keelboat racing season with the presentation of trophies in twenty one categories ranging from the Commodore’s Cup to Club Champion for 201617. A highlight was the respect shown during the slideshow celebrating the contribution of Chris Grant to HYC and the acclamation for the naming of the third consistency race of the season as the Chris Grant Memorial Race. Most Improved went to Bruce Ellery on Show Me; Crew Person of the Year was John Aldous on Perle; the Viking Championship was won by Helga (Mark Taylor); Dart Vader (Wayne Pitcher) took out the IRC Championship; the Overall Consistency went to Sensei (Brett Bailey), Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) and Perle (John Bird) in their respective divisions and the Club Champion for 2016-17 was Covert Operation. The wine auction raised $1150 for the Whitsunday Sailing Club that suffered damage at the hands of cyclone Debbie. ■ John Bird

Womens’ teams in the Interclub championships

State Interclub Championships No quarter was given, nor any spared, in this year’s hypercompetitive State Interclub Championships held on the Swan River. Three Hillary’s teams – Veterans, Women’s and Open took on the best that WA could throw at them with each team completing five windward-leeward races over a three hour time period in the Foundation 36 yachts. The Hillarys contingent took on crowded start lines, new and strict on-water judging and penalty regimes, and a breadth of sailing conditions with winds from dead calm to 20 knots over a short 800m course. Although registering an eighth out of nine entrants overall, Hillarys’ 23 intrepid representatives came within four points of achieving a mid-fleet result. Certainly no cause for embarrassment and saying plenty about potential, in particular the Hillarys’ Women’s team which suffered gear failure while sitting strongly in second place. A highlight for this year was HYC’s Youth Squad which aggressively tackled both national and international sailors in the Open event. Managed by Graham Atkinson, the crew comprised Marcel Masque (skipper), Rian Conboy, Marcus Fisk and Nick Willis, combined with the seasoned experience of Graham, Marshall Fox and Ryan Keefe.

Ladies’ Championships After the Interclub event, the HYC Women’s team took part in the highly competitive Women’s Keelboat State Championships, held at East Fremantle Yacht Club. The river was a welcome challenge for us ocean sailors, with tidal effects, jetties and moored yachts as obstacles on the course! The team came 8th, last in position but with moments of brilliance that kept the team fighting to the bitter end. It was a compelling drama on the water with a sequel yet to follow. In closing, “Success is not measured by what you accomplish, but by the opposition you have encountered, and the courage with which you have maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds.” – Orison Swett Marden ■ Des Riley with Sarah Liddiard and Deb Fisk

CRUISING IN COMPANY

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm SEPT 23, 24, 25: Stark Bay

Mindarie Cruise 6th May Seven yachts cruised to Mindarie leaving Hillarys in a light Easterly on or about 9.30am. The wind soon picked up to a 10 to 15 knot East North Easterly, allowing everybody to arrive at Mindarie nice and early. We were joined by two couples who came by road. The staff at the Boat Restaurant had lunch tables ready and were very welcoming. Unfortunately, one of the sailing guests had a fall and injured his forehead. The manager of the Boat Restaurant, Jill, with Rita Buzzard and another staff member, Lexie, treated the “patient” who soon recovered and later sailed with us back to Hillarys. He was OK next day and very thankful for the tender care and treatment he had received. After a very relaxing and pleasant lunch we were able to cruise back to Hillarys Harbour in a moderate Sou-westerly, all arriving on or about 4.30pm, finishing a lovely day out on the water. ■ Geoff & Rita James

Mandurah Easter Cruise 2017 Banco departed Hillarys for Mandurah at 1pm Thursday because of a more favourable forecast. We needn’t have bothered as we had head winds all the way and never got to turn the engine off. Winds were southerly, 5 to 10 knots, 160 to 180 deg. Those who left on the Friday had similar conditions although some were able to get in some sailing without the engine. We had 6 boats attending. On Good Friday evening we had fish and chips at Sharkys, a table having been booked in advance. They are licensed and meat dishes were also available. On Saturday we held a cocktail party and were fortunate that Nick made his entertainment area on board “Eaglehearts” available. John’s secret recipe for champagne cocktails once more proved a great success. We then had dinner at Mandurah Yacht Club (MOFSC) and the evening was enjoyed by all. On Easter Sunday, Panache and Banco made the trip to Dawesville Cut and tied up alongside. The two crews had an enjoyable lunch on board Panache. The sailing there and back was great and helped make up for the slow trip down. Dinner that night was at the Oceanic Bar and Grill. Monday saw the return sail to Hillarys with winds of 16 to 25 knots from the South (SSE to SSW) and Banco made the trip in 8 hrs. which was a record for us. It was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. ■ John and Norman, Banco.

Cruising in Company Dinner, May 2017 The installation of the new Cruising in Company Captains, the naming of the Cruiser of the Year and the results of the photo competition were some of the highlights at the end of season dinner held in Reflections in May. Elected at the recent meeting, Geoff and Rita James accepted the mantle of responsibility of Captains with the handover of the traditional Treasure Chest from the retiring Captains John and Sue Bird who in return received the gift of a clock for their services over the past two years. The peoples’ choice of John Carver and Norm Magill (Banco) for Cruiser of the Year was a popular one. Kurt and Mayumi Willi cleaned up in the photo competition winning 4 of the 5 categories and the Peoples’ Choice too with a stunning sunset photo of yachts in the bay. Thanks go to Tony from Churchill Color Laboratories for acting as judge. Door prizes, games of Bow and Stern, a recital of Duncan from Donegal by Norm, and a season slideshow of highlights capped off a memorable evening made all the more special by the delicious three course meal; our thanks to the chef and the staff.

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Wed of the Month at 7.00pm June 18: Boat Fishing Competition

HYC goes to Rottnest

July 12: Section Meeting and AGM

Hillary’s Yacht Club held their annual “HYC goes to Rottnest” event which was a wonderful day. The weather was hot, the beer cold and the day was well attended by Fishing Club Anglers. Everyone had a great time with the added bonus that John Farnham and Daryl Braithwaite were preforming that weekend. We are looking forward to the event next year!

July 16: Boat Fishing Competition August 20: Boat Fishing Competition August 26: Team Fishing Competition

Juniors’ Fishing Clinic Once again HYC held a successful Juniors clinic with 12 kids participating in the February School Holidays. Several species were caught: Flathead, Herring, Skippy and Whiting and the winner was Isaac James with 3 species (total points 35.29). Euan Johnson came second, also with 3 species (35.09 points) followed in third place by Cayde Stadek with 2 species (25.60 points). We encourage all members with kids to join in the Juniors Fishing Clinic where they will learn how to tie knots, casting, bait selection/presentation etc. And most importantly, how to catch fish!

Beach Competition April Winners - Men’s Aiden Rinney 34.90 points includes a new record Salmon of 4.70kg, second 17.46 points and Third Ron Thornton with 17.23 points, Ladies – Michele Campbell 17.31 points and second Ruby McGrady 17.22 points.

AAA WA State Boat Titles HYC participated in the AAA fishing competition located in Mandurah and three teams were entered. The Men’s team consisted of John Campbell, Alan & Ryan McDiarmid, Lucas Pohl; Aiden Rinney and Jake Speed; the Ladies team of Michele Campbell and Ruby McGrady; Veterans team of Ian McCall, Peter McGrady and Alan Partridge. Ian McCall drove Balaton Jack from HYC to Mandurah, with Crew Ruby and Peter McGrady, the day before ready to the start the competition on time. Unfortunately the fishing Gods weren’t kind that day and on a miserable wet and windy day with strong 20+ knots and up to 4 metre swells, the teams headed out to catch fish. Fish were scarce in these conditions and a few competitors laid low on the sick bed. However, at the end of the day, the ladies team were rewarded with Ruby McGrady winning the overall Ladies section with Michele Campbell runner up. Well done Ladies! Ian and the crew returned the following day with up to 5 metre swells reported. Well done Ian for getting the Balaton Jack and crew back safely to HYC.

Boating Fishing Competition The March fishing competition was cancelled due to inclement weather and the usual alternative day was canceled due to clashing with the AAA competition day. The April fishing competition went ahead with some excellent fish caught and records broken with the men’s winner Frank Pierucci with 9 species 8.9kg (126.8 points) and Jake Speed second with 5 species 5.37kg (66.7 points) Ron Thornton 3rd 0.98kg (35.9 points). The Ladies Winner Ruby McGrady 1.06kg (36.13 points) and second: Julie Loran with 0.800kg (35.6 points)

HYC Harbour Classic The annual HYC Harbour Classic was held in glorious conditions with 64 boats and 173 competitors heading out to try and catch the heaviest fish from 14 species with some great fish caught. Congratulations to HYC members Ruby McGrady (Whiting 0.242kg), Allan McDiarmid (Tuna 1.54kg), Jake Speed (Garfish 0.168kg), Paul Hickey (Herring 0232kg) and Eric Re (King George Whiting 0.965kg). All winners collected prizes of Rod/Reels/Printers up to the value of $1,600. The best Junior, Brodie McQuat, caught a nice pink Snapper (2.90kg) and one of the unluckiest members, John Campbell, was pipped by just two grams for a prize!

Easter Raffle The annual Easter Raffle organised by the Angling section was won by Peter Johnson, a member of the Angling section. Well done Peter! The annual raffle raises funds for the Angling section and a big thank you to all that donated prizes and bought raffle tickets. Keep supporting next year’s raffle!

Records Broken Aiden Rinney broke the club record with a 4.07kg Salmon in the April Beach competition, beating the previous record held by Frank Pierucci. However, this was short lived as Frank Pierucci caught a 5.270kg Salmon in the April Boat competition. Well done guys and better luck next time Aiden - let’s not forget that catching a 4.07kg Salmon from the beach is a great achievement!

POWER

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm

After an unusual start to the 2017 Rottnest season (weather-wise) we finally saw conditions which were perfect for power boating with small seas and gentle breezes but, even then, they were intermittent and most skippers had to take advantage when they could. The Power Section's final event before the winter was a twilight cruise which was organised for mid May. Weather has been so unpredictable this year that, just four days before the event, we were still trying to improve on 30

To enjoy the last of the light we all pulled into the bay beyond the marina and enjoyed a peaceful time with motors off before returning to pens and moving into the Wet Bar. The BBQ in Pinky's was a great success and the whole event was enjoyed by those who took part. Huge thanks are due to the skippers who not only took out their boats but even allowed all the rest of us aboard. The final tally of those taking part one way or another was 107 - a grand turn out.

participants. As "Seabreeze" reports improved, so did the numbers and the day before the event we had 80 people booked. We turned up at the allotted time to find two large catamarans rafted up on the VIP jetty. As more people arrived it became clear that several had turned up without booking and that we would have to find space for over a hundred. Places were juggled, boats filled and, at shortly after four o'clock, the Commodore lead us from the harbour and eight large power boats started on their way down the coast. With little breeze and almost no swell we made our way down the shoreline past Scarborough. The pace was a stately rather than brisk (pretty quick though for the stick boaties) 8 knots with the occasional sprint from one or two..... All too soon it was time to turn and make our way back, but despite the almost magical conditions, we were robbed of a 'proper' sunset by cloud and the smoke haze.

The next few Section events will be on land and will include a weekend away, Smokie’s Disco and the Pirate Raid, details of which are being finalised. Watch notice boards, Facebook and emails for details in the near future. A final note - remember that Power Section meetings are held at 7:30pm on the third Wednesday of each month. All are welcome to attend, whether boat owners or not. I hope you all winter well and I look forward to seeing you in the club enjoying the spectacular views and very special facilities that HYC has to offer.
