COMMODORE’S REPORT It never ceases to amaze me how quickly time flies. Already the sensational extended summer season we just enjoyed is now a distant but fond memory. Over this period, HYC held several functions, promotions and events, some showcasing new concepts and platforms for members to participate in Club activities both on and off the water. Proudly, I can say the volume of members participating in Club events over summer reached record rates. As we batten down the hatches for what is proving to be a stormy winter, members can rest assured, the Club doesn’t go into lock down! Several exciting events are planned and hopefully no change in the weather will dampen members’ enthusiasm. So make sure you keep your eye on club marketing and don’t miss out !!!

DIRK HARTOG I recently had the pleasure to go aboard the STS Leeuwin 11 to attend the launch of “The Dirk by Sea”. This event marks the 400th year anniversary of the landing of Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog on the WA island. Starting in Fremantle on the 15th October, skippers and their crew will set sail for Denham in what should be an epic yacht race and fun re-enactment of the Dirk Hartog Landing October 25. If you are keen to participate contact FSC or SOPYC for further details.

NEW MEMBERS The 2016 New Members Night was held in April with our Rear Commodores giving a short presentation of their respective section offerings. This informative night also provides the opportunity for new members to fully understand the activities they can participate in whilst enjoying a very casual social atmosphere. I look forward to possibly a revamped format for next year.

TWILIGHT CRUISE The Power Section recently hosted a “Twilight Cruise” which saw over 80 members enjoy an absolutely stunning sunset whilst slowly cruising down to Scarborough aboard several club members boats. Upon returning to the Club and on dry land we all converged at Pinky’s Wet Bar for a BBQ and a few quiet drinks! This is a great event and I thoroughly recommend members register early when the next similar occasion is planned.

SHAVE FOR A CAUSE Member and friend Gabrielle Gomez shaved off his most famous locks, including a very full beard for “Shave for a Cause”. I take my hat off to him; he raised over $5,000 for Leukemia research, so many thanks to the many members that donated.

HARBOUR CLASSIC The “sign on” team and volunteers from Dinghy ensured most of the anglers got off to a good start. A well organised start package along with a breakfast burger and a hot coffee saw the anglers head out to sea at sunrise with their sights set firmly on securing a winning catch come presentation time. The Marina room was perfectly set up for the ‘weigh in’ and what was lost on the standard of dress was certainly made up by the sheer numbers of members and guests attending. Additionally, Master of Ceremonies Garry Cunningham maintained the vibe in the room at an elevated level all afternoon, keeping everybody in good spirit and ready for the formal presentation. Thanks to club sponsors who ensured there was no shortage of prizes. The competitors, their families, volunteers and staff made this one of the best Harbour Classics ever and a very proud day for our Club.

YWA AWARDS I recently had the opportunity to attend the YWA Yachting Awards and was pleased and delighted to see Nick Willis acknowledged by YWA for his achievement in becoming the Junior World Champion (Taser Helm) late last year. Nick is also the current Australian Junior Champion and is in excellent company with his father Graeme as crew. We wish them the best of luck for future events.

QUIZ NIGHT It’s been a while since the Club ran a quiz night and so it was a great opportunity to combine some fun with supporting junior member Laura Carmichael to fundraise for her upcoming European tour with the Junior Exchange Sailing Scheme (JESS). Through the generosity of sponsors, suppliers and some kindhearted members, there was no shortage of prizes and items for auction and thanks to Danny Rechichi for a great job as quiz master and thus ensuring the sellout night was a huge success.

PIRATE RAID ON CLAREMONT I am delighted to report 30+ HYC members clad in their best pirate attire successfully raided Claremont Yacht Club and managed to return to the safety of our Club with no loss of limb or life. The treasure chest and its contents of gold and other valuables taken from Claremont Yacht Club are now secured under lock and key at HYC. On behalf of all those who attended I thank Claremont Yacht Club for their outstanding hospitality and the awesome show they hosted.

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

ROTTNEST RUN It wasn’t just the usual suspects who made their way to Rottnest for the 2016 HYC Rottnest Run. As expected, it was a great success with members from across the entire section spectrum gathering for a massive Club get-together at the pub, many of who danced the night away to the live band. Thanks to PK Constructions and Jeff at Peard for digging deep to sponsor the event.

AAA On Saturday 9th March I joined our HYC Angling team for the weigh in at the annual AAA State Boat Angling Championships hosted by Lancelin Angling and Aquatic Club. Whilst our anglers enjoyed varying degrees of success, LAAC put on an excellent show which given the conditions that weekend, made the drive up there all worth it.

INDONESIAN EXPERIENCE The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism recently ran an event in our Harbour Room to present the updated Sea-Tourism regulations for foreign yachts and ships visiting Indonesian sea territories. Indonesian Consul General Ade Padmo Sarwono attended the night and like all the guests and members, enjoyed the very informative evening with guest speakers sharing with us their insight into the abundant opportunities associated with sailing to Indonesia. The beautiful meal generously provided by our Indonesian friends capped off another fabulous night at the Club. Thanks to Ratna Hartoyo of Easy Event Perth Pty Ltd who put the function together. The evening was a great success and I hope some of our more adventurous members can participate in the sailing rally to Indonesia in June-August 2017

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

PARTICIPATE IN EVENTS The events I have highlighted in this report represent just a few of the ways in which members have participated and relished in their membership over the last few months. Watch out for other exciting opportunities on offer within the club and don’t forget to invite your friends to enjoy the HYC bar and dining experience.

FINANCIAL On a financial note, the Club ended our reporting year (1st May to April 30th) with a reasonable result and it was pleasing to see the positive outcome given the very tough trading conditions. In comparison to similar clubs we are doing very well and can be very proud of our reputation for the extraordinary value for money the Club represents. To remain a very affordable family orientated Club we need to continue to grow and retain our membership base and most importantly increase patronage. Growth in these two areas will reduce the pressure on our annual subscription to cover our ever increasing costs. And so with this, I challenge every member not only to make HYC their first choice for social outings but to go a little further and introduce your friends and colleagues to our little piece of paradise. Obviously income from the fuel facility, an active functions program and other initiatives will greatly improve our financial position but at the end of day “bums on seats” is a “win win” for everyone. Maybe consider holding your next big event at HYC. I sincerely hope to see you around and being active in the Club.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT MEMBER CHARGE CARD and ACCOUNT Now we have begun a new year at the Club and renewal of membership is due, it is relevant to advise members of the benefits of using your membership charge card. As you are aware, all members are required to pay a quarterly food and beverage levy. Once the levy is paid, these monies become available to you to use when purchasing food or beverages at the Club with your card. Any levy monies, if not utilised, will expire on the 30th April each year. Members also have the ability to top up their card by depositing additional monies into their wallet account so additional funds can be available when using the card. Wallet monies do not expire and remain on the members card until used. If members prefer, rather than topping up their wallet account, they can utilise the credit account on their card which is available to all members: Each membership has the ability to have additional monies available using the credit limit attached to their card. The Club allows and applies a $50 credit limit to all membership cards, so members can have the ability to exceed their levy and wallet accounts when visiting or entertaining guests at the Club. Depending on their use and the amount spent when visiting the Club, many members have requested larger credit limits, which the Club does allow dependent upon and conditional to the payment history of the member and the account being settled promptly at the end of each month. Members also have the ability to ‘opt out’ of having the credit facility attached to their card. If you wish

6 Compass June 2016 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc

not to have the credit limit attached to your card, it is important you advise the Club of your choice. These 3 facilities: levy, wallet and credit, are attached to your membership card. Food and beverage purchases are deducted from these accounts in the same order, levy first, wallet second and, if attached, then credit. You can use your card whenever attending the Club and this will ensure all your food and beverage usage is registered and recognised with the implementation of the new loyalty rewards program introduced this year.

MEMBER LOYALTY It remains true that the more a member attends the Club, the more they save and benefit from their membership. Each quarter, loyalty rewards by way of additional funds, will be deposited into the wallet of membership accounts which have been used regularly and achieved loyalty reward levels. The first distribution of loyalty rewards will be applied on 31 July following the first quarter of our year. We look forward to seeing members use their cards as often as possible to be eligible for the loyalty rewards.

AROUND THE CLUB Events planned for the winter months have begun strongly with Mothers Day well attended and nearly 750 people enjoying time with family on the special day. Our ‘All that Glitters is Gold’ Commodores Ball is in June and filling fast, then Christmas in July and Smokies Disco in August, Fathers Day and the Sailing Cocktail Party in September, Opening Day in October ready for summer and Melbourne Cup the first Tuesday in November. Sounds like a busy calendar and plenty to do, doesn’t it? In between all these larger events, our restaurants, bars and Sunday live music days are still available as usual. Additional social events are still being planned, in and outside the Clubhouse and Wet Bar, all of which

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

will be advertised through our regular E-news email distribution and notices. Keep an eye out for these events so you can attend with family and friends.

Inter Club Championships

Hillarys back in the ring after a long absence

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

It was a case of no quarters given when Hillarys threw its hat into the ring against Perth’s Swan River clubs at the twenty fifth state Inter Club Sailing Championships in April. After a 15 year absence, Hillarys sailors comprising veterans, womens and open teams discovered how quickly the on-shore bon homme evaporated as rival teams from Royal Perth and Freshwater Bay, along with South of Perth and Fremantle clubs, got down to the serious business of defending local honour and pride. Running over three days from the Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, the eight-race windward-leeward regatta is conducted in Swan River Racing’s popular Foundation 36 match racing yachts. Indeed, the HYC squad of blue water aficionados faced off against some formidable and experienced Foundation 36 sailors, among which were three former America’s Cup crew members, at least four world title holders and three national champions. Work on Hillarys title tilt, which was generously supported by the Club, began in August last year when 26 sailors nominated to crew. After some whittling back, a squad of 19 was announced with training commencing in January at Hillarys before moving on to the Swan River-based Foundation 36 yachts prior to the regatta. In tricky zephyr-like breezes and the unfamiliar waters off RFBYC, both the veterans and womens teams, confidently helmed by Ron Marian and Deborah Fisk, put in solid first and second day efforts

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

to place Hillarys in fourth spot overall. Day three started beneath bleak overcast skies and gusty winds swinging regularly between north-east and south-east on the Melville waters venue. Unfortunately, after a determined first race challenge by skipper Bill Gilbert and crew, things came unstuck thanks to a troublesome spinnaker (aren’t they always?) in the second of the morning’s races, thus delaying any immediate move up the league ladder. The final two open races saw river club skippers and crew move into overdrive as evidenced by a start line fracas more akin to a Saturday night pub brawl. Recognising the need to get boat and crew home in one piece, this correspondent headed for a midline start and the opportunity to fleetingly harass the Fremantle team – regrettably to no avail as indicated by the fifth place in race 8. As noted by Club handicapper, Gary Illing, Hillarys put in a competitive effort judged by its finishing times relative to the overall fleet. Certainly noticeable was the fact that all four crews gave their all in what is one of the sport’s more demanding competitive formats. So we might not have brought home the silverware, but like all journeys, we took our initial step and judging by the Hillarys post-race get together, it was potentially the first of many. ■ Des Riley

MOTHER’S DAY Whilst Mums all over the world deserve recognition every day, Mother’s Day gives us the perfect excuse to bring the family together and enjoy a meal at the Club! Certainly for our members, this year was no exception with over 700 people celebrating Mother’s Day at HYC, enjoying sumptuous buffets for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The tables were set to treat Mum, decked out in purple trim and flower centrepieces completing the occasion. Breakfast diners enjoyed the ‘pop-opera’ styles of Jay Weston to set the tone while the lunchtime sitting were treated to entertainment by Barry Gee and Mr Fumbles for the kids! Kevin Conway rounded off a busy day, setting a relaxed atmosphere for those treating Mum to dinner at the Club. Congratulations to Darren Mullooly, Beverley Warrall and Alison Hunt who were randomly drawn to each win a $200 hair styling voucher from Living Colour!

Brian Buzzard

Brian celebrated 69 years of life on Christmas Day 2015 alongside family! Brian and his wife Rita joined HYC in 2008 with the purchase of SANA II, their first yacht.

Family Background Born in Northam, WA, Brian moved to Perth to attend Aquinas College before two years of National Service as a conscript led to a “free trip” to Vietnam as an infantry soldier. Wounded in action and evacuated, he eventually returned to Australia to begin his teaching degree, where he met Rita. Both held impressive roles in their respective teaching careers and are now enjoying retirement with their five children and 12 grandchildren.

Yacht & Achievements Brian and Rita crewed for David Swain (now at HYC) on “Liquid Asset” at South Perth for three years. The help and training by David was the confidence and experience needed to purchase their own yacht. They acquired SANA II seven years ago and have participated in both Keel and Cruising sections ever since! SANA II performs very well in the JAM races if there is a bit of wind, having achieved wins to and from Rottnest, being well placed in the Consistency Series (in most years) and winning the 2016 Cruiser Cup. Brian and Rita served as Cruising Captains for three years and enjoyed the support and company of some wonderful people in the group. They support the ‘crossing over’ between sections and have felt very comfortable in both Cruising and Keel groups.

Regrets Not being a member sooner, even before we had SANA II. We like fishing, diving, riding bikes, sailing, cruising, meeting new people, going out for dinner and dancing. You can do all that right here at HYC with or without a boat. We may have been slow to learn this, so now we are making up for lost time. Thank you HYC.

HYC Perspective Brian and Rita have found that joining HYC offers a whole range of different experiences that they would never have enjoyed outside. The friendships, the relaxed atmosphere of Pinky’s Wet Bar after a race or return trip from Rottnest. The restaurants and function rooms are ideal for formal and informal meetings, dinners, anniversaries, weddings and wakes. The dance lessons on Monday nights started them on a journey of dancing for pleasure with practice on Friday music nights. These, and the help of all the staff and volunteers like Rob Sweet, make HYC a pleasant place to come to, be around and stay awhile.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT Our Summer Sailing Season has now come to a close. Our growth in numbers sailing has continued this year in both the Dinghy and Keel Divisions. CIC has had a number of very successful cruises during the season. We now look forward to the winter series commencing on the second week of June. We encourage all to participate in these fun events. The Dinghy and Keel events are conducted on the same weekend to allow our members to do other pursuits fortnightly. The Rottnest Run was held on April 30. There was tremendous support from all of the sections. The Keel Division conducted their Ocean races with at least 10 Dinghy sailors aboard the 21 Keel boats competing. Whilst the conditions were predominantly light winds, the race committee adjusted the courses to allow the majority of the boats to complete the races by just after 2pm. Ashore, the sailors were greeted by members of the Angling, Dive and Power sections who assisted in the celebrations. MC Danny and Commodore Simon both shared the importance and success of this annual weekend with the 250 members present in the marquee. There were numerous winners on the day including the State Championship arm wrestling. The past 3 months have been very busy for the Training department. A 25% increase in Training in this period has made this a successful time. The

14 Compass June 2016 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc

development in the schools’ programs has been very encouraging. We do encourage members who are interested in training opportunities to share your needs. Recently, we have assisted 3 who are to sail a yacht from Europe to Hillarys that required an HF radio licence. The new course we have been promoting this year has been the National Power Boating certificate. This is the next level after the RST and includes a large emphasis on passage planning. At the beginning of the year we commenced conducting TACKERS Training for 7-12 year olds. This was supported with HYC attendance at the Hillarys Boat Show, where over 500 participated in the YWA Tackers promotion. We are networking with these Tackers kids to bring them closer to Hillarys Yacht Club. It is envisaged that some of these will be seen around the Club in the near future. Annually, we visit our Club Risk Management documentation. We have had a need each year to update the documentation and the training. This is scheduled for June and will include all sections and divisions. Some sections have achieved a tremendous reduction in incidents as a result of the training provided. ■ Chris Kelly Below: Young sailors take to the water to try HYC’s Tackers course at Hillarys Boat Show

DIVE

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm

Are we there yet? ARE WE THERE YET? The familiar cry of the weary passenger. After 1,100 plus kilometres, three cars, two boats, six people, yes, we finally arrived at Coral Bay. While the majority of our dive section headed off to Rotto for the weekend to participate in the annual HYC Rotto run, six hardy souls ventured north to try our hand at angling. Andy Cassidy with his ANDICAT [a 6.5 metre cat], Steve and June Sullivan, James and Alana Leesue [with a 6 metre centre console Southwind] and our son in law Chris Dobby, arrived in Coral Bay on Saturday the 31st April. As is normal in Coral Bay, we were greeted with howling winds which did not bode well for the next week, but undeterred we headed off to the pub for dinner and to make our plans. Sunday morning was not much different as far as the wind goes, but we did not come all this way to just to sit around and become grumpy, so the 4 men decided to do some inside the reef fishing. I had never navigated a vessel up here so an exercise in navigating the channel markers was a good plan and if we were able to wet a line outside the marine park, so much the better. Andy, who had been up here before with other members of the dive/some time anglers, suggested we try the spot he had named as “The Prostate Watch” [PW]. So called because on a previous trip, a diver whose anonymity will be maintained by calling him Bwana, whilst complaining about his personal ailments, brought on a big bite of Spangled Emperor. So off we went and we had a wonderful time casting unweighted mulies into a hungry school of said fish. Catch and release was practised, only keeping a couple for dinner. The Wind Fishing Gods tempted us and by mid-morning the wind had backed off and we were outside the reef with a spread of lures working for us. The real Fishing Gods were not with us however, so we resorted to wetting baits and drifting. The wind continued to pick up and did it blow! There was no way a 2kg sinker was going to hold bottom, so back to the house and back to the pub. Meanwhile, back in Perth, the rest of the dive crew were having a ball at the HYC Rotto weekend. Michael O`Brien won the crazy golf challenge and the wine, while wife Judy achieved the only hole in one. Go Girl! Monday was better, so out to the PW again and we threw berley at the fish and bugger me if the bloody anchor rope broke on Andicat, so after marking the spot on the GPS we headed back to the pub.

20 Compass June 2016 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc

On Tuesday, we dived and retrieved the anchor and after finishing our dive at Asho`s Gap, we went back out to the outside of the reef to try wetting a bait again and this time we were on. June caught a lovely 4kg trevally, which gave her the run around of the deck. The Fossil crew caught a respectable number of Red Throat Emperor and dinner tonight is being prepared by the Fossils. Plans will be made tonight to go out wide and deep tomorrow as the winds are looking good. We are targeting BIG Rankin Cod Red Emperor. As this article needs to be in at HYC for Tuesday evening, I will have to continue with our adventures into the next Compass. Also apologies for no photos of all the lies I have and am about to tell you, as technology has got the better of the old dusty Fossil at this stage. Hold those fishy thoughts for the next two months and I will reveal all on the next instalment. ■ James Leesue Rear Commodore Diving

SAILING Another season of Summer Series sailing has come to an end with the final keel race to Rottnest and Return as part of the Hillarys goes to Rottnest weekend. Keelboat racing at HYC has had tremendous growth this year commencing with a successful Winter Series where 25 boats were taking part. This has rolled over into summer with growth of approximately 10% in boat numbers this year which is incredibly pleasing given the total boats registered is now 38 in total. Bart and his committee have done an excellent job for keelboat racing at HYC and my thanks to them for a great job. My personal thanks to Bart for being part of the Sailing Committee representing keelboat interests. Cruising in Company has also flourished this year with every more successful meeting/dinner evening each month. Twenty for dinner then 30 for the meeting that follows is a fantastic effort and the talks have been great. The opening meeting jokes are not to be missed and have acquired “tradition” status. Interest in cruising is growing and the experiences of others shared at Cruising meetings provide an level of enthusiasm of others to venture further than local waters. Thanks go to John and Sue for an excellent year and I have appreciated their hospitality at meetings and the conviviality of the members of Cruising in Company. I wish to offer my personal thanks for Johns’ participation on Sailing Committee to speak for CIC. Dinghy Division continues to grow with this summer seeing the introduction of a two handed trapeze boat – the National 125 being given life by Jonathon Pang’s interest in increasing the sailing options for our young and probably some not so young sailors. Tackers is an initiative which I am pleased to have introduced at HYC – where younger sailors are introduced to the fabulous sport of sailing in a fun way. Quite a number of our sailors have gained instructor qualifications and that is a terrific position HYC can use to develop junior sailing still further. Greg and his committee have done a wonderful job this year for dinghy sailing and in other less obvious but important ways around the Club. I have enjoyed working with Greg on the Sailing Committee and towards the betterment of sailing at HYC in general and I thank him for that. Finally a comment on the Aquatics Manager Chris Kelly. I wish to thank Chris for all that he does at HYC and it is a significant job he does. As RC Sailing, sometimes we have issues from time to time but Chris works for HYC to enhance the on-water activities for our members and he is passionate about that and I understand his enthusiasm. Thanks Chris for what you do and sharing your experience with me.

I wish all Divisions an enjoyable break between seasons – The Winter Series is not that far away and I wish HYC sailors a great time on the water whatever their boat. ■ Brett Bailey Rear Commodore Sailing

KEELBOAT RACING

UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm

Pot of Gold and Dash for Cash There was success for double-handed sailors in the POG with Ryan Binedell skippering Low Flying Duck into first place with Kraken 4th and Dart Vader 6th. In division three Mulberry was first and fastest and Bad Habits was 5th. In the Dash, Hard Evidence sailed to a first and fastest in Division One ahead of Salamander and Vaya Con Dios. In Division Two, Covert Operation was first and fastest with Helga and Pandora filling the minor places. Brian Buzzard on Sana II in Division Three was first and fastest ahead of Comfortably Numb.

Ladies Skippers’ Race On Valentines Day the men showed their respect for the ladies by giving up the position of skipper for the day in the annual Ladies Skippers’ Race. The 13 knot south-easterly pushed Sally Malay to the front going on to score a first and fastest in Division One for skipper Sarah Liddiard. Chasing them all the way was Hard Evidence, skippered by Gail Riley whilst Marie Conboy on Sandrine finished third. In Division Two it was another first and fastest with Sue Osborne on Zinfandel taking the honours closely followed by Rebecca Ratkovcic on HYC Training and Deborah Fisk on Blue Chip.

Man Overboard In Division One, Ryan Binedell on Low Flying Duck, was fastest in the light and shifting westerly however

12 June: Winter Series commences

everything went right for Murphy’s Law and they won by three seconds. Third was Hard Evidence. A recent real “MOB” retrieval proved invaluable practice for second division winner Pinta; Show Me and Zinfandel were the minor placegetters. In Division Three a win to Panache over Sana II kept the Cruiser Cup alive.

Ocean Races In the Fairway Race, Mark Pitt on Mulberry set a cracking pace for the Division One fleet going on to win by 20 minutes. Dean Giraudo on Murphy’s Law was unlucky to finish just 36 seconds behind Mulberry on handicap with Hard Evidence third. In Division Two Mark Taylor (Helga) sailed well to win easily on handicap from the fastest finisher Pinta and Show Me. It was first and second for the catamarans, Sally Malay and Out the Back in the Hillarys to Mindarie and return races. Dart Vader and Perle each had a third placing. In Division Two, Covert Operation was first and fastest with Sublime and Pandora not far behind. In the return race Mark Taylor steered Helga home for a win and Kevin Stacey (Pinta) kept Pandora at bay by just 15 seconds. Covert Operation was fastest again. A duel between Catabatic and Panache in Division Three ended with the same result in both races: Catabatic fastest but Panache first on handicap. Pandora, Covert Operation, Tropical Itch and Helga returning from Rottnest

The much anticipated showdown between two contenders in the Rottnest and Return Ocean races between Sally Malay and Mulberry disappointed with light conditions favouring Mulberry who went on to score first and fastest in both races. Hard Evidence made the most of the fickle conditions for a second and a third placing whilst Jack Tar was second and fourth. In Division Two, Mark Taylor on Helga recorded a second and fourth placing to win the Ocean Series trophy for the division however he was under pressure from Show Me who scored a first and second place, Tropical Itch with a win and Pinta who had two fourth placings. Although fastest in both races, Covert Operation couldn’t overcome their handicap rating to score a pennant in the light conditions. Rob Bills (Catabatic) was happy with his first and fastest in both races in Division Three with Comfortably Numb second.

Keel Presentation Dinner The end of the season arrived and preparations were made for a gala Presentation Night on May 21st. A large crowd enjoyed dinner and danced to the music of band “No Direction”. Club Champion for 2015/16 and Overall Consistency winner in Division Two is Pinta, a fitting result for Club stalwart Kevin Stacey. Overall Consistency in Division One is Hard Evidence (Des Riley and Marshall Fox) and Catabatic (Rob Bills) in Division Three. The Cruiser Cup was won by Sana II (Brian and Rita Buzzard) and the Viking Championship by Pandora (Chris Grant). For all awards see the Keel section on the Club website. ■ John Bird

CRUISING IN COMPANY

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm Jun 19 - Burns Beach Breakfast Jul 3 - Wine Cruise Jul 14 - Games night

As the season draws to the close of another year, the CIC has welcomed several new members to our group, and is collectively looking forward to our end of year dinner and photo competition. The last few months have seen some great cruises with large turnouts. John & Sue organized another Rockingham cruise in March, which 8 yachts participated in, with Tina being lucky enough to have a close encounter with a dolphin in the bay whilst kayaking one morning. The land based events of the weekend were also well attended, with everyone enjoying 10 pin bowling and dinner at the TCYC amongst other activities. A few weeks later, John and Norm organized the Easter cruise to Mandurah, which was also very popular with 9 yachts participating. Dinner on Good Friday was had at Sharkys, followed on the Saturday night by a cocktail party, kindly hosted by Nick and Sylvia on Eaglehearts. After the cocktails, dinner was enjoyed by all at the Mandurah Yacht Club. Easter Sunday saw 3 of the yachts sail up to the Dawesville cut, where everyone enjoyed lunch on the boats, followed later that day by dinner back in Mandurah at Catch 22. The winds for this weekend were favourable for anyone willing to sail early in the day, and the weekend was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Each month the CIC hosts a guest speaker at our meeting. One of the highlights of this year’s guest speakers was the talk given recently by Kurt Willi about towing his trailer sailor (Mc Gregor) across Australia to sail in the waters of Tasmania. After arriving in Hobart with their “ocean caravan” on the ferry, Kurt and Mayumi took off on a sailing adventure that included sailing for 1 week in the waters of Strahan, Macquarie Harbour, & the Gordon River, followed by 3 weeks’ sailing in the waters surrounding Hobart, D’Entrecastaux Channel, Huon River and Bruni Island. The photos and narrative of their talk illustrated the distinct advantages of being able to tow your boat over land to reach places you might otherwise never get to sail! The trip looked like so much fun- who knows, maybe they have converted one or two members of the CIC from being staunch keel boat yachties to the benefits of the “trailer sailor”! And finally for this issue, the CIC was well represented at the Club’s annual HYC Rotto Run, with attendance by Phil & Tina; John & Marj; Ian, Cass & Lucy; Tony, Chris & Sue; and John & Sue Bird. ■ Fran and Robert Pagnacco

Cruiser of the Year At the Dinner we were pleased to present the trophy for Cruisers of the Year to very worthy winners, Geoff and Rita James who sail Panache. Geoff and Rita attended meetings, went on cruises, raced in the Cruiser Cup and gave a talk on their sailing/cycling adventure off Holland. The Cruiser Cup was won by Brian and Rita Buzzard on Sana II.

ANGLING

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Wed of the Month at 7.00pm Jun 19 - Boat Competition

FEBRUARY BEACH COMPETITION With very reasonable weather predicted for the competition period, it was disappointing that only 11 anglers signed on and only 6 weighed in their catch where just 6 species were represented, the best fish being a 1kg tailor caught by Jake Speed. Of the three juniors, Jake Speed was the winner with 3 species and 36.796 points from Lucas Pohl, 1 species, 17.706 points. It was a closer competition between the ladies with both Ruby McGrady and Jude Thornton weighing in one specimen; Ruby took the win with 17.966 points from Jude with 17.152 points. The men’s section was also close with both Neville Baker and Ron Thornton weighing in 2 species with Neville, the winner, scoring 25.718 points while Ron had 25.300 points.

FEBRUARY BOAT COMPETITION With the best forecast for some months, 18 anglers signed on for the competition, fishing from 5 boats. The weigh in proved to be very interesting with 14 species weighed in, including a club record goatfish of 927g caught by junior angler Aiden Rinney. Winner of the junior section was Jake Speed with 4 species and 47.976 points from Lucas Pohl, also with 4 species and 47.316 points, the main difference being Jake’s 1.366kg snook. The lady’s competition was also a close result with Ruby McGrady having 4 species (45.946 points); the winner from Julie Loran, 3 species and 35.376 points - Ruby’s 468g King George Whiting the main difference. In the highly competitive men’s section, the winner with 4 species was Peter McGrady (46.790 points) from Ron Malek, 4 species and 46.422 points and Alan Partridge, 4 species, 45.722 points. Wheel spin winner was Mick Contoulas with his Herring weighing 182g.

MARCH BOAT COMPETITION Held a week earlier than usual, on 13th March, owing to the AAA Competition at Lancelin, 14 anglers signed on with a forecast that was looking promising for a good day’s fishing but proved to be overly optimistic in the morning when the south easterly blew at around 20 knots, making conditions very bouncy. With Balaton Jack out of commission awaiting a manifold replacement, nine anglers fished from Mirage, thanks to Chris Kelly and the Dinghy section relinquishing their rostered use of Mirage. Junior winner again with 4 species and 49.002 points was Jake Speed from Lucas Pohl with 2 species and 25.900 points.

The Lady winner Aug 27 - TEAM FISH was Ruby McGrady, 2 species, 25.608 points, from Julie Loran, I species, 17.248 points. A more competitive men’s section saw Frank Pierucci win with his bag of 6 species, 74.162 points, from Nick Fitt, 4 species, 45.596 points. Wheel spin winner was Frank Pierucci with his 2.161kg pike.

HARD LUCK STORIES We all know that anglers are full of hard luck stories, but the sorriest we have heard for a while came from the March Section Meeting. Firstly, one member who hadn’t had his boat in the water this season owing to holidays and work commitments, decided to have a day on the water. On checking the boat, it was found that the two batteries needed replacing, the flares and fishing licenses were out of date and the gas inflatable lifejackets needed new gas capsules. After increasing the house mortgage to cover these costs, the boat was launched at dawn for the promised day’s fishing. Seven hours later, the party returned to shore with a total of one 350g skippy to show for their labours. Secondly, all felt for our secretary who was not at the Club on either of the two occasions in the past nine weeks that her name was drawn for the $500 prize.

AAA COMPETITION (LANCELIN) With the Club agreeing to Balaton Jack travelling to Lancelin, HYC was able to field three teams in this competition, Junior, Mens and Veterans. Crewed by Ian, Greg and Jake, Balaton left HYC on Friday for an uneventful trip north in reasonable sea conditions. With blustery, stormy conditions next morning, the nine anglers on Balaton Jack, as well as John Campbell and Mike Eliot in their boat, left full of anticipation for the day’s fishing. After moving to many different locations as recommended by the locals, many tangles, some rain and quite strong winds, all safely returned with few fish for the weigh in. At the weigh in, it was great to see so much support from HYC members including our Commodore. However, except for Greg Mansell with the largest flathead, there was no joy on the winners’ board for our teams. The Veterans team were ranked 7th with 33.9 points; the Men’s team ranked 22nd with 102 points and the Junior team was ranked third with 24.2 points. Mike Elliot with a bag weight of 4.25Kg had the best bag. Thanks to all who participated, the Club for the support and the dive section for the use of their dinghy.

APRIL BOAT COMPETITION An iffy forecast, with the threat of a storm, deterred some anglers. However, 12 hardy souls signed on to have a go. Most were sorry they did as the strong south easterly did not ease as promised and the seas remained around 2 metres for the day; the fish stayed hiding. At the weigh in, only six species were produced with no outstanding specimens. The Junior winner, with two species (26.040 points) was Lucas Pohl from Aiden Rinney, also two species and 25.456 points. Lady winner with one specie and 18.716 points was Julie Loran. The winner of the Men’s section was Eric Lay, with 3 Lucas Pohl takes another win species and 35.614 points, from Frank Pierucci, also 3 species and 35.332 points, while Brian Carter, with two species (25.776 points) was third. Winner of the mystery fish wheel spin was Frank Pierucci with a 373g pike.

JUNIOR ANGLERS’ FISHING CLINIC 16 junior anglers signed on for the three day school holiday fishing clinic with the prospect of good weather conditions for the duration. After introductions, safety briefings and an overview of fishing rules and techniques on the Tuesday, all set off on Balaton and Mirage on Wednesday. Fish were hard to find, although anglers on Balaton ran into a school of salmon and were able to land 4 using rigs prepared for whiting. Thursday is competition day and once again fish were hard to find with only five species weighed in, and only one junior, Zak Daws who had two species, declared the winner. Overall, a successful clinic with thanks to the volunteers from the Angling Section and Mel Harvey for the organisation.

www.hillarysyachtclub.com.au

HYC HARBOUR CLASSIC FISHING COMPETITION 174 anglers fishing from 50 to 60 boats signed in for the 2015 Harbour Classic competition. With seas described by some small boat anglers as like being in a washing machine with the easterly off shore wind blowing for most of the morning, conditions were far from perfect. However some very nice fish were presented at the weigh in, and all but two of the 14 species were represented, only Queen Snapper and Spanish Mackerel were missing. Many HYC members were fishing, but only one, Arthur Cossom remained on the winning species board with his 176g Garfish at the end of the weigh in. All in all, a very successful event with many thanks to the sponsors and the Angling Section volunteers who ensured everything ran smoothly.

2016 Harbour Classic Winning Fish

WEDNESDAY FISHING REPORT Most noticeable aspect of midweek fishing lately is the absence of Whiting. Any decent sized fish have been hard to find, reflected in the size of the winning Whiting in the AAA Competition and the Harbour Classic. Juvenile Flathead have been a nuisance, grabbing the bait as soon as it hits the bottom. Alan Partridge landed a very good flathead (estimated at about 2kg) a couple of weeks ago, but otherwise catches have been poor. ■ Brian Carter

MARINA FACILITIES

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 3rd Mon of the Month at 7.30pm

As winter approaches, regular inspections and correct winterising procedures of your vessel will reduce longterm issues or damage during unpredictable weather. Your inspections should include: • Ropes – Replace if frayed, including shackles and other mooring fittings • Weights – Report if missing or shackles are damaged • Battery Chargers – Check regularly and comply with Section 8 of the HYC Bylaws • Bilge Pumps – Check that they are working and the bilge is free of contaminants • Ventilation – Make sure it is adequate to avoid rot and mildew • Shore Power Leads – Check for any damage and it is clear of the water line Non-compliant shore power leads have once again emerged on several jetties and although the pen occupants have been notified, they continue to be used. Connection to the 240 volt single phase supply is via a 15amp 3-pin plug with an IP rating of IP56 (dust proof and weather proof to heavy seas force). Plug tops with an IP56 rating can be identified by the screwed locking ring. The locking ring must be screwed to the socket outlet to provide the required protection. 3-pin plugs with a rating of less than IP56 are not permitted. Supply leads must be heavy-duty flexible cords (complying with AS/NZS 3191 or AS/NZS 5000.1) with a minimum current rating of 15 amps. The maximum length must not exceed 25 metres and only one supply lead is to be connected to any socket outlet. The use of double adaptors or power boards is strictly prohibited. HYC has an obligation to ensure compliance and

reduce the risk to people and property so from 1 July 2016, all non compliant shore power leads found connected to shore power outlets WILL BE REMOVED and available for collection from the office. If you have fridges, freezers or other equipment connected to the shore power then please make the changes to comply as your non compliance will not make the Club responsible for any loss of perishables or other issues arising from the removal of the non-compliant shore power leads. If compliant shore power leads are found to be damaged or weathered making them non-compliant, the pen occupant will be advised to repair/replace the shore power lead within 7 days after which time the Club will replace the lead and charge the cost to the pen occupant. Committee member Rob Gillespie has identified another dangerous electrical issue specific to vessels fitted with dual shore power inlets (one is similar to a caravan fitting and has the pins exposed). This fitting becomes live when the power board is switched to parallel and creates a dangerous situation especially if a power lead is connected. If your vessel is fitted with one of these power inlets please take immediate action to eliminate this as it could result in tragic Caravan inlet on a vessel outcomes. POWER

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm

Heading down the coast in the Twilight Cruise

I hope you are all doing well and that the onset of cooler weather is not causing too many problems. The Power Section has organised several events recently both on and off water. The sections first ‘Twilight Cruise’ in recent history was very well supported with 80 people boarding 8 boats for a leisurely evening trip along the coast to Scarborough and back. The weather was perfect, the sea was flat and the wind non-existent. It would have been difficult to choose a better evening. That said, it has been suggested to one of our very experienced skippers that they may require a refresher course on the difference between green and red marker lights especially on the approach to the harbour by way of Boy-in-a-Boat Reef! The cruise was followed by a BBQ at Pinky’s Wet Bar which also turned out to be a most successful venture with new friends being made among those who attended. Thanks must go to the staff for putting up with us, especially Chef

Damo for his help with the BBQs. Most particularly though, thanks must go to the skippers who took out their boats and made the evening so successful. The HYC Rottnest Run was the occasion for the Mini Golf Challenge. Unfortunately not as well supported as last year, most of the Power Boaties claimed it was too early; it still took place and was won by Michael O’Brien with a solid score of 52 for the eighteen holes. The only hole-in-one was scored by Judy O’Brien. Well done by all who took part! We will try starting a bit later next year and give more people a chance to arrive on time! By the time you read this article the Pirate Raid to Claremont Yacht Club will have happened and, hopefully, we will be the proud holders of the Pirate Chest. A full report will appear in the next edition. We are looking forward to the next version of “Smokies Saturday Night Disco” on the evening of Saturday 20th August. Tickets are $15 and include nibbles on each table. Tables should be booked by calling the Club (9246 2833) – queries should be addressed either to the Club or to Leigh Clifton. Best wishes for the winter season and we hope to see many of you enjoying power boating activities in the near future. Left: Pinky’s Wet Bar after the Twilight Cruise
