COMMODORE’S REPORT Hope you all had a good Christmas, and may we all have a happy and prosperous 2018.
Representing HYC Christmas was a busy time for a lot of HYC Members that were competing and representing Hillarys Yacht Club at regattas, National Championships and ocean races. Congratulations to Todd Giraudo and Dubbo White for finishing third in the double-handed division in the Melbourne to Hobart Ocean Race; Marcus Fisk for his ninth place in the Laser Nationals in Brisbane and Ryan Binedell for winning the Cockburn Sound Regatta overall! There were 10 juniors and youths that travelled to Queensland at Christmas time to represent HYC at Nationals and Youth Championships and eight keel boats that participated in the Cockburn Sound Regatta – how fantastic it is to see HYC Members getting out and about to fly the Club flag! Over the same period, we saw a lot of empty pens in the marina, so it was great to see members actively using their boats. By the time you read this, Kevin Farebrother will be off to climb Mt Everest and sail around the world solo and unassisted. Todd and Dubbo will start the Melbourne to Osaka race on the 25th March. We wish all these Members well.

On the Social Side There has been plenty of action on the social scene with a jam-packed New Year’s Eve event. In February, we had the Tribute to Super Stars & Legends night with live music by “Roy Orbison”, “Madonna” and “Kylie Minogue”. Valentine’s Day was sold out and our next big function on Saturday 17th March is St Patrick’s Day with a buffet and a live band. Our volunteers and staff continue to do an excellent job, which is supported by the praise and accolades we receive when visiting yacht clubs join us at HYC for events. We recently hosted a range of other yacht club members during the Mike Harvey Race from Fremantle to Hillarys and the Pot of Gold as part of the YWA Offshore Series. Well done to all our volunteers and staff who make these events happen.
Membership The Club continues to trade on similar levels to last year and Membership is up slightly, which leads me into the new initiative of the “Member Referral Rewards” program where, as a current member, you can receive up to a $300 food and beverage voucher on your account for every new member you sign up! The New Members Dinner is scheduled for 5th April 2018 and I encourage all members to attend and see the opportunities available to you at our Club, whether it be Angling, Diving, Sailing or Power Boating. All sections will give a presentation on their activities and how you can get involved. So come along, enjoy the buffet and the company of your fellow members.

Events
The HYC Team were put to the test at “The Corporate Challenge’” teambuilding event!
It was great to see the Angling and Power Boat sections holding events but unfortunately the weather has been a bit average with very strong southerlies so a few events in December and January had to be cancelled or postponed. For something quite different, February also saw the introduction of a new partnership with team-building specialists, Corporate Challenge, and was launched with a HYC-hosted “The Corporate Challenge” event. Games that challenged the teams’ communication and problem solving left everyone thirsty for a drink afterwards and perfectly demonstrated the range of corporate events that our Club can host. Hopefully you will see more of this around the Club as HYC propels itself into being an ideal venue for team building events tied in with meetings and conferences. On 7th April we will once again be hosting the Harbour Classic Fishing Competition. With $22,000 in prizes up for grabs, it is open to not just HYC Members, but the general public too. Registrations are already open, so get your team sorted and join in this great event. And finally, don’t forget about the Hillarys Yacht Club Rottnest Run on 14th and 15th April with a big function in Thompson’s Bay at the pub! If you don’t have a boat, catch the ferry and book some accommodation to enjoy a fun Saturday night at the Rottnest Hotel. See you around the Club or on the water! Neil Harrison

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Here at the Club In light of the recent unfortunate events during the Fremantle to Bunbury and Return yacht race, I thought it might be an appropriate time to provide some feedback and support the Club. Our sailing, diving and angling sections all have strong management plans in place to ensure the conduct of events and the safety for all involved is paramount in our operations. A review of our on-water activities has already begun and should additional needs or requirements be seen, they will be implemented. Each of our sections have appropriately qualified and properly trained volunteers conducting their events. All senior, supervising and volunteer skippers have

accreditation with regards to knowledge and safety including recreational skipper tickets, radio operator and first aid certificates and working with children checks, all of which are kept up to date and maintained in Club records. Specific sections have additional safety needs which are also in place and maintained as required. This includes having oxygen available, appropriate first aid kits and defibrillators. HYC has three defibrillators within our facilities: in the Clubhouse, at the Boat Lifters and on our Club vessel, Balaton Jack. The location of these defibrillators is known to all volunteers and staff and appropriate signage is in place directing members to the location of the defibrillator. Our Clubhouse unit is located on the wall in the outdoor wet bar area, accessible 24/7, with instructions on how to access it with automated instructions on how to use and operate the unit. In addition to all those qualified volunteers from our sections, we currently have 22 staff within our food and beverage, administration, training and boat lifting departments, all trained and accredited in first aid to assist the safety of members should occasions arise, whether minimal or more significant and life-threatening. I have been asked to include the below in support of the structures we have in place: Hello Danny, On behalf of our family we want to make an official publication please and say thanks to all the Staff at Hillarys Yacht Club, and the two male members for their kind attention, care and prompt assistance given to Rob McCormick (my husband) when he collapsed and required urgent medical attention on Friday afternoon, 15th September 2017. This was quite a shock at the time to myself, family, staff and members present. The staff were diligent in their action contacting the Ambulance and giving prompt assistance as required. We were able to contact Darren Seivwright, one of the men who assisted Rob, but didn't manage to ask who the other person was, and we would be happy to speak to him directly if that's possible, so please leave your name and contact details with the staff at Hillarys. We know that Hillarys Yacht Club do CPR courses regularly and would like to stress just how important it is for people to have CPR knowledge, because one never knows just when you need to apply it in emergencies to have a successful outcome. Thankfully, Rob has made a good recovery after a few days in hospital and is grateful to all concerned in assisting him. Our sincere thanks, Wyn, Rob, Ian and Kevin McCormick We often get complimentary letters thanking us for the service and hospitality we provide here at the Club following events, functions, food and beverage or boatlifting, but I must admit it is quite heartening when you know that something we have in place for that unknown or certain emergency can result in a welcomed outcome.

Around the Club The Monday, Wednesday and Thursday night special dinners are being well received and supported. There will be new lunch and dinner menus in the members’ restaurant following the long weekend with weekly specials being promoted to maintain the quality and variety offered to members. Our Sunday Sessions are also being well received. Supported with a variety of affordable food and beverage, live music, happy hour pricing and our Jag the Joker draw at 5pm, which I am advised just went off with $1,200 going to the lucky card drawer, making it $3,200 returned in jackpots overall, following the successful Friday members draw of $2,000.

One off the Bucket List
Why HYC Member Tony Brooke recommends the Sydney to Hobart Race I was lucky enough to tick an item off my bucket list last year and book a berth aboard Eve for the 2017 Sydney to Hobart Race. Eve is a Nautor Swan 65, Sparkman & Stephens designed ketch weighing in at a hefty 36t! Being the biggest GRP yacht built in its day, the Swan 65 had much ocean racing success from the mid-1970s, with Sayula II taking out the inaugural Whitbread Around the World Race, and many Swan 65s placing over the early editions of this race. Eve was built in 1983, hull 35 of the 41 yachts built, and currently resides at the CYCA. The adventure started with a week’s training on Eve in early November, a chance to get to know the boat and crew. The crew of 15 were truly international, with members flying in from the USA, Denmark, Britain & New Zealand and most states of Australia represented, including one Tasmanian who quipped he only needed to book a one-way ticket for the race! The training week culminated in the 175 nm Port Stephens and return Cabbage Tree Island qualification race over the weekend. At the completion of the training I was happy to be informed that, thanks to my HYC-honed boat handling skills, I had been selected as one of the four helmsmen for the big race! Weather conditions for the start of the Sydney to
Hobart were light easterly winds at 10 kn, making for a slow beat out of the harbour. However, the winds soon turned northerly and steadily built in strength during the following days, making for some of the best conditions on record. Eve had an excellent run and, apart from blowing out a spinnaker half way across Bass Strait, there were no major incidents during the trip. However, we were involved in quite a dramatic man-over-board incident on the first evening out of Sydney. A sailor from the Clipper boat “Invictus Games”, which was slightly ahead of us at the time, went overboard and we pulled out of the race and stood by as ‘spotters’ and secondary recovery boat, while the crew member was recovered from the water. He was eventually recovered by another clipper boat, “HotelPlanner.com”, and transferred to his original boat without injury (except to pride!). For me, the incident bought home how small a target a person is in the water. Even though the seas at the time were quite calm and the light good, it was very difficult to maintain visual contact with the person in the water as the boats manoeuvred. Thanks to some good MOB training, the incident had a positive outcome. Eve was eventually awarded a 50 minute redress for render assistance. They say that the Hobart race is won or lost in the race

across Storm Bay and up the Derwent, and we certainly experienced the feeling of hopelessness that comes from sailing into a wind-hole in the bay and being parked for about 4 hours. To have come 600 nm and be going nowhere, so close to the finish line, was truly frustrating! However, I’m pleased to say that, not only did Eve eventually make it to Hobart, but we managed to pick up a few places in various divisions along the way! Eve was the 66th boat over the line in 3 days, 5 hours, 26 minutes and 48 sec. This gave us a 2nd placing in the Corinthian amateur division and a 3rd placing on ORCi handicap in Division 3. It was nice to have a reason to sober up after the arrival celebrations at Customs House and get along to the presentation event! Certainly an experience I would recommend to fellow keel sailors at HYC.

Ron Marian
Ron was first introduced to sailing 58 years ago when he joined Pelican Point Sea Scouts at age 11. They sailed 16 foot, gaff rigged sea boats, either clinker or carvel built with canvas sails. During his 11 sea scouting years Ron achieved Master Mariner level as well as becoming a Queen Scout, and had many ocean adventures in the sea boats. Ron met his wife Leigh through sailing activities at Pelican point (Leigh being a Sea Ranger) 50 years ago and they now live on a 3 acre property in Wanneroo. Ron and Leigh have two sons, Dann and Richard and three grandsons with a granddaughter on the way. Dann learnt to sail dinghies at HYC in the early 90’s and one of his sons, Alekzander is currently doing the Tackers courses. Leigh helped organise the initial HYC Mirror training courses in the early nineties and held the position of Dinghy Captain. Apart from sailing, Ron’s other interests are Triumph cars (currently two in the shed) and gardening on the property. Ron has crewed on many and varied yachts and dinghies over the past 50 years. His first crewing position was as forward hand on a 36 footer (Hydroconic) out of Claremont. He then helped his brother in law build a 16 foot plywood Hornet dinghy which they sailed out of Freshwater Bay and took to the Australian Championships in Corio Bay Vic in 1978. The Hornet was then followed by a few years crewing on a 505, which was very hard work. Ron qualified as an analytical chemist and was involved in businesses within mining, analysing geological samples and finally specialising with the design and construction of laboratories on mine sites. In 1987 Ron and family relocated to Townsville for business, and with the house overlooking the ocean, they purchased their first yacht, a Cole 28, which gave them hours of fun around Magnetic Island. Back in Perth, in 1990, Ron crewed for Andy Hill at HYC, and in 1991, the family became members of HYC. In the same year they purchased a Miller and Whitworth masthead rig 32 footer. This yacht,
Ex-Tension, competed in club racing until it was sold in 1996. Ron was HYC Sailing Captain from 1992-93 and was involved with the organisation of the initial Pot of Gold Race. Sailing trips include Bunbury and return, Geographe Bay regattas, Abrolhos Islands, Freo to Bali, Whitsundays and Langkawi with fellow HYC sailors. Sailing took a back seat from 1996 to 2003 as business took priority, but in 2004 Ron decided it was time to get back into sailing and First Impression was purchased in partnership with Allen Sharman, one of his three business partners. Ron retired in 2009, 12 months after his business was sold and has enjoyed more time sailing, restoring Triumph cars, gardening and travel. He is a member of the Fat Boys group and Leigh is a member of the Fit Chics with both groups meeting every Wednesday.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT COACHES CORNER CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF INFLATABLE LIFE JACKETS There have been several reports recently where life jackets have inflated unexpectedly. It is important that the different types of inflatable life jackets are understood. When going boating with a chance of waves around, they come into contact with an auto inflatable life jacket, there is a very good chance of the life jacket inflating as was demonstrated at the HYC seminar just over a year ago. The types recommended are the manual inflatables used at HYC. As with all boating and safety gear, maintenance is of paramount importance. The salt needs to be washed off after being used and the jacket needs to be dried before being stowed away. It is recommended that the jackets are complete with crotch straps as specified in the Australian Sailing Safety guidelines. Jackets should be inflated for 24 hours every 12 months. Any defects should be recorded.
Round the World Clippers
School Holiday Sailing Courses
In December we reported that the Club had been invited to select a team in the Clipper race at Fremantle Sailing Club. The regatta was created for members of six yacht clubs to have the opportunity to race aboard the 70’ clipper yachts. The crew that represented HYC was selected by a random ballot of restaurant diners. HYC was allocated the overall leading skipper’s yacht, Quingdao. Todd Giraudo, our helmsman, jockeyed with the other yacht club skippers to try get an advantage off the start line. Our crew enjoyed the experience to sail on one of these yachts and now have first-hand knowledge of sailing at 30 degrees, as the fleet prepared itself for the forthcoming All Australian Leg of the Clipper Round the World Race. A regimen of eat, sleep, sail for weeks non-stop was agreed to be a lot of hard work. There are currently seven crews from WA across the fleet of 11 Clipper yachts. You can follow the clippers on their website: www.clipperroundtheworld.com
HYC’s Training team excelled itself during the recent December/January school holiday period. There were 181 students in these four weeks. From these courses, 24 have graduated to be able to participate in the Club’s Saturday morning program, with more growth promised. At the beginning of the season we planned to start with one optimist fleet, and introduce the bronze fleet in January with a further option for the silver fleet to be recreated in March. Last week there were 18 Optimist sailors participating in the Cow Rock Race. Our next school holiday courses will be in April.
Sail Easter Regatta Preparation to host our first Sail Easter Regatta is well underway with the increased training of the volunteers to the roles required. There is interest in this type of regatta and the waters off Hillarys are very suitable. Please visit our website for further information. Chris Kelly

DIVE
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm
Nothing’s routine Have you ever been through a major life event or challenge that has caused you to take stock and value the good things in your life? Things that are routine or ordinary come under the microscope and you appreciate how wonderful they are anew. Come and look through that lens with me at our recent routine dive trip to Rottnest “Blue Holes”. Firstly, a little bit about the HYC Dive Section members. Most come and stay a very long while. Few only a short while. As we all know, everyone moves on when life takes them on another part of their journey. So for the time we spend together, we are grateful. You could not count the years diving or number of dives some of the life-long divers on our boat have experienced. Some are mid-way at about 14 years, some are just 14 years (old). These two 14-year-olds have been adopted by the salty sea-hardened divers who are all secretly vying to teach the precious young blood everything they knew or wish they had known. Suddenly everyone wants their own little mini-me to live it all again through the fresh eyes of a 14-year old. Every gear check, buddy check and glance is one of pride for ‘our girls’. They suddenly have 14 parents on-board, ironic because they thought they came out with us to escape the drudgery of the parentals.
20 Compass March 2018 - Hillarys Yacht Club Inc
About the dive … The wind and wave forecast all week had increasingly pointed the little green arrows to the GO DIVING reading and definitely not to the DO CHORES reading we all dread. The boat was fully booked. The excitement on-board was mounting. On-board we had some of those life-long divers, who as you would expect have become our life-long friends, and we had our two youngest members, and the trifecta – a potential new member. With the weather so good we headed to West End to a spectacular site we call “Blue Holes” which is not one of the sites we visit often. There is no need to tell you what we saw. You can see the photos here from some of our very skillful photographers June Sullivan, Jon Tomkins and Neil Douglas. If you’ve ever wondered what is beneath those deep blue and turquoise waters, please take a moment to enjoy. And if you’ve ever wanted to come and see it for yourself, contact our Rear Commodore of Diving. We dive most weekends in season, weather dependent of course. Lesley Jolliffe

DINGHY
We had a very enjoyable family fun day of activities in mid December to complete the first half of our Summer Series days. Activities included paddle races, spray on Father Christmas beards competition, tug of war and BBQ burgers. During late December and early January ten of our sailors and their families participated in Australian Championships for their types of boats (Classes). Both the Laser and Optimist Classes were in southern Queensland. They all sailed very well, with good results in fleets averaging around 70 boats. Two sailors then went to the Australian Youth Championships which were sailed from the same venue, to improve on their personal bests. In early February we had a big number of dinghies sailing in the Cow Rock Race day where as part of the excitement and gala of the event, the dinghies sail amongst the HYC members’ power boats and yachts which were anchored on the north side of the Boat Harbour for close viewing of the race. Lots of new sailors and their families have joined us from the sailing courses held during the last school holidays. Each Saturday they have been able to continue developing their sailing skills with the assistance of our coaches, while they transition into our racing fleets. In early February we had a practice and training day, which also provided the opportunity for adults to learn to sail or refresh their dinghy sailing skills and join our Saturday sailing activities.
UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 4th Wed of the Month at 7.00pm
The following are some of the activities that Dinghy sailors, families and supporters can be involved with in the next few months, aside from the regular Saturday sailing days: Our largest Dinghy event of the year is our Sail Easter Coaching Regatta from 30 March to 1 April, with special activities including WAIS Coaches and special guests, plus many visiting sailors from other WA sailing Clubs. We have our Little Island Race event in early April. Then we finish off the Summer Series days with some fun at our Volunteers’ Day in late April. Our annual Presentation evening is in May. Several of our Dinghy Classes will have their State Championships on the March long weekend, at various locations around Perth, and we wish them all the best and hope they enjoy those events. KEELBOAT RACING
UPCOMING EVENTS Division Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm
Cockburn Regatta Several HYC yachts made their way down for the 60th celebration of the Cockburn Regatta between Christmas and New Year. The large fleet of JAM entries were divided into three with Wendy Harrison skippering Deckchairs Overboard into first place in one group and Ryan Binedell on Low Flying Duck doing the same in another. Hard Evidence was second and others to do well included Salamander, Blue Chip and Sensei. Congratulations to Low Flying Duck who was named champion yacht of the regatta across all divisions. The conditions were challenging with some afternoon races cancelled.
Hobart Done, Now Osaka Having sailed Kraken across the Bight, Todd Giraudo and Dubbo White competed very successfully in the Melbourne to Hobart race. They were second on IRC in the double handed division just 13 minutes off first with a corrected time of 2 days, 18 hours and 53 minutes. The performance augurs well for the Melbourne to Osaka race leaving Port Phillip Bay in March. The yachts pass through Bass Strait and then turn north to pass between the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. There they meet the challenges of the Doldrums where there is often little or no wind. On their final leg they complete their journey backwards through the seasons to meet the Japanese spring at the finishing line in Osaka. The race will take approximately a month. The Club wishes Todd and Dubbo all the very best for fair winds, following seas and a safe return to port.
Pot of Gold and Dash for Cash This year the courses for these two events brought the yachts together at Sorrento and Scarborough for a wonderful spectacle of offshore yacht racing. In the Dash for Cash Sally Malay, Not Negotiable and Catabatic were winners in their respective divisions 1 to 3. In the shorter than usual Pot of Gold race on the Saturday Mulberry kept up with the bigger yachts to record a creditable third in division two and Low Flying Duck was second in the double handed division, earning high praise from Bernie Kaaks: “Ryan Binedell’s little S97 Low Flying Duck, sailing in the double handed division with 17-year-old crewman Nathan Stacey, set the standard with a superb display of tactics and boat handling skill….. make no bones about it – the weekend belonged to the two boys on Low Flying Duck. Their talent augurs well for the future of offshore sailing in WA.” Thanks to Chris Kelly for a superb weekend.

North Coast Series After three of the five days of racing in the series, the competition is close and competitive. Hillarys had won the first two days however Ocean Reef fought back on day 3 through Hot Gossip, Leda and Stump Jumper to narrow Hillarys’ lead. Jack Tar, Sandrine, Hard Evidence, Catabatic and Blue Chip have been amongst the pennants for Hillarys. The final two days will decide the Series winner for 2017/18.
Ladies Skippers’ Race Some of the ladies were regular crew members, some came from the dinghy section for the race and in the case of Kerry Matthews, well she came without any sailing experience hoping for an introduction to sailing and skippered Quicksilver to second and fastest in division two! In division one Chelsea Bradford helmed for dad on Salamander to score a first and fastest with Sue Bird on Perle second and Marie O’Brien bringing Sandrine in third. Marlene Scheckel skippered Volant to win division two, Quicksilver second and Elissa Graham on Blue Chip was third. In division three Verma Vitales helmed Pandora into first and fastest whilst Sally Simmonds on Sensei was second. John Bird Photo right: Ladies skippers show off their pennants

CRUISING IN COMPANY
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Thurs of the Month at 7.30pm 17/18 Mar: Longreach Bay Cruise
Rockingham Australia Day Cruise The Rockingham TCYC Cruise from Friday 26th January 2018 - Australia day - to January 28th was actually a few days longer for some of our cruisers attempting to avoid the strong southerly winds usually encountered during this part of the summer season. The cruising yachts, Zest, Georgia and Banco sailed on the Thursday. Zest and Georgia were successful but unfortunately Banco found the very strong southerly winds, which were blowing all day eventually forced them to return to Hillarys. On Friday morning the winds were South / South Easterly and not as strong as they had been the day before. Perle, Panache, Sana II and Eaglehearts were able to arrive at their moorings in the early afternoon. At 18 00 hours all the cruisers boarded Eaglehearts to enjoy BYO nibbles, drinks and supper to share. The conversations centred on how we had handled the southerly winds as we made our way into them. Motors were the go for part of the way. Then the sun sank and we were delighted to realize we would be enjoying a clear dark evening. Light pollution was not an issue in beautiful Mangles Bay. We watched the Perth Sky Show way on the northern horizon. As soon as that was over the jet black sky exploded with the most magnificent display of fireworks that Rockingham has ever presented. We had a grandstand view from Eaglehearts. We are all very grateful for the experience and thank Nick and Sylvia our very gracious hosts.

30 Mar - 3 Apr: Easter Cruise Mandurah 5 or 6 May: Mindarie Luncheon Cruise 26/27 May: Longreach Bay Cruise On Saturday we all enjoyed the lovely relaxed venues of Rockingham, including the café at Palm Beach and the Ten Pin Bowling Alley. After a light lunch in a lovely street café, there was an opportunity for a swim and an afternoon nap. In the early evening we gathered again for pre-dinner drinks then dinner itself at The Cruising Yacht Club. Afterwards some of us rocked up to the Rockingham Lawn Bowling Club to participate in a Rock ’n’ roll dance night. The Hillarys CiC founding Cruising Captain, Nigel Ridgeway, was the band leader. Renewed acquaintances and introductions were made. We were very pleased to have Nigel during the breaks and Aileen’s company during the evening. It was fun to dance and be among some expert and inspiring rock and rollers and fun to be enjoying again the music our parents generally did not like. On Sunday the Cruising in Company yachts went their ways, some down south, some stayed a few more days and some back to Hillarys in perfect sailing weather for a good part of the way. Geoff James.

ANGLING Welcome to the first Angling report for 2018 and we trust everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. The end of 2017 saw the last competition take place on Christmas Eve due to weather postponement from the previous week; the Christmas Eve competition was voted in the section meeting to go ahead by the team of dedicated anglers. There appears to be some conjecture regarding forecasting the weather for the fishing competitions with Seabreeze, BOM and Willy Weather all forecasting strong winds yet the ocean looks flat as a pancake. A typical example was both competitions for December and January had to revert to the alternative date, we have had a really windy summer with cooler temperatures so far, let’s hope things improve as we head into 2018.
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2nd Wed of the Month at 7.00pm 14 Mar, 7pm: Angling Section Meeting (AGM Motions) 18 Mar: Boat Fishing Comp. 23 Mar: Angling Easter Raffle Draw 24 Mar: AAA Competition 7 Apr: Harbour Classic 14 Apr: HYC goes to “ROTTO” 15 Apr: Boat Fishing Comp. 17-19 Apr: Junior Fishing Clinic 5–6 May: Beach Competition 9 May: Boat Section AGM Meeting 20 May: Boat Fishing Comp.
December Boat Competition 17 Anglers took to the water on Christmas Eve with 8 species of fish caught. Bill McPherson was the overall winner with 4 species, 45.12 points (bag weight 0.571kg). This was Bill’s first fish in a competition in a long time and it was great to see him back fishing and in the winner’s circle. Second was Allan McDiarmid with 37.76 points (bag weight 1.638kg) and his daughter Ashly took out the Junior section with 38.68 points (bag weight 2.344kg) and Ruby McGrady won the ladies section with 25.25 points (bag weight 0.279kg).
next day due to the unkind weather and although it was better the next day, some of the kids did feel their sea legs were missing. All was good on the last day which was the species competition followed by a BBQ and prize awards. Overall winner Bart Whirehead with 35.30 points (0.651kg) and normally in a species competition, second place would have gone to Cooper Paulwest with 35.17 points (0.587kg) and third place to Trent Johnson 35.13 points (0.569kg). There wasn’t much between the first three spots, however as this is a Kids’ clinic, everyone with the heaviest fish of the species received prizes, well done! The Fish of the Kids Clinic was a King George Whiting caught by Zackery Quinn. Prizes awarded for the heaviest of each species were: Sand Whiting - Ben Berglin Herring - Copper Paulwest Mackeral - Bart Whitehead Flathead - Matthew Berglin Skippy - Riley Baddock Goat Fish - Zackery Quinn. All the kids had a great time and are looking forward to the next Fishing Clinic in the school holidays. Big thanks to Mel Harvey and all the volunteers.
Best fish of the day was a Skippy - 0.774kg caught by Allan and unfortunately Allan caught a 6kg Silver Bream which was not a species in the competition - better luck next time!
Junior Fishing Clinic The next fishing event was the Junior Fishing Clinic in the January School Holidays with 24 kids participating in a very successful event. The three day course teaches kids how to cast, tie knots, use tackle/fishing gear and two days of the clinic is dedicated to fishing in the club boats, the first day on the boat is teaching how to fish and the second day is a species fishing competition with lots of prizes and a BBQ. The first day fishing was postponed until the

January Boat Competition 12 men, three ladies and two juniors took part in the January competition. It would have been 14 men, however yours truly had a mishap with losing a wheel on the trailer as we launched! Some nice fish were caught with a total of 9 species. Men’s: Winner: Greg Mansell with 5 species 58.59 points (1.795kg) 2nd: Frank Pierucci with 5 species 58.06 points (1.531kg) 3rd: Allan McDiarmid with 4 species 50.46 points (3.23kg) Ladies Winner: Ruby McGrady with 5 species 57.97 points (1.487) 2nd: Annette Kirwin with 4 species 45.88 points (0.942kg) Juniors Winner: Sophia O’Kane 1 species 17.30 points ( 0.151kg) 2nd: Ashley McDiarmid 1 speiecs 17.24 (0121kg) Fish of the competition was Allan McDiarmid’s 2.24kg Snook!
January Beach Competition Five men and three ladies competed on a magnificent weekend for beach fishing but unfortunately the fish weren’t playing and very few fish of size were caught. The women out-fished the men again! Men’s: Winner: Lucas Pohl with 2 species 26.23 points (0.68kg) 2nd: Peter McGrady with 1 species 17.22 points (0.111kg) Ladies Winner: Ruby McGrady - 2 species 26.14 points (0.572kg) 2nd: Michele Campbell - 2 species 25.28 points ( 0.19kg) Michele’s Whiting of 0.69kg is in contention for the Tiny Gaff Award - a prize of $50 awarded at the Angling presentation night. Australia Day This celebration was held in Cosy Corner “ Narrow Neck” Rotto. It was the perfect place to be as we were sheltered from the wind and it was great to see 48 members attending.
