COMMODORE’S REPORT HYC is a large enterprise and is not immune to the prevailing economic and social climate. Constant attention is needed and it is pleasing to achieve another successful annual result which continues to deliver value to members. We started the year with an almost new Management Team. The Executive Committee was strengthened by the addition of the independent executive committee member. Recognising its overall strategic management responsibilities the Executive has focused on realistic reporting. I want to pay tribute to the way the Executive has been willing to explore, debate and adopt change. In the same way the Management Committee welcomed a number of new faces and I am pleased with the way both Committees have come together to provide very effective management of our Club. The year - in keeping with the theme of innovation has been an active one and we have seen a significant number of initiatives. To mention a few: The year saw the establishment of the Junior Club House - This has provided a focus for all junior club members and it’s rewarding to those who worked so hard to bring it about to see it used so effectively. I wish to emphasise that this is a facility for all junior members – not solely for sailors. After lengthy negotiations, over almost 12 months, the fuel distribution facility is now operating for the benefit of the Club. While fuel sales will add to the Club’s bottom line there are more strategic benefits going forward from this initiative. I commend our GM for his forward thinking and perseverance in this endeavour. The contribution of the Constitution Compliance Committee to a successful outcome is also acknowledged. We have completed a members’ survey with a statistically significant response from members. The wide ranging survey was undertaken by a professional survey group and the outcome points to high level of member satisfaction (greater than 80%) with all aspects of the Club. This is a clear guide that the Club is heading in the right direction and we intend to take on board those suggestions contained in the survey responses. We have taken the initial steps towards procurement
Hillarys Yacht Club Marine Lifting Services
of a new computer system. The proposed system will improve club operations by integrating all administrative functions. We are undertaking a thorough examination of the preferred system and expect to see a new system in place for the start of the next F/Y. Hillarys Yacht Club has a strong training and development culture. We continue our close contact with schools and deliver a range of training programs to members and the public alike. As a leading sporting venue in the northern region we have commenced discussion with TS Marmion and kindred sea sports clubs in our region to explore opportunities for closer cooperation and mutual benefit. Club Membership continues to grow and it speaks well of the Club that we maintain a high rate of member retention. Obviously; membership is our lifeblood and we remain open to ways of expanding our membership base by attracting and retaining new members. To this end, Management has requested the preparation of a review of membership categories. The aim is to help us to address the aging demographic which was clearly highlighted in the member survey. As I mentioned in my opening remarks, HYC is a significant enterprise. It exists solely for the benefit of members and in such a diverse group benefits may be viewed though different prisms. Thus we seek to achieve a balance in everything the Club does especially a balance between the sporting and social side. We are introducing some innovative social events and we will watch with interest the extent of member support. Finally, after a period of considerable capital investment I had the sense we may be in a period of consolidation. I now believe there is no such thing. While our level of investment is not so high - in the monetary sense - we must continue to invest effort in the growth of the Club. New buildings and facilities are tangible evidence of growth. Things like member satisfaction, junior development and safe jetties are less tangible, but no less important to the long term growth of our Club. I’m sure I speak for the Management team, and Club administration, when I say we look forward to assisting Hillarys Yacht Club achieve its full potential as an institution we can all be proud of.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT BOATLIFTING & ANNUAL MAINTENANCE It is that time of year again when members need to plan and book their annual vessel maintenance requirements. The October – December busy period will be upon us soon and if your vessel has not been booked in, you may be inconvenienced having to wait for an opening to occur. Please ensure you plan ahead. When you attend the lifting facility, you will notice the recently defined pedestrian walk way and the operational area of the straddle carrier. Please be cognisant of these areas as they are there for the safety of all including the marked car bays.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Thank you to those members who attended the AGM. It is always good to see some new and different faces in the crowd.
MEMBERS SURVEY Those in attendance at the AGM were given a short verbal review by the Commodore on the responses to the survey and the level of support and endorsement offered by members across the wide range of topics identified in the survey. In further review I can advise member support of the Club and its operations was positive and above 85%. There were many areas positive comments were received in relation to the Club, its facilities, its food and beverage, the service provided and the level of communication including use of the Club website. Most members access the website monthly with 71% seeking information on upcoming events and 57% seeking social and restaurant information with 92% preferring to receive communications by email, newsletters and then the website. Generally members were very supportive and enjoy the facilities of the Club, the quality and selection available in the different dining areas and the major events conducted by the Club. There were of course a variety of comments offering input across many areas. Some suggested our restaurants should be fine dining only and the pricing high so only those members who can afford the experience can attend, through to those who believe there is too many food choices making selection difficult and the range should be reduced along with the pricing. There were a number of comments requesting some healthier food choices on snack and restaurant menus which I expect the chefs will review ready for the season ahead. Enjoyment of themed meals and special meal deal nights was also well received. I can advise 45% of members who responded to the survey attend the Club weekly and 20% monthly. That Wednesday Friday Saturday and Sunday are the most popular days members attend the Club with 62% Fridays and 50% on weekends. When members attend the Club, up to 76% attend for dining and bar facilities
hillarysyachtclub.com.au
and 20% for boating and sailing activities. Which is funny, as when asked, ‘why did members join the Club’ their responses were 62% for boating and the activities provided and 38% said for social reasons. 76% of members attended the Club evenings and 57% during the day. Member comments relating to service and staffing was very positive, there were comments specific to individual staff members, most quite complimentary while some needed development. These comments are being followed up. Other topical areas included the size of our restaurants, verandah use, the use of the wet bar and BBQ area, size of our TVs, what use to be big is now considered small, or our eye sight is deteriorating with age, some thought lounge furnishings are too low and hard to sit in. Replacement members lounge bar stools are already ordered with delivery expected mid September. 96% of members support maintaining dress standards. 70% supported having an even higher level of dress standards. 77% believe membership fees are affordable and good value for money. One stand out demographic and already known result was that 87% of members who responded were over 45 years of age. This is an area Management Committee was aware of and is already addressing, supporting categories attracting younger members and able to afford membership of our fine yacht club. I would like to thank all those members who took the time to respond to the survey. Your input is most appreciated and as we move forward the feedback and comments will be reviewed by Management and Senior Staff ensuring member needs are accommodated into the future.
MEMBER REWARD The lucky member drawn from all those who responded to the survey and winning the choice of a $500 Jetstar Voucher or an Ipad is Gavin & Lorraine McCaughey. Congratulations to you both, Vicki our PR and Marketing Officer will be in contact.

2014 Commodore's Ball "Best one yet" and "first class night of entertainment" were words that described this years Commodore's Ball. Oversized masks and sophisticated centrepieces decorated the room and the almost 300 strong members and guests looked stunning in the array of masks. Rod Stewart Tribute Show had the crowd on their feet with the dance floor influxed as soon as he started. You can view the photos from the night on our website.
Smokies Disco The mere mention of the big names in disco – Donna Summer, Chic, ABBA and KC and the Sunshine Band to name just a few – evoke fond memories of leisure suits, Studio 54, the Hustle and the mash potato. On Saturday 17 August the HYC Harbour Room took a step back in time and transformed into a discotheque of colour and shimmering disco balls. Check out some of the photos from the night in Through the Porthole on page 19.

♫ Do You-Do You Wanna Dance? ♫ O
ur yacht club is helping members and their friends to improve their fitness and mental and emotional well-being through providing the venue for dancing lessons run by Geoff and Jan Tuke. Dancing is a great leisure activity that you can enjoy with your partner and friends. Being able to dance will enhance your enjoyment of cruises, office parties, weddings and HYC club events. The last dance course attracted almost 30 starters and culminated with 16 people dining at the club restaurant for dinner prior to the wind-up “social dance/lesson” to mark their ‘graduation’ to the next level. The next series will start again on September 15th and November 3rd. The cost for 6 weeks is $50 per person and missed lessons can be made up in the next round. Each course will give you some simple basics moves for Rock’n’Roll and Cha Cha and at the end of each course you will learn a dance from a different genre. All this will give you enough confidence to get on the dance floor at the club on a Friday night. Again, the club facilitates this by providing a variety of great bands and musicians who play from 6pm to 10pm. Members and their guests can also enjoy a buffet meal and bar facilities. You do not have to be a member to attend the lessons so bring your friends along for a fun Monday night. Lessons start at 7pm and go for approximately

Know your skipper Age and Membership HYC
Kevin Stacey
Kevin recently celebrated his 85 birthday with a surprise dinner at his beloved club, organised by a member of the Keel division. This year he also celebrates being a member of HYC for 21 wonderful years.
Family Background Married to Val (dec) with three children Peter, Phillippa and Greg.
Occupation Retired highly respected Chartered Loss Adjuster, and in the early days: a prospective jeweller’s apprentice, office boy and Newsagent proprietor.
Yachts Started in a VJ (Melodette) in 1946, Shalimar, Ballerina, Anita, Enigma, and currently sailing Pinta, a Beneteau First 285 in Division 2 (first in Fremantle to HYC race last summer).
Achievements Starting the annual billy run to Rottnest, an event that all crews look forward to at the end of the summer season. Winner of many races including Fairway, Marmion Reef, Commodore’s Cup, Diggers’ Cup and the inaugural Shovel Award!
Awards Ancient Mariner’s Award in 2002 and upgraded in 2014 (Kevin is 6 generations older than the youngest member) and fully deserves the high esteem in which he is held at the club.
Special Events In 1997 Kevin as “Spatz Columbo” (Some Like It Hot) transformed the clubhouse into a speakeasy. Bootleg grog was smuggled in, concealed in a casket; there were dancing girls, a police raid, a 1925 getaway car
parked outside; certainly a night to remember! In the same year Kevin and Val were arrested at gun-point following the firing of the club shotgun to mark the finish of a race. Thereafter they were dubbed “Bonnie and Clyde”.
What does Kevin Think of HYC Kevin is “chuffed” that the club has come such a long way since the early days in the original donga and particularly the progress achieved with the Junior Section of young sailors; and now boasting their own clubhouse.
Regrets? Kevin would have liked to have sailed in a Sydney to Hobart race. There is still time Kevin!

TRAINGING & DEVELOPMENT For the past 2 months the sailing sections have been busy with sailing their winter series. The Dinghies have only needed to cancel one of their sailing days whilst all the races have been sailed by Keel to date. These have been sailed in very pleasant conditions. Keel have had up to 16 boats participating. The Competition has been very good on occasions. IRC has made a difference to this fleet with the honours being shared. We await the measurement of another 2 boats. At the AGM the Club acknowledged the efforts of our sailors with the Sport Star of the Year award that was awarded to Neil Harrison. Congratulations on a great season especially sailing with Wendy in the Tasar fleet. Several of our HYC sailors have ventured to other regattas including Tania Bartram who has been aboard Mako at Airlie Beach Race Week and Neil Harrison aboard “Not a Diamond” at Hamilton Island Race Week. The experience gained at these regattas is always a benefit on their return. Our very popular school holiday programs book out fast so register today! We have sailing courses for all levels and fishing clinics for those keen anglers.
2014 OPENING DAY OCTOBER 5 Planning is now well under way. It would be terrific to have all of Keel boat fleet on the start line. The DISNEY theme will allow many boats to look fantastic in the Sail Past after the Commodore’s Opening speech.
DISCOVER SAILING DAY SUNDAY NOVEMBER 2 Our annual opportunity to make members of the public welcome in the Club and have the chance to be out on the water on a boat, Keel or Dinghy.

SEABREEZE
How to use this weather forecasting service
Seabreeze provides a 7 Day forecast allowing us all to plan our lives. Whether you are planning a family picnic, fun day out or a day on the water, the Seebreese forecast will not only tell you the temperature forecast but also wind direction and speed. Cruicial for any outdoor adventure. At HYC we use this service to prepare for all our functions, including weddings, and all of our boating activities. When working with the current forecasts use “Ocean Reef” and then compare with the forecast on the first page this has become reasonably accurate. The data provides the wind strength and direction. Red and Yellow arrows are good boating days. Brown arrows are stay at home. Just remember these are constantly changing so keep an eye on them.

CLUB AWARDS POWER Junior Sportsperson of the Year
Senior Sportsperson of the Year
Club Member of the Year
Jake is a regular angler and has competed in all Beach and Boat competitions – winning many of these - throughout the year. He is a regular helper at major tournament weigh ins and junior fishing clinics. Jake recently represented HYC at the State Boat Titles where he took out the AAA State Junior Individual Champion Award.
This goes to a man who skippered his yacht to podium finishes in both the YAH and IRC Offshore series for 2103/14. He has competed successfully in the Brisbane to Keppel Yacht Race, the Hamilton Island Race week, the Magnetic Island Race Week and the China Cup hosted by the Royal Hong Kong YC. He also found time to race at home and won the HYC IRC Consistency series and the Div 1 Ocean series last season.
The Club Member of the Year has been a staunch supporter and leader of the Dinghy sailing section for the past 8 years. He joined the Club when his daughter was the only junior sailor and he now presides over a fleet of 50 boats. He has moulded together a strong group of volunteers - of parents and others - who manage races at a very high level, and ensure that our young - and not so young sailors - are supported on an off the water. The completion of the Junior Clubhouse is a tribute to him.

DINGHY We held our AGM in May and I would like to thank everyone who volunteered their time to serve on committee. There was also an AGM held for our Juniors and they have elected a committee to organise and look after junior interests in both sailing and social activities. Winter Sailing races are well underway with just one day’s racing due to unsafe weather conditions having to be postponed. Attendance has been excellent and it has been great to see some old and young familiar faces joining us on the water. The Race Management team have done a terrific job as always and I would like to thank these volunteers for the work they do to make Dinghy Sailing at HYC as enjoyable for everyone involved. Sailors Jackson Porter and Joshua Pang have had success with acceptance into the Australian Sailing team for Optimist Dinghies – Joshua Pang has been attending the European Championships for Optimists at the Royal St George Yacht Club, Dublin, Ireland, finishing 39th out of 153 sailors taking part in the event. A number of Optimist sailors will finish with that class and will transition into Laser sailing over winter. We look to have 12 4.7 rig Lasers to start next season and up to a potential 30 plus Lasers sailing this summer making HYC one of the strongest Laser clubs in Perth. On 21 September HYC will participate in a worldwide sailing event called Bart’s Bash. It is in memory of Andrew “Bart” Simpson who died during a training race for the America’s Cup in San Francisco in 2013. There are over 550 Clubs and approximately 1500 sailors have registered for this Guinness Book of Records event.

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 4th Wed of the Month at 7.00pm Ahead we have Opening Day and next season fast approaching. The Dinghy racing program has been completed and handbooks will be issued in good time prior to the season start. Those sailors who haven’t braved winter sailing – get the cobwebs off and boats dusted ready for summer sailing 2014/15. This November we are holding a Gala Fundraising Dinner with AFL legend Billy Brownless as guest speaker. This event is to raise funds to go towards Junior development and providing much needed resources to enable our Junior sailors to train for and compete in Australian N a t i o n a l Championships. This should be a fantastic “Smiling Faces Wear Braces!” evening with Billy’s talk and a whole lot more – keep Saturday 1 November Level C free and watch Endeavour Business Centre out for the promotional 32 Endeavour Road flyer. MARINA FACILITIES POWER
UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 2 last Mon of the Month at 7.30pm nd
Safety on board your vessel is of paramount importance and even more so when your family and friends come aboard in good faith with a belief that safety is your highest priority. Every skipper or vessel owner has a duty of care to ensure that they do everything possible to provide a safe and secure environment for family, friends and guests, which ultimately they are responsible for when on board. As such it is important that you familiarize yourself with the “A Guide to Members and Marina Facilities 2013/2014 “ edition which is available through the HYC website and updated annually and will provide you with appropriate information. Members are reminded that a marina compliance inspection of every vessel located in a Club pen is required prior to occupying the pen, or if not avoidable within 30 days of occupancy. Re-certification is required every five years. If you are the owner of a vessel then the following documents must be lodged with the Club office prior to occupation of the pen and the marina compliance inspection: • Boat Particulars Form (available from Club office) • Copy of vessel registration (issued by Department of Transport) • Copy of current insurance with at least $10M public liability • Electrical compliance certification from a licensed electrician or the vessel’s manufacturer stating that the vessel meets Australian Standards AS 3000 & 3004 • Gas compliance certificate completed by a licensed installer in accordance with the Office of Energy gas regulations. Remember that members of the Marina Facilities Committee are volunteers who on behalf of the HYC ensure compliance and adherence to the various bylaws and guidelines and undertake compliance inspections. As a courtesy we ask that you or one of your representatives attend to the arranged appointed time and date for the inspection which usually only takes about 30 minutes. Whilst on the subject of safety it is a timely reminder for all vessel owners with LPG appliances (be it portable or fixed) to become familiar with “Your guide to Using gas safely in marine craft” published by the Department of Commerce and available for downloading from the web at: www. commerce.wa.gov.au/sites/default/files/atoms/files/ using_gas_safely_in_marine_craft.pdf Some of the key regulatory requirements are: • Any installation, servicing and repair work to the LP gas system can only legally be carried out by a gas fitter licensed by EnergySafety. • All licensed gas fitters are issued with a certificate of competency, permit or authorisation on the basis of their qualifications.
hillarysyachtclub.com.au
•
You can easily check if the gas fitter is licensed by requesting their license number and contacting EnergySafety’s Licensing Office for confirmation. • Unauthorised and do-it-yourself work is illegal and can result in prosecution. Remember that Gasfitting is a job for the experts and you should always employ an authorised gas fitter. The gas fitter who carries out any installation work must: • Fix a compliance label to the vessel in a conspicuous position. The compliance label is a statement from the gas fitter confirming compliance with regulatory requirements. It includes additional important information such as the gas fitter’s details, notice of completion number and installation date. • Provide you with a copy of the notice of completion specifying that the work complies with the Gas Standards (Gasfitting and Consumer Gas Installations) Regulations. • Consider fitting fiddle rails and pot holders to the cooking appliance to prevent unintentional movement of cooking utensils. • Ensure any installed gas refrigerator is sealed in a cupboard or other enclosed compartment and vented to the outside. • Ensure that gas appliances are not installed or fitted in any marine craft exit or means of escape and must be located so that, in the event of a fire, the appliance will not impede anyone attempting to leave the craft.

HYC HARBOUR CLASSIC 2014
MAY BOAT COMPETITION
The following report on this event was provided by Rear Commodore Ian McCall. The Annual HYC Harbour Classic Fishing Competition was a great success. 177 Anglers participated, including 19 juniors, in a total of 60 boats. More advertising and distribution of brochures is seen as the reason for the increased number of competitors. Thanks to Dennis Loran for arranging the advertisements on Karl Langdon’s fishing program on 6PR. With good weather, plenty of fish were caught with two of our members awarded heaviest of species prizes. (Alan Partridge (flathead) and Frank Pierucci (whiting). Frank Antulov won an esky in the lucky prize draw and Mike O’Kane won the 3 metre rigid hull inflatable with 15 hp outboard motor. A big thank you is extended to all the volunteer members who gave their time to make this event a great success for the Club. Garry Cunningham was our MC for the day and once again did a great job, thanks Garry. Special thanks go to the Club sponsors whose donations make this an attractive competition to enter. Thanks also to Commodore Chris Grant for welcoming the competitors and their guests and for presenting the prizes. Not to be forgotten is the work of Danny and the Club staff whose contribution greatly helped ensure success for the event. The next Harbour Classic will be held on Saturday 18th April 2015
With lumpy seas forecast, 14 anglers signed on for the May Competition, resulting in nine different species presented at the weigh in. Junior winner with 5 species was Jake Speed (58.848 points), followed by Zac Currie with two species (25.670 points). Lady winner was Julie Loran with one species (26.222 points) and men’s winner was Frank Pierucci with 5 species (60.018 points) from Ron Thornton, also 5 species (59.068 points). The wheel spin was won by Greg Mansell with his 902g sweep.
JUNE BOAT COMPETITION Despite the full moon, a good forecast encouraged a few more anglers this month with 17 signing on for the day’s competition. Although a bit lumpy early on, the seas flattened later for a pleasant day on the water. At the weigh in, 16 species were recorded with a Baldchin Groper, a Breaksea Cod, a Harlequin fish and two Samson fish the standouts. Frank Pierucci with 10 species and a huge 145,612 points was the men’s winner, while his crew of junior Jake Speed with 6 species (82.702 points) was the junior winner. (Skippers are to get in line to follow Frank next month.) Lady winner with 5 species and 58.602 points was Julie Loran. The runners up in each category were Men, Steve Bevis with 3 species and 60,250 points, Lady Janine McLeod 5 species and 57.232 points, and Junior Lucas Pohl, 6 species and 70.304 points. Wheel spin winner was Frank Antulov with his Harlequin fish weighing 1.621Kg.

JULY BOAT COMPETITION
When the weather permitted, and a crew was available, we were able to get out amongst some very nice whiting and quite a few undersized Dhufish and Snapper. During the school holidays, Aiden Rinney caught a double header of juvenile Dhufish which were released successfully.
Scheduled for 20th July, this competition was postponed to 27th July because of an adverse weather report, however on 27th another wet and windy forecast caused the competition to be cancelled.

UPCOMING EVENTS Section Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7.30pm
Winter Series Four of the fortnightly winter races have been held in different conditions and with two to go in the series the final results are far from settled. A big surprise has been the turn-out of up to eleven yachts in Division One highlighted by the return of Sally Malay after renovations, Farrouk choosing to fly a kite this season and Chris Kelly and his all-female crew sailing Kraken for the first time. In Division One the spoils have been shared with Hard Evidence, Deckchairs Overboard, Synergy and Low Flying Duck all recording a win with Murphy’s Law and Mulberry filling the minor places more than once. In Division Two, there has been a pennant for every starter, mostly blue in colour for Covert Operation and the unlucky Bruce Ellery (Show Me) missing blue by one second in the first race and missing a mark in the fourth. Sam Tennent has sailed Safi consistently well recording a win and a second. Last year’s Winter Series winner in Jib and Main, Vaya Con Dios (Chris Blackney) returned to record three wins out of four with Perle, Catabatic and Salamander sharing the minor places so far. It will be interesting to see what conditions Mother Nature will deliver for the final two races and the effect on the trophy standings, in each division.
ANZAC Race With the centenary of ANZAC Day celebrated in April next year there are moves afoot to have a race from Fremantle to Albany and return. Already some twenty
yachts from several clubs have indicated interest not the least of which is Chris Kelly and his crew sailing Kraken. They have commenced familiarisation with the yacht by sailing the winter series and it will be testament to the Sailing Development program at HYC if they pull this one off. In fact they are doing what the Andrew (Bart) Simpson Sailing Foundation is espousing with Bart’s Bash.
Bart’s Bash On Sunday September 21 sailors at HYC will join with thousands of others around the world in a race to set a Guinness World Record and raise money for the Andrew (Bart) Simpson Sailing Foundation. “The race is a metaphor for how Andy lived his life: it’s about valuing what we have that is great, competing at the highest level, seeking to support every up and coming sailor, sharing experience, providing encouragement, expecting dedication and commitment”. Andrew Simpson was a Gold and Silver Olympic medallist and America’s Cup sailor who lost his life in an accident whilst preparing for the America’s Cup. Read more at www.bartsbash.co.uk and watch for race details in your inbox.
Thank You A big thank you to Chris Grant and Marshall Fox for manning the start tower and to Brett Young for the donation of a new light box that makes it so much easier to see the fall of the handicap numbers. Gary Illing has had a baptism of fire taking on the role of handicapper, managing the winter series and heading a committee to research the method of determining the overall Club Champion in the future. The model accepted at the July Keel meeting takes into account the different fleet sizes in the three divisions and will be trialled for two years.

POWER

The Power Section has had no formal boating activities since the Mindarie lunch although recent weeks have given us some beautiful boating weather. The 9th August saw us undertake our annual wine tasting tour. For the first time we headed off to Perth Hills rather than staying in the Swan Valley. Arriving in Carmel we started at Myattsfield Vineyards where Josh and Clair looked after us very well. Josh gave us a barrel tasting – a new experience for many – and explained how and why the Hills wines are different from those in the Valley. Clair showed us their excellent range of established wines and persuaded most of us to part with money – especially for “Dudley Durif” a variety all budded from the single surviving Durif vine that they imported some years ago. We moved on to see Dennis at “Carldenn Homestead” who, not only allowed us to taste a good range of wines but also provided a spread of cheese, dips and biscuits – most welcome! From there to “Fairbrossen Estate” where again a good range of whites and reds were available for tasting and the setting was amazing Lunch was taken on the coach at and between the vineyards and we made our way to the final winery, in Pickering Brook, the “Due Jolly”. Here, Rob made us very welcome and plied us with tastings whilst we tucked into the last of our lunch – very good of him especially as he also supplies platters for sale. His wines were excellent – especially the bottle won by Barry in Rob’s mini competition!!
hillarysyachtclub.com.au
As it was now approaching 4:15pm it was time to leave the hills and return to ground. Our next point of call was Duckstein Brewery where a few cooling glasses were downed before we made our way to the final point of call. Penny Garden, our dinner venue, provided an outstanding function menu which was beautifully served and thoroughly enjoyed by all. A place to which we will return! A huge vote of thanks must go to Jim Suffield who not only drove us all day but also had to collect the coach at 8:00 on Saturday morning and return it at 8:00 on Sunday. Thanks Jim – we all owe you! Upcoming activities for the section will include several trailer boat outings – the Mandurah weekend, the Jurien Bay weekend and, hopefully, a day’s outing to the Swan River. In addition we will have ‘Big Boat’ activities such as river and Rottnest picnics and day trips to different locations. Dates for these activities are not yet finalised but, once they are, look out for them in Compass Flyers and on notice boards. We look forward to seeing you all at Opening Day – Sunday 5th October – and wish you a great 2014/15 season.

Our introduction to the Club was the new members’ welcome meeting, at which we were introduced to the different sections within the Club. This evening was smoothly run and extremely informative about the benefits of participating in each of the different groups within the Club. As sailing was intended to provide us with a more relaxed lifestyle, we chose the CIC division. Rita & Brian, CIC captains, were particularly welcoming to us, but the whole group has gone out of their way to ensure that we have made safe passages on cruises that we have undertaken for the first time. One of our first ‘mentoring’ experiences was a Stark Bay cruise, where the negotiation of markers can be a little tricky. Not only did Sana II wait to guide us through the markers for the first time, but Rob James also greeted us on his dinghy and floated over an unmarked shallow rock to ensure that we didn’t accidentally hit it once we were inside the bay. This is just one example of many that could illustrate how cohesive the CIC is as a group. Socially in the last 2 months, we have enjoyed the end of season dinner,

Cruising in Company breakfast at Burn’s Beach cafe, & a winery tour. We have also welcomed back two cruising members, Jan and Mike Dury, who have recently sailed back to Hillarys from Brisbane.
