HE fourth man accused of murdering an elderly couple from Shongweni last week appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday with botharmsbandaged.KhulekaniWonderboy Mathonsi was clad in black pants and a bloodstained white T-shirt.

Answering magistrate Zinhle Mnguni, Mathonsi said his arms were bandaged

because he was mauled by police dogs on the day of his arrest.

Mathonsi was arrested by the Shongweni K9 unit, working with Hillcrest detectives, on Wednesday, the day his co-accused — Philani Shange (20), Siyabonga Xaba (24) and Scelo Mathabane (30) — appeared in court.

The men are charged with killing and robbing John (72) and Hester Noble at their home.

John Noble jnr said earlier this week that he forgave his parents’ killers. He said his family believe in love and forgiveness, but want justice to be served.

Meanwhile, the Shongweni community will hold another meeting in the area to discuss ways of improving security.

Resident Lolette Smith welcomed the progress in the investigation. “We’re pleased that something has been done. We’re hoping justice will prevail,” she said, adding that

the double murder had served as a wake-up call for the valley’s residents.

“We’ve all been aware of crime and we had measures in place. But when something like this happens,

ILLCREST Police are looking for witnesses to assist with information after a 64-year-old was hit on Inanda Road, Hillcrest last month.

According to police Mrs M Mkhwanazi was apparently crossing the road when she was hit by a vehicle on 6 October. “I fell on to the road, and the driver did not even stop to assist,” explained Mkhwanazi.

“UnfortunatelyIwasinshockanddidnotget a good look at the driver or the vehicle.”

Mkhwanazi said that she is hurt and angry

at the carelessness of the motorist. “If this could happentome,Iwonderhowmanyotherpeople have been severely hurt as well,” she said.

Hillcrest SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant France Mkhize said the matter is being investigated.

“We are appealing to anyone with information, that might have seen what happened, or description of the vehicle to please come forward. Any information that we receive will be of assistance in the investigation,” said the policeman.

Feline injection­site sarcomas – how real is the risk?

SOME of you might have heard of the phenomenon of cats developing sarcomas or malignant tumours at the sites of previous vaccinations.

Certain individuals and websites may even have used this to terrify you into not vaccinating your cat.

Let’s talk facts then: 1) Rabies is a 100% fatal disease of HUMANS transmitted mainly by dogs and much less frequently by cats; annual vaccination is MANDATORY in KZN 2) Feline leukaemia is rife in SA

amongst sick cats; some overseas studies show low prevalence (<2%) in the general cat population that jumps to 20% in sick cats; so being FeLV negative protects cats from trips to the hospital for many causes 3) Only 4% of animals in KZN are vaccinated against rabies – thus the risk to animals and humans is IMMENSE. SA isn’t Surrey (UK) or Copenhagen – there are no boundaries between urban and rural populations (of humans and animals) and thus we are all at risk and vaccina-

ILLCREST residents are now breathing a sigh of relief as the Inanda Road Bridge has finally been repaired and opened for use.

The Department of Transport's Nathi Sukazi says he is pleased that the department was able to reach its target.

"We really have to thank the members of the community in the Hillcrest area for exercising patience during the repairing of the road,” he ex-

plained.

“A lot of work went in to it in spite of the rain, but we are very aware that it’s a busy road so it had to be done as quickly as possible," he added.

Renita Smith a resident of Waterfall was extremely pleased with the swift reaction by the department in

completing the bridge.

“The traffic on the inroads during peak hours was a nightmare. I am so pleased that the repairs have been done;nowwecanallgobacktotravelling on our normal routes.”

Smith thanked the department for their speedy action.

Since my original complaint I have received numerous complaints from residents regarding this property," said Crouch.

"There is a lack of communication in this municipality, there is no follow up and no report back to the complainant from the relevant department. They really need to work on this."

After fruitlessly casting five or six times, I noticed two disturbing things. My reel was irrevocably trapped in reeds and no amount of pulling was extricating it, and I had sunk, boots and all, up to my knees in mud, bringing a whole new meaning to being a stick-in-the-mud.

Remembering my orders, I waved frantically at my friend, who merrily waved back and skilfully recast his rod. Help, I realised, was not at hand. I gingerly attempted to extricate my right foot from the mud, and to my surprise I lifted it out quite easily.

IKE Hardwich is a dedicated vet who has worked with wild and do­ mestic animals for more than forty years. He assists whenever the need arises and has an extraordinary rapport with all living things.

This is perhaps best summed up by the late Sam Ngwena, who spent 40 years in all working for various vets as an assistant and the last six of his life working with Hardwich: “Mike is a white African who under­ stands animals like no other. His spirit calms them; he knows no fear and never panics. He makes our really difficult work seem easy. We seldom have to restrain an animal patient; there is a calming spirit in our practice because of him.”

As a country vet whose territory covers the rich valleys and farmland of KwaZulu­

Natal, his clients range from cattle farmers to owners of domestic pets, from game ranchers to circuses. The demands on a vet areconstantandoftenarriveatveryincon­ venient times. Called upon day and night, Hardwich brings to each case his skills, in­ genuity and years of experience, and al­ though he never loses sight of his aim of preserving and improving the lives of the animals he is called upon to treat, some­ times he is sorely challenged by their own­ ers.

Whether he is describing the difficult birth of a two­headed calf, discovering sheep scab on the Isle of Man, caring for Dorothy the elephant in her declining years, or helping Reggie the rat’s grieving owner accept his impending demise, Hard­ wich’s compassion and pragmatic humour never seem to flag.

HisenjoyabletalesinTheRhinoandthe Rat ­ Further Memoirs of a Vet, detailing

the trials, tribulations and triumphs of a veterinarian, who always sleeps with one ear cocked, will leave you wanting more.

Hardwich has also started a non­profit organisation called the Dr Mike Hardwich Foundation. He said that approximately 80 per cent of South African pets have no access to veterinary care. “This is a fright­ ening figure, and with this comes the un­ controlled breeding of unwanted puppies and to a lesser extent kittens,” he said.

“I was made aware of the need to steri­ lise animals in underprivileged areas. The figures given to me were of great concern, with many of the welfare organisations in KwaZulu­Natal sterilising less than 100 animals per month. This means that the impact, in real terms, is minimal.”

It was then that Hardwhich and his vet­ erinary assistant began the sterilisation of up to 20 animals per day. “The hospital wasundernopressureandbestprocedures

were followed – every animal was steri­ lised using the same procedures used for any other operation and in accordance with parameters laid down by the South African Veterinary Council,” he said. “In ad­ dition the animals were all vaccinated and dewormed. Where mange was found they were also treated for this with follow­up treatment.”

“The cost to the pet owner was NOTHING – and no further visitations were necessary because all sutures used were dissolvable.”

The foundation’s purpose is: >>To vaccinate and deworm the pets be­ longing to the disadvantaged. >>To sterilise such pets at no cost to the owners. >>To reach out to the school children in underprivileged areas and educate them with regard to the care and husbandry of their pets.

The only criteria for this year’s competition was that the isiZulu word, "Siyakhanya" meaning “We are Shining’’ needed to be incorporated in the song.

Pereira also performed this song with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra at the 30th Celebration of the Rotary Club of Kloof’s Durban Pops in Association with Adapt IT. According to Pereira, it was easy to come up with the subject matter for the songwhichfocusesonthefuturegeneration of South Africa coming together as one.

Youth Choir, but turned this opportunity down to join the SA Orchestra who participatedintheWorldYouthGames, held in Russia in 1998.

AppearingonTVasasoloistwiththe KZN Youth Choir, receiving a master class from world-renowned pianist, Isabelle Stengall, obtaining the highest Royal School of Music grade 8 marks in the province as well as being the recipient of the Silberberg Violin Loan are highlights of Pereira’s music career.

Other achievements include winning the International Roodepoort Festival of Arts competition for her violin recital.

Pereirawentontoreleaseasingleinthe UK in 2008 for a children’s charity and being interviewed by Radio Hampshire.

She then performed at the Cobden Club and Sound Café in London.

Pereira is currently the owner and director of The Music Studio in Hillcrest and this year has been made a Director of the KwaZulu-Natal area for the South African Championships of Performing Arts.

All profits from the Great Gatsby themed event will be allocated to projects undertaken by the Rotary Club of Kloof, with the main beneficiary being S.M.I.L.E (St Mary's Interactive Learning Experience).

S.M.I.L.E is a community-based organisation that evolved as a result of an urgent need in education to develop the English language skills of isiZulu speaking learners and their teachers.

Vergenoegd 2004 The Vergenoegd is a classic Bour­ deaux blend reflecting the unique terroir and winemaking philosophy of Vergenoegd. Usually a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The vines are plantedinamixtureoffertilealluvial soils along the banks of the Eerste River and more sandy soil with cal­ careous layers. The wine is Rich al­ most inky appearance with nice ripe red berry and plum fruit.

It has spicy vanilla scents with a hint of coffee and chocolate on the nose. It is a sweet structured forceful wine, but with characteristic ele­ gance and finesse. Big smooth tan­ nins with good length.

Cabernet Sauvignon 1999 This wine is blended from various Cabernet Sauvignon blocks ageing from 10 to 17 years planted in sandy top soil over a deep clay base layered with calcareous deposits. This re­ stricts yields naturally and together with the cooling False Bay winds the grapes ripen easily without losing too much of their natural acids.

CURRO Hillcrest Christian Academy held their Save the Rhino Art Fundraiser last Thursday.

Pupils from foundation phase to grade seven created magnificent art work, from recycled materials. Head of arts and culture, Kerry Robert said that the art pieces the children created showed their love for one Mother Nature’s big five and also the pupils, creativity and talents.

Parents and teachers were asked to purchase the work and all funds raised will be donated towards the South African Wildlife Fund.

In April this year, four pupils from Hillcrest High visited the beautiful town of Lennestadt and the school is currently playing host to six pupils from the Gymnasium. This programme has enabled pupils from both countries to experience family life in anoth-

HILLCREST High School held its Senior Awards evening at which it celebrated the achievements of its senior pupils recently.

Guest speaker, Matthew Willman, freelance documentary photographer and commissioned photographer to the Nelson Mandela Trust, delighted his audience with snippets from his illustrious career as well as his moving story of his own life journey.

Sinmiloluwa Onyebilanma is this year's Dux of the school, receiving nine academic awards,followedbyThembelihleMagutshwa, Proxime Accesit Dux and Priyanka Sivlal who placed third in Grade 12.

All three pupils were re-awarded with Honours cum Laude.

Bianca Westwood was also re-awarded Honours cum Laude while Bathandekile Ntuli, Guy Salomon and Caylin Sprighton were awarded Honours cum Laude for 2013.

This year's Best All-Round Sportsman is Robin Smith, Best Senior All-Round Sportswoman is Vanessa Atkinson.

The trophy for excellence in a sport not offered by the school is Bradley Fenton, Motocross champion and winner of the 2013 FIM Motocross of African Nations Intercontinental event.

Testing his endurance

PPER Highway’s 16-year-old Travis Teasdale has competed in many forms of dirt bike racing in his short career – from motocross to the Junior Off-road Championship and enduro races.

However, he will tackle the ‘Roof of Africa’ which takes place in Lesotho for the first time this year.

This extreme enduro race is renowned as one of the toughest and most gruelling motorcycle events in the world and is the race for many riders – young and old.

Racing for Team Brother Broadlink KTM, Teasdale has dreamed about competing in the ‘Roof of Africa’ from an early age, but he had to wait until after his 16th birthday in July for his dream to materialise.

This year he won his second Junior National Off-road Championship title (he won the 125cc ClassChampionshiptitlelastyearandtheOpen ClassChampionshipthisyear)andclinchedthe E2(200cc)ClassatthefinalroundoftheLiquorland SA National Enduro Motorcycle Championship at Matatiele where he finished third overall.

About 600 motorcycle riders have entered for this three-day race – only 400 entries were accepted – that consists of various mountain

passes and routes where no motorcycle competitor has ventured before.

Teasdale will be one of 120 entrants from all over the globe who will tackle the race in the Gold Class where riders have to complete the full race distance.

After the exhilarating street race, the youngster will travel with his crew to Bushman’s Pass to the north-east of Roma where all the racing action for the next three days will take place.

He will not only aim to finish the race, but he will hope to prove himself against some of the world’s best extreme enduro riders including the 2011 race winner from the UK, Graham Jarvis, as well as former triple winner from New Zealand, Chris Birch.

He will also compete against his good friend and rival from Paddock in KwaZulu-Natal, Wade Young, who made history last year when he became the youngest winner of this event at the age of 16.

The ‘Roof of Africa’ is about the rider and his machine versus nature and some of the most feared mountain passes where even the goats and donkeys tread with care, but Teasdale is prepared and ready for the challenge.

The event kicks off this weekend in Lesotho..
