ESKOM scam uncovered >> Con artists prey on the elderly FEVER REPORTER

S

CAM artists, masquerading as Eskom employees, have been trying to get into the homes of pensioners. Thecon artists appear to be trying to get credit card details or attempting to get a detailed layout of the houses and security measures. Police and security companies have received reports of the scam in Kloof, Hillcrest and Waterfall. THIS IS HOW THE SCAM WORKS: >>The pensioners first receive a phone call from a person purporting to be an accredited Eskom solar renewable energy agent. >>They then set up appointments tomeetthepensioners in the evening and at their homes. >> Once there they take photo-

graphs of the interior and exterior of the houses, and promise huge discounts on solar installations. Pensioner Heather Schneemann (67) from Waterfall said she was promised a saving of R70 000 off her electricity bill over five years if she bought their product. “They phoned about a month ago for the fourth time after having missed three appointments. The woman on the phone pleaded with me. She said she was accredited with Eskom. “She knew my address and arrivedat5.30 pm.Itwasdarkoutside.” The pensioner clearly remembers the woman as someone in her 30s, neatly presentable, with Mediterranean features, who was ‘effervescent and flamboyant’. Cracking down on drug dealers >> Police uncover new lethal super drug KALISHA NAICKER

>>kalisha@witness.co.za

P

OLICE have uncovered a “lethal super drug” when they acted on a tip-off and raided a drug dealer’s home at the Embo Reserve in Hillcrest last Thursday. According to Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, lieutenant MF Mkhize, the man who was arrested is part of an on-going operation to eradicate organised crime and the illegal drug trade in the Upper Highway area. He said that the discovery of the super drug, which resembles whoonga (cream straws) is a “real concern”. However, Mkhize could not determine the exact concentration and what the drug is made of as it has to be sent for full analysis. "We assure the public that these drugs are a lethal cocktail and this once again demonstrates the dangers of organised crime within the community,” he explained. Mkhize said that police are taking a zero tolerance approach to drugs in the highway area and are committed to the fight against drugs and organised crime. “Our bust this week should send a clear message to drug dealers and organised criminals across the district that they can expect a visit from us soon,” he said. “We are going to hunt them down and arrest each and every one of them.” Hillcrest station commander Colonel Thandeka P Mbele commended the police and the community of Hillcrest, following the arrest. Mbele said: “We are pleased to learn about this arrest, which by the way did not come as a result of only police intelligence intervention but importantly through the community participation.” She said that the Highway community took

The raw diet debate continues

August 23, 2013

hillcrest

FEVER

AFTER my raw food rant a few months back, a very polite client wrote me a very sweet but pointed letter related to raw food versus pet food. The letter stated that 94% of pets are on raw food. There’s a tongue-in-cheek phrase which says “94% of all statistics are made up at the time”, and this was definitely one of those cases. I am a trained nutritionist, and spent almost a year in England running a nutritional helpline for

vets, owners and nurses. In addition, I have formulated diets and helped difficult patients with conflicting medical/dietary needs. I’m not just some Joe Soap with a box and an opinion. With 14 years of university and seven years experience as a specialist physician, I am widely knowledgeable about what is good for pets and what is not. Here is a list of what is harmful in raw pet food: Leptospira, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Taenia,

Toxoplasma, Neospora, E. coli and Shigella – all of these have potentially fatal consequences. Need I continue? Here is a list of what is harmful in a premium, closed-formula diet like, say Hill’s or Eukanuba: Nothing. The average lifespan and survival rate of a dog in the wild, eating raw food states that 70 percent will die before reaching one year, and that 90 percent will die before five years.

A domestic dog eating a diet such as Hill’s or Eukanuba, on the other hand, lives an average of 11 years. I know what I’d choose for my pets. The choice is yours, but so are the consequences. Dr Anthony Zambelli Inanda Veterinary Hospital & Specialist Referrals 15 Howick Drive Waterfall

Child shocked to death >> Community says poor service delivery forces them to use illegal connections KALISHA NAICKER

kalisha@witness.co.za

P

OLICE have launched a manhunt for a Gillitts man, claiming to be an electrician, whose illegal electricity connection resulted in the death of a three-year-old boy at the Stockville Informal Settlement last Thursday. The child was playing in his aunt’s yard with his five-year-old cousin when the incident occurred. According to the child’s aunt and family spokesperson, Nondo Noholoza, it is alleged that he touched a wire that was illegally connected to a power line and had cables jutting out. As news of the tragedy spread, angry residents flocked to the scene where the child’s motionless body lay with the illegal wires in full view. With tears streaming down her face,Noholoza saidthe family cannot come to terms with the child’s death. She said that the children are alwayswarnedabout the electricity cables in the area, and this is the first death that has occurred. “When we moved to the area, a man offered us electricity connection

for R70 and we agreed,” said the grieving aunt. “We knew it was dangerous, but had no other choice as we needed the power.” She said on many occasions they called the children and showed them the wires and explained the danger to them. Noholoza, like many other residents of the community, lamented the fact that the illegal wire is clearly visible and the councillor of the area does nothing to rectify the situation. “We appealed for legal electricity on numerous occasions, but nothing has been done so we continue to use illegal power,” she said. “I hope this tragedy will not be swept under the rug, and the community of Stockville Informal Settlement will be given service delivery.” Lieutenant MF Mkhize, communications officer for Hillcrest SAPS, said that police have taken a zero tolerance approach to illegal electricity connections in the area, and all those with illegal connection will be charged or imprisoned. “Although we sympathise with the family for their loss, illegal elec-

tricity connections are against the law. It is theft and perpetrators will be charged,” he said. “We are also appealing to the residents to provide information to us, so that the individual conducting such power connections will be apprehended.” In a separate incident during the weekend of 11 August seven shacks were gutted due to illegal electricity connections, leaving 16 people desperate and homeless at another part of the informal settlement. Ward 10 (Kloof) councillor Rick Crouch said: “People have to be educated as to both the legality and the danger of using illegal electricity,” “The people who are charging to connect the illegal electricity should be arrested and charged because by extension they are responsible for both the death of the little boy and the people left homeless.” Crouch said that he would be contacting the municipality to provide legal connections for residents. To report illegal electricity connections or aid the police in their investigations, contact Hillcrest SAPS on 031 765 9103.

Forest Hills thief nabbed

A BURGLAR was apprehended after he broke into a home in Forest Hills on Sunday, 4 August. ADT Security Armed Response Officer, Joel Ndlovu, apprehended the man who was still at the house and handed him over to local police after he responded to an alarm activation in Valley Drive. A bag containing five wrist watches, a belt and a brooch was recovered.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect gained entry to the property after he removed a concrete slab that was used to secure a rear window and broke the pane. Home owner, John Terblanche, praised ADT for their swift response and dedication. “An ordinary worker would probably have dismissed this as a faulty alarm system at some stageandeventuallyignoredit,” he said.

OTORISTS travelling along Fields Hill bordering Pinetown and Kloof were relieved when the huge potholes were fixed, but months later the road is still not marked. It has been months since the resurfacing of the road, but the new surface has not been marked as yet causing traffic chaos. This makes travelling on the motorway extremely dangerous especially at night, forcing motorist to judge by sight and ensure they are driving in the correct lane, and often leaves them straddling two lanes simultaneously. A truck driver from Clermont, Chris Ndlovo who often travels on Fields Hill, said he was pleased when the Department of Transport (DOT) decided to resurface the road. However, the lack of markings is making travelling very dangerous. “This road is very busy and with the amount of traffic passing through here daily, there is a desperate need for road markings,” he explained. Ndlovu said at nights he battles to see which lane he is travelling on, and often cars hoot behind him as he straddles between lanes. He said that it is difficult to judge the lanes while driving a truck and this often endangers the lives of other road users and himself when guessing which lane is the correct one. Another irate motorist Mr D Naidoo who works in the Upper Highway area, travels on Fields Hill daily and said it is a nightmare to

drive along the highway during peak hour traffic. “Withpeopleovertakingandinahurrytoget to work or home, the unmarked roads along Fields Hill are becoming more dangerous to travel on,” he said. “On many occasions, I have swerved to avoid other vehicles from crashing into me. I am grateful that the road was resurfaced, yet I am appealing to the department to stop dragging their feet and complete the job as soon as possible before a fatality occurs.” However, eThekwini municipality spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng appealed to motorists to be patient with the department as there are a few necessary adjustments that need to be conducted before the road is permanently marked. “There are sections of road that need to be shapedaccordinglytoaccommodatethetrucks and bridges which delayed the markings,” he explained. “However, this will be completed within the next few weeks and I appeal to the motorists in the interim to be patient and drive cautiously,” added Mofokeng. Ward 18 councillor Tim Brauteseth said that he is aware of the situation along Fields Hill and has appealed to the Department of Transport to allocate temporary markers on the road. “I truly empathise with motorists on this issue. It is practically impossible to see where the road surface starts and ends at night and is extremely dangerous,” said Brauteseth. “I will be appealing to the departmenttourgentlyaddresstheissuewithsuitable temporary measures.”

Scouts maintain “roots” in Hillcrest

KALISHA NAICKER THE life of a 20-year-old Albizina tree, destined to be cut due to the widening of Inanda Road, was saved when the Hillcrest Scouts stepped in and had it transplanted last week. Steve Camp, chairman of 1st Hillcrest scouts,whoco-ordinatedthisprojecttold the Fever that too often street trees are cut down to make way for new developments such as widening of roads and new buildings. He said the scouts were not going to stand back

“Lovemore Brothers loaned the 15 tonne crane and low bed rig at no cost so that we could transport the tree.” Camp said the operation took hours before the tree had been moved to its new home and placed in its newly dug hole at the 1st Hillcrest scout grounds, yet no one gave up. “The scouts and I were determined to savethetreeandwepersisteduntilitwas done,” he said. “Our urban forest around Hillcrest is made up of our streets and garden trees and we need to look after them and protect them. When these trees are cut, all

and watch a part of the neighbourhood “be killed”. Camp said the scouts relocated the tree three kilometres down the road and transplanted it at their scout hall. “It was quite an undertaking to transplant and relocate this 20-year-old indigenous tree, which had to be carefully supervised by a horticulturalist to ensure the root ball was protected while digging it out,” he explained. “It was fantastic the way everyone wanted to help. Martin and East, the construction company that is widening Inanda Road, provided a digger.

the benefits of having these trees along our roads will disappear as well,” added Camp. Kevin Dolloway from Lady Bird landscapes who assisted in the project thanked all for assisting and saving the tree, “We started to dig two days before it was to be moved and had to wrap the root ball in plastic cling wrap to hold the soil binding the root.” “Finally this beautiful tree has been moved, and I thank everyone that assisted in every way possible.” For more information on the scouts or to join the group, contact 079 391 1866.

He has unravelled crimes and put his life on the line to make a difference to the city. Nathanson’s ambition is to rid Durban of violent criminals so that law-abiding citizens can sleep peacefully. and upholding law and order in the community. He is now president of Brad Nathanson Investigations, but this modern-day hero started his career by standing up for what he believed in. His father was adamant that he should learn a trade, but the young Nathanson knew which path he wanted to take - law enforcement, and he eventually convinced his father to allow him to write the South African Police Service Exam in 1980. “After completing Police College in Pretoria, I moved on to the Anti-Terrorist Reaction Unit, going on to write the Detective Course Exam in 1983,” he said. “I spent five years as a detective, honing my skills and learning from the best the force had to offer.” In 1988 Nathanson decided he had alltheskillsand knowledge he needed to go it alone. He then set up his private detective agency and quickly made a name for himself in the Upper Highway area where he took rising crime rate in his stride.

Describing himself as brave, Nathanson said that he is not selective about the types of law-breakers he targets. “My work ranges from VIP protection, cheating spouses and domestic violence, to housebreakings, rape and murder.” He said that his most memorable VIP job was when he was asked to accompany talk show host Oprah Winfrey on her last trip to South Africa. “Oprah’s giving nature, especially when bestowed on the less fortunate inourcountry, made that job an emotional roller coaster ride from start to finish,” he explained. The father-of-four said that he owes all of his success to his supportive wife and family. Nathanson said that being a private investigator is no walk in the park. “I will never be able to please everybody, but for those that I do please and the gratitude that I receive, its enough to keep me moving forward.” To find out more about this inspirational crime fighter, email brad@bradnathanson.co.za.

Democracy - South African style THE trouble with elections – the national election is set for May next year – is that they bring out the most devious plots, especially among those who hold the keys to the treasuries of the various tiers of government. Take KwaZulu-Natal’s Transport department as an example. This department has budgeted R12 million for functions to celebrate bridge openings, sod turnings and wellness days in the run up to the 2014 elections. That is R12m for the MEC to go swanning around the province, handing out largesse to various communities and reminding them on which side they should perceive their bread as being buttered. When Finance MEC Ina Cronje presented the province’s budget she warned all departments they would have to cut back severely on all unnecessary expenditure, especially those “catering for external meetings, workshops and events”. Presumably the Transport department has done this, but still intends to spend R12m on such fripperies. But the temptation to gain votes at any cost is just too great. Politicians will happily spend taxpayers’ money on fine food, huge marquees and much rahrah with subtle, or sometimes not so subtle, exhortations for voters to put their crosses government candidates who are bringing them the new bridge or whatever, because they are committed to delivery. Inthemeantime, thelotoftheordinarypersongets worse by the day. Jobs are becoming increasingly scarce, food costs are soaring, the petrol price is rocketing (not entirely the government’s fault admittedly) and too many people wallowing in poverty. Instead of spending the money where it is needed most, prepare for a long list of vote-getting functions among the people. The province’s MEC will spend largeamountonadvertisingjustaboutanythingfrom strange workshops to house handovers, while the eThekwini mayor’s face will be plastered all over the place for any reason at all, promising Durban’s people heaven and earth with little detail as to how it will be delivered and who will pay for it. Then, after the flutter of elections, everything will slump back to the daily grind and only the chosen few will emerge smiling all the way to the bank.

JUST as the Israelites in the old testament worshipped Idols, I have fallen prey to the Idols storm which has taken South Africa by storm. The terrible part is that it’s not the golden ticket winners that have me hooked. It’s the other ones...the wooden mic contenders. They have grabbed hold of the sarcastic sadist who lives deep within my soul. Let me start by saying I’m not a hypocrite. As an amateur (and very average), stand-up comedian, I know what it’s like to stand on a stage. Any guy or girl who stands on a stage in front of Randall Abraham and Gareth Cliff has balls. And for that, theyhavemyrespect.Ontheother hand, what on God’s green earth possesses some of these wannabes to believethattheycansing?I’mthefirst to admit I cannot sing, and, as a selfconfessedcouchpotato,Iwouldsooner run the Comrades than enter Idols. Amongallthecroakers, squeakers and breaking voices to which Unathi Msengana and her judging counterparts have been subjected, the one thatstandsoutthemostisthegirlwho stripped off her trench coat to reveal a bikini while declaring her love, lust or affection to Gareth Cliff. Overandabovenaturallyrejecting her, Gareth went on to comment on the teensy bit of extra weight that she was carrying around her midriff – which was cruel even if perhaps deserved under the circumstances. Anotherentrant, whosenamealso escapesme, leftthestageafterarightfully unsuccessful audition, went to the bathroom and cried her heart out. Ifyoudon’twantyourtearsandheartbreak broadcasted on national television, for pete’s sake don’t do this. As a wooden mic contender, your anguish becomes a nation’s amusement. I’m not an advocate for giving anybody false hope. I’m also aware that the Idols judges are paid to entertain the nation. However, the oftcruel words uttered by the judges seem unnecessary sometimes. This struck me particularly when the desire for an ability to blast contestants from the stage at will was expressed. To borrow a quote from Yeats, tread softly, Randall and Gareth, for you tread on their dreams. Fellow Idols-lovers, don’t forget to vote for your favourite contestant. For it is the revenue drawn from our SMSes which will ensure that we will have the opportunity to sing along, praise and ridicule from the sanctity of our comfort zones again next year.

VONDELING BALDRICK SHIRAZ 2011 The vineyards for the Balrick Shiraz are planted on well weathered granite derived soils on south and southeast facing slopes. In total six clones of Shiraz were planted, all making different contributions to the final wine. The wine is a rich deep purple and has a profoundly perfumed aroma with floral notes of violets. The shiraz provides the heart and soul in the form of palate volume, dark fruit, subtle pepper and other exotic spices. Simply put, this wine was tailormade to excite your taste buds. Baldrick Shiraz can be enjoyed with a multitude of dishes such as fillet mignon with crème de cassis or can simply be enjoyed with a Sunday roast, mash and gravy.

Petit Rouge 2011 The Petit Rouge vineyards used for this blend are planted in a combination of wellweathered granite soils and beautiful “koffie klip” (shale) slopes. The Merlot vineyards are planted exclusively on granite-derived, southwest facing slopes. The wine is ruby red with an elegant fruit profile on the nose and includes the aroma of cherries, raspberry and spicy black pepper. The petit rouge can be enjoyed at many levels, but goes exceptionally well with a traditional South African braai of wors and chops. Alternatively try a winter dish of slow-roasted, marrow- enriched oxtail casserole with fresh farm-style bread.

TRANSNET and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife have been in talks about the relocation of thousands of dwarf chameleons. It was recently reported in the Fever that a R24 billion capex investment in KwaZulu-Natal and 64 000 construction jobs were estimatesoftwoofthekeyimpactsthattheprojected new Durban Dig-Out Port (DDOP) were expected to deliver over the next seven to 10 years. But, before any of these plans can proceed some thought has to be given to the colony of dwarf chameleons which live on the land which Transnet is to develop into the proposed DDOP. According to Joseph McMahon from Transnet, biodiversity studies of the area where the newDurbanDig-OutPortistobe,revealedthat thelandishabitattojustover2 000KZNDwarf Chameleons. Not millions, though, as another publication recently reported. That makes it the biggest sub-population of the species in KZN. After Transnet bought the land in 2012, a series of engineering, sustainability and environmental studies were conducted to identify any fatal flaws, concerns or red flags. “An assessment was made by an independent company that specialises in environmental planning and rehabilitation, toestablish the number of chameleons, their habitat and what the potential is for relocating them and where to. In view of this information, meetings with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife will determine the next steps in the proposed relocation process,” says McMahon. Usually a relocation programme is undertaken over a period of consecutive nights until no more chameleons are found. They are captured by hand and placed into separate cardboard boxes. They normally occur in male-female pairs and every effort is made to transport the pairs together. The chameleons are then released on capture night into the new environment, evenly distributed over the release areas. The yet to be identified release areas will be rehabilitated and ready to receive the chameleons by the time of relocation. “I am very excited about working on this project,” says McMahon. In the meantime, these little guys are sitting tight on the proposed DDOP land, totally unaware of the numerous meetings and careful planning surrounding their future.

According to Joseph

McMahon from Transnet, biodiversity studies of the area where the new Durban Dig-Out Port is to be, revealed that the land is habitat to just over 2 000 KZN Dwarf Chameleons.

enjoyed by everyone and not only a select few. This is in Vaseline’s best interest as we know Springbok supporters are our consumersandwewantthemtohavethebest experience possible at the game.” “Secondly as the proud skin care sponsor of the Springboks we wanted to find a way to meet our marketing objectives, while still having the opportunity to give something back to the game of rugby. In our opinion it’s a three-way-win for Vaseline, the fans and the game, and we hope the public gets 100% behind the initiative.”

As part of the campaign, the Vaseline Fan Stand will be set up at all three home tests in the Castle Rugby Championship, where fans can take a quick five-question survey to determine what type of fan they are and pledge their support to tackle dirty play off the field. Anyone who completes the short survey and pledges to uphold the Fan of The Match values will be automatically entered into a draw for instant prizes. These include Vaseline grooming kits, autographed mini rugby balls, iPod Nanos, signed Springbok jerseys and the grand

motoring Fuel saving tips WITH the increasing price of petrol, motorists are having to dig deeper into their wallets before starting the engine of their cars. There are many ways you can reduce your fuel consumption. Here are some fuel-saving tips: Check your tyre pressure – Ensuring you have the correct tyre pressure can have a massive impact on fuel consumption as well as handling. Low tyre pressure can cause blowouts. Trim the ‘fat’ - Weight can be another factor in increased fuel consumption as well as affecting your vehicle’shandling.Unloadunnecessary items from your car. Don’t rubberneck - Many drivers are tempted to slow down and have a look at an accident on the side of the road but doing so causes others following to slow down for no reason. All those vehicles then have to accelerate to get going, wasting fuel in the process. Don’t drive angry – This is easiersaidthandone, especially in traffic but angry driving burns more fuel. Burning out at traffic lights or weaving between lanes results in unnecessary acceleration and fuel use. New-age Almera offers class leading space in the long run with poor fuel consumption. If you wait too long to have your vehicle serviced your may end up having to fork over thousands to your mechanic. Plan your journey - A wrong turn could lead to extra kilometres added to your journey resulting in burning more fuel. Rushing out to the shops three or four times over a weekend also impacts your pocket. Draw up a shopping list and ensure you complete all your errands in one trip. A carefully planned journey can save you money.

THE all-new Nissan Almera is now available in South Africa, bringing stylish design and exceptional value together in one complete package. The South African market forms part of the 170globalmarketswherethenewAlmera is marketed. “The all-new Nissan Almera isanextremelyimportantnewcarforNissan in South Africa, where the B-segment is the largest and fastest-growing segment in the market,” says Janico Dannhauser, product manager for passenger vehicles at Nissan South Africa. “ With its bold new de-

With the new Almera, Nissan will certainly continueitsreputationforprovidingaffordability and reliability.” Large exterior dimensions, a spacious interior and a big boot – three key design points which dictated the development of the new Almera. This is well-designed vehicle inside and out, with class-leading rear legroom and luggage capacity in particular, as well as a functional cabin – all at an exceptionally affordable price. The attractive, modular interior design is ergonomically sound with high perceived quality and textured surfaces geared to creating a relaxing and comfortable driving environment. Dashboard surfaces have been manufactured with an evolved texture design which is geared to reduce glare from sunlight into thedriver’seyesaswellaswindscreen reflections. The new Almera has also been designed with practicality in mind, the interior featuring no less than threemajorstoragecubby holes. There are also a total of four cup or bottle holders. Of course, the boot is its biggest feature, the new Almera featuring a massive, class-leading 490 litres of luggage space.

With a deep loading area, a low loading sill and smooth surfacing inside, the boot appeals on all levels, no matter what the intended purpose of the new Almera. The Almera is available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine. The 1 498 cc unit produces a healthy 73 kW of power at 6 000 rpm and 134 Nm of torque at 4 000 rpm. The low-emission and efficient engine allows the five-speed manual version of the new Nissan ALMERA to achieve average combined cycle fuel economy of 6.3-litres per 100 km, the four-speed automatic variant achieving 7.2. Carbon emissions for both models are 149 g/km and 171 g/km respectively. The already compact engine has been redesigned and repackaged for the new car, various components including the air filter, fuel hose and intake manifold being adaptedtosuitthecompactnatureofthe Almera’senginebay–whichhasbeendesigned around minimal proportions in order to maximise interior space. Contributing further to driving enjoyment, handling and NVH, torsional stiffness of the new Almera has been heightened thanks to reinforcement particularly towards the rear where the parcel shelf, therearseatcrossmemberandseat-back V-brace make significant differences. So too do the crease lines on the roof of the new Almera, which contribute to a significant reduction in booming noise while driving – low frequency sounds and vibrations which worsen NVH levels. The ‘roof beads’ also contribute to better fuel consumption thanks to cleaner aerodynamics.

Pupils give back KALISHA NAICKER

Highbury pupils touched into their social responsibility side and donated 100kgs of dog food, 8kgs of cat food

and some cat toys to the Kloof and Highway SPCA recently. Class teacher Leon Manickum said that his pupils are very community driven and when given the opportunity at their recent fun day, they donned aprons, bowler hats and bow ties and waitered in the tea garden to raise funds for a charity close to their hearts (the SPCA). “Keeping with the 110 year Highbury celebrations they won the hearts of patrons who even paid to have photos taken with them,” said Manikum.

“These dedicated young men took turns waitering tables for tips and donations and ended up with just under R600 in takings. They also ran a class raffle and raised an additional sum which was all put towards the food.” HillcrestPetsowner,NigelMarlton, also came to the party and supplied all food at cost to the boys making their money stretch further. They also donated the cat toys. “Pets are very close to all their hearts and they were thrilled to present thefoodtotheSPCA,”addedoneofthe pupils, Reece Woodley.

ILLCREST High School has its origins at Hillcrest Primary School, where, for a number of years, the Grade 8 and 9 classes were accommodated. On 20 January 1976, the school opened its doors with an enrolment of 276 students and a staff of 18. Under the guidance of several visionary headmasters, the school today enjoys a fine reputation

in academics, sport and cultural activities. Current headmaster, Craig Girvin, has been with the school since 1985, when he was first appointed as a Geography teacher. Under his guidance, the school is regarded as progressive, constantly embracing new ideas to enhance the pupil’s learning experience. Girvin is passionate about broading the pupils’ horizons through international contact, and has encour-

aged pupil participation in the Global Young Leaders’ Conference held annually in the United States and the People to People International organisation of which Hillcrest High is the only active pupil chapter. In keeping abreast of changing societal needs, the school has introduced the use of digital devices in the classroom to supplement teaching techniques, again with excellent results. Speaking to the Hillcrest Fever,

Girvin said he had realised that pupils in this century could no longer be effectively educated by using traditional methods only. He said that digital technology would be used to enhance, and not replace, the classroom experience with technology that is second nature to its pupils. “Pupils at Hillcrest High have a wide range of academic, cultural and sporting activities from which to choose and, over the years, has pro-

duced many fine academics, athletes and entrepreneurs of whom we are exceptionally proud,” Girvin added. In 2009, Hillcrest High was placed in the Sunday Times Top 100 State High Schools and, more recently, it was ranked twelfth in Fair Lady’s list of the top 25 State Schools. It was the second school to qualify fortheDiscoverySharksmartSchools of Excellence Programme, to which the school remains committed. SPORT Andrew Neethling

NEETHLING set to challenge big guns >> Anticipation builds for the MTB champs

T

his year has been a difficult UCI MTB World Cup season for Highway’s men’s downhiller Andrew Neethling who has had to battle against injury throughout. However the local talent remains hugely positive heading into the biggest event of the year – the UCI MTB and Trials World Championships being held in Pietermaritzburg from 26 August to 1 September. Neethling recently competed at the fourth World Cup event of the year in Mont-SainteAnneinCanadawhereheclaimedasolideighth place, despite the difficult wet conditions. Many are hoping that this is a sign of the GiantFactoryOff-roadteammembercominginto some good form after a shaky start to his year. “It has been a bit of a roller-coaster season formesofar.Ihavesufferedafairfewbigcrasheswhichisnotnormalformeandhaveobviously been pretty frustrating,” South Africa’s second highest ranked downhill competitor said. “Fort William was solid for me but I had to sit out of round two after crashing heavily the morning of the race. “I’m healthy now though and I’m hoping to build up some momentum heading into the World Champs.” His eighth place in Canada has been his best

finish in the World Cup series this year which mightprovidehimwiththatmomentumthathe has been searching for. He has one more event to use as a fine tuning exercise before he heads back to his homeland for the start of the World Champs. “I have just finished the World Cup in MontSainte-Anne and now I have the Whistler Crankworks festival. Then after that I get a few days at home and then its World Champs,” the 29-year-old said. Having the home ground advantage could provetobebeneficialtoNeethlingandknowing the course well is another plus. “It is nice to know the course well from racing it in the past and I have not paid too much attention to the changes but I know the course builders are doing a great job. “I have been working hard for Worlds and to perform well at home has been a goal of mine throughout the season,” he added. Neethling has set himself the goal of winning a medal in Pietermaritzburg. “A medal is a dream of mine and I have my eyes on that – a medal or even top five and I will beextremelyhappy.”Formoreinformationvisit, www.mtbworldchamps.co.za.
