Gang digs up ‘TREASURE’ >> ‘R20 to R40 million’ buried in Winston Park

Winston Park homeowner Ricardo Fernandes discovered that a drug gang had returned to their own crime scene to dig up cash they had buried in barrels like this one.

Pirates of the suburbs The gang’s beds and furniture are still in the garage. Yesterday a buried “treasure chest” was uncovered, but all the cash was gone.

ROWAN PHILP MILLIONS in buried “treasure” is believed to have been dug up and stolen literally from under the feet of police - in the backyard of a plush suburban estate. And at least two police officers have reportedly turned into pirates themselves - having allegedly plundered a fortune in drugs from the same Winston Park crime scene.

O

n December 2 last year, The Witness -sister paper to Hillcrest Fever - reported on how police raided the Winston Park property at 50 Alexander Drive - seizing R41 million worth of drugs, and arresting 19 gang members who had turned the rented property into the biggest drug lab in KZN history. The horrified owner of the property - accountant Garron Stewart - told Weekend Witness he had sold the property in “a fire sale” even as police investigators were scouring the site for clues. On Friday, police declined to say whether they had located or interviewed Stewart’s listed tenant - known as “Strini”- but said no other arrests had yet been made in an ongoing hunt for the kingpins. However, roughly a week after the last investigator left, brazen members of the same gang returned to their own crime scene with picks and shovels and broke back in to steal the plunder which police had missed. They had hidden what is believed to be millions in cash in four blue, hand-made barrels - made from plastic 40 cm sewage pipe and buried them beneath some concrete walkway stones behind the granny flat. The new owner, Ricardo Fernandes, said the brigands had lifted the steel gate off its rails and left a garage door open, but that there was initially no indication that anything had been stolen from the property. Thenhenoticeddisturbed soil beneath four paving stones, and lifted them to discover the intruders had reburied the four barrels after removing their contents. He said that during a police inspection a police “currency” sniffer dog had indicated that the three dug-up barrels had contained “large amounts of cash”. Although Weekend Witness has no evidence to support the contention, Fernandes said he had been told by a Hawks investigator that “R20 to R40 million” in cash had been removed. Drugs could also have been stashed there. Fernandes (36) said the as-yet unidentified drug kingpin had chosen the “perfect spot”

both to bury and unearth his booty, since a two-metre retaining wall and a row of thick yellow bushes, called “Sheena’s Gold”, blocked the paving stones from the neighbours’ view. The buried treasure was 45 paces southeast of a large palm tree on the property, and 14 paces due west of a Greek statue in the garden. But Fernandes said the rogues only had to count eight walking stones to find the spot to dig for the first set of two cylindrical chests, and another six to the next set. Yesterday, there was a moment of excitement at the property when construction worker Martin Keswa dug up a fourth drug treasure barrel, which appeared to be filled with soil. However, Fernandes said he believed police had already checked the barrel and that it had been deliberately filled with soil - “so there’s unfortunately no treasure under there”. Fernandes admitted he would have tried to“claim”the cash if he had found the treasure first. “I would have moved to the Seychelles with my family and retired. Finders keepers, right?” Fernandes said that - because the transfer of the house was going through at the time-— he would have made an offer to Stewart to split the plunder. Stewart (44) said he was “in shock” to learn a fortune in illicit cash had been stashed in his backyard, but said, “I would have wanted nothing to do with it - aside from the fact that it’s evidence, these guys would probably have come after me if they found their stuff missing.”Meanwhile, inyetanothertwistinthesaga of 50 Alexander Drive, SAPS spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that police members were under investigation for allegedly stealing evidence from the property. “The case against the police members involved is still under investigation and no arrests have been made,” said Zwane. “An internal investigation is also underway.” Zwane declined to give details on the investigation into the unearthed barrels.

Tools of the trade – the stethoscope

February 21, 2014

The stethoscope is an essential veterinary diagnostic tool. Every clinical examination should include an “auscultation” of the heart and lungs (and sometimes the bowels). In order to hear properly, the room needs to be quiet. It’s a well-known “insidejoke”intheprofessionthatas soon as the vet puts on the earpieces, clients start talking – please DON’T! It drives us barmy!

Dr Anthony Zambelli Inanda Veterinary Hospital & Specialist Referrals www.inandavets.com 15 Howick Drive Waterfall 031 762 1816

The vet will auscultate the left and right sides of the heart to listen for leaking valves or turbulent flow (“murmurs”), the heart rate and rhythm. Sometimes, its loudness can indicate an enlarged heart, while a dull heart can indicate fluid around the heart, or air in the chest space (“pneumothorax”). All this is best done with the “bell”

side which picks up lower frequency sounds better. The vet will then use the larger, flat “diaphragm” side of the stethoscope to listen to lung sounds and breathing noises. You can help the vet in this by keepingyourpetcalmandquiet, and preventing panting by gentling closing the mouth (not the nostrils!). The vet should listen a minimum

of four – six breath cycles, in each region, to evaluate the lungs properly. Sometimers vets will also “percuss” the chest to check for air or solidified lung lobes. Auscultation with a rubbish stethoscope is worthless. I have two – one for cats, with a small head and a larger one for dogs, plus a digital one (to slow down rapid heart rates).

Man plunges off cliff

T

WO Kloof teenagers had to look on helplessly last Monday night as a man fell about 30 metres down a cliff at the Krant z kloof Nature Reserve. The victim, a 51-year-old man from Johannesburg, is currently fighting for his life in ICU after a gruelling four-hour rescue effort to bring him to safety. Speaking to The Fever from a plane to Durban, his wife said her husband drove all the way from Johannesburg to Kloof apparently after storming out of a meeting at work. He holds a senior position at a major retail bank. She then received a “concerning” SMS from her husband. It was around 9pm Monday night when she got a call from the emergency services telling her that he had been injured. The victim’s wife, a school teacher, said even though she could not sleep properly on Monday night, she did go to school before she could fly to visit her husband in hospital. She said her husband broke his hip and wrist. The two teenage friends who were instrumental in saving the man’s life were apparently admiring the view when the man parked his

According to an interview posted on SA CAN’s YouTube channel, one of the teenagers said the man tried handing them his keys and said they must give them to his friend.

“I got up and tried to get my friend, because he was leaning on us and we could have fallen over,” said one of them. She said her friend was unable to stop the man’s fall. They immediately called SA CAN, who con-

Jones was impressed by how the teenagers handled the situation and how the rescue team worked tirelessly throughout the night. “The young student, who is an SA CAN family member, was key to saving this life as part of our ongoing training of all our SA CAN family members to be SA CAN samaritans. “This is just yet another amazing example of the Together SA CAN approach with the community, including our youth,” Jones said. Rescue Tech spokesperson Nic Holmes, whose members were on the scene, said they first had to search for the man and then set up ropes for him to be hoisted up in a stretcher. Holmes believes that the man fell 30 metres. The whole operation lasted for about four hours. He said the rescue was rather challenging and technical due to the terrain and the surrounding bushes. “It was at night and hazardous and we couldn’t see clearly,” he said. He told The Fever that the man was not crying but was complaining about the pain. ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks confirmed that the man sustained a broken leg and possible back injuries. Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said, “a suicide note was also found” at the scene.

Shongweni Bridge to be repaired KALISHA NAICKER THE Shongweni Road bridge at exit 31 on the M13 is finally scheduled to be repaired.

Lilian Develing of the Hillcrest Ratepayers Association initially complained about the state of the bridge last year and in August met with David Bryan from the Department of Transport. He alleged the damage to the bridge had been caused by a vehicle which exceeded the height restrictions. However, Develing lobbied for repairs to start immediately. In a letter to the DoT she wrote, “Would you drive on the bridge in the full knowledge that the bridge is damaged or do something constructive to prevent an-

other occurrence of people being injured or killed?” “This bridge was hit by a crane that was being carried on a heavy vehicle, as was done to the bridge on the N3 in Pietermaritzburg some years back. “As the exposed rebar indicate surface corrosion - meaning that the damaged area is not new - the relevant defect has probably been registered and prioritised on the Bridge Management System. “However, due to the obvious insufficient vertical clearance - it is possible that the local damage has very recently

been increased - and thus requires urgent action,” she wrote. eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng confirmed that repairs to the bridge will commence in March and will be concluded in May 2014. “A single lane will be open to traffic on the Durban bound carriageway during the construction period. “All transport and freight companies utilising heavy vehicles are advised that the current clearance to the underside of the bridge is 4.5m. “It is also recommended that the heavy vehicles utilise the N3 as an alter-

N UPPER Highway resident is facing animal cruelty charges for allegedly beating his dog to death with a wooden pole and burying it in a shallow grave onhisproperty. According to Kloof and Highway SPCA manager Barbara Patrick, the society received a call on the SPCA after hours emergency number from a distressed member of the public. “The man, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that he had just witnessed his neighbour beating his dog. Inspector Petros Simamane immediately raced to the property in Kwadabeka,” she said. Sadly, the inspector was too late and found the dog’s lifeless body in a shallow grave. “Inspector Simamane recovered the body of the one-year-old female Africanis. “The individual responsible for brutally killing this helpless creature gave no reason for committing this crime - except to say that he was under the influence of alcohol,” said Patrick. She added that a case has been opened and the accused will be prosecuted in terms of the Animals Protection Act. “Thank you to Petros for your dedication and your determination in our fight against animal cruelty. We are hopeful that justice will be served,” added Patrick. Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident and said that the suspect was arrested on 11 February by the

Meiring said advanced life support was applied before the man was taken to hospital. Hospital general manager Dr Augusta Dorning said the man was in ICU and that no media access was permitted. “I am unable to release any details regarding this patient given our policy on patient confidentiality,” he said.

Close and disturbing encounters with the ‘Kinders van die mielies’ DESIREE ERASMUS To: The CEO, Suidlanders Dear Oom, am writing to express my disappointment that ‘Suidlanders’ has not issued even one quasi-hysterical and poorly penned press release as we near national elections. Your lack of Aryan-angst has left me hurt, confused and ostracised; much like a pre-1994 darkie. In an effort to find outwhat exactly has become of your organisation and its vast membership of nine, I visited your website on Monday where I was instantly left cold and shuddering at the crimes committed against spelling. To quote: “National en international nationalities of western descent, and people that worship our Father in heaven as the creator of heaven and earth are welkome to apply for Suidlander membership.”

I

Putting my prejudice aside after the above, and drawing on my keen army of black cadres, (scattered all over the province like little raisins waiting to explode) I attended what I am sure you were hoping was a clandestine Suidlanders opskop for youth recruitment over the weekend, which I heard of via Metro FM. I was much impressed with the woman checking tickets at the entrance. The combination of well defined biceps and a grenade-belt comforted me. When I told her that I had no tag, she asked me to step out of the car, put my hands on the bonnet and answer questions about something called Die Stem. I did as she said but informed her curtly that I hadn’t much time to talk about wilting flower-parts. I then asked her to kindly release her meaty knee from my bum cheek. She complied with a wink. As I climbed back into the car she noticed my domestic, Mavis, in the passenger seat. Before she had time to quiz Mavis on stems and other salad ingredients, I heard a whizzing sound pass my ear followed by a thwack and saw the lass drop to the ground like a prop

diving for a Steers burger. I turned to Mavis and noticed she had something in her mouth. I told her to stop playing silly-buggers with her pea-shooter and poison darts; couldn’t she see there was an epileptic white supremacist in our midst? I again climbed out of the car, manoeuvred the unconscious she-prop against a medium-sized arms cache, pulled up her safari-socks, pried the bottle of Klippies from her hand, took a swig, slapped her twice because of her fashion sense and returned to the vehicle, only to find Mavis ululating while hitching home. Evidently this piece of investigative work was something I would have to tackle alone. I drove a little further, found a parking spot between two Venter trailers and followed a trail of rusk crumbs to a shed. I pushed open the door and the hair on my feet shot-up. Before me stood 12-year-olds in khaki uniforms with embroidered swastikas, Goose stepping around a flaming coil of boerewors. I was outraged by the sight as I am a believer of twerking instead of Goose stepping at gatherings. When they eventually caught

sight of me, the pubescents broke into a low hum and started marching my way. I twerked to the left, twerked to the right, threw in a tap session but still they advanced. I began inching backwards in a slow twerk only to step on an eight-year-old with ample facial hair. She cocked her 9mm. Realising that my X-Factor-like dance attempts meant nothing to her, I slowly retrieved a DVD of The Incredible Hulk from my secret socks. It once kept Julius Malema silent for 90 minutes at Polokwane. I handed the DVD to her. “Shrek!” she screamed excitedly. I made my way to the exit as she Goose stepped to the TV with the other Children of the Corn/Kinders van die Mielies. Oom, by exposing myself to tomorrow’s Suidlander leaders, I have shown that I have nothing against your organisation, Klippies, big hair, the Volk, the word kak or snug gene pools. I do, however, believe that a syllabus should be included in the white supremacist handbook on distinctions between cartoon characters like Shrek and Hulk. Or if they are green, do they all look the same to you?

Time for me to speak-up about animal cruelty I AM not a writer or a journalist. I'm not a humanitarian or an animal activist. I am just an everyday person. I'm writing this because so many times in my life, I've sat back and watched things happening in the world around me that I knew were wrong, but I did nothing. I'm writing this because I've watched injustices happen, but felt as though I was just one person and could not make a difference.

I'm writing this for all the times I ignored my feelings of guilt for not standing up when I knew I should have. I'm writing this because I want to show myself and everyone else that one person CAN make a difference. In the recent headlines there was an article published about lifeguards trying to drown a dog; more recently, there has been an incident where a man beat a dog to death.

What is this world coming to? We need to protect our animals, as they rely on us for love and care. I want to urge the community to take a stand. If we see an act of cruelty let us speak-up, and bring the perpetrator to book. We can all make the world a better place by righting the wrongs of our fellow citizens. Heart broken

It has been a weekend in which no insightful thoughts whatsoever entered my mind, and I have been left stymied. Then it occurred to me that this phenomenon is no way unique to me and my attempt to write this column. In every profession, there is a time and a place for winging it and hoping for the best. For an accountant, this might mean dissuading a client from suicide in the event of the loss of his life savings. In the field of science and medicine, winging it has led to the discovery of great things like penicillin. For administrators, winging it may simply mean finding the will-power to carry on and keep that smile on your dial when that hated client who stares down your shirt and sniffs continuously while waiting to see your boss walks in. For an appliance repairman, winging it may mean finding the perfect angle at which to smack a television set into submission.Perhapsthebestexampleofacareerwhichrelies on winging it is hostage negotiation. Having the skill to get into the mindand heart of that particular sociopath to dissuade him from detonating a bomb, shooting a victim or whatever other atrocity his twisted mind has cookedup, makes writing a column at 1am on a Monday morning look like child’s play. Then there are successful entrepreneurs who have built a career and a life out of winging it. Without the power of winging it, Steve Jobs would not have started the multi-million dollar Apple empire from his garage. Admittedly, on the other side of the coin, Julius Malema would not have started the Economic Freedom Fighters. When it comes to social lives, winging it forms a vital part of etiquette. One must be able to think on one’s feet and come up with valid reasons to not attend Auntie Muriel’s 80th birthday party at the drop of a hat. Potential suitors must be provided with plausible excuses for why you’re unable for a date, such as that you’re attending Auntie Muriel’s 80th. The advent of social media and text messaging has provided millennials with a valuable tool in the game of winging it. When you receive a message, you have that valuable two minutes before a reply is expected in order to think, to plan and to wing it. I have long wished that mankind was blessed with the ability to fly. In the absence of that, at least we can wing it.

RABELAIS 2009 Rabelais is a blend of Thelema’s best Bordeaux components selected from the 2009 vintage. The wine shows extraordinary concentrations of luscious dark berries, cherries and cedar wood on the nose. The fruit intensity follows through onto the palate with a lovely, long finish. This complex and fullbodied wine complements beef and game dishes.
