WARNING for domestic workers
>> Blue security urges residents to be cautious
Blue Security managing director Darryn le Grange.

B
LUE SECURITY is urging residents and domestic workers to be vigilant as they are increasingly being targeted by criminals. There have been several armed robberies in the Upper Highway area where domestic workers were targeted during broad daylight in the past few months. Blue Security managing director Darryn le Grange said that in two of the incidents, robbers had ‘won the confidence of the women’, who had opened the gates to let them in, believing they had arrived to read meters and drop off deliveries. “A white van arrived at a property in Forbes Drive in Gillitts and the three occupants managed to convince the domestic worker that they were meter readers. “As she unlocked the gate, they held her up and fled with a laptop, money box and microwave,” Le Grange said. In Coghill Avenue in Kloof, three armed men hooted at the gate of a property to attract the attention of the domestic worker, Le Grange said. “They advised the domestic worker that they had a delivery but then held her up and robbed her of her cellphone as she opened the gate,” Le Grange said. “The family dog pounced on the men and bit one of them, causing them to flee without gaining entry into the home.” In the third incident in Clement Stott Road in Botha’s Hill, Le Grange said a domestic worker was lucky to escape unharmed after armed robbers attacked her with a golf club when she opened the security gates to sweep the mats outside. “Fortunately the domesticworkerwasnotseriously injured and did not need medical attention. The robbers fled with a flat screen television,” he said. Hillcrest SAPS communications officer Lieutenant France Mkhize confirmed the incidents and urged residents to be cautious when letting people into
their property. He said residents should contact the policeorsecuritycompany if there is anyone loitering at their home. Le Grange urged residents to set the following “security rules” for the home and to regularly remind domestic workers what to do in the case of an emergency. • Never open the gate or door to anyone unless you have given a specific instruction about a repairman who is expected to arrive. • If you need the domestic worker to open up for a plumber or an electrician provide her with the name and a physical description of the repairman. • If you are expecting a delivery give her the name of the company that is delivering the goods and tell her to accept the goods through the gate if possible, rather than opening up. • Never give out personal information such as the times that you arrive home from work to people who call the house during the day. • Before opening the door to hang up washing or sweep verandahs, try and check through the windows to make sure there is no one outside waiting to pounce. • Show her how to read the water and electricity meters so there will be no need to let even the legitimate meter reader into the property. Alternatively, you can call the municipality once a month to give them your meter readings.

Tools of the trade number 3 - The otoscope ALL vets will have an otoscope, which is used to illuminate and examine the ear. Very inflamed canals can be painful to examine, and in many instances, sedation or even general anaesthesia is required. The vet will use the otoscope to evaluate the canal lining for pus, ulceration, nodules, foreign objects or parasites like ticks or ear mites.
He or she will also then check the eardrum or tympanum , which is normally visible and translucent, permitting evaluation of the chamber on the other side, or middle ear. The reason this is done is that any medication placed down the ear canal, even water or saline, can irritate the nerves in the middle ear enough that balance or hearing disturbances develop.
Some medications eg those containing gentamicin, an antibiotic, are renowned for causing temporary or even permanent ototoxicity – damage to the nerves of balance and hearing – and thus NO medication should be placed down the ear without an otoscopic examination. In sedated or anaesthetised animals, I go one step further and use video-otoscopy to record the proce-
dure, and display it on a large screen, allowing other staff to assist in procedures such as MYRINGOTOMY (sampling past the eardrum from the middle ear), biopsy or foreign body retrieval. Ordinary otoscopes are not amenable for “team efforts”. A good otoscope can costoverR8000hence your vet might charge forthisprocedure.
Highway Heroes awarded >> Ward councillor congratulates February’s civic responsibility recipients KALISHA NAICKER
T
HE February 2014 recipients of the Highway Hero Award are the volunteers at Rescuetech. The team received the award from Ward 10 councillor Rick Crouch earlier this week during a training session on top of a mountain "in the middle of nowhere". Rescuetech currently has about 10 volunteers who have various qualifications in rope rescue and paramedicine, with a collective experience in excess of 50-years in climbing. All volunteers have a genuine desire to assist those in need and maintain a high standard of service and professionalism. Rescuetech specialises in high
angle rope rescues and works in conjunction with the SAPS, the SAAF and other emergency services. They operate to the highest technical standards according to their own detailed SOP and conduct regular training practices. Due to the nature of their activities, the Unit requires specialist equipment designed and manufactured to the highest standards. A great deal of their operating cost goes toward the maintenance and resupply of this equipment. At present although they are receiving some sponsorship there is still a financial shortfall which members are supplying from their own pockets. “I recently witnessed a Rescuetech training session and was very impressed at the level of profes-

“In order to raise funds for the unit, Rescuetech offers its services as medical and rescue support at various sporting events in the province. This is a worthy organisation for donations and I urge those who
can afford it to do so. The equipment they use is very expensive and they need assistance in the form of donations to keep up with the latest rescue technology. These individuals do a great job and do not get enough credit for the dangerous work that they do. “They are deserving recipients of my Highway Hero award,” said councillor Crouch. Jon Sargood of Rescuetech thanked Crouch for the civic appreciation award. “This is a great honour for us especially as most of our members live in the Highway area and very much have the safety and care of local residents at heart.” If you have the necessary skills to join the team, or would like to donate, contact 082 553 8828 or email chairman@rescuetech.co.za.
Crash: investigations continue FROM PAGE 1 Slindile was taken to Hillcrest Private Hospital with head, neck and leg injuries. She said the bus driver had decided to take a shorter route to catch up with the other three buses. “I was sitting in the second row behind one of my teachers when this happened. The bus was moving at a high speed down
a steep incline and we were horrified. “I could see that the driver was panicking. There was commotion in the bus and some pupils were screaming. “The next thing I saw was a tree on the road side, which the bus missed. It missed a second tree and then a huge branch from a third tree hit the wind-screen of the bus.” Slindile said the last thing she remembered was being hit on the head be-
fore everything went blank. She said the bus was old and the teacher in their company had passed a remarkaboutitscondition. Herfather,Bruce, said the family will wait for their daughter’s recovery and then consult with the family lawyer. “Whoever is responsible for this must pay for the pain and trauma my child went through. I’m told that the bus was organised on the day of the trip. Was it inspected for roadworthiness? Was the driver fit to drive at that stage? These are the things that should
have been taken care of in advance,” said Bruce. The school’s principal, Musawenkosi Malinga, said there were 72 pupils in the bus accompanied by two staff members. “A teacher was admitted and discharged the same day while the rest of the pupils were treated and sent home. We have one pupil here at Hillcrest and the other two are at R.K. Khan Hospital.” A spokesperson for the bus company, Soobhugs Coaches, which is based in Pietermaritzburg, said: “We are investigating the cause of the accident and what transpired between the driver and the cli-

SANELE MAY’S CHARGES have been dropped from murder to culpable homicide
>> Mthoko Dlamini, whose two brothers, Sbonelo (30) and Simon (24), and a cousin, Bonginkosi Zungu (40), died in the crash, said he would like to see May face murder charges GABISILE NGCOBO

IELD’S Hill truck driver Sanele May’s lawyers said they had been vindicated after the state downgraded his charges from murder to culpable homicide last week. May’s case was heard at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court via video link from Westville prison. May was facing murder charges after his 18-wheeler truck ploughed into several vehicles, killing 24 people at the intersection of Field’s Hill and Richmond Road last year. Speaking outside the court, May’s lawyers, Professor Mdletshe and advocate Khaya Thango, told the media that they were advised by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions that May’s charges have been downgraded from murder to culpable homicide. It would probably only happen formally once the indictment was served. The case against May was ad-
journed to March 28 to allow for the indictment to be served and for police to investigate new information related to the bail application. Thango told journalists outside the court that they felt vindicated and there would now be less pressure on May. “We’vesaidthatitwasnotcorrect to charge Sanele with murder,” he added. University of KwaZulu-Natal professor of Constitutional Law, Karthy Govender, said the case of Jacob Humphries, the Western Cape taxi driver who crashed his taxi into a passing train at a level crossing at Blackheath near Cape Town, killing 10 school children in 2010, could have had an influence on the state’s sudden U-turn. Humphries was initially found guilty of murder, but the Supreme Court of Appeal converted the 10 murder charges against him to 10 charges of culpable homicide and he got a lighter sentence. Govender said the nature of the crime, interest to society and personal
circumstances are some of the factors that will be considered when May finally goes on trial. Govender said May had to explain what happened on the day of the incident and he said his conviction may also have implications for May’s employer, Sagekal Logistics. Mthoko Dlamini, whose two brothers, Sbonelo (30) and Simon (24), and a cousin, Bonginkosi Zungu (40), died in the crash, said he would like to see May face murder charges. “People died. I’m still shocked that he’s now apparently going to be charged with culpable homicide,” he said.. “The image of my brothers lying on the road that night still cuts deep,” he added. KwaZulu-Natal Transport spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said they were disappointed at the change in charges. “We will continue to monitor this case. At the end of the day, we want justice to be served,” Ncalane said.

the town messiah, colleagues in particular see him as the village idiot. My professional time in the company of The Poison Dwarf was thankfully limited, but it made me painfully aware that unless you are self-employed, you will have to answer to someone who may be an intellectual and ethical sphincter. And of course even if you are an entrepreneur, you may find yourself adopting the behaviour of a sphincter, which means you are the cretin in this scenario. In preparation for the piece you are reading, which was inspired by a letter from a reader, I sent out the column batsignal to a few friends and colleagues who rated the following traits as ones that would render you or me (or them) horrible bosses: The highest scoring quality of a HB is someone who is intellectually disenfranchised. If you are unable to lead a team because you aren’t quite sharp enough - yet think you are the lost offspring of Einstein - your colleagues will probably treat you like
that kid we all once knew in Special Class back in the pre politically correct 80s: Suspiciously, pitifully and with thinly veiled disdain. Second on the list of less than noble qualities for HBs is taking credit for work that isn’t theirs. This usually entails the HB puffing out their chest or, worse, feigning humility while explaining to their own boss how they are the sole driving force behind your success, the flow and ebb of the tides and the rising and setting of the sun. Next on the list is, to quote a colleague, “Someone who passes the buck when the sh*t hits the fan”. A statement as eloquent as this should need little explanation, but let me try anyway. If you have instructed a subordinate to do something and your instruction falls foul of policy, it is your fault, not the subordinates. Letting the staff member take the proverbial fall on your behalf shows a profound lack of character. Sexual harassment ranked highly on the rating system for HBs, ac-
cording to female respondents. If you are unable to keep your pecker in your pants, you exhibit a lack of self-control and self-respect. Keep your professional life tidy. If you can’t, resign before you are fired. Indecisiveness, favouritism, poor follow-through, badplanning, lackof support and a slow turnaround time in answering colleagues’ requests also made the list. Although you may dispute it if you are a horrible boss, you don’t pee Aramis. Your subordinate’s time is just as precious and limited as yours. The more astute reader may have noticed that money has not made it onto the list; which falls in line with much research done on the topic of fulfilled staff. While salary certainly is and should be an issue if you are paid poorly, most employees are looking for respect, appreciation, support and leadership. If you are unable to offer these things, you may be a horrible boss, or at least be in the running to become one. Or, worse, you may be subjecting yourself to the future rant of a columnist who once worked with you.
the Berg would be the perfect setting for a thriller in which a thirty-something columnist disappeared in the night, only to reappear as a maimed and disfigured corpse. I’m the first to admit that I’m not an intrepid outdoorsy type. Things about the outdoors which I despise include insects, strange noises in long grass, excessive heat and the potential lack of bathroom facilities cleaned to my satisfaction. I’ll even admit that Imissthecreature comforts of the middle class lifestyle - my Sealy mattress, big-screen TV and easy accessibility to a cell phone charger. The thought of erecting tents, inflating blow-up mattresses and coaxing my sleeping bag out of its trustyholder does not appeal, especially when there are comfortable chalets within walking distance of this dreaded campsite. One of my more pressing con-
cerns regarding this trip is the threat of hiking. While I am all for a gentle stroll aroundthecampsite, mylasttripwith this group of intrepid girls led to me being taken on a “quick stroll” which turned into a six-hour hike, complete with reassurances every few seconds that the waterfall which was “just around the next corner” was more beautiful, albeit in a different way, than Taylor Lautner himself. This hike was made terrifying by the sudden appearance of a puff adder in the grass next to me. Okay, so I didn’t actually see the adder, and if you press me for the truth, I will be forced to concede that
the rustling noise was later proved tobeatwigshiftinginthebreeze. That moment of terror, I maintain, was equal to that which would have been brought on by an actual snake. By the time I got back to my blowupmattressafterthissix-hourtorture session, the aches and hallucinations were so strong that I believed myself to be being nursed by Lautner himself, and the pain still wasn’t worth it. But nonetheless, in my ongoing quest to seize days and make the most of my life, I shall dust off my takkies, pull my sleeping bag, mosquito spray and high-powered torch out from the back of my cupboard and pray for the absence of snakes.
THINGS ABOUT THE OUTDOORS WHICH I DESPISE INCLUDE INSECTS, STRANGE NOISES IN LONG GRASS, EXCESSIVE HEAT AND THE POTENTIAL LACK OF BATHROOM FACILITIES CLEANED TO MY SATISFACTION

EDITORIAL COMMENT Oscar season and the cost of living IT’S Oscar season in South Africa - and this one does not come with all the glitz and glamour presented at the Academy Awards version. The Oscar Pistorius case, which has its own channel on DStv, is in your face, whether you like it or not. There is a blow by blow account on social media sites, the Carte Blanche channel is breaking the story down piece by piece on their 24-hour channel and every local news site is dominated by the case. South Africa’s ‘trial of the century’ has begun and no matter what the outcome, citizens are interested in some aspect of this story. However, before Oscar season began, Pravin Gordhan delivered the budget speech and didn’t surprise many with the results. The word of the day being in ‘increase’ - petrol (again), sin taxes (alcohol and smoking) and the weakening rand. Gordhan also said that government’s focus in 2014 is to eliminate wasteful spending and corruption. South Africans are feeling the pinch with the number of increases and many are looking for a silver lining. Judging by some of the comments on social media, some have decided to stop sitting around and complaining and are ready to make a mark come election time in May. How to look after your pet
P
ETS need lots of care, love, and affection from their owners, just like you did when you were little. Here are some helpful tips on caring for your pet. 1. Research the correct care for your animal. You can find information in books and online. Make sure to check that the information is recent and valid. 2. Plan out routines. Animals like routines, and you're more likely to regularly do mandatory things, such as walking your pet, feeding your pet, and giving it the care that it needs. 3. Exercise. Just like with humans, obese animals are more likely to have health issues and live shorter lives. Of course, the term, exercise means different things for different animals(for dogs it's daily walks, for hamsters it's exercise balls, for parrots it's time to come out of the cage, etc), but all animals need it. 4. Give your pet space to roam. Give your pet a spacious area and if possible, let them out every day or every other day to exercise. 5. Train your pet, whether it’s a dog, cat or rabbit.
Healthy pets are happy pets.

Riders scramble for MTB marathon ‘worlds’ qualification

Andrew Hill (TIB Insurance) secured his berth on the start line of the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships by virtue of his top twenty finish in the weekend's MTB Sabie Marathon.
FEVER REPORTER
W
ITH 12 of the 20 qualifying events now completed, mountain bikers are scrambling to secure their qualifications for the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships at The Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg on 29 June. This past weekend a significant number of international riders were on the start line for the MTN Sabie Classic in Mpumalanga for the first of two South African qualifiers on the UCI Marathon World Tour, the second being the MTN Clarens in May. ABSA Epic teammates Urs Huber of Switzerland and his German team Bulls partner Karl Platt dominated the 120km event, with local riders Kevin Evans (Fedgroup Itec), Andrew Hill (TIB Insurance) and Gert Heyns (Contego Giant) making up the top five. For Hill the Sabie result secured his place in the MTB Marathon World Championships,
and he can now plan the year so that he can peakat the ABSA Cape Epic and the Marathon Worlds at the end of June. “I am really keen to give Worlds a good go,” said Hill. “We will have to see how the Epic goes and then go into an easy phase ahead of the Worlds. It is a fine line between getting your exposure and getting your racing in. “It will be so tough with all the top European marathon riders here for the Worlds because they operate at a different level,” said Hill. “It has to be a national priority to take full advantage of the opportunity of having the World Champs in our own backyard,” added Hill. “It is a once-in-a-career opportunity for our top riders and we have to make it count. We need a good couple of guys in the top tens.” The UCI MTB Marathon World Championships takes place at the Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg on 29 June. Visit www.mtbworldchamps.co.za for more.
