>> Disabled rider finds therapy in a horse named Wanda KALISHA NAICKER

W

HEN Maudelene Frenzel gavebirthto the youngest of three sons 25 years ago, she knew something was “terribly wrong” as his head was “the size of a tennis ball and he weighed just over a kilogram”. Doctors predicted that Mark Frenzel might never walk, talk or pass the mental level of a three-month-old and chances of him surviving were slim to none.

However, Mark’s miracle and journey to stardom had justbegun. Bornwithcerebral palsy (permanent, non-progressive movement disorders that cause physical disability, mainly in the areas of body movement), Mark has defied all odds and has grown into one of the Upper Highway’s most successful disabled horse riders. Speaking to the Fever, Mark said his first memory of riding a horse was when he was three years old. “When I was around hors-

es I never felt afraid. I wanted to touch them, be with them and even roll around them.” Rolling around was his means of mobility as he did not have upper body strength. Mark soon began riding for therapeutic reasons and with the assistance of helpers on all sides he would be led around the arena. HE Durban Flying Squad confiscated hydroponic marijuana (dagga) to the street value of more than R1.2 million from a house on Cliffdale Road this month, but the case against the suspected dealer has had to be temporarily withdrawn. According to provincial police spokesperson captain Thulani Zwane, Flying Squad members were patrolling the area when they received information about drugs on the premises. “The squad raided the house and arrested a 24-year-old man.” Zwane said it is alleged that the man manufactured the drug on the premises and then sold it. Hillcrest police spokesperson lieutenant France Mkhize said the case had been temporarily withdrawn, after the accused claimed that the evidence had been tampered with. “The man pleaded not guilty and told the magistrate that he did not have any drugs and that the evidence was fabricated,” said Mkhize. The drugs have subsequently been sent to a forensics lab for analysis. If the results

confirm that the evidence collected was indeed marijuana, the case will continue. MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has praised members of the Flying Squad for the recovery. “This...will certainly go down as a major stride in our war against drugs and other illegal substances. We say congratulations to the police who executed this recovery for work well done. “The government has identified drugs as one of the key drivers of crime and criminality. We therefore urge communities to partner with the police to ensure that those pushing and dealing in drugs are removed from our communities,” said MEC Mchunu.

Mysterious organs 2 – The spleen THE spleen is a large, fleshy red organ in the left side of the abdomen, lying againstthestomach.Incats, thespleen is rarely affected by disease but in the dog, it is a common site for cancer – either arising from the spleen (usually a “haemangiosarcoma”or“bloodvessel tumour”) or having spread there from other sites. The spleen has several functions, but the main ones are removal of old

red blood cells from circulation; as an organ storing blood ready for release in need (exercise, shock); and as an organ of the immune system. In the latter case, the spleen is particularly important in the fight against “protozoan” organisms – malaria in people, biliary in dogs. This is why splenectomised dogs (those whose spleens have been removedsurgically)musthavetip-top, year-round tick control. A splenect-

omised dog infected with biliary can develop massive parasitaemia and die within 10 days. Thespleencanalsotwist–although this is rare, and usually associated with a twisted stomach (gastric dilation-volvulus) and can undergo strokes or “infarcts” – the latter are rarely of any clinical importance. We can evaluate the spleen by palpation, on X-ray, or, most commonly, by ultra-

sound. Ultrasound-guided or surgical biopsies of the spleen can be very enlightening in understanding the best course of action. For example, dogs with lymphoma cancer (aka lymphosarcoma) do WORSE when splenectomised, than when simply given chemo – so it’s important to know the nature of the beast! The spleen is not an essential organ, and can be removed without any effect on lifespan.

During this time, she performed on some of the country’s premier stages including Splashy Fen, White Mountain Music Festival, and the Barnyard Theatre. She also recorded and released her sixth album ‘Forgiving Wind’ which was hailed by Rolling Stone South Africa as an album full of “beauty and original charm.” Enlisting the help of talented Durban musicians to play the banjo, mandolin, dobro, bass and lead guitar, ‘Forgiving Wind’ became a worldwide hit. Lepak told the Fever that she started writing songs just after college while living in Minneapolis. “Between 2004 and 2009, I recorded five albums, and in the fall of 2009, I left Minneapolis with my husband for Durban, where we lived for two years,” she said. “In 2011, I recorded my sixth CD, ‘Forgiving Wind’. Lepak became a Seattle resident in 2012 and performed in the Northwest Folklife Festival in 2013. She tours frequently between her former homes and her new residence. She returns to South Africa with her accordion playing husband Kale. Richard Haslop will join the two with mandolin and dobro at UKZN’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on Tuesday 22 April. Lepak will share the bill with local singer-songwriter and guitar extraordinaire Rowan Stuart at Bluestockings on Friday 25 April. Banjo player Bryan Eaton will add his finger-picking at Emoyeni Country Lodge for a Sunday lunch concert on 27 April. Are you a Lepak fan? A taxi is no place for a bibliophile BEING a writer isn’t easy. At least that's what I’ve read. But some say it comes naturally and they cannot believe they get paid to do something they love so much. But they take the money anyway. I’ll let you know my own thoughts when I become a fully fledged writer. One thing I do know, however, is that any good writer has to be a bibliophile. That’s just a fancy (and politically correct) term for a bookworm. I am it, so I can safely say I’m well on my way to being the guy who sits on his veranda sipping cold coffee, in my multi-coloured gown, flip-flops, messy hair (my locks are nearing that) and jotting on my tablet (21st-century stuff) how people’s lives are playing out as I watch them pass by, reciting punchlines to myself for my next best-seller. For now, however, I have to deal with a matter that affects me almost every day. As a tutor, I commute quite a lot between eSikhawini Richards Bay and Empangeni. My expert familiarity with the rolling landscape has eliminated the need to look out the window. Like any self-respecting bibliophile I bring a book along and hope to cover a chapter or two of Walter Isaacson’s Einstein: His Life and Universe. Alas, my fellow commuters do not share my passion for a good biography and this is evident in the warystaresIsometimesget(inthisdayandagenogal). Just the other day I was travelling to tutor a student in Empangeni in the late afternoon. So I found an almost empty Quantum (a great coincidence if you happen to be reading Einstein) and took a seat as closeaspossibletotheleft-handsideofthetaxi, having calculated that the sun would be on the other side of the vehicle for most of the trip. As I was discovering Einstein’s extramarital relations with his cousin, the full taxi was finally Empangeni bound. As we sped down the picturesque N2 the hydrogen bomb that is our sun shed some of its rays through the sunroof (I only noticed its existence then). Needless to say, the brightness of my book compelled me to read it at an awkward angle. At last I succeeded in placing the page in the shadow of the book, alas, the page itself was then out of view. Still blinded by the book, and with a curious blue hue in my vision, I reluctantly returned my book to my backpack and looked up at the sunroof looming over our heads. And I asked myself the very constructive question: “Who the f*** puts a sunroof on a bloody taxi?” My question fell unanswered by a long trainofponderingandwasputontheshelfofcoldcases such as why seatbelts are locked away in taxis and why foreign owned shops are looted. On the very same day as I entered the taxi that would take me home, I received some weird stares when I scanned the taxi's roof before asking: “J1?” Again I sat in a carefully chosen seat but this would not be my day as the delinquent who chose to sit next to me had the whiff of a small brewery, and the people in the seat behind me didn’t hesitate to ask me to keep changing the air conditioning from the window (we call it i-weather in loxion slang). It is clear to me now that my bibliophiliac tendencies will forever be under house arrest which is problematic in this day and age of mobility and convenience. You can’t even read in the library these days, they play East Coast Radio in Richards Bay.

Let’s celebrate our freedom and vote

TWENTY years ago, on 27 April, many South Africans stood for long hours in queues waiting in anticipation to cast their vote - for the first time. Many still recall the joy they felt when they made their mark on South African history. In another 20 years time many won’t remember that feeling of victory when South Africa became a democracy. Freedom Day will be another public holiday on the calendar. There are some who believe that 2014, just like 1994, will bring about some major changes that may be regarded as historic. The good news is there seems to be excitement in the air as the 2014 elections draws closer. The Fever is proud to have interviewed a number of youngsters who are looking forward to making their mark

this year. It is clear that young people are aware of the power of their vote and now they are encouraging their peers to “vote and not complain”. “It doesn’t matter who you vote for, as long as you vote,” wrote one of our young readers. Looking at all the public holidays in the South African calendar, the one we should celebrate united as a nation, is Freedom Day. This may sound like a broken record, but freedom did not come easily, there was a hefty price to pay, so South Africans can stand united and participate in choosing their leaders. Hopefully this will not be an opportunity wasted. Listen to your family and friends who are encouraging you to make your mark. They know what they are talking about. Happy Freedom Day!

In 2003 May de Lencquesaing, then owner of the famous Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande (well known classified growth in Bordeaux), bought the estate because she identified the potential for quality wines. LADY MAY 2010 CABERNET SAUVIGNON Lady May is Glenelly’s glagship estate wine. Elegant and complex, the wine develops flavours of cassis, blackcurrant, dark cherry, touch of graphite and delicate spicy plum. Fresh and vibrant, the evolution of the wine introduces flavours specific to Glenelly’s terroir. Deeply coloured and perfectly balanced, the wine displays an exquisite structure with velvety tannins and a very good aging capability.

‘Hats and Heels’ fund-raising tea was hosted by the ‘Inspiring Women Network’ in support of the Nicholson family on Thursday last week. Through the Facebook page ‘Friends of Jess’, Jess Nicholson touched the lives of so many families around the world during her battle with brain cancer. Friends, family and strangers pulled together to organise and support the many initiatives held to raise money to cover the medical costs of her treatment. Sadly, Jess lost her battle on 22 March and leaves behind husband Simon and children Anna, aged two, and fiveyear-old Joel. All fundraising efforts have continued in memory of this inspiring woman and to assist with outstanding medical bills. The 80 ladies who Hayleigh Bott and attended the Donna Short from tea were Sunsavvy. beautifully dressed in the ‘Hats and Heels’ theme and spoilt with delicious pastries and bottomless cups of tea and coffee. Amazing prizes, raffle items and goodie bags were generously donated and a morning of friendship and laughter was enjoyed by all, with the Nicholson family in mind throughout. Anyone who wishes to contribute to the ‘Friends of Jess’ cause, should visit the Facebook page to find out about various initiatives. The Nicholson family thanked Lindsay Grobler of the ‘Inspiring Women Network’ in the Highway area for coordinating and hosting the event.

Crime scene savvy >> Ballistics expert talks to the Fever about the Oscar Pistorius trial SHANNON HOPKINS

ALLISTIC expert Cobus Steyl has been a busy man as he is part of the panel of experts in their fields commenting for Carte Blanche – and other platforms like Radio 702 and East Coast Radio - on the high-profile Oscar Pistorius murder trial. The Salt Rock resident has been intheindustryfor28yearsand thistrialisoneofhisbiggest roles. Pistorius is on trial for killing his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on

Valentine’s Day 2013. Steyl, however, is not formally working on the case, his colleague Wollie Wolmarans has taken it on. Steyl says he has participated in 12 or 13 live shows for channel 199 on the trial over the past eight or so weeks. “I help provide insight and opinion for the show on any ballistic and forensic evidence that has come up during the broadcasting of the trial.” Steyl, who has lived on the North Coast for about 16 years, started on his career path in 1984 when he joined the South African Police Force (SAPS) in Pretoria. He originally studied land surveying, but hit a roadblock when the state did not allow him to do his internship, but required him to go to the army for two years. When he finished his stint, the industry had moved on from manual to digital techniques, and as his army training helped to qualify him to join the police, he decided to take this path instead. AfterjoiningtheSAPS,heworked in the fingerprints department for six months and in 1985 became a member of the ballistic section of the forensic science laboratory. After three-years of training, he qualified as a forensic specialist in 1989. He left the SAPS in 1993 to become a private ballistic specialist, which he has done full-time ever since. Steyl works around the country, saying it is not unusual to be in three provinces in one week. “I love what I do — it is so interesting and each day is different. It is also really rewarding to be instrumental in catching criminals,” said Steyl. Beingoneoftwospecialists,Steyl said he works on some of the most prominent cases in the country. He is currently working on the Marikana mine shooting incident and has previously assisted in a number of other high profile cases. Steyl is able to offer additional analysis beyond what the police laboratories are capable of, as often police reports may be lacking information leaving large grey areas open for interpretation by the court. Types of blood spatters, firearms and how they were fired or used, bullet marks on vehicles and surrounds, tyre tracks and footprints at crime scenes and post mortems all can be used as evidence in court. When asked if doing post mortems is not disturbing, Steyl said he just keeps his mind on the job.

“A body is a silent witness of what happened. I don’t really get upset as I focus on the evidence given as I wanttoprovidethebestinformation possible,” said Steyl. He said his job as a specialist is all about ‘thinking out of the box’. He has developed his own ways of analysingscenes, forinstanceheuses a dental stone, Orallab 75, to take imprints of footprints and such. Speaking to Fever on the Pistorius trial, Steyl said a culpable homicide finding is a given, however at this stage it appears that intention is likely to be proven by the State prosecutor. He added that he knows chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel saying he excellent during cross examination. “He is drilling Oscar as he wants to reveal in court that he has a temper. When not travelling the country, Steyl enjoys being ‘incognito’at home. He and his wife Kelley, who also helps write his reports, have four children - one at university, two at Umhlali Preparatory and one at Ashton College.
