One dead in N3 collision >> An horrific Monday morning N3 Shongweni accident leaves one dead and two others seriously injured.

MAN died and two others were seriously injured in a rear-end accident along the N3 west bound lane just before the Shongweni off-ramp in Hillcrest, Monday morning.

Netcare 911 along with ER24 paramedics and other services arrived on scene to find the two wrecked vehicles in the fast lane, with pieces of the cars spread across the road.

911 said an Uno was broken down in the fast lane and another vehicle came hurtling down the road. It collided with the stationary uno, “ripping” it apart.

“When our Netcare paramedics arrived they found that one of the drivers had been ejected and died at the scene due to the severe injuries that he sustained,” said Botha.

Two other people were seriously injured and after paramedics stabilised them at the scene they were transported to a local hospital for the care that they required.

A 54 year old who didnotwanttobenamedsaidhehasvoted in all elections since 1994, and says voting has always been important for him. “If you don’t vote, you can’t complain,” he says.

His wife a 52-year-old who also did not want to be named says voting is the only wayforhertoraisehervoiceabouttheconcerns of the community.

“There are lot of problems in this country but we can’t give up, we must vote,” she says.

“So much so,” Ricky Smit told Fever, “that he will retain a share in the auction purchase!”

Those interested in bidding for Travilla - who will debut at the races in June, shortly after the event - are invited to book a seat at the fundraising breakfast, or can make a bid by telephone.

Bids can be made by a single individual or in syndicates.

Scrap dealers on the front line of KZN’s cable war >> Businesses and police join forces to crack down on cable theft ROWAN PHILP

SHWIN Ramsaraj knew a police headache was coming when a Transnet truck parked outside his scrap yard just outside Kloof earlier this month.

Ramsaraj is security head of one of KZN’s largest scrap empires, Reclam.

So many parastatal and municipal employees have been caught selling off South Africa’s infrastructure that official vehicles are banned from scrap metal dealers, without exception.

According to Ramsaraj, stolen copper is brought to at least one of Reclam’s scrap branches around KZN every day, which he says they hold for investigators to check.

But it’s still a shock, he says, when a parastatal official brazenly delivers the loot in an official vehicle.

“His two guys offloaded the copper from the Transnet vehicle and he drove away,” he says.

“The guys come into the yard with a story that they found this shiny bright [high-quality copper] under a bridge. I could tell immediately it was Transnet cable — we weighed it at about 80 kg. That’s R6 400 for him, if

we were dishonest.

“We can generally tell where the stolen stuff comes from: eThekwini electricity cable has these sort of chip marks on its edges; Telkom cables are thin, and you can tell by tearing it apart. The wires come out in pairs.”

Ramsaraj then called his security guards and simply locked the two men in his office, saying, “Until this stuff is cleared, you can’t leave here”.

“Then the guy offers me a bribe of R700 to let him go. So I said okay — and made sure he paid my guy right under our security camera, and made sure my guy was standing away from him so we could catch him dishing the money like this,” he says — gesturing in the motion of tossing bread to ducks.

“So we have got a docket opened into the Transnet employee, and also charged his guy with bribery too!”

Thewomaninchargeofprotecting eThekwini’s electrical infrastructure, and who asked not to be named over security fears, says, “Ashwin is onein-a-hundred — a scrap industry official who assists us.

“We need to get to a point where many or most dealers are as vigilant as he is.”

In Cape Town, Helmut van Dalen isthatone-in-a-hundredscrapdealer ally for local police.

But the Copperheads spring surprise visits at his Ponderosa Scrap dealership anyway, in raids they call “inspections”.

Outside Ponderosa, a dozen peoplearequeueduptosellbagsandtrolley loads of scrap.

One supermarket trolley has a large city manhole frame on top — clearly stolen.

The Copperheads ask who brought the trolley, but no one admits to being its owner, and no one points to the person who brought it.

On the wall, Van Dalen has posted a long list of purchase prices per kilogram: R48 for “shiny bright” (quality copper); R25 for “good” PC boards with palladium; R20 for brass; R2 for steel over 2 mm thick; and R1 for cans and other thin metal.

In the back, he has his Monday-toSunday inspection bins for copper and aluminium, but, for Van Dalen, copper appears to be mostly a headache.

“Last year, all scrap dealers who wantedtomoveforwardwiththenew laws attended a meeting — 16 or 17 ofus—withtheprovincialSAPS,Copperheads; law enforcement from MetroRail. I always work with the police — we are the new-age dealers.”

In May, a team of more than 40 people made up of The Unlimited’s employees and their families used the morning

to create a bright, appealing environment for the children at the Khulakahle Crèche in Hammarsdale.

In addition to painting colourful murals on the façade of the crèche, the team also planted a vegetable garden.

The children, however, were most excited about the donation of eight plastic motorbikes and the addition of a track

to their playground!

The morning not only left a lasting impact for the children at the crèche but also touched the lives of everyone who took part.

DESIREE ERASMUS I AM not an academic, but even with this benefit I have read enough to know that the future of literature is bleak. In fact, when pondering the prospects of the written word, I immediately want to gnaw through my ankle in an effort to bleed-out slowly.

Should this ever happen, I can only pray that some Samaritan-type will not throw one of the Hunger Games or Twilight novels my way as a source of comfort in my dying hours. I will use the paperback to beat myself into a coma after assaulting the Samaritan.

The Hunger Games and Twilight sagas are just two of many recent bestselling series that are regarded as literary manna when it comes to milking teen and 20-something angst and skyrocketing sales for publishing houses.

Let me see if I am able to summarise the intricate, unique plots for readers of this column: Twilight deals with forbidden love between a sparkly, centuries’ old male vampire and a 17-year-old human female and all of the emotional quandaries that would entail.

Hunger in the literary twilight daries that would entail.

It was tough, but I think that about captures all of the subtle nuances and complexities of each.

Both series have ‘taken the world by storm’ and have seen such success that they have been made into hit movies by that other beacon of hope when it comes to quality production – Hollywood.

For reasons known only to perpetual crack users, Twilight has been compared to the novels of Jane Austen. Perpetual tic users have rated the series as ‘one of the best reads ever’.

The Hunger Games has received even more favourable reviews, even though someone like horror-writer Stephen King has given the series a ‘B’ because it’s predictable and adults would be able to pick up on the writing flaws. Pot, kettle, black?

What Fyodor Dostoevsky would have thought of this is open for debate, although I am guessing poison intravenously administered over a decade or so would be his wish.

As for comparing the writing in Twilight to Austen; Jane Austen was an inimitable writer. Her skills were and are admired internationally by academics and plebs like yours truly.

May meltdown I AM suffering a severe post-holiday, post-election, post-Mazibuko apocalypse.

Theelections,with all their ranting politicians, misplaced DA votes and fanfare, are over. The lucky among us have now managed to remove that little black dot from our thumbs.

The spate of public holidays which we enjoy in and around April is over.

Lindiwe Mazibuko, youngest hotshot of the DA and a voice of reason among the rantings of Parliament, is off to further her education at Harvard.

What, South Africans, is there to live for?

Mazibuko was an inspiration to millennials all across the country who wish to break into the world of politics. Having been born only in 1980, she was proof that Struggle Credentials were not an essential accessory to a political career.

To make matters worse, I realised last weekend, when I heard the story of Terror Lekota taking a bite out of a hat, that I should have voted for Cope. Finally, we have a politician who keeps to his word, having declared that if his party lost “market share” in these elections, he would indeed eat a hat. My respect for him grew upon his refusal to allow an EFF beret to cross his lips.

Any sensible South African takes leave during April, when public holidays can be strung together with minimal leave days to create a blissful two week holiday. This means that our holidays are now well and truly over until December, giving us seven months and approximately five days of nothing but hard slog and ever-in-

Let us compare this to Twilight.

Consider this inspired quote from heroine Bella Swan, talking about the uber-pale, uber-intense, uber-limplettuce-leaf-personality of vampire Edward: “I wasn’t interesting. And he was. Interesting… and brilliant… and mysterious… and perfect… and beautiful…and possibly able to lift full-sized vans with one hand.”

As for the Hunger Games, so violent is it that parents have lobbied because they deem it age inappropriate for the young teen market. It has been compared to a graphic novel made for Hollywood, and no doubt the publisher had this in mind when agonising over how much carnage would increase sales.

Why Twilight and The Hunger Games have ‘swept the world’ is not much of a mystery, given their marketability and sales potential.

If, however, young bibliophiles are open to being challenged by literature that has more depth than a petridish, we should encourage them to read the classics. It may surprise many to find that lust, intrigue, passion, obsessive love, murder, war and tragedy can be written with conviction, beauty and what we generally find lacking in the bestsellers of today - insight.

It’s also that time of year when muscle-bound fitness fanatics fill our pavements day in and day out, jogging until sweat blinds them while doing their last-minute training for the Comrades Marathon.

I am forced to take my beret off to these intrepid folk. By the time the stragglers were just missing the cutoff time at the finish line and collapsing in tears, I’d be collapsing at a coffee shop on the outskirts of Maritzburg, having walked, hobbled and crawled approximately 10 kilometres. Overall, it seems like a good time for a change, to make up for the positive political change our country did not receive. I’ll either dye my hair pink, get another tattoo, or learn how to cook. eating...we hope.

About five months ago, we mourned the death of former president Nelson Mandela. Many parties, not just the ANC, quoted the leader and highlighted his love for this country during campaigning.

Mandela encouraged South Africans to share this love and work towards building a better nation. Does the ruling party have what it takes to fulfil promises and build a nation? Watch this space.

THE 2014 Royal Show opens its gates to the public on 23 May and promises to provide an informative and entertaining experience for all.

“The government needs to realise that without the people of this country, they would not be in power, so they need to keep us happy.”

Busana said he is excited about the win of the African National Congress as there will be change in his community.

“I believe that there will be drastic change after these elections and I am confident that the ruling party will live up to its promises.”

Canoeing legend is pleased with Milan WC sprint time

COWS to host race for cancer JOIN the ‘cow herd’ and support the Compendium and St Mary’s mountain bike race on Sunday, 25 May. Spend the day in the sun, cycling in beautiful surroundings of the Shongweni Polo Club. This is a family event with race distances to suit the young and old, fit and not-so-fit.

The local “cow herd” are “all hooves on deck” to assist the youngsters as they race around the 5km and 10km distances. The day promises to cater for the whole family.

The family route will encourage young cyclists to experience easy water crossings, negotiate single tracks in the sugar cane, all the while ably assisted by the “cows”, decked out in their signature cow suits - who can even help out with puncture repairs.

The herd will be present on the day playing the role of Marshalls and will be positioned on route, ensuring the safety and well-being of all entrants.

Offering four superb races (45km, 20km, 10km and 5km), there will be entertainment for both adults and children and a mini market.

CHOC(The Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa) will be receiving a portion of the funds raised from the 5km and 10km family races to support the little heroes fighting cancer.

PPER Highway’s canoe sprint sweetheart Bridgitte Hartley narrowly missed out on a hopeful top five position at the opening round of the 2014 ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup in Milan over the weekend.

But the London Olympics bronze medallist was still pleased with her opening performance in the women’s K1 500m A final on Saturday 3 May. Having had a disastrous start to the 2013 season when she contracted chicken pox, the Natal Canoe Club star also had a tricky start to the 2014 season although thankfully it didn’t involve sickness, just a patch of typically unpredictable European weather in the build-up to the opening event in Milan.

“My aim was a top five but my first two weeks in Europedidnotgoquiteasplannedwiththeweather being terrible!” Hartley said.

“Not having many training partners also made it quite difficult as I then wasn’t able to sharpen my speed in training as I’d hoped.

“The race was, however, very close, with less than two seconds separating second from sixth, so I guess I’m pretty happy!”

Having finished just 1.720 seconds behind the winner, LisaCarrington of NewZealand, itisevident that Hartley is right up with the best in the world in terms of her fitness and pre-season preparations.

“The international K1 woman's field is extremely strong at the moment and I like to think I have a good, strong base to work off.

“I wasn’t far off the medallists in this first race of the season so that is something that I am really happy about,” said a satisfied Hartley.

Being one of the only South African paddlers that is consistently on the sprint world cup circuit, it is often difficult for Hartley being away from home for such a long period of time and not

She said that having her boyfriend, four-time Dusi Canoe Marathon winner Andy Birkett, with her gave her a sense of comfort.

ORN to run…the fact that Grant Cummings feels this way is no surprise when considering that one of his earliest memories, at the age of only three-yearsold, is of him running short distances with his grandfather, a multiple provincial champion and record holder over the three and six mile distances.

Cummings began running, competitively, at the age of five, and has continued ever since.

Some 37 years later, he has represented KZN regularly at both South African and South African universities championships, and has personal best times of 30 minutes and 40 seconds for 10kms and 69:01 for the half-marathon (21.1kms) distance. He has also won a silver medal on the only occasion that he ran the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon in Cape Town.

“Running has always been an important part of my life,’’ says Cummings.

“It is not just because of the sense of achievement that comes with succeeding competitively, but also because of its obvious health benefits and the opportunity that it has given me to meet so many wonderful people from all walks of life along the way.”

After having taken a few years off from running because of increasing work and family commitments, it was his wife’s fundraising for charities and the fact that he had never run Comrades that made Cummings re-evaluate why he ran in the first place.

It resulted in him dusting off his running shoes and getting back out on the road to train not just for himself, but in order to raise awareness of and much needed funds for charity.

The focus now shifted from running competitively to running simply for the fun of it, and in order to benefit those far less fortunate than most of us.

Cummings’ first Comrades fund-raising campaign in 2009 saw him raise R60 000 for The Sunflower Fund and finish the race in a very respectable time of 7 hrs 31mins.

The “bug” had now firmly bitten and he was back in 2010 and 2011 to run silver medals in Comrades on both the “Up” and “Down” runs, respectively, and raise a further R120 000 for charity.

His personal Comrades goals having been achieved, Cummings shifted his focus for the 2012 Comrades to “enjoying the spirit” of what has become known as “the Ultimate Human Race”, and accompanying his wife on her maiden Comrades voyage.

An amazing memory was created and this was made that much more special by the R67 000 that was raised by Cummings for the Jes Foord Foundation and for the St Mary’s Foundation Trust during this campaign.

For the 2014 edition of the race, he says that he noticed people’s generosity when he ran for causes ranging from life threatening blood disorders to those affected by rape, despite the fact that these issues do not necessarily affect everyone. However, support for the aged, which ultimately affects all of us, is

often neglected.

“We all have parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents, who have contributed meaningfully to our lives and to society. “ The Issy Geshen Lamont Home for the aged, which is based in Lamontville, south of Durban, has been doing amazing work for the elderly for the past 54 years. Many of these people come from a background of abuse and neglect, and the Home gives them an opportunity to grow old gracefully and with dignity.

“Cuts in funding mean that they now have to rely on private contributions to survive, and I appeal to each and every person out there, to give generously to this fundraising campaign.” Those interested in making a donation towards this worthy cause could either sponsor Cummings for his Comrades run, per kilometre, 89kms in all, or donate a set amount.
